A geometallurgy study aims to link metallurgy and geology to reduce technical risk and enhance the economic performance of a mineral-processing plant. It does so by accounting for variability in a deposit to develop cash-flow models with variable throughput rates. High-quality sample selection for metallurgical test work that is representative of the deposit is an essential component of a geometallurgy study, but the large multidimensional data set makes sample selection a daunting task, as classifying the data set while respecting its heterogeneity is difficult. This paper presents a streamlined approach for sample selection, using statistical analysis techniques in Python. It cuts down time to select samples from around 1,200 s per drillhole to about 60 s for data classification and from 12 h to 8 h for handpicking samples from the classified data set, translating to cost savings. The cumulative sum method and k-means clustering method are used in the methodology to elegantly classify the data and select representative samples. The effectiveness of the methodology is demonstrated by presenting data from a prefeasibility study of a copper-iron mine in which 40 samples were selected for flotation test work.

Dust control in high production longwalls is a major problem requiring, among other things, careful attention to the design of operating practices, and ventilation schemes. Several studies have shown that the shearer is the major source of dust on a longwall face. Support movement has not been regarded as a major source of dust in U.S. longwalls; yet under certain conditions, 31 percent of the shearer operator's dust exposure can be due to support movement. Several methods have been developed for the control of shield-generated dust. Yet the need for better methods is apparent. In this paper, the amount of airborne respirable dust generated per shield move is estimated from specially designed experiments on longwall faces. A total of ten experiments were conducted in five longwall faces in four different mines. Each experiment involved one face visit and lasted three to six hours. The contribution of shield movement to the airborne respirable dust concentration immediately downwind of the shield moved, varied between 0.12 and 1. 75 mg/m3 in the five longwall faces. The mass of airborne respirable dust generated by shield movement was found to vary between 39 and 386 milligrams per shield move. The results from this study reveal that control of dust from longwall shields requires a combination of approaches involving alternative operating practices, reducing shield dust generation rate, increasing face air flow, and decreasing personnel exposure.

Asturias, in Northwestern Spain, has an extensive mining history. As a result of these historical mine activities where operations have been usually developed with little control on effluents or emissions (environmental regulation of mining activity has only been introduced recently), pollution has been severe in some areas, specially in Hg abandoned mine sites, which constitute one of the major environmental problems related to mining. In many of these sites, materials stocked in spoil heaps can be considered as hazardous wastes because of their chemistry, content on ecotoxic elements and potentiality to spread these to the environment. In the humid climatological conditions of the region, water and wind eroded spoils are dispersed through the environment by different pathways and occasionally surrounding soils and waters are intensively affected by pollution. According to the environmental risks that these unreclaimed mine sites suppose for human beings and ecosystems, remedial options must be considered.

Pilot plant operations are described for the treatment of manganiferous zinc concentrates from the Gamsberg ore deposit in South Africa via conventional electrolytic zinc processing. Two methods were employed for the control of excess manganese ions in the pilot plant electrolyte involving (1) chemical oxidation and (2) anodic oxidation. The chemical oxidation method for manganese control was very successful. It also was found that the addition of manganese dioxide ore was not required for oxidation of ferrous iron during the neutral leach or jarosite precipitation steps. A new method (JAR process) for iron removal also was tested in the pilot plant.

Discussion by E.S. Cheney Minter (1990) has provided an excellent summary of the sedimentology and theories of origin of the Witwatersrand paleoplacer Au/U deposits. However, recent stratigraphic, metamorphic and structural -tectonic research is radically changing the concepts about the Witwatersrand that now occur in most textbooks, review articles and North American minds. Presently, these concepts are biased by the past sedimentological research so well described by Minter. Specifically, the Witwatersrand Supergroup is Archean, does not occupy a depositional basin and is significantly metamorphosed and deformed. Thus, many of its sedimentary features, including the mineralogy of its ores, have been modified. The importance of the Witwatersrand ores cannot be overestimated. Mexico continues to be one of the main producers of silver, lead and zinc; although this leadership is ending because of the use of obsolete technologies, which is reflected in low recoveries of these processes. The country therefore requires to develop on new technologies in the field of nonferrous metallurgy, particularly be'cause it is the second most important source of foreign exchange. A novel method, presented in this paper, demostrates that refractory gold and silver can be extracted from a complex sulphide concentrate by a one stage pressure oxidation in an alkaline cyanide solution, this is achieved by simultaneous liberation_ and solubilization of the precious metals. Both gold and silver extractions are greater than 97%. Factors affecting recovery efficiency, such as: pH, lixiviation time in the reactor, temperature, particle diameter, pressure, % of NaCN and pulp density, were investigated. A summary of actual plant operations is also be included.

