The capillary effects in reservoir rock are discussed in terms of the pressures they cause in sandstones and dolomites. Data for the two-phase case (oil-gas or water-gas) and for the three-phase case (oil, water and gas in rock) are used to demonstrate that in one sense the wetting preference of a rock depends on its saturation. The nature of capillary hysteresis is described for partially stable conditions, and the concept is enlarged. Reproducibly measurable pressures include the "capillary pressure," which is the pressure difference between any two phases that are each interconnected; the "threshold pressure," necessary to force a nonwetting phase through partially saturated rock; the "displacement pressure," which is that special case of the threshold pressure in which both phases fully saturate separate portions of the rock. Displacement pressure is equal to the minimum value of the "capillary pressure." The theory of flow including capillary forces is developed at the producing surface of a well to reveal the presence there of a pressure discontinuity in the gas (or other nonwetting) phase that can be controlled to the end that more oil may be poduced from an oil field. Experiments with packed sand-flow tubes having artificial producing surfaces support the theory. Introduction The basic surface quantities acting in an oil field are two: namely, surface tensions and contact angles. These are the quantities, variously expressed, and particularized as spreading forces, adhesion tensions, heats of wetting, etc., which are measured in the laboratory by techniques mostly confined to flat or circularly cylindrical surfaces. Such measurements have not had the extensive engineering application they seem to deserve because in most practical cases they are unavoidably compounded with the complex and unapproached subject of the internal shape of the interstices of rock. In this paper it is intended that the pressure differences developed in rock by capillarity be examined, defined, and given some engineering use in terms of some new measurements that have been made. Such pressure differences—namely, the capillary pressure, the displacement pressure and the threshold pressure—seem to provide a proper contact between the basic molecular quantities and the oil field. While certain modifications of usage will be undertaken, the present effort rests upon the background of work by the U. S. Geological Survey,l by Versluys, and especially by W. 0. The various lead producers have given the subject of lead drosses much attention in recent years but the problem of their economical treatment is yet to be solved. Formerly the copper in the furnace feed was removed from the furnace in the form of matte. The speiss at that time consisted principally of the iron arsenide. The practice today is to roast off most of the sulphur and the copper in the feed forms a dross in the furnace, which is removed from the furnace with the lead. This material is poured into the drossing kettles and allowed to cool down to but slightly above the freezing point of lead. The copper dross, containing almost all of the arsenic and part of the antimony, is skimmed off and treated in a small reverberatory furnace at most plants. This is essentially a liquation process. The skimmed dross contains from 70 to 80 per cent lead, and much of this lead is liquated out. The products from this treatment are: (1) impure lead, (2) speiss and (3) matte. The speiss from the reverberatory furnace was studied in this research. The literature on the subject is of very little assistance, as almost no work has been done on the problem of establishing the exact identity of the various phases present. One author(1)† states that speiss consists of a series of isomorphous compounds of the general formula FexAsy in which the Fe may be replaced by Ni, Co, Cu, Pb, Ag, Au, Pt, Zn, Cd and the As replaced by Sb, S and Bi. Hofman(2) states that the iron arsenide present is Fe5As. Experimental Work In the present research, the author used for methods in an attempt to determine the composition of the various phases: (1) chemical, (2) microscopic, (3) roentgenographic and (4) thermal. Previous to this research, considerable time had been spent making analyses of different speisses, but unfortunately no very definite conclusions could be made as a result of these analyses.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to summarise development of design processes used in the 1100 oreoody as a result of experience encountered. Design methods have been developed as a result of the history of ground behaviour, free-standing qualities of cemented back fill and mass blasting techniques. This paper contains an historical review of design methods previously described by Matthews ( 1972 ) , Hornsby and Sullivan (1977 and 19781, Kirkby, Blair and Hutton (19781, and Stewart (1980). The reasoning behind design philosphy changes are discussed and placed into context with methods now adopted. The 1100 orebody is Mount Isa's main producer of copper ore (5 million tonnes per year ) . Proven reserves are 120 million tonnes at 3.2% Cu. Location of the 1100 orebody in relation to overall mine geometry was well described by Dayton (1976). Geology The orebody is located in a series of massive brecciated shale lenses, in either a siliceous or dolomitic matrix, surrounded and separated by a uniform shale sequence. The whole formation is truncated at depth by a faulted contact with a greenschist facies metamorphic sequence below (Figure 1 and Figure 2) Mathias and Clark (1976). The breccia is known locally as silica dolomite and contains nearly all the economic mineralisation. Interfingering of shale and breccia often results in irregular boundaries to the silica dolomite and the ore limits. Geometry The geometry of the orebodies is shown by Figures 1, 2 and 3. Figure 3 also shows the location of the copper orebodies in relation to the lead orebodies. Structure Although the orebody is contained within the massive breccia (u.c.s. 150-250 MPa), it is cut by shear zones sub-parallel to the regional bedding (north-south striking, dipping approximately 60o to the west), and diagonally by major transverse faults (Figure A). These major faults have continuity in excess of 300 metres, with varying amounts of displacement up to 200 metres, and are zones of potential movement.

