A previous report of the Bureau of Mines dealt with the toxicity of dichlorodifluoromethane, a new refrigerant that has a remarkably low toxicity. Continued research by the Frigidaire Corporation and toxicological experiments performed in the Laboratory of Applied Physiology of the University of Cincinnati revealed another organic fluoride, dichlorotetrafluoroethane, whose toxicity also appeared to be of a very low order and whose physical and chemical properties make it suitable for refrigeration purposes. In addition to low toxicity, safety in its use is further enhanced by its physical properties, which permit the design of equipment that operates at comparatively low pressures and hence mitigates the dangers and problems of leakage. The investigation described in this report was performed by the Bureau of Mines at the request and with the cooperation of the Frigidaire Corporation.

Preliminary Bureau of Mines studies of mafic igneous rocks collected from the Rabbit Creek area, northwestern Alaska, indicated concentrations of platinum (412 to 1,406 ppb) and palladium (343 to 892 ppb) in five of eight samples analyzed. The samples represent boulders and cobbles of mafic/ultramafic rocks from this locality. They are not from outcrop. Petrologically, (on the hand specimen scale) the samples are crudely to well-layered and are troctolitic ± gabbroie in character, with primary igneous mafic minerals strongly altered. Small patches of interstitial sulfide minerals, including chalcopyrite, bornite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and covellite are associated with these altered zones and elsewhere through the specimens. Copper values ranged from 0.1 to 0.3 pct in samples analyzed semiquantitatively; nickel, cobalt, and chromium contents are low. Chemical, mine alogic, and petrographic relationships suggest that the rocks of similar character outcropping in northwestern Alaska could also be considered as prospective for- concentrations or platinum, palladium, and copper.

Flammability studies conducted to date on stratified methane - air and pentane - air mixtures in air indicate that location and extent of a flammable layer are affected by molecular diffusion , gas motion , and propagation of flame . In initially quiescent mixtures , the lower limit - of - flammability zone may be determined by assuming molecular diffusion alone governs mixing rate . The upper limit - of - flammability zone can be predicted in this manner only for stratified layers with small concentration gradients ( less than 0.2 volumepercent per inch ) ; where large concentration gradients are encountered ( for example , as much as 30 volume - percent per inch ) , the initial - mixture methane concentrations that yield flammable mixtures are larger than anticipated . Flames propagating through heterogeneous quiescent methane - air atmospheres in the direction of the concentration gradient exhibit flame speeds at any point that corresponds to the flame speed of the homogeneous gas mixture having the same gas composition as that of the point in the heterogeneous system . In flowing mixtures with large concentration gradients , the degree of mixing prior to ignition does not appear to affect the flame velocity and emitted radiation appreciably in a 6.5 - ft - diameter gallery .

REAM is a unique method of rock breaking using high energy projectile impact. This report-describes the most recent in a series of tests demonstrating mining applications for the REAM method. In an underground limestone mine at Greer, West Virginia, REAM was used to drive a short tunnel and drill a large diameter borehole. Along with breakage data from these tests the goal of the program was to examine environmental problems which might result from the use of cannons under-ground. A total of 103 shots was used to advance a 14-l/2-feet high by 10-feet-wide face a distance of 5-1/2 feet. It is estimated that the 9.3-pound-concrete projectiles launched at 5000 feet per second will break an average of 0.78 tons of limestone or 67 percent of the 1.125 tons of granodiorite broken in previous tests. The 9-inch-diameter borehole was drilled horizontally by repeated axial impact for 7 feet, 2-1/2 inches by 21 shots giving an average of 4.12 inches per shot. Scaling this result to compressible impact energy yields an estimated 5.8 inches per shot for a 12.8-inch-diameter hole compared to 8 inches per ~hot for a 16-inch-diameter hole in granodiorite. Noise measurements indicate that a silenced cannon can be used within a few hundred feet of mine personnel in a room and pillar mine within the legal limit of 140 dB impulse without additional protection. Some fume measurements were made with satisfactory results, even though the military propellants used produce much greater quantities of toxic fumes than the liquid propellant proposed for the future.

