THE power requirements of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company at Queenstown, Tasmania, have, since the inception of smelting operations in June, 1,,896, been derived continuously from the extensive forests in the watershed of the Queen River, adjacent to -the works, the firewood being of good quality, mainly composed of myrtle or beech (Fagus Ounninghami), eucalypts, and manuka (Leptospermum ericoides).The country is very rugged and mountainous, indented by numerous ravines and gullies, and intersected by many creeks, which are subject to periodical floods, under the influence of a heavy and persistent rainfall. The areas so far exploited aggregate a total of about 42 sq. 'miles, and this denuded country gives promise of ultimately becoming very valuable pastoral ground for cattle-raising. The tonnage of wood yielded per acre varies from 40 to 100 tons on stack measurement of 80 cub. ft. per ton, 60 tons per acre being considered a good average yield. The gross amount of firewood handled during the past 13 years approximates 1,200,000 tons, the greater portion of which has been obtained by ordinary tramming methods. Since the initial discovery of phosphate rock resources in North West Queensland in 1966, significant changes in ownership and development direction have occurred. Initially development of the resource involved beneficiation to produce a more saleable grade of phosphate rock. However more recently development has focused on the production of a high analysis fertilizer product on the minesite. These changes have been influenced by economics, industry/government cooperation and a changing phosphate industry.

Mining is an activity which has, in the past, been regarded as often leaving land in a condition unfit for further use. As the need for development that is both economic and ecologically sustainable has grown, so the issue of re-use of land after mining has become significant. During operation it is usual that mine environmental conditions which minimise unnecessary or avoidable environmental impact are agreed with the regulatory authorities . These conditions are usually set down in such a way that they can be interpreted reasonably well by both miners and regulators. However, the conditions to be met by a mining company before it can be absolved of responsibility of a site are often less clear. The close-out criteria by which the success of rehabilitation programs will be judged have received little attention in the past. These conditions are now growing in importance as the costs of rehabilitation of a mine site to an agreed post-mining land use assume greater significance in the economics of mining. This paper briefly describes the status of close-out criteria presently being applied across Australia. A comparison is made with similar guidelines from other countries.

THE absence of any locality maps of the district of Morobe has been seriously felt by mining engineers engaged on the goldfields, and as it was evident at the beginning of operations that the administration would be unable to make good this deficiency, ascheme for making rapid traverses was worked out, and in all subsequent travelling the necessary records were kept for the construction of a reliable reconnaissance map of the Bulolo goldfield and its approaches (see Plate 1.). Since all the field work had tobe carried out without encroaching on primary duties, the compilation of sufficient data was a somewhat lengthy business. It was found that in this r;ough country a pedometer was useless, as it was impossible to calibrate it for the variation in length ofpace between climbing semi-precipices and walking over level country. Further, the native tracks "meander" so excessively that the only method of calculating air-line distance is by timing, and a knowledge of what the timing represents, and until a 10kg experience had been gained in the time taken to cover known distances in various types of-country, one could not feel competent to estimate sufficiently accurately. It was found that reliability could be attained only when walking at nearly top pace. Inregard to aeroplane traverses, results were reliable only when the air was fairly still.BEARINGSIn arriving at the bearing between main traverse points, the method used was to keep a "boy" about two chains- behind when marching and sight back on him, standing, at about two-chain intervals. The implementation of the Mining Further Amendment) Act, 1970, and later the Coal Mining Act, 1973, placed a requirement on the Department of Mines to accept an initiative in relation to coal exploration and coal mine development which does not apply in the case of other minerals. It is necessary to consider the exploration of the total coal resources of the State when considering exploration rather than one individual basin or deposit. If the level of knowledge of the coal resources in these basins is considered in relation to their potential for development it is possible to allocate broad scale priorities to their assessment. Saxonvale mine is a multi bench open pit coal mine developed to its Stage I capacity of 1.75 Mt/y of run of mine coal. Detailed engineering studies for the mine commenced in April 1980, approval to proceed with the development was received in July 1980 and first coal shipments were made in April 1982. The engineering and project management of the mine development was carried out by BHP Engineering. This paper outlines the design and site administration for the development and describes both the organisation structure and the control and administration procedures used by BHP Engineering to ensure that the project was Successful.

