Block caving has been the favoured mining method for large underground hard rock mines for the last few decades. The orebody must be of a size large enough to cave and generally amenable to a caving method. Typically, these mines ranged from 15 000 to 50 000 tonnes per day (50 kt/d) and have been some of the largest and most productive underground mines in the world.Now mining companies, in the quest for improved shareholder return, are looking for higher production rates from new underground mines. Whether a ‘Greenfields’ development, or a replacement for ageing large open pit mines, minimising capital and maximising production has been a focus of project teams. These new block cave mines are what have become known as ‘super caves’. These caves range from 80 kt/d to over 150 kt/d and are being planned or constructed by several major mining companies including Codelco, Freeport-McMoRan, Newcrest and Rio Tinto.Issues facing these super caves include high initial capital costs, very long development periods and significant technical challenges. These issues tend to make it difficult to present an attractive business case for such a project.This paper will discuss some of the potential benefits as well as the technical challenges and risks of operating a mine with the block or panel caving method at these very high tonnage rates. Considerations including geotechnical conditions, development rates, panel widths and ore column heights are discussed. The application of microwave energy as a substitute for conventional heating has drawn interest from many researchers in extractive metallurgy. Microwaves have a heating effect just as many other forms of radiant energy. Microwaves are able to penetrate the substance at which they are directed and in being absorbed heat the material from the inside. As a result of heat generated in the interior of a particle, microwaves can affect the rupture of a particle (in this case a host ore) and break down the matrix of the particle (host ore) and expose the recoverable mineral to the leaching reagent. Two series of leaching experiments were carried out at temperatures above 90????C using a conventional heater (hot plate) and a modified 850 W, 2.45 Ghz microwave oven. One series of tests was carried out at ambient temperature. A pyritic/arsenopyritic gold concentrate was leached with 3.3 kg/t to 6.8 kg/t NaCN for two hours. The extraction of gold at 6.8 kg/t NaCN was higher in microwave assisted leaching (59 per cent) than the extraction obtained in leaching at conventional heating (39 per cent) and ambient temperature (28 per cent). Extraction of gold was dependent on the size fraction used and was 48 per cent for û75 ¦m, 43 per cent for û90+75 ¦m and 37 per cent for û150 + 90 ¦m size ranges.

Gas sensing systems are becoming more important in many industries such as oil, gas and mining operations. Particularly in underground coalmines, accurate and reliable monitoring of toxic and combustible gases such as methane, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide is essential. Available conventional electrochemical sensors for gas measurements in underground coalmines suffer from shortcomings such as cross-sensitivity response, limited lifetime, high calibration cost, maintenance cost and safety. Recent studies have found that fibre optic-based gas sensors have potential to eliminate these issues. These sensors can also be used for long distance and distributed sensing of various gases, both of which are important for underground gas monitoring. In November 1969, New Zealand Steel Ltd pioneered the commercial use of the SL/RN solid fuel direct reduction process to make sponge iron as a feed material for electric arc furnaces. Serious process problems with the use of green balls and coal injection were progressively overcome. The process was developed by New Zealand Steel along a radical route, of feeding the fine grained raw ironsand concentrate and coal directly to the kiln. Contemporaneously with this development of direct reduction, steelmaking process innovations were made that enabled the arc furnaces to operate successfully with the high volumes of acid slag. The further expansion of New Zealand Steel's primary steelmaking capacity to replace the currently imported hot and cold flat rolled products is under consideration. The requirement to produce about 600 000 tonnes of steel slabs will be an opportunity to further modify iron and steel making plant and processes to optimise the economics. The conceptual and preliminary engineering selection of options is described.

Industries in the Kwinana area have embarked on a journey of improving the eco-efficiency of Western AustraliaÆs primary heavy industry area. The Kwinana Industrial Area has some unique characteristics that provide both opportunities and barriers. The Kwinana Industries Council and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry are working with the industries to identify a range of projects that can deliver improvements for both environmental and economic æbottom linesÆ, and to progress these projects using internal and external resources. The evolution of the process, its relationship to the ethos of operating companies, and the availability of resources to pursue projects, is an interesting study with lessons for others interested in taking the same course.

