INTRODUCTION A mine's power system represents the driving force behind all of the extraction and auxiliary operations, because the production and transportation of mined material and the operation of equipment, such as fans and pumps, are all dependent upon a power source. Once, compressed air was the primary power source in mining; today, however, electrical power dominates. This chapter reviews the basic theories of com- pressed-air and electrical power and provides several examples of applications in mine power systems. COMPRESSED-AIR POWER General Compressed air has been, and should continue to be, an important source of power in mining operations. It has been used as a means of blasting coal in conventional mining and is widely used to operate stopers, mucking machines, and other air tools in both coal and hard-rock mines. Such applications demonstrate the suitability of compressed air for applications requiring linear motion, but it is also utilized for its reliability and safety. A compressed-air system is composed of a compressor, a receiver, a distribution network, and the air-operated machines. A compressor takes in air at normal atmospheric pressure (free air) and compresses it to a higher discharge pressure. The discharge pressure must be high enough to overcome the friction in the distribution system of pipes and hoses and deliver the compressed air to the machines at the pressure recommended by the manufacturer. The most common type of compressor used in mines is the reciprocating compressor in which the air is compressed by a piston in a cylinder. An air receiver is a container or storage tank that is located in the distribution system between the compressor and the machines. It stores compressed air, when the full capacity of the compressor is not being used, and gives a more steady flow of air to the machines. The distribution network consists of pipes, Oalves, elbows, tees, and hoses that transmit the compressed air from the receiver to the machines in the mine. It is essential that the distribution system be designed with the proper sizes and lengths of pipe, hose, and other components to keep pressure losses well within allowable limits. The air-operated machines consist primarily of drifters, stopers, pluggers (sinkers), slushers, and several other pieces of equipment. Compressor Operation Every compressor is made up of one or more basic elements; a single element, or a group of elements in parallel, comprises a single-stage compressor. Many compression problems involve conditions beyond the practical capability of a single compression stage. Too great a compression ratio (absolute discharge pressure divided by absolute intake pressure) may cause excessive discharge temperatures or other design problems. It, therefore, may become necessary to combine elements or groups of elements in series to form a multi- stage unit, in which there will be two or more steps of compression. The number of stages commonly used in reciprocating compressors is as follows: Pressure Number of stages 0- 150 pig 1 80- 500 psig 2 500-2500 psig 3 2500-5000 psig 4 When pressure is referred to as pounds per square inch gage (psig), it means the pressure (in pounds per square inch) above barometric pressure as measured by a gage. The sum of barometric pressure and gage pressure is the absolute pressure (in pounds per square inch). The gas is frequently cooled between stages to reduce the temperature and volume entering the subsequent stages, thereby reducing the work required for compression. The basic reciprocating compression element is a single cylinder compressing on only one side of the piston (single-acting). A unit compressing on both sides of the piston (double-acting) consists of two basic single-acting elements operating in parallel in one casing. The reciprocating compressor uses automatic spring-loaded valves that open only when the proper differential pressure exists across the valves. Intake valves open when the pressure in the cylinder is slightly below the intake pressure. Discharge valves open when the pressure in the cylinder is slightly above the discharge pressure. The extension of the commuter railway system (S-Bahn) in Leipzig, Germany willrequire the construction of an underground line crossing the downtown area of thecity to tie the Bavarian Station in the South to the Main-Station in the North. The City-Tunnel-Leipzig is currently one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe. This system extension will have a length of approximately five kilometers. 3.9 kilometers of that length are currently being constructed using either cut & cover construction or tunnelingmethods. The design and construction of this project currently is and will continue facing very significant challenging urban and demanding geotechnical conditions.

