Maules Creek mine is an open cut coal near Boggabri in the Gunnedah Basin of New South Wales, Australia. The mine is currently operating at an annualised run rate of 9.5Mt of saleable coal. The plan is to ramp up production to 13Mtpa. Maules Creek has multiple seams each with varying depths; the inter-burden ranges from a few metres thick to greater than 30m (98ft). Due to this, Maules Creek mine is utilising truck shovel operations rather than a cast/dozer push operation.

Any organization that subjects its activities to a continuous improvement methodology, aiming to optimize their processes and services, must be able to adequately measure the results of the implemented changes to pursue better outcomes. This is no different for mining companies. When it comes to blasting, an accurate fragmentation analysis can correlate blast design and rock mass parameters to particle size distribution, enabling us to further analyze the correspondence of specific design patterns, applied to specific rock mass properties and the result in measured fragmentation indicators. Over time, many tools were developed for us to obtain PSD data, albeit each of them had their own shortcomings. The first ones to be developed involved photographing the muck pile including a scale object, uploading those photos to a PC, and using specialized software to analyze each one. As a result, analysts would get a PSD curve that served as reference for the performance of the blast. This method, which is still used, has major shortcomings. The most obvious one is that it is only able to capture a slice of the blast, which corresponds to the exposed section of the muck pile the analyst has access to, and even there its reach is limited to the areas that are safe for getting close enough for placing the scale, which are not many. Consequently, this is a very limited way to get a fragmentation performance assess for a blast. Currently, autonomous systems are capable of taking continuous pictures of the muck pile. Installed on a shovel, conveyor belt or crusher feed, these systems can take a continuous stream of pictures that are later analyzed automatically without the need of human intervention. These systems greatly increase the volume of data and, consequently, we have a PSD curve that is more representative of the blast performance. However, this technology still had issues when trying to sample front end loaders mining operations or getting results from underground blasting due to the inherent difficulties of these operations. New algorithms used for capturing and processing data for front end loaders can overcome the harsh environment of their operations and produce PSD data in high vibration environments and difficult mining angles. For underground mining, algorithms can be used to sample each truck exiting the mine, giving a reliable source of fragmentation analysis that can be traced back to their stope of origin. The development of this technology extends the existing system’s capabilities and helps us in our efforts to improve fragmentation results with each blast.

Ground vibration produced by blasting operations within South Florida, due to saturated soil conditions, generates surface vibration waves that may be measurable over distances of 3 - 5 miles from the source, and perceptible at distances of up to 2 miles. Structures above ground usually receive the most of the attention from the effects of high vibration levels. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s substantial resources were devoted to research focused on producing oil from the vast oil shale reserves in the western United States. Since the oil is solidified in the pore space of the shale, extracting it in production level quantities presented monumental technical challenges. Major advances were made in the methods used to extract oil from the shale in large quantities. Extraction methods evolved to culminate in the underground in-situ retorting process. In-situ retorting relied on explosive blasting of the shale to fragment the rock and induce sufficient porosity and permeability for a burn front to propagate through the oil shale. That burn front consumes some of the oil and liberates a substantial portion of it (~30%) for collection and further processing. Oil shale retorting is a blasting intensive process where the entire retort is rubblized in one very large, delay timed blast. Retort 7 in Western Colorado consumed 540,857 lb of slurry explosive to rubblized 348,940 tons of oil shale. Current rock blasting fragmentation predictive capabilities have evolved substantially since these retorts were designed and tested. It is the purpose of this study to simulate the explosively induced fragmentation of oil shale using state-of-the-art computer codes and material models and to infer retort design implications for future development.

In the current context of heightened concerns with explosives security, there is significant interest in technological controls to improve security. It is important to be able to control what is fired, by whom, where and when. This paper describes research Orica has performed to investigate and test biometric systems to address the question of "by whom". The goal of this research is to incorporate the most suitable biometric system onto the 'blaster' unit of an electronic initiation system. This approach will ensure that only authorized personnel can initiate a blast involving electronic detonators. Requirements analysis: we initially explored many different biometric technologies to evaluate them against the requirements, including security, usability, ruggedness, size, form factor, privacy, and operational temperature range, This analysis identified chip based fingerprint sensors as the best candidate. Development of prototype units: in order to test the identified sensors, we modified standard, commercially-available, electronic blast initiation units ("blaster") to incorporate a fingerprint reader. Testing and evaluation: Biometric We conducted a biometric scenario evaluation in order to determine: 1) security level (measured by false accept rate (FAR)); 2) usability (measured by failure to enroll (FTE) and false reject rates (FRR)), and to 3) discover environment specific issues and challenges (such as temperature, humidity, dirt, or those related to the usage patterns of the user group). Tests were conducted at quarry sites in eastern Ontario, Canada. Results show rates of: FAR= 0%, FTE= 1.67%, FRR= 28.81%. Overall, these results suggest that this fingerprint biometric technology has a good level of usability in this application of electronic blast initiation control.