Although alternating-current (a.-c.) power systems and equipment have been used in coal mining for many years, most mines in the United States are powered mainly by direct current (d.-c.). There are several logical reasons for this, but the use of d.-c, equipment is, in most instances, a direct outgrowth of the original practice of using such power for haulage systems. For traction equipment such as the electric trolley locomotive the d.-c. motor has ideal operating characteristics, and thus it has been widely used for haulage locomotive service. The first efforts at electrification of coal mines started with the haulage system and from there branched out to include the many types of electrically powered mining machinery used in the industry today.

This experiment investigated the effects of different machine mounted area lighting technologies on visual performance. The primary objective was to conduct a comparative evaluation of the lighting technologies based on the visual performance of thirty-six human subjects in a simulated underground mine environment. Incandescent (Incand), fluorescent (Fluor), and light-emitting diode (LED) technologies were used to create four lighting combinations. Visual performance was quantified for the detection of movement in the peripheral field of view and the identification of ground hazards. Measurements were made of the speed [response time measured in milliseconds (ms)], the accuracy (the number of targets and objects missed), and the subjective discomfort rating of the glare experienced for each lighting combination. A secondary objective explored the effects of aging on visual performance. The results indicate that lighting combinations which consisted of LED area lights significantly improved visual performance for the detection of hazards found in the peripheral field of view, as well as those found on the ground. They furthermore, indicate that age plays a significant role in visual performance.

Laboratory equipment, which simulates abrasive impacts between steel and minerals that might be present during pneumatic transport of coal, was used by the Bureau of Mines to characterize the potential explosion hazard of such collisions in an atmosphere of fine coal dust, air, and methane. A variety of coal mine rock materials, including sandstone, limestone, and pyrite-bearing limestone, were impacted with specimens of pipeline steel. Tests were con-ducted in atmospheres containing zero to 6.4 vol-pct methane mixed with zero to 300 mg/l coal dust. Coal dust in air alone was not ignited by abrasive impacts, but additions of as little as 1 vol-pct methane to the coal dust and air mixture resulted in ignitions. Steel impacting against sandstone caused ignitions in mixtures of coal dust, air, and methane, and the probability for ignitions increased with an increase in methane. No ignitions occurred with impacts of steel on lime-stone or pyrite-bearing limestone, even when large showers of sparks were produced. Studies of the effect of tangential collision velocity showed that no ignitions of coal dust, air, and methane occurred below 900 fpm (4.57 m/sec). Ignitions in coal-air-methane mixtures were found to be caused by a hot friction-induced smear on the impacted rock at the impact site rather than by sparks. High-speed photography was used to verify this observation.

"This paper outlines the results obtained when sampling twenty underground coal mine sections, each in a different mine. The sampling effort was oriented toward a detailed characterization of coal mine dusts and thus eight-stage Anderson Model 298 impactors were used as the primary collection instrument. This instrument allowed a rather detailed size distribution for each of the particulates sampled. Because four of the mines used diesel outby equipment and/or diesel shuttle cars at the face, it is possible to make some comparisons on the particulate distributions in diesel versus non-diesel mines.One of the more interesting results is the pattern that exists in mines that contain only diesels used for outby utility haulage. Particulate in these mines seem to be consistently heavy in the fine size ranges, perhaps being of significant concern to the industry. While no definite conclusions can be achieved from the limited data collected in this study, the data indicates that more detaile~ study of particulates in diesel mines is needed so that some idea of the particulate loadings in diesel mines can be achieved."

The precious stones rubies and sapphires are transparent varieties of the mineral corundum . Essentially they are aluminum oxide , but the aluminum is often replaced. by small amounts of chromium , titanium , or iron . The chromium is said to give a red color , titanium a blue , and iron a yellow . True rubies range from rose to a somewhat purplish red and are sometimes termed " oriental rubies " to distinguish them from spinel rubies , stones of inferior hardness , density , and value . " Oriental rubies " are very rare , and the so-called " pigeon's blood" variety is the most valuable . Sapphires normally range in color from palest blue to deepest indigo , but actually all precious varieties of corundum of any other color than red are called sapphires . The most esteemed tint is like that of the blue cornflower . Colorless corundum of gem quality is called white sapphire ; the yellow variety is described either as yellow or as golden sapphire ; and the pale pink is classed as pink sapphire . The word " oriental " is also used as a prefix in naming varieties of corumdum of less popular colors . For instance , oriental emerald is used for green corundum, oriental topaz for yellow , and oriental amethyst for violet to purple varieties . The chief physical characteristics of rubies and sapphires are hardness , adamantine luster , and moderately high specific gravity ( 3.9 to 4.1) . Next to the diamond, corundum is the hardest of all minerals ; in fact , the sapphire is number 9 on Moh's scale , ranking between the topaz and the diamond. Rubies crystallize in 6-sided prisms terminated by flat faces and other varieties of corundum with twelve inclined faces , six above and six below , meeting in a girdle . Corundum is doubly refractive , with a direction of single refraction running parallel to the edge of the prism . The refractive indexes are very constant, the ordinary index ranging from 1.766 to 1.774 and the extraordinary index from 1.757 to 1.765. The double refraction always remains the same.

