An accurate and reliable prediction of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) performances, in terms of Rate of Penetration (ROP), utilization (U), and cutter wear rate, is a critical element in the successful planning and execution of mechanical tunneling project. Three open hard rock TBM projects were studied to establish possible trends and correlations between rock mass properties and machine performance. Based on this analysis and literature survey, three geological parameters, including RQD, RMR, and groundwater inflow rate, were identified as having the greatest impact on TBM utilization level. Rate of Penetration (ROP) and cutter wear rate were also correlated with fracture spacing, alpha angle, and Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI).

Native asphalt was produced by five companies in two States, Texas and Utah. Bituminous limestone, used primarily as a paving material for street and road repair, was produced by White Uvalde Mines and by Azrock Industries Inc., Uvalde County, TX. In June, Azrock Industries was purchased by the R L. White Co. Gilsonite, a solidified hydrocarbon found only in Utah and Colorado, was mined by American Gilsonite Co., a division of Chevron Resources Co. (a subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California); by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp.; and by Hydrocarbon Mining Co. (a subsidiary of Oberon Oil Inc., a Utah corporation) from properties in Uintah County, UT. Gilsonite is used for a variety of purposes including automobile bodysealer, light-weight aggregate for cement used in oil well drilling, asphaltic building board, protective coverings, anticorrosive paints, and roofing compounds.

This report presents the results of a study to determine compaction criteria for coal waste embankments. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the costs and resulting effects on the engineering proper-ties of coal waste materials, utilizing different compaction methods, equipment passes, and lift thickness. Based on the results of the study, a cost efficient compaction method that will attain the desired results will be recommended to the coal mining industry. The report describes a comprehensive literature search into the compaction of coal waste materials, field compaction programs, laboratory investigations, analysis of test data as well as conclusions and recommendations for establishing the compaction criteria. The findings obtained in this investigation are intended to supply much needed information and to justify the guidelines that have been recommended.

The paper describes prediction, control and validation of face pressures, and special TBM features for the bored tunnels of the New Metro Rail City Project, Perth, Australia. The selected EPB-TBM passed below a heritage bridge and the operational Perth Railway station in ground conditions consisting of fully saturated uniform sand combined with shallow overburden and a horizontal alignment radius of only 135m. Therefore, strict control of volume loss, TBM operations and ground movements was vital requiring continuous evaluation and adjustments to TBM operation parameters. The paper discusses the effectiveness of applied TBM face pressures and the used foam/polymer soil conditioning which was measured against achieved volume loss and the predicted range of ground settlements.

This study was conducted as part of a project involving the evaluation of a new type of noise exposure monitoring paradigm. Laboratory tests were conducted to assess how “nonstandard” dosimeter microphones and microphone po­sitions measured noise levels under different acoustical condi­tions (i.e., diffuse ?eld and direct ?eld). The data presented in this article re?ect measurement differences due to microphone position and mounting/supporting structure only and are not an evaluation of any particular complete dosimeter system. To varying degrees, the results obtained with the dosimeter microphones used in this study differed from the reference results obtained in the unperturbed (subject absent) sound ?eld with a precision (suitable for use in an ANSI Type 1 sound level meter) 1/2 -inch (12.7 mm) measurement microphone. Effects of dosimeter microphone placement in a diffuse ?eld were found to be minor for most of the test microphones/locations, while direct ?eld microphone placement effects were found to be quite large depending on the microphone position and supporting structure, sound source location, and noise spectrum.

The technology advance of mobile devices makes consumers of these equipment do more constant exchanges, with this the obsolete devices discarding becomes an environmental problem, due its landfill accumulation. In order to minimize the environmental impacts caused by these equipment there?s the recycling necessity of polymers, ceramic and metallic materials. The main goal of this recycling is to study the printed circuit board of device mobile processing through ore treatment in order to recoup copper. Initially printed circuit boards were processed in a knives mill, in order to liberate the ferrous material, after that it was done the magnetic separation of the reduced residue. With the not magnetic fraction it was done the grain sized analysis and sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide leaching analysis. With the chemical analysis results proceeding from the leaching aliquot it was possible to observe that the leaching method with sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide presented greater copper recovery.

