[The legislation in many States against the present method of producing carbon-black by the incomplete combustion of natural gas, and the continually increasing demand for gas for otter purposes, indicates that the supply of carbon-black may Gradually be decreased and that new methods for its production, utilizing a greater parentage of the carbon in the has should be developed. In the course of investigations of the effects on hydrocarbons of high voltage discharges, it was noted that under certain conditions natural gas could be decomposed and that carbon-black could be produced. The effects of several tyres of electrical discharges on natural gas have, accordingly, been studied' in order to find out the fundamental factors underlying the reactions and their possible influence in the recovery of a greater part of the carbon content of natural gas than is now possible. Present commercial plants using natural gas for the manufacture of carbon-black recover from 0.9 to 1.5 pounds of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gala consumed, or less than 5 per cent of the total Gabon in the gas: It should be noted, however, that the, present methods involve heating the gas to incandescense by burning it as a luminous flame, and a considerable part of the gas is thus consumed as a source of hest. If this heat can be supplied from some other source, or if a more efficient method of applying the energy con. tamed in part of the gas, to the decomposition of the rest of it, can be worked out, then a greater yield of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gas care be expected. "The third annual safety contest for plants producing sand and gravel, which was conducted in 1911 by the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the National Sand and Gravel Association, registered further progress in safety as compared with the two previous annual contests. Both the accident-frequency rate and the accident-severity rate were reduced.The period covered was the calendar year 1931; sixty plants participated, and 17 States were represented by the participating companies.The contest covered accidents and man-hours worked by all men at the participating plant who were employed by the same company; and it included work up to the point of delivery of the material directly to the consumer or to an independent agency of transportation--in other words, to the point of relinquishment of control of the material by the producer.The purpose of the yearly contests for producers of sand and gravel is to aid in the promotion of safety among the employees and in the reduction of accident costs to the companies. The contests develop friendly rivalry among the various plants and among the employees of individual plant in a concerted effort to prevent accidents.Two safety trophies are awarded annually, both of which are provided by Rock Products magazine. One of the trophies is for the host safety record among plants that were in operation the contest year 100,000 or more man-hours; the other trophy is for the best among plants that were in operation lees than 100,000 man-hours. Awards and the relative standing of the various plants are based upon statistical compilation by the Bureau of Mines of accident reports and employment reports furnished by the enrolled companies. are summarized at the close of each year, and the summaries are submitted to each company concerned for certification as to the accuracy of the summary and the completeness of the company's reports from which the summary was prepared. When the summery is returned signed by an official of the company, the records are considered to be a trustworthy basis for determining the relative standing of the various plants. The position of each plant is determined by its accident-severity rate; that is, the number of days of disability resulting from accidents for each 1,000 men-hours of work done by all employees at the plant."

"These proceedings consist of papers presented at a Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminar on postdisaster survival and rescue research. Several seminars are held each year to bring the latest results of Bureau research to the attention of the mining industry as quickly as possible.INTRODUCTIONThe postdisaster research program is directed toward research and development of technology and equipment that increases the chances of a miner surviving or being rescued after an underground mine disaster. A disaster is an accident of major proportions, and it may result in the entrapment of miners whose normal egress from the mine is cut off. This often necessitates a rescue operation and a means of keeping the trapped miners alive while they await rescue. The Bureau is currently pursuing research to develop the technology that will enhance the ability of miners to survive such an occurrence. The research is divided into two basic problem areas, survival and rescue. Both areas are concerned with the inability of miners and rescue teams to cope with the postaisaster environment, such as toxic gases, unstable roof conditions, water flooding, and lack of oxygen. In addition, research is also conducted to find ways of locating and quickly reaching trapped miners. Most of the research conducted by the Bureau has been directed toward the postdisaster problems associated with coal mines. However, most of the research results are also applicable to noncoal mines as well.The papers presented in these proceedings address some of the recent research conducted by the Bureau of Mines that has been directed toward the postdisaster problems outlined above. The topics covered range from an overview of the technology developed for oxygen selfrescuers to training programs for mine rescue. Any questions or comments pertaining to this research are encouraged and appreciated. The in-situ stress field was determined, using the overcoring technique, at two underground sites at the Pea Ridge Mine, Sullivan, Missouri. At one of the sites in magnetite, the three dimensional stress field showed the largest principal stress to be compressive (-4564 psi), nearly horizontal and closely parallel to the strike of the orebody. The smallest principal stress was also compressive (-2047 psi) and nearly vertical. Considerable difficulty was experienced in drilling porphyry rock at the second test site in the host rock. Only one hole was drilled at this site. The secondary principal stresses obtained in the porphyry are -9464 and -4945 psi, respectively. The-test site in magnetite is located at a depth of 2505 feet whereas the site in porphyry rock is at 2475 feet. The vertical stresses: due to overburden loading at these sites are -3590 and -2782 psi, respectively. Field determined values of the vertical stress are -2207 and -5098 psi, respectively. The variance; between the two sets of values is most likely attributable to the orebody formation and the differences in the modulii of the host rock and the orebody.

