"High performance production under challenging geological conditions is a product of several parameters. Main factors are the technical equipment and the knowledge in processing. The design and the support system of maingates must also be taken into consideration. The extraction of seams in German underground hard coal mines of RAG in a range of heights between approximately 1.1 and 4.0 m ( 4 and 13 ft) is done by plow and shearer technology. A complete system for quality management of production is required. The process examination of processes begins with procurement of the equipment. Education and training of the engineers and specialists, as well as for the miners are requirements for success as well.This report gives an overview of RAG measures for achieving high performance. Starting with examination of the processes accompanying procurement of equipment, the following important elements are described. Standards in education and training, technical design and elements of automated processing using stateof- the-art in control systems are critical to this system.The application of automation plays a decisive role in modem coal mines. The latest development in German coal mines is the fully-automated shearer system for longwalls. This helps to enhance safety, particularly in difficult ground conditions, by removing the shearer and shield operators from the immediate mining activity.INTRODUCTIONLongwall mining in carboniferous strata in Germany faces various challenges. Different longwall systems are used to mine up to 24 seams, each with a thickness between 1.1 m (3.6 ft) and 4.0 m (13 ft). High stresses due to a depth of up to 1,400 m (4,593 ft) requiring pillars between the panels, require special systems for roadway development, roadway support and reinforcemen.t as well as for longwall advance operations. Two main types of equipment for extraction are shearer and plow systems. While shearers are utilized for seam thicknesses above approximately 1.8 m (6 ft), plow systems can be used for smaller seam thicknesses between 1.8 m (6 ft) and approximately 1.0 m (3 ft)."

"Quantitative analysis of mine-wide subsidence at the kilometer scale and details of stress distribution about an advancing longwall face are estimated using an adaptation of the finite element method. The method is well suited to the tasks at hand. For greater realism, variability of strata properties is taken into account as are the effects of joints and cleats on elastic moduli and strengths. Evolution of pillar stress and entry closure remote from the face is readily quantified in a series of analyses that simulate face advance. Computed results compare favorably with the evolution of closure measurements about an instrumented pillar in a two-entry headgate. The appropriateness of the finite element method is confirmed. This method is based on first principles that avoid empirical schemes of uncertain applicability and numerical models “calibrated” by fitting computer output to mine measurements.INTRODUCTIONMine-induced seismicity is intimately related to strata mechanics associated with longwall coal mining and room and pillar mining, as well. Strata deformed beyond an elastic limit often tend to fail rapidly by brittle fracture and, thus, to emit acoustic signals in the form of elastic waves. Understanding the induced seismicity in coal mining offers the potential for early warning of hazardous conditions. Many years of experience with seismic phenomena associated with hardrock mining suggest considerable complexity should be expected. However, recent coal mine studies (Pariseau, 2014; Pariseau, 2015; Pariseau and McCarter, 2015; Pariseau and McCarter, 2016) have shown high correlations of seismicity with element failures in finite element simulations. The main lesson learned from these studies is one elaborated by Iannacchione et al (2005); deviation from normal activity is an early warning of ground control difficulty. For example, an abrupt increase in seismic event rate, or equivalently, an increase in element failure in finite element simulation of panel advance, is a cautionary indication for ground control. Present and past study results demonstrate the effectiveness of finite element simulations for mine design and early detection of potential ground control issues."

