Explanations for commodity price levels (or movements) commonly focus on the fundamentals of supply and demand otherwise they are simply assigned to speculative activity. Comparisons of metal-price histories to monetary and other economic data support the argument that the supply of and demand for money are no less important in the determination of price than are the supply and demand of the commodity itself. That these relationships should exist is evident in the price identity and they are consistent with monetary theory. The patterns developed have limited usefulness as predictors, but their recognition is essential for the construction of price scenarios for planning purposes.

INTRODUCTION Tens of deposits in' coal basins of Western and Eastern Siberia are being open-mined with the technology of overburden rehandling into the mined out space of pits by excavators - draglines. This technology is preferred due to the high productive Russian equipment, comparatively low cost, and relatively small Influence exerted on the environment. The basic tendency of the last decades is the aspiration for enlarging the sphere of the' technology application for development of gentle and steeply dipping seams with the use of blast destruction of overburden and with combined winning of loose alluviums and rock partings. Complex technological schemes with multiple rehandling are widely used. In addition to it, stripping workings, intermediate storage of mineral resources, placing of transport dumps, and engineering construction can be realized with the use of draglines. More than ten of dragline faces are simultaneously exploited in some pits, and the rehandling coefficient ranks from 0.1 to 8. Here, conditions of winning and placing (position of a face and existing dump) are varying in space and time; this leads to the necessity of reconsidering the order for conduction of works (schemes) within the current designing. By now, in order to this, it is required to realize complex engineering calculations by graph-analytical methods and definite experience. The need is available for automatization of this process by creation of the corresponding software. The software is to: • Orient on the active pits and use information on the existing geology, equipment, and situation in mine. • Calculate the existing schemes more operative and on a higher qualitative level to model their development in a pit space with parameter optimization. • Predict situations demanding to change the existing technology for mining operations and recommend optimal technological schemes. METHODOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS FOR MODELING The problem is not new, it has more than fifty year-old history of creating mathematical models algorithms, and programs in Russia, Ukraine, USA, Canada. Australia and other countries with the developed mining branch. Conventionally, all population of programs can be divided into three groups depending on goal and interval of prediction: • Long-term programs used in designing and intended for substantiation of the nine capacity, selection of mining system, establishment of limits for applying the technology of overburden rehandling. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has developed a hardrock cutting concept and incorporated it into an extraction system called the ripper miner. This concept uses a single, wide bit that attacks the rock at a shallow angle and slow speed. Research has demonstrated that the system is capable of excavation rates exceeding those possible with conventional drill-blast and can effectively cut rock too hard for conventional roadheaders or continuous mining machines. It has the additional advantages of low bit wear and dust generation. This highly flexible concept is applicable to both mining and driving development openings and can cut any material from coal to hard rock. A single rip-per miner can perform the functions of a continuous mining machine, a roadheader excavator, and a tunnel boring machine. This paper presents the history of the development of the ripper miner from the initial laboratory tests through the construction and testing of the full-scale, lab prototype. It includes a comparison of the ripper miner to systems currently used from the standpoint of energy efficiencies and operating costs.

The mining industry’s commitment to innovation reflects a history of adopting technological advancements to enhance workplace safety, environmental sustainability and vocational training. The objective of this research was to develop an augmented- reality (AR) system for heavy-equipment operators (HEOs) in surface mining. The developed system has the potential to enhance mine safety, training and data-driven decision- making, which presents a significant step toward a more sustainable, effective and technologically driven mining training, contributing to the industry’s evolution and growth. The AR training system leverages Microsoft’s Power Platform and HoloLens 2 capacities to provide operators with detailed and immersive training guides for three mining equipment, including bulldozers, motor graders and haul trucks. AR guides combine speech controls, 3D objects, informative images and explicative videos in the real working conditions to enhance the operator’s learning process. The system has the potential to modify the training structure based on user performance and provides an efficient approach to data collection during training. This project was developed and applied through a case study in a surface mine in the Southern United States.

