We report preliminary results for a group of unique samples collected with MBARI’s ROV Tiburon on August 12, 2005. The samples were collected from the East Blanco Depression (EBD) diffuse-flow hydrothermal field, which was determined in a previous study to cover an area of at least 100 m by 80 m (Hein et al., 1999). The survey reported on here extends that field to more than 1500 m in an approximately N-S direction. The EBD, a pull-apart basin, occurs near the western end of the Blanco Fracture Zone (BFZ), which connects the Juan de Fuca and Gorda Ridge spreading centers (Fig. 1). The samples were collected from a waterdepth range of 3343-3380 m.

In November 2004, Australia lodged with the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf possible new maritime boundaries in relation to Australia’s continental shelf extending beyond 200 nautical miles from the Territorial Sea Baseline (Colwell and Symonds, 2005). If agreed by the commission, just over half of Australia’s land mass will lie below the sea, and Australia will have one of the largest marine jurisdictions in the world (14.41 million km2). With this jurisdiction comes a responsibility to manage and sustain the marine environment (McConachy, 2006). Knowledge of minerals and their resource potential is part of this responsibility but is generally poorly known (McConachy, 2005).

"The underwater search for the passenger aircraft MH 370 produced rare high resolution datasets of the ocean floor of extraordinary size and detail. The survey design and operations were for sole purpose of finding the aircraft debris field. The aircraft was not found in the detailed search area and the survey was suspended. As planned, the data are now being made available to scientists and researchers. The large survey area includes geologic settings that might be prospective for seafloor minerals. A review of the data can provide insights to seafloor mineral prospectivity in the Southern Indian Ocean and is a large dataset that can be used to calibrate object detection for the design of dedicated mineral exploration surveys.Economic minerals in the Southern Indian OceanOceanographic research and scientific drilling cruises have assembled geologic and geophysical data points in the Southern Indian Ocean. These, together with satellite derived bathymetry and gravimetric data, earthquake mapping, and mapping of magnetic anomalies have, even if they lack detail, produced a general understanding of the main tectonic features and plate movements in the Southern Indian Ocean as well as contributed some marine mineral data.The Southeast Indian Ocean Manganese Pavement, a large manganese nodule field south of Diamantina Fracture Zone was discovered in 1970. Dredging and photographic data from the discovery cruise determined that dense nodule accumulations cover 900,000 sq. km."

"Two types of metallic deposits have been found in the deep Arctic Ocean: Hydrothermal Fe, Cu, and Zn sulfide deposits form along Gakkel Ridge in the Eurasia Basin and associated ridges between Greenland and Europe; and iron and manganese oxide crusts (Fe-Mn crusts) and nodules, precipitated from seawater onto rock surfaces in the Amerasia Basin, contain many rare metals of economic interest. Fe-Mn crusts and nodules collected in the Amerasia Basin during 2008, 2009, and 2012 cruises on the USCGC icebreaker Healy are characterized by unique mineral and chemical compositions, very high Fe/Mn ratios, fast growth rates, and other unique characteristics compared to those formed elsewhere in the global ocean. These characteristics reflect temporal and spatial variations in geological, oceanographic, and climatic conditions in the Arctic Ocean and surrounding continents over the past ~15 Myr.RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONSDiscrimination diagrams show that the crusts and nodules found in the Amerasia Basin north of Alaska are hydrogenetic. However, the mineralogy is not typical for hydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts and nodules, which usually include only amorphous Fe oxyhydroxide and ?-MnO2 (vernadite). The Arctic samples also include the Mn oxides birnessite and 10Å manganates (todorokite, buserite, asbolane), and the Fe minerals also include goethite, lepidocrocite, feroxyhyte, and ferrihydrite. This mineralogy reflects formation under lower oxygen conditions than typical for samples formed elsewhere.The Amerasia Basin crusts have a unique chemical composition compared with crusts from other areas of the global ocean. The key difference is the high Fe contents relative to Mn contents, which determines the types of trace metals hosted by the Fe-Mn oxide phases, and their concentrations. The high Fe/Mn ratios reflect the expansive continental shelves (>50% of the Arctic Ocean) and upper slopes that support redox cycling and release of Fe and other metals to bottom waters, and to the large fluvial input from North America and Siberia. Brine formation on the shelves and currents promote the distribution of the metals throughout the Amerasia Basin, including the deep basins."

