Recent ore pass failures have underlined the need for improved designs, standards, structural monitoring methods, and better hang up prevention and removal techniques. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating methods to improve safety during transport of ore in ore passes. Design criteria and hang-up prevention and remediation strategies involve studies of the effects of static and dynamic ore and waste rock loads on chutes, walls, gates, and support structures. Particle flow analysis methods were used to simulate the response of various ore pass designs to a wide range of ore loading conditions. A full-scale mock-up of actual ore pass and chute assemblies was duplicated and tested for load response. Data from a particle flow code and the mock-ups were com-pared. Loads on an active ore pass chute were measured.

Red mud has been reported as a potential resource for lithium. To investigate the leaching behavior of lithium, a lithium-rich red mud was neutralized with hydrochloric or oxalic acid and then leached with acetic acid. When red mud was neutralized using dilute hydrochloric acid, about 58 to 60 percent of lithium was leached with 25 percent acetic acid at 95 °C for 60 min, while more than 95 percent of sodium and 85 percent of calcium were dissolved in the leachate solution. When oxalic acid was used to neutralize red mud prior to acetic acid leaching, lower lithium leaching efficiencies of about 42 to 47 percent were observed. Nevertheless, these leaching efficiencies of lithium were close to that of calcium and much higher than those of sodium under the same conditions. In this study, 25 percent (v/v) of acetic acid at 85 °C for 60 min was demonstrated to be the optimum conditions for lithium extraction from oxalic acid-neutralized red mud using acetic acid. The results are useful and of interest for lithium recovery and purification from red mud.

US coal production increased 3% to a record 832 Mt (917 million st) in 1987, according to preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. Most of the increase was due to the unusually warm summer and the increased coal-fired electricity demand for air conditioning. Drought conditions in the Northwest lowered hydroelectric generation, contributing to the higher use of coal by electric utilities. However, excess production capacity and increased competition from natural gas added further downward pressure on delivered coal prices, continuing the declining price trend of the last several years. Coal production by region Appalachian coal production reached 402 Mt (443 million st) in 1987. This is about 3% more than in 1986 and just short of its 1984 peak. Virginia produced 7% more than its 1986 level, due to increased coal-based electricity demand. Smaller percentage increases were attained in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Ohio and Alabama were the only major coal-producing states in Appalachia that produced less coal in 1987 than in the previous year. In the Interior region, 1987 coal production reached a record 182 Mt (201 million st), about 2% above 1986. Illinois is the largest coal-producing state in that region. Production there fell about 3.7%, primarily because of lowered demand at electric utility plants in Alabama and Tennessee. However, this was more than offset by production increases in western Kentucky, Texas, and Indiana. After falling slightly in 1986, coal production in the West resumed its upward trend to a record 248 Mt (273 million st). Wyoming is that region's dominant coal producer. It mined 7% more coal than in 1986. Wyoming's increase offset the 11% decline in New Mexico production and smaller declines in other Western states. Coal consumption and prices Domestic coal consumption reached a record 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Most of the increase resulted from the unusually warm summer that led to higher than normal peak demands for electricity in the third quarter. Electric utility coal consumption was also boosted by the below-normal hydroelectric generation that resulted from low water levels in the Northwest. These factors more than offset the effects of increased nuclear power generation and competition from natural gas. As a result, coal provided 56.9% of electric utility generation in 1987, compared with 55.7% in 1986. Electric utilities consumed a record 651 Mt (718 million st) of coal. While electric utility coal consumption increased, the average cost of coal to utilities was down, from $1.58 per million Btu in 1986 to $1.52 in 1987. The average price of coal delivered to utilities in 1987 was $35.09/t ($31.84 per st), the lowest since 1981. Coal prices were held down by a glut of coal supplies and by a decline in the average price of natural gas to electric utilities. Coal consumption at coke plants in 1987 was 2.6% above the 1986's 32.5 Mt (36 million st). This increase reflects steel's recent resurgence. Coking coal demand, though, was reduced by the increased use of continuous casting and electric furnace technologies. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants fell from $56.02 to $51.35/t ($50.83 to $46.59 per st). Coal consumption in the industries other than coke plants amounted to 68.2 Mt (75.2 million st) in 1987, slightly less than in 1986. Coal lost part of its market share to natural gas, which was priced favorably relative to coal. The average price of coal delivered to manufacturing plants was at its lowest level of the current decade. It fell from $39.50/t in 1986 to $37.27/t ($35.84 to $33.81 per st). Residential and commercial coal consumption fell to 6.2 Mt (6.9 million st) that is 9.8% below 1986 and the lowest since 1980. This decline is also attributed to the relatively low price of natural gas in 1987. Coal stocks Coal consumers held 169 Mt (186 million st) of coal stocks at the end of 1987, 5.9% above the 1986 year-end level. Most of this increase was due to stockpiling by electric utilities in anticipation of a possible strike by the United Mine Workers of America early in 1988. Stocks at electric utilities increased to an estimated 154 Mt (171 million st) at the end of 1987, 5.6% higher than the previous year. This was much lower than 1984's stock buildup. Coke plants increased their coal stocks by 30% in 1987 to 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st), rebounding from the unusually low inventories of 1985 and 1986. Pelletizing studies were conducted to find ways of improving the metallurgical properties of acid and fluxed pellets. In acid pellets, melting temperature was controlled by the formation of low melting temperature fayalite during reduction. Formation of a permeable metallic shell during reduction allows diffusion of reducing gas to the pellet core, decreasing fayalite formation. With fluxed pellets, slag chemistry had the main influence on metallurgical properties. Mineralogical, chemical and structural transformations that occur during reduction were studied at various intervals for a number of Mesabi Range pellet types. Six pellet types were selected for further investigation based on significant differences in softening/melting characteristics. Retention of porosity in the metallic shell was found to be the overriding factor in determining softening/melting behavior.

