The microstructure and tensile properties of AZ31B-H24 magnesium (Mg) alloy after friction stir welding (FSW) were evaluated. The grain size was observed to increase from approximately 5 µm to about 9 µm after FSW. The obtained Hall-Petch type relationship showed a strong grain size dependence of the hardness values. While the FSW led to about half of the yield strength of the base magnesium alloy, the ultimate tensile strength after FSW could reach about two thirds of that of the base alloy. The hardening capacity of the FSWed samples was about twice of that of the base alloy. The strain hardening exponent of the base alloy was found to be about 0.1 whereas it became larger than 0.3 for the FSWed samples. After yielding the base alloy showed a high initial and almost constant work hardening rate, corresponding to linear hardening stage II, followed by stage III with a decreasing hardening rate. Stage II linear hardening was observed to be absent in the FSWed samples.

"Areas of bubble contact were delineated for cassiterite in the presence of chloride, fluoride, sulphate, phosphate, oxalate and citrate ions using dodecylamine hydrochloride collector. The limits of pH, and the minimum collector concentration were established using the bubble pick-up technique.Bubble contact did not occur below the p.z.c. (point of zero charge), estimated to be 4.7, in the presence of chloride ion, and fluoride ion showed only a weak response in the same pH range. These anions are considered to act as indifferent electrolytes. Activation at pH values below the p.z.c. was obtained with sulphate, phosphate, oxalate and citrate ions; the greatest response was by oxalate and phosphate ions extending pick-up to between pH 2.0 and 2.5.Activation appeared to be strongest when anionic protonated species were in maximum concentration. Strong activation also corresponded to the formation of very stable metal ion species, thought to be formed on the surface of cassiterite, between exposed stannic ions and modifying anions; dodecylammonium ions being absorbed on the surface so modified."