INTRODUCTION Radiation is one of the many agents occurring in our environment that is capable of causing cancers. We are all unavoidably exposed to natural background radiation. If we wish to exploit the beneficial uses of radiation in medicine, industry, and for the production of electricity, some further exposures to radiation are almost inevitable. One needs to ensure therefore, that the standards of radiation protection are safely derived and one would want to understand the mechanism by which radiation might cause cancer and genetic defects. In order to study the effects of radiation one can: (1) analyze human data, (2) perform animal experiments, and (3) do molecular level experiments. Indeed all three kinds of information are needed. This paper will concentrate on the steps required to obtain some of the necessary human data regarding health effects, where the concern is about the impact and consequences of long-term low-level exposures to an agent. Such investigations require some knowledge of work histories, dose histories, health "outcomes", and the personal identification of the individual involved. Three inter-related computer systems have been developed at Statistics Canada which have been designed to permit optimal use of a number of different records for our entire country for such health related research. The development of the Canadian Mortality Data Base, the initiation of the National Cancer Incidence Reporting System, and the development of new computer linkage techniques have helped reduce the cost and increase the scale and efficiency of automated follow-up to produce statistics of sickness or death associated with radiation and other carcinogenic agents in mines. These computer systems have already been implemented, and references will be made to studies currently being conducted using these files and facilities (e.g. a study of all Ontario miners, plus various Canadian uranium, fluorospar, salt and nickel miners). We will also look at the kinds of data that need to be collected now, to improve such studies in the future. DELAYED RISKS - THE STUDY SIZE AND COST Delayed effects on human health, as for example industrially caused cancer, can in general only be detected and measured by following-up the individuals to see what eventually becomes of them. What is not generally recognized is that the relatively low levels of individual risk, about which the public is often concerned, usually requires for their detection that very large numbers of "exposed" and "control" individuals (e.g. 10,000 to 100,000 or more) be followed over a period of two or three decades to determine when they die, what they die of, and whether they contracted cancer or some other disease of special concern. Thus, it is frequently exceedingly difficult to make such investigations cost-effective so that they will be undertaken at all, and as a result very real risks to health can remain undetected or unquantified. THE MANUAL PROCEDURES Follow-up of individuals by epidemiologists has until recently been a largely manual and clerical operation. It has used a diversity of source record files; local, regional, and national. Often the tracing of people has involved letters sent through the mails and visits to institutions, physicians, municipal offices, and former neighbours. Only thus could one find out whether the individuals were dead or alive. Such studies were necessarily small, or else very expensive. Death registrations have, by tradition, provided a valuable tool for the identification of harmful influences in the environment. However, with the increasing mobility in the population, death may often occur far away from the place of exposure to such an influence. Thus, no longer will simple manual searches in a single registry office suffice to inform the investigator concerning the deaths that may have occurred in a study population, especially when that population is large. In the past, manual follow-up to locate the relevant death registration normally required some prior knowledge of the province and year of death in question, so that the alphabetic indexes could he used to direct researchers to the appropriate bound volumes of registration forms. To search manually in this fashion for any large number of death registrations, without knowing in which year or province the deaths had taken place, or even whether they had yet occurred, would be impractical, since each year in Canada there are about 170,000 deaths. DEATH AND CANCER AS SPECIAL ENDPOINTS Much of recent effort has been focused on the organization of the "endpoint" files required to do long-term follow-up studies on a national scale, because that is a function which other institutions are unable to perform due to the confidentiality laws governing the use of such information. Outside organizations generally come to us with detailed "starting" point records which relate to some specific group requiring study. A laboratory fixed bed reactor was used in a study of generating clean thermal energy from coal fine refuse-limestone agglomerates. The major operation variables, including Ca/S mole ratio, agglomerate size, air flow rate and temperature, which affect the rate of sulfur fixation and combustible material utilization, have been examined. The test results show that 70 percent or more of sulfur fixation and 100% of combustible material utilization can be achieved depending upon sorbent, agglomeration, and combustion conditions. The coal fine refuse limestone pellet combustion process (CLC process) requires a simple flowsheet to convert coal fine refuse as a clean solid fuel, while meeting the strict air quality standards for SO2 emissions into the atmosphere. The CLC process is an attractive method to clean up coal slurry impoundments to protect our environment.

"The paper presents a brief overview of the long mining history and the more recent political development in the Slovak and Czech Republics as well as in Norway and Sweden. Mining used to be very important sources of economic wealth in the four countries, but in today’s economy does exploitation of non-energy minerals usually account for less than one per cent of the GNP. The paper will discuss and compare the mining legislation, land use planning and mineral policies framework in the four countries and how this may influence sustainable management of mineral resources including planning for mineral supply, landbanks and sterilisation of resources. In the present work compared flotation kinetics of apatite with four different collectors was established. Sodium oleate and rice bra~ oil were used to represent conventional collectors. The new collectors included a sulfosuccinate and a sulfosuccinamate. It was observed that the collection ability of each reagent was very dependent upon the mineral size ranges. The results-were analyzed in terms of size-by-size recovery curves. Flotation rates were also very dependent on size ranges of the mineral particles. One of the new collectors displayed higher flotation rates for coarser particles than the other reagents tested. Synergetic effects were also apparent when a conventional collector was mixed to a new collector.