"China is a major coal producer and consumer. It is necessary to mine the steeply pitching coal seams due to development of the coal industry to meet the increasing needs for coal. Flexible shield supports mining is a safe and efficient mining method for steeply pitching coal seam that was first applied in HuaiNan mining area in the 1970s. The coal seams are steeply pitching in DaAnShan Colliery, so mining is mainly done by the flexible shield supports method. The roadway lay-out and extraction technology are researched in order to improve the safety, yield and work efficiency in the flexible shield supports working face. Optimization of the flexible shield supports mining method is discussed. The main optimization aspects are as follows: (1) the angle of working face and mining track roadways are increased from 23° to 28°, and (2) the technology and parameters of coal breaking are optimized. Applicable conditions, as well as advantages and disadvantages are also discussed. Finally, a comparison is made of the two different flexible shield supports mining methods, namely ""bench blasting . technology"" and ""piecewise blasting technology"".INTRODUCTIONChina is the largest producer and consumer of coal in the world and relies heavily on coal for energy production. At present, Chinese production is about 42% of the worldwide production, and coal has accounted for 76% of primary energy production. Coal plays a dominant role in the structure of energy production and consumption, which is fuel and an important industrial raw material but it is non-renewable. In recent years, the high inclined seams (35°< angle of coal seam < 45°) and steeply pitching coal seams (angle of coal seam >45°) have drawn increasing attention in the mining sector along with the growth of coal mining. There are two reasons. First, there are abundant reserves of high inclined and steeply pitching coal seams in China, which account for 15- 20% of total reserves (Xie, Dong-hai, 2007). Highly inclined and the steeply pitching coal seams are mined in more than 50% of the western mining provinces such as Sichuan, ChongQing, YunNan, GuiZhou, XinJiang, GanSu, NingXia, etc. As the mining of mineral resources continues west in the 21st century, the study of coal mining in high inclined seams and steeply pitching coal seams will be of great importance. Secondly, better quality coal has become scarcer in the eastern mining areas after years of exploitation, so steeply pitching seam mmmg is growing more prevalent. In short, carrying out research on steeply pitching seam mining technology plays an important role in sustaining the development of the Chinese coal industry."

The de-confinement mechanisms of unstable failures as they occur in deep coal mining conditions are investigated using a distinct element numerical modeling code. The Mohr-Coulomb and continuously yielding joint constitutive models were used to study the compressive failures in coal and slip behavior of coal-rock interfaces, respectively. The effect of strength variations within interfaces on the failure mechanism of mining faces is also studied. The stability of interface slip failures was found to have a significant role in the failure mode of coal sidewalls. When the interfaces experience stable slip failures, the sidewalls are more likely to fail in a stable manner. With occurrence of unstable slips at interfaces, unstable compressive failures of sidewalls are triggered. The numerical modeling results support the proposed de-confinement mechanisms and emphasize the importance of including the coal-rock interface behavior in the analyses of unstable compressive failures. The significance of the proposed mechanisms in underground mining conditions is that rock discontinuities with large cohesion drop can become potential factors, inducing unstable compressive failures at ribs and mining faces. Therefore, the de-confinement mechanisms should be taken into consideration in mine design.

For the study of overburden movement in longwall mining of shallow coal seams, most scholars merely consider the thickness of bedrock and top soils. In this paper, the overburden movement in longwall mining of shallow coal seams with thin top soils and key strata group was studied. By using numerical simulation, the development of fractures in the overburden was analyzed for different ratios of panel width to depth (W/D) and depth to mining height. The results show that the overburden movement changed with the variation of mining height, panel width and depth under the specific geological conditions. It also explain how different overburden disturbance structures, such as ?three zones? (caved, fractured, and continuous deformation zones), ?two zones?(caved and fractured zones) or ?steps-like collapse? are formed under different mining conditions. The results broaden the vision for research on overburden movement in longwall mining of shallow coal seams.

"In this paper, the mining experience and challenges for the first right-handed longwall panel in the Pittsburgh seam are introduced. The longwall headgate T-junction experienced very high face convergence (up to 2 feet), accompanied by roof sag, floor heave, and rib loading. The headgate convergence was so large that, in a few places, it threatened longwall retreat and ultimately required the bottom to be re-graded.Different underground instruments, such as a roof scope, de-gas drill, tell-tale, laser meter, and Borehole Pressure Cell (BPC), were employed to explore the roof geology and to monitor the entry convergence and the stress changes in the pillar. In addition, the impact of other geologic factors, such as large overburden depth, laminated sandstone roof geology, soft floor, and large headgate equipment, were also analyzed. Subsequently, geotechnical solutions were provided to avoid or mitigate the impact of these challenging geologic factors.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that high horizontal stress will affect the stability of roof, floor, and ribs within underground mines. In general, the headgate entries will experience stress concentration for the right-handed longwall face. On the contrary, the stress concentration will be in the tailgate entries for the left-handed longwall face (Hasenfus and Su, 2006). Without the stress shadow, the stress concentration in the headgate for the first longwall panel may be more significant (Figure 1).A mine in the CONSOL Pennsylvania Operation was extracting the first right-handed longwall panel in the Pittsburgh seam, which created high horizontal stress concentrations at the longwall headgate. Because of concern over soft wet floor within the syncline, floor coal had been left in place on development. Early on, upon retreat, the longwall headgate T-junction experienced very high face convergence, accompanied by roof sag, floor heave, and rib loading. The floor heave was exacerbated by the presence of floor coal, which buckled upward near the center of the beltline. Roof movement was occasionally aggravated by laminated roof conditions, but was kept in check by aggressive supplemental support including cable bolts, yielding props, cribbing, and roof mesh. Rib bolting and rib mesh helped to further maintain the entryway stability by keeping sloughage at a minimum. Nevertheless, despite the heavy support, headgate convergence was so large that, in a few places, it threatened longwall retreat and ultimately required the bottom to be re-graded."

