FOR many years the disk-type and cloth-covered drum filters have found widest application in liquid-solids separation, which uses continuous filters. The disk type is less expensive, occupies less floor space per square foot of filtration area, and requires negligible down time for filter media changing. However, because filter cloth is billowed out by the blowback in the cake discharge, it is very short-lived if the scraper blades are set too close. Consequently cake weight is very important in assisting cake discharge, which normally necessitates a minimum cake thickness of 3/8 to ½ in. Also, the vertical position of the disks eliminates the possibility of efficient cake washing for removal of soluble values. The disk-type filter is generally limited, therefore, to applications that require no cake washing and form relatively thick cakes within the normal range of filter cycle times. The conventional cloth-covered drum filter is a more flexible unit, permitting wider variation in the percentage of cycle time devoted to cake formation, dewatering, or washing, as required by the application. Thinner filter cakes can be discharged because a horizontal line across the filter medium at the location of the scraper blade is equidistant from the edge of the blade at all points. The scraper blade therefore may be set a short distance from the filter medium or, where wire winding is not used, a floating scraper can be utilized so that the contour of the cloth can be followed. The drum filter is generally employed when there are difficult filtering slurries with resultant thin cakes or when cake washing to recover soluble values must be practiced. Difficulties sometimes encountered in continuous filter operation can be summarized in the following four categories: 1) Low filtration and/or washing rates due to blinding of the filter medium. 2) Poor cake discharge resulting from sticky cakes, filter medium blinding, or too thin a cake for the particular type of filter. 3) High filter media costs caused by short life and frequent down times for cloth changing. This results from blinding or from abrasion by the scraper blade when cakes are thin. 4) Blowback of filtrate at cake discharge because not enough air passes through the cake to purge the drainage area and filtrate lines during dewatering. To reduce or eliminate blinding tendencies several modifications have been tried, for example, cover-cleaning showers, blowback under the feed slurry, and snap-blow cake discharge. In many cases, however, this simply retards the rate of blinding, since the filter medium is kept clean at its outer surface only by these methods. As blinding usually occurs within or on the back of the medium, the operator is finally forced either to remove the cloth and scrub the medium intensively with a cleaning solution or acid-rinse it on the filter—all resulting in down time, short cloth life, and additional costs.

An equation derived from first-order kinetics and accounting for return from froth to pulp has correlated continuous flotation data. The concentration of floatable material in the pulp can be altered either by changing the feed concentration or the feed rate. The latter does not affect the flotation rate constant, the froth to pulp return constant, and the concentration of non-floatable material in both the pulp and concentrate. Both the return constant and the concentration of non-floatable material in the pulp are directly proportional to the feed concentration, while the concentration of non-floatable material in the concentrate is related to the feed concentration. The investigation of the froth flotation process by continuous test methods, previously used by Brown and smith,1 Jowett and Safvi2 and Jowett and West,3 is being continued. Recent tests, primarily concerned with flotation cell design, have yielded kinetic data suitable for testing an equation proposed by Arbiter and Harris4 which postulates that a flotation process is defined by two rate constants: 1) the rate constant for mass transfer from pulp to froth. Previous workers have regarded this as the flotation rate constant. 2) the rate constant for mass transfer from froth to pulp, which has previously been ignored. THEORY Under continuous flow conditions at the steady state in Fig. 1 the equation developed4 is Symbols are defined in Table I. In this paper it is the author's intention to show the extent and character of foreign ores now known to be available; these deposits may be in active production or held in reserve until economic conditions may make them active. He hopes to show the relation existing between these ores and the American supply, and which of the former are now producing or will in turn come into production when our better ores have been exhausted. This phase of this discussion must of necessity include some data as to the present rate of consumption and a study of the changes we may expect here and abroad in the general steel trade and its sources of supply in raw materials. It is obvious that the occurrence of coal, ore and limestone in relation to one another and the proximity of a market are the elements in control of this feature of the problem. If the foregoing situation is favorable, all the other questions may be solved, for it is clear that with proper basic conditions finance, labor and operations will fall in line. We present a short outline of the present methods of carrying on the foreign iron ore trade, believing that it is of