The Tooloom gold field is located within the New England Fold Belt in the far northeast of New South Wales, approximately 130 km south southwest of Brisbane. Gold was first discovered at Tooloom in 1857. Within a few years up to 10 000 people were mining placer gold deposits in the Tooloom valley and a few tried their hand at mining hard rock occurrences as well. Mining of alluvial gold continued in a small way at Tooloom until very recently, but only in the last few years, since Malachite Resources acquired its interest at Tooloom (now 100 per cent), has the full potential of this large, reduced intrusion-related gold field been appreciated. By the mid 1870s, once the alluvials were largely worked out, most of the early miners had made the 270 km trek north to the newly discovered Gympie gold field and Tooloom slipped into obscurity. Such was this obscurity that the Tooloom gold field was not recorded on published Government geological maps until 2001, four years after Malachite became involved. The many hard rock prospects that Malachite has identified in recent years were largely or completely unknown. Tooloom is a good example of blinkered thinking when it comes to modern mineral exploration. The New England province in NSW has long been the æpoor relationÆ to the much better known and more highly favoured Lachlan Fold Belt in NSW. It has also suffered serious neglect compared with the Queensland part of the New England Fold Belt that hosts such major gold deposits as Mt Morgan (>7 Moz), Gympie (>3 Moz) and Cracow (>1 Moz). Tooloom is proof that prospective geology does not stop at state borders.

Author Biography William Poole was born in Sydney, NSW in August 1868. He was educated at Sydney Grammar School. William spent two and a half years as a cadet in the Railway Construction Branch of the NSW Department of Public Works doing office and field work. He then undertook a civil engineering course at Sydney University. Following this he was employed for six years as assistant and resident engineer at the Water Conservation Branch, NSW and was in responsible charge of various field operations, surveys, river gaugings and works of constructions including a large timber weir and also a concrete weir on the Macquarie River, NSW. He then undertook a mining and metallurgical course at Sydney University and became a graduate (BE) with honours in civil engineering, mining engineering and metallurgy. He then spent four and a half years with BHP Co, one and a half years at Broken Hill in the mining and concentration works and three years at the smelting works in Port Pirie, SA, in the latter case he was metallurgist and night superintendent and during that time had responsibility and control at night of the blast furnaces and, during the last 15 months, of the whole of these large works. The author left the Port Pirie, SA works to assume the position of Director of the State School of Mines at Charters Towers and had responsible control of the establishment and also lectured in mining, surveying and structure. William Poole was honoured to hold membership in the following organisations: Assoc M Inst C E, L S of NSW, M Aus Inst M M, Assoc Inst M & M (London).

The Australian Research Council (ARC) has recently established an Industrial Transformation Research Hub in the area of iron ore, focused on iron ore characterisation, beneficiation, materials handling and end-use functionality. The research hubs are part of a new initiative aimed at building stronger relationships between industry and universities, while addressing issues of national significance. The ARC Research Hub for Advanced Technologies for Australian Iron Ore will focus its attention on developing innovative approaches for creating enhanced value across the full value chain through the characterisation of different ore types, beneficiation and materials handling and transport. This hub brings together five industrial organisations and a research team formed from well-established research groups based at the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources. These groups have a record of working closely with industry to create opportunities. Examples include new beneficiation technologies such as the Reflux Classifier for achieving gravity separation, the expertise of TUNRA Bulk Solids in materials handling and the Iron Making Centre at Newcastle, which is a capability maintained by BHP Billiton following the closure of its Technology Centre in 2009. The purpose of this paper is to provide an outline of the research hub and its objectives, some background on the research groups that now form the hub and an insight into the strategy adopted for developing and implementing new technologies. IT is generally accepted that for transport of coal underground from different collecting stations, the system of endless rope haulage with remote control is not only one of the safest and most economIcal, but is also one of the most'efficlent in dealing with output.When the coal measures lie in regular planes, the work of laying down such a haulage presents no difficulties. When, however, the dip of the measures is Irregular, or dislocated by faulting, the management is faced with the problem of constructing vertical curves of such a radius that the sag of the rope will correspond with the road bed, and thus obviate the danger of the rope rising and throwing the skips off the track.The direction of the main roads for haulage purposes being ascertained from the plan of the royalty to be worked, the faults or dislocations in the seam are determined for these roads with the greatest possible accuracy by means of bore holes from the surface.From the data thus obtained the haulage road can generally be so graded that the rope will keep on the floor during haulage operations, although the grades may in places be synclinal.The writer confesses that he knows of no accurate formula for calculating the sag of the rope under varying tensions and so determining the safe radius of the curve, and he had to depend upon past experiences under somewhat sImilar conditions.The accompanying sections illustrate a case where the writer has recently installed an endless rope underground approximately 5000 ft. in length, from the foot of a tunnel in which an endless rope delivers the output to the screening plant, and having to negotiate, first a 400-ft. downthrow fault, and later a 32 ft. upthrow.