INTRODUCTION The Metropolitan Expressway Central Circular Route with a total length of approximately 47 km is located outside the Inner Circular Route of Tokyo (at a radius of approximately 8 km from the city center). Sections with a length of approximately26 km, slightly less than 60% of the total length, on the east and north sides are in ser-vice. Completing the Central Circular Route (Figure 1) is expected to enable through traffic concentrated at the city center to get around, and to form a well balanced trans-port network, which will alleviate traffic congestion considerably. The Central Circular Shinjuku Route, a section with a length of approximately 11 km on the west side, is now being constructed at a fast pace. The route is being built mainly by the shield tunneling method to carry out work smoothly under a trunk highway carrying heavy traffic and to reduce adverse effects of tunneling work on residents in the neighborhood. Shield tunnels have recently been becoming longer and deeper, and no secondary linings have been used in an increasing number of cases because of the over-crowding of cities or the reduction of budgets for public works. Economical, durable and high-quality segments have been required for linings of shield tunnels. Segments are made of concrete, steel, cast iron or combination thereof. Concrete segments are generally used in shield tunnels of medium to large diameter. Concrete segments are highly durable and resistant to compression, so they are highly resistant to earth pres-sure, water pressure and jack thrust. They are, however, heavy and have low tensile strength, so they are brittle and their corners are likely to spall. Concrete segments should therefore be handled carefully.[1] The authors have developed a steel fiber reinforced highly flowable concrete segment (referred as SFRC segment) that overcomes the weaknesses of concrete segments[2] to construct economical, durable and high-quality linings. SFRC segments have been applied to outbound sections SJ51 through SJ53 of the Central Circular Shinjuku Route. Unlike conventional concrete segments (referred as conventional RC segments), SFRC segments are made of steel fiber reinforced self-compacting highly flowable concrete. SFRC segments require less reinforcing bars than conventional RC segments because steel fibers are expected to work as reinforcements. Newmont mine geologists in Nevada are most proficient when applying technical expertise with multi-departmental teams in three main settings. The first is value creation through near-mine discovery, development and reserve conversion. Since 1986, geologists have created substantial net asset value in developing more than 1.35 kt (43 million oz) into quality Nevada surface and underground gold reserves. The second setting is value realization by supporting mine operations with ore control, selective mining, reconciliation investigations and strategic planning. The investment of technical research on reconciliation investigations led to new concepts and practices that highlighted opportunities for large revenue and reserve gains. In 2002, more than $65 million in projected revenue was added to the Gold Quarry south layback. Kriged mine polygon construction and controlled blast heave at the Lone Tree Mine provided millions of dollars in mining efficiencies. High-quality geologic advice in selective mining at the Twin Creeks Mine helped obtain $4.3 million revenue gains throughout 2002-2003.

The Wharf Resources mine, located in the Bald Mountain Mining District approximately 6.4 km (4miles) west of Lead, South Dakota, has operated a surface gold and silver mine and heap leaching processing facility since 1983. Wharf Resources intends to mine and process gold and silver ore from the Wharf Expansion area which is located on the eastern flank of the currently permitted Foley Ridge Mine. The Trojan Pit for the Wharf Expansion area was initially designed with an overall highwall slope angle of 45o. During mine permit presubmission meetings with personnel from the SD Department of Environment and Natural Resources (SD DENR), the question arose as to whether a detailed slope stability analysis of the proposed Trojan Pit highwalls was completed to justify the 45o slope. Wharf’s response was that the highwall design was based, in part, upon studies completed in1987 on the Annie Creek and Foley Ridge Mines; and, in part, upon subsequent slope stability analyses conducted by Wharf mine personnel through 1996. It was suggested by the SD DENR that the stability study be updated to reflect structural geological conditions in the Wharf Expansion area.

A good quality assurance program at a coal mine or power plant is accurate, timely and consistent. The quality analysis is accurate due to a complete sampling of the coal stream loaded into the unit train. The sample analysis is accurate because standardized testing procedures are applied. Once an analysis is completed, the results must be communicated to the electric utility in a timely manner. The electric utility needs the results to better manage the coal inventory at its power plants. A quality assurance program can also help a mine deliver a consistent product to a utility's power plants. The importance of accuracy, timeliness and consistency are based on major changes that are taking place in the electric utility industry.

Discrete (digital) signal processing techniques are proving to be very valuable tools for miners using the block cave method. Waveform analysis of different measured signals associated with active mining provides valuable information on production dynamics and safe operation of the mine. For example, correlation of the three-dimensional surface displacement velocity waveform and the production output waveform reveals a remarkably predictable time-varying physical process. In this paper, the authors discuss the signal processing techniques used to study these relationships, as well as the related implications for mining.

A common problem recently encountered with the increase in the rate of input feed at Enrichment Plant 2 of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex is the loss of value to the tails, translating to lower recoveries. The feasibility of the direct transfer of part of the high-grade concentrate from rougher stages to an appropriate position along the circuit was studied, and two positions were proposed for direct transfer of the concentrate. One position was the feed flow into cleaner cells, and the other was the feed flow into the recleaner cell. The results indicated that transferring the concentrate from the first unit of the rougher stage to the feed flow into the cleaner cells was feasible, with no limitations, while the second position required the installation of a set of hydrocyclones. It was found that the transfer of concentrate to the proposed positions not only addressed the problem of limited cell capacity, resulting in debottlenecking of the circuit, but also improved metallurgical separation efficiency up to 1.4%.