Fine-scale dating is a key parameter in characterizing the growth history of hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts. We once compared several dating methods, micropaleontological (calcareous nanofossil), radiometric (10/9Be), and paleomagnetic (step-wise measured inclination) methods on single samples, but these independent methods were not consistent with each other (Joshima & Usui, 1999). For example, a 4-cm thick crust was dated as 3Ma by the fossil-paleomagnetic combined method, while it dated older than 5.5 Ma by Be-10 dating. This discrepancy suggests a question if the Be-10 radiometric method can give us false ages or growth rates (Usui et al., 2002) because of post-depositional change, diffusion or other reasons. In order to answer the question, we conducted ultra-fine magnetostratigraphy with a SQUID microscope on the same hydrogenetic Mn crust sample. Rock magnetic measurements revealed that the main magnetic mineral is well dispersed single domain grains, which is typical to magnetite but not yet specified (Oda, 2005).

Deep Reach Technology, Inc. recently completed a multi-year cooperative research project for the U S Army Research Laboratory for the purposes of investigating recovery of rare earth elements from the seabed. This research led to the discovery of a potentially economical deposit in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Cook Islands. In order to further develop this resource, Ocean Minerals LLC (OML) was formed in 2016 to explore the development of a deep-sea mining project to recover rare earth elements and scandium from the upper 10m of sediment in promising areas of the Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone. OML and the Cook Islands Investment Corporation signed an Agreement in 2016 giving OML exclusive rights to explore a 12000 sq km area and option rights over an additional 48,000 sq km. This poster presents the current status and activities related to this project.

NAUTILUS MINERALS is a leader in the commercial exploration for and evaluation of seafloor massive sulfide (?SMS?) deposits. Nautilus has exploration licences covering 15,000 sq km of seafloor in Papua New Guinea and is evaluating other areas in the Western Pacific. The Nautilus Western Pacific Gold-Copper project is an interesting case study of the interaction of the disciplines of Science, Engineering and Environmental Science to solve and attend to the challenges of a project without precedence. The Science books of geology and marine biology with respect to seafloor massive sulfides are still being written or at best are thin volumes with recognition still we know very little at this time. Science?s early discoveries and study of these mineral processes on the seafloor provided invaluable data from which to develop an exploration strategy and the genesis of Nautilus itself. The Engineering required for development of such deposits is a combination of yet to be tested ?theory and engineering principles? and adaptation of best practice from other fields such as oil/gas and telecommunication cable laying. The Environmental guidelines for exploring these deposits, let alone mining them, is at the moment still being debated by a panel of experts chosen by the International Seabed Authority.

The smelting leaching process is known as one of the most favorite methods for the processing of deep-sea manganese nodules because of its smaller environmental impact and easiness of manganese recovery. The sulphuric acid pressure leaching of the matte prepared from deep-sea manganese nodules was studied to dissolve the valuable metals. Almost complete dissolution of Cu, Ni, and Co from matte was achieved under the following conditions: leaching temperature 180°C, time 4 hours, PO2 10 kgs/cm2, acid concentration 2.5% (vol/vol), pulp density 5%, ammonium sulphate 40 g/l. Under these conditions the iron concentration of leach liquor was 0.95 g/l. Optimization of leaching parameters was carried out by statistical design of experiments using 23 full factorial matrix. The linear and interaction co-efficients were evaluated for dissolution of metal values and also for iron concentration in leach liquors.

