In 2021, BHP and Metso examined processing of high-MgO nickel sulfide concentrates using Metso’s Ausmelt Top-Submerged-Lance (TSL) technology. Test work was conducted in Metso’s pilot test work facility in Dandenong, Australia to explore operability of the SiO2-FeO-MgO-CaO-NiO slag system across a wide range of compositions, temperatures and bath oxygen potentials. Pilot-scale testing aimed to define slag ‘operability limits’, representing the lowest bath temperature at which stable process and equipment operation could be maintained. This work was supported by FactSage™, version 8.2 (by Thermfact/CRCT and GTT-Technologies) thermodynamic modelling, slag viscosity measurements, physical characterisation of quenched slag samples performed by the University of Queensland and benchmarking of commercial-scale TSL nickel smelting operations. A wide range of slag compositions were examined, with Fe/SiO2 ratios varying from 0.4–1.1, CaO content from 0.8–7.0 wt per cent and MgO content from 6–19 wt per cent. Slag SiO2/MgO ratio, wt per cent CaO and matte grade were found to have the greatest impacts on identified operability limits. Operability limits were found to be influenced by both the solids content in slag and viscosity of the remaining liquid slag phase, with the relative contribution of these parameters heavily influenced by the slag composition. In the majority of trials, limits were defined by a theoretical solids content of 40–50 per cent, however in trials with a low Fe/SiO2 ratio and/or low wt per cent CaO, limits were characterised by a much lower solids content due to the increased effect of the liquid slag viscosity in determining the behaviour of these slags. The test work highlighted inherent flexibility of the Ausmelt TSL process to operate across a wide slag range of slag compositions and recover from process disturbances without an interruption to feeding. The trials also demonstrated the possibility for Ausmelt TSL technology to process concentrates with an Fe/MgO ratio as low as 1.4, which has important implications to the commercial-scale processing of high MgO feeds. Arsenic rejection across the trials was very good, with only 30 per cent of arsenic in the feed inputs reporting to the matte phase. Such high levels of arsenic removal provide the Ausmelt TSL process with a notable advantage over alternative smelting technologies.

Rio Tinto has actively committed to progressive reclamation, concurrent with commercial operations, at its Diavik Diamond Mine. The most significant piece of progressive reclamation undertaken at Diavik to date has been the construction of an engineered thermal rock cover for the mine’s largest waste rock storage area. This 80-metre-tall and 2000-metre-long area is known as the Waste Rock Storage Area – North Country Rock Pile (WRSA-NCRP) and contains the operationally segregated potentially acid-generating waste rock mined over the last 20 years. As part of the mine plan, an opportunity was recognised where a limited 1.5 per cent of the WRSANCRP surface area was required for storage of the balance of life-of-mine generated waste rock and a decision was made to advance the closure design almost a decade ahead of final closure. With over 12 860 000 tonnes of material placed and 57 443 dozer hours logged since cover construction, progressive reclamation on the WRSA-NCRP is scheduled to be complete in mid-2023, three years before planned cessation of commercial operations in 2026. The progressive closure of the WRSA-NCRP demonstrates Rio Tinto’s commitment to not only closure, but modern best practices with integrated mine closure. Over the past seven years, Diavik has overcome multiple implementation hurdles for this project including the psychology of operational standby, the financial mechanisms required to support closure, working within the constraints of a mine plan and the associated operational organisational structures. This paper outlines the lessons learned to provide an example of successful integrated mine planning for closure. The North Country Rock Pile project had three major learnings which resulted in an effective organisational structure that allowed for the execution of an integrated planning model for progressive closure. The initial hurdle the project faced was adapting the psychology of an operational open pit mining team. The team was an experienced mining group who came in with the perspective to target the shortest haul possible resulting in the initial perception that the longer haul of material to the NCRP was an un-necessary task impacting operational performance metrics. After the installation of an improved dispatch tracking system and performance metrics, it was possible to demonstrate that the mine was shovel constrained. This showcased the short haul was generating an increase in queue time not production. With updated performance metrics, the team was aligned to target a decrease standby through haulage to the NCRP. These performance metrics had to be reinforced by financial mechanisms. The operations team was able to offset costs by charging time to the capital project set-up for the closure of the NCRP. This allowed the operations team to receive credit for time that would have otherwise likely been standby. As well, the progressive closure project was able to receive the benefit of not having to incur costs for the drill, blast and load as that was done as part of the operation. This was a significant benefit to the project and one of the primary drivers for the early approvals of the work as the project costs were limited to the incremental haulage distance and placement of the material. Life of Mine Conference 2023 | Brisbane, Australia | 2–4 August 2023 114 While the combined operational and progressive closure approach provided financial advantages, it did result in the project being constrained by the operational activities. A traditional capital project is managed through a linear execution plan where the deliverables within a project are within the realm of control of the project