In a recent speech in Pittsburgh, Dr. George Keyworth, the President's Science Advisor, made a statement which I believe deserves our very careful consideration. Dr. Keyworth said that there is no energy crisis. The crisis, he explained, is simply that people refuse to accept the solution. The solution which Dr. Keyworth has in mind is increased utilization of our abundant supplies of solid fuels and, in particular, uranium. I share his view concerning the solution to our energy needs. The use of uranium fuel is a safe, clean, and dependable means to generate our electric power. It is time that we addressed the real energy crisis: the refusal to accept the nuclear solution. The reason for the refusal is not difficult to find. It is nihilistic thinking about risk. Under this thinking, we assume the worst possible case and act accordingly, simply because we cannot prove to a total certainty that nuclear energy is perfectly safe. If this absolutist approach were generally applied throughout our society, there is no doubt all of us would soon be sitting around our campfires fearfully holding the wild animals at bay with our trusty spears. Today I am here to enlist your support in reversing the regulatory trend that threatens the very extistence of the nuclear power industry. As distinguished scientists, engineers and businessmen, you can use your influence to help bring rational regulation to the industry. Our industry supports strong safety and environmental protection programs. We understand the need for and do not object to reasonable regulation. Many anti-pollution measures can be practical to implement, cost effective and highly successful in minimizing environmental impacts. However, it is a fact of life that in the field of health and safety regulation, the law of diminishing returns operates with a vengeance. Absolute or near-absolute safety is impossible and any attempt to achieve it is intolerably costly. Fixation on absolute safety is particularly acute in the regulation of the nuclear power industry. Government Agencies, overly anxious to allay the irrational fears of those opposed to nuclear power, are literally regulating the industry to death - exactly the result sought by the anti-nuclear groups. Dr. Robert L. DuPont wrote in a recent issue of [Business Week]: "The nuclear power industry has been virtually stopped in the U.S. [because of fear]. This is true despite the fact that for more than 20 years the commercial nuclear industry has operated under unprecedented public health scrutiny and that to date there have been no radiation-related injuries, let alone deaths, suffered by any member of the public."1 I believe a useful way to convey the nature of the problem faced by the nuclear industry is to review an example of [unreasonable] regulation. While the example relates to our domestic industry, I am certain there are similar situations in other countries. For the example I will use the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's recently issued regulations governing the stabilization of uranium mill tailings.2 These regulations, known as the Uranium Mill Licensing Requirements, specify, among other things, that radon emanation from uranium mill tailings be limited to no more than 2 pCi/m2-sec. First, one must understand that this standard will have virtually no impact on the total amount of radon to which the public is exposed. Radon emitted from even completely unstabilized tailings piles is a tiny fraction--much less than 1%--of the amount of radon released from natural soils in the United States.3 In fact, it is far outweighed by natural variations in the background flux. For example, changes in the level of the Great Salt Lake in recent years have had [eight times] as much effect on the amount of radon released into the Salt Lake City regional air than the annual release from the Vitro Mill tailings pile located in that city.4 Nevertheless, NRC claims that the standard is required to protect the public. The Commission admits, however, that there are no studies which establish that exposure to radon at the low levels associated with uranium mill tailings will result in any adverse health effects.5 In the absence of actual evidence, the Commission assumes that some such effects will occur on the basis of the linear, non-threshold model.6 Employing this model, NRC calculates that the maximum hypothetical risk for the average member of the population is only about 1 in 70,000,000 from the radon that would be emitted from [three times] the number of mills now in existence, even if the tailings produced through the year 2000 are left unstabilized.7 NRC has elsewhere explained that this level of risk would be equivalent to the risk posed by "a few puffs on a cigarette, a few sips of wine, driving the family car about 6 blocks, flying about 2 miles, canoeing for 3 seconds, or being a man age 60 for 11 seconds." This level of risk is [de minimis] in comparison to other risks commonly and readily incurred in our society.9 Moreover, even this remote risk is overstated. A group of prominent health physicists, including experts from the Department of Energy, The Environmental Protection Agency, Britain, Canada and Germany recently published a study indicating that the risk to the public per unit exposure to radon can be no greater than one-third that suggested by the Commission, and [may in fact be zero].l0 Regulators routinely rationalize the need for their regulations. For example, NRC attempts to justify the radon flux standard because it is necessary to reduce the risk to someone who builds a house on top of a tailings pile. This possibility, however, is totally unrealistic because the Mill Tailings Act requires that stabilized tailings be transferred to