general interest in comparison with our own highly specialized methods, and that with the exhaustion of our better ores we will be compelled to seek a part of our supply abroad. A partial list of iron ores, with incomplete analyses (Table I), is added, to give a better understanding of the general situation and explain to some extent the reason for things being as they are in the iron and steel trade of the world and to help in bringing this paper to an informing conclusion. The question of the world supply of iron ores has been a subject for study on the part of geologists and engineers for many years, and found its best results in the Eleventh International Geological Congress, appropriately held at Stockholm, Sweden, in 1910. The proceedings are published in two volumes and are undoubtedly the best records available on this subject at the date of publication. It should be borne in mind, however, that much has happened in the 20 years since these figures were assembled. There is just as much known ore at present as at that time, minus the quantity consumed, plus newly discovered reserves. The thermite process, now approximately 80 years old, has heretofore been practiced in ceramic vessels. This paper outlines the successful production of several million pounds of alloy produced in zuater-cooled copper vessels. THE high temperatures necessary to produce fluid high-alumina slags have probably discouraged earlier workers from attempting to utilize water-cooled vessels. The following is a report of the successful application of this method, together with a report of the physical and chemical problems which had to be solved to make the process practical. About 1955, when Reading Alloys was more concerned with the production of ferrotungsten than with most other types of alloys, it was found to be exceedingly difficult to predict the reaction rate that one would experience from one tungsten ore to another . This difficulty was increased for two reasons: the physical state of the ore as received was seldom uniform, and the size of the mass to be reduced is a very important factor in developing the proper mix for the final reaction rate and temperature. For example, the reduction of ferric oxide with aluminum would theoretically produce temperatures of about 2600°C, and, in spite of the losses due to radiation, the energy is quite sufficient to produce a very fluid slag and iron effecting a very clean separation. On the other hand, the reduction of ferrous oxide with aluminum, while it is not as energetic as the first reaction, nevertheless should give temperatures above 2000"C, which should cause separation of alumina and iron, but, in practice, this is not the case and good fluid slag is not obtained. The heat of reaction, calculated from the thermo-dynamic heats of formation of the constituents of the reaction, offers a convenient guide to the feasibility of a thermite reaction. Thus, the values listed in Table I can be used as an approximate guide for estimating the results which may be expected in the reduction of various oxides and combinations of oxides using aluminum as the reducing agent. As a generalization, those reactions releasing approximately 600 cal per g of total mass represent the lower limit at which to expect separation of slag and metal. On the other hand, those reactions which release 1100 to 1200 cal per g are too violent to be used successfully without the addition of considerable inert material, such as lime, fluorspar, and so forth. Reaction rate is also a very important factor. This, of course, is governed very largely by the sizing and intermingling of the oxidant and reductant and by the starting temperature of the reactants. This is why those figures shown in Table I can only be a general guide. Further, it must be understood, that by adding powerful oxidizing agents, such as nitrates, chlorates or metallic oxides, such as molybdenum trioxide or chromium trioxide, certain problems respecting low temperatures are not necessarily solved. This is true in the addition of oxidants, such as sodium chlorate. By adding too high a concentration of sodium chlorate as a booster for a particular reduction, explosions are generated. Generally, they are of an intermittent type so as to give a Roman Candle effect to the reduction itself; with each surge resulting from a minor explosion more and more material is thrown

In 1962, minerals beneficiation showed definite signs of coming out of the doldrums into which it has drifted after the uranium boom. Demand by steelmakers for high-grade iron pellets has created the need for concentrating plants to upgrade specular hematite by spiral concentration or flotation and magnetites by magnetic means and flotation. According to a paper given at the AMC annual meeting by C. S. Arms of Pickands Mather, "the shipment of pellets, started in the mid-1950's, has increased to 17.6 million tons in 1961 from North American operations. Many plants already underway will raise this production to about 42 million tons by 1965. This will be a very sizeable percentage of the total iron ore production contemplated by that date." Iron ore concentration methods are gradually raising the assay of pellets into the 65 to 69% Fe range and lowering silica to the 4 to 7% range. Quebec Cartier's Lac Jeannine concentrator went into operation in late 1961 and all grinding units were running by 1962. The Iron Ore Co. of Canada's new Carol Lake plant was started in mid-1962.

