A significant resource of uranium has been discovered within a buried palaeochannel located in the south western corner of the Officer Basin of Western Australia by PNC Exploration (Australia) Pty. Ltd. The mineral- isation is redox controlled and is hosted by Eocene organic rich paludal sediments. Prob- able insitu reserves are 13,000 t of contained uranium with an average ore grade of 0.12% at a cutoff grade of 0.03% U. The Mulga Rock palaeochannel has been traced for at least 100 km beneath the Quaternary surficial cover. The main channel is horseshoe shaped with the channel arms vary- ing from 5 to 15 km in width. The western arm connects to the Lake Raeside-Ponton Creek drainage system, whilst the eastern arm'is open to the south. The headwaters of the palaeo- channel are thought to have been the Lake Minigwal drainage system, prior to its capture by the Lake Rason system. Differential.erosion of the basement rocks during the Late Cretac- eous to Early Tertiary strongly influenced channel shape and resulted in the main channel being confined to a Permian,mudstone filled valley. Upwards of 100 m of fluviatile sediments accumulated within the palaeovalley during a period of subsidence in the Early Tertiary. Three broad stratigraphic units have been re- cognised within the channel: 1. An upper unit of fluviatile sands with interbedded lacustrine sediments, which have subsequently been wholly oxidised and variably silicified and ferruginised. 2. A middle unit of lacustrine to paludal sediments, which host the main mineral- isation. 3. A basal unit of fluviatile gravels and sand. The presence of excellently preserved Nothofagidites in organic rich paludal sediments from the middle unit, suggest that unit was laid down in a non-marine, fluviatile, humid environ- ment during the Middle Eocene.

Climate change and global warming present a significant challenge as unsustainable levels of greenhouse gas emissions arising from human activities continue to be emitted. The cement industry is responsible for between five and ten per cent of annual world carbon dioxide emissions; most arising from the manufacture of Portland cement (PC). An effective way of reducing emissions is by incorporating supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as partial PC replacements. SCMs are silicate or aluminosilicate based pozzolanic materials which, in finely divided form, combine with water and calcium hydroxide (lime), liberated by cement hydration, to form compounds exhibiting cementitious properties. Pitchstone is such an aluminosilicate and has the potential to act as an effective pozzolan for partial replacement of PC. In North Queensland, Australia, a vast deposit of pitchstone is mined and processed for expandable perlite aggregate. During the classification stage of the excavated natural material, waste pitchstone fines (PF) less than 0.5 mm in size are generated. This study evaluates the waste PF as a viable, eco-friendly pozzolan for the partial replacement of PC. The reactivity of the PF is compared to fly ash (FA), using the pozzolanic compressive strength activity index (SAI) after seven, 28, and 91 days ageing at 20 per cent and 40 per cent PC substitutions. PF was found to be comparable to FA as a pozzolan at 20 per cent PC substitution at all ages tested. However, for the 40 per cent substitution blends significant strength was only achieved at 91 days ageing for the FA blend. The pozzolanic reactivity was also investigated using thermogravimetric analysis to determine the degree of free lime present after 91 days. In all cases where an SCM was added, the free lime was observed to be consumed with increasing age.

Ion exchange using strong base resins is a well established technology for the recovery and purification of uranium from sulfuric acid leach liquors. Production of uranium at the Beverley Mine in South Australia includes acidic in situ leaching, ion exchange and uranium precipitation. The salinity present in the groundwater results in a relatively high concentration of chloride in the leach liquor reporting to the ion exchange plant. The impact of chloride on the ion exchange process is discussed in this paper. The results presented show that an increased chloride concentration in the lixiviant solution feeding the ion exchange plant leads to increased uptake of chloride by the resin during the loading cycle. At the highest chloride concentration studied (7.5 g/L Cl) chloride took up to 60 per cent of the resin loading sites. The impact of the chloride can be summarised as follows: for a given uranium concentration in the lixiviant feed solution, the uranium loading decreased with increasing chloride concentration; a consequence of decreased uranium loading is an increase in the frequency of elution, with an associated increase in elution reagent costs; and for a given elution efficiency, the uranium concentration in the barrens is expected to increase with increasing chloride concentration.A few options were examined to counteract the impact of chloride: an increase in elution efficiency was targeted to reduce the amount of uranium returning to the loading circuit; increasing the pH improved uranium loading, but this was found to also increase iron extraction; and preliminary screening of alternative resins showed that the higher the theoretical ion exchange capacity of the strong base resin, the higher the uranium loading.Work is continuing on uranium recovery from saline leach liquors, specifically investigating the performance of alternative resins.