"The removal of iron asgoethite from the high iron bearing solutions generated in zinc hydrometallurgy using a strong airflow device was investigated. The influence of oxygen flow, copper ion concentration, temperature and reaction time on iron precipitation as goethite was studied. The optimum conditions were: oxygen flow 0.2-0.35m3/h, copper ion concentration 0.25-0.5g/L, temperature 80-90oC, zinc oxide powder neutralizing agent and a reaction time of5to 7hours. Under the optimal conditions, the Fe2+concentration was reduced to 0.025g/L after iron precipitation, and the goethite residue contained 38.7wt.%Fe. The SEM and XRD analyses showed that the iron was present as well formed FeOOH crystals in the iron residue, and the amount of iron sulphate was very low. Production practice shows that, when the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 11.61g/L and 4.08g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 1,439kg/day. When the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 14.51g/L and 2.73g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 2,454kg/day. This represents a ~70 percent increase in iron removal.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of iron removal is to produce a small volume of iron residue, and our industrial goethite process meets this requirement. The high Fe(II) solution in our reactor isoxidized/hydrolyzed to precipitate goethite and the precipitate is sent to a pyro metallurgical furnace for final residue treatment. Some literature discusses (DengYong-guiet al., 2008;Meiguang-guiet al., 2001;Zhongzhu-qianet al., 1980) research on iron hydrolysis; one of the reported rate limiting parameters was the low availability of the oxidant when using air and another was the inhomogeneous air distribution. There are two iron hydrolysis-goethite precipitation methods; the Electrolytic Zinc process (EZ) and the Vieille Montagne process (VM) (Lei Xiang, 2006; Xuguo-qiang, 2007;ZhaoYonget al.,2005). The EZ method hydrolyzes the Fe3+directly to FeOOH. The weakness of the EZ process is the low recovery rate of the associated minor metals. The VM method reduces the iron to the ferrous state and then oxidizes the Fe(II)to Fe(III),with simultaneous hydrolysis/precipitation of the Fe(III) as FeOOH. Before iron hydrolysis, the minor metals, such as indium, could be selectively precipitated, because Fe(II)requires a high pH for hydrolysis. Exploration strategies have traditionally considered felsic gneiss complexes of the Canadian Shield sterile. This paradigm is challenged with the discovery of extensive granulite-facies Cu-Au, Fe oxides-bearing hydrothermal systems in the 1.4 Ga Bondy and 1.5 Ga La Romaine volcano-plutonic complexes of the Grenville Province. Early identification of magnetite-rich units in association with meta-exhalite and pelite-like units was key to targeting the search for mineralization, protolith information and indicators of pre-metamorphic hydrothermal activity during regional surveys of these frontier terrains. Textural evidences for a volcano-plutonic setting were found. There remained, however, numerous impediments to the recognition that the ubiquitous magnetite-laden units and associated aluminous gneiss were hydrothermal in origin. Many metamorphic reactions form magnetite at the amphibolite to granulite facies transition, and hydrothermally-leached rocks resemble metapelite or migmatitic restite, while carbonate alteration zones may look like marble or calc-silicate rock. Non-typical metamorphic mineral assemblages, modes and colours arise when hydrothermally-derived rock types are metamorphosed. These effective markers served as tools for reliable field identification of hydrothermally-altered rocks. In our case-studies, we traced pre-metamorphic hydrothermally-driven Fe-oxide precipitation in association with sericitization, albitization, pyrophyllite alteration, chloritization, and B enrichment by mapping unusually high contents of (1) magnetite or hematite, (2) biotite, (3) albite, (4) sillimanite, (5) orthopyroxene or phlogopite with cordierite, and (6) tourmaline or kornerupine. The unveiled garnetite, tourmalinite, and aluminous gneiss had assemblages that vary according to metamorphic grade and composition. To assess if high mode of Fe-Mg-Al phases resulted from partial melting (restitic residue) or metamorphism of hydrothermal rocks, we compared leucosome mineral assemblages, shape and amount with that expected of in situ partial melting reactions. In both areas there is no compelling evidence for these units to be restites. In contrast, the presence of lapilli in garnet-cordierite-sillimanite gneiss, though extremely rare, constitutes conclusive evidence for extreme pre-metamorphic high-sulphidation alteration of a volcanic protolith, while Fe-oxides or sillimanite-bearing nodules and veins record a less pervasive alteration. Geochemical research on element mobility and mass balance calculations further testified of an hydrothermal origin for these gneisses. The magnetite-rich units, together with calc-silicate rocks, garnetite, hornblendite, albitite among amphibolite, provided effective guides to sites of fluid discharge and led to the discovery of Cu and Cu-Au showings. With the presence of highsulphidation alteration, these features suggest early Cu-Au VHMS-type alteration halos within a predominantly felsic composite volcano-plutonic arc setting for both case-studies. Evidences for subsequent F-driven orthomagmatic fluid activity are also present.

The evolution of twinning in an AM30 Mg alloy was examined by uniaxial tension and compression testing at temperatures from ambient to 250°C and a strain rate of 0.1/s. The samples were cut along the extrusion direction from extruded AM30 Mg alloy tubes. Specimens deformed to various strain levels were examined by optical microscopy and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) techniques. The results indicate that the initial extrusion texture plays an important role in the formation of different types of twins and that the twinning behavior also depends on the strain path. Contraction and double twinning are the dominant twinning mechanisms in uniaxial tension, while extension twinning prevails in uniaxial compression. The different twinning behaviors are shown to be responsible for the sharply contrasting strain hardening characteristics of the experimental flow curves.

A très court terrne, une usine sera construite pour la production de cinq à dix millions de Iivres d'aimants permanents par annee et à long terme qu'une usine de fabrication par robotique de moteurs à aimants permanents, utilises dans I'industrie automobile. La poudre de ferrite à base de strontium est une compose ferro-magnétique forme d'une molécule d'oxide de strontium et de six molécules d'hernatite. Ce compose d'hexa fluorite de strontium a une force tres puissante et fournit la source d'énergie magnétique la moins dispendieuse comparée aux autres aimants permanents. L'utilisation des aimants de céramique formes d'hexa fluorite de strontium a connu un croissance phenornenale depuis 1970 pour atteindre un marché de 500 millions de livres par année en 1985.II n'y a aucune autre usine de production commerciale de poudre de ferrite à base de strontium au Canada. Le facteur determinant qui a favorise l'etabilissement a Port Cartier est base sur la réduction de 30% du cout des aimants de cerarnique provenant de notre poudre. Notre debouche majeur se situe aux États-Unis et vise la production des aimants de cerarnique pour les moteurs utilises dans les automobiles, les ordinateurs et les appareils ménagers, L'objectif de cette compagnie est de réduire le prix futur des aimants de cerarnique à environ 30% du prix actuel.L'usine commerciale de production de poudre de ferrite est maintenant opérationnelle. Le financement et la construction de cette usine sont Ie résultat de l'opération d'une usine pilote sur une période de 5 ans afin de récupérer l'hematite d'un haut niveau de pureté provenant de résidus de I'usine de bouletage de la Compagnie Minière Québec Cartier (CMQC) à Port Cartier. La fournaise de CMQC est utilisee pour chauffer les boulettes cornposees d'un mélange de carbonate de strontium et d'hematite d'un haut niveau de pureté en étalant environ 5 tonnes à l'heure de ces boulettes au-dessus du tablier de boulettes de fer dans une des fournaises fonctionnant à environ 450 tonnes à l'heure."

