"As conventional, base or precious metal ores are being depleted worldwide, the mining industry is being faced with an increasing exploitation of arsenical sulfidic ores. Enargite is a common example. The downstream processing of these ores poses several problems ranging from high smelter penalties to finding economical and environmentally acceptable means of disposing of the arsenic. Several hydrometallurgical processes have been proposed for extracting arsenic from enargite concentrates, notably using alkaline sulphide leaching (ASL). However, few alternatives exist for removing the arsenic from solution and stabilizing it in an approach that is both economical and environmentally acceptable.Dundee Sustainable Technologies (“DST”) has developed a technology for the sequestration of arsenic by vitrification. Originally optimized to cost-effectively stabilize arsenic trioxide (As2O3), DST has shown that vitrification could be successfully extended to the stabilization of other arsenical products, such as calcium arsenate (Ca3(AsO4)2) and sodium arsenate (Na3AsO4). In this paper, the vitrification of arsenic in the context of an enargite leaching was newly explored and demonstrated successfully.Two processing routes are being proposed by DST for the removal of arsenic from enargite concentrates and their stabilization by vitrification. In one route, arsenic is extracted by ASL and is then precipitated under atmospheric conditions and with minimal use of reagents and time. The resulting precipitate is an unstable hydrated ferric arsenate (FeAsO4•2H2O) that is then vitrified in a non-dilutive method, significantly increasing the stability of arsenic and meeting the TCLP guideline. Unlike is required for scorodite, stabilization was successfully achieved without concern for the crystallinity of the precipitate."

The genesis of Simrac?s technology transfer practices and future initiatives are discussed in this report. Simrac produces a relatively large volume of research-based health and safety outputs that must be communicated to its tripartite stakeholders and to other interested and affected parties. The wide spectrum and complexity of the transferables, together with the diversity of end-user needs and skills of the recipient population, necessitate customizing of technology transfer practices. In an attempt to optimize this process, a variety of practices are employed. Information is transferred by means of publication and dissemination of a variety of reports (paper, website and CD).Knowledge transfer is directed to health and safety practitioners by means of workshops, seminars, best practice booklets, handbooks and textbooks. Promotion of recently completed projects is directed at targeted recipients by means of project launches. Only isolated cases of piloting and implementation of technologies have been undertaken due to lack of resources and past organizational focus. It is anticipated that Simrac?s new organizational structure and management system, together with end-user involvement by industry champions, from project inception to implementation, will enhance the effectiveness of the technology transfer process.

Apatite Fission Track Analysis (AFTA) is a thermal history reconstruction tool that enables determination of magnitude and timing of maximum paleotemperature and paleo-geothermal gradient at the time of maximum paleotemperatures. From this information, the amount of section missing at major unconfornities can be estimated and incorporated into basin models. The Gippsland Basin has a number of distinct problems that can be tackled using AFTA. 1. The nature of the regional break between the Late Cretaceous-Tertiary Latrobe Group and the underlying Early Cretaceous Strzelecki Group. 2. The tectonic history of the basement flanking the basin and its effect on sediment composition. 3. The age of igneous activity in the basin, as typified by the widespread basaltic plugs and dykes intruding the outcropping Strzelecki Group. Major uplift and erosion within, and adjacent to, the early Cretaceous rift basin in the Mid-Cretaceous, at -95 to 100 Ma, initially constrained the Latrobe Group depositional area to the central deep of the Gippsland Basin and provided an elevated source of quartz-rich detritus for the Latrobe Group reservoirs. This is in marked contrast to the preceding period in the early Cretaceous when contemporaneous volcanism dominated as a source of detritus, producing quartz-poor lithic sandstones, in which a host of attendant diagenetic reactions destroyed their reservoir potential. Initial uplift and erosion of the volcanogenic Strzelecki Group also occurred in the mid-Cretaceous as revealed by a number of distinct inversion structures, and erosion of this material will have locally provided very poor quality sand to the basal Latrobe Group.