DURING the last several years, the U-Zr system has been studied at many laboratories as one of the research programs sponsored by the Atomic Energy Commission. The equilibria in part of this system have been difficult to determine, although the phase diagram from 0 to 60 atomic pct Zr has been established with reasonable certainty. Existing diagrams of the system vary appreciably beyond 60 atomic pct Zr, particularly with regard to the existence of an intermediate phase. Most existing diagrams show a transformation or reaction horizontal near 600°C. In 1955, a collection of uranium phase diagrams' was prepared at the Battelle Memorial Institute and the U-Zr diagram in that collection contained a questionable region in the vicinity of 60 to 80 atomic pct Zr. Summer-Smith" has published a phase diagram of the system that shows no intermediate phase. Summer-Smith did his work with powders and found only the uranium and zirconium eutectoid mixture from X-ray patterns of material annealed below 600°C. Mueller3 at Argonne National Laboratory did similar work with filings, and he found that initially there was a pattern of an intermediate phase, but on long-time annealing

IN conducting the manufacture of extruded brass rods and brass forgings it has been noticed that there is considerable variation in the physical properties, particularly the machinability of different rods and forgings, even though the composition, working temperatures and method of manufacture remain the same. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to establish the cause and extent of this variation, and also to determine whether variations in composition within certain defined limits influence hardness and machinability to any marked degree. The writer believes that this variation probably is due to the variation in grain size of the metal, therefore the microstructure of several compositions under various conditions of working were examined in an effort to establish this as a fact.

THE use of filling in mines is less common in the United States than it is in Europe, where in some places it is required by law. In most cases the filling is placed by hand, and the material used for this purpose is the waste from development and that sorted from the ore in the stopes. When these sources provide an insufficient supply, additional rock must be quarried on surface or mined underground, or some other material :st be used. In different parts of the world sand, clay, gravel, culm, nulated slag, mill tailings, and even ashes, have been used as filling material in place of or in conjunction with rock. Of all the materials used for filling the best is probably clean sand. Gravel, finely crushed rock, granulated slag and coarse mill tailings are almost as good, and the methods used for placing and confining sand will apply equally well to any of these. The advantages of sand are its comparatively slight compressibility and the ease, economy and convenience with which it may be placed. On account of the voids, which necessarily occur in fills made of coarse waste, such fills will compress 10 to 25 per cent before they develop their full strength, whereas clean sand seldom compresses more than 5 per cent. Sand is especially desirable when practically complete filling is required, and sand derived from mill tailings, especially when not thoroughly cleaned, has been remarkably effective in sealing off and extinguishing mine fires. When natural sand is available on surface, or when it can be obtained from the mill tailings or tailings dump, the cost of using this material for fill will probably be considerably less than that of rock. In this paper it is not proposed to discuss all methods of filling, butt to describe some of the methods used for placing sand fill and to make a brief comparison of their merits.

The primary recrystallization textures of 11 single crystals cold rolled 70 pct were determined. The effect of crystal orientation on recrystallization behavior was investigated also and found to be large. An exception was found to the relationship that strong components of the recrystolliza-tion texture are rotated from the cold rolled texture by 30° about <110> axes, but generally this relationship was found to hold quite well. Evidence supporting oriented nucleotion was found and discussed in terms of probable active slip systems and <110> edge dislocations. THE present paper is one of a series&apos;.&apos; on recrys-tallization phenomena in cold rolled 31/4 Si-Fe single crystals and is mainly concerned with the textures produced on recrystallizing from stable end orientations. Data for the cold rolled textures of the crystals used have been reported by Koh and Dunn." Their results showed that the sharpness of the cold rolled textures varied throughout the range of stable end orientations and that the tendency to re-crystallize was related to the sharpness of the cold rolled texture, wherein the rate of recrystallization increased and the size of recrystallization grains decreased with decreasing sharpness of the cold rolled texture. In the project under consideration the cold rolled crystals involved a range of initial orientations that, together with those studied earlier,&apos; provide information on several points. The first point is whether the recrystallization texture from a (111) [112] cold rolled