Long before excavation begins, the in situ stresses in the horizon of planned underground chambers can be measured by employing the hydrofracturing technique in existing exploratory holes. Such measurements produce the stress magnitudes and directions required for the rational design of rock structures. Two recent case histories are cited in which preexcavation stress measurements for the design of underground powerhouses proved very beneficial in the orientation of the chambers and the estimation of the stability and required support. A third stress measurement case is related to the preexcavation design of tunnels that will house doughnut-shaped superconductive magnets for the storage of electric energy. In all cases, expensive later modifications were probably prevented by measuring stresses early in the design stage.

The underground portion of Duke Power Company's Bad Creek Pumped Storage Project in northwestern South Carolina consists of a powerhouse cavern (132 m. long, 23 m. wide, 50 m. high), 407 meters of shafts and approximately 3615 meters of tunnel, both lined and unlined, with diameters varying from 4.2 meters to 9.0 meters. A case history is presented, including the early pilot tunnel exploratory work and how this affected design, the design of the project, and the excavation, rock support and tunnel lining work. Problems and experiences encountered during the construction are given. The effects of high horizontal insitu stresses in the granitic gneiss are discussed along with solution taken.

Belt feeders are commonly used to meter the flow of bulk solids from bins and hoppers. If the interface between the hopper outlet and belt feeder is not designed correctly, flow from the bin may be severely compromised, resulting in problems of no-flow, segregation, flooding, etc. By knowing the flow characteristics of the bulk solid being handled and applying proven design techniques, such problems can be avoided. Relevant bulk solids flow characteristics are identified, along with measurement techniques. Design procedures for correcting problems with existing feeders as well as proper design of new feeders are presented, along with case histories of successful application of these procedures.

HISTORY The history of mining in the Outokumpu Co. shows continuous development of small and medium-sized mines, coupled with a permanent improvement in min¬ing methods and mechanization. Tables 1 and 2 provide a brief outline of the major events over the years of operation. Some of the mines have had relatively short lives as in the case of Nivala, Korsnas, Kylmäkoski, the surface pits of the Kotalahti, Vuonos, and Hammaslahti mines, and some very small pits. The sequence in which the mines started opera¬tions is shown in Table 1 and production increases in Table 2. GEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK Most of the ore deposits in Finland (see Fig. 1) are situated in middle Precambrian (1500 to 2300 m.y.) formations corresponding to the Baltic shield. The ores and country rocks are generally firm, with a minimum compressive strength of 60 MPa (8700 psi). The sulfide ores, of importance to the national econ¬omy, can be divided into copper-nickel deposits, asso¬ciated with basic and ultrabasic rocks (1900 m.y.), and the sulfide ores found in well-preserved Svecokarelidic crystalline schists (1800 to 2300 m.y.) which contain varying amounts of copper, zinc, cobalt, nickel, and lead. Over 90% of the sulfide ore mined to date in Fin¬land and existing in the known ore reserves belongs to deposits situated in the main sulfide ore belt. The main sulfide ore belt includes the Outokumpu copper-zinc, the Kotalahti nickel-copper, the Pyhäsalmi copper-zinc, and the Vihanti zinc ore zones. The Outokumpu ore district occurs in a mica schist area about 60 x 100 km, in association with belts of metamorphic Svecokarelidic quartzites, black schists, dolomites, skarn rocks, and serpentinites. The main ore minerals are chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and sphalerite. In addition there are nickel and cobalt minerals such as cubanite and cobalt-pentlandite, which have been of economic importance. In this area, Outokumpu Oy exploits the deposits at Keretti and Vuonos. The latter was discovered as an extension of the Keretti ore field about 6 km to the northeast. The Kotalahti geological formation extends across nearly 400 km. The host rock of these mostly pipelike deposits is generally serpentinite, pyroxenite, or norite. The main ore minerals are pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In this zone, the deposits of Kotalahti, Hitura, and Virtasalmi are at present under exploitation by Outokumpu Oy. The Vihanti geological formation is located in west¬ern Finland and is about 40 km wide and some 200 km long. The rock associations are crystalline schists including dolomites, mica schists, mica gneisses, gray¬wacke, and acidic or basic volcanic rocks, which change generally, in connection with the mineralization, into skarn and cordierite-anthophyllite rocks. The host rocks are dolomite, skarn, graywacke, and quartzitic rock and the principal minerals are sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. The accessory minerals are mainly cubanite, arsenopyrite, molybdenite, and native gold and silver. The two largest ore bodies being exploited at pres¬ent by Outokumpu Oy are the Vihanti mine, which pro¬duces zinc, lead, and copper, and Pyhäsalmi, which con¬tains copper and zinc. Current federal and State coal assessments estimate resources in the ground, resources available for mining, and economically recoverable resources. None of these assessments predict the amount of coal that may be produced from an assessed area in the near future (~20 years). Predictive assessments of coal production would be based on an understanding of the regional coal geology (coal systems), potential demand, and knowledge of the mining history of the region. The output of the predictive assessment would be a supply curve – a probability distribution of the amount of coal expected to be produced from current and new mines during the assessment period. I