This report describes a study, conducted jointly by BethEnergy Mines Inc. and the Bureau of Mines, to assess the effects of longwall front abutment loading on various supplemental support materials utilized in a predriven recovery room. The purpose of the predriven recovery room is to reduce longwall equipment transfer time by eliminating the premove preparation associated with conventional recovery methods. In addition, the room provides a large area in which face salvage equipment can maneuver. Results of four recovery-room study areas show the progression and influence of the front abutment on the longwall panel and supports and their subsequent behavior. The best performance (i. e. the support that most facilitated recovery) of support material was achieved through the use of a concrete mixture which had a sand content of 35 percent by volume. The longwall transfer time was reduced by 30 percent which translates to a production advantage of 37,000 raw tons of coal per panel.

Multiple regression analysis was used to predict elemental concentrations of copper and nickel in soils from consideration of the concentration of these elements in vegetation in an ultrabasic complex in New Zealand. Regression equations were computed from sixteen independent variables involving concentrations of ten elements in plant ash, and various physical factors such as slope and altitude of the site, and height of the tree. One elemental and one physical variable were significant for nickel at the 90 per cent level of probability and five elemental and two physical variables were significant for copper at the same level. Use of the regression equations explained 32·5 per cent and 26·5 per cent of the variance in the respective relative accumulations (amount in plant divided by amount in soil) of copper and nickel.Predicted concentrations of copper and nickel in soils agreed more closely with the observed values in the soils than did the levels of these elements in plant ash.Although the results may specifically apply only to the test area, the principles should have universal application.

The mining industry has searched for a message that will resonate with the public while focusing on the industry’s positive contributions to society. So far, environmental groups remain unconvinced and the public is still largely uninformed. In the authors’ opinion, a number of recent events and experiences have converged to help shape a more effective public communication on mining’s important role. This article presents a perspective on coal’s role in sustaining society by anchoring the message in a transparent way, including a material flow analysis, that links coal’s impacts across a range of social and environmental aspects. Past and continuing image problems In her 1994 paper, Nancy Bingham, with Caterpillar, outlined what the public thought about mining. Based on extensive interviews, the following results were found: • The public believed mining harms the environment. • The public believed mining harms people in nearby communities. • The public believed mining exploits workers. • The public believed mining has little personal benefit to the individual.

Airblast overpressure levels can commonly be increased by up to 20 decibels (dBL) by the effects of meteorology, due to inversions and wind shear. Existing atmospheric refraction models can provide a good evaluation of the effects of meteorology, but have been limited in the accuracy of their outputs by the accuracy of the meteorological data that is available for input. This paper uses case histories from open-pit coal mine blasting in the Hunter Valley area of Australia to provide examples of increases in airblast due to inversions, wind shear, and a combination of both. It gives details of our experience of the accuracy with which predictions and assessments can be made using meteorological data of various levels of accuracy, and on the design buffer that is required to prevent the exceedence of airblast limits. The accuracy of meteorological prediction and assessment will shortly be improved by the use of sounding equipment that gives continuous measurements of temperature and wind velocity at significant levels above the ground. The paper also gives details of an industry funded research project that aims to permit the effective use of this data at distances many kilometres (km) (miles) from the location of the sounding equipment, and to develop a short term predictive model that will permit the amount of meteorological reinforcement that will occur at firing time to be determined before a decision is made to tie up a shot.

Horizontal stresses are caused by global plate tectonic forces. During 1995 alone, they were largely responsible for closing two U.S. longwall mines. This paper presents six case histories from Pennsylvania. West Virginia, Kentucky and Alabama. In each case history, a mine encountered roof falls or difficult ground conditions in the headgate, caused by horizontal stress concentrations. The problems are detailed and the control measures adopted are described. In most cases, nearby longwall panels without stress concentrations were trouble-free. The paper also discusses detailed measurements made at two adjacent Pennsylvania longwalls. One headgate was oriented to avoid a horizontal stress concentration, and the other was not. Eliminating the stress concentration dramatically reduced roof support loads and roof deformation. The paper concludes that proper panel orientation and sequence is the key to maintaining headgate ground control. The optimum orientation is not parallel with the maximum horizontal stress, as previously thought but rather 200 in the stress shadow of the gob. Other stress control techniques, including artificial support, are briefly discussed.