texture, a stable end orientation that can be approached from different directions, correlates in any way with the initial orientation before cold rolling, or whether the recrystallization texture is entirely determined by the observable features of the cold rolled texture. The second point involves a preliminary study to see if the main components of the recrystallization textures correlate with the most probable active slip systems. The third point is to determine what effect departure from slip on one slip system has on the tendency to recrystallize. Experimental Procedure Nine specimens from a previous investigation and two additional ones from thicker stock (lot D) but of similar composition to the others were used in the present work. The latter two crystals, like the nine, were cold rolled to a reduction in thickness of 70 pct and the amount of widening was determined. Depending on their primary recrystallization behavior, the cold rolled crystals were given short or long anneals at temperatures of 980°C or higher. Table I summarizes the data on initial orientations, the textures obtained by cold rolling, and the anneals given to provide samples for the present work. Fine grained specimens were thinned to 0.002 in. thickness and placed in an integrating specimen holder. Chart recordings using a transmission X-ray method and MoKa radiation were obtained for diffraction from (110) planes. This method,&apos;,3 which gives data for all of the pole figure except a central region of 30" radius, proved sufficient to give generally five, and sometimes six, of the six possible pole concentration areas of any one component of the texture. These data, therefore, were generally adequate for a positive identification of each component present. The first texture obtained for specimen B-2 was poorly defined because of too coarse a grain structure and therefore too few crystals in each component for satisfactory X-ray reflections. The same

ONE year ago, that is in January, 1923, there had not been constructed a single oil-storage tank of 55,000-bbl. or more capacity with a completely electric welded roof and bottom. Today, there are at least fifty 80,000-bbl. storage tanks completed, or nearing completion, on which both the roofs and the bottoms are electric welded. All of the following data and conclusions were obtained from observations made during the welding of tanks by the Welding Engineering Co. at Texas City, Tex., and Tonkawa and Burbank, Okla. As far as can be determined, the first electric welding on large tankage was completed in May, 1922. At that time the Empire Companies of Bartlesville, Okla., discovered a badly leaking bottom in a 55,000-bbl. tank at El Dorado, Kans. They had considered concreting this bottom, but because of the much smaller cost, decided to try electric welding; so a- contract was given the Welding Engineering Co. of Bartlesville, Okla. In this instance, no new sheets were added, the bottom being repaired by electric welding of all seams and rivets, Fig. 1. In some places where the original rivets were missing, the holes were filled by welding; patch plates were also added at certain badly worn spots. The income of the Institute is derived mainly from dues, advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization.

THE classical papers on contact metasomatic deposits by Lindgren on the Clifton-Morenci district,&apos; by Barrell on Marysville, Mont.,&apos; and by Gold-schmitt on the Oslo district, Norway,&apos; laid the foundation for understanding of the importance of separating the metamorphic process from the subsequent metasomatic stage. Knopf&apos; made a big step forward by recognizing that sulfide ore minerals are invariably younger than silicates and by further stressing the importance of structural control" in ore finding. Some years later Harrison Schmitt" fought the idea that contact metasomatic deposits are erratic, irregular, bunchy, economically marginal, and of small size, concluding that these descriptions have little factual basis. He emphasized the importance of detail mapping and careful geological study as fundamental requirements for a better understanding of these deposits. This article presents a comparative description of the structural features at the Magistral, Antamina, Morococha, Vilca, Ferrobamba, Katanga (Quibio), Tintaya, and Huarca contact deposits (Fig. 1). Further, it will describe how these structural features controlled the emplacement of the intrusives, their shape, distribution of metamorphic and metasomatic halos, and sulfide deposition in post-skarn structural channelways. Finally, the modifications introduced by a superimposed hydrothermal stage recognized at some localities will be discussed. Primary exploration and careful sampling of recognized structural targets were instrumental in outlining the copper ore potential at the Antamina and Tintaya districts, thus proving the benefits and reward of careful geological examinations in this type of deposit. The Magistral District: This district lies in the Province of Pallasca, Department of Ancash, in northern Peru, at 8o 16&apos; S and 77" 47&apos; W. High to medium grade copper orebodies in garnetite, bordering a quartz monzonite stock, are exposed at the bottom of a glaciated valley in the western slope of the Andes at 4250 m (14,000 ft)* elevation.