The Coeur d'Alene mining district in northern Idaho, USA is the second largest producer of silver in the world. Mesothermal silver-lead-zinc veins occur in the metasedimentary rocks of the Belt Supergroup with five main types of associated hydrothermal alteration: 1) feldspar destruction, 2) hydrothermal bleaching, 3) carbonatisation, 4) sulfidation, and 5) silicification. Hydrothermal bleaching is characterised by hematite destruction with associated siderite and quartz veins and veinlets, coarse euhedral pyrite and magnetite. Bleached zones envelop both mineralised and barren veins and extend for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Carbonatisation consists of addition of siderite, which occurs as veins, veinlets, stockwork, irregular blebs or spots, and coarsely disseminated grains, depending on the relative distance from the main vein structure. Siderite envelops nearly all mineralised veins, relates to all other alteration types and extends from several metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Pyrite and galena alteration dominate sulfidation and are associated with some mineralised veins. Pyrite alteration strongly correlates with siderite alteration and exists in three main forms: a) very fine-grained pyrite flooding, which can extend for metres to tens of metres into wall rocks; b) coarse-grained, euhedral pyrite, which is sporadic and associated with the redox boundary in hydrothermally bleached zones; and c) small isolated zones (6 - 15 cm) of medium-grained, subhedral to euhedral pyrite associated with pervasive siderite alteration. Where present, disseminated galena extends for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Silicification is characterised by veins, veinlets, stringers, irregular patches and variable hardness in siltites and commonly appears in association with hydrothermal bleaching and siderite alteration. Although related to mineralisation, silicification is sporadic and in most places a clear envelope around mineralised veins cannot be identified.

The smelting of concentrates and secondary materials has been subject to increasing challenges in recent years due to declining grades of feed materials, increasing impurity levels and ever more stringent environmental regulations. In addition there has been a growing focus on maximising the efficiency of energy usage and recovery of values. New opportunities have been created with rising metals prices and improved systems for the collection of secondary materials, giving rise to a need for more flexible process solutions.This paper focuses on a number of specific cases where a process solution has been developed using the Outotec« Ausmelt Process to meet particular feed material challenges and overcome limitations inherent when employing traditional pyrometallurgical processes.The first case involves the development and commercial implementation of a smelting process to recover values from zinc smelting residues typically deposited into dams as a waste product. The second case describes the application of the Ausmelt process for the smelting and converting of secondary copper feed materials, including e-waste. These materials contain a wide range of metals and plastics and need to be processed appropriately to maximise the recovery of values whilst avoiding environmental problems. The third case study covers the smelting of nickel concentrates containing elevated magnesia levels as well as nickel bearing catalysts with high alumina content, neither of which can be readily processed when employing traditional pyrometallurgical technologies. Alcoa World Alumina AustraliaÆs Huntly and Willowdale bauxite mines are located in the Darling Range of South Western Australia, which places their operations within PerthÆs surface water supply catchments. These catchments supply Perth with its highest quality drinking water. With the decreasing rainfall trend of recent years catchment yields to water supply reservoirs have reduced to such an extent that water use restrictions were necessary in Perth for 2001, 2002 and 2003. Protection of catchment water quality and water use conservation are crucial issues for AlcoaÆs operations within the Darling Range. Alcoa has been conducting bauxite mining activities in water supply catchments since the mid-1960s. During that time Alcoa has worked closely with the relevant State Government water and environmental agencies to ensure that its operations do not adversely impact catchment water yield and water quality. Monitoring and research have shown that Alcoa has the necessary environmental management systems in place to ensure it can continue to operate in a sustainable manner within water supply catchments. AlcoaÆs mines reduced the volume of water taken from public water supply catchments by 24 per cent in 2002, compared with 2000. This success has had an added benefit; Alcoa does not need to develop a new water source for its Huntly Mine. The conservation measures implemented to reduce water use include: increasing water recycling, using chemical additives for haul road dust suppression, conducting water audits, reducing water demand, monitoring water use, promoting water use targets and training staff in water conservation.