"Recirculation is prohibited in many coal mining countries because of the fear that the re-use of return air would allow the build-up of air contaminants at the workings. The incorrect design and location of a booster fan in any ventilation network can create unsafe condition due to recirculation. The current approach to investigating recirculation using simulation software requires manual effort which becomes tedious in a complex and a large network. An algorithm-based C++ program was designed to detect the recirculation in a booster fan ventilation networks. This program needed an input file prepared from output file generated by any ventilation simulator. This program created an output file for recirculation. This program demonstrated the strong capability to detect the recirculation in a sample network and a coal mine ventilation network. The outcomes of this program were documented in this paper. INTRODUCTION The proper design and location of booster fans eliminate the safety hazards associated with high main fan pressure. Conversely, the incorrect design of booster fans in any ventilation network can create unsafe conditions due to uncontrolled recirculation. The proper utilization of a booster fan derives benefits to reduce the main fan pressure, leakage, and consequently ventilation cost especially with high resistance network due to deep and extensive working area in a mine. However installation of booster fan may create uncontrolled recirculation, if it is not sized and located properly with respect to main fan. Recirculation is prohibited in many coal mining countries because of the fear that the reuse of return air would allow the build-up of air contaminants at the workings. Therefore, it is imperative to check the recirculation while designing and operating booster fan for a ventilation network. This paper deals with an algorithm based C++ program to detect the recirculation in a booster fan ventilation networks. This program was implemented to detect the recirculation in a sample network and a coal mine network. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The currently available ventilation simulation programs do not give much information about recirculation for the generated solution (fan pressures). The current approach to investigating recirculation using simulation software requires manual effort, i.e., traversing from node to node in the output network by the simulator while keeping tracks of all the nodes that form recirculation paths. This is an easy task in a simple ventilation network, but it becomes tedious and sometimes very confusing in a complex and large network. Moreover, the presence of multiple recirculation paths makes the manual effort more complex and difficult, especially in separating multiple loops that are connected together. Thus, there is a need for a more efficient program that will detect and quantify the recirculation efficiently, for the generated fan pressures. A program is developed to detect the recirculation(s) in a network."