Many metallurgical processes use submerged gas injection to increase the contact area between gas and liquid phases in order to promote faster overall reaction rates. The work presented in this paper is part of an experimental investigation to measure the gas-liquid interfacial area available in bubble plumes within molten metal baths. Measurements of the nitrogen absorption rate during submerged injection into molten iron baths have been used to estimate the interfacial areas of the bubble plumes. A theoretical model was used to predict the superficial nitrogen transfer rate under mixed liquid phase mass transfer -interfacial reaction control. The interfacial area was calculated by dividing the overall nitrogen absorption rate by the superficial rate. Reasonable agreement was obtained between the interfacial areas measured in our laboratory with data from a comparable system reported in the literature. The experimental results were compared with the predictions of three theoretical models and one empirical correlation. The models of Turkdogan (3) and Zhao and Themelis (5) gave the best agreement with our data.

Laboratory studies had shown that the magnetite contained in serpentine asbestos ore was not uniformly distributed. Ore particles containing chrysotiye fiber responded to a magnetic f field; particles containing little or no chrysotile were essentially non-magnetic. Larger-scale tests, run with a magnetic pulley being fed various asbestos samples ranging in size from 1/4 inch to 5 inches, confirmed that magnetic separation could be used as a concentration step in an asbestos mill. Magnetic concentration was installed at the Black Lake and National mills of Lac d'Amiante du Quebec and has allowed the extraction of lower-grade ore, increasing the life of the mines. In addition, preconcentration early in the flowsheet increased the value of the feed to the fiber recovery section. An increase in fiber production was achieved, as well as a decrease in maintenance costs due to removal of flow-grade tailings early in the flowsheet. Magnetic concentration of a coarse tailings from the mill resulted in recovery of additional fiber previously discarded to tailings.

Historically, there has been little incentive to process copper-arsenic concentrates by leaching, rather than via established smelting operations. However, with ever tightening environmental emission standards and more arseniferous concentrates being produced, increasingly sophisticated and upgraded off- gas handling facilities are required in smelting operations, generating greater quantities of challenging metallurgical dust. In this context, oxidative pressure leaching offers distinct advantages. The current state of pressure leach technology delivers high extractions from copper concentrates, while producing an environmentally stable process residue, without atmospheric emissions of sulphur dioxide or arsenic. However, as was shown in an earlier study, copper extractions and environmental leach residue stability are impacted negatively by arsenic levels above 2.5 to 3.0 wt%. In further studies on pressure leaching of copper concentrates, Sherritt has developed process conditions that allow even highly arseniferous (> 7 wt% As) feed materials to be converted into environmentally stable residues, with excellent copper extractions. At the same time, pressure leach residues can be generated that are amenable to silver recovery via direct cyanidation, without pre-treatment by lime boiling or hot curing. The results of pilot plant test work are discussed. INTRODUCTION As the production of copper has expanded over the years, resource exploitation has extended beyond relatively clean, high grade and easily accessible ores, and copper sulphide concentrates increasingly come with higher levels of contaminants, such as As, Hg, Sb and Bi, and lower copper and sulphide sulphur concentrations. However, as concerns on the impact of the emission of such contaminants into the natural environment have mounted, import/export restrictions have made the trading of copper concentrate more difficult, and, in particular, the export of concentrates with greater than 0.5 wt% As; under ever tightening environmental emission standards, these lower quality concentrates can be a significant strain on the off-gas handling facilities in smelting operations. The processing of arsenic bearing copper concentrates is, therefore, an increasing challenge as copper producers seek to exploit more complex mineralization and to extend the life of their operations. In this environment, processing arsenical copper concentrates with high temperature pressure leaching (>200°C) must be considered as an alternative to pyrometallurgical processing. Leaching kinetics for copper minerals at these temperatures are rapid and acid is generated for potential use in heap leach operations. Pressure leaching of copper concentrates eliminates gaseous emissions of arsenic and sulphur, while generating environmentally stable residues, as measured by the Toxicity Characteristic Leach Procedure (TCLP) (Kalanchey et al., 2007). Both medium and high temperature pressure leaching of copper concentrates have also proven themselves technically on an industrial scale (Marsden et al., 2004) with high copper recoveries.

