The effectiveness of shear-flocculation as a method for upgrading simple mixtures of ultrafine (1-11 \lm) scheelite and garnet was evaluated. Statistical methods were used in the design and analysis of the main test program.The stirrer speed, stirring time, and initial weight ratio were all found to have significant effects on both the recovery and grade of the floes produced. The particle sizes also had an effect on the final grade. There were several important interactions between factors which also affected the results. Optimum conditions for shear-flocculation were established, and under these conditions about 80 per cent of the scheelite could be recovered at a grade which depended on the composition of the starting mixture. Starting with mixtures containing 10 and 50 per cent scheelite, the best final grades were between 20 and 50 per cent and between 70 and 90 per cent respectively, the actual value depending on the particular combination of particle sizes.

For Fe-Mn alloy production, two reactions are responsible for this process: the MnO reduction in the slag and the carbon dissolution in the bath. The smelting-reduction process has been studied as alternative route to be used to produce alloy so as steel. This technical paper presents some initial studies to be used to determine the main ways that one can have for the mechanisms for this reaction. The limited factors like mass transport or chemical reaction were analysed. The Mn content in the bath were varied and it was concluded that by increasing the former, dissolution of Mn into the bath was increased, so as a reduction of MnO in the slag. For carbon dissolution, it was used a experiment with a stationary bar, this one was added into the bath, after ten minutes probes were catched, by temperature 1600¦C, for the dissolution of MnO, one graphite crucible was employed, after 45 min the slag and alloy were analysed. After the experimental part, some curves were plotted against time, based on these graphics, and kinetic analysis was made.

Gas well tests were performed on 17 wells in the Roma area. The procedure used in the test programme incorporates an initial isochronal test followed by what is described as the "two flow drawdown" technique. The second flow of the two flow drawdown test was conducted for sufficient time to allow transient investigation of the surrounding reservoir. This combination of tests allows the evaluation of stabilized production capacity in addition to the determination ,of several important reservoir characteristics.It also provides a qualitative indication of reserves, by reflecting the presence or absence of reservoir boundaries within the drainage area affected during the test.

During the operation of the Parkes process of desilverising, and in the earlier days of the continuous process, gold and silver were removed separately from softened lead bullion. Gold was removed in the Parkes process by a selective zincing, and -in the continuous process by treatment with zinc in a special de-golding kettle, in each case a crust being obtained carrying the gold and a small portion of the silver. Actually the process could have been more correctly termed a de-copperising process, on accountof the relatively large amount of this metal present, and its affinity for zinc, which caused it to enter the crusts produced.The crust was treated in reverberatory furnaces, where the bulk of the copper and zinc was removed in by-products, and the resulting "gold bullion" cupelled to give adore bullion containing approximately 2,000 ounces gold per ton.For the purpose of parting this dore, a small Balbach-Thum plant of 11 cells was used, and once each six months a short campaign was conducted on the accumulated metal.With the development of the process of de-copperising smelter bullion by means of sulphur, when a bullion averaging about .004% copper was constantly available for refining, the need for a separate de-golding process disappeared.The de-golding kettle of the Continuous Process...

New processes and revision of old processes in other industries are the harbinger of new and revised products in refractories.Few of the changes are dramatic; generally they are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. New developments are additional to, and inclusive of, established practice.Therefore in this paper it is necessary to repeat much of what is already known in order to show the development taking place.FIRECLAY REFRACTORIESGeneral technology Fireclay refractories are the most common, the most varied and the most versatile of all refractories. Virtually any composition of silica and alumina up to the composition of kaolin is possible. For purposes of comparison they may be classified in the Continental fashion in accordance with chemical composition or in the American way according to "duty". That the two methods are equivalent is shown by an inspection of the alumina-silica diagram of Bbwen and Greig (1924). 'Fireclay refractories are composed of a glassy and a crystalline component derived from the chemical and physical nature of the raw materials used in their manufacture.

