The claim is made in a number of patents1'2'3'4 that some compounds of the class known as aryl sulphides have collector properties. One of these patents generalizes the claim to include all aryl sulphides, whose generic formula is R-S2-R' (where x = 1,2, . . . ), with the restriction that if the aromatic radicals R, R' contain substituent groups these groups may not contain nitrogen or oxygen. Moses, Hess, and Perkins cite as evidence for their claims the results of flotation tests on Anaconda and Miami copper ores using diphenyl sulphide, ditolyl disulphide and dinapthyl disul-phide as collectors. The use of alkyl sulphides as collectors has also been reported5 with the conclusion that the alkyl sulphides are better collectors than the corresponding aryl sulphides. The experimental work cited appears to confirm this contention. In order to test these claims with respect to diphenyl sulphide, a sample, purchased from the Eastman Kodak Co., was tested against Anaconda ore. The procedure followed. was that of Moses, Hess, and Perkins. A sample of ore weighing 500 • grams was placed in a laboratory ball mill. To this was added 220 grams of water, 0.06 grams of commercial diphenyl sulphide (1/4 lb. per ton of ore), and 0.8 grams of lime (3 lb. per ton of ore). The material was ground until 93 per cent passed a 65-mesh screen. This pulp was diluted to 16 per cent solids. A sample of the diluted pulp was placed in a Minerals Separation type of laboratory flotation cell. After a a-min. agitation period, pine oil was added and the froth collected for a period of 15 min. This test recovered 68 per cent of the copper, with a ratio of concentration of 6.8:I. The tailing assay was 0.3 per cent Cu. Moses, Hess and Perkins attained a recovery of 75 per cent, with a ratio concentration of I2:I. Although these results do not compare too well with those of Moses, Hess and Perkins, subsequent tests showed an improvement, as judged by vanning of the tails. It is concluded, therefore, that the patent results are confirmed. Contact-angle Tests In order to study the response of the various minerals, found in Anaconda ore, to commercial diphenyl sulphide, some contact-angle tests were made. Polished particles of bornite, chalcodte, chalco-pyrite, pyrite and quartz were conditioned for 15 min. in a suspension of diphenyl sulphide in water. The concentration of this suspension was 0.284 grams per liter, this being the concentration of this reagent in the ball mill. The conditioned particles were rinsed with water (not rubbed with filter paper or boiled linen) and then tested against an air bubble in the bubble machine, with the following results: born-

Until recently there were very few dry grinding rod mills used. The early installations performed as anticipated. In the last seven years a number of dry grinding rod mills have been made, most of which have been used for grinding iron ore. The recent installations have not operated as anticipated in accordance with practices learned from wet rod milling. The paper does not establish any definite rules for the application of dry grinding rod mills but does attempt to establish some guidelines that can be followed. The paper reviews a number of flowsheets describing the problems encountered and some of the solutions found. Completely dried compared to partially dried feed is reviewed. Problems encountered in scaling up from pilot plant to production-size mills are described. Rod sizing, effect of rod length, rod bending, rod breakage, and rod tangling are discussed. While wet grinding rod mills have been used for 50 years to grind ores and make specifications sands, dry grinding rod mills have only recently come into significant use in the mineral industries. Among the materials now being processed in dry grinding rod mills are (1) lead sinter, lead slag, and limestone; (2) iron ore; (3) silica; (4) cement clinker; and (5) coke. Because the application of wet grinding rod mills was well understood at the time that dry grinding rod mills were introduced, the criteria and guidelines for selecting the former were carried over to the selection of the latter - in some cases with the anticipated results, but in many cases not. It is the purpose of this paper to describe, through a series of flowsheets, some of the recent problems encountered with dry grinding rod mills, to point out the solutions to these problems, and to set forth some guidelines for the selection and application of these mills. When dry grinding rod mills came into use, the following facts about their wet grinding counterparts were already well established: (1) The performance of large-sized mills can be accurately predicted from the performance of rod mills 5 or 6 ft in diameter. Wet grinding mills as large as 14 ft in diameter (inside shell) by 20 ft long with rods 19.5 ft long can operate satisfactorily.

Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken, Eindhoven, Netherlands)— After the departure of our friend Dijkstra to the United States, investigations on the effect of alloying elements on the behavior of nitrogen in a iron were continued in Eindhoven. We too found internal friction curves with two separate peaks for iron containing nitrogen in addition to 0.5 atomic pct V or 0.5 atomic pct Mo. Our first publication on these investigations" appeared almost simultaneously with the paper now under discussion. At first sight our experimental results seem to be in harmony with their conclusions, but a closer examination reveals that in the case of the Fe-V-N alloy the abnormal peak is not controlled by one time of relaxation only. Whereas iron containing 0.5 atomic pct Mn or Mo absorbs an amount of nitrogen of about the same magnitude as that absorbed by pure iron under identical conditions, iron containing vanadium absorbs in addition one nitrogen atom for every vanadium atom. This last amount, far exceeding the first amount in the case under consideration, combines chemically with the vanadium and causes no internal friction. The "free" nitrogen in the vanadium alloy gives rise not only to a damping peak corresponding to that in pure iron but— due to the presence of VN particles in the metal—also to the abnormal peak at higher temperatures. The VN particles create interstitial sites around themselves where the free nitrogen atoms are bound much tighter than in the normal interstices. These abnormal interstices, therefore, will capture free nitrogen atoms rapidly, whereupon these give rise to the abnormal damping. The binding energy in the abnormal interstices is not the same for all, and with coarsening of the VN precipitate the distribution of these energies is displaced toward the side of stronger binding. This is deduced from a shift of the summit of the second peak toward higher temperatures (from 80" to 88°C in our experiments) caused by prolonged heating at 950°C. The auto-oxidation of sulfur dioxide to form sulfuric acid in commercially produced barren and recycle liquors, containing 1.66 and 4.56 gpl Fe respectively, from Elliot Lake was studied. A gas mixture, containing 3.5% SO2 and air was introduced into these liquors through a frit at a rate of 6.0g SO2 per hour per liter of solution. The barren and recycle were heated to 60°C. At the end of the first 24 hours of the process the concentrations of acid produced were 158 and 220 gpl H2SO4 for the barren and recycle respectively. Corresponding conversion efficiencies were 70 and 83%. In the period from 24 to 36 hours the rate of acid production decreased so that the H2SO4 concentrations at the end of 36 hours were 180 gpl for the barren and 260 gpl for the recycle; average conversions for the initial 36 hours were 55 and 68% respectively. Many investigators1'2'3 have considered the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to form sulfuric acid in aqueous solutions containing metallic ions. A summary of the work performed on this subject prior to 1946 has been presented by Keyes4 who described the auto-oxidation process as follows. Keyes also suggested that in this second reaction ferric ion serves as a catalyst for the conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfuric acid. Neytzell-de Wilde and Taverner5 have reported on the use of auto-oxidation to produce a 4 to 5% sulfuric acid solution for use in a cyclic leach process at South African uranium plants. This paper describes investigations carried out to determine the feasibility of using the auto-oxidation process to produce sulfuric acid solutions of as high concentration as possible using commercially produced uranium plant barren and recycle liquors from the Elliot Lake region of Ontario. These liquors contained 1.66 and 4.56 gpl respectively of iron, chiefly in the ferrous state. This investigation is of particular interest to the uranium producers in Elliot Lake where the ores contain 3 to 4% sulfur, as sulfides. Flotation of these sulfides and roasting of same to produce SO, bearing gases have been successfully demonstrated using conventional methods.6'7 Barren and recycle solutions, as described previously, are also produced in large tonnages by these uranium producers. The experimental method and apparatus used to examine the auto-oxidation process will be described first. Then the tests carried out on laboratory prepared aqueous solutions containing ferric sulfate to determine optimum conditions will be presented. The next section will describe the tests using the commercial barren and recycle liquors. A final section will summarize the conclusions of the work. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURES Two types of solutions were used in the tests, a laboratory prepared aqueous solution containing definite amounts of ferric sulfate, and commercially produced iron bearing solution obtained from a uranium leaching plant in the Elliot Lake area. Two liters of a solution to be examined were placed in a 3 in. diam by 30 in. long glass cylinder with a cross-sectional area of 7 sq in. A mixture of air, and SO2 supplied from a lecture bottle for convenience, was introduced into the bottom of the vessel through a standard 30 mm glass frit, 700 sq mm in area. The temperature of the apparatus was controlled by a heating tape and variable transformer. Exhaust gases were vented to atmosphere. At the end of the test period the gas flow was shut off and the solution was analysed for H2SO4, Fe ++, and Fe +++, by conventional means. Four variables were examined using the laboratory prepared aqueous solution of ferric sulfate. First, the effect of SO2 concentration, from 1 to 1076, in the feed gas mixture was considered. (communication to the Secretary*) :-No doubt there are as many different methods of starting a blast-furnace as there are men who assume that responsibility. Having blown-in a furnace a few years ago in a manner similar to that outlined by Mr. Sweetser, things went along so well at the start that I had time for a little reflection on what was going on inside the furnace. I saw the wood turned to charcoal practically, and it occurred to me, why should I use wood when I could put in the charcoal in the. first place, and thus save a lot of time, and also eliminate the dangerous gas from the wood, which is the cause of most of the accidents in starting up a furnace. I had a furnace out for repairs and decided to use no cord-wood in blowing in. I put in about a carload of charcoal and used no wood except some shavings and oily waste at each of the tuyeres. The furnace had 16 tuyeres and was 100 by 22 by 14.5 ft. Hot rods were put in each tuyere' and the blast started immediately at 11 a.m. Within 5 mill. the air was all driven out of the stack and the gas lighted of its own. accord at the top of the furnace. It was allowed to burn for 5 min. longer and then the bell was closed and the gas taken to the last stove and the last boiler on the gas-main. It was all clone so quietly that it was hard to realize that the gas was down. The tuyeres were as bright as if the furnace had been in blast for a long time. I have learned since that others have used the same method, but they had not passed the good advice along.

