Over the years, several sources have stressed the need to better integrate the underground mine design and planning processes. The belief is that with better integration, better designs and plans will result - designs that are ?optimized?. Some researchers have focused their efforts on data integration, others have looked at closing the loop between production control & monitoring with mine planning & scheduling. In spite of all these efforts, fully integrated applications combining geological modeling, stope design and geomechanics, mine planning and scheduling, rock extraction and material handling system design, mine support systems, economic analysis with production control do not yet exist for the underground hard rock mining industry. There are several likely explanations - some economic, some technical. It is certain that the design and planning processes are interrelated and interdependent and thus are extremely complex to describe and understand. The mining engineer has an appreciation of the complexities involved - but how does he convey this knowledge to a programming team responsible for developing an integrated design & planning system. This paper will focus on software engineering methods, and other possible approaches, to describe and manage the complexities inherent in the underground mine design and planning process and the development of an integrated computerized system.

A working code is developed to simulate the forces that are involved in the process of penetration of a bucket into bulk media during loading and excavation. The result of this work can be integrated with the simulation software that many manufacturers of heavy earthmoving machines introduce for training purposes. The simulator programs for machines such as backhoes, loaders, LHDs and the like, used for operator training, are usually only based on the kinematics of the machine. As a result, there is no indication of the effect of the medium when the cutting tool of such a machine touches the excavation material. This is like moving the machine in the air. Feeling the resistance force of medium to cutting by a bucket or blade during loading and excavation is more realistic, both mentally (by vision) and physically (feeling resistance in pedals and levers). The results from force simulation can be used by feedback in creating simulated resistance in these training gears, similar to what is done in flight simulators for aircrafts. In addition to serving for the above purpose, the results of this work can be used as a tool for examination and verification of the effect of a control policy for automation of loading and excavation of bulk media. So far no commercial product has been introduced that has such a capability, despite some extensive research on the subject.

It is well known that the performance and carbon emissions associated with the modern gas turbine engine depend critically upon the properties of the nickel-based superalloys, particularly those used in single crystal form. However, the design of all alloys in current use has been essentially empirical, or at best heavily reliant upon regression/neural network analysis of experimental datasets. In this paper, alloy design approaches [1] are described which are able to identify new alloy composition spaces which are worthy of experimental study. It is shown that a large amount of design data can be generated, which can be interpreted in different ways. Of course, the success of the approach depends heavily upon the accuracy of the underlying sub-models. Estimates of the creep resistance, cost, castability, density and oxidation resistance are made. It is demonstrated that these methods allow quantitative trade-offs to be made between the properties of interest.

Refractory used for molten aluminium confinement is typically assessed separately for thermo-physical properties and molten aluminium resistance. This present work provides a case study comparison of four commercial refractory products that were subjected to a test procedure that combines mechanical impact, thermal shock with molten aluminium contact. The main conclusion of this work is that physical and mechanical property values by themselves do not, and cannot, predict the response of refractory to potential interactions between molten aluminium contact and thermal shock and mechanical impact. Adequate physical simulation is imperative to quantify the effect of such interactions.

The AG/SAG circuit discharge P80 is now increasingly referred to as the “Transfer Size” or T80 for short. From the literature it is apparent that in circuit design some approaches to the sizing of AG/SAG mills as well as the ball mills that they feed use this parameter. This paper reviews whether the use of the T80 is appropriate in this context. In the course of the review examples of AG/SAG discharge size distributions measured from range of operating circuits are used to illustrate the arguments made.

Oxidation of the third generation cast single crystal, nickel-base superalloy CMSX-10 is examined using isothermal tests at 900°C and 1000°C for times ranging from 20 hours to 100 hours. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive secondary X-ray analysis were used to characterize the microstructure. It was found that the external scale formed at 1000°C is made up of (Ni,Co)O and the spinel NiCo2O4. The (? + ? ') microstructure of the superalloy transforms into the intermetallic (3 phase prior to the onset of internal oxidation. Internal oxidation results in the formation of (Ni,Co)Ta2O6 and (Ni,Co)WO4. No evidence was found for the formation of alumina (Al203), and the spinels NiCr2O4 and NiAl2O4 in this third generation superalloy. Results of the laboratory investigation are compared with those of an aero-engine turbine blade removed from service and examined earlier.

