This paper on the square-set system of mining embodies the results of a special study of the subject made as a part of the Bureau of Mines general investigation of mining methods and costs. Data for the paper were gathered by the authors during visits to mines using square-set mining, from Information Circulars prepared by consulting engineers to the Bureau on mining methods at individual mines, and from articles in the technical press and the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. The square-set system of mining is very widely applied and is one of the oldest methods in use in the United States. It is mainly employed for extracting relatively high-grade ore in heavy ground. It is also useful in taking out pillars left in mining by other methods. It is used to some extent as an auxiliary method with many underground systems and as an alternate with cut-and-fill, shrinkage, and open-stope methods when heavy ground is encountered. In some cases as much as 50 per cent of the ore may be extracted by square-setting at mines listed as using some other method of mining. A large tonnage is mined yearly by square-setting, principally in the Western States.

Vanadium is subject to only light corrosion in phosphoric acid at temperatures up to 60° C. and has a moderate corrosion rate in this acid at 100° C. It is relatively corrosion resistant in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids up to 60° C, but corrodes rapidly at 100° C. It corrodes rapidly in dilute nitric acid at 35° C. Vanadium is almost inert in 10-percent solutions of formic, acetic, lactic, tartaric, and citric acids; in 9-percent oxalic acid it corrodes slowly up to 60° C. and rapidly at 100° C. Vanadium is resistant to corrosion in substitute ocean water, tapwater, and in 3-percent sodium chloride and 10-percent sodium hydroxide solutions. It is readily attacked, however, by 20-percent ferric chloride, 20-percent cupric chloride and 5-percent mercuric chloride solutions. Vanadium is protected by contact with magnesium, aluminum, and steel SAE 4130 in substitute ocean water, by magnesium and aluminum in 3-percent sodium chloride solution, and by magnesium in tapwater. Vanadium protects copper in substitute ocean water. When vanadium and stainless steel are coupled in sulfuric acid solutions, both metals are usually unaffected by contact, whereas the corrosion rate of titanium in sulfuric acid is greatly reduced by contact with vanadium.

This Bureau of Mines investigation was prompted by the need forr a stable anode for electrowinning metals, particularly zinc and copper, from acid solutions. The polarization behavior of Pb-Ag (1 pct Ag) anodes in H2SO4 and fluoride solutions was determined as the first step in the development of such an anode. A Luggin capillary, dc power supply, high-impedance voltmeter, and other equipment standard to an electrochemical laboratory were used in this study. It was determined that during polarization, a relatively hard, stable coating of Pb02 was formed on the surface of the lead-silver anode and the rate of formation of this coating was considerably enhanced by the presence of fluoride ions in solution. Subsequent investigations at the Bureau of Mines Rolla Research Center resulted in the development of a Pb02-coated titanium (Pb02-Ti) anode. Results of this effort were presented in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 8111. Additional data resulting from extensive testing of the Pb02-Ti anodes, as well as process improvements and innovations, are included in this report. The anodes were considered generally unsatisfactory for zinc electrowinning because of lower conductivity, higher oxygen overvoltages, and shorter in-cell life as compared with the Pb-Ag anodes now being used in industry. However, the PbO2-Ti anodes were used successfully to oxidize waste chromium solutions and to electrowin copper.

Bureau of MinesThe Bureau of Mines studied the development of practical methods for recovering manganese from the extensive domestic resources of low-grade ores and open hearth slags. A one-step operation was developed on a laboratory scale in which manganese and iron compounds are treated with chlorine, volatilized, and separated by selective condensation. Manganese recoveries of 90 to nearly 100 percent were obtained from 9 of the most important domestic ores. Analyses of the manganese chloride product indicated that it was suit-able for aqueous electrolysis with little additional purification. A complete, integrated process that provides for the recovery and recycling of chlorine is proposed. This process appears to have distinct advantages over previously proposed manganese recovery processes, and, in sharp contrast to leaching procedures, it is applicable to practically any manganese-bearing material.