Four computerized approaches for coal blending are described and their strengths and weaknesses are explored. Spreadsheet analysis Other than word processing, spreadsheet software is the most commonly used software. Its wide availability and ease of use are two desirable features that have led many to try to adapt it to the purpose of coal blending. These are the two main advantages of this approach. To use a spreadsheet for coal blending, each row of data represents one source of coal. Each column represents a quality of the coal, with the last column specifying the tonnage of that coal in the blend. The calculated figures are. the blended qualities, which can be programmed to appear in the bottom row. A trial-and-error approach is then used to develop the best blend. Inserting any blend in the last column provides the blend characteristics at the bottom of the page. If any specifications are not met, the blend can be changed, all calculations being immediately updated. This process is repeated until all specifications are satisfied. A third advantage of this method is that it is exactly the procedure that one would go through if doing this by hand. With a spreadsheet, many more blends can be evaluated in much less time, allowing the designer to try to improve over satisfactory blends to find the best of them. The resulting improved blends or cost savings are a fourth advantage of this approach. There is only one major disadvantage of using the spread- sheet. This is that most probably the best blend is not found. As an inexpensive introduction to computer-assisted blending, which can be easily understood and cost just a few hundred dollars, this is a recommended place to begin.

US mine operators frequently fail to investigate more cost effective and productive bulk material handling systems because surface mines seem to lend themselves to truck ore haulage. In this country, as a result, use of conveyors to move heavy loads from mine to process facilities has been minimized, if not actually neglected. In contrast, there are more than 50 conveyorized surface mines in successful operation around the world. These mine operators have learned that properly applied conveyorized systems can offer major savings in capital and operating costs, which contribute to improved profits when combined with other proven mining technologies. Growing acceptance and application of conveyorized bulk material handling in surface mines also points up how unique each mine is and how careful planning contributes to maximum mine effectiveness. Because of these differences, mining executives and technical and operating staffs need to develop an understanding of three factors in applying conveyorized bulk material handling in surface mines: • Why each mine will benefit from the type of automation permitted by conveyorized operation, •What kind of equipment is available, and • What applications most effectively demonstrate the first two factors in action - hauling either ore or waste. The conveyorized systems considered in this presentation have production rates from 0.5-2.7 kt/h (500-3,000 stph). Worldwide, these systems have been operating since the early 1960s. Advantages of Conveyors Why do you want conveyorized bulk material handling? First, it almost always provides lower operating and maintenance costs. Second, it frequently requires lower initial capital costs and almost always requires lower capital costs over the life of the surface mine. Third, it provides comparable operating availability, and finally, it frequently gives comparable operating flexibility - depending on the mine plan. Cost avoidance can be accomplished with modern production methods. These, in turn, permit increased productivity and reduced operating costs such as those for energy, maintenance, and manpower. It has been demonstrated in European surface mines and elsewhere, that conveyor systems frequently require lower initial costs than does truck haulage. Almost always such operations require lower capital costs over the mine life. Those costs include the continual addition of haulage trucks to both accommodate the increasingly difficult haulage routes and fulfill replacement requirements when trucks wear out. Conveyor systems handling ore in numerous large crushing and port facilities, which have operated since the early 1950s, have clearly demonstrated a useful conveyor life of more than 25 years. In contrast, off-highway trucks have life spans of six to eight years. The following examples illustrate comparative capital costs to purchase conveyor systems and comparable truck haulage units. Example 1 The ore haulage route from point A to point B is level and 610m (2,000 ft) long. The material weighs 1.8 t/m3 (110 lbs per cu ft) and must be transported at a rate of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph). The installed capital costs to provide a properly designed conveyor that will transport the described material from point A to B is about $450,000. The capital cost to purchase three 77-t (85-st) off-highway trucks and one spare truck - which would provide equivalent capacity - would be about $1.2 million. The truck cost estimate is based on a 6 min. or 771 kt/h (850 stph) truck cycle time. Truck efficiency is estimated at 0.8. Each 77-t (85-st) truck would have an actual haulage rate of 617 kt/h (680 stph). Therefore, three trucks would be necessary to transport the designated tonnage of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph). A movable crushing plant would be located at point A for the conveyors and a permanent crushing plant at point B for the truck haulage system. Capital costs for these primary crushing plants were not included in the calculations for either system because the capital costs are frequently comparable. Example 2 The transport route from point A to point B is 610 m (2,000 ft) horizontally and 122 m (400 ft) vertically - on a 20% grade (Fig. 1). The material weighs 1.8 t/m3 (110 lbs per cu ft) and must be moved at a rate of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph).

