"Planning for coal beneficiation in the electric utility industry is relatively complex, involving the coordination of experts and specialists in a broad range of fields, as well as compliance with a wide variety of government regulations.This paper examines the role of the planner, reviews possible benefits of coal beneficiation, identifies potential problems and illustrates a typical planning schedule.The steps involved in the planning process are:Step I-Bench- and pilot- washability studyStep 2- Wash plant designStep 3- Power plant and boiler designStep 4-Mine designStep 5-Major environmental and technical problems to address.IntroductionElectrical utilities and coal have a long and intimate relationship . Cleaned coal is becoming an increasingly popular fuel with the utilities for a variety of reasons. Generally, the greatest impetus to burn a cleaned or prepared coal fuel comes from the need to control airborne pollutants.Long-range planning is a standard practice for electric utilities, forecasts of demand must be made well into the future. Since the lead time required to provide new facilities is often as long as 10 years and the cost very high , planning becomes an important task.For a utility that owns and directs the operation of its coal mines, the mine planning or fuel acquisition planning takes on the magnitude of other corporate planning functions. It is from this perspective that a utility would view coal preparation. Except for the interaction of a coal-fi red plant on the actual mine design the planning considerations o f a beneficiating facility for a captive mine or a contract raw coal supply are about the same. Because TransAlta Utilities is currently supplied from captive mines, this discussion will tend to focus in that direction.It is the role of a planner to plan. This is easy to say but it is not always easy to do. Often we are working within a context that resembles the geological time scale. Frequently the objectives are not clearly defined when we begin and ultimately our plans are tested in the waters of government regulations and cost benefit analyses .Planning for beneficiation of Plains coal, or any coal, provides just such a test. The planner's role in this endeavour requires a wide vision. While parts of the process may be amenable to classical methods of project scheduling, the broad range of subjects and interaction of seemingly unrelated tasks is sure to obscure some of the considerations that must be made. Therefore, the planner's chief role is coordinating the work of many experts and specialists toward the final objective.Among the specialists are combustion , geo technical, mining, civil , and mineral processing engineers , geologists, hydrogeologists, soil, and reclamation experts to list a few.When one considers coal beneficiation, the planning part o f that consideration is probably more complex than any other single engineering function. Due to the company's location in the Alberta Plains and the proximity o f the mine to the thermal generating station, this paper will tend to emphasize that situation.Beneficiation may offer some advantages over run-of-mine coal to the power plant opeator. Some of these advantages are: removal of a contaminant, power plant efficiency gains , lower plant capital costs (for new plants), possible lower mining costs."

"The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Homestake Mining Co. and the University of Utah, is conducting a field demonstration to evaluate the behaviour of rock masses supported with cable bolts. One of two rock masses being studied is supported with both conventional and birdcage cables. This rock mass is located between the 6500 and 6650 levels of the 45-48N stope, 21 ledge. The second rock mass is the hanging wall of the D-limb stope between the 3500 and 3650 levels near the Ross Shaft and is supported with conventional cables. The primary objectives of the project are to monitor the behaviour of the two rock masses during mining using extensometers and cable support strain gauges, after which the rock will be modelled using the finite-element code UTAH III. Field data will be used to verify the modelling. In addition, a comparison between the effectiveness of conventional and birdcage cables will be made.45-48N StopeThe 45-48N stope is located in the 21 ledge between the 6500 and 6650 levels and contains about 233 000 short tons of mineable ore. The orebody lies within the Homestake Formation and is very irregular being approximately 200 ft long and 75 ft wide. Between the 6500 and 6650 levels, it dips from 35 degrees to 60 degrees east with a near-vertical plunge to the south. Mineralization is characterized by arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite with minor gold. The contact between the Homestake and the overlying Ellison Formation creates a plane of weakness along localized graphitic layers. The footwall dips at approximately 60 degrees but between 100 ft and 120 ft above the 6650 level , the hanging wall flattens to almost 20 degrees causing a significant mining problem."