DEVELOPMENTS respecting beryllium during the past year have been sufficient to center attention on it as likely to be the most important of any of the chemical elements that have recently found a place for themselves in technical industry. This importance is only potential, however, largely because adequate supplies of beryllium ore will be necessary. The beryllium industry will be only as great as the mines which support it. To find and develop large mines will be the problem. Chief of the immediate commercial developments in the United States is beryllium-copper and its espousal by Anaconda and Riverside even at present high prices. According to the pamphlets of these companies, it ap¬pears that beryllium is to copper nearly what carbon is to iron. When one considers that the tensile strength of pure copper is about 33,000 lb. per sq. in., but that the addition of 1.5 to 2.5 per cent of beryllium produces a heat-treatable alloy with a maximum tensile strength of 220,000 lb. or over, the analogy to carbon and iron is made strikingly, clear. Striking among the properties of beryllium-copper is its resistance to fatigue, claimed to be equal or superior to that of spring steel. It needs little imagination to foresee a great industry for this alloy alone.

CeRtain compositions of the light, i.e., aluminum-rich, alloys of aluminum with magnesium and copper have become quite well known within the past ten years under the name of duralumin. These alloys are used for rolling and forging and can be so treated as to develop quite remarkable mechanical properties. Thus a properly heat-treated alloy containing about 4 per cent. of copper and about 0.5 per cent. of magnesium, rolled into sheet or rod, will have a tensile strength of approximately 55,000 1b. per sq. in. (3866 kg. per sq. cm.) with an elongation in 2 in. (50.8 mm.) of about 15 per cent. This alloy, duralumin, was developed by Wilm,1 and its properties more fully described by Cohn.2, The authors considered it worth while to investigate the mechanical possibilities of the light alloys of two somewhat analogous ternary series; namely, of aluminum-magnesium-nickel and aluminum-magnesium-manganese, to study the effect of variation of composition upon mechanical properties within the alumimum-rich group of the aluminum-magne-

The total value of world offshore mineral production in 1970 is estimated around $180 million-less than 1% of the total onshore value for that year (Table 1). As such, offshore mining is still a relatively small industry. Commercial operations center around production from unconsolidated surficial deposits lying in shallow waters of the continental margins. While minerals recovered include sand and gravel, iron, tin, limestone, and aragonite, other possible mineral targets have been identified For consolidated deposits, only two offshore operations are known to exist. They are Alaska Barite Co.'s Castle Island mine (see p. 46) and Freeport Minerals Co.'s Grand Isle mine in Louisiana. At Grand Isle, sulfur is recovered from an offshore platform utilizing the Frasch process. Also, Freeport recently announced reactivation of its offshore Caminada sulfur mine at an estimated capital cost of $23 million.

Research was conducted into cold briquetting dross arisings and metallurgical coke fines from an Imperial Smelting Furnace (I.S.F.) as an economic means of agglomerating fine materials for smelting in a blast furnace. A mechanism was postulated whereby strong bonds were developed within the briquettes; laboratory scale smelting trials and full scale plant trials are included in the paper with a description of a two tonne/hour briquetting pilot plant. Benefits from smelting briquettes in an I.S.F. were measured directly in metallurgical coke savings and, indirectly, by a significant improvement in sinter plant productivity.

One problem of reservoir engineering is the early estimation of the size of newly discovered reservoirs. Often these reservoirs are the expansion type in which sizeable pressure drops occur incident to the production of small fractions of the oil reserve, above the bubble point, and a material balance equation may be solved to find the reserve. The early form of this equation' considered only the compressibility of the oil. Later Hall2 showed that the compressible nature of the formation rock is a significant factor in production above the bubble point, and he presented a new equation which includes a formation (rock) compressibility term. This note presents a further extension of the material balance equation as applied to volumetric, unsat-urated reservoirs above the bubble point by including a term for the presence and compressible nature of the interstitial water. DERIVATION OF EQUATION During a decline in average reservoir pressure, ?p ?p, — p1 the initial reservoir volume V,, will decrease to some value V, due to the reduction in pore volume as a result of a decline in the hydrostatic pressure within the formation, and v, = V,, [l — cr ?p]......(1) The formation compressibility c, is expressed in terms of change in pore volume per unit pore volume per psi.