Consolidation Coal Company, through the mining research division of Continental Oil Company, is now undertaking the installation of a full-scale hydraulic transportation system to carry coarse coal from the mine face to the preparation plant. The facility will include all elements of a fully integrated haulage system including face haulage for both longwall and continuous miner sections, multiple slurry feeds, hydraulic hoisting and 2.4 miles of overland slurry transport. This undertaking is a result of more than six years of extensive research and testing, some of which has been previously releasted to the literature. To provide a reference framework for system description, a brief history of recent coal mining technological developments will be discussed. Following World War II, mechanization resulted in mining machines that were bigger, faster, more powerful, and more reliable. These changes were essentially refinements in an established mining system. They made mining more efficient than before, but they did not change the system itself. By about the mid-1960's, it was apparent that further improvements in the extraction machinery would have a declining payoff, simply because .the worst bottlenecks were in other components of the mining system. A modern continuous miner cannot be run continuously because other operations underground cannot keep pace. In fact, most continuous miners today run at less than 20% of capacity. Consequently, in 1969 Consol and its parent company, Continental Oil, undertook a long-range R&D program to try to change the basic haulage system for the better. Most coal at present is removed from the mine by a hand-off system in which the coal is transferred from the continuous miner to a shuttle car, often with the aid of a separate loader; then from the shuttle car to a system of conveyor belts; and finally from the conveyors to rail cars. The system involves a large amount of moving equipment underground, many transfer points, and the everpresent chance of operational delays and safety hazards. By removing the haulage bottleneck, we believe we can speed up underground operations substantially; and perhaps more important, we could make it feasible to develop a whole new generation of mining equipment that is inherently safer. What we wanted was a truly flexible, continuous haulage system with inherent safety advantages. Ideally the system had to meet three major requirements: First, the coal had to enter the transport system at the face, and remain in that same system all the way to the preparation plant. Second, the system had to be flexible and extensible so that it could- follow the mining machine as it advances and retracts. And, third, the system must be inherently safer than current haulage technology.

Mine-to-mill optimization is a holistic approach to the optimization of mining and processing operations. Developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, it attempts to minimize energy consumption through the optimization of the particle size reduction process. The approach involves sampling and modeling of blasting and processing, computer simulation to optimize the operation and develop alternatives, implementation of the most promising alternatives, and sampling to quantify energy savings. The primary objective of the present effort is to adapt mine-to-mill technology to the aggregates industry. This paper presents an update of work being conducted at quarries operated by the Luck Stone Corporation of Richmond, Virginia.

Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) is the preferred method of gold recovery om cyanided plp. However, other gold adsorbents (namely, ton-exchange resms) are being introduced to the industry as they are considered to have several advantages over carbon for the recoery of gold. A set of test methods have been developed by the industry to evaluate the quality of different carbons. owever, many ?f these tests are not applicable to evaluating ton-exchange resms. Hence, a need has arisen for a method to evaluate the different adsorbents. This paper introduces a philosophy to evaluate an adsorbent that results in an estimation of the capital cost and the operating cost associated with the adsorbent. Tests that have been devel­ oped to evaluate the ability of an adsorbent to adsorb gold (in­solutton . counter-current) and to evaluate the optimum adsorbent for a specific pulp (in-pulp batch) are introduced. A method of converting the test data into an economic dimension is present­ed. Case studies are presented to highlight the discussion.