Since the promulgation of the first Federal Asbestos Standard by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 1972, other federal agencies have modified the standard to better carry on their own unique missions. The instruments used to identify and measure asbestos, the sampling protocol, and the criteria used to define asbestos, have been modified to some degree. The Mine Safety and Health Administration regulates and controls asbestos dust in the mining and mineral commodity industries. However, crushed stone and processed ores contain mineral fragments that are frequently difficult to distinguish from asbestos. Mineral nomenclature, instruments for particle analysis, and sampling strategy must be accommodated to some degree to make asbestos control workable and meaningful. Precedent in other agencies has made consideration of these changes possible. Newly identified amphibole asbestos minerals have further complicated the agency?s regulatory charge. Changes in its Asbestos Standard are now being considered. Crushed taconite ore in the Eastern Mesabi highlights many of these issues. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. The title of this address was selected before I had an opportunity to consider in detail the matters that I would like to discuss. Accordingly, I chose a very broad subject-so broad indeed that it would be foolhardy for me to attempt to deal with more than a few aspects of it. I do not propose to touch. at all on the developments to date of our mining and metallurgical enterprises, beyond paying a sincere tribute'to the skill and enterprise of those who have established an international reputation for Australian mining and metallurgy. I would rather look ahead and discuss certain factors that will play a decisive part in the future development of our mineral resources. I do this in no dogmatic spirit, and I hope that my remarks may lead to discussions which will stimulate action where it is needed.In recent years my colleagues and I have been forced by circumstances to give consideration to problems in the fields of mining and geology, and in process metallurgy, which lie outside the scope of our own research work. People come to us with metallurgical problems because they know of no more appropriate place to go, and it is distressing to have to inform them that it is nobody's job to offer them advice and assistance. I want to suggest to your Institute that it should press strongly for the provision of properresearch facilities for the mining and metallurgical industries, such as aready exist in most enlightened countries. In such countries, those connected with the development of mineral resources are able to obtain information and advice from Geological Surveys, Mines Departments or Bureaux of Mines, which offer far more comprehensive services than are available in this country.Before discussing specific technical problems of the mining and minerals industries, I shall enunciate certain general principles that I believe should be followed in respect to the technical side of the development of all Australian industries. The problem can, I suggest, be considered in three parts-technical education production, and research. I shall confine my remarks mostly to the research aspect, for it is with this that I am most familiar.For the efficient development of any industry in Australia, it is essential firstly that We should learn what is going on abroad, and secondly that we should simultaneously conduct independent research. In the latter sphere the Governmeht'departments and the private companies' or groups of companies should have complementary functions, the former concentrating on problems common to a number of companies or industries, and the latter on their oWn individual problems. The microstructure of ferrosilicon is important since it controls the disintegration of the material during crushing and thus the generation of fines. Therefore a study of the microstructure formation during solidification of pure FeSi(75wt%Si) and FeSi(75wt%Si) containing 1.2wt%Al and 0.2wt%Ca has been initiated. The material has been cast into rods of 8mm diameter, which have been remolten by induction heating and directionally solidified in a Bridgman apparatus. This allows the temperature gradient and the growth rate to be controlled independently. The temperature history during solidification has been recorded by a thermocouple in the melt. Growth rates have been varied between 5 and 400µms-1 and temperature gradients between 3 and 14°Kmm-1. The microstructures show a large dependence on the solidification conditions. The crack formation in the alloys has been studied and found to be strongly related to the microstructure.