The construction of underground hydrocarbon storage caverns in Jurong Island, Singapore, is nearing completion. The facility, located beneath the seabed of Banyan Basin, is comprised of five storage caverns with a storage capacity of approximately 1.5 million cubic meters. The galleries of each cavern are 20 m wide by 27 m high and approximately 340 m long. In addition to the storage caverns, various access and operations tunnels are required to support the facility. Among these are water curtain galleries to ensure that hydrostatic pressures in excess of hydrocarbon storage pressure are maintained in the rock mass surrounding the storage caverns. Early in the design process, conventional steel rock bolts with resin polymer grout were considered for ground control. However, the construction contractor proposed using fibe-reinforced polymer (FRP) bolts with cement grout due to the corrosive hydrologic environment, weight and handling considerations, local construction preferences, and the requirement to have a cavern design life of 50 years. FRP bolts with cement grout were ultimately chosen for the project. The FRP bolting system has proven to be very successful, with no ground failures experienced where systematic FRP bolting has been applied. This paper discusses the properties of FRP bolt/cement grout bolting systems, their characteristics in relation to steel bolt/resin bolting systems, and numerical modeling results assessing their performance.

"Roof and rib instability is an important issue in underground mining. To optimize ground support design, enhance ground stability, and reduce the possibility of roof or rib failure with minimal use of artificial ground support, it is essential to have an accurate understanding of ground conditions. This includes the location of voids, cracks, and discontinuities, as well as information about the different strata in the immediate roof. This paper briefly introduces ongoing research on void detection by using the roof bolter feed and rotation pressure. The goal of this project is to improve the sensitivity of detection programs to locate smaller joints and reduce the number of false alarms. This paper has presented a brief review of the testing procedures, data analysis, logic, and algorithms used for void detection. In addition, this paper has discussed the results of preliminary laboratory tests and statistical analysis of the data from these two drilling parameters used for void detection.INTRODUCTIONRoof falls are one of the most serious and frequent accidents in underground mining. Each year, personnel are injured or killed because of roof falls. Equipment can also be damaged when this occurs. According to Mine Safety and Health Administration statistics collected from 1999 to 2008, ground falls were the largest cause of fatal accidents in underground coal mining, causing around 40% of all fatalities (NIOSH, 2015a). Out of 8 to 10 fatalities and over 800 injuries are recorded each year in underground mines, there are nearly 2,000 reportable non-injury ground falls every year (NIOSH, 2015b).Certain features in the ground, such as voids, cracks, and discontinuities, are significant factors that cause roof support failures and roof fall accidents. Currently, several manufacturers provide smart roof bolters with limited capabilities for void detection. While successful in many instances, in laboratory experiments, the existing void detection systems have limited success in detecting void openings that are less than 1/8 inch This limited success was observed in testing concrete blocks with gaps in between, simulating a rock medium with voids. Detection programs have missed some voids, while, in some cases, they have shown false detection. These algorithms need to be more accurate in sensing voids to improve the capabilities of these programs."

Taking the longwall mining face area in a steeply dipping seam as the research object, the stability of an asymmetrical rock mass structure is analyzed using shell theory and masonry beam theory. The results show that an asymmetrical shell structure is formed at the top strata of the mining stope and its magnitude is mainly determined by the mechanical characteristic of the overburden strata of working face, mining space size and so on. Localized instability of the shell structure is the main factor that leads to the overall structural instability in the stope. The instability modes includes: the shell roof instability dominated by tensile failure, the shell shoulder instability initialized by compression-shear failure, and shell bases composite instability occurs in tensile and compression-shear modes. The shell structure stability dedicates rational strata control measures to choose, and the caving height of overburden strata is the key for shell structure instability.