IN concentrating mills, where several millerals are recovered for realisation in more than one product, various systems are used to express the relative economic value of the work done, and, in the hope that it may prove of use to other operators, the writer will describe a system which, in his opinion, is more complete than any other that he has seen published.The controlling factor in all mill work must be based on the economic result represented by the greatest margin possible between the realizable value of the products and the cost of obtaining same.From a mill-man's point of view these are affected by the following factors:1. Metal contents of ore.2. Grade of products.3. Recoveries.4. Working costs.The grade of ore milled is usually outside the mill-man's control, but this may exercise a considerable influence on the grade of his products, metal recoveries, and revenue per ton of ore. Higher grades or recoveries may be obtained by using a more expensive process, or by additional grinding or reagents, and the economic comparison can only be arrived at by obtaining an analysis showing the monetary value of each variation within the possible limits.In the system to be described, the value of unit variations of metal contents of the ore, grade of products and recoveries are calculated in terms of a monetary unit per ton of ore with the returning charges ruling, and any suitable metal prices. In the latter half of 1973 a contract was given to Roberts-Holland Joint Venture for the stripping of the southern exhaust airway.The contract was carried out efficiently and relatively cheaply. It was completed 2 months ahead of schedule.The sinking stage and in particular the drilling jumbo proved to be a success and helped produce an above schedule stripping rate.No major problems were encountered with ground conditions or ventilation. A survey of the shaft showed the diameter to be within the set limits of 5·49 m ± 0·15 m.

The methods and equipment developed and used at the Mount Isa mine to obtain samples of uncemented hydraulic fill lying above major horizontal pillars are described. From existing underground development, samples were obtained at distances up to 50 m, of which up to 30 m was through hard rock. Samples were used to predict fill behaviour as it affected mining security during recovery of the pillars.Specialized equipment for difficult sampling situations and also other sampling exercises are described.

Used in conjunction with geology and geophysics, geochemistry provides powerful exploration tools of special relevance to Australian environments. New methods are needed that will confront the forthcoming emphasis on locating concealed orebodies. Deep weathering is conducive to techniques using groundwaters or gaseous emanations as sample media. Increasing use is anticipated for isotope measurements and for recognition of country rock characteristics that denote proximity to mineralization. Improvements in the sensitivity, reliability and portability of analytical instruments will underpin the contributions of geochemical methods to future mineral exploration.

The Gippsland Basin is unique in Australia in that it is a major resource based industry centre within a sensitive and special environmental context supplying Melbourne, a major urban/industrial environment with most of its energy 'on-line'. The environmental effects of the supply systems are generally local and mostly affect only those who are directly or indirectly dependent on the upstream systems. The major urban metropolis which is served remains largely unaware of the environmental impacts of the system upon which it is dependent, except when specific attention is drawn to them as in the case of the Latrobe Valley Outfall, algal blooms in the Gippsland Lakes, etc. This paper discusses the environmental context within which the energy industries operate, the environmental legislative framework which applies, the likely environmental impacts and some solutions. The energy resources of the Gippsland Basin occur in an area where the physical environment exhibits a wide variety of inherent energy states in its physical and biological regimes. The off-shore regions of the oil and gas platforms has to be able to withstand the wind and wave energy generated in a shallow sea in a confined waterway lying athwart the main current and climatic stream. The coastline includes the delicately balanced quiescent environments of Corner Inlet with its 'wilderness' tourism industry and the powerful surf and long shore drift and dunes of Ninety Mile Beach.

One of the chief drawbacks to Bendigo mining always has been the difficulty of draining the mines in an equitable manner, so that each company or mine owner bears the properly share. The trouble seems to have been apparent on this field since the diggings were discovered. One mine would push on more expeditiously than its neighbour in looking for the precious metal and sink its shaft, whilst those in the vicinity would simply potter about, and discontinue sinking until gold was struck in the deeper ground, and: then they would go ahead, start sinking, while the pioneer would have to pump all or most of their water. This sort of thing continued here for years until the leases were worked down to the very deep ground and the water became such a b.urden on those companies that had deep shafts, that first one stopped hauiing and then others; with the result that over 1000 feet of water was allowed to accumulate on the New Chum line. lt appeared that if something were not done the whole of the main line of reef in the Bendigo district would be at a standstill, when a scheme was formulated and handed to Mr. Lansell, who, with other gentlemen, took the matter up, and at the present time all the mines on that particular portion of reef are in full work and the water all bailed out.lt is this scheme that I am requested to place before you and also to give you the details of the work done since its adoption.