An evaluation was made of one of several improved underground communication systems sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The system evaluated was installed in a typical metal/non-metal room and pillar mine and utilized UHF repeaters connected to a unique distributed antenna and passive reflector system which provided mine-wide communications. A microprocessor controlled data collection system was assembled and installed for the evaluation. Data consisting principally or times and durations of messages and identities of the originating transceivers was collected between February and August of 1982 (6 mos.). Analysis of the data shows that the principal benefits are reduction in time required for unscheduled maintenance and repair, enhancement of safety, and better coordination of production activities. A cost benefit analysis shows a net benefit over cost, although it is also concluded that the capacity of the system is greater than can be justified by current activity in the mine.

A good deal of experimental work has been done from time to time on the application of compressed air to the elevation of wet pulp. On account of the flat nature of most of our mill sites elevation of the pulp has to be provided for, and the various methods in vogue show considerable loss of time, in the replaceing of wearing parts. During the last two years the writer has carried out a great many experiments with a view of devising an elevator that will give continuous work with a minimum of wear.The results do not show a high efficiency for the power employed, but the lift is continuous in operation, very cheaply installed, and possesses no wearing parts. The lift was tried working in a bore hole of 8 in. diameter, but in many cases it is more convenient to sink a small well for the purpose. The result to date showed that the most efficiency was obtained when the depth of the wellwas not less than the height of the lift required. The pressure of air required in pounds per square inch was (approximately) half the number of feet to be lifted.In the majority of cases the lift required varied between 20 ft. and 50 ft. and the air pressure required between 10 lbs. and 25 lhs. per square inch. In most existing installations the air compressors in use were delivering air to the receivers at about four times that pressure, and when air so compressed was expanded to perform its work at a reduced pressure, it was apparent that the power exerted in origInally compressing the air above the working pressure required at the lift was absolutely lost.

Slag-metal equilibrium experiments were conducted at 1500ºC and1580ºC under 0.03 atm, 0.05 atm and 0.83 atm CO partial pressures using silica and Cr-oxide crucibles. The complex slags belonged toSiO2-CaO-Al2O3-MgO-FeOx-CrOxand the metal phase to the Cr-Fe-C-Si-(S) systems. The carbon saturation of the metal phase was avoided using oxide crucibles and thus the results are pertinent to ferrochromium refining slags and processes. From equilibrium data and thermodynamic calculations, the CrO /(CrO+Cr2O3) ratio in the slag was determined as 0.75, 0.80 and 0.86 under 0.83 atm and 0.05 atm of CO pressure at 1500ºC and 0.03 atm and CO pressure at1580ºC, respectively. The results clearly demonstrated that a higher chromium content of the metal results in higher Cr in the slag, and chromium in slag decreases with increasing SiO2. The results were also sensitive to the crucibles used as these oxide crucibles saturated the slag either with respect to SiO2or Cr-oxides. It was also demonstrated that the relative amount of CrO in the slag was higher when SiO2crucibles were used in accord with thermo-dynamic calculations. Iso-concentration curves for carbon and chromium of the metal phase in equilibrium with the slag were drawn on a pseudo ternary SiO2? (AI2O3+CaO+MgO) ?(Cr2O3+Fe2O3) diagram. The activity coefficients and activities of carbon and chromium of the metal phase were also calculated from the experimental data and available thermodynamics information and were plotted as iso-activity curves in the same pseudo ternary diagram. As a mining social practitioner, social indicators are within the purview of required competencies. A situation, where the ER manager requested assistance in quickly deriving a few social indicators for the strategic plan motivates this paper: despite ample technical knowledge about indicators, a clear understanding of stakeholder aspirations and concerns, as well as familiarity with management priorities such a request required reflection to produce a satisfactory approach, which combined pragmatism with enough academic rigour to provide reliable measures, while being justifiable to management who are unfamiliar with many of the pertinent debates. Importance: Social indicators enable the identification of more and less effective mine-community engagement strategies as well as providing primary data to better understand how the mine-community social system responds to different interventions, thus guiding future engagement plans. In addition social indicators: ? Assist communication about social strategies with Engineering and Operations management, using a quantitative language that is familiar to them. ? Provides concrete data to engage stakeholders to discuss progress and challenges arising, to move discussions towards technically robust strategies and away from politically interested proposals. ? Finally, social measurement is required more and more in due diligence, covenants and ongoing monitoring in Independent Engineering assessments of projects for financing. This paper begins by considering some technical considerations that are useful to guide indicator development. It then introduces the field research informing this paper and discusses some useful results in the light of further applicable concepts from the literature. The paper ends by considering corporate aims in applying corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs and discusses the application of the research for practitioners at mining operations, in the light of these aims.