execution team. However, the NCRP project had to be continuously adapted to the outcomes of the pit operations. This included geotechnical constraints, ore delivery, and other operational delays. To adapt, the planning module had to be dynamic but not reactive to allow for adjustments on a shift-by-shift basis. Based on this requirement the Diavik Closure Projects structure adopted a mine planning format. The team executed a similar planning timeline and reporting structure as the mine operations team, allowing planning to be integrated into the operational planning structures on a daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly basis. This resulted in the Projects team as a core pillar of the mine planning team. The process of continuous improvement spanned six years and has resulted in the project being ahead of schedule and under budget for the project’s scheduled progressive closure completion date of June 2023. The North Country Rock Pile project supports the argument that bulk earthworks progressive closure projects should be integrated into the operational mine plan. If the project is aligned the mine plan it allows for dynamic adjustments which capitalise on evolving opportunities inevitable in an operating mine. These cultural and organisational alignments should be supported by appropriate performance metrics and financial mechanisms to ensure united priorities. The result of this alignment provides long-term financial savings for the business as well as delivery of closure objectives.

The implementation of robust, reliable and accurate sampling systems is the key to the successful management of any mineral processing plant. The representative sampling of a mineral processing plant is the only way to determine what is coming into the plant, what is going out as fi nal product and what is going to tails. In plants with high gravity gold components, where high recovery effort gravity circuits are installed, the use of a gravity recoverable gold (GRG) sampling system can assist in the online monitoring of the performance of the circuit. The typical installation location would be in CIP or fl otation feed (ie cyclone overfl ow), downstream of the gravity circuit. A GRG sampling system generally consists of the following equipment: true proportional, continuous drive, linear cross cut sampler, secondary vezin sampler operated on a timer, a batch centrifugal concentrator, and sample dewatering module. The operating philosophy of the GRG sampling system is that the primary sampler operates on a continuous basis, generating a constant stream of truly representative sample. Consep's H&S drive system is unique in its ability to be able to operate in a continuous mode, therefore enabling a continuous stream of representative sample to be generated. The primary sample stream reports to the secondary sampler. The secondary sampler operates on an intermittent basis (nominally ten minute interval), resulting in a relatively small sample volume per shift. Normally the sample volume would be ten to 15 L per shift. The secondary sample rejects stream reports back to the batch centrifugal concentrator. The sample generated from the secondary sampler can be dewatered using a Consep H&S dewatering module. This device produces a final sample that consists of separate filter cake and filtrate. These are suitable for taking directly to the laboratory. The continuous stream of truly representative secondary sampler rejects is passed through an appropriately sized Knelson Concentrator, typically a KCMD7, KCCD10 or KCCD12 sized unit. This unit recovers any available GRG from the stream. The Knelson Concentrator is also purged of its gravity concentrate at the end of the shift. This sample, which is nominally around 1 - 2.5 kg of concentrate, is also taken to the laboratory. At the end of the shift the client will have a measure of the gravity recoverable gold content of the target slurry stream, as well as a true representative sample of the complete stream. Through the addition of a Knelson Concentrator to an otherwise typical sample station, it is possible to generate a true measure of the performance of your gravity circuit. This will take the guess work out of the daily variation in gravity circuit gold recovery, as the site knows whether the changes are due to gravity circuit equipment performance, or due to the natural variation of ore GRG contents. Maintenance planning can also be designed around the system, as the site will have a composite sample to measure the performance of the circuit, therefore indicating where performance has dropped and maintenance is needed. "Brazil is the sixth worldwide producer of aluminum and Votorantim (Metals) has been operating three bauxite open pit mines in a particular way of working. In those the deposits occur on the top of hills, under forest, coffee, eucalyptus plantation or pasture area.The deposits are not large and normally mining takes an average of two months to be completed before starting the rehabilitation process, which demands a good strategy in mining planning to achieve the production goals.The benefit function developed to select feasible areas uses, beyond production costs, fees from the owner by using their area and rehabilitation cost. Both are based on land use and occupation field survey data. In this process each area with different land use receives a specific rehabilitation cost as input into a block model.Once the selection is made the mining schedule begins, taking into consideration the following premise: the orebody needs to be mined in a short period of time because during this time, the surface owners receive from Votorantim a compensation based on the expected profits from their plantation or pasture, plus royalties related to the ore amount existing in their area.Not all operations have waste dumps. Waste is pushed down by bulldozers to the lower part of the ore border. After loading and transporting ore, the waste is handled back to the mined area to fit the topography. With this step concluded, the