About 3km2 of the central Luise Caldera, in which the Lihir orebody is located, is geothermally active wit.lj gas seeps and fumaroles, and in some areas, a water table at boiling point.The proposed mine, adjacent to Luise Harbor, will be excavated to more than 200m below sea level and will extend into the geothermal system to depths at which current rock temperatures are 170¦C.

The processes most likely to be adopted for beneficiating ores or concentrator streams containing a large proportion of particles finer than 10 um are froth flotation, selective flocculation, wet magnetic separation and selective leaching. Flotation will be made more efficient for very fine particles if ways can be found to selectively flocculate the valuable mineral beforehand (floc-flotation), to produce smaller bubbles and to reduce entrainment of ultrafine gangue. Schemes for selective flocculation have proved difficult to implement because of the delicate balance between surface forces (electrostatic, dispersion, hydrophobic) and hydrodynamic forces, that determines flocculation, and the changes which occur to particle surfaces through hydrolysis, oxidation-reduction and cross-contamination between minerals in aqueous suspensions. The search for a better understanding of selective adsorption of flotation collectors and flocculants continues and will be particularly important for the practical success of selective flocculation and selective magnetic coating.

The nickel ores mined in New Caledonia for one century are mainly silicate ores. These ores are nickel enriched saprolites, formed by partial weathering of peridotites (predominantly harzburgites and some dunites), serpentinised to varying degrees. Saprolites constitute the lower horizon of lateritic soils, sometimes up to 100 metres thick, developed on peneplains now greatly modified by erosion. Saprolites are generally overlain by laterites, a more weathered horizon, where the main components are iron oxy-hydroxides with a low nickel grade. The structure of saprolites depends essentially on the serpentine content of peridotites and, on the other hand, serpentine minerals may have a high nickel content and, so, represent important nickel bearing minerals in silicate ores. Two types of serpentines can be found in nickel ores from New Caledonia: ò primary serpentines, formed by hydration of olivine at temperatures below 400¦C, during overthrusting of peridotites in late-Eocene (Paris, Andreieff and Coudray, 1979), are generally very abundant; ò secondary nickeliferous serpentines, associated with other sheet silicates in garnierites, are now relatively scarce but garnierites were selectively mined one century ago, because of their high nickel grade.

Prior to 1986, users of satellite based remotely sensed data were almost exclusively reliant on the United States Landsat series of satellites to monitor our Earth's resources. This situation changed when France, Belgium and Sweden launched SPOT-1 in 1986. The year of 1988 saw the Japanese also enter into the earth resource satellite business. The Japanese launched an earth resource monitoring satellite with an emphasis on marine resources, hence the name MOS-1 (Marine Observation Satellite). Many more remote sensing instruments are planned for launch by these nations and others in the next 10 years.

The Amacan Copper Project was constructed in the Philippines by a Finnish-Filipino Consortium during the years 1979 - 1982. The project involved a turnkey contract for a mine and a concentrator to process 25 000 tonne per day of porphy- ritic copper ore at a grade of 0.45% Cu. The orebody is located on Mindanao, the southernmost island of the Philippines, in rugged, mountainous terrain approximately 1 000 m above sea level. The adopted design principle was based on an efficient, straightforward installation utilising a minimum number of items of equipment each with high unit capacities. The consortium faced many problems which resulted in lengthy delays in construction and finally led to the client taking over responsibility for the completion of the project. The concentrator was successfully commissioned in July 1982.

The COREX process is a technology for production of liquid hot metal on the basis of coal (without the use of a coking plant) developing by VOEST- ALPINE AG, Austria and its subsidiary company Korf Engineering GmbH, Federal Republic of Germany. CORED is a registered trademark of VOEST-ALPINE AG and Korf Engineering GmbH. The COREXW process is based on the idea of separating the process steps realized in the blast furnace (gene- ration of reduction gas, reduction of iron oxide and melting of the reduced iron) and including partial coking of the coal.

