A small-charge rock excavation method based upon the Penetrating Cone Fracture (PCF) technique has been demonstrated to be capable of excavating the hardest of rocks. The PCF technique involves drilling shallow holes in the rock which are then pressurised at the bottom by a propellant charge device. A controlled fracture is initiated at the hole bottom comer and propagates in such a manner as to excavate the rock at an energy efficiency three to five times better than explosives. Due to the low flyrock velocities and airblast pressures realised with PCF breakage, the method may be used in close proximity to equipment and personnel and is thus ideally suited for integration into continuous hard rock excavation systems. Over the past 18 months full-scale testing of the PCF method has been carried out in mines in the US and Australia. This testing has utilised a 76 mm diameter gas injector for hole pressurisation and employed propellant charges ranging from 80 to 320 gm. In addition to extensive data on rock excavation performance, data on ground motion, dust, carbon monoxide and air blast have been obtained. These data indicate that none of the parameters associated with PCF breakage are detrimental to the development of PCF-based, continuous-excavation machines. Machines employing the PCF method may range from simple single-boom machines for secondary breakage and small precision-blasting jobs to integrated systems with several booms, continuous mucking capabilities and ground-support equipment for drifting and tunnelling.

During the past five years there has been a transformation in the operating costs which apply to narrow vein mining. Mechanised methods including sublevel uphole retreat and narrow vein cut and fill are now proven. Other methods, such as vein mining by horizontal drilling from a raise platform are currently being tried in Australia.The important factors which affect the cost and appropriateness of each method include: ore continuity, the planarity of the wall contacts, relative hardness of ore and wall rocks and the dip bf the deposit.Drawing on current operating costs from a number of mines and on recent feasibility studies, a methodology for estimating the costs of narrow vein mining is presented. These costs are then placed in their economic context with regard to ore grade and mining rate.

It also aims to give where possible the reasons or circumstances that led to the achievements. SINCE writing the above-mentioned paper, some further indicator cards have been taken from the No. 1 machine, and the writers believe that a reproduction of these cards will be interesting as illustrating the performance of the machine after fifteen month steady running, night and day, seven days per week and twenty-four hours per day, at the average speed of fifty-seven revolutions per minute (see Fig. 1, page 60). For the past twelve months no adjustment have been made in the valve setting, and the only repairs have been in connection with the springs of the poppet valves, and these but slight, the springs latterly having been removed. The cards illustrated were taken with one indicator, and, therefore, are not simultaneous, andmay show to some extent the yariations of individual strokes, and with that qualification may be taken as typical of the machine's average performance.In connection with some feed-water measurements of the winding engines a rough test was run with the two compressors, the Riedler and the Corliss, coupled to the condenser, and running at fifteen and fifty-seven revolutions per minute respectively, with the result of 15.9 pounds of steam per indicated horse power per hour. This result, though only approximate, seems to indicate that the No. 1 machine is running under the guaranteed consumption, and that it is capable of maintaining this under the severe conditions of everyday practice.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a synchrotron-only technique used to determine chemical speciation, providing a powerful alternative to most traditional ‘wet chemistry’ and lab-based speciation methods. XAS is an element specific method that can be used to address a variety of systems, ranging from heterogeneous to homogeneous, polycrystalline to amorphous, and solid to liquid. The strength of XAS in identifying and managing chemical species in tailings and mine waste is demonstrated, with the presentation of highly relevant studies into lead, uranium, chromium and arsenic speciation. The mining and resources industry in general has relied on macro separation technologies (greater than 1 micron) through processes which include: ò sedimentation ò flocculation and coagulation screening and filtration ò absorption ò magnetic separation ò chemical leaching and precipitation Essentially, these processes and technologies provide the industry with an effective arsenal to handle most separation requirements to date. Dewatering of solutions is one of the most significant requirements of the resources industry, as practically all mining endeavours use water in their process for leaching, extraction, cooling, dilution or for potable drinking water.

A model of dense medium cyclones is developed based on balancing the terminal velocities of the discrete particles due to the centrifugal force against a random turbulent eddy velocity. An expression of the form P - or Q _ 1 100 e."A where P is the partition number., is a function of cyclone efficiency, particle size and density differential between the particle and medium, and is the slurry spilt, is developed and may be used for regressing plant partition data. The above model provides an understanding of peculiarities of the partition curve such as asymmetrical tails, elevation of the cutpoint and elevation of the d50 with increasingly fine feed. The effect of feed variables such as particle size, medium viscosity and changes in spigot or vortex finder diameter is shown. A means of convoluting the partition curve with various feed washabilities is discussed together with how the above may be used to evaluate plant performance for a variety of feeds.