mined area is directed to the environmental team who, alongside university partners, develop land reclamation to return them to their owners, eg in 2011, 110 ha were rehabilitated of which 29 per cent is native forest.Votorantim closes many mined areas a year and currently the entire mine planning considers this particular way of operation, making profit with minimum interference with the community and the environment.CITATION:Artioli, P, Kato, M S, Romanel, A and Piermatei, M P, 2012. Mining exploration and development projects in Australia are being negatively affected by the highly complex regulatory and bureaucratic processes at all levels of government. These processes affect mining companies operating in Australia by impacting on timelines and the cost of developing a mining project. It is not uncommon for the granting of project approvals to take in excess of five years, meaning that mining companies struggle with productivity, efficiency, time frame and cost issues in respect to their projects in Australia. As the mining boom in Australia is moving from the investment to the production phase, it is now more important than ever to maintain a regulatory landscape that facilitates rather than discourages new investment.While one of our key arguments is that there is too much burdensome regulation and red tape in Australia, we are also strongly believe that regulatory intervention is necessary to ensure that appropriate checks and balances are in place to serve the public interest and manage environmental, health and safety, social and other development-related impacts that may arise from a mining project. However, the regulatory intervention in Australia has come to a point where it is excessive and starting to discourage valuable investment in mining projects for nominal return to the public. Excessive regulation or ‘red tape’ impedes productivity and competitiveness, deters investment and innovation and costs jobs, all of which ultimately impact on the growth of Australia and the standard of living of all Australians.This paper aims to examine and compare the federal, state and local regulations that govern mining projects in Australia. It will highlight how these regulations are unnecessarily complex, lengthy and duplicated and how they can be streamlined to reduce red tape. The Fairbanks Mining District in central Alaska was discovered in 1902 and since then approximately 7.5 million troy oz of placer gold, 250,000 troy oz of lode gold, and several thousand short tons of antimony and tungsten hap been produced from an area of about 1000 km . Historic lode production was from high grade gold-quartz veins that averaged 1.3 OPT free milling gold. Five main types of mineral deposits' are recognized in the district. I. Conformable, stratabound volcanogenic zinc, antimony, lead, and copper sulfides in places containing gold, silver and tungsten in bimodal metavoleanics (Cleary Sequence). II. Complex precious metal-bearing lead sulfosalt-quartz veins in Cretaceous granitic intrusives. III. Tungsten skarns adjacent to granitic intrusives. IV. Gold-bearing polymetallic sulfide-quartz veins crosscutting metavolcanics and metasedimentary units of the Cleary Sequence. V. Antimony-bearing gash veins along axial plane shears in various lithologies of the Cleary Sequence. Type I and Type IV mineral occurrences are currently being evaluated as low. grade bulk tonnage (target model 16-20 'million tons of 0.05 to 0.15 OPT)'and high grade moderate tonnage (target model 0.5 to 2.5 million tons of 0.5 OPT) gold deposits. The host rocks for Type I mineralization occur over a 30 km strike length and are at least 300 meters thick. Stratigraphic, structural, fluid inclusion, and isotopic data suggest that the Type IV mineralization is related to remobilization of Type I

High stress in rock masses can cause significant instability problems such as squeezing deformation in soft rock and rock bursts in hard rock. The support system applied in burst-prone areas in high-stress conditions is required to be able to carry high load and accommodate large deformation of the rock mass without experiencing any serious damage. Yielding support systems are promising to provide support for both squeezing and burst-prone rock mass encountered in mining or tunnelling at depth. They are ideally strong and stiff initially and then ductile after yielding (Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou, 2020). With respect to support design, a ground support system has to create a safe working environment under both static and dynamic loading conditions by providing the functions of reinforcing, retaining, holding and connecting elements (Cai and Kasier, 2018). Rigid rock bolts and cable bolts perform reinforcing and holding functions of a ground support system. In highly fractured ground or with large excavation spans (eg at roadway intersections or in caverns), unstable ground depth can exceed the length of typical rigid rock bolts (ie greater than ~3.0 m). In such cases, flexible cable bolts are needed to tie the reinforced and retained rock mass back to deeper and more stable rock. The flexibility of cable bolts allows anchor lengths greater than the tunnel opening that would otherwise restrict rigid bolts. Cable bolts also offer higher strength to weight ratio, with tensile strengths 2–3 times that of standard rebar bolts. This high strength comes at the cost of lower strain tolerance, typically around 5–7 per cent at break. Despite the lower strain tolerance, cable bolts are often used as dynamic support in demanding burst-prone ground conditions. The lower strain tolerance is compensated by allowing sufficient free length for stretching or incorporating a yielding device. There are a number of dynamic cable bolts available on the market and a number of testing campaigns have been undertaken to quantify the dynamic performance of these cable bolts. This paper reviews the existing range of dynamic cable bolts and discusses the potential areas for improvement and further research.