Many leading copper and other mineral processors have rapidly adopted advanced controls in last 5-10 years. Almost 600 multivariable predictive controls have been installed in mineral processing, and almost 50% of those are in copper concentrator plants. In most cases, mineral processors rely on 3rd party support to implement these advanced technologies. One challenge facing advanced control user is the selection providers and services for these technologies. The trend has been towards the use of multivariable predictive control and use of technology provider’s services. This paper will discuss status of advanced control, and the merging trends in the mining industry. A review will be presented of how advanced control is being applied in the mining industry over the last decade, and how user challenges are being overcome. Next the emerging uses of multivariable predictive control (such as multi/inter-unit optimization), focusing on the latest trends in concentrator plants. Finally, a review will be made of emerging technology advances in the that can be advantageous to mineral processors. INTRODUCTION Review of advanced control in mineral processing Advanced controls are serving an increasing role to improve processing plant operations and profitability. As advanced control is being installed into more mining processing plants such as copper concentrators, many of these plants are concerned about the selection technologies and vendors to support the installation and maintenance of these controls. In a study by Jonas and Craw (2011), they found that most new users have not had prior experience with advanced controls. It is the author’s experience of almost 30 years in advanced controls that most mineral processers considering advanced controls can benefit from better understanding of the technologies and their support requirements.

"Detailed mineralogical examination of gold-bearing rocks, ores, concentrates and other samples should be considered an integral part of any study of a deposit for which exploitation is being planned. Adequate mineralogical study, although time consuming and often costly, can significantly improve understanding of the mineralization, can help to optimize the results of any metallurgical testing and can be of great value in case of potential trouble-shooting. The advantages and disadvantages of various examination techniques are discussed with reference to a number oj mineralogical studies oj Canadian gold-bearing samples.IntroductionVarious authors, notably Gasparrini (1983), Harris (1989) and Henley (1990), have stressed that mineralogical study of gold ores is critical to successful and efficient beneficiation. Only in cases where diagnostic cyanide leach testing is successful can detailed mineralogical examination be disregarded. Such examination of gold-bearing rocks and metallurgical products is all too often neglected because the methods involved are believed to be time-consuming, costly, and may carry a considerable degree of inaccuracy. Commonly, bulk metallurgical testing is, carried out without prior or concurrent mineralogical examination, causing the results of the testwork to be difficult to interpret, or in some cases, misleading. This, in turn, may lead to> significant delays to the project at the feasibility stage or mean that understanding of the sample is limited, preventing the introduction of prudent modifications at a later stage if problems arise. Mineralogical studies may guide the successful implementation of a metallurgical test program."

"The Gondor Zn-Ag-Pb-Cu deposit is a stratabound massive sulphide lens occurring within Archean volcaniclastic rocks of the Yellowknife Supergroup. The deposit is located in the west-central portion of the Slave Structural Province, approximately 350 km north of Yellowknife.Initial diamond drilling at Gondor has outlined a steeply dipping, L-shaped, folded, massive sulphide body, which may be traced over a strike length of approximately 800 m, and to a depth of 350 m. True widths of up to 40 m have been intersected in the thickest part of the deposit. Preliminary estimates suggest that the deposit contains a minimum of 7.5 million tonnes grading 6% Zn, 50 g/tonne Ag and less than I% combined Cu and Pb. In addition, significant gold, grading up to 2.8 g/tonne, occurs in some parts of the deposit. The mineralization is open both down-dip and along strike.The Gondor deposit lies conformably within a predominantly east-west striking, north-facing sequence of felsic to intermediate volcaniclastic rocks. Coarse fragmental rocks are abundant in the hanging wall, whereas ash and lapilli-tuffs predominate in the footwall. The main structural feature in the area is a large-scale, steeply northeast-plunging, Z-shaped fold. The sulphide mineralization lies within the synformal portion of this fold, with the thickest part of the deposit coinciding with its hinge zone. Several episodes of faulting have also affected the local stratigraphy.The wallrocks of the Gondor deposit were hydrothermally altered prior to the onset of medium-grade regional metamorphism. A halo of altered rocks surrounds the massive sulphide lens, with no apparent difference in the degree of alteration between the hanging wall and footwall strata. The alteration zone is characterized by the addition of MgO and K20 and by the depletion of Na20 and CaO. These changes are reflected in the mineralogy of the altered wallrocks by local enrichment in chlorite, biotite, muscovite and cordierite.The mineralized zone is medium- to coarse-grained, well-banded and is composed largely of pyrite, quartz, and sphalerite with subordinate galena and chalcopyrite. Preliminary studies of metal distribution indicate that a lateral zonation is present, with lead enrichment in the central part of the deposit, and copper enrichment toward both ends. Stringer-type copper mineralization has not yet been discovered in the footwall of the Gondor deposit."

