Diatomite or diatomaceous earth is composed of innumerable microscopic opaline skeletons of single-celled aquatic plants called diatoms. The unique properties of this material enable it to be used as an important filtration medium and filler. The Circumpacific contains several economic deposits of diatomite. The largest of these is located in Lompoc, Ca. This deposit is the world's largest, purest, and most uniform marine deposit currently being mined. The other Circumpacific deposits are of fresh water origin. These deposits and Lompoc's unique marine deposit are significant sources of the world's diatomite supply.

The growing national concern over energy has aroused a great deal of interest in the most efficient and least costly way to use our remaining fossil fuel reserves. A number of studies have been published which compare the overall thermal efficiency and cost of gas and electric energy. These studies have been carried out by a wide variety of organizations including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, The Rand Corporation, The Stanford Research Institute, and The Institute of Gas Technology. This paper is an attempt, by PGandE, a large combined gas and electric utility serving most of the northern and parts of central California, to compare the cost and efficiency of gas and electric energy for certain residential appliances using actual operating data and financial statistics for the year 1974, and thereby develop some guidelines for future energy developments utilizing these limited fossil resources. The appliances chosen for the study were kitchen ranges, clothes dryers, hot water and space heaters. These appliances were selected because they can be served with either gas or electricity and they account for approximately one-third of PGandE's total residential electric sales and nearly all of PGandE's residential gas sales.

Techniques utilized to incorporate geological data in computer modeling and ore reserve estimation have undergone considerable evolution during the past fifteen years. Computer analysis and evaluation of two precious metal deposits are presented as examples of innovative computer techniques developed at Asarco. The first is a gold deposit occurring in a steeply dipping Pre-Cambrian greenstone sequence. The second is a manto-like manganiferous silver deposit occurring in a relatively flat sequence of Late-Paleozoic sediments. In both deposits, four sub-horizontal zones of geological influence are evaluated.

The mine environment is dynamic and operating conditions change continually and are difficult to predict. New equipment, variable geological conditions, modified layouts, and different equipment operators make monitoring and control system difficult to apply without continual software maintenance. The paper reports on algorithms that were developed, encoded with Knowledge Craft Tools, and tested on underground coal mine data to adapt to the dynamic environment. The system receives data from sensors in near real time and then identifies patterns in the data. Using a set of mode features the data is automatically checked to determine the present operating mode. When the operating mode changes from the previous shifts, the system automatically learns the new mode characteristics and uses that mode context for further data analysis. The concepts presented in this paper are applicable to a wide variety of mining scenarios, not just underground coal mining.

At its lowest hierarchical level, the mine ventilation control system consists of local systems controlling the concentration of noxious gases in the air currents of various branches of the ventilation network, and of local systems controlling the air flow rates through those branches in which it is not necessary to regulate the concentration of any noxious gases. With respect to the noxious gas concentrations, the manipulated variables are air flow rates, while with respect to the air flow rates - the manipulated variables are aerodynamic resistances of the corresponding branches. Since there is an interdependence between the air flow rates in the ventilation network branches controlled through changes in aerodynamic resistance, the total system of mine ventilation control falls in the class of multivariable systems. The treatment of individual branches of a controlled ventilation network as separate plants presupposes an absolute autonomy of local systems, which is an untenable concept. The present paper is an attempt to break up the multivariable control system of the noxious gas concentrations and the air flow rates into autonomous (mutually unrelated) local control systems. The plant discussed is a ventilation network of arbitrary configuration with a single main axial fan. Because of the complexity of the problems involved, the multivariable control system of noxious gas concentrations and air flow rates has been described as linear, with constant and lumped parameters.