Continuous laboratory solvent extraction of gold from cyanide solutions using LIX?79 guanidine based extractant has been investigated. Different variables that affected the selectivity and extraction include aqueous pH, extractant concentration, and modifier concentration. The extraction isotherms of the aurocyanide complex with respect to the other cyano anions were compared, and the following order of selectivity Au > Ag > Zn > Cu > Fe was observed. According to the pH isotherms, aurocyanide can be extracted in an alkaline media, and a better separation with respect to the other cyanoanions was obtained in the pH range 10.5-11.2. From the McCabe Thiele diagrams, better recovery was predicted when using LIX?79 extractant and tridecanol modifier at 10 vol.%. Stripping of the gold from the loaded organic was carried out at pH > 12 using NaOH and NaCN solution. The continuous tests indicate that a two-stage extraction followed by a single stage strip is adequate to obtain an overall process efficiency of >90%. Better results were obtained using a copper wash stage before gold stripping.

"The Cheminis gold mineralization zone is approximately 6.5 km west of the Kerr Addison Mine along the Larder Lake Shear Zone, in the southern part of the Abitibi Greenstone Belt. The zone is very similar in appearance to the flow ore at the Kerr Addison Mine and occurs at the same stratigraphic position. Drilling has demonstrated that the gold mineralization at Cheminis persists to a depth of over 3000 ft .The mineralization is hosted by a pyritic, tuffaceous sediment which occurs within a sequence of volcanics and sediments which have been pervasively carbonatized. The gold is largely enclosed within pyrite grains and the amount of gold in the layers of pyrite increases in the layers closest to a graphitic f ault zone.It is suggested that the gold mineralization may be primarily related to the syngenetic sulphide concentrations formed during fumarolic activity on the seafloor along the Larder Lake Shear Zone. At a later stage a hydrothermal event associated with alkalic volcanism may have resulted in regional carbonatization and further concentration of the gold in the vicinity of fault zones."

CRANGES in construction ideas and the continually rising costs of labour and conventional building materials, particularly since World War II, have prompted widespread investigations into the development and adaptation of new materials to meet the new requirements and to help reduce costs. Lightweight aggregates have been prominent in these investigations. The lightweight aggregates most commonly used today are foamed slag, cinders, pumice, diatomite, exfoliated vermiculite, expanded perlite, and bloated clay or shah. Lightweight aggregates contribute to the building industry in several ways: ( 1) in large structures the reduction in deadweight effected by the use of lightweight materials reduces the amount of reinforcing and structural steel necessary to support the structure; ( 2) the decrease in weight of lightweight blocks makes handling easier and faster; (3) pre-fabricated floor and roof slabs and tilt-up walls of lightweight concrete have become feasible and popular; ( 4) lightweight aggregate concrete has good nailability and is easily channelled; (5) concrete and plaster made with lightweight aggregate have good heat and sound insulation properties.