The federal standard for limiting exposures to miners from radon daughters was reduced from 12 working level months (WLM) per year to 4 WLM per year in 1971. However, even at that time some researchers were concerned that the new limit would eventually be shown to result in an excess risk for lung cancer mortality in miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is now engaged in a comprehensive review of this topic. As the lead agency in this project, NIOSH has developed a work plan and established a work group to implement this plan. The procedure and specific considerations are outlined in the work plan for developing a comprehensive ionizing radiation standard recommendation for all miners, underground and surface. Such a recommendation will not only include estimates of health risks at various levels of exposure, but also appropriate recommendations for medical monitoring, sampling and analytical methods, sampling strategies, posting, engineering controls, personal protective equipment and recordkeeping. The work group has twenty-four members. Eleven members are NIOSH personnel representing six divisions of the Institute. The remaining thirteen members represent other federal agencies, specifically the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior, the Mine Safety and Health Administration and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the Department of Labor, the Office of Radiation Protection of the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Bureau of Radiological Health of the Food and Drug Administration, Department of Health and Human Services. Several factors contributed to the decision to initiate this project. First, the efficacy of the current standard was considered. An initial study group was formed in the spring of 1980 by NIOSH to identify and evaluate articles that contained information on lung cancer mortality risks at and below the present permissible exposure limit. The conclusion drawn from their evaluation was that a two-fold excess risk of lung cancer mortality at and below 120 cumulative working level months (CWLM) of exposure to radon daughters is evident. This composite indication from selected studies was of sufficient magnitude to justify further evaluation. The study group, however, recognized that other studies and information must also be considered in a quantitative risk assessment which would form the basis for recommending an acceptable and feasible permissible exposure limit. A second factor in the decision to pursue further evaluation was the gaps in the current standard that had previously been identified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). These included lack of medical monitoring of underground miners and absence of regulations for surface miners. The seriousness of the health hazard relative to other hazards in mining was also considered. Along with exposures to silica and asbestos fibers, radiation was judged to be one of the major health hazards in mining, These combined factors constituted the justification to develop criteria and recommendations for improved mandatory health standards. The development process begins with a survey and review of the available world-wide information on the topic, including data and information developed by NIOSH. The end product of this review is to be a document that will contain an evaluation of the collected information and support for any recommendations that are made. To develop this document, the present work group has been divided into five task groups with the following emphases: Health Effects, Medical Aspects, Monitoring, Environmental Exposures, and Engineering Controls and Work Practices. The Health Effects task group is to evaluate the evidence from epidemiologic and animal studies of adverse health effects associated with all forms of ionizing radiation encountered in mining and milling operations. The "weight-of-evidence" of the results of all relevant and useful studies will be summarized, with the reasons for emphasizing the cited studies. The critical cells or tissues and the factors that should be considered in estimating the dose to these areas from various types of radiation will be identified. An evaluation will be made of the possible impacts of smoking and exposure to diesel exhaust on the determination of health effects related to radiation. The implications of biologically redundant dose in terms of the time between tumor initiation and death will also be analyzed. The Medical Aspects task group is to review the generally-accepted and the state-of-the-art medical technology for the detection of adverse health effects from ionizing radiation exposure. An evaluation will be made of the accuracy of urine and fecal analysis, wholebody counting, chromosome analysis and nose blows, as well as their usefulness for early detection of adverse health effects. Early detection is of little utility to the affected individual unless subsequent medical care can improve the prognosis. Recommendations for screening tests will be made after carefully considering the accuracy of the diagnostic procedures and the usefulness of early detection. Required recordkeeping and transfer rights will also be addressed. The Monitoring task group is to consider the state-of-the-art technology for the monitoring of occupational radiation exposures. Instrumentation, sampling strategies and analytical procedures will be reviewed for both personal and area sampling. The implications of the associated levels of confidence for non-compliance decisions will be evaluated. The discussion will also include an evaluation of the feasibility of replacing present monitoring systems with recent technology and the impact that a possible lower permissible exposure limit would have on monitoring requirements. The Environmental Exposure task group is to investigate the field procedures and mathematical methodologies which have been used to quantitate exposure levels to the various kinds of ionizing radiation. The magnitude and direction of the possible biases in past exposure assessments will be estimated. Specific attention will be given to the controversies concerning the quantification of the biological dose equivalent and the feasibility of recommending standards for mixed radiation exposures which use "rem" as the unit of measurement. This paper presents a laboratory simulation of regrinding and resulting dust generation. An Automated Rotary Coal Cutting Simulator (ARCCS) was modified to conduct regrinding experiment. In order to estimate the effects of coal properties and operating parameters on regrinding and dust generation, an orthogonal fractional factorial experimental design was implemented in regrinding experiment. Marple personal cascade impactors, Series 290, were used to measure dust concentration during experiment. Three types of coal seams, namely, Waynesburg, Pittsburgh, and Lower Kittanning, were used to represent different coal properties. Experimental results and complete parametric analysis were presented.