During the course of an investigation into the fundamental chemistry of the cyanide process, it became evident that the usual method of determining protective alkalinity was not completely satisfactory. T.he routine method for the determination of protective alkali by first removing free cyanide by the addition of silver nitrate, followed by titration of alkali with dilute acid using. phenolphthalein as indicator, can be shown to give correct results only when the alkali is a strong base. For other sUbstances, the alkali so determined is not the protective alkali. In view of the complications associated with the presence of zinc in cyanide solutions the discussion will be restricted in the first place to solutions free from zinc. Until the chemistry of simple cyanide solutions is placed on a quantitative basis it will be difficult to elucidate the behaviour of complex mill solutions.By the use of physico-chemical theory, it is possible to treat certain aspects of 'the chemistry of cyanide solutions in a manner which not only illustrates the important variables involved, but which also shows the need for care in interpretIng results obtained by conventional methods.In the following, comparatively simple systems are discussed; the principles established should be of use in interpreting the behaviour of more complex solutions. The methods described are not intended for routine work, but may be regarded as supplementary to the usual analysis carried out for the control of plant solutions, or as alternatives to be used when the latter do not appear to be satisfactory.

The paper briefly summarises the work of the Titanium Research Section in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne and mentions the development of a new electrolytic process for titanium production. This process utilises the "hot-spot" cathode technique and titanium carbide anodes. An introduction is given to three further papers on titanium metallurgy to be presented to the Institute.INTRODUCTIONThe unique combination of strength, lightness and corrosion resistance possessed :by titanium and its, alloy has made them of great interest to engineers. However, high cost, difficulties of production and limited knowledge of techniques of application restrict their usage at present almost exclusively to high priority armaments.The cost of the metal is divided between extraction and processing and much research has been carried out to devise new and cheaper methods for winning the metal from its ores. Processing costs will be reduced when production volume increases.Extraction research is proceeding rapidly overseas and Kellogg (1955, p. 72) reports that 'at least seventeen companies in the U.S.A. are interested in titanium production. Of these, two are producing the metal by a modified Kroll process, three are building Kroll plants and the remainder are in various stages of research activity. The Horizons Corporation alone is contemplating electrolytic extraction and is building a pilot plant. Steinberg et aI. (1955, p. 252, p. 332) have reported the early work done by the HorizonsCorporation on electrolysis of potassium fluotitanate and titanium monoxide in fused salt electrolytes. Of these two, the former appears to be the more attractive process.

Until recently, nickel laterite projects have been largely ignored, due to their supposedly higher treatment costs compared with sulphides, and to their perceived processing difficulties. A number of laterite projects in the 1970s were abandoned because of high capital and operating costs, while others experienced severe technical difficulties. Conventional wisdom had it that laterites would not be exploited until most of the sulphide orebodies had been depleted. Why then, have Australian mining and exploration companies started a resurgence of interest in the treatment of nickel laterites? It all began with the Bulong project, which has been under study since 1987, while more recently two further projects, Murrin Murrin and Cawse, have been initiated and are being fast-tracked to take advantage of the current high nickel and cobalt prices. A further project in NSW, Syerston, has also been investigated at bench-scale, but no further development has yet been announced. All these projects have the following advantages: 1. Good location near a major mining centre and,reasonably close to power, water, roads, accommodation and a developed service industry. 2. Straightforward, low cost mining. 3. Low cost of acid or sulphur. 4. Good to very good cobalt credits. In addition, there have been significant technological developments in the design and operation of high pressure autoclaves and high rate thickeners, as well as solvent extraction and electrowinning technology. This has helped to decrease capital costs and technical risks, and has allowed the development of alternative flowsheets to the existing laterite operations (Taylor, 1996).

The price of oil and other minerals may not make the costly business of offshore exploration seem -attractive at present. There is little doubt that the future search for the strategic resources will tend towards deeper waters particularly on the continental slope margins. In addition with the realisation that active tectonic environments (eg the Makassar Straits) cannot be excluded as potential hydrocarbon sources there is an increasing demand by the explorationists for deep water survey capability. Such deep water research has until recently been restricted to a few specialised academic institutions ;however with the anticipated extra, demand from other institutions, companies, and government agencies, Marconi Underwater Systems Limited (MUSL)and the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences in the UK have come together to allow MUSL to provide the deep water mapping system GLORIA on a commercial basis -for the first time. The GLORIA package comprises a deep water(more than 400m) side scan sonar system which, by operating at a frequency around 6.4 kHz can insonify swathes on the seafloor up to 60 km wide. In addition, single channel seismic, 3.5 kHz high resolution profiles, precision echo sounding, magnetic and gravimetric data all combine to provide as complete a regional interpretation as possible. The GLORIA system combines surveying at a reconnaissance level, covering as it does up to 20,000 sq.km per day, with a very high reliability, so that even in- economically unfavourable times, it can-still be considered as an invaluable and cost effective primary exploration tool. Analysis of the GLORIA data enables the identification of areas of particular interest requiring more detailed study by the more costly multi-channel seismics at a later date.