With the intensification and expansion of deep coal mining, the surrounding rock stress environment becomes further deteriorated because of the complicated geological environment and powerful mining effect, so the major deformation of roadway appeared frequently. The proportions of floor heave are increasing and , the most serious problem is the floor heave of preparatory workings. The coal seam of Binchang coal area in Shaanxi province is at a depth of 621.6 ~ 817.0 m, the average thickness of the coal seam is 25 m, and the overburden and coal measure strata are the main regional aquifers and are highly permeable. The properties of water-weakening are obvious in the floor strata. The main preparatory workings or chambers were driven in the coal seam. The severe floor heave of the water chamber appeared during early mining and the amount was 180 ~ 910mm, and seriously affected the normal installation and use of the water chamber. Theoretical study and numerical simulation as well as the in-situ measurements were carried out to investigate the deformation and failure characteristic of the surrounding rock with non-support in the floor and the main reasons which caused the floor heave were determined. A new combined support technology was proposed which consists of overcutting, grouting, backfilling and invertedarch and bolt-grouting. The field monitoring showed that the cumulative convergence of the water chamber was 20mm, the maximum convergence speed is 1.2 ~ 2mm/d, the accumulative convergence of two ribs was 36mm and the maximum convergence speed is 2mm/d. The combined support technology will enhance the support intensity between the roof and floor, the two sides of the entry and improve the loading capacity of the floor effectively and the floor heave can be controlled effectively.

"The objective of this paper is to study the behavior of a low thick and low depth coal seam and the overburden rock mass. The mining method is room and pillar in retreat and partial pillar recovery. The excavation method is conventional drill and blast because of the small production. The partial pillar recovery is about 30% of the previous pillar size, 7m x 7m. The roof displacement was monitored during retreat operation; the surface movement was also monitored. The effect of the blasting vibration on the final pillar strength had been considered. Due to blasting, the pillar reduced about 20%. The consequence is more pillar deformation and roof vertical displacement. The pillar retreat and ground movement were simulated in a three-dimensional numerical model. This model was created to predict the surface subsidence and compare to the subsidence measured. This study showed that the remaining pillar and low seam reduce the subsidence that was predicted with conventional methods.INTRODUCTIONMining low coal seams (less than 1 meter) with the room-and-pillar mining method implies the excavation of part of the roof or floor to maintain adequate entry height for equipment and compliance with labor regulations with respect to ergonomic issues. The direct consequence of this is an increase in coal contamination and the increased cost of transportation and preparation at the plant. Traditional room-and-pillar mining only uses a development operation, even with a continuous miner or drill-and-blasting. Therefore, all the run of mine (ROM) coal is carried out with part of the roof or floor. However, if the retreat mining method were to be considered, the quality of the coal could increase because only the coal seam is excavated from the pillar recovery. The quality of ROM coal will increase, and the cost will decrease proportionally to the amount of coal produced from the retreat operation.However, the retreat mining with partial or total pillar recovery implies greater subsidence. This is particularly true if the coal seam depth is shallow, under 100m depth. Subsidence prediction in room-and-pillar retreat mining is complex; it depends upon the remaining pillar (stump pillar) size, as well as the pillar height, and the behavior of the pillar after retreat. This is related to the strength of the remaining pillar, which is related to the excavated method (drill-and-blast or mechanical)."