The ever-increasing power (and decreasing cost) of computers has opened up substantial oppor¬tunities for 'Vision'-based systems in both on-line and off-line control. This paper reviews image analysis applications in use at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) for: •blast and mill feed size monitoring; •AG/SAG mill model-based control; •mineral liberation; and •froth flotation control. The SPLIT™ image analysis system is being used to estimate muck pile and ROM feed sizings. AG/SAG mill feed sizing is being used in a dynamic model for mill control. A new generation mineral liberation analyzer has been developed with Philips Electron Optics. The Philips-JKMRC mineral liberation analyzer offers a substantial improvement in resolution and speed over previous developments. While on-line liberation control continues to be something of a pipe dream, measuring liberation "one shift behind" is now feasible. A robust instrument has been developed to measure flotation froth bubble size and velocity. The instrument also derives a parameter that allows different froth textures to be distinguished. The instrument has been used for on-line control in coal and sulfide flotation. For coal froth, an online ash estimate has been achieved at one site and is being tested at other sites. Overall, image analysis is finding many applications in mineral processing and control.

The ultimate objective of mine design is to determine the development and untilization of mining resources. Computer Aided Design (CAD) and automated mapping are becoming very popular in engineering and in mining. Any computer program which produces a design or model with the interaction of an engineer can be considered computer-aided design (CAD), but' the term CAD is often associated with interactive graphic design and mapping capabilities. Graphics can be effectively used to describe and model two-or-three dimensional mine workings, orebodies, and geologic structures. Interactive computer graphics is applied to mine design with a combination of deposit modeling techniques and the use of AutoCAD for interactive graphics and mapping. The combined system can perform a large part of the calculations and drafting work for geologic and mining design. Using computer calculation and graphics techniques, comparisons of alternatives, can be made quickly.

Biodegradation of cyanide by microorganisms isolated from solids previously exposed to cyanide has been investigated. The anaerobic cyanide biodegradation showed good, short-term removal of cyanide in the presence of nutrients (medium A). This system retained metabolic activity at cyanide concentrations up to 300 ppm at pH 10.5. Microscopic examination of stained specimens revealed that the bacteria were Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacilli. Strains capable of cyanide decomposition were identified as Pseudomonas and Alcaligenes. The kinetics of biodegradation were found to be first order with respect to cyanide concentration, and the overall reaction rate constant is k = 0.102 day-1. Studies with Na14CN showed that 17 % of 14C transformation went into the cells, 18 % into carbonate and 47 % into bicarbonate.