This paper attempts to answer whether or not the mill performance at Bougainville could have, in fact, been predicted by the population balance approach, or whether other special considerations are required to explain their behavior. In recent studies, the plant tests were performed at Bougainville and batch tests were carried out at the Utah Comminution Center. In all tests power measurements were made and several levels of energy input to grinding were evaluated. Also, tracer tests were performed for mill residence time determination. The performance of Bougainville's 5.5x6.4-m mill has been very successfully predicted by population balance methods. The prediction errors are only about 1% on product size distribution and 4% on power with a mill volume scale-up of 3790:1. It is significant that this approach will reduce the risk of failure in large mill design that has been recognized in traditional methods.

The administrative processes of coal mines are becoming increasingly complex. As society evolves into a more complicated structure with greater emphasis on individuality, government regulations reach deeply into every activity in an effort to force individuals into a standardized mold. These contradictory pressures add an extra burden to the administration of a mining operation. Recent years have brought a substantial change in the skills needed by mine supervisors and managers. As a result, a better understanding of the administrative functions is necessary. The mine superintendent has the overall responsibility for the mine; for effective operation he must be sufficiently knowledgeable to oversee all the complex functions that make up the mine. This chapter does not cover all the administrative requirements because of the variation in mine operation and in company policies and organizational structure. It does attempt to identify the administrative functions that would be required at a large mine with a preparation plant. It is assumed that the mine operation is decentralized with very little duplication of functions at the organizational levels above the mine. Thus each function is assumed to be relatively complete at the mine and under the general supervision of the mine superintendent.

Keith, John R. 1968. Relationships of lead and zinc contents of trees and soils, Upper Mississippi Valley District. Preprint, Fall 1968 Meeting, Soc. Mining Engineers of AIME. Lead and zinc contents of elm, maple, and oak trees and of soils in which the trees grew were determined in samples from the Upper Mississippi Valley mining district, and from an area outside but contiguous to the district. The lead and zinc analyses of plant materials served to differentiate the mineralized and non-mineralized areas. Stems contained about two times as much lead and about 2-5 times as much zinc as did leaves taken from the same stems. Lead and zinc analyses of all soil horizons could be used to differentiate between the two areas. Soils at most sample sites in the mineralized district seemed to be more reliable than plants for geochemical prospecting and are a more practical sampling medium. Soil samples from areas with thick loess cover, however, failed to indicate the presence of mineralized bodies whereas tree samples from the same sites contained anomalous amounts of lead and zinc. It is suggested that in areas of thick loess cover plant samples could be used in prospecting for lead and zinc.

The problem of defining the optimum final limits of an open-pit mine has challenged the mining industry for the last three decades. The difficulty results mainly from the great number of variables involved and from the sheer computational effort required in real-life applications. An actual lignite deposit is used in this study to introduce and apply a new methodology that can be used as a basis for surface-mine design optimization. A geologic-reserves model of the deposit is first developed with the use of an integrated geostatistical-modeling package. The model is transformed into an economic one through the use of flexible objective function formulation(s). The final open-pit limits are then optimized using a competent commercial optimizer, and comparative-sensitivity analyses are performed to study the effect of some basic mining and economic parameters on the optimal pit design. The conclusions drawn can develop useful guidelines for decision making by the mine operator.

To model the zinc pressure leach, equations have been written that describe the rates of individual reactions taking place, including (a) oxygen mass transfer, (b) ferrous oxidation by dissolved oxygen, and (c) ferric reactions with ZnS and other minerals. In the continuous process, at steady-state, these take place at the same rate, and so the equations can be solved simultaneously. Model calculations using simultaneous equations are shown in graphical form to demonstrate the effect of different variables on the leach performance.