Although laterite ores already provide a significant proportion of the world's nickel and cobalt production it is anticipated that they will surpass sulphide ores as a source of nickel in the next century. The most recent period of greenfield nickel project construction was during the 1970s when it was notable that all of the eight new plants were based on treating laterite ores. This was because of the relatively large selection of available high grade laterite ore deposits amenable to cheap open cast mining and a paucity of high grade sulphide ore prospect alternatives. Of the three processing options for treating laterite ores: 1. smelting for the lower horizon saprolite ore, 2. ammonia; and 3. acid leach for the upper horizon limonite ore, smelting currently accounts for about 80 per cent of nickel production. In the future, as saprolite ore grades decline because of relatively high exploitation rates, the incentive to process the large untapped reserves of limonite ore will increase. The high cobalt content of limonite ore also makes it ideally suited to processing by a hydrometallurgical rather than smelting route. With only two exceptions, all saprolite smelting operations have a Class 2 nickel end product (largely ferronickel) and do not produce a cobalt by-product. As a result of technological advances, the modified ammonia leach process for limonite and transition ore as undertaken at Yabulu, now allows the production of pure nickel metal as a Class 1 product, along with significant tonnages of cobalt by-product. The mixed Ni-Co sulphide intermediate product of the pressure acid leach processing of limonite ore at Mon is converted to Class 1 nickel and cobalt metal at Fort Saskatchewan, Canada.

Diamond exploration in Queensland is influenced by the South African approach modified by the discovery of diamonds in Lamproite in Western Australia. The current approach is to explore for Kimberlite and Lamproite bodies using indicator minerals dispersed by fluvial and colluvial processes. In the north-west, diamonds are derived from kimberlitic and lamproitic sources, whereas those in the coastal and subcoastal areas of eastern Queensland are associated with xenoliths included in rocks formed during Cainozoic volcanism. In these areas, sapphire is commonly associated with diamonds. In New South Wales diamonds in economic quantities occur in alkali basaltic intrusions and a subduction model has been proposed for these occurrences (Barrows et al, 1996). Exploration for diamonds in Australia increased following the discovery and exploitation of the Argyle mine. State geological surveys have produced digital information on the local occurrences of diamonds. As part of the Smart Mining Initiative (2006 - 2010), the Geological Survey of Queensland compiled a database and report on microdiamonds and diamond indicator minerals from open file company exploration data from 1968 to 2008 from the Department of Mines and EnergyÆs QDEX system. Most exploration in Queensland was conducted with exploration for other commodities. There is no commercial exploitation of diamonds in Queensland and, to date, only rare occurrences of microdiamonds. There is a regional difference in diamond occurrences with the kimberlitic and lamproitic models favoured for the north-western regions of the State and the subduction (S-type model) favoured for the eastern coastal zone linked to Cainozoic alkalic basaltic volcanism. Further diamond exploration is warranted in Cainozoic basalt provinces along the eastern coastal and near coastal regions and in the north-west of the state in conjunction with airborne geophysics flown as part of current Departmental Smart initiatives. Late-Archean banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted deposits in the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia are less well understood compared to the larger Paleoproterozoic, Superior-type BIFhosted deposits of the Hamersley Province. The Weld Range greenstone belt, in the Murchison Domain of the Yilgarn Craton, hosts two Archean, high-grade deposits, Madoonga (68 Mt resource at 57.7 wt per cent Fe) and Beebyn (62 Mt resource at 59.6 wt per cent Fe, ASX announcement 2008). Five main types of high-grade (>55 wt per cent Fe) iron mineralisation at Weld Range each display characteristic grades, tonnage, and contaminant levels, which affect exploration strategies and beneficiation methods:1. ‘Residual’ ore formed as a result of two generations of hypogene alteration of BIF. The first alteration phase replaced silica-rich bands with siderite and/or Fe-rich dolomite; the second phase involved the removal of carbonate gangue minerals and the concentration of residual Fe oxide-rich bands in the BIF via volume reduction. The product is a high-grade, high-tonnage Fe orebody, with minor contaminants.2. Magnetite-bearing shear and fault zones cut BIF along lithological contacts. These zones of secondary magnetite formed as a result of the addition of hypogene magnetite via the circulation of Fe-rich, hypogene hydrothermal fluids through BIF. This type of mineralisation produces narrow (low-tonnage), high-grade magnetite-rich ore zones with high levels of contaminants (eg SiO2, Al2O3) due to the difficulty in mining these zones.3. Specular haematite ± quartz-bearing shear and fault zones cut residual orebodies and magnetite bearing structures. They share similar characteristics to magnetite-bearing structures.4. Goethite-haematite supergene ore zones are controlled by brittle faults that cut BIF. These faults promoted the flow of supergene fluids through BIF and resulted in large ore zones with variable Fe grades and contaminants.5. Detrital deposits comprise transported BIF fragments and are intensely goethite-haematite supergene-altered. These orebodies are locally extensive, with moderate Fe grades.