Up to 19 chemical parameters were studied in flotation pulps in six Australian lead-zinc concentrators with the aim of obtaining a better understanding of the nature of, and changes in, the chemical environment. This paperdiscusses collector residuals, metal concentrations in solution, and other parameters.Collectors used in the plants studied were various xanthates, Z-200, and Aerofloats. Xanthate residuals varied in different ways in most plants. However the general trend was for residuals to be at the O· 5-2 p.p.m. level in lead flotation and O· 5 p.p.m. or less in zinc flotation.Aerofloat residuals were also variable but in the plant concerned were at a much higher level (8-10 p.p.m.) than xanthate residuals. Z-200 residuals were in the 10-20 p.p.m. range and it was found that the Z-200 added to zinc flotation was reporting in dam return water and entering lead flotation.Copper concentrations in solution were negligibly low in those plants where cyanide was not used. When cyanide was used, copper was at the 5-20 p.p.m. level and appeared to be present as Cu(CN)-2. However the hiocyanatepresent may be important. Xanthate was also present in these solutions.Zinc concentrations ranged from 0·1 to 800 p.p.m. in different plants. The general trend was for the zinc level to be highest in the grinding circuit and to drop during flotation. However there was always an increase in zinc concentration when copper sulphate was added, even tho.ugh this incre.ase was not permanent, and the increase was greater with higher copper sulphate additions.The manganese concentration also increased appreciably during copper-activation of marmatite. In some plants lead concentrations increased from 0·1 to 1 p.p.m. during activation of marmatite.Calcium concentrations (20-1200 p.p.m.) and magnesium concentrations (10-600 p.p.m.) tended to be fairly stable in each circuit.

A study of the electrolysis of PbS in molten PbCl2 showed cathode efficiencies which increased with current density at fixed sulphide concentrations, and decreased with increasing sulphide concentration at fixed current densities. The anodically produced sulphur dissolved rapidly in the melt, the rate increasing with temperature and sulphide concentration. Experiments with diaphragm cells, made to determine the relative effects that dissolution of lead and sulphur have on the cathodic current efficiency, demonstrated that dissolution of sulphur was the major contributor to the lowering in efficiency.

A new lead refinery with a capacity of 230,000 tons per year commenced operation at Port Pirie in October, 1959. This plant superseded the refinery which had operated from 1933 with the advent of the continuous lead refining process. The incorporation of new equipment following local metallurgical developments, together with the overseas demand for lead of extremely low antimony content createddifficulties in operating the original plant. The new refinery project was undertaken to cover this disability and to gain the full advantage of the new processes.Desilverising and softening are carried out in units identical in size to those used previously. Metallic zinc is recovered from the entire output of desilverised bullion by vacuum distillation. Final refining is carried out by batch treatment with caustic soda yielding lead of purity previously unattainable at Port Pirie.These two processes replace continuous dezincing by oxidation, a high temperature process which caused large quantities of lead and antimony to be recirculated. The final stage is a batch process; therefore the product composition can be checked before casting. Individual batches can be adjusted to produce special alloys to consumer's specification.Improved casting equipment allows the quantity production of pigs of good physical characteristics either as 56 lb bars or 2000 lb pigs.This, together with the high purity of the lead, assures the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (RH.A.S.) position in world markets.Automatic control systems are extensively employed, particularly on the vacuum dezincing unit.The anticipated financial benefits have been achieved mainly by a reduction in the tonnage of recirculated materials, a smaller labour force, and reduced maintenance requirements.INTRODUCTIONIn December 1956 a decision was made to build at Port Pirie a lead refinery on a completely new site, and in October 1959 the new refinery was brought into operation. An on-stream shale detector has been developed that is suitable for use on conveyor belts carrying iron ore of up to 200 mm particle size. The shale is distinguished from high-grade iron ore by means of the substantially greater total natural gamma-ray activity (400-3000 keV) of the shale, which is due to the presence of uranium (214Bi), thorium (208TI) and potassium (40K). Other gangue materials, sueh as highly siliceous cherts and jaspilites, escape detection because of their low activity. A dynamic trial of the shale detector at Mt Whaleback, using a large-volume (100 × 100 400 mm long) "Polyscin" Nal(TI) gamma-ray detector, demonstrated that as little as 20 tonne of ore on a conveyor belt (equivalent to partial truckloads of ore) can readily be monitored for shale content.

With a particular electrode configuration, and a particular combination of electrode voltage and roll speed, a relatively small increase in electrode voltage, or a relatively small decrease in roll speed, resultsin a marked improvement in the separation of zircon from ilmenite. In general, fine minerals can be separated using a higher roll speed, or a lower electrode voltage, than is required to separate coarse minerals. The ionizing electrode should be reasonably close to the point at which mineral is fed on to the roll, and nearer to the roll than the non-ionizing electrode. The optimum conditions for the separation of zircon from ilmenite may not apply for the separation of other non-conductors from other conductors.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the high tension separators used in the Australian beach sand industry are efficient, this efficiency has been gained very largely by a process of trial and error, and not by a systematic study of the effects of changes in the operating variables. The optimum roll speed for a particular electrode position and electrode voltage, and the optimum electrode voltage for a particular roll speed and electrode position, can both be determined quite readily. It is not so simple to determine the optimum electrode position for a particular electrode voltage and roll speed. The reason for this is that the electrode used in high tension separators consists of two parts-an ionizing and a non-ionizing electrode respectively. The angular and radial positions of these electrodes, relative to the feed roll and to each other, affect the behaviour of conductors and non-conductors to varying degrees.