This work presents experimental results for the recovery of gold present in alkaline cyanide solutions by using the electroelution technique of strong-base anionic polymeric resins IRA 402-CL from Rhom and Haas-Brazil Ltd. loaded with gold. This technique of electroelution of anionic polymeric resins is based on the removal of metal ions adsorbed to the resin, resulting from a potential difference applied between the cathode and anode in an electrolytic cell. The electrolytic cell was composed of an aqueous solution with suitable chemical characteristics and an anionic polymeric resin bed loaded with gold. The resin used in the experiments was loaded using synthetic alkaline gold cyanide solution with 1.0 g/L of gold. The variables studied were electroelution time, cathode current density, distance between cathode and anode and the electrolyte chemical composition. Statistical methods made it possible to establish the optimum conditions that would achieve satisfactory gold recoveries by the electroelution technique. The statistically predicted response for the resin loaded with gold by percolation was 16.5% gold recovery, 2.0 A/m2 cathode current density, 20-mm distance between electrodes and 6.0 hrs electroelution time. For the centrifuging system, the statistically predicted response was 7.41% gold recovery under the following conditions: 0.25 A/m2 cathode current density, 1-mm distance between electrodes, 3.5 hrs electroelution time and 10.9% NaOH in the electrolyte chemical composition.

It is well known that processing of the high-silicon bauxites for obtaining alumina by the hydrochemical Bayer process is irrational due to the significant losses of alumina and alkali with red mud. The main source of losses of the mentioned compounds under the conditions of leaching by the Bayer process is the formation of difficultly soluble sodium alumosilicate of the composition Na20 .Al203, 2Si02 . n H20. A conventional method of an extra recovery of alumina as well as of regeneration of alkali out of red mud is the high-temperature sintering of the latter with soda and limestone with the subsequent leaching of sodium aluminate from the sinter by water or soda solution. A sequential version of the Bayer-sintering flow chart recommended for the prosessing of bauxites with an increased content of silica is based on this method. However, the sintering method is not the only alkaline method allowing to make an extra recovery of alumina likewise of alkali from red mud. Our investigations showed/I/, that the components mentioned can be recovered by a pure hydrochemical method of treating red mud with concentrated alkaline solutions, with lime (Ca0) being present, that was earlier succesfully used in the development of the hydrochemical method of processing nepheline rocks/2/. There are several potential large-volume uses for coal ash in mining-related applications that could be environmentally and economically beneficial to mining companies. Actual usage, however, may be constrained by regulations or by perceptions of coal ash and the potential uses. To identify currently allowed uses and to assess constraints to coal ash use in the eastern coal fields, questionnaires were sent to state coal mining agencies to determine their policies on coal ash utilization and to mining companies to solicit their viewpoints on coal ash utilization. Identifying and understanding the constraints will allow for the development of a coordinated and consistent approach to remove or reduce these constraints and possibly allow for increased utilization of coal ash by the mining industry. This paper summarizes the findings of our investigation.

Although recent advances have significantly improved our understanding of flotation fundamentals, disturbance variables combine to make it difficult to maintain steady state operating conditions over either the short or long term. One of the major concerns relates to knowing how much reagent to add to the flotation system, how to monitor the addition rate, and how to determine when to adjust the reagent addition rate in the presence of these disturbances. This paper will look at the development and installation of process control systems that address these issues. The economic benefits that accrued from the implementation of these strategies is described.

Testing methods are described to help in decisions of selecting the most viable comminution circuits. The authors present a comparison evaluation based on numerous studies to help make initial choices for feasibility evaluations. An update summary of completed Bond grindability and Abrasion Index testwork at Allis-Chalmers Process Research Test Center for all materials is included. "What is the best circuit to comminute primary crusher product to make beneficiation feed?" This frequently asked question has the implication that there is one circuit which is universally the right circuit. The answer has been sought ever since it has been necessary to break rock to liberate entrapped mineral values. With every new contribution to the art and the science of comminution, the scope of the discussions broaden. It is not even possible to define what the abstract term best means.