The GeoERA Co-Fund action is a joint contribution of 48 national and regional Geological Survey Organisations from 33 European countries “Establishing the European Geological Surveys Research Area to deliver a Geological Service for Europe (GeoERA)”. This is an ERA-NET action under Horizon 2020. The aim of GeoERA is to fund transnational projects contributing to the best use and management of the subsurface, addressing the following four themes: Geo Energy, Ground Water, Raw Materials and Information Platform. The European Commission recognises the significance of raw materials through its Raw Materials Initiative (RMI), the European Innovation Platform on Raw Materials (EIP-RM) and Horizon 2020 funding, specifically through Societal Challenge 5 – Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials. The GeoERA Raw Materials Theme will contribute to research and innovative developments for minerals inventory, minerals yearbook, exploration, mapping, modelling, metallogeny and critical raw materials in the pan-European framework including the sea. A major element in Europe’s long term economic strategy is to ensure security of supply for strategic and critical metals as part of the Blue Growth Strategy developing sectors that have a high potential for sustainable jobs and growth as seabed mining. The project MINDeSEA results of the collaboration between eight GeoERA Partners and four Non-funded Organizations at various points of common interest for exploration and investigation on seafloor mineral deposits. The Geological Surveys of Spain, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and Ukraine are organisations with responsibility for coastal, marine geological investigation and mineral resources studies and mapping in their respective countries. The Non-funded participants: the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera; the United States Geological Survey; the All-Russia Scientific Research Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the Ocean; and the Geosciences Institute, host important databases, they have an international reputation for excellence in both science and technology, and are internationally-known experts on seafloor mineralisation and hydrothermal systems. This project addresses an integrative metallogenetic study of principal types of seabed mineral resources (hydrothermal sulfides, ferromanganese crusts, phosphorites, marine placers and polymetallic nodules) in the European Seas. The work program includes all the regional seas around Europe comprising the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea (Fig. 1). The MINDeSEA working group has both knowledge of and expertise in such types of mineralisation, providing exploration results, sample repositories and databases to produce innovative contributions. Gas Hydrates (Methane Hydrates) are solid, ice ? like substances composed of water and natural gas. They occur naturally in areas of the world where methane and water can combine at appropriate conditions of temperature and pressure and are found in the ocean bottom sediments and in some permafrost areas. Besides temperature and pressure, factors like bathymetry, sediment thickness, sedimentation rates, and total organic carbon content (TOC) also control gas hydrate formation in the sea. The stability of gas hydrates depends on the critical high pressure ? low temperature combination (0-17 bars, 0-25ºC), which in turn dependent on the mix of gases from which the mineral is formed. As the critical parameters can be altered by deposition, erosion or slumping of sediments, formation or melting of ice cover, rise and fall of sea level and sudden temperature changes induced by tectonic activities, current flows or volcanisms, the gas hydrates tend to be very unstable. It is becoming increasingly evident that naturally occurring gas hydrates are significant component of the shallow geosphere and are of societal concern in at least three major ways: as an energy resource, a geologic hazard and a major contributor for climatic changes.

In 1995 the Marine Minerals Technology Center (MMTC) of the University of Hawaii conducted a sidescan sonar survey and sampling expedition of the submarine geology and hydrothermal systems surrounding the active volcano White Island. The island is located in the Bay of Plenty, within the geothermally active Taupo Volcanic Zone off-shore of the North Island of New Zealand, and is the site of numerous shallow-water hydrothermal systems. The survey system, an EdgeTech DF1000 sonar, was a dual frequency 100 kHz & 500 kHz sonar capable of imaging the seafloor at better than 1 m resolution and possibly detecting gas bubbles within the water column. Sidescan imagery clearly shows sand channels, debris slumps, submarine landslides, and volcanic ridges all around the island to roughly 800 meters offshore. However, analyses of the both raw and processed acoustic data indicate that the sonar was not able to image any of the shallow-water hydrothermal gas seeps known to exist around the island. Vents were located using a commercial fish finder and knowledge from local tour guides and divers. Eleven gas samples from three different sites were collected by divers for analysis of chemical and isotopic composition. Rock samples were collected from thirteen underwater outcrops for correlation with existing data on subarial island flows sampled by previous investigators. Thin sections and XRF analysis were done for each rock to determine mineral assemblages along with major and trace elements, which were used to tie submarine samples to specific subarial stratigraphic layers.

Recent focus by terrestrial mineral explorers (and investors) on cobalt has increasingly highlighted the future critical need for this metal, with new-age batteries being the primary utilisation. We present an overview of the world’s current terrestrial cobalt resources and put this in perspective of currently known seabed resources, particularly polymetallic nodule and crust deposits. We focus on comparison of the key exploration, development and exploitation risks for such deposits, and provide a framework for financial evaluation and appraisal.