Most orebodies have cross-sections of less than 1 km2 and hence do not offer a particularly large target for exploration. Fortunately, although in the geological record ore deposits are small and rare and result from the exceptional coincidence of certain geological processes, these processes are mappable on a much larger, district to regional scale and constitute a mineral system in which the ore deposit is the central feature. A mineral system can therefore be defined as `all geological factors that control the generation and preservation of mineral deposits, and stress the processes that are involved in mobilising ore components from a source, transporting and accumulating them in more concentrated fonn and then preserving them throughout the subsequent geological history'. The mineral system concept emphasises that for many ore deposit types, although economically viable mineralisation may only occur on a scale of say, hundreds of metres, the total system of fluid-rock interactions that led to ore formation can extend over a distance of tens to hundreds of kilometres around the deposit. When mapped out, the total mineral system provides a far larger exploration target than the actual ore deposit itself. Important geological factors defining the characteristics of any mineralising system include: 1. sources of the mineralising fluids and transporting ligands; 2. sources of the metals and other ore components; 3. migration pathway; 4. thermal gradient; 5. energy source; 6. a mechanical and structural focusing mechanism at the trap site; 7. chemical and/or physical traps for ore precipitation. Many of these factors individually are common throughout time and space and are mappable on a regional scale. The delineation and empirical prediction of mineral systems can thus be approached by combining two components of metallogenic research. Firstly, the development of maps of regional geoscientific data and data sets of the distribution of factors significant for mineral systems in general. Secondly, the determination of the essential ingredients of particular styles or types of deposits in terms of mappable elements that any exploration program could focus on.

The island chains of the Western Pacific (Fig. 1), on account of their related origin, and the similarity of the rocks that compose them, constitute in the main a most homogeneous mineral province. They lie in a complex "mobile" zone of the earth's crust, that formed a geosynclinal area separating the continental margins of Australia and South-Eastern Asia (the so-called Sundaland) from each other, and from the margin of the Pacific Ocean proper (FIg. 2). The whole region was drowned at the close of the Ice Age, as a result of the rise of sea-level that accompanied the melting of the great ice caps in the polar regions, leaving only the higher portions as islands and peninsulas, many of them separated only by shallow seas or "shelves."The geosyncline was infilled with Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments that have undergone varying intensities of folding and metamorphism, and has been subject to intermittent periods of volcanic activity, continuing into the present. Midway between the two continental margins there is a narrow belt of pronounced negative gravity anomalies, with an extraordinary S-shaped convolution in the vicinity of the Banda Sea and Celebes, that marks the core of this unstable region. The folding within the "mobile" zonetrends parallel to it, so that the islands in its vicinity, which are regions elevated by folding, are all elongated in the strike direction of the folds. This explains not only the linear shape of Sumatra and Java, but the arc of islands enclosing the Banda Sea, and the peculiar shape of Celebes.Parallel to the belt of negative anomalies, at a close remove from it, is the line of Recent, or active volcanoes, that extends along the whole length of Sumatra and Java...