"Construction of the OceanaGold Haile operation’s process plant in Kershaw, South Carolina is currently under way, with ore through the mill expected in late 2016 and commercial production expected in early 2017. The process is designed to treat 6,350 tonnes per day with minor upgrades required to achieve 8,270 tonnes per day. Plant optimization during detailed engineering, combined with a focus on de-risking the process, has resulted in numerous process changes since the initial design. This paper describes the plant optimization and de-risking, it also presents a proven commissioning strategy modelled after OceanaGold’s Didipio operation, whilst identifying potential expansion opportunities. INTRODUCTION Haile Gold Mine is located in Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The last operation employed heap leaching from 1985 through 1992. Since then, the property has been closed and fully reclaimed. Romarco Minerals acquired the property in 2007, and began an exploration program that delineated 2.02Moz. of gold in reserve at an overall grade of 2.06 g/t. OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals and the Haile Operation in October of 2015. OceanaGold operates under a risk management philosophy in all aspects of operation, both corporately and at each individual business unit, and has implemented numerous process changes to eliminate or mitigate risks identified in the initial design of the processing circuit, and provided increased opportunity for optimization and expansion. This paper describes the plant optimization and de-risking, it also presents a proven commissioning strategy modelled after OceanaGold’s Didipio Operation, and identifies potential expansion opportunities. INITIAL PROCESSING CIRCUIT DESIGN An extensive metallurgical test work program was undertaken by Romarco Minerals and third party laboratories during the initial design phase of the Haile project [1]. This preliminary test work provided the technical information as a basis of plant design. The initial flow sheet for the Haile processing circuit is shown in Figure 1 (see APPENDIX). The plant is designed to process 6,350 tpd (7,000 stpd) on an annualized basis. The process begins with a jaw crusher followed by a SAG and ball mill grinding circuit to reduce particle size to P80 74 µm. A flash flotation cell treats 50% of the cyclone underflow in the ball mill circuit. Grinding circuit product is sent to a rougher flotation circuit to recover gold-bearing pyrite. The flotation concentrates from flash and rougher flotation are reground to P80 13 µm using stirred media detritors (SMD’s). The rougher flotation tail is pumped to the carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit for gold recovery. The reground concentrate is pre-aerated prior to being pumped to the CIL circuit. The CIL circuit is a hybrid circuit with eight tanks. Tank 1 leaches the pre-aerated concentrate only, and tanks 2 through 8 leach the combined flotation tailing and tank 1 discharge. The carbon strip circuit is a standard pressure Zadra system, followed by electrowinning, and refining using an induction furnace. CIL tailing passes through a cyanide recovery thickener prior cyanide destruction and then pumped to the tailing storage facility (TSF)."