For generations, the mining industry has been committed to work toward developing new technology that can improve safety and increase production. Now with a more environmentally conscious society and tighter environmental regulations, a natural progression for the industry is to develop and take-on ?green? or environmentally friendly technologies. Not only could this improve the sustainability of operations, but could also reduce the long-term environmental impact footprint that is left behind. Algae represent a new frontier in research and development. As discussed specifically in this paper, algae, specifically microalgae, can be used for the production of biodiesel and other green chemicals by exploiting carbon dioxide and waste heat contained within process off-gasses. The potential positive benefits of this approach in terms of contribution to community and the environment are significant, and the focus of our research and development on microalgae production technology.

The process of arriving at the size and grade of: (a) a newly-discovered body of mineralization, (b) a potential ore resource, (c) an orebody proposed for mining, or (d) the ore reserves in a mine, requires fundamental geological, and geometrical determinations as well as physical and chemical analyses. This paper outlines geological and geometrical features considered critical, in the authors' experience, in realistic reserve determination. These are discussed under the headings "The Four Cs". They include the Character, type or nature of the mineralization; the Continuity of various types of mineralization in the deposit; various key concerns in the Calculation besides the mathematics; and the Classification section which refers to basic considerations in classifying a mineral estimate. It is suggested that the responsibility for the calculation of a Resource or Reserve should be that of a geologist experienced in the ore type under review. Further, it should be the responsibility of the board of directors of the company owning the deposit to ensure that a sufficiently experienced person is chosen to carry out the process.

"Abstract- Two examples are used to describe how geological features impact on the development of semi-variogram models to be used for geostatistical resource/reserve estimation of porphyry-type deposits. In the Main zone of the Huckleberry porphyry copper deposit, mineralization is concentrated in fracture zones localized in volcanic rocks, along the eastern and southern margins of a granitic stock. Mineralized volcanic rocks can be subdivided into three separate domains, each with its own preferred direction of mineralization that is reflected in contoured Cu diagrams and semivariograms.The East zone at Huckleberry deposit, spatially distinct from the Main zone, is controlled by a fracture zone elongate roughly east-westerly and bounded on the south by a major fault (easterly striking and steeply dipping) across which there is a dramatic drop in grades. The eastern part of the East zone appears to be coaxial with a large intrusive body; the western part contains a small, elongate dike-like intrusion. Contoured Cu values for many levels suggest that the principal direction of geological elongation of the east and west domains of the East zone differs significantly. Independently derived semi-variogram models for each domain are different and reflect this difference in trend.In both Main and East zones of the Huckleberry deposit, block estimates by ordinary kriging are significantly different using a domain-specific semi-variogram model than using a deposit-general semi-variogram model. The domain-specific estimates are deemed better because they are based on local controls of mineralization and have less conditional bias than those generated by the depositgeneral semi-variogram model."

RISKGATE is an interactive online risk management system developed by the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC; University of Queensland) to assist the mining industry in implementing continual improvement in management of major unwanted events, and so maximising health and safety performance. A comprehensive body of knowledge has been compiled from diverse mining industry experts for risk management of tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives, manual tasks and slips/trips/falls. This paper presents an overview of the body of knowledge captured from diverse mining industry experts for the management of unwanted strata incidents, and explosions in the underground environment. This knowledge is divided into a series of initiating events within both topics (as listed) with further degrees of classification based on design, operation, and management concerns. "Discounted cash flow analysis provides a means of relating the magnitude of expected future cash profits to the magnitude of the initial cash investment required to purchase an asset or to develop it for commercial production. The objectives of discounted cash flow analysis are to determine:.. The net present value of a stream of expected future cash revenues and expenditures... The rate of return which the expected future cash flows will yield on a given level of initial cash investment.In the case of mineral properties, discounted cash flow analysis is generally accepted as the preferred method of valuation, whenever sufficient data are available to permit its reasoned application. Sufficient data are required to support estimation of all of the individual elements of cash revenue and cash expenditure which will be associated with the development and operation of the property, up to the end of its estimated life. It is the accuracy of these input estimates which determines the validity of the resulting determinations of profitability and rate of return on invested capital.In undertaking any discounted cash flow analysis, it is important to recognize certain fundamental attributes of the mining industty:.. The basis of any mineral development is the existence of an ore reserve... Costs are determined by the number of tonnes mined and processed, while revenues are determined by the number of pounds or ounces of metal produced. The two are related by the recovered grade of the ore... Profit is typically more sensitive to changes in revenue than it is to changes in cost... Commodity price is a principal determinant of revenue, but it is also the factor with which is associated the greatest level of financial risk.In the end, of all of the factors which must be considered in the discounted cash flow valuation of a mineral property, the most significant are the reliability of the reserve estimate, particularly with respect to recovered grade, the price at which the product is to be sold, and the risk of not maintaining the projected level of price."