Alaska's expansive continental shelf represents future opportunities for marine mineral development. Although today's metal prices and subsidized foreign mineral production continue to discourage industry investment in marine exploration worldwide, the longer term outlook is one of increasing costs on-shore with a dwindling land-base available on which to search for and extract minerals. Likely, the generations of the 21st century will increasingly recover their minerals from the sea-floor. Though largely unexplored, Alaska potentially represents a major port ion of the U.S. marine resources. Several factors demonstrate this. First, the Alaskan OCS is huge; 74% of the entire United States' continental shelf lies off of Alaska, and 54% of the U.S. coastline is Alaskan. Combined with the jurisdiction waters of the Soviet Far East, the Bering-Chukchi shelf is one of the world's largest tracts of shallow water. Second, Alaska is situated at the northwestern terminus of the mineral-rich American cordillera. From Chile to Alaska, major on-shore deposits of precious and base metals, ferroalloys, and industrial minerals are found in the tectonically disturbed belts of the cordillera. In 1988, the western U.S. cordilleran states produced 70% of this country's mineral output (excluding construction materials). Throughout the cordillera's entire 10,000 mile length, the rock units strike largely parallel to the coastline, but in Alaska they extend directly offshore and onto the continental shelf. The National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), Marine Geology and Geophysics Division and co-located World Data Center-A for MGG archives and distributes global marine sediment data from U.S. and international sources. NGDC is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service. NGDC offers a variety of digital marine sediment data sets including sediment descriptions, textural analyses, geochemistry, paleontology, paleomagnetism, and well logs. Some data sets are compiled by outside sources and sent to NGDC for distribution; many are received under exchange agreements and through the World Data Center system. Other data sets are compiled at NGDC, frequently in cooperation with other government agencies or academic institutions. One of the best examples of the latter is the Index to Marine Geological Samples, or "Core Curators' Database".

The source of ore metals for base and precious metal volcanogenic massive sulfide (vms) deposits has been debated for decades. Metals can be obtained from high-temperature sea water-rock reactions in subseafloor circulatory hydrothermal systems, or provided by the magmatic fluids that are degassed from magma. The magmatic signatures are largely erased in the hydrothermal system by the overwhelming, long-term circulation of seawater. Melt inclusions in phenocrysts (plagioclase, olivine, pyroxene) of volcanic rocks provide an effective means of understanding the potential for a magmatic contribution to the ore-forming fluids. We present results of a melt inclusion study on the volcanic rocks that host active seafloor hydrothermal fields in the eastern Manus immature back-arc pull-apart basin of Papua New Guinea and an Ordovician-age back arc in New Brunswick, Canada that hosts the ?giant? (330 mmt) Brunswick #12 vms ore deposit. A fluid phase is typically observed in cavities within melt inclusions, indicating that the magma was saturated with volatiles prior to its eruption. The fluid is CO2-dominated with lesser H2O and CH4 in melt inclusions of mafic volcanics and is H2O-rich in felsic volcanics. Tiny crystals and amorphous precipitates (recrystallized at Brunswick #12) of Fe, Ni, Zn, Cu and Mn chlorides, sulfides and oxides coat the walls of the vapor cavities. The crystals include magnetite, magnesite, calcite, anhydrite, gypsum, barite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, halite, silicates and apatite. At Manus, the compositions of the precipitates on the bubble walls of melt inclusions are similar to those found in the vesicles in the matrix glass of the same sample. The ore metals in the volatile phases changed from Ni+Zn+Cu+Fe ? Cu+Zn+Fe ?Fe+Zn (+Pb?) as the magma evolved from basalt, basaltic andesite ? andesite, dacite ? rhyodacite, rhyolite. Glass of the melt inclusions compared to that of the matrix of the rocks from Manus have significantly higher concentrations of H2O (av. 1.64 vs 0.7wt%), Cl (av. 2500 vs1300 ppm) and S (av. 900 vs 100 ppm) suggesting that these volatiles were extensively exsolved from the magma. A minimum of 1.0 to 1.7wt% of magmatic volatiles is estimated to have been degassed before and during the eruptions. The focused discharge of a magmatic fluid as a result of pre-eruptive degassing could be responsible for the metals in the sulfide deposits on the seafloor. If 1 km3 of magma were emplaced in a shallow chamber, then the associated magmatic fluid would be 35.1 million tonnes. If this fluid contained 2.3 wt% Zn and 7.2 wt% Cu (Yang and Scott, 1996, Nature), a total of 0.8 million tonnes of Zn and 2.5 million tonnes of Cu would be to the hydrothermal system.

Manganese nodules, as metal ores, have for the most part been cast aside from further consideration within this century. However, in the decade of the 90s, rising demand at all levels of society, for clean air give nodules a new - lease on life as a stack gas cleaning agent. Further, the Clean Air act of 1990, mandates enormous outlays to bring systems into compliance with new stringent standards. Quick corrective actions are imperative. Research beginning in the 1960s proved nodules possess unique qualities to remove acid compounds from stack gases. Early this year, the National Science Foundation awarded General Electric an $83 million contract to design a system to extract oxides of sulfur and nitrogen from coal fired power plants. Environmental damage is abundantly evident on the ground, from the air as well as form space. A dirty pall of yellow-brown smog is smothering both animal as well as plant life around the globe. Losses run into billions!