The Tolukuma Gold Deposit is hosted by metamorphic and volcanic rocks, and igneous intrusions. Dilatant structures for the main veining appear to be provided by post-metamorphic flexure/faulting; syn-mineralisation tectonics is recognised from the en-echelon patterns of much of the veining. A SSE trending structure containing high grade mineralisation has acted as a major dilational zone within or at the contacts of porphyry intrusions. An ESE trend has controlled numerous dilational structures splaying eastward from the SSE vein structure and containing medium grade mineralisation.Early hydrothermal activity (Stage I) is represented by unmineralised, pyrite-rich brecciation and fracturing. A synergistic solvent extraction (SX) system for nickel and cobalt recovery using Versatic 10 and decyl-4-pyridinecarboxylate was tested with BHP Billiton pilot plant leach solution. Another synergistic SX system for cobalt and zinc recovery was successfully tested using Baja MiningÆs pilot plant leach solutions. Synergistic SX systems have also been developed to separate iron, zinc and copper from nickel and cobalt for Minara Resources and to separate manganese from magnesium and calcium in waste stream for HiTec Energy. The gypsum precipitation problem at the former Bulong operation could have been alleviated using a Versatic 10 and CLX50 synergistic SX system. These synergistic systems have shown high selectivity for target metals over impurity metals and would largely improve SX plant operation. Maintaining a æhealthyÆ organic is very important for efficient plant operation. Careful analysis of plant organic at CSIRO has been used as a tool to pre-empt and/or solve problems in operating circuits. Work performed to assist operators has included assessing plant organic solutions to highlight impurity build-up with time, assessing reagent stability under prescribed operating conditions, correlating organic composition with impurity transfer and crud analysis. An independent estimate has determined that work in this area by CSIRO has provided over $50 M in benefits to the industry.

"Dynamic decision-making can significantly increase the value of mining projects and deliver better sustainability outcomes under conditions of uncertainty. Despite its benefits, dynamic decision-making is rarely used by the mining industry, possibly because of the complexity of the algorithms used to make sequential decisions under uncertainty and difficulties in visualising the optimal strategies. To achieve better outcomes in practice, decision-makers in industry would benefit from a tool that would help them to understand and implement the results of the analysis.CSIRO is developing innovative dynamic decision support tools that include an intuitive graphical display of the boundaries between the regions of different optimal decisions, which would significantly assist optimal sequential decision-making under uncertainty. The dynamic decision support tool is based on novel stochastic optimal control methodologies that can be used to optimise decisions in situations with multiple uncertain variables and decisions (Tarnopolskaya, Chen and Bao, 2015; Chen et al, 2015; Langrené et al, 2015). The AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy is the focus of a world-class effort in providing technical solutions to the minerals industry. The 85 FTE staff are drawn from the CentreÆs five joint venture research partners comprising universities (Curtin, Murdoch and Qld) and government research agencies (CSIRO and WA Dept of Industry and Resources). There are also 12 industry partners, representing most of the leading mining companies in the world. Around 45 postgraduate students, mainly PhDs, make a significant contribution to the research effort. Total annual expenditure on R&D is around $17 million.Hydrometallurgy activities encompass both fundamental and applied research across the alumina, gold and base metal sectors. The Centre is now growing its client base into overseas markets, particularly North America, South Africa and Europe. Quality, strategic R&D by the Parker Centre is seen by the industry as an attractive investment. A recent survey of the industry revealed an estimated ten-fold return based on direct costs of research to the client. In addition, the Parker Centre has a strong commitment to education of postgraduate students wishing to enter the mining industry as well as providing specialist courses for those technical professionals already employed in the industry. The wide range of employment opportunities in the mining industry is reflected in the diversity of the disciplines amongst the CentreÆs research team, eg extractive metallurgy, chemistry, biotechnology, physics, engineering, molecular modelling, microscopy, geology and computational fluid dynamics. How does an atomic force microscope and molecular modelling improve our ability to control gypsum scaling or understand crystallisation of alumina in a Bayer plant? Can a biologist contribute to the problem of the slow leaching of copper from chalcopyrite? Why are computational fluid dynamics and lasers the basis of understanding how to make thickeners work more efficiently. Can you combine a PhD or Honours degree with industry experience? What is crud and why is nickel stressed? These are typical examples of the CentreÆs research activities and demonstrate the contributions of its multi-disciplinary teams which keep the Australian mining industry at the cutting edge of advanced global technology.