The past 10 years has seen use of computers become widespread in the mining/exploration industry (including coal, precious and base metals, oil/gas and industrial minerals). This paper will concentrate on the use of computers as a tool to provide technical solutions (including data management, mine planning and operational support) to this industry rather than the use of computers to aid accounting, maintenance and inventory (æcommercialÆ) applications. This paper will review the processes and benefits of the use of computers in mining. We then review the use of technical computing locally here in New Zealand and see what business benefits local users have found from using computers in mining. We have, in research for this paper, spoken with mining software vendors from around the world to find out what is currently the æbest practiceÆ in the industry. The paper will then list what those vendors see as the ultimate improvement on the cards for the future of mining software.

Fletcher Challenge Limited through its subsidiary Grampian Mining Co Limited has carried out an ore evaluation of one of New Zealand's largest known deposits of ilmenite located at Barrytown on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand. The ilmenite is located in a beach sand environment which has previously been mined for gold. Two analytical techniques were developed to quantify the resource. Considerable difficulty was experienced in this phase of the evaluation due to the presence of major inclusions within the ilmenite grains. Wet and dry concentration circuits, utilising spiral, wet magnet, high tension and plate electrostatic separators have been designed to produce ilmenite from the ore. Studies to utilise the titanium content of the Barrytown ilmenite have been made. Recent work has been directed towards a titanium dioxide pigment process.

A research project was commissioned by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) to improve the understanding of tailgate strata mechanics and to provide a more rigorous engineering basis for tailgate support design. A deformation mechanism termed æskew roofÆ was defined which relates the regional influence of differential horizontal strata movement (shear) about longwall extraction to gateroads. Confirmation of the mechanism was achieved by field investigations which included measurement of the shear displacement along weak interfaces. Under geological and mining conditions where the skew roof mechanism operated, strata units were found to move progressively further towards the goaf with height into the roof. 3D numerical modelling was used to assess the major geotechnical factors controlling the mechanism and to determine appropriate support strategies within a æskew roofÆ environment including the role of cables versus standing supports. The skew mechanism is considered relevant to; all roadways in the vicinity of longwall extraction including the faceline itself, chain pillar design, and support design.

The Golden Cross mine is a Joint Venture between Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited, as Manager, and Viking Mining Limited. The mine is targeting Zero Lost Time Accidents as a goal.   The Golden Cross operation produces gold and silver from both underground and open pit. The mine is based on an epithermal gold-silver deposit. Treatment of ore is on a campaign basis for each ore type (i.e. underground or open pit). Milling is conventional SAG Mill and Ball Mill grinding circuit followed by carbon in pulp recovery of gold and silver. All tailing materials are treated through the Cyanisorb process to reduce cyanide levels prior to being discharged into the tailings dam.

The effect of liner wear on SAG mill performance has gained much attention in recent years. It is commonly observed that the three key performance criteria of SAG milling; throughput, power and product size all improve as the liner wears.The increase in throughput is generally ascribed to the increase in the grate apertures and the increase in mill volume due to the wear of these components. Whilst the decrease in product size is attributed to the reduction in lifter height and angle, resulting in more breakage by means of attrition and abrasion.Though it is widely acknowledged that the wearing of liner components such as Lifters, Plates and Grates have a significant impact on mill performance, their individual contribution to changes in mill performance has been unclear, and resultantly lead to questions like; what percentage of the throughput increase can be attributed to the increase in mill volume (plate wear)? and how much can be attributed to the increase in grate aperture (grate wear)?It has been found that through the use of grinding surveys, analysis of production data and JKSimMet it was possible to separate the effects of changing liner profile, increasing mill diameter and increasing grate aperture on the mill performance allowing for the quantification of each.The outlined methodology allows for both troubleshooting of problem liner components which reduce milling efficiency in their wear life as well as providing a basis for a more quantitative approach to liner design and reline scheduling.CITATION:Toor, P, Powell, M, Hilden, M and Weerasekara, N, 2015. The early development patterns of both Australia and New Zealand were substantially in parallel and both were heavily indebted to gold mining for, providing the stimulus to growth. However, since the mining boom, of 1895 - 1899, the mining sector in New Zealand has progressively declined, while in Australia it has assumed an increasing importance in the economy. The continued dominance of minerals in Australian trade, and the fact that eight out of the top ten companies in Australia are directly involved in mineral exploration and production, has strongly influenced government and public attitude's to the minerals sector. Although the legal framework of mining and exploration Acts and Regulations are similar it is in, the method of administration, particularly in regard to exploration and prospecting licences, that the gulf across, the Tasman is apparent. Despite the relative ease of application and granting of licences in Australia, in the more settled south eastern part of the continent we are finding more and more land is being zoned unavailable for exploration. In the remote areas, the Aboriginals now control nearly ten per cent of the land area of Australia, virtually with drawing that portion from exploration. The concept of 'Australianisation' has softened a hardening attitude against foreign investment in mining on the part of the bureaucracy. This anti-mining attitude is fortunately, not shared by the public, and we can but hope that the will of the Australian people can filter through to our masters in Canberra, and ease the rapid increase in the number of regulatory bodies which does so much to inhibit the normal conduct of business. The delays caused by interminable hearings and committee investigations all cost money. This cost can only rebound back on the end consumer, who after all is a voter.