The deformation resulting from the presence of a tunnel may signifcantly affected, nearby structures and need to be considered during design of both tunnel and structure. The aim of this paper is to study the effect of different factors which may affect the interaction between the tunnel and the str- ucture. These include; the depth of both tunnel and foundation level of the structure ( z and t ), distance between C.L. of tunnel and loads, breadth of the loaded area, Diameter of tunnel and lining of the tunnel. The problem is studied as a two dimensional plane strain model by the boundary element technique. The results of this study indicated that the presence of a cavity/tunnel increases, in general, the vertical displacement on the ground surface and at the foundation level as well as the horizontal and vertical stresses in the cavity/tunnel level. The effect of eccentricity is increasing as e/D decreasing. For pile foundation there is a quite different- influence of the presence of cavity/tunnel in both cases of friction pile and end bearing pile type of foundation.

In 2004, the Western Australian Department of Industry and ResourcesÆ Burrup Rock Art Management Committee commissioned a number of independent scientific studies to evaluate the condition of rock art in the Burrup Peninsula near Karratha (Western Australia). These studies are evaluating the physico-chemical aspects of the effect of environmental modification on the visible appearance of the rock art. Because of the cultural significance of the sites, the research approach has been to employ non-destructive testing strategies and work in the field has progressed with respect for the importance of the area. This paper only reports the spectral mineralogy monitoring at each of the sites to evaluate whether changes in mineralogy are observed on rock surfaces. Reflectance spectroscopy is a non-destructive, in situ materials characterisation technique that provides information about the mineralogy. The minerals detected include haematite, kaolinite, chlorite, goethite, gibbsite and manganese oxides. Current results indicate that the surface mineralogy of the rock art has not changed in the last four years.

Two well-developed styles of mineralization occur in the Nevados del Famatina mining district, Famatina ranges, La Rioja province, Argentina. Porphyry molybdenum- copper-gold mineralization and high level acid sulphate alteration/mineralization (Nevados del Famatina) are related to intrusion of the Pliocene Mogote rhyodacite porphyry complex. High sulphidation epithermal mineralization (La Mejicana) is developed peripheral to the Nevados del Famatina deposit. Both are hosted mainly by the Ordovician Negro Peinado metapelites.At Nevados del Famatina, five mineralized fracture events have been identified and correlated with four distinct alteration assemblages. Stage I (barren quartz) and stage II (molybdenite¦sphalerite¦pyrite) mineralization are associated with a K-silicate alteration assemblage of K-feldspar+biotite+quartz+magneti te¦ilmenite¦anhydrite. Stage III (bornite+pyrite+sphalerite+molybdenite ¦chalcopyrite¦idaite) and stage IV (chalcopyrite+pyrite +sphalerite+gold¦tennantite-tetrahedrite) mineralization are related to a quartz-sericite assemblage of quartz +phengite+illite+pyrite+rutile. Stage V mineralization is divided into two substages. Stage Va (chalcopyrite +pyrite+sphalerite¦ tennantite-tetrahedrite ¦ tellurides ¦ gold ¦enargite¦famatinite¦stibnite¦molybdenite) is related to a sericite-clay assemblage of quartz+illite+kaolinite ¦montmorillonite¦alunite. Alunite-kaolinite alteration (alunite+pyrophyllite+kaolinite+ aluminum - phosphate -sulphate minerals ¦illite¦fluorite¦corundum¦anhydrite) occurs in the upper part of Nevados del Famatina associated with the later stage Vb (quartz+famatinite +chalcopyrite+covellite + chalcocite ¦ marcasite ¦ enargite ¦ luzonite¦sphalerite¦melnikovite) mineralization.