Agglomeration developments in the iron ore industry of North America are closely related to shifting patterns in commercially acceptable ore grades and even the definition of iron ores. These relationships have occurred mainly during the last 20 years. Many of these changes are an outgrowth of events which involved the history of the Mesabi Range. Although magnetic taconites had been discovered in the Lake Superior area about 1870, they remained unworked in part for lack of concentration methods and a generally unfavorable economic climate. Some 20 years later the rich Mesabi hematites were found beginning the era of direct shipping ores which continued through World War II. These Lake Superior iron ores included reserves of an estimated three billion tons. Following World War II, decreasing ore grades and rising costs began to force the closing of many underground iron mines. The early 501 s saw the beginning of the decline in direct shipping ores and a spurt in production of natural iron concentrate s. However, the market for unprocessed concentrates began to decline in the early 601 s as agglomerated products and foreign ores began to dominate the U. S. market.

The Shebandowan mine and concentrator, with a capacity of 9072 t/week (10,000 st per week), was opened in 1972 after several years of environmental study and planning. The mine is located in a popular vacation cottage .area about 96 km (60 miles) west of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Undertaken before environmental assessment procedures had become an established requirement, Shebandowan is one of the first Canadian examples of effectively integrating environmental work into overall planning. Although it is an underground mine, many of the environmental considerations are common to open-pit operations, and hence, it provides a case history for the use of all mine planners. Computers can play a part in such studies by simulating the annual production of mine wastes, by on-line polling of environmental sensors and by processing sensor data. Early attention was focused on establishing base-line conditions in a two-year water quality monitoring program. Since production began, water quality monitoring has shown that mining has not caused any significant changes. However, mine drainage disposal arrangements had to be modified in the light of operating experience. There is no townsite associated with the mine, and workers commute from established municipalities. Harmonious relations have been achieved with local cottage residents after their initial fears were dispelled. Plans are ready to begin revegetating the tailings when a sufficient area of dry elevated tailings has been accumulated. Rehabilitation of the land disturbed during development was begun before start-up and was completed during initial operations.

Since 1965 several researchers have independently developed computer models for designing gathering belt and surge bin capacities in underground coal mine belt systems. Table 1 summarizes the models applicable to U.S. mining systems. Most of the models, employ the Monte Carlo simulation technique. Basically, the belt loading at each loading point is randomly produced from probability distributions. In some cases, a combination of deterministic calculations and probability distributions are used to simulate the loading. Once the loading is simulated, it is systematically moved through the belt system in a deterministic fashion based on belt speeds, belt lengths, and storage bin discharge rates. The coal flowing from each loading point is tracked as it moves through the belt system. When the loading from tm different sources combines on a belt or in a surge bin, checks are made to determine if capacities have been exceeded. If capacities have been exceeded the amount of spillage is calculated. At the end of the simulated time period, the cumulative spill- age is used to evaluate the belt and surge bin capacities. Naturally, a considerable amount of spillage indicates the capacities are unacceptable. Acceptable capacities are generally indicated by minimal spillage. Numerous trial simulations are often necessary to find the acceptable capacities.