Historically, rock deposits and sand deposits of titanium minerals came into production about the same time, although there may be some argument as to what is meant by production. Beach deposits of heavy minerals in India (Figs. 1-4) and Brazil (Figs. 5) were worked for monazite about the turn of century, but as there was then no market for titanium minerals, these were thrown away. The rock rutile deposits at Roseland, Va., Fig. 6, were worked to supply rutile for titanium chemicals and for coloring ceramics long before there was a titanium pigment business. The pigment industry started about the middle twenties, both in Europe and the U. S., and almost simultaneously the rock deposits at Ponte Vedra Beach near Jacksonville, Fla., were worked for titanium content. Since those days, production from both types of deposits has continued to grow at a rapid rate; many deposits of both types have been found, and reserves have grown to very large figures. In total tonnage of reserves, there is no doubt that the rock deposits are far ahead of the sand deposits; nevertheless there is a very large tonnage of commercial sands available. It is the quality of titanium mineral in the sand and the relatively lower costs of operating sand deposits that have kept them abreast, at least in annual tonnage produced, with the rock deposits. The principal titanium mineral used is ilmenite, but as soon as that mineral began to be sought as a titanium ore, it was obvious that there are ilmenites and ilmenites. Textbook ilmenite should have the composition FeOTiO2 and should analyze 52.6 pct TiO2 and 36.8 pct iron as Fe. The Indian ilmenite, for almost a generation the standard ore for manufacturing pigment in the U. S., was found to analyze about 60 pct TiO, and only 24 pct. Fe, and most of the iron is in the ferric condition. The whole process of pigment manufacture in the U. S. was built up on the use of a raw material of that grade, and the American chemical engineers who operate the pigment plants shuddered at the thought of using a rock ilmenite with 45 pct or so of TiO, and nearly 40 pct Fe. Intensive search was made around the world to find other deposits of rich black sand, like the Indian beaches, but although a few were found, there was some objectionable feature about each. A deposit in Senegal, south of Dakar (Fig. 7), was worked for a while, but an organic coating on the grains made attack by acid difficult. Modern practice would have included a scrubbing operation, in a caustic soda bath, to eliminate the organic coating. Brazilian deposits were numerous, but individually small, and shipping from them difficult. Deposits on the east coast of Ceylon had many attractive features, but the ilmenite analyzed only 54 pct TiO2 and could have been used only with a penalty. Sand deposits with 2 pct ilmenite, like those now worked in Florida, would not have been considered commercial ore, even if they had been known at that time. Most rock ilmenites are associated or mixed with hematite or magnetite, which accounts for the lower titanium and higher iron values than in the sand ilmenites. The Norwegians, English, and Germans, with cheap Norwegian rock ore at hand, learned to install in their pigment plants adequate capacity on the black side, as it is calltd, and counterbalanced the extra cost of plant, and larger amount of acid used, by the lower cost of ore. When World War II arrived, two of the largest pigment manufacturers in the U. S. had to learn how to use the Adirondack ilmenite, but one of them very gladly went back to sand ores when the Florida deposits came into large-scale production after the war. The other continues to use Adirondack ilmenite and finds it commercially attractive to do so. Rutile is not a raw material for titanium pigment manufacture by the sulfate process, since it is insoluble in sulfuric acid. In addition to its small consumption in chemicals and ceramics it began to be used in quantity in welding rod coatings. With the outbreak of World War 11, and the tremendous need for welding rods in shipbuilding and other structural steel construction, rutile suddenly became in heavy demand. The sand deposits on the eastern shore of Australia (Fig. 8A) which had been worked in a small way since 1934 were brought into production, and some stream placers in Brazil were worked and rutile concentrates shipped to American