This month, Tax Notes examines tax legislation from a different angle, and sees some bright spots.The following article is based on a paper presented by the author at the International Gold Symposium in Rio de Janeiro in August 1989Introduction""No man's life, liberty, or property are safe while the Legislature is in session.”With one federal government, ten provincial governments, and two territorial governments all claiming to have constitutional rights to tax and otherwise regulate Canada's mining industry, and with each of these thirteen governments pursuing their respective rights with some vigor, government involvement in one way or another is an accepted way of life in the industry. While one's initial reaction to government involvement in an industry might be one of scepticism or fear, generally speaking the federal, provincial, and territorial governments in Canada tend to be pro-mining. They recognize the importance of the mining industry to Canada, especially in terms of job creation and exports. It is not surprising, then, to find that an array of valuable fiscal incentives are available to the industry through federal and provincial legislation.This paper summarizes the principal incentives that are inherent in Canada's tax legislation, as well as the Canadian Exploration Incentive Program. Although it is beyond the scope of this paper to deal with all of the incentives that are available, it is noted that various forms of federal or provincial assistance are also available outside of specific legislation, through negotiation with government departments. This latter type of assistance is generally directed toward helping with the cost of infrastructure such as roads or hydro lines, or Jess often toward loan guarantees or similar financing assistance."

"Overburden covering bedrock uranium deposits was sampled to depths of 29 m and Rn concentrations measured at the same depths. Total-alpha activities, V concentrations and Rn emanation (J) of the samples were measured. The U-flux into the overburden was greater in the past: oxidation and dissolution has since removed most U, leaving decay products which indicate the presence of U deposits when U itself does not. Distributions of U and decay products and their ratios to each other reflect U-migration and degrees of U-removal. Rn distribution in overburden is related to the J of overburden samples and the presence and movement of groundwater. Simple, rapid methods of total-alpha and J measurement are described.IntroductionThe overburden drilling apparatus developed by Bondar-Clegg and Company makes possible sampling and radon measurement in overburden from the surface down to about 50 metres. This apparatus was used here to study the diffusion of uranium and its decay products from ore deposits into over lying overburden at the N deposit of the Amok Ltd. property (Cluff Lake, Saskatchewan) and on the Imperial Minerals Ltd. property at Gooderham, Ontario. These ores are enclosed in bedrock; the overburdens were deposited by glaciers or streams. The migration of uranium and its decay products in such situations and the factors which affect it have been little studied in the past, as readily usable techniques for mapping it in three dimensions have not been available. The results reported here are somewhat sketchy and preliminary, but they indicate the value of the methods used and some of the patterns to be expected. Surface and subsurface sampling and measurements were carried out on 3-line grids crossing known zones of mineralization. The lines were 60 metres apart at Gooderham and 40 metres apart at Cluff Lake."