An empirical equation for the prediction of the viscosity of several pure paraffin hydrocarbons and nitrogen is presented. It involves temperature, pressure and six constants of the material, and it applies reliably to both liquids and gases. The equation is similar in form to van der Waal&apos;s equation of state. For the paraffin hydrocarbons methane through r-hexane and nitrogen, an average absolute deviation of 1.9 percent was obtained on 1,006 data points described in the literature by 14 authors. When this equation is extended to complex, liquid hydrocarbon mixtures, a correlation was obtained with an average absolute deviation of 9.9 percent. INTRODUCTION Equations describing the flow of gas and liquid through porous media contain the viscosity coefficient of the fluid. If other pertinent variables remain constant, the volume rate of flow is inversely proportional to this coefficient. In dealing with condensate fluids and volatile oils, however, the compositional effects resulting from changing pressure materially affect the viscosity. The effect of compositional changes also may be significant in certain secondary recovery or pressure maintenance processes, notably miscible displacement or gas injection. Early attempts to describe the performance of reservoirs utilized a volumetric material balance method wherein gas and liquid in the reservoir were identified as produced gas and liquid at the surface. This method of analysis proved adequate for reservoirs at moderate temperature and pressure that contained gas with moderately low amounts of condensable materials. The volumetric material balance procedures for "black oil" reservoirs leave much to be desired when applied to condensate and volatile oil reservoirs because phase behavior and compositional changes are relatively more important in these cases. The alternative is a compositional material balance, which in turn, requires a correlation of properties of the reservoir fluid with composition. This paper supplies this correlation in regard to viscosity, for reservoir crude oils. REVIEW OF LITERATURE The literature contains many empirical equations describing the effects of composition, temperature and pressure on the viscosities of pure liquids and binary liquid mixtures. However, the applicability of a majority of these equations is limited to very low pressures and to a small number of systems. Most of them, when applied to complex hydrocarbon systems, are of little value. The lack of utility of the majority of equations results from the fact that they were developed to show the separate effect of temperature, pressure or composition on viscosity, but not to predict the viscosity as a function of all three variables. And with the few exceptions noted below, they were developed to apply to much simpler systems than hydrocarbon mixtures. Eakin1 developed an equation for the viscosity of pure light hydrocarbons applicable in the gas, liquid and dense fluid regions, and in its most general form is written as µ - µo =A(ebP - e-cpk) The pure component viscosity at atmospheric pressure and temperature T, µo, was calculated using the Sutherland equation: µo = BT3/2/T + S The constants in Eakin&apos;s equation permitted the term e-CPk to become quite small at high densities (above 0.215 gm/cc), and the general equation would simplify to

In the Santa Eulalia mining district, Chihuahua, Mexico, the main mineral zone occurs in a gently warped dome with simple associated structures and contains orebodies distributed through a vertical range of over 900 m. The stratigraphy of 1945 m of geologic column is described and an abrupt shrinkage is documented in the volume of limestones immediately associated with large orebodies. Termed collapse, this shrinkage occurred during the course of mineralization. Contacts of limestone with igneous sills, and 366 m of fossiliferous limestone beds, particularly the main fossil bed, have been important localizers of ore-bodies. Up-dip gravitational controls may have been important. Fractures have exerted only local controls and over short distances. Thrust zones have displaced diabase sills and in turn have been intruded by upper members of a group of rhyolite porphyry sills. Mineralizers were related to the rhyolite porphyry, and ore has been introduced to the limestone where certain sills lie between the displaced segments of diabase and have been cut by north-south fissures. Speculations are raised that fields of unreleased strain may have influenced orebody locations; the district&apos;s zoning pattern may be a reflection of the filtering effects of large volumes of limestone; and that metal-rich brines mobilized by or incorporated within the invading porphyry might be the source of the mineralizers. PRODUCTION AND LOCATION The Santa Eulalia district has a production record approaching or exceeding 35 million tons of silver-lead-zinc ore from replacement bodies in limestone. In operation since the first years of the 17001s, production has been confined to two intensely mineralized areas separated by 2 km of barren limestone, the West Camp and the East Camp. Probably 50% has been mined since 1908, with over 90% from the West Camp. The West Camp, exploited through a vertical depth of 1945 m and now approaching exhaustion, is the subject of this paper. The district lies in the northern part of the Santa Eulalia Mountains in central Chihuahua in northern Mexico, 400 km south of El Paso, Texas, and 22 km southeast of Chihuahua City. Dominating the northern part of the range is the Cerro de Santa Eulalia, a