Treatment processes are outlined for the recovery of rutile and zircon from the heavy mineral-bearing sands on the east coast of Australia. With the exhaustion of the higher grade deposits and the imposition of more rigid specifications for the finished products, strict metallurgical control has become necessary.A description is given of the methods used by The Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co. Pty. Limited to control the operation of suction dredging, of wet concentration using fans and spirals, and of dry separation using high tension and electromagnetic processes. By applying these methods a plant designed for an output of 15,000 tons of rutile per year has been tuned to produce over 20,000 tons of rutile and a corresponding amount of zircon.Details are given of (a) the method of drilling to determine the extent and grade of the ore bodies, (b) a simple electrically-timed pneumatic automatic sampler, and (c) the methods developed for the physical estimation of quartz, rutile, zircon, ilmenite and "others" in the products of plant operation.The method used for calculating the metallurgical balance and the forms used for the reporting of production results are presented.Examples are given which show the value of this detailed production and metallurgical control of plant operation.INTRODUCTIONThe organization which is now known as "The Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co. Pty. Limited" (T.A.M.Co.)-a subsidiary of National Lead Company-commenced operating at Yamba, N.S.W., in 1935. A mixed natural concentrate was at first simply dried and bagged and later was upgraded by the removal of silica and the lighter heavy minerals on shaking tables and, after air-drying, was bagged for export. At that time zircon was the most wanted constituent.

Disseminated, gold-bearing sulfide minerals hosted in sheared, wall rock metasediments and clay alteration zones comprise one of the dominant styles of Palaeozoic orogenic gold mineralisation within the Reefton Goldfield, and is exemplified by OceanaGold’s Globe Mine. This study begins the exploration and characterisation of the gold-arsenic-antimony mineralisation hosted within the dominant lithologies of the Globe-Progress shear zone. The main gold-bearing sulfides are pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite. Pyrite and arsenopyrite are not compositionally uniform across the Globe-Progress shear zone. Pyrite from the mineralised greywacke and argillite has higher As contents than pyrite in the host rock and pug breccia. Furthermore, the mineralised greywacke and argillite pyrite are enriched in As from core to rim. The 3D models based on bulk assays reveal a significant correlation in the distribution of Au, As and Sb. The interpolant for Sb envelops those for Au and As, which in turn are very similar to each other in their vertical and lateral extents across the shear zone. This result is consistent with earlier findings that the occurrence of stibnite represents a separate and likely later phase of mineralisation relative to that represented by the formation of disseminated pyrite and arsenopyrite both of which exert a stronger control on the distribution of As.CITATION:Durance, P M J, Christie, A B, McIntosh, C and Carder, M, 2015. The geology of an area in north-western New South Wales, bounded by the South Australian and Queensland borders, latitude 32° S. and longitude 14° E. is discussed.The area involved includes sixteen 1:250,000 standard military sheets and covers approximately 96,000 sq. miles.The geology of the Willyama Complex is not dealt with but a small area of metasediments previously included in this unit is separated and a possible correlation with Precambrian to the east is suggested. Torrowangee Group sediments are described and the problem of nomenclature using a glacial implication is raised.Nine areas of proven Lower Palaeozoic sediments are considered and their relationship to the boundaries of the Bancannia Trough outlined. It is possible that some exposures not yet substantiated by fossil evidence may prove to be Lower Palaeozoic rather than Precambrian in age.The sediments of the Lachlan Geosyncline in the area of the Cobar massif are described and new concepts on the age and distribution of some of the established stratigraphic units are introduced. The absence of rocks of Middle Silurian age probably indicates the time of a major orogeny in this area.Lithology, thickness, and distribution of the Upper Devonian sediments is considered and some of the more recently found fish plate localities are listed.Mesozoic sediments occur in isolated areas of Lower Jurassic age and in the Great Australian (Artesian) Basin. A four-fold subdivision of sediments of the basin has been possible in some areas but lack of sub-surface information at present, precludes the possibility of correlation with the type sections in Queensland.Units in the Cainozoic are subdivided and a five fold subdivision of the Quaternary, at present being used throughout western New South Wales, is described.