"Trusses are primarily used as passive roof supports in coal mines. They are constructed of three main parts: two grouted bolts installed at opposing forty-five degree angles into the roof so that they are anchored over the ribs and a cross member that ties the angled bolts together. There is also hardware used to assemble these components. The capacities of the angled bolts are typically 30 to 40 tons and the tensile capacity of the cross member is also 30 to 40 tons. Importantly, the direction of the immediate roof loading on the cross member is unlike the direction of the loading on the angled bolts. The load on the cross member is transverse to the longitudinal axis instead of along it, and therefore the cross member is loaded in the weakest direction.Previous tests conducted on truss systems applied loads such that the increasing tension in the two diagonal bolts increased the tension in the horizontal cross member, resulting in a stiff response. By contrast, if the load is applied directly to the cross member, which then transmits those forces to the diagonal bolts, it results in a much softer response.Based on this difference, laboratory tests to apply transverse loads and measure the vertical load capacity of three different types of cross members were conducted using the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) located at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in Pittsburgh. The length of the samples was about 16 feet. Single-point load tests, with the load applied in the center of the specimen were conducted to verify the performance of the test arrangement and the finite element models. Double-point load tests, with a span of eight feet, were also conducted. This arrangement replicates the performance of the cross members with a distributed load. Both of these test arrangements were conducted on one-inch-diameter threaded steel bars and 0.7-inch-diameter cable and 0.6-inch-diameter cable cross members.For the single-point load configuration, the yield of the one-inch bar was nominally 22 kips of vertical load, achieved at 17 inches of deflection. For both sizes of the cable cross members, yield was not achieved even after 18 inches of deflection. Peak vertical loads were about 20 kips for the 0.7-inch cables and 15 kips for the 0.6- inch cables. For the double-point load configurations, the one-inch bar cross members yielded at 33 kips of vertical load and 10 inches of deflection. The 0.7-inch-diameter cable cross members broke strands at 30 kips of vertical load and 10 inches of closure, and the 0.6-inch-diameter cable cross members broke strands at 25 kips of vertical load and 10 inches of closure. Finite element models of each of the six different configurations were developed and show the variation of the vertical capacity of the cross members and the difference of the behavior of the bar versus the cables."

"The University of New South Wales (UNSW Australia) had been involved in the study of premature failure of rock bolts in Australian coal mines from the initial identification of the problem in 1999 (Crosky et al 2002). Rock bolt steel changes over the last decade appear to have not reduced the incidence of failures. A broadened UNSW research project funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and Industry has targeted finding the environmental causes through extensive field and laboratory experiments. This paper describes the field studies conducted in underground coal mines, in particular attempts to measure the contribution to corrosion from groundwater, mineralogy and microbial activity. Various underground survey techniques were used to determine the extent of broken bolts, with the presence of both stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and localized deep pitting making no single technique suitable on their own. Groundwater found dripping from bolts across various coalfields in Australia were found to be not aggressive and known groundwater corrosivity classification systems did not correlate to where broken bolts were found. In-hole coupon bolts placed in roof strata containing claystone bands confirmed the clay as being a major contributor to corrosion. Microbes capable of contributing to steel corrosion were found to be present in groundwater, and culturing of the microbes taken from in-situ coupon bolts proved that the bacteria was present on the bolt surface. An ‘in-hole bolt corrosion coupon’ development by the project may have multiple benefits of 1) helping quantify newly developed corrosivity classification systems, 2) providing an in-situ ground support corrosion monitoring tool, and 3) for testing possible corrosion protection solutions.introductionThe problem of premature rock bolt failure in Australian coal mines was published in 2002 and 2004 by UNSW Australia from Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded projects. The majority of the broken bolts examined had steel Charpy impact toughness values of 4 – 7 Joules, and the failure mechanism was most often stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Steel fracture mechanics predicts that an increase in impact toughness will increase the length of the crack before sudden brittle failure. In the final report of 2004, anecdotal evidence from one coal mine indicated that the problem may be eliminated in some environments by a change to steel grades with higher Charpy impact values of ~16. (Crosky et al, 2002 and 2004)"

Multiple-scam mining is becoming more common in the United States, especially in the East, where primary reserves arc being depleted, forcing mining companies to develop secondary seams, Although mine engineers and planners are aware of the basic effects of seam interaction and generally follow guidelines for columnizing entries and avoiding load abutments, mine design earn greatly benefit bum more quantitative estimates of scam interaction effects. This paper presents case studies from two eastern mines subject to seam interaction effects where pre-mining stresses were quantified: the Mingo Logan Coal Company&apos;s Mountaineer Alma A Mine, and Peabody Group&apos;s Lightfoot No. 2 Mine. In each of these mines. mining is being carried out within 60 to 90 ft of overlying longwall and pillar panels under maximum cover of about 1,100 ft As part of overall mine planning and design efforts al these mines. NSA Engineering performed numerical modeling analyses using the non-linear boundary-element code MULSIM/NL Input parameters were calibrated by modeling areas where ground conditions resulting from seam interaction were well documented. By incorporating actual cover loading based on topography and seam dip, and the integrity of remnant, gate road, arid harrier pillars in the overlying mines, the pre-mining vertical stress in the underlying scants was estimated based on the pre-mining stress, plans for mains, gate road, bleeder, and pillar panels were developed. Although mining experience in these areas has beers somewhat limited to date, she designs developed as a result of these analyses have so far proven successful.