This report discusses some of the chemistry and geochemistry of cesium and rubidium. Knowledge of the cesium and rubidium content of oilfield waters aids in resolving the origin of waters and petroleum, exploring for petroleum and other valuable minerals, discovering water pollution sources, and augmenting the knowledge of geologic formations. The methods described in this report permit the detection of less than 0.01 mg/l of cesium and/or rubidium in a complex oilfield brine or water. Solvents possessing high-dielectric constants were evaluated for their ability to extract cesium and rubidium tetraphenylboron from oilfield waters and for their flame emission characteristics. Nitroethane was selected and used for the extraction and flame spectrophotometric determinations because it gave the highest sensitivity. Cesium 137 and rubidium 86 were used to determine the extraction efficiencies, which were about 87 percent and 58 percent respectively using a single 10 ml nitroethane extraction from a distilled water matrix. The standard deviation of the determination was 0.0008 mg for cesium and 0.0007 mg for rubidium in the 0.01 mg range.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in December 1936 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3324, under the title "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to July 31, 1,936." This list included 170 brand names. Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1937 placed 35 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Ten permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The present list contains 196 brand names, one explosive having been placed on the list subsequent to June 30, 1937. Hydrogen sulphide associated with the gasps and vapors from certain crude oils now produced in the United States has forced a serious health and safety problem upon the petroleum industry. Although the presence of hydrogen sulphide in or occurring with Mexican crudes has been known for some time, it was not until recently that crude oils which give off poisonous amounts of hydrogen sulphide have been produced to any extent in the United State. The injurious effects of this poisonous gas were first recognized by the refiners along; the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts upon receiving shipments of crude petroleum from Mexico. The problem of combating the hazards of the gases and vapors given off by this petroleum become more important as the use of Mexican crude increased. In 1925, the Bureau of Mines and Public Health Service under cooperative agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, studied the causes rend effects of hydrogen sulphide poisoning. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 2312 is report of this investigation, and although written with special reference to refineries, it nevertheless contains much information that is of value to the producer of petroleum.

An important activity of the Safety Division of the Bureau of Mines , in its efforts to reduce accidents , is the safety inspection of mines . Inspections are made at the request of the operators and are not connected with the inspections by the various State departments of mines . The operating management is furnished with a confidential report of the results of the Bureau's inspections , with recommendations for elimination of the hazards found . These mine - safety inspections include a study of mining practices , conditions , and equipment and in some cases the sampling and analysis of mine air and coal dust . The Bureau of Mines has no regulatory powers , therefore the recommendations made in these reports are merely suggestions , and operators are not required to adopt them . Mine inspections are a check on safety standards , methods , and practices and are essential to any accident -prevention program . A foreman or superintendent may be sincere in his efforts to operate a mine safely and believe that he has done everything possible to attain this end . However , experience has shown that because of his familiarity with the mine and the consequent " nearness " of its various features many unsafe conditions may be , and in most cases are , overlooked ; an inspector , particularly an outsider who is trained to look for hazards , can point out the unsafe conditions overlooked by the foreman or superintendent . Some companies employ safety engineers who make regular inspections of their mines , report substandard conditions and hazards found , and make recommendations for correcting them . Unless these recommendations are carried out the inspections have little value . In making recommendations , due consideration should be given to the feasibility of carrying them out ; the management may and very often does consider a recommendation impracticable because of the

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the physical properties of ceramic particulate composites made from titanium nitride (TiN), alumina (AI203), and aluminum nitride (AlN) as part of a program to meet the high-performance demands on structural materials for new and emerging technologies. Samples containing from 20 to 80 wt pct TiN were pressed and fired, and their composition, Vickers hardness, modulus of rupture (MOR), and fracture toughness were determined. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses showed that, depending on the amount of TiN added, the microstructure of the samples consisted of either a titanium-aluminum-oxynitride (TiAlON) particulate in a spinel matrix or a spinel particulate in a TiAlON matrix. The best results of the physical tests were achieved on a mixture of 40 wt pct TiN, 30 wt pct A1203, and 30 wt pct AIN. Sintering aids were added in 1-and 3-mol-pct increments to the 40-30-30 mixture to determine their effect on microstructure and physical properties. Results of an analysis of variancf' on a 4 by 4 factorial analysis showed significant effects on density, MOR, and Vickers hardness.

The Bureau of Mines studied the uniaxial compressive strength of model rock pillars as a function of the angle and spacing of noncohesive planes of weakness. The model pillars were prepared from NX 2-l/8-inch diameter drill core of limestone, sandstone, and granite, and the planes of weakness were diamond saw cuts ground flat and smooth. The angle of the planes of weakness, measured from the horizontal, varied from zero to 57° in approximately 15° increments. When two planes of weakness were used, the thickness-to-diameter ratio of the wafer was 1/4, 1/2, and 1, Approximately 400 model pillars were tested in uniaxial compression. The results indicate that the uniaxial compressive strength of model pillars decreases rapidly as the angle of the plane of weakness increases from 30° to 57°, and that the spacing of these planes of weakness has only a minor effect on the strength. The effect of the number of horizontal planes of weakness, with a spacing of 1/4 and 1/2 of the diameter, upon the compressive strength of model pillars was also investigated. These results indicate that as the number of planes of weakness increases the compressive strength of the pillar decreases. Normalizing the data provides useful estimates of model pillar strengths for any rock type.

All significant results obtained in this way are made public through published reports. Any mineral sample sent to this Bureau for simple identification will be subjected to a cursory examination.