ENGIE, the current owner and operator of the Hazelwood Open Cut coalmine, are in the process of rehabilitating the mine site in preparation for mine closure. Bucket wheel excavators (dredgers) used during coal mining operations are in the process of being demolished, which involves the controlled felling of dredger components using explosives. With the mine located in close proximity to the Morwell township and other critical public infrastructure, it is crucial that the use of explosives and the possible implications for mine stability is well understood. The felling of Large Mining Equipment (LME) will apply an impact load immediately to the underlying coal benches with the adjacent coal batters potentially at risk also of adverse slope stability impacts. This paper presents the 3D stability modelling methods employed to successfully assess the potentially adverse stability implications associated with LME collapse.

Alfred Nobel first invented a practical detonator in 1863 and then the blasting cap in 1865. At that time the detonator was used on the end of a length of safety fuse to initiate nitroglycerine-based explosives. Since then the detonator has gone through a number of changes. The instantaneous electric detonator was the first to allow remote firing. The electric delay detonator followed and allowed for timing between holes. In the mid 1970s the NONEL« Tube was invented. This tube combined with NONEL« detonators meant that many of the safety issues, such as stray current and radio frequency, associated with electric delay detonators were eliminated. This system gave the mining industry a reliable and fairly accurate system with which to detonate shots of any size. Since the early 1980s a large amount of research and development work has been done around the world to create a more accurate detonator for the mining and quarrying industry. After years of research, electronic detonators have emerged as the most accurate and precise initiation system available to the mining and quarry industry today. Electronics provide the user with millisecond timing accuracy. The improved level of timing control allows operations to improve fragmentation, throw and reduce vibration levels. There are now a number of different electronic detonator suppliers on the market today. In 2004 Dyno Nobel formed a joint venture called DetNet with AECI. DetNet has a suite of electronic detonators: DigiDet«, HotShot« and QuickShot«. This paper will focus on the HotShot« system, the first of the three new initiation systems to be released to the market in Australia by Dyno Nobel.