"Raise mining at the Namew Lake Nickel Mine in Manitoba uses 3 m diameter bored raises driven at 45 to 50 degrees dip for stope access and drilling. These raises are developed within the orebody on 20 m centres to accommodate electric-hydraulic longhole jumbos and charging wagons. Critical elements of stope development include delineation of are contacts, control of deviation during raise development, optimal stope sequencing to permit a high extraction rate, drill anchorage installation, production drilling and blasting, and ground control. Procedures to deal with these elements are described, with emphasis on the geotechnical investigation for design of open stopes and pillars.Although mining with drilled raises does not have the flexibility to follow large variations in orebody dip, results to date indicate that it can be used successfully in the thicker ore zones. Thinner zones are currently mined using a modified Avoca method. Some flexibility to accommodate variations in orebody dip in thin are zones may be obtained by using alimack raise climbers to drive access raises, and carry longhole drills and charging equipment. Rock quality has been sufficiently good to maintain stable stope walls for full-height mining of primary stapes at 20 m strike length.IntroductionThe Namew nickel deposit is located 60 km south of Flin Flon, Manitoba. It is a moderately dipping (45 to 50 degrees) pipe-like ultramafic intrusion with a sulphide halo enrichment. The diluted recoverable ore reserves at January I, 1990 are 2.2 million tonnes grading 2.05% Ni and 0.7% Cu. The operation is a joint venture between Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting (60%) and Outokornpu Mines Ltd. of Toronto (40%). The mine is budgeted to produce 530 000 tonnes in 1990. The deposit was discovered in 1984 and mine development commenced in 1987.In the raise mining area, primary stopes will be filled with a high quality backfill consisting of cement and quarried limestone. Secondary stopes will be mined out between the primaries in the second pass of mining. The design extraction rate is 94% over all.The orebody above 120 level has an average mining width of 2.4 m, so is too narrow for raise mining. A modified form of Avoca stoping is used."

"In 1982, a study was initiated to investigate relationships between bonus and accidents in Quebec underground mines. In 1983, the study was expanded to include the impact of age and experience on accidents.The paper will describe the methodology followed in gathering information at ten mines from three mining camps in the Province of Quebec, and its transfer to data banks for subsequent treatment. Multifactorial analysis of nine variable files for the ten mines has shown: that age, experience and seniority are linked; that total working hours are tied with overtime; that bonus is linked to the main activity of the miner, and not to accidents. The most tangible factors affecting accidents seem to be the introductory training and subsequent retraining at regular intervals."

"Pilot plant testwork on autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding was conducted at the Centre des Recherches Minérales du Québec (CRM) to investigate the effect of ball addition, solids concentration in the feed, specific energy consumption and feed size distribution.A mathematical model that incorporates breakage and surface mechanisms of loss of mass was developed to predict load size distribution of autogenous and semi-autogeneous mills. An empirical model was used to predict product size distribution of autogenous and semi-autogeneous mills.IntroductionAutogenous (AG) and semi-autogenous (SAG) grinding circuits offer potential capital and operating cost savings when compared with conventional grinding. Empirical relationships have been developed to calculate specific power consumption for SAG mills using pilot plant test results (Mular et al., 1989; Barrett and Allan, 1986). Empirical models can be obtained from plant practice data but are applicable only to the particular ore and set of operating conditions used in the model. Grinding mechanisms have to be taken into account in order to develop a model that can be applied to different ores and mills.In AG and SAG, the ore itself acts as grinding media, with the finer sizes being crushed by the coarser ones. Surface mechanisms of loss of mass, in which the inner core of the particle remains intact, also take place. In SAG milling, the effect of balls also has to be taken into account. The role of each one of these mechanisms changes with particle size and the model has to account for such changes."