broad rolling upland which contains the district&apos;s West and East Camps. The West Camp, on the west side of the range, centers around the village of Santo Domingo, which is 2 km northeast of the Real de Santa Eulalia (Fig. 1). REGIONAL GEOLOGY Thick-bedded middle Cretaceous limestones, probably Aurora, form the great bulk of the Cerro de Santa Eulalia. Pilot flooding is one method of evaluating a proposed secondary recovery project. However, the amount and rate of oil recovery from an unconfined pilot area is not usually the same as from an equal area in a large-scale flood. This is true because fluids are free to move across the boundary of a pilot area. The result is that some of the oil produced in a pilot flood may come from outside the designated area and some of the displaced oil may leave the pilot area completely. This paper presents the results of fluid-flow model studies on a five-spot pilot flood. Mobility ratios between 0.1 and to have been studied. The effects of changing the ratio of injection to withdrawal rates are shown. INTRODUCTION A small-scale field test, or pilot flood, is an accepted method for evaluating the applicability of a secondary recovery operation and the economic potential of that operation for a reservoir. The pilot flood is carried on in the same manner, with the same injected materials and at the same pressures as would be used were the secondary recovery program to be expanded to a larger area of the field or to the entire field. If the reservoir fluid and reservoir rock properties are the same in the pilot area as in the rest of the reservoir, the production, injection and other pertinent data associated with the pilot test will represent and measure what should be expected from a full-scale development of this secondary recovery program. There is one major exception which, unfortunately, has been overlooked by many and which has been awaiting quantitative definition. This is the sweep-out pattern the reservoir engineer must use in interpreting the pilot flood and in extrapolating it to the full-scale development. The sweep-out area in a pilot flood is not contained within the five-spot pattern. Further, there is oil flow into and/or out of the five-spot during a pilot test. Thus, production data from pilots must be interpreted with this different flow system and sweep pattern in mind. We have studied the sweep-out pattern that will exist for some conditions of operation of pilot flooding a single five-spot (four injection wells and one producer). In our study, reported here, we have assumed that the reservoir is relatively homogeneous and of uniform thickness in the pilot area. The results of this study en-able the engineer to predict the recovery, injection requirements and project life for a full-scale operation from the pilot flooding data. The effects of various injection to withdrawal-rate ratios and mobility ratios in a relatively gas-free (10 per cent pore volume or less) system are shown. Experimental Method The technique used in this study was the same as that for the X-ray shadowgraph studies of sweep-out pattern efficiencies.&apos; The model of the pilot and surrounding area was made from a uniform packing of round-grain sand consolidated with an epoxy resin. The pjPocesses of polygonization and subgrain growth were followed in slightly stretched 99.99 pct A1 single crystals heated for cumulative times at 400°, 500°, and 600°C. Changes in sub-grain size and boundary angle were determined from measurements on X-ray micrographs. CAHN1, 2 studied polygonization in stretched and heated aluminum single crystals of 99.99 pct A1 using various techniques, including etch pits, Laue patterns, and a slight restretching of heated specimens to reveal small changes in lattice orientation by the direction of new slip lines. He found that kink bands, which had well-defined boundaries lying in a plane perpendicular to the slip direction (at least in the early stages of deformation), formed during stretching. Also, he noted that bending occurred about the <211> axis lying in the (111) slip plane perpendicular to the <110> slip direction. His studies of polygonization were largely confined to the kink bands rather than to the weakly bent matrix regions between bands. The minimum temperature required to bring about polygonization was established at about 450 "C. Guinier and Tenevin used a focusing Laue X-ray diffraction technique to study polygonization in aluminum single-crystal specimens of 99.99 pct purity. Stretching the crystals 5 pct in tension caused a widening of the focused Laue spots. After heating for 4 hr at 450°C, their method revealed no change in the specimen. Above 450°C polygonization was detected and further annealing near 600°C led to subgrain growth. They concluded that the orientation of the crystal relative to the axis of deformation had no marked effect on polygonization. Gay and Honey-combe4 using an X-ray microbeam technique found that polygonization did not occur in a stretched aluminum crystal heated at 250oC, although some decrease in the yield strength occurred. The properties of some heavy liquids which can be used in sink-float separations are discussed with major emphasis being given to the halogenated hydrocarbons. Data are presented on density, viscosity, thermal characteristics and the effects of moisture and temperature on the corrosiveness of the liquids towards various materials of construction. The toxicity of these materials, the hazards involved in handling them, and the procedures for handling them safely are also