This paper presents a geographic information system (GIS) based method for the prediction of ground movement and the associated impact on existing buildings and structures due to tunnelling in the North West Rail Link (NWRL) project. The NWRL is a priority rail infrastructure project for the New South Wales (NSW) Government and includes 15 km of twin tunnels between Bella Vista and Epping, which will be Australia’s longest rail tunnels. The NWRL tunnels will be constructed in an urban environment where the prediction of ground movements induced by tunnelling and the associated impacts to existing structures must be assessed in the early design stages of the project. An assessment process was developed using GIS able to respond to design changes.An iterative GIS analysis methodology was developed to generate ground settlement contours and identify impacted buildings and structures in response to multiple changes in tunnel alignment during design development stages. The GIS analysis undertook to rapidly provide detailed and accurate parameter information including tunnel depth from surface, tunnel separation, diameter and sample point proximity to the tunnel and assess ground movement contours along the project alignment. Determination of the ground surface settlements were based on empirical methods proposed by Peck (1969) and Mair (1993). The control parameters and the relationship between damage categories and risk classifications for impact assessment were based on Burland, Broms and de Mello (1977), Rankin (1988) and Boscardin and Cording (1989) methods.The GIS-based ground movement impact assessment approach adopted for the NWRL project demonstrates an efficient, iterative and robust approach and could provide an initial framework for other similar tunnelling projects where rapid design changes and early understanding of tunnelling impacts are required to bring greatest benefit to all stakeholders.CITATION:Mirlatifi, S, Cain, L, Ashley, J and Every, C, 2014. This abstract discusses a heap leach copper mine that was failing to perform and as a result was not meeting targeted production. The mine had numerous technical challenges including: high water inflows, low levels of geotechnical monitoring, performance issues with mining, resource model and grade control reconciliation issues, and unexplained low levels of performance from the heap leaching operations. A team from various organisations with specialist skill sets including: a forensic accountant, the owner’s representative and a mining engineer, was arranged to visit the site. The task was to investigate the situation and determine what could be done to turn the performance of the mine around. After an initial assessment in late 2018, efforts were directed to better understanding the operations and improving the performance of the site through preventative management. A key part included the creation of production forecasts that could be achieved that would help restore confidence in the operations. Uncertainty in the mine achieving production forecasts and the performance of the heap leaching operations were contributing to the decline of the operations. Investigations uncovered the fact that while the resource model could reliably predict total copper, a lack of sequential leach data meant the accurate prediction of soluble and insoluble copper species, both important for heap leaching, was difficult to do with any degree of certainty. The crushing and mining contractors also appeared to have suffered somewhat from a lack of management by the owner’s team and performance had affected the production of copper. Collaboration and management were used by the team to understand and stabilise the operations. Ongoing collaborative efforts by the management team, site personnel and contractors resulted in a positive outcome for the owners and their mine – and could at yours.

A real-time load-haul-dump (LHD) dispatch optimisation tool has been deployed at Panel Cave 1 and Panel Cave 2 at Newcrest’s Cadia Valley Operations. The tool, known as ORB, is the first known successful implementation of an optimisation-based, autonomous, real-time dispatch tool, custombuilt for underground mining operations. ORB can co-ordinate the optimal dispatch of LHD’s in a block cave to achieve a range of objectives while adhering to draw compliance and geotechnical constraints. It is an example of highly automated short-term interval control. This paper starts by outlining the pre-existing business planning process, detailing the simple logic that produced the daily draw order. Next, the motivations for a real-time dispatch tool are presented, drawing comparison to the limitations in existing planning processes and how these can be overcome through an optimisation-based, autonomous, real-time dispatch tool. Subsequently, the paper details the Ratio Bogging Draw Strategy, through which tonnes targets are expressed continuously on draw bells or draw points as a ratio of total cumulative cave draw. This signifies artificial planning boundaries are removed and that draw targets are linked within a cave; such that tonnes are unlocked by bogging other parts of the cave, instead of as a function of time. This creates incentive within the target mechanism for fixing and bogging struggling draw areas whilst allowing uncapped progress if all draw targets are progressing within compliance. Furthermore, the optimisation tool developed is outlined, including the data it uses and the objectives it optimises. Finally, detail on the improvements to operations the implementation of this tool has brought, and the business process change it has facilitated are presented using Newcrest’s Cadia Valley Operations as a case study.