OK Tedi Mining Ltd. (OTML) is in the process of optimising the concentrator performance. One aspect that has been recently implemented is an upgrade of the existing expert control philosophy on the grinding circuit and this will be the topic of this paper. Ore grinding in SAG mills is a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) process subject to several disturbances, most typical being quick acting disturbances such as changes in ore characteristics like hardness and particle size and slow acting disturbances such as ball charge variations and liner wear. The OTML SAG mills treat ore from diverse ore bodies and receive fresh feed subject to large changes in particle size. These circumstances make these mills particularly challenging to control. In this paper, a comparative analysis is presented between the performance of the OTML SAG mill #2 before and after the commissioning of a hybrid control strategy. The strategy uses Expert Knowledge combined with advanced disturbance rejection to reduce the variability of the main process variables, especially pressure and power. It further optimises the overall operation by driving the SAG mill #2 against process constraints (e.g. high power, high motor temperature and high scats recycle rate) and maintaining the operation at or near this point. This strategy is implemented by a combination of the manipulated variables (i.e. fresh feed tonnage and % solids) at any given time.The paper will present trends and a statistical analysis of the comparative results of the mill operation over a period of months, showing a 30% reduction in mill power / pressure variability and a 12% improvement in average power drawn. An increase in throughput was also observed, but cannot be conclusively attributed to the change in mill control due to other changes that were made to the SAG mill #2 during the period of comparison. An additional benefit includes better acceptance from the operators with improved consistency of the SAG mill #2 operation across shifts.The paper will also discuss further improvements envisaged in the continued optimisation of the grinding control circuit.CITATION:Savage, C, Rodriguez, R and Metzner, G, 2013. Flash Smelting Furnace (FSF) hot dust-laden is cooled in a waste heat boiler (WHB) and then dedusted in electrostatic precipitators (ESP’s) before being treated, together with the Peirce Smith Converters off-gases, in the sulfuric acid plants for SO2 removal. FSF dust is sulfated by SO2 and O2 in the WHB. Typically, 70% of the dust from the FSF drops in the WHB while the remainder is caught in the ESPs. The collected dust is recycled to the FSF for Cu recovery. Some smelters have developed hydrometallurgical treatments to recover Cu from the dust; impurities, such as As and Bi, are bled as leach plant residues. This paper presents a study (laboratory scale), of leaching the FSF dust, generated in Atlantic Copper Smelter using the weak acid bleed from the gas scrubbing/cooling section (GSCS) of sulfuric acid plants. Leaching was performed with 0.5 mol L-1 sulfuric acid concentration, 60ºC, and a solid/liquid ratio 1/3. After leaching, H2O2 was used for arsenic and iron oxidation. pH was adjusted for precipitation of arsenic and iron as scorodite or as scorodite and arsenical jarosite. The precipitation was carried out at 95ºC during 3-6 h. Liquids after precipitation are suitable for subsequent treatments of electrolysis. INTRODUCTION The copper smelter dusts are usually recirculated totally or partially to the flash furnace. This practice increases the amount of impurities feeding the furnace. Some authors have developed processes for treatment of these materials for copper and zinc recovery and for arsenic, antimony and bismuth inertization. The processes for the treatment of copper smelter dusts can be pyrometallurgical (Yu, 1987; Carter, Vance, Aldridge, Zaw, & Khoe, 1994; Fu, Jiang &Wang, 2000), hydrometallurgical, or mixed processes (Yin et al, 1992; Mulale, Mwema, & Mashala, 1999; Gorai, Jana, & Khan, 2002). Hydrometallurgical processes have been extensively studied and, in some cases, applied to an industrial scale. The most important chemical reagent proposed for leaching the dusts has been sulfuric acid (Roman-Moguel, Plascencia, Pérez, & Garcia, 1995; Gabb, & Evans, 1997; Larouche, 2001; Morales, Cruells, Roca, & Bergó, 2010; Cáceres, Cruells, Morales, & Roca, 2012; Ecometales, 2013; Yang, Fu, Liu, Chen, & Zhang, 2017). Processes developed in alkaline media, and in some cases with the presence of sulfide, have also been carried out (Gabler, & Jones, 1988; Morales, Hevia, & Cifuentes, 2009; Alguacil, Garcia-Diaz, Lopez, Rodriguez, & Alonso, 2013), as well as by using a bioleaching process (Massinaie, Oliazadeh, & Seyed Bagheri, 2006; Bakhtiari, Atashi, Zivdar, Seyedbagheri, & Fazaelipoor, 2011).

The algorithm used in this development is an extension of D. Wishart's one-level mode analysis. The program can be used to cluster either vectorial or axial data; it is currently being used by the Bureau of Mines to cluster fracture orientations.