During the past few years, synthetic efforts have been addressed to the synthesis of polymeric materials with optical or semiconducting properties or even with capabilities to act as sensors for volatile organic compounds (1). The most recent studies have been concerned with the synthesis of heterometallic systems with short metal-metal interactions and the determination of their optical properties. These complexes are undoubtly interesting from a theoretical viewpoint and include an emerging class of luminescent materials, in which the observed luminescence results mainly from the interactions among the different metal centers, as well as the environments of these atoms. The understanding of the photophysics and photochemistry of these products could permit the design of complexes with appropriate metals and ligands chosen for individual applications. Following a synthetic strategy consisting on reactions between acid heterometal complexes and basic gold precursors we have succeded in synthesizing supramolecular assemblies formed via acid-base stacking, which display tunable luminescence or selective and reversible sensitivity to Vapour Organic Compounds (VOC?s) (2-5). In this sense, in accord with previous Mössbauer studies carried out in the gold precursor complex [AuR2]- (R = C6F5), the basic properties of this and related materials have been employed as building blocks of supramolecular assemblies in their reactions with complexes in wich the metallic centers act as lewis acids as, for instance, Tl(I) or Ag(I) (6). For instance, in the case of silver, by reacting equimolecular quantities of [NBu4][Au(C6F5)2] with AgClO4, in acetone, a solid of stoichiometry [Au2Ag2(C6F5)4(OCMe2)2]n is obtained. The polymeric nature of this material in solid state is confirmed through X-ray analyses (figure 1). It consists of polymeric chains formed by repetition of Au2Ag2 moieties linked through short gold-gold interactions. Nevertheless, in solution, the nature of this polymeric materials was still a matter of controversy and, in this case, the optical properties have been shown as useful tools in order to obtain information. Thus, while dilute acetone solutions of this complex give a emission coming from pentafluorphenyl localized ??* excited states, in accord with the presence of isolated tetranuclear Au2Ag2 units, when the measurements are done at different and higher concentrations, a band that does not obey the Lambert-Beer law appears. This deviation is consistent with molecular aggregation in solution of these units through gold-gold interactions, and a clear correlation between the emssion wavelength and the structure in the solid state and in solution is shown (figure 2). DFT calculations accord with the observed experimental behaviour and show the nature of the orbitals involved in each transition.

"Unanticipated low recovery or extraction of gold from heap leachable are can often be attributed 10 phenomena such as non-uniform percolation (channelling) of solution through heaps, excessively slow percolation rates due to densification of ore during stacking on the pads and parasitic or competing reactions of the cyanide solution with undesirable elements or geochemical ""impurities"" in the ore. The nature and causes of these phenomena are discussed in this paper, and it is suggested that geotechnical and geochemical expertise can contribute significantly to a better understanding of the relationship between laboratory results and actual field performance of the leaching process. Recommendations are made for bench-scale metallurgical testing to be complemented by geochemical and geotechnical laboratory evaluations, to ensure more successful heap leach projects. IntroductionHeap leaching is a simple, low-cost method of recovering metals from low grade ores which has now come into widespread application particularly for gold and silver metals in the United States.The heap leach process involves percolating a lixiviant (leaching agent) solution through broken or crushed ore (Chamberlain and Pojar, 1984). In the case of gold a dilute sodium cyanide solution is used and crushed ore is ""heaped"" on specially prepared impervious pads.The potential for use of heaping leaching methods for northwestern Ontario gold deposits was discussed by Beard (1983), who suggested that the use of this extraction technique in Canada should grow significantly for low grade ores as well as for small high grade deposits which cannot justify the installation of a new mill or the use of remote custom milling facilities. Two other potential situations for lise of a heap leaching extraction method are : as a low capital cost cash generator in the opening phase of a larger new project, and as a low cost output augmenter to complement a milling operation."

"The real cost of conversion from ore to semi-fabricated non-ferrous metals has been increasing for many years. Consumer resistance and improved knowledge and techniques now available justify investment in revolutionary as well as evolutionary methods of extraction. Metallurgical factors in current practice which preordain high production costs are identified as: smelters' demand for clean minerals, use of processes with low intensity of working per unit of reactor volume, use of low-velocity reactions, use of long reactor retention times relative to the speed of reactions, dilution of values in solution and commitment to electric power as a source of energy.Six new types of flowsheet are proposed for processing from ore to metal, composed of steps which are economic to construct and maintain and making maximum direct use of fossil fuel and the energy content of minerals. The basic knowledge and technology for developing these flowsheets exists. It is very tentatively suggested that these routes might reduce the capital and production cost for conversion of ore to metal by 30-50%."