"SeaTech Solutions International (S) Pte Ltd, Singapore are the designers of world’s first seabed mining ship. The ship is now under construction and expected to be delivered next year. The Deep Sea Mining industry is eagerly awaiting commencement of her seabed mining operations and the success of this story will go a far way in accelerating investment in Deep Sea Mining and hopefully we should see many such projects take off and many such ships launched in the near future.Based on own experiences SeaTech discusses in this paper, various important issues that need to be considered for design of such Deep Sea Mining ships, the challenges faced and possible solutions to address them.From a ship designers’ perspective, there are not many direct previous references available, the seabed mining methods and associated equipment are also a new technology & products are still developing, there is no standard method and equipment for processing of mineral ore onboard, and above all there is the huge challenge of loading, storage and discharge of ore cargo efficiently in the confines spaces. Associated with the uncertainties of such issues is the uncertainty of weight, space, power, services and maintenance requirements, which can vary through the design and construction period and put the initial ship design at huge risk. Sufficient design margins need to be provided and a constant & strict control is absolutely necessary to ensure that the budget on each technical aspect is not exceeded. The local strength of the vessel particularly needs to be robust to take ultra-large loads due to huge equipment and their lifting /handling equipment/winches and tall mining process modules."

The Chilean part of the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, situated south of latitude 62o S, is within that country?s Región de Magallanes y Antártica, and separated from the remainder of Chile by the Magellan Strait. In recent geological history several phases of Quaternary age glaciers originating in the Andean and Dawinian Cordilleras eroded assumed primary gold deposits and entrained their related alluvial deposits. Piedmont glaciation extended to the east and south over m0st of the land and beyond the present-day coastline into extensive areas exposed during the resulting lowered relative sea level. During interglacials particulate gold incorporated unevenly in the widespread drift, till and moraines was fluvially released and concentrated into streams and flood gravels. Coastal erosion enriched various beaches with gold. From 1868 onwards Tierra del Fuego hosted a major gold rush whereby early, labour intensive, beach mining eventually developed into inland dredging. But continued mining activity was interrupted and then terminated by several external factors. Most miners, always seeking ?greener pastures?, joined the rush to the new discoveries in the Klondike (1896) and Nome, Alaska (1899). In 1904 the international boundary, established in 1881, became the subject of a major dispute not settled until 1984, The Panama canal?s opening in 1914 turned Tierra del Fuego, previously on the Pacific-Atlantic shipping route, into a remote backwater. World War II brought opposing foreign naval forces to the actual islands where most gold had been taken from the beaches. It also crippled the dredging industry which lost its coal supply and never recovered. Nevertheless, some small scale mining continues to this day.

The North Fiji Basin (NFB) is a mature intraoceanic back arc basin with an age of ~12 Ma. Recent volcanism and spreading activity are focused along the Central Spreading Ridge (CSR), A ridge segment more than 800 km long, composed of four main segments, the N160°, N15°, north-south (N-S), and southernmost segments from north to south. The dominant volcanic rock in the entire central spreading ridge is normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB), very similar to those emplaced along mid-oceanic ridges. Conversely, influence of an oceanic island basalt (OIB) source increases northward from 18°20'S. Several basalts which show a significant subduction-related component are also observed in the southern part of the NFB. Hydrothermal activity along the spreading centers of the North Fiji Basin was investigated by several previous works, especially by the STARMER project in 1989 and 1991. Both extinct and active hydrothermal vents are found on the N15° and N-S segments. In contrast, only traces of hydrothermal activity have been found on the N160° segment. Although high temperature activity and related massive sulfide deposit on the N15° segment was further investigated by several follow-up studies, no systematic survey for other hydrothermal sites was conducted after their discovery. In 2012 and 2013, KIOST performed two hydrothermal expeditions aboard the R/V Onnuri in the three targeted areas of hydrothermal activity along the CSR of North Fiji Basin. "TOML’s ISA Contract comprises six areas (A-F) that span from 118° to 152° W and from 7° to 15° N or over 70% of the CCZ.During a 2015 exploration cruise, TOML scientists found that the a logging system developed by ISA (2010) was able to be adapted and enhanced, to describe in some detail the varied morphology of nodules both within the TOML areas and between them.The shapes and sizes of nodules seen were then found to relate to substrate type and setting, and thus likely thickness and long-term stability of the geochemically active layer. Consideration of the various processes that might influence growth helps constrain nodule formation further.