In many engineering structures, the mechanical properties of large volumes of rock must be considered. Typically, such properties are assumed to be the same as those of small laboratory samples, although it is clear that the laboratory samples do not contain the joints, faults, and other natural planes of weakness of the rock mass. A cheap, convenient testing procedure is needed with which the engineer can more accurately assess the strength and elastic properties of natural jointed rock. As a first step in this direction, a test has been developed capable of determining mechanical properties of large samples in their natural undisturbed state. In the present paper, some preliminary experiments on relatively unjointed material are described. Numerous attempts have been made to measure the deformation modulus of rock masses with varying degrees of success. Rocha (1), Grimm (2), and Alexander (3) have placed flat jacks in a slot in the rock and measured the pressure required to deform the slot. Bonnechere (4) has grouted large flat jacks in granite masses and performed similar experiments using a variety of strain measuring techniques. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has conducted radial jacking tests in which a uniform radial stress is applied to the inside of a tunnel of circular cross section and radial deformation is measured by extensometers located at various depths in the tunnel fall. Plate jack tests (Rocha (5), Shannon and Wilson (6)), pressure chamber tests, and cable jacking tests (Zienkiewicz and Stagg (7)) have all been used to determine in-situ deformation modulus. Several bore hole techniques have also been used to measure rock deformation. These include bore hole jacks (Goodman (8)), bore hole dilatometers using expandable membranes (Menard (9)) and bore hole penetrometers. Most of the above tests except the radial jacking test have an unknown stress distribution and require considerable approximation to calculate a deformation modulus. These approximations include the use of elastic theory for solutions of rigid plates, thick-walled cylinders, etc., and determination of values for Poissons

T RACES of sulfur have a marked influence on the physical and mechanical properties of many iron-base alloys. The commonly used combustion method for the determination of sulfur content is not accurate enough at the 50 ppm level by weight and below to be useful in determining the influence of sulfur. Kriege and Wolfe' have described a method for the determination of sulfur in iron alloys in which the sulfur is evolved as hydrogen sulfide followed by reaction with N, N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine, and iron (111) to form methylene blue which is measured spectrophoto-metrically. This method of determining sulfur has been used to study the activity of sulfur in Fe-Si-S alloys,' but has not been previously applied to the determination of sulfur in Fe-Ni alloys because of the insolubility of nickel in dilute hydrochloric acid. Dissolution of nickel in dilute hydrochloric acid, however, can be greatly accelerated by the addition of a small amount of platinic chloride.3 By combining these two techniques in a procedure in which 0.005 pct platinic chloride in 1:l hydrochloric acid is used as the dissolving fect on the strength of the material. However, ductility is influenced by the presence of discontinuous precipitation. In Fig. 5, percent elongation data at room temperature and 1400°F is shown for two sets of specimens of Waspalloy which were solution heat treated at 1950°F and either quenched or slow cooled to the aging temperature and then aged for 100 hr at 1292" and 1598ºF, respectively. At room temperature the existence of a discontinuous precipitation cell at grain boundaries (see data point marked by arrow) has no apparent effect on ductility. However, at elevated temperatures a pronounced lowering of ductility occurs when discontinuous precipitation has occurred in the specimen. It would appear that the morphology of discontinuous precipitation "cells" at grain boundaries would be highly conducive to the initiation of cracks which in turn lead to premature "grain boundary" failure.