The Sulphide-Preview Lakes area is located 45 km northeast of La Ronge in northern Saskatchewan. It lies within the southern portion of the Proterozoic La Ronge Volcanic-Sedimentary Belt. Two styles of gold mineralization are present in the Sulphide Lake area , stratabound gold mineralization is intimately associated with a pyrite-pyrrhotite-arsenopyrite-bearing graphitic argillite unit within a sequence of intermediate to felsic volcaniclastics. Past operators established three mineralized zones along this horizon with combined reserves for two of the zones, of about 175,000 tons at 0.22 oz/ton Au. In the Preview Lake area , gold mineralization occurs in variably sheared gabbro/quartz diorite sills within a mixed sedimentary-felsic volcaniclastic sequence. Gold occurs with arsenopyrite, pyrite and minor chalcopyrite associated with quartz veins and stringers. A sulphidebearing graphitic argillite unit occurs in close proximity to the mineralized shears. Past operators delineated seven mineralized shear zones, two of which were drilltested. Average gold grades reported are in the 0.1 to 0.2 oz/ton range with erratic values up to 5.0 oz/ton.

Security and safety due to environmental impact as well as the radiological consequences during the uranium mining operations, tailings management, uranium processing, disposal of waste in conventional landfill sites are matters of great importance. The Uranium National Company (CNU) from Romania is responsible for all aspects belonging to the management of the entire Romanian uranium industry- the uranium ore extraction, transport and processing of uranium ore, concentrates processing, as well as disposal of sterile ore and waste. The paper will presents specific safety problems related to the identification and evaluation of potential environmental risks, as well as possible radiological consequences associated with the disposal of sterile and the uranium processing waste resulting from processing of the uranium ore. Computer codes will be used, such as IAEA INTERTRAN II and RADTRAN 5. It is also to be noted that this paper considers the main results of the scientific research carried out by the main author as CSI (Chief Scientific Investigator) for Romanian Research Contract on NORM concluded with IAEA Vienna.

The article will present a comparison of classifications of resources according to the JORC Code System with Polish classification, basing on system used in Eastern Europe. The differences between these classifications are significant. The information about mineral resources in Poland is not comparable to the main international system of reporting reserves like JORC, SAMREC, and PERC. Although comparisons between these systems are used, the transfer of particular categories of resources from the Polish system into a JORC category is not simple. Basing on the examples of privatization of Polish coal companies through initial public offering on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, the current practices providing guidelines how to convert resources from the Polish classification to the JORC system are described. Such independent assessment of resources is necessary for development of Mineral Expert?s Report (MER or CPR) which is an integral attachment to the prospectus.

Joining of superalloy Inconel 61 7 with a foil interlayer using transient liquid phase bonding (TLP) technique was studied. Inconel 617 is a solid solution, Ni - Cr - Co- Mo alloy with an exceptional composition of high temperature strength, oxidation, carburization resistance and thermal stability. In this investigation, two bonding temperatures, 1065°C and 1150°C, and two interlayer thicknesses with joining times varying from 5 minutes to 24 hours were employed. Experiments were carried out using nickel base interlayer (A WS BNi-3) with boron as the melting point depressant (MPD) element. Joints were characterized using optical microscopy, SEM, FEG-SEM, EBSD, XRD and microhardness. The results indicated that the rate of elimination of the liquid phase with increasing the bonding temperature, holding time and decreasing the thickness of the interlayer increased. The main precipitates in the diffusion layer had platelike and blocky morphologies for both bonding temperatures and all holding times.

Tele-operation manipulators applied in this paper are systems for the remote handling and management of pyroprocessing related facilities in an Argon cell of the KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute). Generally, these kinds of systems are composed of a master-slave system and its peripherals installed along the wall of the cell, with the master transmitting the user?s own motion to the gripper directly. This study introduced various considerations and modifications to improve the remote handling performance. The analysis of an operator's ability using his/her own upper arm motion range while manipulating the MSM, and considerations of its manipulation margin and the related tool modifications are also included. Finally, the test results of several remote handling tasks are presented, and an adequate operation strategy for the tele-operation system of hot-cell type facilities is proposed.

Dispatch systems have been used for open pit mining since the early 1980?s but similar systems do not widely exist for underground mining. There is a need for developing dispatch systems for underground mines, particularly highly automated operations such as block caving. An innovative method, Agent Based Modeling (ABM) for a dispatch system for a block caving operation, is proposed in this paper. The model is based on a particular behaviour observed in social insects. The focus of the ABM dispatch system is adaptability with respect to changing operational conditions and effective integration of maintenance modules with the operation. The paper will show the advantages of this innovative method compared to existing similar systems.