A number of on-stream coal slurry analyzers are presently being developed and commercialized for measuring ash and solids in coal process streams, particularly around flotation circuits. The eventual goal of these efforts is to develop on-line quality control systems for flotation circuits and other fine-coal cleaning operations. As part of this on-line monitoring and control effort, it is important to gain a better understanding of the response of industrial flotation circuits to changing operating conditions. This paper summarizes the results from a detailed sampling program performed at an industrial coal flotation circuit in western Pennsylvania. The testing focused on evaluating the response of the circuit to changes in reagent dosages, operating conditions and feed compositions. The testing indicated that it is desirable to maintain high collector-to-frother ratios to enhance coarse particle flotation. The recovery of fine impurity particles was also proportional to water recovery, due to hydraulic entrainment. Key words: Industrial, Coal, Flotation, Circuit, Reagent, Response.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an experimental method to evaluate the relative effectiveness of water additives on the extinguishment of coal fires. The experiments were conducted in the fire zone of the multiple entry section of the Bruceton Experimental Mine. Chambers filled with one hundred and eighty kilograms of Pittsburgh seam coal were ignited and allowed to burn until well developed fires were achieved. Extinguishing agent-water solutions were then applied to the fires and the quantity required to extinguish the fires compared to the amount of water alone required to extinguish similar fires. A 20% diammonium phosphate-water solution required an average of 22 L to extinguish the coal fires, while two commercially available additive-water solutions required an average of 30.6 and 30.3 L, respectively. The average amount of water required to extinguish the fires was 28 L. An analysis of covariance, using the thermal energy of the coalbed, Q, to quantify the fire at the time of extinguishment, showed that the diammonium phosphate-water solution was slightly more effective at extinguishing these coal fires than water alone, while the two commercially available additive-water solutions were statistically equivalent to water alone.

Introduction In 1979, rumors of a developing drug problem within IMC Fertilizer's Carlsbad, NM workforce began to surface. For the next two years, a management team contacted local, state, and federal regulatory agencies that had the potential resources to help combat this apparently escalating problem. These contacts included the local police department, the county sheriff's office, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). IMC approached each agency with two proposals. The first required the agency provide an undercover agent for placement in the company's underground facilities. The alternative required the company to provide the agent with the participating agency lending necessary legal expertise and guidance to accumulate the necessary data. MSHA regulations prohibit intoxicating beverages and narcotics on mining property. They also forbid persons under the influence of alcohol or narcotics from working in or around mines. The agency could not, however, help with this problem. The remaining agencies were sympathetic, but were unwilling to assist in implementing either program, citing legal implications. Without exception, these agencies not only refused to provide help, they discouraged any type of undercover operation, searches, drug screenings, or using dogs trained in narcotics detection. As law enforcement officials, they reasoned that any such program constitutes potential civil rights violations. An attorney advised IMC that it was not required to adhere to the same guidelines as law enforcement and regulatory agencies. It was his legal opinion that the company could conduct an undercover operation. But he recommended finding a private firm that specialized in this type of investigation. An experienced firm should have the expertise to conduct the operation and avoid the legal pitfalls that could be encountered. The management team agreed with the attorney and elected to hire a private firm. After extensive research and evaluation, three reputable companies were contacted, advised of the needs, and asked to submit a proposal. Their initial response was enthusiastic. None, however, submitted a proposal. Each was unable to locate a qualified agent willing to work in an underground environment. Privacy and civil rights At this point, it was apparent that an undercover operation was not feasible due to the lack of inhouse expertise and the lack of outside assistance. After more research, it was concluded that the only viable options left were the ones that the law enforcement community had earlier discouraged. These options included locker and personal searches, use of dogs trained in narcotics detection, and drug screening or testing. The management team evaluated the pros and cons of locker and personal searches. They concluded that if conducted properly, this approach could eliminate the problems. The potential legal liabilities, however, appeared to be tremendous. Strict guidelines would have to be adhered to in order to avoid invasion of privacy and civil rights violations. This meant announcing locker searches before conducting them and obtaining written permission from an individual before searching his person. Although the group was reluctant to lose yet another option, it was concluded that conducting searches under these conditions would be ineffective. It would also convey the message to the workforce that the substance abusers had the upper hand. This author was extremely critical of this legal opinion at the time. I have since concluded that the attorney was correct. This occurred in mid-1982. Court decisions of that era indicated the legal and political climate was sensitive to these issues. INTRODUCTION This paper presents an assessment of conventional flotation technology. In addition it presents some ideas which can be used to change the perception of what may be done with conventional flotation equipment to maximize its efficiency. Perspective of Conventional Flotation Technology 1. Flotation in many coal preparation plants is defined as something between a necessary evil and a non-viable concept because: -Too much art is required on a continuous basis to achieve uniformly acceptable results. -It is expensive, the capital cost in dollars per ton of circuit feed for flotation and dewatering is high. -It is a difficult process to use when SO2 reduction governs system design and equipment selection. -It creates a product (fine coal froth) that is difficult to dewater in the presence of BTU/lb as-received pressures. -It is a difficult process to control from a management standpoint, there are no dependable set points to rely on. 2. Many froth cell circuits are 0.5m x 0 (nominal 28 M x 0) feed which is sourced from screen/cyclone underflows. The original intent was to obtain maximum yield at acceptable product quality and moisture using disc filters. (See Figure #1) 3. An alternate to conventional flotation and its perceived to be limits of efficiency, capital costs, etc. is to move towards such developing flotation technologies as column flotation, reverse flotation, and microbubbles. A lot of work is being done to move these concepts thru pilot stages into full scale, commercial plant operation. The majority of the coal producers and coal preparation plant designers view these concepts as being in the development/pilot plant stages. OBJECTIVES Based on the preceeding comments of the perspectives of the coal producers and plant designers, the options are limited. They can make do with what they have available to them in the way of industry standard equipment and practices or they can move forward with developing technology. I feel there is a third option: what can we really do today with what is available to us, without reinventing the wheel? APPROACH 1. When processing coal against ash and SO2 restrictions, the fine clean coal stream can be the best stream on the clean coal conveyor due to the release by size and the ability to create a high BTU/low sulfur (dry basis) product. 2. Targets: -Consistent raw coal size consist in the plant feed . -Do not put pyrites in the froth cells. -Adjust criteria defining good flotation away from yield towards maximum BTU recovery at minimum ash. -Limit the froth cell feed size consist to 0.15 mm x 0 (nominal 100M x 0). -Establish and maintain a correct, consistent percent solids in the froth cell feed. -Select flotation reagents with care. -Introduce reagents in the proper sequence.