Open pit slope design has conventionally been effected as a bottom-up function utilizing available geotechnical information. This results in a decision criterion based on probability of failure and factor of Safety with a risk assessment being carried out on the proposed design slopes. The design approach recommended reverses the process using fault event tree decision methodology. The consequences of this approach are that acceptable risk criteria have to be determined by mine owners. Slopes are then designed by the technical staff to achieve these corporate goals. Benefits that arise from the process are that the owners take a proactive decision on the risk-benefit relationship allowing the technical staff to optimize the geotechnical exploration programme and design.

"Production commenced at the Golden Sunlight Mine in 1983 and at Kidston Gold Mine in 1985. These projects were both constructed under the management of the Placer Dome Inc. (Technical Services) group of Vancouver, B.C.Golden Sunlight uses a conventional rod mill/ball mill grinding circuit while Kidston uses a SAG /ball mill, and later on, SABC circuit. Since the hardness of the ore and the fineness of the primary grind in both mines are about the same, a meaningful cost comparison can be made. The comparison is made on the basis of capital and operating costs.The result of this study indicates that a significant capital cost savings can be achieved in favour of the SAG /ball mill circuit when the ore is amenable to semi-autogenous grinding. With a good maintenance program, the operating cost for the SAG /ball mill circuit could also be lower that the conventional rod mill/ball mill circuit.HISTORYGolden Sunlight MineGolden Sunlight is a 5 530 t/d gold mine located near Whitehall, a small town 60 km east of Butte, Montana. Originally optioned by PDI U.S. in 1958, the development of the property waited until 1981 when economic conditions became favorable for the project to proceed.Semiautogenous grinding tests were conducted during the final stages of the feasibility study. The hard near surface ore was not quite amenable to semi-autogenous grinding. The best result produced from a series of tests using a 1.83 m diameter mill was a semiautogenous work index of 39. This is substantially higher than the 22 Bond work index of the sample used in the testwork. A conventional SAG/ball mill circuit for this ore will be extremely inefficient, and for this reason, this circuit was rejected in favour of a conventional rod mill/ball mill circuit."

OneSteel and BlueScope Steel have been working with the CSIRO to develop sustainable carbon fuels and reductants which are suitable for use in the iron and steel industry. One of the initial focuses of this work has been a process called steel recarburisation which is the addition of carbon to liquid steel to produce particular steel grades. This paper reports on the preliminary work and the recent full scale recarburisation plant trials conducted at the OneSteel Sydney Steel Mill.   Preliminary experimental work involved kilogram scale recarburisation of liquid steel with a range of commercial and prepared charcoal products. This work showed that charcoal dissolves into liquid steel very quickly and that carbon recovery to steel was inversely related to the charcoal volatile content. Initial larger scale work focused on the collection of wood, and preparation of low volatile charcoal which is required for steel recarburisation. Approximately three tonnes of charcoal was prepared at the Corrimal coke ovens of the Illawarra Coke Company. This charcoal was dried, crushed, sized and packaged in a form suitable for addition to 80 tonne liquid steel ladles.   The recarburisation trial was conducted over 30 ladle heats during June 2009. The charcoal was manually added to the liquid steel in 5 kg bags using normal plant practice. Conventional commercial recarburiser was also added to the liquid steel in alternate ladle heats. The performance of the charcoal was compared with the conventional recarburiser based on the carbon recovery to steel, hydrogen pick-up by steel and the rate of carbon dissolution into steel.   An analysis of the trial results showed that the charcoal performed at least as well as commercial recarburiser in carbon recovery and rate of dissolution but may have resulted in a slightly higher hydrogen content of steel. This is probably due to the higher moisture content of charcoal. The main challenges in the future include: increasing the charcoal density to improve transport and handling economics, securing a sustainable supply of biomass for the steel industry and developing a charcoal production industry so materials of suitable quality for both production and trials on other applications can be conducted.