The carbothermic chlorination of titaniferous materials such as rutile, synthetic rutile (SR), upgraded slag and ilmenite in a fluidised bed is an established commercial process. In this work, ilmenite sourced from the Murray Basin area of South Eastern Australia was chlorinated and an assessment of the chlorination characteristics of the ilmenite, in terms of pre-treatment, type of reductant and reaction time was made. Selective chlorination of Murray Basin ilmenite to remove Fe and Mn was achieved in this work. A synthetic rutile sample containing around 93 per cent TiO2, one per cent Fe2O3 and 0.5 per cent MgO was produced at a chlorination temperature of 1000¦C with around 25 per cent loss of Ti as TiCl4. Raising the reductant to ilmenite ratio in the chlorination reactions increased the amount of Ti chlorinated. However, complete chlorination of Murray Basin ilmenite to produce FeCl3 and TiCl4, was not achieved under the conditions used in this work. Pre-oxidation of Murray Basin ilmenite before chlorination had little affect on its reactivity, compared with æas receivedÆ ilmenite. In contrast weathered West Coast ilmenite chlorinated appreciably better than West Coast primary ilmenite, in terms of bed residues remaining and amounts of elements removed. The presence of large amounts of Mg and chrome spinel grains in the Murray Basin ilmenite used in this study are likely to make it difficult to chlorinate directly in a commercial chlorinator. However, this is not to say these ilmenites will be unsuitable for chlorination applications. Further work is needed in the separation of Mg and chrome spinel grains from Murray Basin ilmenites and the products resulting from these tests could then be assessed in terms of chlorination performance, so that further processing options can be explored.

Many narrow-vein gold deposits are characterised by a high to extreme nugget effect and the presence of coarse gold. They rank amongst the most difficult of deposits to produce an accurate and precise resource estimate. This contribution presents a case study from the Nalunaq Gold Mine in Southern Greenland. The mine commenced operation in May 2004 and is currently operating at a rate of 400 tonnes per day, to produce about 100 000 oz gold per annum from a total resource base of 1.2 Moz. Mineralisation is characterised by quartz veins that are hosted within a shear zone that is continuous over about 1000 m. The principal orebody is the Main Vein structure, which ranges up to 3 m in width, maintains an average dip of 35¦SE, and contains significant gold grades (1000s g/t Au). Gold particles are often visible, with 25 per cent being greater than 250 microns in size. Variography using underground development samples indicates a nugget effect of about 75 per cent. For the 2005 resource estimate, a 2D metal accumulation ordinary kriged block model was used to produce a global grade for the Target and South Blocks of the Main Vein. Grade control chip-channel samples are collected from æshantyÆ drive footwalls, and used as the basis for both the kriged block model and to determine the grade of individual stope blocks by peripheral weighted averages. Geology plays a key role in mining efficiency, given the locally variable nature of the ore zone.

For certain applications, steels have to feature a very distinct and well-defined level of cleanness in terms of the number and composition of non-metallic inclusions. Therefore, one crucial aspect of steelmaking is removing and controlling said non-metallic inclusions during the process. Particle removal during ladle refining comprises three stages, namely: 1. Flotation 2. Transport through the steel/slag interface 3. Dissolution of the particle in the slag. Only if all three stages are completed the particle can be considered as fully removed from the steel melt which, in turn, leads to the slag being one of the most influential parameters for inclusion removal and control. Depending on the composition of the particles and the slag, the dissolution can be controlled by different mechanisms. This study focuses on the diffusion-controlled dissolution of solid oxidic particles in slags. For this, a model of particle dissolution has been developed. For modelling diffusion, either the differential equation following Fick’s second law can be solved, or an analytical solution to this equation valid for stationary interfaces can be used. Both approaches allow for calculations of concentration profiles of the dissolving species in surrounding slag. From this, the mass flux can be derived, which finally leads to calculating the boundary layer velocity due to considerations of mass balance. In this work, both methods as well as results of dissolution experiments using High Temperature Confocal Scanning Laser Microscopy are compared. This research aims to provide a framework for diffusion-based dissolution modelling in further expanding the understanding of particle dissolution in secondary metallurgy.