As the world tension relaxes and as the interest and taste for consumer products change, complacency is beginning to prevail over the needs of minerals and primary metals. The current trend towards resources and energy conservation calls for miniaturization of consumer goods, and lowers the demand for virgin materials to produce goods and services. Challenged by the third world countries with high grade ores and low labor costs, industrialized nations with lower grade ores are being pressed into more efficient operation through technological innovation, while protecting the environment. In many countries, domestic mines were forced to close since the oil crises due to rapidly rising energy and labor costs. Research in conventional mineral processing needs to be directed towards breakthrough technologies in order to maintain the competitive edge in the global marketplace. Research activities will provide new challenges in the processing of solid waste and waste water for environmental remediation as well as for resource conservation, in the preparation of new functional materials of extreme purity and/or unique properties for high technology applications and in the development of such future resources as deep sea minerals and extraterrestrial materials.

The depressed economic condition resulting from normal cyclic behavior, a more fundamental structural alteration, or both, is a mandate for change within the mining industry. Although several strategies for change have been proposed, the option of applying high technology processes to this smokestack industry offers the greatest opportunity for regaining global competitiveness and a new vitality. Research and development to secure new technologies require a corporate commitment for substantive change, a tech¬nologically enlightened management, a well¬funded and stable science and engineering effort, and a dedicated and motivated technical team--features in short supply in the mining industry today. However, an alternative to in-house development of frontier technologies is available to this beleagured industry through entrepreneurial, high-tech companies. These entities, with their dedicated focus toward product development, motivated and streamlined teams, high productivity and efficiency, and low costs offer a unique opportunity for large corporations to obtain high-tech products and services. These commodities are available through traditional commercial channels and an array of creative business arrangements. The latter offers notable benefits to large companies including windows on frontier technologies and mitigation of risk. Likewise, entrepreneurial companies profit through manufacturing and marketing relationships and an expanded financial base.

With the rapidly growing use of hydraulics in mining equipment, maintenance personnel should be familiar with the various components in hydraulic systems. Hydraulic systems do wear out - the fluids they transport are hot and turbulent, the equipment they power often imposes tremendous pressure pulsations and bending stresses, and the working environment is harsh. Therefore, even though hydraulic hoses are made of remarkably trouble-free components, they do need to be replaced periodically. There must be coupling methods that allow hoses to be replaced without disturbing other components. Couplings must also provide a variety of leak-resistant connections between hoses and other components in the hydraulic circuitry. Threaded Connection and Seals Hydraulic coupling thread ends and sealing arrangements are standardized, with many types available. Their outward appearance varies, but coupling configurations are recognizable by examining threads and seals and comparing them to the examples provided here. Iron Pipe Thread There are two kinds of iron pipe threads normally used in mining equipment circuitry - National Pipe Tapered Thread for Fuels (NPTF) and National Pipe Straight Thread Mechanical Joint (NPSM). The NPTF seal is the engagement of the coupling threads, called thread interference. When tightened, the tapered thread of the male fitting binds into that tapered thread of the female fitting to form a relatively leakproof seal (Fig. 1). In the NPSM seal, there is a 30° angle seat machined into the end of the male NPTF fitting. This seat engages with a mating 30° angle cone on the inside of the female fitting. Female NPSM fittings have straight threads, as opposed to the tapered threads of the NPTF fittings. However, most NPTF solid male fittings also have a 30° angle seat enabling them to be used with NPSM female fittings (Fig. 2). JIC and SAE Fittings Joint Industry Conference (JIC) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) seals are formed by joining two mating, conical metal surfaces. The coupling threads are used to bring and hold these surfaces together to form a leak-resistant seal. A JIC connection is a solid male threaded end, with a 37° machined male nose, mating with a 37° female flare seat. When connected, the mating surfaces are held together by the threads, but the threads do not form the seal. The female seat is created by flaring a tube end or machining the interior surface of a stem to 37°. A female JIC has a swivel nut, allowing the sealing surfaces to be joined together without twisting a hose or twisting the seats against each other (Fig. 3). JIC couplings are frequently used on low, medium, or high pressure hydraulic circuits on mining equipment and machinery. The SAE connection is similar in appearance and sealing characteristics to the JIC system, except the angle of the machined male nose and female flare seat is 45° (Fig. 4). "O" Ring Fittings Seals for "O" ring fittings are formed by compressing an "O" ring against an exposed machined surface on a mounting block or hydraulic component part. The US Bureau of Mines investigated cold-cutting alternatives to oxyacetylene torch cutting of metal. The alternatives examined were a pneumatic circular saw with an abrasive cutting wheel, a handheld abrasive water-jet cutting tool, an ultrathermic-cutting system, hydraulic punches and cutters, and a pneumatic reciprocating hacksaw. Sparks generated with the pneumatic circular saw or ultrathermic-cutting system were not completely eliminated with the use of water sprays. The water sprays also reduced the cutting rate of the pneumatic circular saw by 70%. The safety and performance of a handheld abrasive water jet cutting system requires additional research. The hydraulic cutters and punches are readily available and do not introduce any hazards. However, they are not comparable in price to the oxyacetylene gas torch and many different attachments would be needed to replace the torch. The pneumatic reciprocating hacksaw, which did not produce any sparks, is an acceptable alternative in terms of cutting rates. However, the price of the saw and blades is not comparable to that of the oxyacetylene gas torch. The results of this study will further the advancement of safe, efficient alternatives to oxyacetylene gas torches, which will improve miner safety.