Test work is the foundation upon which the success of projects and subsequent operations is laid, reflected in Professor Arthur Taggart’s pithy observation: ‘Make your mistakes on the small scale and your profits on the larger scale’. Indeed, Professor AllanTrench has succinctly noted that ‘Get the metallurgical characteristics wrong and you don’t have a project’.With deposits becoming lower grade, more structurally and mineralogically complex, final products requiring lower levels of impurities and tailings management demanding more attention, test work now assumes even greater significance in the acceptance and successful execution of a project. This paper is the first in a series aiming to stimulate thought on the metallurgical test work process by getting back to the fundamental basics through exploring and providing some guidelines for the metallurgical testing world, noting preferred practices as well as precautions and mitigations. This covers the key characteristics of metallurgical test work programs, including what needs to be done, sample selection, quality control and associated drivers, and most importantly, selecting, assessing and managing test work facilities. This paper explores recent industry training programs and lessons for supervisors. The Belbin Team Role model was used to increase participants’ awareness of behaviour and its application. The application of the Belbin model to underground, open cut mine and quarry supervisors is discussed.The key to team success may rest with the expertise and experience of its members, but increasingly effectiveness depends on how team members understand, acknowledge and support each other’s behavioural strengths. Discovering strengths is a challenge, both for their measurement and for the encouragement of team members to use the knowledge of themselves and others in the team. Using behavioural models provides a constructive approach and a language for supervisors as they build personal motivation and engagement.Prima facie, the mineral industry’s work may be too vigorous for teams and their managers could be more prone to use ‘solo’ or traditional management styles. Managers and supervisors must know when work allocated to a team is appropriate or where individual effort should be applauded and rewarded. For practical people with well-developed technical skills, improving the soft skills necessary for a supervisor requires some reflection and effort. The Belbin behavioural model can be an effective tool for recognising characteristics that can assist teams to be more productive.Experiencing the Belbin Team Role model as part of an industry qualification is important for supervisors studying to refine their team leadership skills. Data are available for participants to assess the nature of their teams and to confront the appropriateness of the behavioural mix for the work of the team and its individual members.So what are the next steps? All team development must have a place in the strategic thinking and plans of the enterprise. "Diesel particulate matter (DPM), in particular, has been likened in a somewhat inflammatory manner to be the ‘next asbestos’.From the business change perspective, there are three areas holding the industry back from fully engaging with the issue:There is no real feedback loop in any operational sense to assess the impact of investment or application of controls to manage diesel emissions.DPM are getting ever smaller and more numerous, but there is no practical way of measuring them to regulate them in the field. Mass, the current basis of regulation, is becoming less and less relevant.Diesel emissions management is generally wholly viewed as a cost, yet there are significant areas of benefit available from good management.This paper discusses a feedback approach to address these three areas to move the industry forward. The six main areas of benefit from providing a feedback loop by continuously monitoring diesel emissions have been identified: Condition-based maintenance. Emissions change instantaneously if engine condition changes. Operator performance. An operator can use a lot more fuel for little incremental work output through poor technique or discipline. Vehicle utilisation. Operating hours achieved and ratios of idling to under power affect the proportion of emissions produced with no economic value. Fuel efficiency. This allows visibility into other contributing configuration and environmental factors for the vehicle. Emission rates. This allows scope to directly address the required ratio of ventilation to diesel emissions. Total carbon emissions. PasmincoÆs Century Concentrator in North West Queensland commenced operations in November 1999. The nameplate production capacity of 500 000 tpa of zinc metal production in concentrate was achieved in August 2002. Completion of the production ramp up was successful due to the culmination of a number of initiatives throughout 2001 and 2002. Mine to mill interaction to understand and eliminate head grade related bottlenecks affecting Concentrator production and reduce feed variation. Grinding circuit process development û operating and process control strategies to improve stability and reduce grind size to support zinc recovery. Pumping upgrades to control spillage in ultrafine zinc flotation Low density zinc flotation strategy û to improve silica-sphalerite separation to improve zinc recovery while maintaining acceptable silica in final concentrate. Flotation circuit process development û froth crowders, froth cameras and reagent control strategies to improve primary zinc flotation performance. Review and implementation of longer campaigns between planned shutdowns to improve availability. Team reorganisation û to improve setting and implementation of metallurgical strategies. This paper describes these initiatives and their contribution in achieving the production target. It also notes the ball mill motor failures that delayed the successful achievement of the ramp up, and CenturyÆs response to minimise the production impact. The paper also outlines the capital improvement program that was implemented to improve zinc recovery to design 82.5 per cent recovery once the production rate had been achieved.

