A unique machine for inducing bending fatigue in wire ropes was built at the U.S. Bureau of Mines' Pittsburgh Research Center. This machine can produce nine levels of degradation through repetitive cycling of long samples of wire ropes of the types used in the mining industry. This report provides an analysis of the results of the first wire rope to be fatigued on this machine. These results have indicated that as a wire rope accumulates bending cycles, its strength first decreases because of wear and then in-creases due to cold working of the wires. As the amount of cold working increases, more and more of the embrittled wires break and the strength of the rope decreases rapidly. In this test, application of several of the regulatory retirement criteria to various sections of the rope suggests that there may be some inconsistency among them.

COUNTRIES of the Near East, with the world's largest and insist prolific petroleum resources, produced nearly 277 percent of the world's estimated total output of crude& oil in 1964 and accounted for about 60 percent of world exports of this commodity. Although petroleum largely dominated the mineral industry of tine area, production of antimony, chromium, copper, mercury, boron, potash, and phosphate rock was of world significance. Production of crude oil in Near East countries reached a record high of 7,520,000 barrels per day in 1964, an increase of nearly 11 percent over that of 1963. Kuwait maintained its position as the leading producer, accounting for almost 28 percent of the area's output. Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Iraq followed with 22.5, 22.2, and 16.5 percent of total area output, respectively. Despite record production, the Near East, proved crude oil reserve remained in excess of 211 billion barrels, or more than two-thirds of the estimated world proved crude oil reserve.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has studied solvent extraction as a means of concentrating the mineral components in coal. Solubilities of a number of American coals were determined using abietic acid as a solvent. The effect of rank on solubility was investigated, and maximum solubility was found with coals of intermediate rank. Vitrinite is the most soluble petrographic component; fusinite, micrinitc, and exinite are nearly insoluble. Spore exines also have a low solubility. Abietic acid is a hydrogen donor and reduces pyrite to ferrous sulfide. Mild hydrogenation of high-molecular-weight fragments of the coal structure to those of lower molecular-weight probably contributes to the solvent action. Even where solubility of the coal substance exceeds 90 percent, contamination of the mineral matter with coal makes identification of the mineral components difficult. Further separation might be possible by the application of float and sink techniques to the residue. INTRODUCTION Work n the solvent extraction of coal is conducted to recover commercially useful products and to characterize coal;. and obtain information on their structure. Some coals, particularly those of low rank, contain waxes, resins, and humic acids which can be removed by solvent extraction and find varied industrial uses. In World War II, solvent extraction of coal was conducted on a commercial scale in Germany to obtain a low-ash feed material for hydrogenation and to produce electrodes carbon for the aluminum industry.4 5/

"SUMMARYThe J. D. Price property is in Crittenden County, Ky., about 5-1/2 miles west of Marion. The Levias-Crittenden Springs fault system traverses the property. Mines on 3 miles of the same fault system immediately northeast have produced about 250,000 tons of fluorspar ore. The Keystone property, adjacent on the northeast, has produced about 150,000 tons of ore. 3/About 1934, lessees, sank a shaft upon the Price property to a depth of 111.5 feet and crosscut from the bottom of the shaft to the principal fault. No ore was found. Later, in 1942-43, they explored the same fault by core-drilling, but this project also was unsuccessful in finding ore.The author visited the property in September 1944, and subsequently the Bureau further explored the property by core-drilling three holes. No ore was found.ACKNOWLEGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Some typical thiacyclopentanes and thiacyclohexanes were synthesized to provide reference compounds needed for the identification of sulfur compounds in crude oils. Two general methods of synthesis were employed: (1) cleavage of 2-alkyltetrahydropyrans with hydrogen bromide followed by the reaction of the resulting dibromoalkanes with sodium sulfide and (2) the catlyzed reaction of cyclic ethers or 1)4-or 1)5-alkanediols with hydrogen sulfide. Both methods produced mixtures of 2-alkylthiacyclopentanes and 2-alkylthiacyclohexanes with 2-alkyltetrahydropyran as the starting material. The structures of the reaction products were established by analysis for sulfur; desulfurization; gas-liquid chromatography (GLC); mass, infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra; and an alternate synthesis. The synthesis of the cyclic sulfides contributed substantially to the identification of 10 members of this class of sulfur compounds in crude oil.