The first rule of mineral deposits always seems to be: the deposit is never close to the market. With gems and precious metals, this is not much of a problem. But with most of the mineral commodities used in today's world, transportation becomes a major part of the cost to the consumer. In Japan, for example, more than 60% of the cost of coal to the consumer may be attributed to transportation. The purpose of this article is to examine pipeline transportation, particularly mineral slurry pipelines, as a means of getting the mineral to market. Pipelines Today Regulated pipelines in the US totaled nearly 724 Mm (450,000 miles) in 1980 according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Worldwide, more than 210 Mm (125,000 miles) of new pipelines will start construction in 1982 at an estimated cost of more than $150 billion. According to the Bechtel Corp., the period between 1982 and 2000 will see major growth in pipelines of all kinds. In North America, major movements of crude oil from Alaska and synfuels from the Rocky Mountains will require the construction of nearly 16 Mm (10,000 miles) of new pipelines. Nearly 42 Mm (26,000 miles) of new gas transmission pipelines will be needed to tap both US and Canadian arctic gas fields and move the gas to major markets on both coasts. Other pipelines will be required to move additional quantities of natural gas from the Rocky Mountains to more populous regions. Bechtel says more than 24 Mm (15,000 miles) of slurry pipelines will be needed to transport coal from both eastern and western coal provinces to the Mississippi valley and coastal areas. In 1980, 125 companies delivered more than 1 km3 (6.5 billion bbl) of crude oil and 652 hm3 (4.1 billion bl) of products in the US. At the same time natural gas pipelines transported 498 km3 (17.6 trillion cu ft). The reported investment by these companies was nearly $20 billion at the end of 1980. Advantages of Pipeline Transportation The obvious success and vitality of the oil and gas pipeline industry is based, at least in part, on the fact that pipelines are a very efficient and low-cost method of transportation. This fact, coupled with the need for lower cost trans¬portation, has led to the marriage of oil and gas transmission technology and the bulk mineral solids transportation industry. The off-spring of this marriage is the mineral slurry pipeline. Slurry pipelines have a number of advantages over other transportation methods. One of these is the fact that they are buried-out-of-sight, out-of-mind. Second, they are relatively small users of labor because they lend themselves to automation and remote, or even computer control. Third, they offer an attractive economic alternative to other transportation systems. For example, for a 1000 km (621 miles) distance, rail costs of 1?/ km (1.7?/ton-mile) are about equivalent to slurry pipeline costs. But, as the distance increases, pipeline cost per t-km continues to drop while equivalent rail charges remain essentially insensitive to distance. Where existing rail, barge, or ocean ships are available, the cost of new construction associated with a slurry pipeline probably will render it noncompetitive. However, where new rail or other construction is needed, the cost of a slurry pipeline is very competitive. About three-fourths of the cost of a pipeline is in pipe, fittings, and construction. Nearly a fifth of the investment is in pump stations and the remainder is in right-of-way, surface facilities, utility acquisition, communication facilities, and other support areas. The fact that pipelines are capital intensive is, at the present time, a mixed blessing. For example, the delivered cost of coal in a hypothetical project doubles when the cost of money rises from 9% to 17.5% per year. The largest cost element for delivered coal in this example is in depreciation and finance charges. The next largest cost element is electricity to power the pumps, with labor making up the smallest increment of the delivered cost of coal. World Slurry Pipelines The idea of a slurry pipeline was probably first investigated in the latter 19th century, but the first ones were successfully built and operated in the US in the early 1900s. Today, they are fairly common worldwide. Table 1 shows a number of the world's slurry pipelines. An examination of these will further emphasize the fact that pipelines provide a cost competitive alternative where new construction of a transportation system is required. In each of the examples, the desired mineral commodity is located in a remote corner of the world, markets are at a great distance, value of the commodity is not great, and no other transport system is available.

Operation of a pilot-scale Floatex density separator was studied using a pyrite concentrate slurry feed. Experimental measurements were further utilized in parameterization of a hindered settling simulation model. The model incorporates particle slip velocity calculation and also a separation efficiency function, adjusted to describe the feed material characteristics. The model was used to compute the overflow and underflow compositions when both fluidization bed pressure and teeter water flow rates were varied. In addition, prediction accuracy and the model validity were evaluated. The simulations gave good results when the teeter interstitial velocities were moderate enough to avoid excessive turbulence in the fluidization. Prediction of the cumulative overflow and underflow size distributions in most experiments yielded essentially less than 10% relative error between the sample data and the estimated value of the 50% passing sizes.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to secure local aggregate resources that meet quality standards and local restrictions without conflicts with other land uses and environmental regulations. The successful integration of natural-resource information into land-use decisions is becoming increasingly important as the needs for both land and resources become more numerous, complex and urgent. Well-reasoned decisions about land-use are crucial to the Nation if infrastructure resources are to remain economically available. Provisions for uninterrupted future supplies of aggregate should be made using proper long-range planning that incorporate a multiple land-use program. That program would include identification and protection of natural resources, strategies that will permit development of resources according to future market needs and environmental considerations, and the beneficial reclamation of mined-out areas.