Development: Iron Ore In Peru Utah Construction Co., of San Francisco and a Peruvian Government corporation have signed an agreement for development of a large iron orebody in Peru. Most tests show 60 pct iron or better. Most of the ore is magnetite. Although ore will be shipped mainly to Eastern U. S. blast furnaces, shipments to the West Coast may develop as the orebody opens up. The construction firm indicated three American steel companies have shown interest in the project. The orebody is located 300 miles south of Lima and about 15 miles from the coast at the same longitude as New York City. Allen D. Christensen, executive vice-president of Utah Construction noted that the distance is shorter between Peru and the East Coast. The ore deposit measures about four to five miles in one direction and 10 miles in the other. As many as 15 outcroppings within these limits have been reported. Several of the outcroppings are thousands of feet long by several hundred feet wide, Christensen said. Shipments between 100,000 and 200,000 tons of ore per month are projected by the company. Cost of opening the mine to production may go over $5 million, Christensen said. It would include building of docks for ocean going vessels, housing, and heavy duty mining and processing equipment. The contract with the Peruvian government gives Utah Construction six to eight months for additional tests and a 20 year concession for mining the orebody. Peru will collect royalties on all ore. The company will also supply about 300,000 tons per year for an electric furnace to be installed by the Peruvian Government at Chimbote. No steel is produced in Peru now. Utah Construction formed the Argonaut Mining Co. last year, and was shipping iron ore from British Columbia to Japan at a rate of more than 50,000 tons a month, before winter weather decreased operations.

While coal was undoubtedly seen by the early travellers within the state, the first mention of it was in the late 1820's when hunters put some stones from a creek bed under the logs of a large camp fire, and awoke later to find the stones on fire. The stream was later named Coal Branch; the location was at the eastern side of the present Bibbs County.1 In the Louisville Daily Journal of Feb. 11, 1831, the following short editorial note appeared: "Tuscaloosa Coal.-A small quantity of this article has reached Mobile, and has been tried in the office of the Patriot; it is said to be an excellent article. We invite such of our friends as desire economy in fuel, love a cheerful and constant fire, or would eschew a smoky room, to call and examine." On a geological map published in 1832, the "Carboniferous group" is shown and a spot near Tuscaloosa indicated as showing bituminous coal,2 and this is again alluded to in Morton's Synopsis, 1834. A brief description of the coal fields in the state in 1834 said that in winter coal was brought down the. Black Warrior River to Mobile and sold there at the same price as Liverpool coal, $1.00 to $1.50 per barrel, ($10 to $15 per ton) and that the writer was using it in his laboratory.3 At that time it was in local use by smiths and an iron foundry was using it in Shelby County.4 In 1836 some coal was mined in the Birmingham district, chiefly in the northern portion of the Coosa basin, where it was loaded on barges and taken down the Coosa Rivers.5 "William Whitman dug coal out of Wolf Creek (Walker County) in 1837," and in the same county, in 1839, the first coal shaft in the state, was sunk. This was near the mouth of Lost Creek and was known as Frierson's Shaft. It was operated by a hand windlass, using two tubs.1

Coal mine bumps are a serious hazard to life and property in the mines of east-central Utah. Research into geologic factors associated with these bumps indicates that the bumps are spatially and genetically related to structural and stratigraphic features. Some bumps are directly related to stress accumulation along faults, either from natural causes or as a result of mining. Frictional properties of bedding planes between coal and roof rock, and between some rock units within the roof, directly affect the deformation of coal ribs, and hence the incidence of bumps. These frictional properties are related to the lithology of the roof rocks as well as to the sedimentary structures within the rocks. Commonly a sequence consisting of 1/3 ft of carbonaceous silt-stone, about 2/3 ft of rider coal, and several ft of massive siltstone or sandstone overlies the main seam. The sequence causes difficult roof conditions in the mines, difficult mining conditions and, directly or indirectly, many bumps. The U. S. Geological Survey has studied the relationships between geological features and coal mine bumps at Sunnyside, Utah, for about six years. This paper presents the initial results of a pressure maintenance by water return project in the Lower Pawelek reservoir of the Falls City Field, Karnes County, Southwest Texas. Production is from the Lower Wilcox section at an average depth of 6,030 ft on the downthrown side of a "down to the coast" fault. Of particular interest is that the reservoir oil is high gravity and low viscosity but far undersaturated with gas at the original reservoir pressure and temperature. The early pressure and production history indicated only a partial or limited water drive, and this fact, coupled with the characteristics of the reservoir fluid and artificial lifting problem.. made advisable the water injection program to maintain reservoir pressure. The paper includes a description of the reservoir and reservoir fluids, the pressure and production history, a description of the water injection facilities, and the results of reservoir calculations involving Hurst's unsteady state flow and the material balance equations for calculation of water influx and prediction of the pressure-production relationship at various rates of withdrawal. The reservoir calculations and initial field results indicate that reservoir pressures in excess of 85 per cent of original pressure can be maintained by control of water injection even at very high rates of production. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to report the initial results of a pressure maintenance by water return program in the Lower Pawelek reservoir, Falls City Field, Karnes County. Texas, and to calculate an empirical relationship between pressure and production in this limited or partial water drive reservoir. Location The Falls City Field (Fig. 1) is located two miles north of the town of Falls City in Karnes County, Texas, and is approximately 50 miles south-southeast of San Antonio on U. S. Highway 181. Discovery and Development The initial block of leases was taken after a surface geological survey identified a major east-west fault and closure on the south or downthrown section. The discovery well, Southern Minerals Corporation's Joe F. Bartosch 1; was completed at 4,650 ft in the Lower Bartosch sand in December, 1944. Drilling was continuous until December, 1946, and resulted in the discovery of 12 oil reservoirs between 4,600 and 6,050 ft in the Middle and Lower Wilcox formations. These are shown on the cross-section (Fig. 2). As of the current date there are 64 oil wells completed as follows: Southern Gulfshore Magnolia Minerals Oil Petroleum Reservoir Corp. Co. Corp. In spite of recent trends in the United States toward construction of steam generating plants near mine mouths, and toward use of high-voltage direct current for long-distance transmission of electricity, coal in substantial amounts is being transported over relatively long distances to serve specific needs. As coal is a low-cost bulk commodity which is more suitable for use near the point of origin, some of these long hauls are of considerable interest because they show what can be done under the pressure for more and more coal to support industrial and economic growth. Japan has an Insatiable Appetite for Coal Perhaps the longest U.S. coal journey begins in the east Appalachian Basin of southern Pennsylvania, eastern West Virginia, and southwestern Virginia. High-quality coking coal mined in these areas is shipped by rail to Baltimore, Md., and to Hampton Roads, Va., where the coal is reloaded on freighters for shipment primarily to western Europe and Japan. In 1967, shipments of coal to western Europe totaled 19 million tons, and shipments to Japan totaled 12 million tons. Japan also imports coal from Australia, the U.S.S.R., Canada, Poland, the People's Republic of China, and to a lesser ex- tent from several other countries. In an effort to solve long-term needs, Japanese steel interests have contracted for the purchase from the Kaiser Steel Corp. of 51 million long tons of coking coal over the period 1970 to 1985. The coal will come from the Kaiser Steel Corp. mine near Fernie, British Columbia. This arrangement will reduce Japan's future dependence on Appalachian Basin coal.

Geological Engineering is now a recognized curriculum in most of the mining schools in United States. Graduates of these schools are scattered over the face of the earth, participating in exploration and mining enterprises of diverse character. They are engaged in the mapping of new mineral deposits, in the extension of old deposits, the estimation of reserves, microscopic analysis, and in the direction of exploitation and conservation of man's natural resources. The training of men qualified to carry out these technical phases of modern industry has fallen essentially to the mining schools. For the most part they have met the demand for technically trained men in the mineral industries. Schools Offering Geological Engineering Degree The mining schools have passed through the early stages of their development and at the present offer varied curricula covering the fields of geological engineering, mining engineering, and metallurgical engineering. Usually a B.S. degree is offered in any of these three fields. However, .there has been some tendency of recent date on the part of the Engineers Council for Professional Development to question the validity of a B.S. degree in Geological Engineering. The of this paper is to examine the curricula as offered in the mining schools, to evaluate their engineering content, and to propose minimum requirements for the degree of Geological Engineering in the mining industry. The curricula of eight institutions that offer the degree of B.S. in Geological Engineering or Mining Geology have been studied (Table 1). All except one of these schools are in or near mining districts and occur west of the Mississippi River. They are all state-supported institutions that have come into existence because of the state's need for technically trained men. A graduate from .a mining school is called upon to perform many duties of a technical nature. His initial task may be to make a geological map of a mine or the surface above, but before the map is finished he may be asked to take over the responsibility of getting the ore "on top." And finally, he might find it essential to know how to mill the ore. Certainly this requires technically trained men and the mining schools are essentially the organizations to do the job. The departments of geology in these schools are training geological engineers. Field Of Geology If we were to accept the opinions of some writers, we would be forced to conclude that all geology departments offer only a "dilettante" variety of subjects.