Magnesia spinel (MgO.Al203) recovered from dusting slags in the system MgO.Al203-2Ca0.SiO2 is in the form of single crystals most of which will pass 35-mash. This investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the concentrates as a refractory raw material. Three specific types of refractory bricks were studied: (1) dense, (2) lightweight bubble, and (3) insulating. Test specimens ware fabricated 1 by dry pressing, fired to 1,675° C., and tested by procedures common to the industry. The concentrates produced a refractor, having satisfactory density and mechanical strength; however, spinal is sensitive to thermal shock and the possibility of producing a spall-resistant brick using aggregate of such small grain-size must be considered remote. Lightweight refractorias fabricated of spinel bubbles were the most promising of the types tested. They were 30 percent lighter in sight than the dense refractory, their mechanical strength was good, and definite superiority in thermal shock resistance was indicated.

The Bureau of Mines has constructed a miniature oxygen deficiency alarm system using an electrochemical cell as the sensor. Distinct audible signals are produced at either of two preselectable oxygen levels which can be varied from approximately 10 to 20.9 percent oxygen. The high or cautionary range produces a 500-cycle-per-second tone pulsed at about a 1-cycle-per-second rate, whereas the lower or more dangerous oxygen level produces a continuous 500-cycle-per-second tone.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation, and the U.S. Geological Survey did a geological appraisal of an east portion of the Bear-Marshall-Scapegoat-Swan (BMSS) RARE II area (No. A1485) to provide mineral resource information for land use planning. The Bureau of Mines' investigation consisted of a library and field search for all mineral properties and occurrences, and included a review of Teton County mining claim records. Those records showed two placer claims, the only mining-related activity known in the area. Six reconnaissance pan samples were taken in the vicinity of the two placer claims, the Lone Star and Spotted Horse, located on Hannan Gulch in 1900 and 1901. One sample contained a trace of gold, but there are no identified resources. However, the study area is in the Rocky Mountain Overthrust Belt, which is productive for oil and gas elsewhere. The entire study area is blanketed by oil and gas leases and is currently being explored.

[A survey of the literature relating to ignition temperatures of acetylene-air and acetylene-oxygen mixtures reveals rather wide disagreement in the reported results. In some instances the ignition temperatures of acetylene-air mixtures were reported to be lower then those of acetylene-oxygen mixtures, which is contrary to experience with other combustibles. To clear up some of the reported discrepancies, the authors have investigated the ignition temperatures of acetylene both in air and oxygen, and their results are presented in this report.]