The banded nature of the quartz veins which form the Empire lode at the Golden Cross mine, is perhaps their most striking feature. Petrographic studies show that significant differences occur between the bands in terms of textures, quartz grain size, calcite, adularia and kaolinite content, and the form, concentration and mineralogy of sulfide phases.   The d18Oquartz values of individual bands within the vein material range from 7.3-10.9ë. Calculations show that the d18Oquartz values can be adequately explained by temporal variations in the system temperature, boiling and/or variations in the systems fluid/rock ratios.

High speed diamond cutting has extensive applications in civil and mining engineering. A project involving the diamond sawing of black granite is investigating the nature of the diamond cutting process. A sawing machine was devised to adjust the cutting load and measure cutting speed. Cuttings were collected for size distribution analysis. The surface produced by interaction between diamond. grits and the rock was subjected to microscopic investigation. Increasing load prompts the proportional increase in the cutting rate. But the mean size of cuttings shows little change. The photomicrographs of the cutting tracks indicate neither patterns of crack formation nor signs of the ductile behaviour of the rock. A diamond cutting model for hard rock is formulated on these observations. Diamond cutting is a process of surface failure, which advances in four stages. The polycrystalline characteristics of a hard rock and the action of high-speed diamond grits guarantee the creation of crack nuclei which develop into cracks in various directions. This network crisscrossing cracks enable the stripping of this surface layer from the rock.

Low displacement fault zones often comprise a mesh of interlinked faults, extensional-shear and purely extensional vein fractures. Hydrothermal mineralisation localised around such structures testifies to their importance as conduits for fluid flow. Mesh structures are most commonly developed in situations approximating bulk pure shear but predominantly simple shear meshes also occur. They appear to develop through the infiltration of pressurised fluids into a heterogeneous rock mass with varying material properties. In some circumstances, mesh formation appears to be a precursor to the development of major through going faults. Mesh formation generally involves hydrofracturing (Pf > s3, at least locally) and the condition Pf ~ s3 to be maintained for the mesh to remain a high permeability conduit, requiring fluid over pressuring at other than shallow depths in extensional-transtensional regimes. The volumetric character of earthquake swarm activity appears to result from the passage of hydrothermal fluids through mesh structures, representing a form of distributed fault-valve action along suprahydrostatic hydraulic gradients arising from magmatic intrusion, compaction overpressuring, metamorphic dewatering, etc. Fluid redistribution in the crust is influenced by maximum hydraulic gradient (not necessarily vertical), by existing permeability anisotropy arising from bedding and other forms of crustal layering, and by structural permeability developed under the prevailing stress field. Strong directional permeability develops in the s2 direction, parallel to fault-fracture intersections within the mesh and orthogonal to fault slip vectors. In particular tectonic settings, stress-controlled permeability allows strongly focused flow through fault-fracture meshes with high potential for mineralisation. Favoured localities for mesh development include short-lived link structures along large-displacement fault zones such as dilational jogs, lateral ramps, and transfer faults.