"In the process of Geologic Hazard Mapping (GHM) for underground coal mining, geologists evaluate the effects of various geologic and geotechnical conditions to assist with optimization of mine productivity and with selection of more favorable areas for future development. The methodology involves correlation of multiple geologic factors (such as overburden depth, proximity to sandstone channels, and areas with weak immediate roof strata) with conditions encountered during mining (roof falls, floor heave, pillar spalling, etc.). Such studies yield maps that identify areas where mining is likely to be difficult and allow mining engineers to foresee favorable and unfavorable mining areas when planning new or expanding mines. To expand the benefits of GHM, work has been done to correlate geologic factors with room-and-pillar mining advance rates. Average mining advance rates are mapped and then correlated to different areas, as characterized by GHM. This process exposes the geological characteristics that have a material impact on mining rates of advance, improving the rates of advance into future mining areas with similar geological conditions. The final result of the work allows mine planners to not only design the mine qualitatively accounting for areas of unfavorable conditions, but also allows the mine planner to more accurately apply rates of advance for mine timing and production sequencing. The use of GHM to predict mining advance rates in unmined areas enhances the benefits of traditional hazard mapping and provides quantitative data that can be incorporated into mine sequencing models.INTRODUCTIONThe role of a geologist in the coal mining industry has evolved significantly over the last 30 to 40 years. Geologic Hazard Mapping (GHM) mapping for coal mines began in the late 1970s and early 1980s (Chase, Newman, and Rusnak, 2006). Since its beginnings, the GHM process has evolved significantly and continues to take on new levels of sophistication. Numerous case studies of GHM application to predict future mining conditions exist in the literature. For example, Artrip, Nelson, and Newman (1993), documents the geotechnical characterization of roof and floor for mining in the Imboden Seam in Virginia where previous mining efforts had been abandoned due to adverse mining conditions. In addition, Keim and Miller (1999) summarize evaluation of geological influences on a longwall mine in West Virginia. In both examples, significant geotechnical and geological information was available, including the opportunity to compare predicted mining conditions against actual conditions as mining progressed."

"In Europe, the magnitude and range of mining deformation predicted on the surface have been, in most cases, determined using methods based on Gauss' influence function (e.g., Knothe's theory, Ruhrkohle method, Stochastic method). The increase in the application of numerical methods (finite element method FEM, finite difference method FDM, etc.) provides an opportunity to offer a different approach in describing mining deformations. However, this phenomenon is very complex, and due to numerical limitations, a two dimensional analysis was made (in plane strain) in most cases. Such 2D models could not accurately describe the mining geometry and geological conditions. The authors of this paper carried out the calculations in 3D models which describe a mining situation and the character of the strata in one Upper Silesian Polish mine. Furthermore, the authors include some tips for three-dimensional modeling.INTRODUCTIONThrough the years, many numerical models have been used to describe a phenomenon of underground mining exploitation influence on the ground surface. However, such rock masses are highly disturbed (cracks, fractures, changes in water conditions, etc.), and it is very difficult to suitably describe, in a mathematical manner, such materials. Therefore, many of the numerical models created have been corrected in various degrees.At first, models widely used to describe the behavior of strata in the region of exploitation appeared as elastic models, where scientests assumed that a whole strata behaved in a linearly elastic manner, according to Hook's law. Those models have been modifed to received suitable VALUES (of settlement and range of subsidence troughs. Scientests created this amongst others: elastic models with contact between the rocks layers (Shippam, 1975; Salamon, Chugh and Yang, 1993), elastic models with no tension (Chrzanowska-Szostak, 1988), and elastic models with a contact on the subsidence limit plane (Tajdus K., Tajdus A., 2005). However, in most cases, those models did not bring the expected results and the differences between shapes of measured and the calculated subsidence trough were substantial."