PURPOSE This report provides an integrative review of 52 recently published research reports that examine the associations between long working hours and illnesses, injuries, health behaviors, and performance. The report is restricted to a description of the findings and methods and is not intended as an exhaustive discussion of all important issues related to long working hours. Findings and methods are summarized as reported by the original authors, and the study methods are not critically evaluated for quality. SUMMARY In 16 of 22 studies addressing general health effects, overtime was associated with poorer perceived general health, increased injury rates, more illnesses, or increased mortality. One meta-analysis of long work hours suggested a possible weak relationship with preterm birth. Overtime was associated with unhealthy weight gain in two studies, increased alcohol use in two of three studies, increased smoking in one of two studies, and poorer neuropsychological test performance in one study. Some reports did not support this trend, finding no relationship between long work hours and leisure-time physical activity (two of three studies) and no relationship with drug abuse (one study). A pattern of deteriorating performance on psycho physiological tests as well as injuries while working long hours was observed across study findings, particularly with very long shifts and when 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work a week. Four studies that focused on effects during extended shifts reported that the9thto 12th hours of work were associated with feelings of decreased alertness and increased fatigue, lower cognitive function, declines in vigilance on task measures, and increased injuries. Two studies examining physicians who worked very long shifts reported deterioration on various measures of cognitive performance. When 12-hour shifts combined with other work-related demands, a pattern of more adverse findings was detected across studies. Six studies examining 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work per week reported increases in health complaints, deterioration in performance, or slower pace of work. Two studies com-paring 8- and 12-hour schedules during day and night shifts reported that 12-hour night shifts were associated with more physical fatigue, smoking, or alcohol use. Two studies examining start times for 12-hour shifts reported that decrements in alertness or more health complaints were associated with early 6:00 a.m. start times. One study examining 12-hour shifts in hot work environments reported a slower pace of work as compared with shorter shifts. Another study examining high workloads during 12-hour shifts showed increased discomfort and deterioration in performance as compared with shorter shifts. More definitive statements about differences between 8-hour and 12-hour shifts are difficult because of the inconsistencies in the types of work schedules examined across studies. Work schedules differed by the time of day (i.e., day, evening, night), fixed versus rotating schedules, speed of rotation, direction of rotation, number of hours worked per week, number of consecutive days worked, number of rest days, and number of weekends off. All of these factors could have interacted with overtime and influenced study results. This report describes a method for determining the stress in rock based on a requirement for static equilibrium ; namely , that the total load on a sufficiently large area must remain constant even after a drift or stope is mined in the area . The method is based on mathematical relationships that are independent of the elastic properties of the rock and the stress distribution near the underground opening . In addition to determining the preexisting stress (before mining ) , the method described can be used to determine the change in stress due to mining .

For the proper control of gasoline treating plants there is need of a quick test for corrosion. In "sweetening" gasoline that is, in treating it to remove evil smelling mercaptans or to convert them to disulphides or sulphides the sodium plumbite ("doctor") method is generally used. This method involves agitation of the gasoline with "doctor solution's (sodium plumbite made by dissolving litharge in a solution of caustic soda) in the presence of free sulphur3. One of the common mistakes in the technique of this process is the addition of too much free sulphur, which will dissolve in the gasoline and cause it to be corrosive. In the operation of a continuous sweetening; or treating plant, a check on the corrosiveness of they product is imperative at all times. The copper-strip test commonly used in specifications take, so long to perform that the plant may fail to function properly for some time before the operator discovers it. The writer has investigated a rapid corrosion test method involving the use of metallic mercury, recently developed by Messrs. G. T. Granger, refinery superintendent, and A. B. Comstock, chief chemist, of the Barnsdall Refineries, Inc., Okmulgee, Okla. They have used this test successfully for several months in controlling the operation of their continuous treaters any have come to the conclusion that it has several advantages over the copper-strip test. Chief among these is the time caved, as the copper-strip test takes at least one-half hour, while the mercury test can be wade in about five minutes. It is very evident that this is an important item in controlling a continuous treater.

A study was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to develop a simple, reliable test for field detection of selenium in rocks and soils. Two methods are described for qualitative detection of selenium, dependent upon its form of occurrence and the presence of interfering constituents in the sample. Both methods involve fusion of the sample in a test tube to form elemental selenium that will volatilize and condense as a red deposit on the cooler upper portion of the test tube. The methods are sensitive to 10 parts per million, (p.p.m.) equivalent to 0.001 percent, and can be made semiquantitative by using suitable standard samples. INTRODUCTION Although selenium is widely distributed in the United States, the known deposits are either so small or so low grade that they cannot be processed economically for selenium alone-4/ At present, commercial production is a byproduct of the smelting and refining of base-metal ores, particularly copper.5/ About 0.75 pound of selenium is recovered per ton of electrolytic copper, and small amounts are recovered by special treatment of assorted smelter dusts and fume products. Since selenium is a strategic metal in short supply, new sources are being sought by both Government and private interests.