"Abstract - We present a new approach for the evaluation of the potential of emerald reserves in gem projects using beryllium (Be) mobility. The distribution of Be in the different phases of hydrothermally altered (albitized) black shale hosting Colombian emerald deposits indicates that Be mobility is associated with the breakdown of Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide phases. The amount of Be that can be mobilized (~0.7 x 10-6 g/g; i.e., 0.7 ppm) may represent up to 18 wt% of the total Be contained in the black shale. A mass balance calculation applied to a well-constrained alteration zone of the Chivor mines, and based on the quantification of Be that can be mobilized under hydrothermal conditions, gives an estimate of the total gem reserves of these mines. Resumé - Une nouvelle approche, basée sur la mobilité du béryllium (Be) pour l’évaluation des réserves d’émeraude dans des projets d’exploitation de gemmes est présentée. La distribution du Be dans les différentes phases minérales de schistes noirs hydrothermalisés (albitisés) qui contiennent les gisements d’émeraude colombiens, indique que le Be mobilisable se trouve dans les oxyhydroxydes de fer et de manganèse. Design and validation of an integrated guidance system for articulated ground vehicles is investigated. The development of an autonomous industrial vehicle must take into the account the specific geometry of these vehicles; they can be composed of a tractor with 1 or 2 trailers or of articulated type like LHD. Moreover the tractor-trailers type vehicles can have on-axle hitch configuration or positive/negative off axle configuration. The path-tracking of a tractor-trailer vehicle in restricted space is presented and discussed in this paper. Recent results obtained in simulation and validated by experimentation are also presented. These studies can lead to better ways of maneuvering an articulated vehicle in a restricted space or automatically executing of docking and parking maneuvers

"Breccias with angular and rounded clasts of a late-mineralization, ""barren"" hornblende porphyry dike set within a comminuted matrix consisting of rock fragments and quartz, cemented by quartz and K-feldspar of hydrothermal origin is observed in diamond drill cores from the Sar Cheshmeh porphyry copper deposit. Studies of age relationship between vein types, phyllic-altered clasts and the breccia groundmass suggest that the brecciation is a late event. The breccia clasts record evidence of hydrothermal reaction between the clasts and fluids responsible for the brecciation.Formation of bornite, in the breccia clasts of the originally barren hornblende porphyry dike, and in the breccia matrix, along with the scarcity of bornite in the Sar Cheshmeh deposit itself suggest involvement of fluids which are later and of different composition from the fluids responsible for the known mineralization at Sar Cheshmeh. These later fluids may be related to a later plutonic event and suggest the possibility of a later, and concealed deposit."

Environmental issues have evolved considerably over the last two decades. The main contributing factors, to name a few, have been the changing values of our modern societies, the globalization of trade and its linkage to environment, evolution and accessibility of information/communication technologies, better educated populations, climate change, long range transport of toxics and the increasing influence of NGOs and multistakeholders. As well, environmental management of mining operations had to be realigned in order to meet these new realities and to respond to more elaborated regulations oriented towards sustainability. Environmental Management Systems (EMSs) have emerged and have been introduced to meet not only the assurance of conformance to regulations but also to prevent pollution and to apply the continuous improvement of mining processes. EMS models have been developed and certification to international standards (e.g. ISO-14 001) is a common practice. Globalization has imposed challenges and additional requirements to environmental management. Developing a mine in emerging countries implies dealing with international agencies, local communities and a variety of government infrastructures to obtain a ?licence to operate?. This paper presents the structure of our EMS and how we have adapted its implementation to our operations in South America.