S. A. Tomich (Consulting Geologist, Perth) : I would like to commend Mr. Haycraft on his presentation on the economic geology of the North End of Kalgoorlie. This is an intriguing area which is in the Kalgoorlie field but not of it, inasmuch as it is separated spatially from the main Golden Mile by the Golden Pike Fault. Mr. Haycraft has stressed the differences-the mineralogical and structural differences of economic significance between the two areas.I would like to ask whether he is satisfied that the lithological sequence in the North End is the duplicate of that in the main Golden Mile area irrespective of the postulated effects of erosion, and more specifically whether there is any chance that the quartz-dolerite-greenstone of the North End may be in any way dissimilar from the quartz-dolerite-greenstoneof the Golden Mile which is tellurude bearing.J. A. Haycraft: In relating the quartz-dolerite in the Hannan's North-Mount Charlotte area back to the Golden Mile, we find some quite close similarities. Although the rocks are similar they are not necessarily one and the same.At Mount Charlotte we have three varieties of dolerite- a coarse-grained gabbroic dolerite on the eastern side of the orebody, the host rock medium grained and on the western side, a fine grained dolerite. Further west we have an amphibolitic variety of quartz dolerite.Recent drilling south of the Golden Pike fault on the Enterprise No. 20 level had indicated a remarkably similar sequence of rocks. We drilled west through a wide section of medium grained rocks into a fine grained rock and then into amphibolitic quartz dolerite before intersecting the Golden Pike fault. The placement of sulfidic waste below the groundwater table ensures limited interaction with the hydrosphere and suppression of sulfide oxidation. However, if sulfidic waste is placed above the groundwater table and remains uncovered, the backfill becomes part of the unsaturated zone and is exposed to atmospheric oxygen and leaching. This study aims to establish the leaching behaviour of sulfidic waste placed above the groundwater table and the impact of such leachate on the local aquifer at the Thalanga base metal mine. Mining of the Thalanga copper-lead-zinc deposit resulted in a large final mining void (600 m + 150 m + 70 m) and extensive underground workings. The underground workings were partly filled with tailings and the open pit was partly backfilled with acid producing sulfidic waste rock. In addition, the pit serves as a sink for acidic run-off from adjacent waste rock piles and mine workings. To date, the backfill of sulfidic waste rock placed into the pit has not been capped with benign materials and for most of the dry season, the surface of the backfill is covered by melanterite-type efflorescences. Results of kinetic column leach experiments conducted on the sulfidic waste indicate that Cd, Cu, Zn and SO4 rich waters migrate from the backfilled sulfidic waste into the local unconfined aquifer. However, the seepage of alkaline (pH 7.3 - 8.0), high conductivity (>10 000 ¦S/cm) tailings waters into the remaining pit void clearly shows that the acid leachate originating from the sulfidic waste rock does not impact beyond the waste repository and its immediate environment. Geochemical modelling implies that minimal or no mixing occurs between the acid waste rock leachate and the alkaline tailings waters.