The effect of a water-repellent film in sandstone cores on the effective permeability-saturation relationship was investigated as part of a cooperative research program between the Bureau of Mines and the American Gas Association. The repellent film was formed by the reaction of methyltrichlorosilane3 with the connate water in the core. Other researchers have reported on the use of silicone chemicals to alter the flow characteristics of porous media (1-3, 5-7, 9, 10).4 The previous studies, however, dealt almost entirely with oil-water or oil-gas systems and not with water-gas systems. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of using silane to retard the influx of water into natural-gas storage wells and to determine the necessary requirements for achieving this result. The success or failure of silane treatment as a remedial measure depends on its effect on gas-production rate and attendant water production.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory-scale beneficiation tests on a sample of corundum gneiss from Montana to devise a method for beneficiating corundum for use as a substitute for refractory-grade bauxite. A flotation process utilizing petroleum sulfonate as the collector in an acid circuit was devised. Results showed that two flotation schemes each produced a concentrate exceeding the national stockpile specifications for calcined bauxite. From a feed containing 28 pct corundum concentrates containing up to 92.5 pct alumina (A1203) were produced with a corundum recovery of 78.5 pct.

A comprehensive review of published research was carried out to identify methods for teaching and assessing critical but nonroutine skills needed for coping with emergency situations. Computerized searches of the relevant data bases were carried out, along with identification of relevant articles and materials by personal contact with experts in many fields. The citations listed in this bibliography resulted from this systematic literature search and review. The computer searches and an analysis of this literature are described in technical report 1. Specific methods for assessing critical skills proficiency in aviation, medicine, organization management, the military, and other industrial/ technical workplaces were described. The potential application of these methods for teaching and assessing (1) critical first aid and (2) self-rescue and escape skills to underground coal miners in annual refresher training was explored. Research and development activities that may improve mine health and safety training were suggested. Most of the entries in this bibliography were assembled in 1984 through 1985. Study of these materials contributed to the completion of the project research that followed. This later work is reported in the project technical report 2 and the final report. This bibliography is most useful when combined with examination of technical reports 1 and 2 and the final project report.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report conveys the results of an economic analysis of minerals in the West Mojave Management Area (WMMA), including the Desert Tortoise Priority Habitat (DTPH), a proposed special land management area. Undiscovered mineral resources were estimated for the entire WMMA, which totals 8.7 million acres. Known mineral resources were studied for the DTPH, which is an area of 1.2 million acres contained within the WMMA. Federal lands within the WMMA are managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The WMMA includes Federal, State, and private lands in the western portion of San Bernardino County and the eastern portion of Kern County. The center of the study area is 20 miles northwest of Barstow, California (Figures 1 and 2).

In 1985 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 9,400 acres of the 10,005-acre Duncan Creek Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-78) in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The study area is located in Owyhee County, 10, about 36 miles southwest from Bruneau, ID. No mining districts are in the study area, nor were any mines or claims recorded or found. The southern half of the area was covered by oil and gas lease applications, all of which were cancelled prior to June, 1985. No economic concentrations of minerals were found in the study area. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of the Duncan Creek study area at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the study area for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

This paper describing the concentrator practice of the Copper Queen Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation at Bisbee, Ariz., is one of a series of papers on milling methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Copper Queen Concentrator treats 4,000 tons of copper ore daily by preferential flotation, whereby the copper sulphides are floated and considerable iron pyrite is depressed. During 1929 the heads to the concentrator averaged 2.15 per pent of copper, the recovery was 91.32 per cent of the total copper, and the concentrates produced contained 12.92 per cent of copper.

Investigations conducted by the Bureau of Dines pertaining to the reduction of evaporation losses of petroleum have shown that such losses may be reduced 70 to 80 per cent by the use of vapor-tight tanks equipped with vacuum and pressure relief valves, and vapor-tight thief hitches. Additional studies have shown that it is often economical to supplement this type of construction with other measures that will reduce evaporation losses still further. Water-cooling systems, insulation, and light colored paints are the measures most often used in connection with vapor-tight tanks. Painting with light colored paints probably is employed in the greater number of cases. On account of the cost of insulation, or of installing water cooling systems, the use of these methods are restricted to tanks containing gasoline or crude petroleum with a very large content of low-boiling fractions. The effect of cooling systems has been discussed in a previous report.2 In choosing paints for tanks many factors must be considered. Probably the three most important are cost, protective value, and color. Many companies have adopted a standard color for all of their tanks in this way they reduce the initial cost of paint by buying in large quantities. The tank farms of such companies usually have a neat appearance, resulting from the uniform painting of all tanks. This procedure also has advertising value. Unfortunately, most of the paints used to protect steel are of the darker colors, usually red or black. These colors accelerate the rate of evaporation. Several companies have solved this difficulty by using a dark colored metal-protective paint as a primer coat, and a paint of any desired color for the final coat. Special metal-protective primers to be used under light-colored cover coats have been placed on the market by several paint manufacturing companies.