Open pit blasting at Ernest Henry Mining has the potential to cause damage to nearby underground workings. This paper is a case study of the blast vibration management project that was conducted to ensure open pit blasting did not adversely affect the stability of upper production levels or cause damage to the underground primary fan units. The two upper levels of the underground mine surround the lower portion of the open pit mine. The remaining underground mine workings are directly below the open pit mine. This paper details the process developed to prevent open pit blasting causing excess vibration in the underground mine. Measurement of test blasts combined with historic blast monitoring data was used to determine site specific blast vibration parameters. Threshold vibration levels for blast-induced damage to underground drives and the fan chambers were developed from benchmarking and non-linear numerical modelling. A Monte Carlo simulation model was used to predict vibration levels in critical underground areas. Blasts predicted to exceed maximum vibration levels could then be redesigned to avoid damage.A scale distance law for determining peak particle velocity (PPV) from the distance and charge weight of blasts was developed. Underground observations were used to develop a site-specific relationship between PPV and ground support/rock mass damage. A Monte Carlo superposition prediction model was developed and compared to measured data to refine input parameters. Standards for redesigning open pit blasts in order to reduce blast vibrations whilst minimising impacts on productivity are described. Non-linear numerical modelling was used to establish the dynamic capacity of the fan chambers, and set a PPV of 250 mm/s as a threshold for damage. The numerical model captured the full dynamic behaviour of the fan chambers and installed support, including transient stresses, strains and induced damage, when subjected to a simulated open pit blast.This case study also outlines a procedure for monitoring and predicting blast vibrations at other mine sites where open pit blasting has the potential to impact on a nearby underground mine.

In Australia, responsibility for abandoned mines can be unclear. With a few exceptions, state and territory governments have become responsible for abandoned mines on Crown land and private landholders are responsible for abandoned mines on freehold land. Abandoned mines pose risks and opportunities across the full suite of sustainability themes (environmental, human health and safety, socio-economic and community development) after mining ceases.Across Australia, there are more than 50 000 abandoned mines recorded, ranging in size from individual shafts to large polluting open cut mines. Addressing the safety and environmental impacts of these sites, as well as the socio-economic development opportunities of significant rehabilitation projects, requires the implementation of effective policies and programs. Qualitatively defined graded scales or ‘rubrics’ have been used for many years in student assessment and increasingly in the performance assessment of other sectors (Davidson, 2005). While risk-based maturity models have been used for safety prioritisation (Westrum, 1993; Hudson, 2007; DRET, 2008; Hancock, 2010) and evaluation of organisational development (Esteves et al, 2010), this paper is the first to adapt maturity models for the evaluation of abandoned mine rehabilitation programs in Australia.In this paper, we used indicators based on the national policy for abandoned mines to assess the maturity of abandoned mine programs. Fourteen elements of maturity were identified (Unger et al, 2012) under the five chapters of the national policy for abandoned mines (MCMPR and MCA, 2010). Jurisdictions were then evaluated and ranked on their maturity on the basis of information that was web-accessible. Information transparency of abandoned mines policies and programs is in itself one element of the maturity chart. Each jurisdiction in Australia was compared with one another and with a Canadian jurisdiction; the British Columbia (BC) Crown Contaminated Sites Program (CCSP), which represents leading practice (Unger, 2009; Unger et al, 2012).Our research found that in some jurisdictions in Australia there is little or no information on abandoned mine programs or individual abandoned mine sites on government websites, while other jurisdictions provided very detailed program information on planning, funding and implementation. Each jurisdiction in Australia, for which web-based information was available, had some elements where they were more mature than other Australian jurisdictions. For some elements, maturity ranked equivalent to the BC CCSP, but most Australian jurisdictions were less mature. There was only one element where a single Australian jurisdiction ranked higher than the BC program in maturity. Legacy mine policies, programs, priorities and funding information via departmental websites are easier to find in some jurisdictions, indicating progression toward greater transparency and more mature programs. A systematic approach to monitoring and evaluating abandoned mines programs is essential for accountability as it can demonstrate liability reduction over time and continual improvement. "Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) has an extensive history in the application of geometallurgy to the iron ore value chain. Fundamental to this has been the geological logging of material types which are assigned processing attributes such as lump per cent and density. Initially these were used for product (lump and fines) grade predictions in relation to grade blocks to be used within short-term planning horizons.More recently the predictive reach of the material types and their associated processing attributes has been extended due to their inclusion into geological block models. These predictions can now be used to influence mine plans across multiple planning horizons in such a way that the extremes of geometallurgical properties can be pre-empted and managed thus improving efficiency. Spatial material type domains are also used in the planning of metallurgical drill holes to ensure greater representivity of material than was typically obtained by chemical and/or stratigraphic criteria alone.Material type logging has also been enhanced by the introduction of modern, rapid mineralogical techniques that have complemented visual logging. This has enabled the identification and quantification of contaminant minerals and their relationships with host ore types to be established. This data is used to better manage product grade predictions and identify risks to the short-term plan.Work is ongoing in RTIO to further refine logging based predictions and in addition apply them to new areas of the business.