The behavior of gas-storage reservoirs subject to water drive is investigated through analog simulation on an electronic differential analyzer. The simulation technique developed on an LM-10 computer permits the prediction of reservoir volume or pressure resulting from the movement of water in the surrounding aquifer. The method developed on the analog computer consists of setting up an appropriate transfer-function circuit and feeding the arbitrary time-varying boundary conditions as an input signal. The input may be specified as gas reservoir pressure, pore volume or the water flux. Several cases studied include an isolated gas reservoir on a limited aquifer, interference among three reservoirs adjacent to a common aquifer and the growth of gas-storage volume on an aquifer. It is concluded that the method developed on an electronic differential analyzer provides an excellent technique to simulate and investigate the behavior of gas reservoirs subject to water drive. The agreement between the reservoir performance as predicted from the simulation technique and as measured from actual field data is found to be better than the range usually encountered in predicting water-drive behavior. INTRODUCTION It is generally known that some gas-storage reservoirs are located on top of blanket sands of large extent, saturated with brine called aquifers. Because the volume of the body of water associated with aquifers is usually very large and water is compressible, the cyclic pressure variations encountered in normal storage service inevitably cause unsteady, compressible flow conditions in the adjacent aquifers. The solution to radial diffusivity equation for a limited aquifer for constant terminal conditions has been know111 since the early 1930's. The solution for the constant terminal conditions for an infinite aquifer was puhlished in 1949.2 The proldem of handling the unsteady flow of water through a porous medium with time-varying boundary conditions has been studied by many investigators through the use of graphical,3 digital4 computing techniques or on an R-C type of electrical analog called a reservoir analyzer.5 The digital computer performs a series of arithmetic calculations to superimpose the solutions of constant terminal conditions, while the R-C type of analyzer permits the simulation of the continuous medium by means of "lumped-cell" electrical resistance and capacitance elements based on finite-difference approximations. The graphical method is based on the convolution integral solution of the partial differential equalion. The purpose of the present study was to simulate the behavior of an aquifer on a general-purpose, electronic differential analyzer to obtain the influx of water or the change in pressure at the reservoir continuous1r and quickly. The use of the electronic differential analyzer was based on well known solutions for the constant terminal conditions already available in the literature.2,6-8 THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENT MODEL. The gas reservoir (R) is described in relation to an aquifer in Fig. 1. The permeability and porosity of an aquifer sand, the viscosity of the brine, and the compressibility of the brine and the formation are assumed to be constant. It further is assumed that the blanket sand is not thick enough to give appreciable vertical pressure distribution. The model in consideration is circular with radial geometry. The heat treatment of the bronze composed of 88 per cent. copper, 10 per cent. tin, and 2 per cent. zinc, has been investigated by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose,' and also by the U. S. Bureau of Standards.2 The results obtained by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose on dry-sand castings subjected to reheating followed by air cooling, or by quenching in water, are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The values for tensile strength have been converted from tons per square inch to pounds per square inch. Figs. 3 and 4, have been plotted from values obtained by the Bureau of Standards on material of the same composition and treatment. Both investigations show that the ductility of the cast bronze is improved by heating to 700' C. and cooling in air, the strength not being impaired by this treatment. They are not in agreement, howevcr, as to the effect of quenching, Messrs. Primrose reporting a decrease, and the Bureau of Standards an increase, in both strength and ductility when the cast bronze is heated to 600' or 700' C. and quenched. THE township of Cloncurry is situated in the northwestern part of Queensland, about latitude S. 20° 42' 53" and longitude E: 140° 30' 25". Townsville is the port through which all the trade passes and is about 470 miles east-northeast of Cloncurry township. The Cloncurry copper district covers an area about 200 miles long by 40 miles wide. Unfortunately the mines are very scattered over this area, there being no large groups of mines. Mount Elliott mine is situated about 70 miles south from the township of Cloncurry, and Mount Oxide mine about 150 miles north of Cloncurry. The district has been known for the last 35 years, and in the early stages a large amount of capital was expended with little to show for it; but within the last four years the railway has been extended from Townsville to Mount Elliott and about 40 miles north of Cloncurry, which has made possible the treatment of the ores of the mines on this extension. The Mount Elliott company within the last few years has smelted and converted on its mine 169,688 tons. of ore for 20,554 tons of blister copper, containing 20,377 tons of copper, 35,642 oz. of gold and 28,841 oz. of silver, at a cost of about £33 per ton of blister copper, f.o.b. Townsville. This cost included all ' development, wages, salaries, general management, office, agency, legal expenses, freight, etc. The gold and silver contents would practically pay for freight to Europe, refining, realization charges, etc. The costs of supplies are as follows: Firewood 15s., coke, 75s., mine timber, 54s., and coal, 60s. per long ton; explosives: dynamite and gelignite, 50s. and blasting gelatine, 65s. 6d. per case.