The critical role of representative sampling is featured and illustrated by selected examples from the geosciences and beyond. In the Mesel sediment-hosted disseminated gold deposit, the spatial distribution of hydrothermal alteration is controlled by steeply dipping faults and shallowly dipping lithologies. Hydrothermal alteration of carbonate rock is characterised by decalcification, dolomitisation and silicification. Intense argillic alteration occurs in a laccolithic andesite intrusion adjacent to decalcified and silicified carbonate units. Sulphide minerals (pyrite, realgar, orpiment, stibnite and cinnabar) accompany hydrothermal alteration and precious metal mineralisation. The trace elements Ag, As, Sb and Hg are zoned spatially throughout the deposit. Mesel contains a mineable gold reserve of 7.8 million tonnes at 7.3 g/t Au. Gold mineralisation is preferentially localised in carbonate rocks adjacent to and beneath the andesite intrusion. The ore body consists of a central, near-vertical, high grade "feeder" system flanked by tabular, inward dipping, moderate grade "ouflow" zones. Mineralisation is controlled predominantly by two steeply dipping faults with high grade (>10 g/t) gold zones centred about structural intersections and fault splays. Thank you and good morning. I am delighted to be here and to see so many of my colleagues and competitors. The general topic of this week's conference - World's Best Practice in Mining and Processing - suggests a focus on mining and processing. I am somewhat of a `jack of all trades and a master of none'. But I'm not even a jack when it comes to mining and processing technology and practices, and so I will leave those topics to speakers better 'qualified than I. Instead, what I would like to do is give you my thoughts on the best management practices of mining. You see, the times are changing for the mining business. There is great uncertainty in our industry. Anyone who received their education in an English-speaking school probably remembers the famous poem `Invictus' by William Ernest Henley. The two most famous lines from that poem are, if you remember, `I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul'. The fact of the matter is that the metals industry, including the copper industry, is not the master of its fate. To a great extent we're at the mercy of forces over which we have little control, such as the world economy or political situations in individual countries. The copper industry is like a surfer at Manly - we can't influence where the wave is going; all we can do is stay in front of the curl and on our board. Historically, discovering, developing and processing ore reserves were the primary facets of our capital intensive business. To stay competitive today, we must invest equally in intellectual capital - our employees - in order to succeed in the face of economic, regulatory and political challenges and global competition (Schonberger, 1986). Everyone seems to have a different theory about being competitive. A lot of people use sports analogies when talking about competition. Others, like American businessman and former US presidential wanna-be Ross Perot, take a more interesting approach. In Mr Perot's hypothetical corporation, competition is a lot like having a snake in a factory. If someone sees a snake, the first thing they do is create a committee on snakes. Then, the committee on snakes meets and discusses the problem for a couple of years. The most likely course of action is nothing. Everyone figures that the snake hasn't bitten anyone yet, so they just let him crawl around the factory floor. Perhaps a vice president of serpentine affairs is appointed to continue watching the snake - making sure it doesn't grow. Ross Perot sees it a little differently. In his corporate world, business needs to build an environment where the first guy who sees the snake kills it. Of course in our industry, we better make sure the snake isn't on an Endangered Species List before we go after it! I am not going to talk about competition and competitive forces in terms of sports or snakes, but I would like to share some thoughts with you about how the mining industry can better utilise competitive thinking to get ahead and stay there. Copper-gold deposits associated with iron oxide rich rocks (ironstones) form a distinctive and significant ore association which occurs widely, but not exclusively, in the Proterozoic. The ironstone association is geochemically distinct from the BIF-hosted gold association (Phillips and Groves, 1983). Not only is the former association higher in its copper and commonly uranium, FEE, ¦bismuth, molybdenum contents, but also the ironstones in many cases do not originate as chemical sediments. Although both associations form in metamorphic environs, they reflect differing tectonostratigraphic settings and with consequent differences in ore-forming fluids and ore-forming mechanisms. This paper discusses the nature and origin of the ironstone-related copper-gold association, with particular reference to the Tennant Creek district in northern Australia, and emphasises the two stage origin of mineralisation. The genetic model developed has significant implications for other ore-bearing environments.