The rock blasting and mining industries use a system of detonators and explosives for mining operations. Many detonators use small metal bridgewires, which are heated by passing a current through the wire, heating and igniting the pyrotechnic powder in contact with the wire, Typical bridgewires require a current of at least 3 amps, applied for a few milliseconds, for an explosive output. The semiconductor bridge (SCB), in comparison, initiates an explosive in 0.01 to 0.1 of a millisecond.

This report is the third of a series on convergence of roof and floor in coal mines and subsidence of surface that accompanies it. The first papery dealt with extraction in a mechanized mine (Montour 10) having relatively short rib lines that retreat rapidly. The second 6/ dealt with extraction in a mine (Crucible) in which coal was loaded by hand and in which the rib lines were long and slow-moving. The present report deals with a mine (Gibson) in which conditions approximated those in the Crucible mine, except that the distance between room centers was considerably less and the pillars were narrower in consequence. Moreover, the average cover was less and the studies were made under the steep hillside of a stream valley compared with a gently rolling surface over the portions of the second mine studied. Gibson mine lies in the east-central part of Washington County, Pa., approximately midway between the Montour 10 and Crucible mines on a north-south line. A cooperative agreement covering the work was made with the Hillman Coal & Coke Co. through W. L. Affelder, vice president. This paper describes the methods used in the investigation, gives excerpts from the data obtained, and offers such generalisations as appear to be justified.

The Coal Resources Survey commenced in 1974 as a search for Huntly Power Station coal, but soon developed into the most detailed regional coal search programme to be instituted in New Zealand. The program was initially conceived as geological in nature, but later included geotechnical, geohydrological, mining assessment, coal use, and environmental considerations in its investigations. The programme never undertook development work but has provided Government and the private sector with a sound basis for identifying development options. The discovery of large-scale coal resources in the Mokau, Waikato, and Taranaki regions and the lignite resources of Otago and Southland are a measure of the Survey's success. The directive by Government to phase out the NZCRS to a large extent coincides with the completion stage of the program. With most of the detailed regional study finished, it now remains to collate the data and publish summary reports at Coalfield and Coal Region level, in order to maximise the use and value of the data collected over the years.

"The important task of metallurgical accounting that used to be done manually is being more and more automated. Currently available solutions can generate accounting reports without human intervention or almost. However, the practical conditions for fully delivering the promised benefits of those solutions are sometimes overlooked either by end-users or by integrators. The mere fact of filling reports with values satisfying several constraints such as mass conservation constraints does not, by itself, ensure a high quality metallurgical balance. Since managers make decisions based on these reports, it is logical that the metallurgical balance performance be monitored and retrofits be made if necessary. Such retrofits may involve modifications to the measurement strategy or the reduction of the spatial resolution of the material balance model. This requires an estimability and redundancy analysis (ERA) tool to assess the feasibility of the modified model. Since determining by hand the estimability and redundancy of a set of non measured and measured variables is not trivial, even for a medium-sized mineral processing plant, a dedicated ERA tool brings valuable assistance to the metallurgist in charge. The present paper aims first at explaining how a state of the art metallurgical balance is a key enabler for the adoption of a smart process plants paradigm (SPPP) in mineral processing. Then, the fundamentals behind the building of an ERA algorithm are introduced and illustrated by two examples. Finally, the role of an ERA tool in achieving state of the art metallurgical accounting and how it contributes to delivering additional value are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Smart Process Plants Paradigm (SPPP)Mineral processors have seen an increase lately in external pressures toward operating performance improvements. Indeed, the globalization of the mining business is a key driver to becoming more productive, more responsive to market changes, to improving corporate governance and reporting standards. These current pressures differ somewhat from the past ones in leading to a larger than ever number of conflicting constraints that plant managers must concurrently satisfy while maximizing plant profitability. A full-scale Deister column was operated in parallel with the conventional cleaning bank of cells and a pilot Jameson cell in parallel with the conventional rougher cells. Flotation column performance was appreciably enhanced by use of an improved washing system and an internal launder. The performance of the rougher bank of cells, Jameson cells, cleaner cell bank and column were described by simple linear functions. These allowed calculation of overall circuit recoveries and evaluation of alternative circuits. An evaluation procedure based on a financial criterion is demonstrated with a simplified example, illustrating how revenues and operating margins are often of more concern than concentrate grade and recovery