The ignition problem: for a layer of firedamp bordering on a cloud of detonation products is evidently considerably more complicated than in the usual laboratory ignition experiments, in which a well-defined volume of gas is heated and the occurrence of ignition is observed after an induction period. An atmosphere of firedamp exposed to the detonation of a high explosive is subjected to heating by shock-wave compression and thermal conduction and to intermixing at the interface of the firedamp atmosphere and the cloud of deto¬nation products. Although a reliable physical-chemical analysis of the problem is not yet possible, one may nevertheless form a general view of the role of compression waves and the processes of heat transfer and diffusion at the interface. Near the mouth of a shot hole, or near a freely suspended cartridge, the firedamp atmosphere attains very high temperatures by adiabatic compression, and it is certain that such temperatures are sufficient to initiate chemical reaction. The pressure wave pattern is reproducible from one test charge to another if the initial experimental conditions are held constant; on the other hand, experiments on firedamp ignition do not yield a reproducible threshold condition for ignition, but only an ignition probability. Thus, the induction periods are sufficiently long that there is time for the compressed', heated gas layers to undergo random changes that may quench or promote ignition. Therefore, the analysis of the ignition problem hinges primarily on the discovery of the random events that modify the chemical reaction in the activated gas layers.

This paper, describing the mining methods and colt at the New Indria quicksilver mine, is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on various mines in the United States. The New Idria mine lies at an elevation of 3,500 to 4,200 feet in the Coast Range of San Benito County, Calif. The property is accessible by automobile stages from Gilroy or Hollister via Tres Pinos. Tres Pinos, 65 miles northwest of the mine, is the nearest railroad point.

A triaxial procedure is described for measuring the modulus of elasticity and Possion's ratio of stress relief cores , that is , the concentric hole cores obtained by the overcoring technique . The elastic constant determinations can be made at stress levels comparable with those encountered in underground mining . The results from tests on an aluminum alloy calibration specimen and four rock specimens are included .

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of small amounts of cobalt in nickel on the tensile properties and hardness of representative types of austenitic stainless steels . Cobalt substitutions for nickel up to 2 weight - percent were made in types 302 and 309 stainless steels . Data were obtained at room temperature for tensile strength , yield strength , percentage elongation , percentage reduction in area , and hardness . In type 302 steels , tensile strength and hardness increased with increased percentages of cobalt , percentage elongation and reduction in area decreased , and yield strength showed little change . Property changes were largely due to the reduction of nickel content rather than to the addition of cobalt . In type 309 steels , only minor variations were observed for the properties investigated ; the effects of the relatively snall cobalt substitutions and nickel reductions were somewhat reduced by the higher total alloy content .