In the past ten years or so there has been a renewed interest worldwide in the processing of refractory gold ores. The Archean province of Western Australia contains both numerous and major gold deposits, and has a long history in the development and practise of treating refractory ores (eg Blaskett and Woodcock, 1953). Depletion of shallow oxidised ores in recent years has re-focused attention on deeper sulphidic ores, and as a consequence has renewed interest in treatment methods for those ores which are refractory. Mineralogical factors he at the heart of reasons as to why these ores are refractory, and are the key to designing and improving treatment options in the longer term. This paper presents an overview of mineralogical factors that are relevant to the processing of refractory gold ores in the Archean of Western Australia. It is based on a number of research projects and other work on a variety of gold deposits, mainly in the Eastern Goldfields region, carried out over the past five years or so.

Designing coal pillars to provide resistance against overburden loads has long been an aim of rock mechanics engineers. The need for accurate pillar strength models has become.more urgent as greater overburdens are encountered and pillar sizes grow larger. Current pillar design models differ widely in their predictions of the trend in pillar strength with increasing pillar width- to-height ratio. The goal of this paper is to evaluate current pillar strength theories, using a comprehensive data base of stress measurements from coal pillars. The stress measurements indicate that coal pillars maintain relatively high stresses near the ribline, and that the stress gradient within the yield zone can be approximated as a straight line. Several problems are identified for further research, including calibration procedures for different types of stress cells, strain softening behavior in the yield zone, and measurement of stresses in the cores of very wide pillars.

The coal industry in Australia has been actively working in recent years towards the (re)integration of geostatistical techniques to the process of coal resource estimation. The benefits of using geostatistical techniques, over the current interpolation algorithms in use in coal modelling packages used to generate the grid estimates, need to be illustrated for the methodology to gain a broader acceptance in the coal industry. This paper focuses on the benefits gained at BHP Billiton Mitsubishi AllianceÆs Saraji mine for the estimation of the total product yield value at a 9.7 per cent product ash cut-off of a particular seam of the Saraji deposit. In order to perform this comparison, the results of the alternative estimation methodologies need to be benchmarked, which in most situations is achieved through the reconciliation of the estimates against production and/or process plant reconciliation data. Unfortunately, this benchmarking was not possible as no reconciliation data for the area of interest in the chosen seam was available, as it has not been mined at the time of the study. Where no reconciliation data is available, an alternative method is to use conditional simulations as the benchmark for comparison. The simulated values can be regarded as ærealityÆ, and the alternative estimation methodologies, based on a sampling of the underlying ærealityÆ, can then be compared using the simulated ærealityÆ as the benchmark for comparison.

The recent drought has highlighted the finite nature of AustraliaÆs divertible water resources. According to AustraliaÆs recently completed National Land and Water Resources Audit, development of water resources in southern Australia has reached or exceeded sustainable extraction limits. Similarly, 161 out of 538 groundwater management units are either totally allocated or already over allocated. Whilst mining only uses about three per cent of diverted water resources, water scarcity may be a major factor that determines whether potential mines can be developed in the future. Furthermore, the development of extraction and processing facilities that limit water use and maximise the re-use the waste water streams will be even more fundamental features of the mining industry in the 21st century than they are at present. There are encouraging examples where innovative water re-use technologies are significantly reducing the water used per unit of mined product. Whilst mining in the areas of Australia draining to the tropical seas may be less constrained by a current lack of water (60 per cent of divertible water resources drain into the Timor Sea, Gulf of Carpentaria and north east Coral Sea), it is highly probable that there will be increasing demand for these waters from the irrigation industry, whilst pressure will also be applied to ensure that environmental flows that benefit the coastal fishing and prawn industries are maintained. In the Great Artesian Basin, current research is demonstrating that the groundwaters are being recharged at rates considerably lower than current extraction. Whilst some other groundwater basins in arid and semi-arid Australia have currently untapped resources, these water are often relatively saline and/or may be intimately linked with key ecosystems in discharge areas. This paper presents an overview of the current state of our water resources and examines some of the key water use issues including allocation, use and reuse, environmental flows and competing demands on the resource that will ensure that water issues remain high on the policy agenda for mining, irrigation and other water users.

The recent installation of top gas temperature probes in blast furnaces at Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd. - Port Kembla, has provided the means for studying radial gas flow distribution in blast furnace shafts. This paper describes the top gas temperature probes and outlines their development and results of initial studies aimed at obtaining a suitable relationships between temperature profiles and furnace parameters. The effects of various combinations of burden materials have been outlined by the results reported. The use of probes has also helped to clarify the effect of casting cycles on furnace operation leading to increased emphasis on the reduction of the interval between gun-up and drill-out. Areas for future studies are also broadly Outlined.