"The most commonly used method of thick coal seam extraction in Polish deep mines is multislice longwall (MSL). In MSL stability of goaf in the roof as a result of previous extraction in upper slice is a major geotechnical consideration that must be managed.This paper outlines the results of a wide range of investigations carried out in three longwalls that were in operation in a multislice system using caving with additional fly ash goaf stowing. The longwalls were operated by Katowicki Holding Weglowy SA (KHWSA) in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin of Poland.Examinations were completed on the properties of goaf at the roof of longwalls ie measurements of strength parameters of the goaf material by means of a borehole hydraulic penetrometer, determination of the goaf condition by means of a borehole endoscope and laboratory testing of the caved rock. Conventional models, based on pulp kinetics, were regressed directly to steady-state data from a nine-stage platinum flotation plant, to provide a basis for optimisation studies. æFroth factorsÆ were used to characterise the froth in each stage and a ædepressant factorÆ was used for gangue minerals, to account for addition of depressant to the cleaners. These factors improved the fit, but differences between plant and model of up to 50 per cent were still present in a number of streams in the cleaning circuit. A new model was developed, which incorporated two rate constants for the recycle of particles from the froth. These parameters provided a workable approximation of the distribution of probabilities of particles being recycled in plant cells, depending upon where particles appeared at the surface. The feed streams were characterised by two pulp kinetic parameters and the above recycle parameters, for all minerals and all stages. The fit to the data was improved very significantly, when compared to the use of conventional pulp-based models with several pulp rate parameters. This relatively simple model did not require additional data from batch tests and it was suitable for plant simulations.Simulations of various strategies for plant operation were tested, allowing the simulator to vary the concentrate flows from all or some of the stages, in order to maximise platinum recovery. The simulator was imbedded in an automatic optimiser and constraints on chrome content or mass flow of final concentrate were used. The simulations of the existing circuits demonstrated that an improvement in recovery, (for a constant concentrate mass) of about 0.5 per cent was possible, by optimising all concentrate flows. A significant reduction in the flow of scavenger concentrate and an increase in the recycle flows in the cleaners were noted. The results of simulations of various changes to the circuit configuration are also discussed. An increase in recovery of 1.4 per cent (for constant concentrate mass) has been achieved in recent simulations, through circuit changes. However, it was necessary to keep the mass pull of concentrate, per unit area, within typical limits.

A testwork program aimed to improve the assaying of underground face samples established that for an Accelerated Cyanidation Extraction using the LeachWELLTM 60X catalyst, followed by an Aqua Regia finish (to quantify non-cyanide-extractable gold): ò Assay results (including the aqua regia finish) from a full set of samples from one underground face can be returned within four hours. ò The reagent dose to make the method simple and 'bullet-proof' is 8 gm LeachWELLTM 60X and 20 gm NaCN per 200 gm sample (30 per cent solids). Pulverising is to 90 per cent passing 75 micron (compared to the standard of 90 per cent passing 150 micron), and cyanidation is completed within one hour - however both might be further optimised. ò The LeachWELLTM/Aqua Regia results demonstrate that Fire Assays suffer from a significant nugget effect which makes the Fire Assay data relatively unreliable. ò Original costs, specific to Bannockburn (viz including an Aqua Regia finish), handling approximately 20 000 to 25 000 per annum is estimated to be $5.40, ie about one-third less than fire assaying. Optimising is further reducing these costs. It is estimated that the LeachWELLT"'/Aqua Regia assay procedure has reduced the probable error limits of any given assay of this ore from the range 0.74x to 1.36x for Fire Assay, to an appreciably smaller range of 0.90x to 1.11x. Thus for a cut-off grade of 1.60 g Au/t, samples with Fire Assays ranging up to 2.18 g Au/t have 25 per cent chance of being below cut-off, while samples with Fire Assays as low as 1.18 g Au/t have an equal chance of actually exceeding cut-off grade. This 1 g Au/t range in uncertainty is generally unacceptable for many practicalgrade/tonnage relationships. By contrast, using LeachWELLTM + Aqua Regia assays, the estimated corresponding limits are 1.44 g Au/t and 1.78 g Auk respectively - a far more tolerable 0.34 g Au/t range of uncertainty. Subsequent data has demonstrated that sufficient accuracy for grade control is achieved by Accelerated Cyanidation alone, further halving the cost of assays.