"Through changing the axial load on backfilling material compaction test to reflect different overlying strata pressure on backfilling material, the stress-strain relations in the compaction process of backfilling material under the geological condition can be obtained. Based on the characteristic of overlying strata movement in backfill mining, a model of roof thin plate is established. By introducing the stress-strain relation in compaction process into the model and using RIZT method to analyze the bending deformation of roof, the bending deflection and stress distribution can be obtained. The results show that the maximum roof subsidence and maximum tensile stress occurring at the center are 255mm and 5 MPa, respectively. Tensile fracture of roof under the geological condition of Dongping mine did not occur. The dynamic measurement results of roof in Dongping mine verify the theoretical result from the aforementioned model, thereby suggesting the roof mechanical model is reliable. The roof thin plate model based on the compaction characteristic of backfilling material in this study is of importance to research on backfill mining theories and application of backfilling material characteristics.INTRODUCTIONSolid backfilling mining (SBM) is a green mining technology in which the solid waste materials is placed into the gob to support the overlying strata and to control roof's subsidence and movement (Miao, 2012; Miao et al., 2010, 2015). SBM has been successfully used in several mines to solve many problems, including coal extraction under buildings, water bodies and railways, surface subsidence, and environmental problems. Good results have been obtained in many mines (Zhang et al., 2009). The key in the application of SBM technology is controlling strata movement. However, the critical factor influencing the controlling effect of strata movement is compaction characteristics of backfilling materials. Thus, a roof model of SBM is built based on the filling materials' compaction characteristics. A subsidence equation and the critical failure condition of roof was given and field verification was performed at Panel 15061 of Donping Mine."

"Steel wire mesh is the accepted standard for roof and rib skin control at most coal mines in the United States. Wire mesh is delivered to the mine in bundles that are heavy and awkward to handle. The large size, stiffness, and weight of the wire mesh can present a safety hazard in transporting underground and storing on the roof bolter. Installing wire mesh on the roof and ribs with the roof bolter can be a challenge as well.Synthetic mesh is lighter than wire mesh and can be folded and rolled into a safe, manageable size. A single synthetic mesh roll large enough to cover the roof and ribs in a deep cut can be safely handled by two men. The roof bolter is designed to carry and dispense the roll as it advances and installs primary roof support, resulting in a single pass roof and rib ground control solution. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of the roof bolter synthetic mesh handling system developed by J. H. Fletcher & Co., Huesker, Inc., and Oxbow Mining.INTRODUCTIONRoof and rib skin control in some coal mines has been an issue since mining first began. Roof and rib skin problems vary from mine to mine. The type of roof rock material exposed after mining; the mine atmosphere; and stresses from depth of cover, over mining, and/or undermining are some of the variables that can contribute to roof skin problems from mine to mine.Potential roof and rib skin problems can be time dependent as well. Some mines have roof skin rock, sometimes called draw rock, that falls when drilling the hole for the roof bolt as the initial roof support is installed. Some roof skins are more stable but can fail over time. The failure of roof skin can even be between properly installed roof bolts with roof plates (Figure 1).Mines have most commonly used a wire mesh that comes in individual panels anywhere from 5 ft x 5 ft (1.5 m x 1.5 m) all the way up to 5 ft x 16 ft (1.5 m x 4.9 m) in size. They are typically constructed of 8- or 9-gauge wire welded on a 4 in (102 mm) square pattern. A 5 ft x 16 ft (1.5 m x 4.9 m) panel weighs approximately 35 lbs (16 kg). These steel wire mesh panels can make it a difficult and sometimes dangerous task to deliver them from the surface to the roof bolter and then store on the machine. Manipulating the mesh panels from the storage area on the machine to the final installation position on the roof or rib can also be a daunting task (Figure 2)."