This report presents the results of a cooperative study between the Bureau of Mines and the University of Utah to define the mechanism involved in the adsorption of oleic acid and sodium oleate on fluorite, calcite, and barite, using an infrared spectrophotometer for identifying and measuring the adsorbed reagents and reaction products. Fluorite, calcite, and barite react with oleic acid and sodium oleate in a water system, forming chemisorbed and solution products. The chemisorbed species is a surface mineral cation-collector anion salt, Chemical analysis of solution resulting from the adsorption reaction indicates that the adsorption process causes displacement of mineral anions, namely, fluoride, carbon ate, and sulfate from the surface of these minerals.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTThe safety and efficacy of permissible storage—battery gathering locomotives are becoming recognized more and more in coal mines. The great mobility of this type of haulage equipment is due to the fact that no trolley wire and bonding of rails are needed; hence wherever there is track and adequate ventilation to dilute properly any dangerous gases, the storage—battery gathering locomotive may go. As coal near the outcrop or the surface is mined out, coal farther from the outcrop or deeper in the ground must be mined, and gassiness of the coal bed often increases under these conditions. The use of electrical equip¬ment capable of giving off arcs or sparks while operating near or at the coal faces constitutes a serious explosion hazard. Often, it is uneconomical or impracticable to use animal haulage, and locomotives must be employed. The operator should consider the safest and most economical unit; permissible equipment is the answer to this problem, and storage—battery locomotives are the only permissible electric haulage units.A comparison of permissible storage—battery locomotives with cable—reel locomotives of the latest enclosed ""explosion—tested"" type has been made at the Keystone No. 1 mine of the Houston Collieries Co., at Keys one, W. Va. The information and data contained in this publication were obtained by the writer during an inspection of haulage at this mine.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe writer is indebted to P. C. The feasibility of removing sulfur dioxide by carbon monoxide reduction in a fixed-bed catalytic reactor was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. The reduction rate of sulfur dioxide with carbon monoxide was significantly dependent upon the iron and alumina content of the mixed catalyst. Maximum catalytic activity was obtained with about 40 percent iron-alumina mixture with a nominal gas mixture of 10 percent carbon monoxide, 5 percent sulfur dioxide, and the balance nitrogen. The synergistic effect of this catalyst mixture was explained by a dual reaction site mechanism, with both iron and alumina augmenting their specific sites at their interparticle contacts. The catalytic activity also increased with decreasing catalyst pellet size. With O.7-mm pellets, the entire pellet appeared to be catalytically active in a 2-gram catalyst bed. The apparent activation energy of the reaction was 18.3 kcal per mole in the temperature range of 350° to 600° C. Carbonyl sulfide (COS) was produced by the interaction of carbon monoxide and sulfur. The amount decreased with decreasing CO concentration. The ratio of COS formed per SO2 removed reached a maximum at about 400° C. The reaction rate appeared to be independent of S02 concentration in the range of 0.2 to 16 percent. The rate, however, increased directly with the CO concentration in the range of 5 to 20 percent. The presence of CO2 (<15 percent) had no appreciable effect on the rate. However, not over 0.5 percent oxygen could be tolerated. This method appears feasible for removing S02 from waste gas if the oxygen is removed prior to the catalytic S02 reduction process.

Cardox blasting is used widely in coal mines in the United States . A model of a Cardox blasting device was approved by the Bureau of Mines subject to certain conditions and limitations , and the approval was extended to other models from time to time . Certain special hazards are entailed in the use of Cardox as with explosives . One of these is flying shells . In some blasts , the Cardox shell is violently ejected from the borehole and flies like a projectile , frequently ricocheting off solid objects and striking points considerably off the line of its initial flight . Flying shells have been known to pierce the webs of structural - steel beams , to pass through both sides of allsteel mine cars , to be driven through stout hardwood timbers , to knock out timber sets , to damage loading equipment , and to break or short - circuit power lines . A considerable number of shot - firers and other workers have been struck by flying shells and killed or injured . Accidents from this cause , although not as frequent as other types of mine accidents , are usually serious , closely approximating accidents caused by blasting with ordinary explosives . The increasing number of such accidents prompted a Bureau of Mines field investigation of possible methods of preventing dangerously violent ejections of Cardox devices . This report contains pertinent data collected during the investigation and describes methods tested and discarded as well as the development and proof of an apparently satisfactory method .

The consumption of gasoline in the United States varies materially with the seasons; during some of the summer months it exceeds the rate of production and in the other seasons the production of gasoline exceeds the consumption, The usual practice of the larger refiners is to store surplus stocks during the winter season in order to meet the heavy demands during the summer months. This investigation was made to develop a method of preparing high - purity thorium metal in quantities up to 20 kilograms per batch . Several methods for the preparation , purification , and reduction of thorium tetrachloride are discussed . Thorium tetrachloride was prepared by chlorination of decomposed thorium nitrate or oxalate with carbon tetrachloride or phosgene . tion of the crude tetrachloride was achieved by multiple distillations or by filtration of the molten chloride . It was found that high - purity thorium metal could be prepared by sodium reduction of thorium tetrachloride if chloride of sufficient purity were available . Byproduct salts and excess reductant were removed by vacuum distillation , and the resultant thorium metal sponge was consolidated by consumable - electrode or fixed - electrode arc melting . It was demonstrated that metal prepared by this method could be fabricated into bar , rod , or sheet , at room temperature .