The leaching behaviour of BHAS copper matte in oxygenated acidic sulphate chloride solutions at 85¦C has been studied using samples containing 34% copper, 41% lead and 12% sulphur. Copper sulphide in the matte, essentially Cu2S was found to leach in two distinct stages. Similar to the behaviour of pure chalcocite, copper dissolution in the first stage was affected by the availability of oxygen in solution. The presence of chloride ions in the leachant was essential if there was to be any leaching in the second stage (which usually commenced after about 40% of the copper had been taken into solution). Lead sulphide in the matte was oxidised to lead sulphate and formed a shell around the partially leached matte particles. Electrochemical studies showed that this lead sulphate and/or sulphur produced during leaching can form a passivating layer around the copper sulphide. However, this layer was disrupted when chloride ions were present. A Plackett-Burman analysis was used to determine the species in the recycled leach solution that affect the leaching of copper. Under the experimental conditions used, in the first stage the rate of copper dissolution was influenced by the concentrations of sulphuric acid, Zn(II), Cu(II), Fe(III) and Cd(II). In the second stage, the rate was futher modified by the concentrations of Cl(I) and As(V) ions. In solutions of low acidity and high As(V) concentration, insoluble copper arsenate formed which coated the partially leached matte particles and acted as a barrier to futher reaction.

Models of the evolution of the hydrothermal systems that form porphyry Cu (Mo-Au) deposits are compromised because aqueous magma-derived fluids in the ore zones of most deposits have changed from their original magmatic compositions as a result of cooling, depressurising, mineral precipitation, brine-vapour unmixing and fluid-rock reactions. However, in deep quartz-rich, sulfide-poor veins from numerous porphyry type deposits, we have identified parental fluids trapped in inclusions at near magmatic temperatures and pressures above the brine-vapour unmixing solvus. We have analysed these inclusions for bulk salinity, density, solute chemistry, helium isotopic ratios and elemental composition. These parental inclusions contain 35 - 70 volume per cent bubble, are low to moderate salinity, contain up to ten mol per cent CO2, and commonly contain a chalcopyrite daughter crystal. Our results indicate that these Cu-rich fluids transport Cu from a plutonic complex below upward into a hydrothermal system, where decompression, cooling, unmixing and water-rock reaction drive ore-mineral precipitation. Na/Cl ratios greater than one indicate that in addition to chlorine, sulfur and/or carbonate must play a key role in Cu transportation. Helium isotope ratios indicate that between ~15 and 100 per cent of helium in these fluids is mantle-derived. We suggest that in addition to He, volatiles from mafic magmas in the mantle are also likely to supply CO2, Cu and S to the fluids that form porphyry copper deposits. "The Coal Seam Gas (CSG) industry has seen a rapid increase in activity over a 30-year periodfrom the early 1990s within Australia. Despite public concerns over environmental issues, theCSG industry has increased in Queensland to the point where more than 90 per cent of naturalgas consumed in Queensland is CSG. The New South Wales (NSW) CSG industry has been slowerto respond for many reasons. Ninety-five per cent of natural gas consumed in NSW comes frominterstate. However, CSG activity in New South Wales is increasing notwithstanding publicconcerns. The CSG potential of three Petroleum Exploration Licenses (PELs) are being assessedwithin the Southern Sydney Basin that provides a unique opportunity to develop resourcesstrategically around many abandoned coal mines. The question has been asked - what do theseabandoned coal mines mean to the project? Are they good or bad? Are they friend or foe? Thispaper att empts to answer these questions and in doing so describes the coal mine ventilation andgas management philosophies and practices used to assess gas production potential. The coalmining philosophies not only have the potential to assist in the construction of a highly successfulCSG project, but they also potentially add signifi cant pre production value by re defi ning how theresources and reserves are assessed and therefore valued. The behaviour of abandoned coal minesand the goaves within the PELs are not well understood by the petroleum industry. However, in the Illawarra region there is an abundance of coal mining knowledge and expertise that if properly focused can greatly increase the chances of project success."