"In preparing this paper, an attempt was made to obtain results of plant-scale carbonization tests on washed and unwashed coal tram to same mine. A letter. in which the following questions were asked, was sent to some 50 coke-oven superintendents and others who might be interested:“What is the influence of washing coal on:(1) The chemical and physical properties of coke, as for example, the size, the amount of breeze, the fracture, strength, cell-structure, etc.(2) The quantity and quality of gas and by-products.(3) The capacity of the ovens.(4) The composition of the coal..""Your general opinion, as well as any specific data or results of testa, on this important subject will be greatly appreciated.""Of the 45 replies received, 24 stated that they had never used washed coal; 11 had used washed coal but had no comparative data on similar coals washed and unwashed; 7 answered some of the questions based on their general experience; and 3 gave some test data on Pittsburgh bed coal from western Pennsylvania. In none of the three tests did the washed coal come from the same mine as the unwashed. The washed coals in the three tests were from the same washery - one of modern construction in which the operations are under careful technical control in order to give a uniform product containing a minimum of surface moisture. The unwashed coals which were previously used in these plants were from different nearby mines in the same coal bed, and were supplied by the same company. Obviously, no sweeping or finale conclusions can be drawn from these few tests on coal from a single washery. Therefore, the writer vas obliged to consult the literature, coal-carbonization and coal-washing engineers, and other authorities to supplement the fragmentary information gleaned from the questionnaires in order to present a picture of chat gas engineers may expect from the use of washed coal in a carbonizing plant."

USBM Contract H0133045 consists of the design, build and test of 50 waveform generators. The waveform generator is a small ULF transmitter operating in the 1 to 3 KHz frequency range for the purpose of locating trapped miners during a mine disaster. This contract provided for the design, test, and building of 50 waveform generators using a discrete component construction with an option of using hybrid construction techniques within 105 days after the effective date of the contract. Because of large quantity economic considerations, this option was not initiated. Two engineering models were designed, constructed and tested and 50 final production units were fabricated using discrete construction. Complete documentation is supplied under a separate package which includes final schematics, parts list, layout information, equipment specification, production test procedures and qualification test procedures. Ten units have been delivered to the USBM. The remaining 40 units are being retained for packaging under contract H0242010 Transmitter Package and Receivers. A great deal of experience has been gained as a result of this contract. A final discrete potted printed circuit configuration has been arrived at that is now ready for field testing. After field testing, any desired changes should be incorporated into a final design. However, as a result of the current experience gained building and testing the production units, this printed circuit package together with potting procedure could be improved to reduce future costs. For example, the printed circuit board could be increased in size by 0.125 to 0.2 inches and all components could be mounted directly to the board eliminating costly hand stacking of components. This paper presents a review of published investigation dealing with the importance of sulfur compounds in the deterioration of materials or providing some basis for estimating the extent of loss shareable to such air pollution. Materials included are cement, stone, metals, paint, leather, paper, sand cloth. The investigations may be divided into two classes, one of the laboratory type in which the sulfur content and the humidity of the air were controlled and the other dealing with the exposure of materials to atmospheres not under control. The first type of work has shown that cement is subject to deterioration by the action of sulfur dioxide gas. The experiments with stone indicate that although limestone takes up sulfur dioxide, from the air, moist sulfur dioxide-air mixtures alone cannot be used for establishing- the comparative weathering- qualities of the different types of stone by accelerated test methods. Laboratory tests indicate that sulfur compounds in the air accelerate the corrosion of iron, steel, zinc, copper, and nickel at normal air temperatures and at certain relative humidities. It has also been indicated that certain types of paint are, affected by high sulfur dioxide concentrations, and that paper is attacked by sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere. The investigations of the second type show the amount or variation of corrosion in different localities and under different types of exposure. The investigations (10) (18)4/ during which sulfur determinations were made indicate that sulfur dioxide is a main controlling factor in the corrosion of iron and steel but according to Quick (18) may not be for some nonferrous metals. In general, the laboratory tests do not Jive definite data on the loss due to sulfur compounds at the concentrations normally found in the air. The data from atmospheric exposures are not complete from the standpoint of the exact effect of the sulfur compounds. Damage to materials so exposed is affected by factors such as other chemical contaminants, humidity, rainfall, solid deposits, and sunlight. There are three researches upon the specific heat of water vapor by the method of explosion that are sufficiently advanced in technique and suitable in plan to justify careful study of their results , with the double purpose of fixing the best available experimental values and indicating the attainable accuracy of the method. These three researches comprise the work of Pier , Bjerrum , and Siegel.5 The work of earlier date than Pier's suffers from obvious inaccuracy of measurement , while the experiments more recent than Siegel's , such as those of Womersley6 , of Bone and his collaborators , and of Maxwell and Wheeler , 8 are for the most part not well designed for the accurate determination of the heat capacities in question . Some of the errors to which they are especially subject have been discussed by David and by David and Thorp.