"Surface coal mining production from Elk Valley and area in southeastern British Columbia began in 1913. Since 1970, five open-pit mines have been put into production: Westar Mining&apos;s Hanner and Greenhills Operations; Fording Coal&apos;s Fording River Operation; Byron Creek Collieries&apos; Coal Mountain Mine and Crows Nest Resources&apos; Line Creek Operation.ln 1983 these mines produced 14.9 million tonnes of raw coal at an average strip ratio of 4.9 bank cubic metres of waste to 1.0 tonne of raw coal. This is 70% of the estimated 21.1 M tonnes annual capacity .Multiple seams are recovered with truck/shovel and dragline equipment. There is a wide range of equipment types in use with a recent trend toward larger and more mobile equipment.Coal mining in Elk Valley involves advancing along strike in four steps: hangingwall waste removal; seam cleaning; coal recovery; and foot wall waste removal. Each mine is unique in its approach to these four steps but the truck/shovel methods can be categorized into three main groups: seam dips < 35 degrees as at Harmer, Fording and Greenhills; seam dips 35 to 50 degrees as at Line Creek; and seam dips >50 degrees as at Byron Creek. Dragline mining at Fording involves bath waste and coal removal by draglines."

"The Nemeiben Lake ultramafic complex, in the Churchill Province of the Canadian Shield in north-central Saskatchewan, is a small I. 6-km circular plug largely composed of high-alumina pyroxene cumulates forming a series of grossly concentric layers of clinopyroxenite, websterite and wehrlite. Minor dunite and gabbro are present in the northwestern part of the pluton.Disseminated primary magmatic pyrrhotite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite, magnetite and chromite occur throughout the intrusion. Sulphides occur in proportions of economic interest in the northern outcrops. A secondary assemblage of fine-grained oxides, sulphides and native metals occurs in serpentinized and uralitized peridotites and pyroxenites. Primary opaque minerals are largely altered to marcasite, violarite and hematite. The ores represent a primary magmatic assemblage extensively modified by metamorphism and, to a lesser extent, by supergene alteration.The complex intruded an Early Aphebian supracrustral succession during the waning stages of the Hudsonian orogeny. The metamorphic peak during Hudsonian time reached middle to upper amphibolite facies, granitized the country rocks and contributed to the partial amphibolitization of the ultramafic pluton.The Nemeiben complex has a number of features in common with the zoned intrusions of southeastern Alaska, including: the diopsidic composition of clinopyroxene, highly magnesian olivines, ubiquitous primary magnetite, relatively high alumina content of clinopyroxenes and the unlikelihood that associated gabbroic rocks are derived from a magma common to the ultramafic rocks. However, at Nemeiben, orthopyroxene occurs as a widespread postcumulus phase and, to a lesser extent, as a cumulus mineral. This fact, together with geochemical data on whole-rock and mineral compositions, indicates a tholeiitic parentage.The nickel-copper deposits of the Nemeiben Lake ultramafic complex are not currently economic, although standard technology for recovery of sulphide minerals in the clinopyroxenite (and websterite) would probably be adequate. Most ore minerals in the altered peridotites belong to the fine-grained secondary assemblage of opaques due to the formation of retrograde hydrous silicates and are probably too fine grained for standard recovery methods."

"The Underground Test Facility (UTF) project operated by the Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA) north of Fort McMurray has achieved marked success in field testing mining access and horizontal well in situ recovery of bitumen from the Athabasca oil sands.Mine access has provided for effective placing and operation of horizontal wells in the oil sands from a tunnel system in the underlying limestone. Performance of the in situ recovery process, Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage, has substantially exceeded forecasts made at the start of the project. Over-all results of the program to date show great promise for horizontal well in situ technology as a competitive source of bitumen from Alberta&apos;s vast oil sands deposits. The potential economics of a commercial expansion at the site are reviewed in this paper.IntroductionIn situ recovery o f bitumen from the Athabasca oil sands has puzzled the oil industry for many year s, but a breakthrough appears close at hand. The Underground Test Facility (UTF) project initiated by the Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA) has had notable success in the piloting of horizontal well processes, which offer prospects for commercial development even under the highly competitive situation facing the Canadian industry . This paper describes the project briefly and presents the potential economics of commercial development on the UTF lease."