In 1986, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a 51, 160-acre portion of the 107,920-acre Diablo Mountain Wilderness Study Area (OR-001-058) in order to evaluate its mineral resources. The study area is located 1n Lake County, OR, about 45 miles northwest from Lakeview. The study area is located near the northwest corner of the Basin and Range physiographic province. Tertiary Picture Rock basalt with tuff interbeds underlies the area (Travis, 1983). No mineral resources were identified; no mines, prospects, claims, or mineralized areas exist in or adjacent to the Diablo Mountain study area.

The Bureau of Mines is currently engaged in a continuing investigation of the thermodynamic properties of certain inorganic compounds. As a part of this investigation, the heat contents of bismuth and cerous chlorides were measured throughout the temperature ranges of 370° to 630° K. and 370° to 1,200° K., respectively. Equations representing heat contents as a function of temperature were derived from the data by the method of least squares. These equations were used to calculate heat contents at selected temperature intervals ranging from the ice point to 650° K. for bismuth chloride and to 1,200° K. for cerous chloride; also, the heats of fusion of both compounds were calculated at their respective melting points. EXPERIMENTAL Materials The cerous chloride used in this investigation was supplied by the National Carbon Company of Cleveland, Ohio. A chemical analysis indicated Ce 56.57 percent and Cl 43.39 percent. No attempt was made to purify the compound or identify impurities since the analysis showed only about 0.04 percent total impurities. Reagent grade bismuth chloride was used without additional purification.

Laboratory test work has shown that the Germania ferberite-scheelite ore can be concentrated to an acceptable grade. A ferberite concentrate assaying 66.9 percent tungstic oxide was made, with a recovery of 75.4 percent. A second concentrate of ferberite and scheelite was made assaying 54.2 percent tungstic oxide. Final beneficiation of combined rougher gravity concentrates was accomplished by roasting, magnetic separation, sulfide flotation, and retabling, to give a final ferberite-scheelite concentrate of 66.2 percent tungstic oxide, with a 91.1-percent recovery. INTRODUCTION This presentation covers the results of laboratory beneficiation tests conducted on tungsten ore from the Germania Consolidated Mines, Inc., by the Bureau of Mines Mineral Dressing Section, Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg. This mining property is near Fruitland, on the southern edge of the Spokane Indian Reservation, Stevens County, Wash. The Germania district produced tungsten concentrates before and after World War I; interest is being renewed in the district because of the metal shortage.

In its search for strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines investigated the Rutherford Mine property in Amelia County, Va. The property was visited by F. W. Horton, mining engineer, and Margaret Fuller Boos, mineral technologist, of the Bureau of Mines, in company with Eugene Dawson, of the War Production Board, on July 16-11, 1943. An exploration program by the Bureau was recommended, and work was started on July 28, 1943, and continued until September 16, 1943. A total of 1,250 feet was diamond drilled in 5 holes on the property.

The effect of comparatively low concentrations of carbon monoxide for short periods and under normal air conditions.of temperature and humidity , with the subject at rest , was studied by Dr. Yandell Henderson and his co -workers . In making recommendations to the New York and New Jersey tunnel commissions * he advised that , if the New York New Jersey vehicular tunnel be so ventilated that persons passing through the tunnel would be exposed to not more than 4 parts of carbon monoxide in 10,000 parts of air for not longer than 45 minutes , they would experience no ill effects . supplementary experiments , carried out by us in connection with our studies at the Bureau of Mines experiment station at Pittsburgh, substantiated this advice . ** In continuing our studies on low concentrations of carbon monoxide , we made a few experiments in a gas chamber where the conditions could be accurately controlled . The Calico silver-barite deposits near Barstow, Calif., are a potentially important resource. Exploration performed by two major mining companies out-lined large tonnages of ore that assayed at 2 to 3 ounces of silver per ton and 7 to 15 percent barite. Laboratory beneficiation work was done by the Bureau of Mines on four samples to develop methods for recovering the silver and/or barite. Cyanidation recovered from 47 to 60 percent of the silver from ore ground to approximately 100 percent minus 325 mesh. Salt roasting minus 10-mesh material, followed by regrinding and cyanidation, recovered 75 to 85 percent of the silver. From 75 to 90 percent of the barite was recovered in a plus 92-percent barite product from either the natural ore or from cyanidation residues. Salt roasting before cyanidation precluded recovery of the high-grade barite concentrate from the leach tails.

The first thought in the case of an accident or contagious disease is naturally that aroused by our humane instinct , how serious is the case and will the person recover ? The economic effects of such cases , owing to their many ramifications , are seldom realized either by those directing mining operations or those engaged in the labor of producing . This paper is based on the accident experience of the State of Utah and the number of cases of two well known preventable diseases , typhoid fever and smallpox , in that State for the fiscal years 1917-1918 , 1918-1919 , 1919-1920 , and 1920-1921 . The data and figures presented are from coal -mining camps only . W. W. Adams , mine- accident statistician of the bureau, contributed valuable corrections and suggestions . The economic results of accidents are considered first , and those of the two preventable diseases later .

In 2004, a total of 4,401 stone mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Stone mines comprised 30.4% of all mining operations.