The Bureau of Mines applied automatic computational methods to analyze the degree of correlation between sound transmission and atmospheric conditions. Statistical analysis of data collected over a 5-month period indicated that the following weather variables, listed in order of decreasing importance) have a significant effect on the transmission of sound in the atmosphere: 1. Wind velocity and wind direction. Winds in the direction of travel of the sound wave increase the sound intensity and duration. 2. Barometric pressure. High pressures are related to low sound intensities and durations. 3. Atmospheric temperature. High temperatures are related to low sound intensities and durations. Inversion of the atmospheric temperature did not appear to affect sound transmission under the conditions of this study.

This publication presents a simplified graphic method for determining the explosibility of mine atmospheres under mine-fire conditions from mine- atmosphere composition data. Sometimes it is necessary to seal part of a mine during a fire to exclude air and thus extinguish the fire. Unfortunately, liberation of methane and formation of hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the sealed area may create an ex- plosive or flammable atmosphere if enough oxygen is present to support combustion. On the other hand, the oxygen concentration may be reduced through combustion processes and the concentration of inert gases (nitrogen and carbon dioxide) increased enough to render the atmosphere within the sealed area non-explosive. Before an area is unsealed, it is extremely important to know if the sealed atmosphere contains Flammable gases in proportions that might form explosive mixtures when air is introduced. If an explosive mixture forms and the fire is rekindled, a gas explosion will result. Various experimental methods may be used to determine the explosibility of a particular mine atmosphere; however, these methods usually are impracticable in the field.

The continued growth of steel production in the Western States is contingent upon the development of new iron ore sources. Recent development of economical techniques for concentrating and agglomerating taconites has focused attention on the low-grade magnetite deposits near Atlantic City, Wyo., as potentially important sources of iron ore for blast furnace smelting. Therefore, the Federal Bureau of Mines has made comparative evaluations of blast furnace burdens that incorporate pellets produced from Atlantic City concentrates. The Bureau also has evaluated the relative effect of Utah coke on blast furnace performance, using a high-quality Eastern coke as a basis for comparison. This work was done in the Bureau's experimental blast furnace at Bruceton, Pa. Tests determined the maximum wind rate that could be used while a continuous stock movement was maintained in the furnace. The furnace was operated at wind rates ranging from 800 to 1,400 std. c.f.m., them maximum limit of the blowers for the 1.75 in.-diameter tuyeres used. Using a normal Utah ore burden and Utah coke, the furnace went into a tight hanging condition with a wind rate above 950 std, c.f.m. Using the experimental pellet burden again with Utah coke, the wind rate could be increased to 1,000 std, c.f.m. and probably to 1,050 std. c.f.m, before tight hanging occurs. This represents an increase of 5 to 10 pct. in the wind rate. The experimental results indicate an accompanying increase of iron production, as much as 8 pct.

The most important single operation in mining is the ventilation of underground areas in a manner conducive to the health and safety of employees. Adequate volumes of pure air must be supplied at the working faces, along the haulageways, and wherever men work, so as to dilute and carry away the methane liberated from the coal and adjoining strata, noxious gases evolved by the use of explosives, and the carbon dioxide exhaled by men and formed by oxidation of carbonaceous material, as well as any other gases, and also dusts which may be found in mine workings. A sufficient quantity of air must also sweep abandoned or worked-out areas of the mine to prevent the accumulation of gases, where sealing methods are not utilized to isolate old workings. Air, in a quantity adequate to meet the needs of the particular mine to which it is applied, is necessary, and supplying it can be made very expensive through failure to observe good practices in its direction and apportionment." The Bureau of Mines combined preconcentrating techniques and mass spectrometry to develop a parts-per-billion general analysis of impurities in helium. The impurities are preconcentrated using a Bureau trace-impurity analyzer; 35-mm Hg pressure of helium is left in the concentration trap to sweep the impurities into the mass spectrometry and provide a 10-mm Hg sample pressure.