discussed. True liquids have certain advantages over colloidal suspensions for sink-float separation of minerals which makes their use especially advantageous when close separations, fine particle sizes or water-soluble minerals are to be treated. For best separating results, the medium should have an easily controlled, uniform, stable density. Here, true liquids have the advantages of allowing closer control of density and of not requiring agitation to maintain a uniform den- sity in the equipment. Low viscosities are desired in a separating liquid so that rapid separations of fine material can be made. Many liquids have lower viscosities than the colloidal suspensions at operating gravities of 1.4 to 5.0. For economic reasons and to prevent contamination of the product, the separating medium must be easily and completely removed from the ore. Normally, true liquids must be more completely removed than the cheaper suspensions and thus cause more problems in this area. The fact that the medium should not react with the minerals, air, water or the common materials of construction limits the choice of liquids which can be used, but many are available which are sufficiently stable. A more serious objection to the use of true liquids is that many of them present a toxic hazard to operating personnel and users of the product. Most true liquids are toxic to some extent, but modem knowledge of toxicity allows us to recognize the hazards inherent in handling them and enables us to design around them. Three types of true liquids are available for this use: 1) Halogenated hydrocarbons cover the gravity range from 1.2 to 3.3. They are generally more volatile and less viscous than the other liquids.

Any discussion of outside support to Latin American mineral industries must concede at once the pre-eminent role of U. S. industry and business. American capital has developed the great copper resources of Chile and Peru, the lead-zinc of Peru and Mexico, the bauxite of Surinam and Jamaica, the petroleum and iron ore of Venezuela. American consumers have provided the market for their products. U. S. companies operating south of the border have trained Latin American geologists, engineers, chemists, and skilled labor—including metal, mineral, and fuel technicians—to new and greater competence. The industrial demands of World War II drastically altered world economics and concepts of U. S. foreign mineral requirements. In this country discovery of vital mineral resources fell far behind the alarming depletion rates, and there was new appreciation of the actual and potential importance of the world&apos;s less extensively explored areas. During the war and afterward, the task of supplying the nation&apos;s mineral requirements became greater than private industry could carry alone, and the Government assumed a position of continuing support. In Latin America, as elsewhere, this support applies in three categories: banking, procurement, and technical assistance. The first two are now generally accepted as necessary Government functions; the third has often been misunderstood and misinterpreted, although it has given rise to legitimate controversy. There have been major accomplishments in all three categories, as well as some errors of judgment. Since the beginning of World War 11, U. S. Government financing, procurement, and technical assistance have been applied on a large scale to a wide range of commodities and services throughout the free world. The present discussion—under the separate headings mentioned—will concern only the support related to a single industrial group in a single geographic area. During the War Federal banking was conducted on an emergency scale by temporary agencies created to meet the abnormal circumstances. Unfortunately, there are no readily available data on these activities that would permit evaluating loans and credits extended for mineral projects in Latin America. The only agency operating in this field since World War II is the Export-Import Bank, under its own authority and to some extent from credits authorized by the Office of Defense Mobilization. The Bank can offer more capital—on more favorable terms—than is available from most Latin American banks, and its staff of engineers evidently can appraise loan applications more favorably than commercial banks in this country are willing to do. The risks seem to be justified, as defaults have been well under 1 pct of total loans. From V-J day 1945 to the end of 1957, mineral loans to Latin America have been authorized for projects totaling $541.63 million in eight countries. In order of magnitude of credits, they have been made to Brazil, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Guatemala, and Bolivia. In order of magnitude by industries. they are for development and expansion of steel mills, copper, manganese, nitrate plants, iron ore, zinc plants, sulfur plants, cement plants, tungsten, coal, and lead. Loan Distribution: By far the largest loans have been $307.9 million for iron and steel projects in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, and Peru: $100.4 for developing the great low-grade copper deposits of southern Peru; and $55.3 million for developing manganese deposits in the Territory of Amapa, Brazil. Others range from $20.8 million for a zinc smelter in central Peru to $19 thousand for iron-mine trucking equipment in Chile. It has been noted that 59 pct of the loans have been to foreign companies, 14 pct to companies of mixed foreign and American capital, and 27 pct to American mining companies.