PREFACE The National Waste Terminal Storage Program was initiated to conduct the research to select a site for the disposal of high level radioactive waste in deep geologic formations. As part of this program, the Savannah River Laboratory at Aiken, South Carolina, is conducting geologic research of generic applicability on the potential subsurface damage to a repository from an earthquake. Part of this study involved the collection of data on subsurface damage due to an earthquake, and another part involved the calculation of displacement fields as a result of an earthquake. Both of these studies were conducted at Terra Tek of Salt Lake City. This report is an abridged and combined version of both studies which was presented at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference in Atlanta, GA, on June 19, 1979.

Theories are proposed to explain consistently a class of phenomena and are established with experiences, hypotheses, and laws. Not all concepts need to be presented in a mathematical format. A comminution theory must incorporate fracture physics, particle breakage, stressing events in crushers and mills, material transport, comminution kinetics and models, etc. In this paper the state of knowledge of some of these aspects is discussed. My comments today are directed toward western coal and its impact on Burlington Northern. I will be discussing three major topics. These are: location and extent of mining activities, the flows of this coal traffic into the various market territories, and finally the interaction of this western coal with coals found in the balance of the United States. When we at BN speak of western coal, we refer to those substantial deposits lying in southeastern Montana and north-eastern Wyoming. This territory covers many different coal formations. For the sake of simplicity, I will be referring to this general area as the Powder River Basin (or the "western" coal fields). This slide highlights the area overlayed by a map of the BN rail system. The U.S. Bureau of Mines estimates the demonstrated reserve base of Montana and Wyoming to be approximately 176 billion tons. Of this figure, about 73 billion tons is minable by surface methods. This is roughly 72% of the total strippable reserves in the western united states, BN does not have sole access to this coal for there are deposits in southern Wyoming near the union pacific railroad. I will say more about this later.

INTRODUCTION The principal OSHA standards dealing with tunneling activities are found in 29 CFR Part 1926. A reference for the applicable subparts which apply to tunneling is included as Appendix A. In addition, some standards from 29 CFR Part 1910 have been identified as applicable to construction and are included in the recent printing of an interim vertical standard for construction (1910/1926 Project). The remainder of this presentation will be focused on past OSHA activities to revise Subpart S of 1926, the principal subpart dealing with tunnel construction.