Anoxic limestone drains (ALDs) have been widely used in the passive treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD), but their effectiveness has often been less than anticipated. Iron hydroxide often precipitates around limestone particles and inhibits neutralisation. To determine the conditions under which iron hydroxide precipitates, a small-scale laboratory ALD system was built to enable a detailed examination of the chemistry of iron within the drain. For one experiment, a mixture of limestone and quartz was introduced to the drain to assist in the determination of the key mechanism governing iron precipitation. Synthetic anaerobic acid mine drainage containing Fe2+ (~130 ppm), SO4 2- and H+ was pumped at a rate of 30 mL/min up a 90 cm tall, 15 cm diameter vertical column filled with limestone gravel of 98 per cent purity. Three sampling ports were fitted at equal intervals along the column; water was periodically extracted for analysis at the sampling ports over an 11-hour period. Experiments were run at influent pH levels of 2 and 4. Results show that acid neutralisation to pH greater than 6 occurred at the inflow end of the drain. The greatest amount of iron precipitation (19.5 per cent) also occurred in this area. The lack of iron precipitation on the quartz surfaces in the quartz/limestone mixture indicates that neutralisation is the key mechanism for the precipitation of iron hydroxide on limestone particles. A pe-pH stability diagram derived for the laboratory ALD system indicates that ALDs will not be effective for AMD with pH 2. Influent waters with pH 2 require a pe of -2 (Eh: -118.4 mV) to avoid Fe precipitation upon neutralisation. Influent waters of pH 4 require a pe between -2 and -4.

The seminar had its origins in an Inquiry into the Box Flat Disaster and one of the conclusions from this Inquiry was that there should be a better dissemination of technical knowledge and the results of research work. As a result of this Mr. W. Roach, Chief Inspector of Coal Mines in Queensland and Mr. R. Menzies, Chief Inspector of Coal Mines in N.S.W. had a meeting to see how this could be done. They concluded that it would be difficult to have the sort of regular meetings that would be possible where distance was not significant, but a seminar would be a major step toward satisfying this particular conclusion of this Inquiry. As a consequence, Mr. Roach, who is on the Committee of the Southern Queensland Branch of the Institute, suggested when the Branch programme was being planned this year that a meeting of this type should be held, and the Mine Fires Seminar which was held today is the result. We have received a great deal of support in arranging the Seminar. First and foremost I wish to acknowledge support from the National Coal Board in United Kingdom. The mechanism of clay slime flocculation in coal washing circuits is considered and it is concluded that polymer flocculants are most suitable. It was found that the addition of sea water with a polymer flocculant improved flocculation and settling, and it was also found that dilution of a flocculated pulp increased floc size and hence settling rate.In predicting plant consumption of reagent it was found that cylinder tests, or even pilot plant tests, could give erroneous results, particularly on flocculated pulps. Different flocculants may, however, be compared in cylinder tests.For filtration, flocculation with Separan plus sea water was much more beneficial than flocculation with Separan alone.INTRODUCTIONDuring the mining of coal, and its subsequent beneficiation by washing, large quantities of minus 10 mesh material are produced. This fine material, which consists of broken down shales and fine coal, causes difficulties in water clarification circuits, in refuse disposal, and in filtration of fine coal.These difficulties can be largely overcome by flocculation, and this paper discusses the mechanism of flocculation, the methods by which a selection of flocculant may be made from the large number available, and the limitation of the prediction of plant performance from laboratory tests. This work applies particularly to the washeries of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. (B.H.P.) and Australian Iron and Steel Ltd. (A.I. & S.) .

Inspection of ropes.GENERALWire rope, which was invented for, and first applied to mine winding, has become an indispensable aUXiliary throughout the whole field of mining, be it for underground, open cut, or dredge work, as well as the requirements of transport and treatment of ores.Though wire ropes appear simple collections of wire and fibre, the demands made upon them are many, and the stresses and abuses to which they are exposed in service are varying, and often of serious dimensions.The exposition of these stresses and abuses, particularly dynamic stressing, corrosion, etc., all of which seriously affect the safety and economical life of the ropes, is often enough to frighten most practising mine staffs, who are aware that before the requirements of economic operation stands the still more important question of safety in mining.