Failure of the mine floor supporting coal pillars frequently occurs when the subcoal strata include "underclays" or other low strength strata. The failure process has been studied to define the response of these materials to applied coal pillar loads and to determine the applicability of bearing capacity analysis to evaluate unsafe conditions. The study has been accomplished through an investigation of both the intact and insitu geotechnical properties of the subcoal strata and through the installation of floor movement monitoring instrumentation. The results of these studies have indicated that both the shear strength of the underclay and the stratigraphy of the subcoal strata must be considered in the analysis. The shear strength was the major controlling factor determining the ultimate load carrying ability of the materials, but the thickness and stratigraphic position of the weak layers influenced the mechanism of the failure process. The methods of bearing capacity analysis were used to define pillar stability that included provisions for taking into consideration a two-layer system. Conditions assumed for a coal mine where a weak underclay overlies firmer strata. The results of the analysis compared very well with observed mine conditions, indicating marginal conditions in areas of the mine which later experienced pillar support failure. In addition, a "heave factor" was derived to predict potentially unstable floor conditions in the mines studied in detail.

At an early stage of the examination of most prospects, samples are taken; and the sample values obtained play an important part in determining the subsequent history of the prospect. It is, therefore, important that. eveJJy effort should be made to interpret asfully as possible the meaning of the observed results. In this connection, it is suggested that examination of the assay values of mine samples by simple statistical methods may bring to light information of considerable value, which might otherwise be missed.Although expert statisticians may derive more information from the available data, those who are, like the writer, less proficient mathematically, may also benefit by applying quite simple statistical methods. At least they will develop a useful habit of thought bywhich they become aware at all times that sampling results only provide estimates of the truth, but that an assessment of the precision of such results may be possible. The object of this paper is to provide some evidence of. the truth of these statements, by theuse of a few very elementary statistical calculations.General.The idea that any mine sample is subject to error from a variety of causes is a very familiar one. Doubt always exists with regard to the representativeness of a perfectly cut sample, and other errors may arise through imperfections of sample cutting, crushing, splitting and assaying. Some causes of error may give rise to "constant" errors, others may cause variable but one-sided "systematic" errors, and others again may bring about variable results without any tendency toward bias on the average. In statistical language, mine sample values are subject to errors which may have either assignable causes or chance causes. The former are those which can be isolated, or should be capable of isolation, while the latter are those remaining when all assignable causes have been removed. A single constant assignable cause brings about bias in all results, and one or more than one variable assignable cause brings about variation between individual results and perhaps an overall bias. The system of chance causes that would remain if all assignable causes were removed would cause variation between individual results but no overall bias. CAPTAIN JOHN H. BALLAMY John H. Ballamy, Captain on the Regimental Staff of the 103d Engineers, was killed near Fismes, on August 9, 1918. Captain Ballamy was born at Plymouth, Pa., in 1886 and graduated from the High School of that town in 1903. In the following year he began work as a coal miner, and at the same time began the study of mining engineering in the evening and any other spare time. He continued this diligent and energetic practice for many years. For sixteen years he continued in the employment of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Company's coal mining department, first as a practical miner, next as rodman on the survey corps, of which he soon became chief, then draftsman and mining engineer in the company's office. In January, 1916, he was promoted to the position of district engineer in charge of mining engineering work. He became a member of this Institute in September, 1917. CAPTAIN JOHN H BALLAMY. Captain Ballamy's military experience began at the same time as his engineering practice. He was a charter member of Company A, Engineers, N. G. P., which was organized ten years ago. He saw service on the Mexican border as First Lieutenant of this Company, and remained in that position until November, 1916. In July, 1917, he was again called into service and was sent to Camp Hancock, Ga., with the 103d Regiment of Engineers. Before joining this regiment he attended a school for officers at Fort Sill, Okla., where he received special training in field fortifications. In December, 1917, he was commissioned Topographical Captain on the Regimental Staff, and in April, 1918, preceded his regiment by about six weeks to France, where he again attended an officers' training school. He rejoined his regiment on July 15, near Chateau Thierry and was killed near Fismes on August 9, 1918.

Alluvial gold was found in the Terawhiti area, West of Wellington, in the 1850s. This led to the discovery of reef gold. Periods of minor 'gold fever', company flotations, and mining activity occured between 1869 - 1973, 1881 - 1986, and in the late 1880s, with one final company active in 1911 - 1914. 1n the early 1980s, further field work was carried out. No viable mining operations resulted from any of this activity.