"The soft coal in China has several issues, low permeability, high gas content and prone to gas outburst, making it difficult to drill and improve its permeability. Using the rock mass loading test, the relationship of stress-strain-permeability-time of sandstone was investigated. The fracture network that communicates with coal seams to provide the pathways for gas migration can be established by drilling, hydraulic fracturing or loose blasting in the roof and floor about 5m from coal seams top and bottom. The gas migration can be summed up as ""desorption-diffusion-two levels of seepage"" for gas drainage of the quasi-protection-layer in hard coal seams, and ""desorption-two levels of diffusion-seepage"" in soft coal seams. In the quasi-protection-layer, different gas drainage techniques were used during different stages of mining. Gas drainage of the quasi-protection-layers was demonstrated at Hebi Zhongtai Mining Co., Ltd. The results showed that the technique promotes the gas seepage flow, and improves the efficiency of drainage. The influence zone of the quasi-protection-layer was 1601 m2 and the average amount of gas drainage was 328m3/d, with the maximum being 661m3/d. INTRODUCTIONGas is one of the main factors that cause disasters and influence safety production in underground coal mines (SACMS, 2009). The coal-bearing formations in China have been subjected to multiphase tectonic stress field during the period of geological evolution. Coal body was often crushed into fragmented coals and mylonitic coals under the tectonic stresses (Su and Lin, 2009). The gas permeability of coal is generally poor. So in underground, drilling and hydro-fracturing technology have been used to improve the permeability of coal, such as intensive drilling, hydraulic punching, hydraulic cutting, hydraulic extrusion and deep hole blasting. But the gas drainage rate was low, only 23% (Liu, Li, and Li, 2006; Li and Wei, 2006; Henan Polytechnic University, 2008; Ma, et al., 2014; Lin and Wu, 2009; Zhou, et al., 2011) that was much lower than the rates achieved in the main coal-producing countries such as America and Australia whose average rate of gas drainage was 50%. The protection layer mining technology has been used widely as an effective technique to improve the permeability of coal in the mining of multiple coal seams (Cheng and Yu, 2003; Diaz and Gonzalez, 2007; Karacan, et al., 2007; Palchik, 2003; Latham, et al., 2013; Yuan, et al., 2013; Shi and Liu, 2007; Wang, et al., 2008, Guo, et al., 2015; Lu, et al., 2015; Slazak, Obracaj, and Swolkien, 2014 ). In the single low permeability coal seam, there is no protection layer. This kind of coal seam has low permeability, high gas content, soft coal body, and is prone to serious gas outbursts. During drilling, the holes very often spray, collapse, stuck and wedged the drilling tool. The hole length drilled is difficult to reach the required minimum, the service life of holes for gas drainage is short, the construction cost is high, and the holes are difficult to maintain. The gas drainage efficiency of single low permeability coal seam, especially soft coal seams, cannot be improved even though hydro-fracture technology has been implemented, because its permeability is not improved."

"In order to study pillar and overburden response to retreat mining, a ground control program was conducted at a Central Appalachian mine. The program consisted of several monitoring methods including a seismic monitoring system, borehole pressure cells in the pillars, and time-lapse photogrammetry of the pillar ribs. Two parallel geophone arrays were installed, one on each side of the panel with the sensors mounted 3m (IO ft) into the roof. A total of fourteen geophones recorded more than 5,000 events during the panel retreat. A MIDAS datalogger was used to record pressure from borehole pressure cells (BPCs) located in two adjacent pillars that were not mined during retreat. A series of photographs were taken of the pillars that had the BPCs as the face approached so that deformation of the entire rib could be monitored using photogrammetry.Results showed that pillar stability and cave development were as expected. The BPCs showed an increase in loading when the face was 115 m (380 ft) inby and a clear onset of the forward abutment at 30 m (100 ft). The photogrammetry results displayed pillar deformation corresponding to the increased loading. The microseismic monitoring results showed the overburden caving inby the face, again as expected. The significance of these results lies in two points, I) we can quantify the safe manner in which this mine is conducting retreating operations, and 2) we can use volumetric technologies (photogrammetry and microseismic) to monitor entire volumes of the mine in addition to the traditional point-location geotechnical measurements (BPCs).INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDExcavation of underground openings is a difficult job in a challenging environment. The rigor of the process is compounded by the lack of a method that allows quantification of changes within the rock mass as excavation progresses. Statistics kept by the Department of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration show that 16% of fatalities and lost time incidents in the underground mining industry are due to unexpected rock mass failure (MSHA, 2015). A recent example is the Crandall Canyon, Utah, coal mine accident caused by the vertical collapse of a longwall coal mine on August 6, 2007 (Dreger, Ford, Walter, 2008)."