Uranium exploration expenditure in Australia reached a record level of A$220.5 million in 2008, which has subsequently declined to A$185.2 million for the year ended 30 June 2009. Recent discoveries include: Ranger 3 Deeps east of Ranger open pit (Northern Territory), Pepegoona and Yadglin sandstone hosted deposits (South Australia), and Thunderball project (Northern Territory). Australia?s Reasonably Assured Resources recoverable at costs of <US$80/kg U at June 2009 are estimated to be 1,210,000 t U, 4% higher than the estimate for December 2008. The main additions were in the south eastern portion of the Olympic Dam orebody. The Olympic Dam Expansion is based on a large open pit and will increase output to an annual capacity of 19,000 t U3O8; 750,000 t copper; 800,000 ounces gold. The Four Mile in situ recovery project was approved in July 2009. An ion exchange facility is to be constructed at Four Mile and uranium-bearing resins will be transported to the Beverley plant to recover the uranium. Recent developments at Ranger mine, and Honeymoon, Oban and Yeelirrie projects are discussed.

"British Steel has increased its usage of stainless steel for bunker, silo and chute linings to reduce maintenance costs and improve productivity.A generation of low cost 12% Cr steels has been specifically developed to satisfy the needs of hardness, flow promotion and through life costing which are demanded by bulk solids handling industries.The range of stainless steels include:• a very hard martensitic grade which is particularly suitable for high stress applications where impact and abrasion are predominant;• a titanium stabilized duplex steel for structural applications, as well as low friction , medium abrasion resistant wear liner plate; and• a ferritic stainless steel with rubber backing for low stress application where flow promotion of product is the predominant requirement.Industrial applications and experiences along with methods of fixin g the stainless steels will be discussed in conjunction with the relative through-life costs of the products.IntroductionBritish Steel has become one of the most efficient steel manufacturers in the world, with improvements seen in productivity, quality, delivery, performance and response to the needs of the worldwide market place.Part of this success stems from reductions in engineering downtime in the key areas of its operations, by the introduction of better engineering design and the use of enhanced materials where significant cost benefits have been identified.The nature of producing iron and steel requires the use and handling of a number of raw materials with wide ranging properties, each calling for a different approach to solving the difficulties encountered in storing and transporting these materials to their respective point of use. Figure 1 shows steel production for 1988-89 where over 30 million tonnes of raw materials were handled in making 14 million tonnes of liquid steel at British Steel&apos;s five integrated works.Typically solid raw materials include, iron ore, coal, limestone, ferro alloys and scrap. Intermediate products such as coke and sinter create their own specific handling and wear problems.Coals and ores are shipped into the United Kingdom from several sources, and have a great variety of properties. Some coals can be extremely wet and sticky, whereas others are dry and dusty . The ores handled can vary from wet concentrate and fines to heavy angular rubble and pellets. These raw materials are off-loaded, stored and conveyed through British Steel&apos;s own port facilities at Port Talbot, Immingham, Redcar and Hunterston. British Steel also produces the majority of its own coke and all its own sinter. Coke and sinter are frequently handled at elevated temperatures which cause other handling problems."

"This paper is a brief overview of the role of oxygen in cyanide leaching of gold feeds (e.g. ore, concentrate). As the majority of gold occurs in the elemental state (Au °), its oxidation is of vital importance for dissolution in the cyanide lixiviant. The cyanidetion at high pH is favourable for the oxidation of Au° with a mild oxidant such as air or oxygen. Beside oxidation of gold, deleterious effects of soluble sulphides, arsenates, antimonates on cyanidation of gold can be alleviated by preaerating the leach slurry with air or oxygen (i.e. preaeration process).If gold is refractory due to its occlusion in sulphides, silicates, tellurides, etc. then gold liberation is possible by roasting in the presence of oxygen or by leaching under oxygen pressure. The data in the recent literature indicate that reactive oxygen supplied by H202, Na202, Ca02 or 03 during cyanidation can accelerate considerably gold oxidation-cyanidation and yield high gold recovery in much shorter leach time. The information compiled in this review leads to the conclusion that oxygen plays a vital role in the dissolution of gold in cyanide lixiviant."