The nature and comparative features of anthracite and bituminous coals have been discussed by the writer in two previous papers.' Although this paper is offered as a further contribution to the subject, it seems desirable at the outset to repeat some of the descriptive matter of the early works in order to show the actual connection between various constituents of both coals and the new photomicrographs and other physical and chemical properties. Structure of Anthracite and Bituminous Coals A lump of bituminous coal (Fig. 1) is readily seen to be composed of layers differing from one another in texture, luster and thickness. There are, in general, three kinds of layers, although only two are usually seen. One is deep black, very compact, and has a bright luster; another is grayish black, has a duller luster and is less compact; the third is black, dull and porous in appearance, but because of its thinness is not often seen except on parting surfaces. This last material is charcoal. American students of coal morphology use the names anthraxylon, attritus, and fusain to designate these three constituents of laminated coal. Anthraxylon refers to the brightest bands, attritus to the duller layers, and fusain to the charcoal. Close examination of a lump of bituminous coal shows the brightest deep black layers to be embedded in the duller grayish black laminae. These deep black layers are lens-shaped and vary in thickness from thin sheets to over half an inch. They are often so continuous through the lump that their tapering terminae are not noticeable. On careful examination the duller grayish black laminae (Fig. 7) are seen to contain many very thin sheets of this very bright black material. The charcoal

One of the most important questions that arises in ore estimation can be stated as follows: What is the error when one extends the grade of a sample to a certain volume? The theory of regionalized variables, with the concept of extension variance, provides a response to that crucial question for any kind of sample extended to any volume. For the usual "extensions" encountered in current mining practice, some simple results can be derived from that theory which was initiated by Dr. G. Matheron. These results have been applied to a stratiform lead-zinc deposit for which several estimations of grade, tonnage and related precision have been made for a series of grid sizes such as might be used in a progressive exploration program.

Discussion of the paper of SAMUEL S. WYER, presented at the New York meeting February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 263 to 279. DAVID T. DAY, Washington, D. C.-I would like to ask whether the court decisions quoted in the paper are general, or do they represent one side of the case; if so, are there any decisions that represent more than one side of the case? Are they of general application, or do they affect only one side? Also, what is the difference between a pump and a compressor from the standpoint of the natural-gas industry? I notice stress is laid on the word "pump" in. connection with some of the legal decisions, and then it is stated. that they must not pump or compress above 300 lb. The question is, is a pump a compressor and a compressor a pump, under certain conditions? SAMUEL S. WYER, Columbus, Ohio.-Answering the first question, I will say that the decisions cover both sides of the case very thoroughly, and are uniformly on the side that a company is justified in the use of gas compressors; in other words, there are no decisions holding it to be illegal to use gas compressors, with the exception noted in Indiana, Kansas, and Oklahoma where you cannot go below atmospheric pressure. In regard to the second question, I think the engineers and the gas operators themselves are responsible for the confusion. It is because the use of the term "pump" is almost universal, and so many people have obtained the idea that the primary function of a gas compressor is to pump air into the gas, in order to increase the consumers' gas bills. I appreciate that it is very hard to draw a clear line of demarcation. between a pump and a compressor. The distinction I have always made myself, and which I think is a logical one, is that you do not get the pumping action until you get below atmospheric pressure. As far as the compression end is concerned, there is only one State, namely, Indiana, that has any statutory limitation with regard to how high the pressure may be increased in order to put the gas into the transmission lines. The State law in Indiana limits the maximum pressure to 300 lb. per square inch.