"The objective of this research is to develop and apply computer models to evaluate the potential lightning impacts on underground coal-mining. These models can then be utilised to assist in the design of effective controls. This project will provide a significantly improved level of knowledge and control over current lightning abatement techniques. The findings may also be applied to open cut and coal preparation situations. Computer modelling identified that by isolating cased boreholes from underground conductive media such as roof mesh, and placing spacings between roof mesh the risk of an ignition can be reduced by more than a factor of ten. These controls should be applied in conjunction with minimising the potential for a flammable atmosphere to exist underground and ensuring that there is no transmission medium for the lightning to reach the atmosphere. INTRODUCTION The objective of this research was to develop and apply computer models to evaluate the potential lightning impacts on underground coal-mining. These models could then be utilised to assist in the design of effective controls. If successful this project would provide a significantly improved level of knowledge and control over current lightning abatement techniques. The direct potential for harm from lightning has long been recognised for the surface facilities of coal mines. However recent events at Blakefield South in NSW on January 5 2011 (DTI, 2011) and at Sago mine in the USA in 2006 (MSHA, 2007) have suggested that there is potential for lightning to cause significant damage to the underground workings of a coal mine. A very detailed analysis carried out by as part of the MSHA investigation into the SAGO disaster by Sandia Laboratories identified at least ten other incidents over the past thirteen years where lightning had probably caused the ignition of a sealed goaf area of a mine (SANDIA, 2011). In addition there is a long history of lightning related incidents in South African coal mines (Geldenhuys, 1985). Fortunately in those cases no lives were lost. The event at Blakefield South has suggested that there may be the potential for ignition to occur in an active longwall goaf. The potential for a lightning strike to ignite a flammable atmosphere in an underground coal mine has been demonstrated from the past experience both here and overseas. It requires three things: • Lightning • A mechanism to convey the lightning underground to the flammable atmosphere • A flammable atmosphere."

The Hallmark Distribution Center is one of the most sophisticated material handling and order filling facilities in the world. The 53 million cubic foot facility houses an ultra-modern, computer- monitored distribution complex that handles as many as 1/4 million orders per day. The Distribution Center replaces 16 leased buildings scattered through- out metropolitan Kansas City and, in addition, re-leased 4 floors in mid-town Kansas City needed for creative and administrative expansion. This new facility is the nerve center for distribution of Hallmark products in United States and Latin America. The size and gross numbers of all parts of the system is a significant accomplishment, but the purpose of this paper is to explain the technical advancements in the state-of-the-art of material handling and controls. The system iteself is made up of seven sub-systems including receiving, warehousing, picking rack stocking, towline, order filling, order sorting, and shipping. Significant techniques were used in each of these areas as well as technical advancements in the state-of-the- art. The most significant points are in 4 of the areas and are discussed in this paper.

The planning of experiments and the importance of statistical interpretation of the results have been recognized for years by scientists and engineers. The Factorial Design of experiments is among the various methods used for this purpose and is being widely applied in all branches of research and production. The basic principles of this tool have been described in detail (1, 2, 3, 4) and several examples of its application in various fields have been published (5). In recent years the mineral industry has also used Factorial Design to improve the efficiency of research, testwork and plant operation (6, 7, 8, 9). This method permits for a qualitative determination of the influence of the variables studied in a process and also a qualitative measure of the interaction of the variables. By graphic means or derivative methods, one may also establish the optimum conditions of the process (ibid 7, 8, 9). It is desirable, however, to develop mathematical methods to evaluate quantitatively these effects and restrict the optimization to the practical limitations of the variables. It is also convenient to adopt a notation system to generalize the Factorial Design.