This paper summarises the performance of the gold exploration industry in the Western World since 1970, with particular emphasis on the period 1985 - 2003. It identifies the number and size of major (ie >1 million ounce) primary gold discoveries made over this period by location and type of company. Estimates are also made of the likely contribution from smaller discoveries down to 0.1 million ounces. It also assesses the overall trend in the percentage of grassroot discoveries that are converted into mines, and the time taken to get them into production. By comparing the discovery data against total exploration expenditures it is possible to determine the average unit cost of finding a major gold deposit. It is significant to note that the average unit cost per discovery and per ounce of resource has tripled over the last 30 years. An attempt is made to determine the overall economic value generated by the industry. This is based on a detailed analysis of the rates of return and the Net Present Values (NPVs) of 109 major gold projects. After including an adjustment for discoveries not modelled, the NPVs are compared against the total amount of money spent on exploration to determine the value-to-cost ratio for the industry. Based on historical spot gold prices and tax rules, it is found that the return on investment for gold exploration in the Western World over the period 1985 - 2003 was around five per cent real after-tax. The returns achieved in the US and Australia was significantly higher than that for Canada. The returns also appear to have declined in recent years. With regard to the relative performance of junior versus major companies, the paper estimates that the junior sector accounted for 30 - 40 per cent of the total exploration expenditure, and were was associated with 34 per cent of the total number of major deposits, 27 per cent of the contained ounces and 25 per cent of the economic value found.

This study introduces a new probabilistic approach to seismic stability analysis of embankments and slopes. The approach is based on Sarma's solution, which is modified through presentation of the seismic force by its horizontal and vertical components; i.e. the force may have an arbitrary inclination. The probabilistic modelling includes Monte Carlo simulation of the shear strength parameters of the soil mass, which are assumed to have a normal distribution. The probability of failure is determined based on the seismic co-efficient, which is treated as a random quantity. The probabilistic approach is illustrated through a solution of a numerical example from an opencast coal Mine.

Mining is a high risk, high capital and potentially high reward undertaking. A large proportion of the risk comes from a lack of definition of the orebody (which also provides some of the potential) and the unpredictable nature of the market. This makes the planning process difficult but encourages the development of a robust yet flexible mining system. The system should be capable of absorbing some deviation from the anticipated concept without a significant impact on profitability. The mine planning process tends to consist of a series of related but discrete stages. For instance, the pit shells are designed, a schedule for the pit shells is created, a plant fleet is chosen to achieve the schedule and a financial analysis is carried out on that scenario. It is likely a few iterations are carried out using various mill throughputs to produce a favoured financial result. The problem is that handing results from stage æBÆ for use in æCÆ doesnÆt encourage a flexible system. æCÆ is likely to be built for exactly æBÆ. Unfortunately, in mining, æAÆ (the orebody) has the highest potential for variability and impacts everything else downstream. æDÆ the market also has high potential for unplanned variability. These variations can spread and æreverberateÆ through the whole mine process. For example an unexpected increase in ore oversize impacts all downstream mine processes to the primary crusher which may in turn create problems back æupstreamÆ by restricting throughput rate. Also an unexpected drop in demand or price could require modifications to the planned production rates. This paper looks at how mining process simulation can be used to support the development of strategies to counteract unforseen circumstances or alter production to match fluctuations in demand and price.

Secondary steelmaking (or ladle metallurgy) has been developed as a post- steelmaking ladle treatment to produce steel of superior quality. Its rapid growth has resulted from quality improvements, productivity increase, operational flexibility and process route economics. Advances in secondary steelmaking are very impressive during the past decade, and many commercial systems have been developed for performing one or more of the following unit operations: degassing, atmosphere regulation, reheating, refining with synthetic slag, rinsing gas treatment, injection of solid materials and alloying. The metallurgical requirements imposed by the current competitive steel market include more precise analysis tolerances, minimum level of detrimental elements, improved cleanness, demanding service performance and better processability. In most cases, these requirements could only be realized by the application of appropriate secondary refining facilities. Continuing developments in simplicity of design, cost advantage, quick cycle time, improvements in peripheral services such as refractories, instrumentation and in-situ analysis, extensive exploration of new applications, and the use of computer, can be expected. An exciting future is predicted for the widespread adoption of secondary steelmaking to perform most of the major refining functions over a variety of steel quality. It will also become a vital link in the total steelmaking process for production of tonnage steel at the large integrated steelworks and the mini-steelmills.