I was very glad to see an article on alkali-silica reactivity of concrete aggregate in Mining Engineering. It is a topic that should be reexamined every 45 or 50 years. The last paper (that I am aware of) that examined this topic in Mining Engineering was Rexford (1950), who, at the time, was chief of the Petrography Section, South Pacific Division Laboratory, Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles, CA. The paper was presented at the AIME meeting in Los Angeles in October 1948. Professor Leming's discussion generally reflects the current state-of-the-art; but it provides no references for more detailed information. I wrote a paper titled "How to avoid excessive expansion of concrete due to alkali-aggregate reaction," which was included in the Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reactions in Hydroelectric Plants and Dams (Mather, 1995). In it, I emphasized that it was the hydroxide ion (not the alkali ion) that caused the pore fluid in the concrete to dissolve reactive silica, producing alkali-silica gel capable of taking up water, thereby, causing swelling and rupturing of the concrete. Excessive expansion will not occur unless there is a sufficient amount of potentially expansive alkali-silica reaction product and water. However, this will not occur unless there is a sufficient quantity of reactive aggregate and unless there is a mechanism by which the pH of the pore fluid can get well above the normal value of about 12.6. In many cases it is sufficient that the cementitious medium not only contains portland cement but also contains ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) or a pozzolan such as fly ash, silica fume, metakaolin, volcanic glass or calcined shale - any of which may have been included for economic reasons. If, however, the person selecting the ingredients for concrete knows that the aggregate is reactive (with no alternate nonreactive aggregate available) and if the person knows that the only available portland cement has a high alkali content (i.e., more than 0.6% Na2O.; Na2e = % Na20 + 0.658 x % K20), then it becomes irresponsible not to establish what reasonable precaution one should take. Professor Leming suggests using one of the following: 30% Class F fly ash, 50% GGBFS or 7% to 10% silica fume. My view is that one should prepare test specimens with the cement and aggregate to be used and then expose these both with and without at least two dosages of each of the various alternative materials (slag, pozzolan and lithium salts), so that the required dosage. to control the expansion is established. Then, economic considerations can dictate the final selection. I would point out to the author that GGBFS is not a pozzolan and is not an admixture, but, rather, it is a latent hydraulic cement. An admixture is, by definition, a material other than hydraulic cement. I commend him for suggesting that aggregate producers should become more active in knowing about the reactivity of their products and the precautions needed to permit those products to be safely used in concrete.

ABSTRACT Leadership is a critical component to an organization’s safety culture and influences the ways that health and safety is enacted on site. Therefore, it is not surprising that improving leadership will also improve safety. Worker perceptions of management practices are shaped through unique leader-employee interactions over time. However, few details are known about the communicative support (i.e., emotional, informational, and tangible) offered by supervisors and its impact on miners’ perceptions and performance. Using pre and post-interview data with 20 supervisors and 48 workers during six-week interventions, researchers identified positive and negative instances of supervisor support and its implications on worker performance. This paper highlights the common support tactics offered by supervisors and desired by workers to help practitioners identify ways to improve their safety culture and subsequently, the proactivity and compliance of their workforce. INTRODUCTION Supervisory leadership is a critical component to the effective implementation of an organization’s health and safety management system (HSMS). Specifically, supervisors serve as representatives of an organization and their actions are indicative of the organization’s safety culture (Eisenberger et al. 1986). Senior management has been shown to serve as a frame of reference for guiding safe behaviors in the workplace (Mearns et al. 1998) and, more recently, research has related supervisory enforcement to workers’ safety compliance (Petitta et al., 2017). Therefore, it is not surprising that by improving leadership, perceptions of management and subsequent safety outcomes are likely to improve as well (Zohar, 2002). Perceptions of management are shaped through unique leader-employee interactions over a period of time (Hofmann and Morgeson, 2004, 1999). How these unique interactions impact worker performance, however, remains unexamined. As a result, understanding how supervisor-employee relationships operate in high-risk environments is unclear (Mirza and Isha, 2017; Denis et al., 2010). A starting point to better recognize the idiosyncrasies of these relationships is by way of examining the communicative support offered by front-line management and received by industry workers. To this end, this paper uses pre- and post-interview data to study the communicative aspects of supervisor-employee interactions at mine sites. The analysis uses a social support framework to identify positive and negative instances of supportive communication. From interview data with 20 managers and 48 mineworkers, data emerged that shows how supervisors’ unique types of support contribute to workers’ perceptions, motivation, and follow-through of safe work behavior.

Gold and silver cyanide complexes are presently desorbed from activated carbon by means of hot caustic elutions. These solutions may or may not contain additional sodium cyanide. There are several parameters which affect the rate of stripping. Some of these include pH, ionic strength, and tempera­ture. Stripping is conducted in recirculating (ZADRA) or once through (AARL) circuits. This paper describes the development of a new chemical eluant which increases the rate of stripping of both gold and silver cyanide complexes from carbon. Two case history applications are described.

The transportation networks of the United States contributed immensely to the growth and prosperity of our nation. My objective is to make each and everyone here aware of the need for communication between geologists, mining engineers, purchasing agents and transportation managers. Only through a cooperative effort is it possible to reap the benefits of transportation in the industrial minerals field. Transportation is often thought of in terms of trucks, rail cars, barges, covered wagons or whatever. If this is your only exposure to the transportation industry then you probably spent most of your life in a cave.