"The decline of the “super cycle” has placed an end to a decade of production-focused strategies, with operating cost growing at rates higher than production. Today, the sector is placed on a tough ride and forced to shift focus to cash preservation and efficient cost management. However, most cost management systems in the minerals industry are not conceived as value driving tools but to meet financial accounting and reporting needs. This research draws from a the development of an innovative cost management methodology that applies Activity-Based Bottom-Up cost budgeting and continuous improvement tools to develop a value-driven cost management system for sustainable improvement of operational efficiency and cost reduction. The methodology was successfully tested in the Andina underground mine III Panel sector of Corporation del Cobre (CODELCO), in Chile. INTRODUCTION Cost management is fundamental to profitability of any industrial project. Even more essential in mining, an industry that deals with commodities, which prices are dictated by the market and are beyond the management capacity of the company. The end of the mining “super cycle” and the advent in 2008 of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), placed an end to a decade of production focused strategies, with operating cost growing at rates higher than production. The sector was placed on a tough ride and forced to shift focus to cash preservation and efficient cost management. Many mining companies have seen themselves into the urgent need of cost management systems capable of achieving sustainable productivity gains and consistent profitability. Cost management is composed of three main processes: estimation, budgeting and control [1]. A number of conventional techniques have been used for cost estimation and budgeting for many years. However, most cost control systems in the minerals industry cannot be referred to as “cost management” since they are conceived to fulfil accounting and reporting needs, rather than to improve operational efficiency [2]. In general, conventional cost budgeting and control systems in mining use a “top-down” methodology, which lacks of necessary details, and fail as a management tool leading to undesirable results [3]."