The mining industry often needs to operate in remote or climatically harsh locations. The industry has recently been forced to deal with extreme conditions including floods, heatwaves and droughts. As these are becoming progressively frequent occurrences, mines typically build ‘downtime’ into production schedules and expect to incur costs to manage the various risks arising from climate extremes. Importantly, many environmental conditions are becoming more extreme and consequently, risk management based on past data can become increasingly ineffective. Market and shareholder demand for fewer interruptions are another pressure on mines to avoid prolonged or frequent downtime. Hence, adaptation to climate is becoming an important strategic move for many companies, many of whom are using future climate scenarios and alternative risk evaluations.We present here a method that uses commonly available mine site data to assist decision-making for reducing vulnerability to sudden flood. The method, ‘climate-related adaptation from terrain evaluation results’ (CRATER), identifies a mine’s flood ‘hot-spots’ and presents them as a ‘traffic lights’ warning map. The process then requires a failure analysis process such as fault-tree analysis to identify both the cause of possible failures and a range of possible failure-avoidance adaptations. In the final stage, management can assess the most suitable option for the mine, based on the availability of capital such as time, facilities, labour and money in addition to social acceptability of the options. CRATER has been tested in an open cut mine environment and is now being further developed to identify how subsidence over underground mines may impact on flooding and ponding over the mining life cycle (CRATER II). Many hydrometallurgical and chemical processes produce large amounts of acid waste. This is illustrated by the copper S/X-E/W process used at the Mount Gordon mine in North Queensland, which produces a tank house bleed in the form of a concentrated sulphuric acid stream. The bleed stream is necessary to remove impurities such as iron that decrease the efficiency of the electrowinning process. However, this bleed stream comes at a high financial cost due to large quantities of make up sulphuric acid required as well as the need to neutralise the bleed stream prior to disposal. The present work describes the approach taken to develop a solvent extraction process for the selective recovery of sulphuric acid from copper tank house bleed liquor. The proposed extraction system was investigated using a branched long chain aliphatic tertiary amine tris(2-ethylhexyl)amine (TEHA) as the extractant, Shellsol 2046 as the diluent and octanol as a modifier. Computer simulations were used to determine the optimum operating conditions for the recovery process. It was found that the process was able to selectively recover up to 90 per cent of the sulphuric acid from the copper electrolyte. This is recovered as a pure aqueous acid stream at a concentration of up to 130 g/L that can be recycled back into the tank house circuit or other areas of the process. The raffinate acid concentration was reduced from 180 g/L to as low as 18 g/L, significantly reducing waste disposal and the environmental impact of the copper process. The equilibrium data and simulation results were also compared with an alternative extractant, CYANEXR 923. Finally the efficiency of the TEHA extraction system was investigated on a pilot-scale in a pulsed perforated plate column. This information was used in order to scale the process for an industrial application. The same methodology applied in this case study could be used to provide innovative and cost-effective solutions to waste streams encountered in other hydrometallurgical or chemical processes.

The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston Open Pit is mining through a dense network of disused level workings and open stopes of greatly varying sizes. The condition of the stope crowns and remnants is often unknown, and ultimately these structures become a significant proportion of the production floor and pit walls. Significant seismic events and occasionally rock bursts often occur in the underground workings. Seismicity is becoming an issue to the viability of the KCGM Fimiston operations. KCGM needs to take a leading role in understanding mine-induced and regional seismicity. The seismic system trials were initiated in the Fimiston Open Pit in 1996 using the ISS system. The initial system included two triaxial geophone arrays and two triaxial accelerometer arrays installed into two boreholes. The main objectives of the trial were to investigate the suitability of the two types of sensors and the detectability of seismicity in the pit. The trial was regarded as a success and the system has been expanded and improved. The current system consists of 12 triaxial geophone and accelerometer arrays and nine uniaxial geophones. The 12 triaxial arrays are installed in nine boreholes drilled from the pit and the nine uniaxial geophones are installed from underground level workings about 660 m below the original surface elevation. The system is designed to provide seismicity coverage for the entire pit area that is about 2.7 kilometres long, 1.5 kilometres wide and about 300 metres deep. The accuracy of the source location has always been a challenge due to the existence of the dense concentration of stopes and lack of the sensors. It is uncommon to have direct ray path for the seismic waves to propagate to the sensors across the strike, hence sensors have been located along strike and under the old workings. This paper discusses some of the challenges associated with seismic monitoring near mine remnants and seismically active faults. The results of the seismic monitoring are presented, and contrasted to results of three dimensional boundary element numerical modelling. The impact of the seismicity upon pit slope stability is briefly discussed.