The adverse health impacts from diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposure are a well-known global concern. The building evidence has triggered underground mining operations to review existing atmospheric conditions and assess the scale of the challenge faced. South32’s Cannington Mine (Cannington) evaluated the ability to provide a healthy atmosphere from a whole mine approach, taking into account existing preventative controls including: maintenance strategies, fuel quality, mining operations, ventilation provisions, monitoring protocols and effective education and training programs.During the evaluation process, Cannington gave due recognition to the advice and guidance provided in the Queensland Guidance Note 21 (QGN21), the Guidelines of New South Wales’ MDG29 and Mining Industry Advisory Committee (MIAC) of Western Australia. Each of these documents advises a dilution rate of >0.06 m3/s/kW is best for reduction of DPM exposure in underground mines.Achieving the prescribed mine ventilation rate typically results in the need to directly invest significant capital into increasing ventilation infrastructure in order to further dilute contaminants. In today’s economic market of volatile metal prices and increasing pressures to meet regulatory requirements, it can become challenging for established metalliferous operations to create a balance between optimisation of current ventilation infrastructure and capital outlay.In order to obtain and correctly justify the requirements for capital investiture Cannington conducted a ventilation operational analysis for the life-of-operation, identifying the existing air volume envelope was adequate for current and future production rates by optimising existing primary ventilation infrastructure through the implementation of a modified ventilation on demand (VoD) and air conservation system.This process achieved sustainable operating and capital cost reductions without compromising delivery of adequate ventilation to work areas. The process also recognised that engaging mine workers’ ownership of their work areas is crucial to maintaining a technically efficient and operationally robust ventilation system.This paper will concentrate on Cannington’s existing preventative controls, their implementation and their management for the prevention of increased DPM exposure; reducing the risk of both short and long-term health impacts to ‘as low as reasonably achievable’ (ALARA).CITATION:Black, J and Reid, D, 2017. NATURE OF ORETHE Edna May ore consists mainly of clean quartz of a moderately hard and tough nature. The gold content is "free" and fairly coarse, so that a large percentage is recovered by amalgamation. The ore is practically free from metallic minerals.GENERAL OUTLINE OF PLANT AND TREATMENTThe ore, received from underground in trucks, is broken by a jaw breaker, then stamp-milled, follow~d by partial filie-grinding in pans. Mercury is used both in the mill boxes and pans. The pulp, on leaving the pans, passes over amalgamating tables and is then elevated by tailings pulp to cone classifiers and separated into a sand and slime product, each product receiving a separate cyanide treatment-sand by leaching in vats and slime by agitation and decantation in a "Trent" plant. Gold solutions from both sand and slime are precipitated together by zinc shavings in the usual type of precipitation boxes. Accumulated slime is trucked from the dam to a vortex mixer and from this point receives with the cement slime the same treatment.ORE BREAKING AND TRANSPORTThe ore is trucked from the brace of the shaft along an overhead line to the breaker station. Hence it is, by means of a "kick-up" dumped upon a grizzly, set with 2-in. spaces, the oversize being broken by a 15 x '9 Fraser and Chalmer jaw...

Laboratory and field work on the use of wetting agents for suppression of colliery dust is described. Although the results were inconclusive they were not discouraging and further investigation is required. The use of certain wetting agents may constitute a healthhazard.INTRODUCTIONCoal dust presents explosion and health hazards to the coal mining industry. The problem of dust suppression is particularly acute where water alone is unsatisfactory for this purpose. The addition of a surface active agent (wetting agent) to the water should enable the dust particles to be more easily wetted and thus more easily prevented from entering and spreading through the mine atmosphere.Investigations into this effect carried out at The University of Sydney mainly under research grants from The Joint Coal Board (Dawson and Hargraves, 1955; Charlton and Curnow, 1957) are summarized, and information on the possible harmful effects of certain wetting agents is given.Twelve local manufacturers and five importers supplied 52 wetting agents in liquid, solid, powder, and paste form.The active material content varied from approximately 10 per cent to 100 per cent and the cost per pound from 8d. to 14/3.LABORATORY TESTINGPossible test methodsThree methods of laboratory testing were considered.1.