Underwater exploration for marine resources using camera-equipped devices (OFOS, ROV, AUV) is receiving growing attention. This development is creating a continuously growing pile of digital underwater images leading to a serious bottleneck in the analysis. However, any harvesting strategy must be coupled to an efficient and effective assessment of the biodiversity in the area of interest and in nearby control areas. To integrate manual image and computational image interpretation on different levels (i.e. regarding geology and environmental sciences and taxonomy), sophisticated software support is required, which is not yet offered explicitly, neither by commercial software companies nor by academic or other publicly founded institutions. Here, we present the first version of a new digital asset management system that offers functionalities for easy data management, sharing, manual annotation and integration of computational modules for image enhancement/pre-processing and interpretation. The functionality is demonstrated with data from the CCZ provided by the BGR Hannover.

Characterization of ore and waste-rock material using automated quantitative micro-mineralogical techniques (e.g., QEMSCAN® and MLA) has the potential to complement traditional acid-base accounting and humidity cell techniques when predicting acid generation and metal release. These characterization techniques, which most commonly are used for metallurgical, mineral-processing, and geometallurgical applications, can be broadly applied throughout the mine-life cycle to include numerous environmental applications. Critical insights into mineral liberation, mineral associations, particle size, particle texture, and mineralogical residence phase(s) of environmentally important elements can be used to anticipate potential environmental challenges. Resources spent on initial characterization result in lower uncertainties of potential environmental impacts and possible cost savings associated with remediation and closure. Examples illustrate mineralogical and textural characterization of fluvial tailings material from the upper Arkansas River in Colorado.

History The Cortez Mining District has a long history of mining activity dating back to 1862. More recently, Cortez Gold Mines had operated a cyanide leach, counter current decantation (CCD) recovery gold mill from January 1969 to February 1976. This type of plant has been standard in the US for treating higher grade, finely disseminated gold in Carlin type ores. The mill was initially operated from 1969 to 1973 at 1.5 kt/d (1650 stpd) on oxidized ore from the Cortez ore body. In 1973, the mill was operated at 2 kt/d (2200 stpd) on softer, less oxidized, high clay ore from Gold Acres, located 13 km (8 miles) west of Cortez, NV. In February 1976, the oxidized portion of the ore body at Gold Acres was depleted and the mill ceased operations. Successful heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ores was practiced at both Cortez and Gold Acres to supplement the milling operations. Valuable experience was gained in the operation of these two heap leaching programs (Duncan and Smolik, 1977). The ore heaps at Gold Acres and Cortez were releached with a limited crew from 1976 to 1979. The surge in the price of gold in late 1979 sparked an interest to incorporate new techniques into treating lower grade and less oxidized carbonaceous ores at Cortez. In early 1980, heap leaching was started on low grade oxidized dump material left from the earlier Cortez mining operation. By June of 1980, testwork was completed on the London Extension Dump, a low grade, mildly carbonaceous dump at Gold Acres. It was decided to convert the mill at Cortez from the conventional cyanide leach CCD recovery plant to a carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery system. In May 1983, ore processing from the Horse Canyon deposit began. The Horse Canyon ore body contains both oxide and carbonaceous ores and is located 22.5 km (14 miles) from the Cortez mill. The Cortez CIL circuit was expanded to handle a blend of oxide and carbonaceous ores from Horse Canyon. Ore selection In the last quarter 1979, gold prices were increasing to a point where restarting the Cortez mill, idled since 1976, appeared imminent. Several previously explored geologic reserves at various stages of development were available as possible sources of feed for the mill. Initial metallurgical testing of dumps and tailings from earlier operations was completed, and previously uneconomic deposits were explored. It was decided to pursue sources of ore with the least lead time to production and those with the least capital cost requirements. A master plan was developed to bring the four profitable ore resources into production. When the Trelleborg Divisions of Boliden Allis and Mineral Processing Systems (MPSI) merged, a unique opportunity occurred for two independent mill fabricators to compare design pro¬cedures and the research upon which they were based. Several semiautogenuous (SAG) mill analyses are compared using Boliden Allis and MPSI methods. The differences and similarities are then used in a correlation of critical stress definitions and the acceptable design and inspection criteria. Given the opportunity to compare the total philosophies and methods of several companies involved in the design and fabrication of grinding mills, it was important to first develop the comparison method and ground rules. One option was to compare analytical methods by details such as numerical techniques and accuracies. However, this option was discarded in favor of a more general approach. The question that was finally posed was in two parts. Given an identical mill requirement: • What would be the difference in the analytical design result, and to what aspect of the analytical process could this difference be attributed? • What would be the difference in approaches to obtaining the final hardware in subcontracting, both in specifying and Quality Assurance surveillance? By using this comparative approach, questions of relative conservativeness and reliability would automatically be answered.

Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is engaged in developing, extracting, processing and refining palladium, platinum and associated metals (PGM)from the J-M Reef. This geological formation is located in Stillwater, Sweet Grass and Park counties in southern Montana. Associated byproduct metals include rhodium, gold, silver, nickel and copper. SMC’s current mining operations are near Nye, MT. The company is currently developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine, the East Boulder project, about 21 km (13 miles) west of the Nye operations. A 5,650-m (18,550-ft) tunnel is required to gain access to the ore-bearing horizon (J-M Reef).

Mr. Garrett brings up several interesting points with respect to the proposed API specification for "nontreated bentonite." However, although not explicitly stated, these specifications are being written based strictly on bentonites from the Wyoming/South Dakota area. Other sodium bentonites may be suitable for use as drill mud but will be unacceptable since the specifications are designed for Wyoming bentonites. Regardless of the API's intent that its specifications are intended only as guidelines, they are generally adhered to on an international basis and, for practical purposes, might as well be chiseled in stone. Estes (1986) notes that the quality of bentonite available from Wyoming producers has steadily declined since the early 1960's. The plastic viscosity: yield point (PV:YP) ratio was included in the current API 13A specification primarily to prevent excessive polymer treatment of lower quality bentonites to make drill mud. However, with development of polymers designed to control YP, this specification cannot ensure that only high-quality bentonites are used for drill mud. Nor will the new specifications for untreated bentonites. Other sodium bentonites are available. Bentonite produced in southeast Oregon demonstrates superior performance characteristics without addition of polymer or other chemicals. However, the exceptionally high purity of these deposits leads to a relatively high YP:PV ratio since the naturally high YP probably results from the higher purity and smaller particle size of this bentonite (Rath, 1986 and personal communication). These bentonites typically have a smectite component exceeding 90% (Rath, 1985), compared with 70% to 75% smectite for typical Wyoming bentonites, as determined by X¬ray diffraction and tests for colloid content. As evident from the accompanying table, the untreated Oregon bentonite has excellent rheological properties, though different from Wyoming bentonites due to the high purity. Additionally, this bentonite reacts well with polymers typically used in the oil industry, making it eminently suitable for use in a low-solids mud system. The extremely low grit content, less that 0.5% on a 75 mm (200-mesh) wet sieve, greatly exceeds the standards set for Wyoming bentonite. Optimum rheological properties are obtained at a higher moisture content than Wyoming bentonites. At 10% moisture, API 13A maximum, the clay is overdried, again reflecting the high smectite content. Geochemical conditions within a leaching operation are heterogeneous. This variability arises mainly from hydrological controls imparted by physical characteristics of the ore and by heterogeneous metallurgical properties at the rock-fragment and industrial heap scale. The resulting chemical conditions are responsible for stratified mineral recovery, non-uniform extraction and prolonged leach cycles. This paper presents field data from a sulfide-leaching operation which clearly demonstrate the impact of chemical heterogeneity on metal recovery and the potential use of modern measuring techniques to facilitate operational monitoring and decision making for optimization of leaching operations.

Proper employment of numerical stress analysis design tools is based on the demonstrated ability of a model to capture key elements of the geologic site model and accurately simulate how these elements interact with a mine design. While these tools have progressed markedly, they are, at heart, a gross simplification of the abundant complexity of a natural setting and its response to mining. A generic deep longwall site model was developed that includes aspects of the geology of deep coal mines in the Wasatch Plateau and Book Cliffs coal fields of Utah. The site model contains a set of common features and observations of how these features typically respond to mining. This site model was the basis for evaluating use of empirical, boundary element and volume element stress analysis tools to analyze the distribution of stress around a deep longwall panel. More specifically, this evaluation examined shifting of stress to panel abutments and gob, distribution of stress in the abutment, and deformation and failure of bridging strata. Measurements of abutment stress changes at two sites in the Wasatch Plateau region were used to illustrate model calibration. Overall, these comparisons highlight the considerable differences between methods. Volume element tools can incorporate considerable detail and have fewer underlying assumptions, but this detail carries a considerable computational cost. Boundary element tools are much more efficient. But this efficiency also comes at a cost of added assumptions. These assumptions were challenged by the presence of a strong sandstone unit in the overburden, leading to boundary element results that depart significantly from volume element results. Empirical rules are the simplest, but are even more burdened by assumptions, many of which are implicit in underlying cases. Insight into the nature and impacts of underlying assumptions in each method is essential to proper use of results in mine design. When Bridger Coal Company transformed their operations from surface mining to an underground longwall operation their plans included not only the addition of new mining equipment but also surface fans for a blowing (supply) air ventilation system. The original system concept included a propane gas fired air heater to preheat the intake air during cold weather and a dual parallel fan and duct system. One fan operated to ventilate the mine while the other fan was for stand-by emergency operation. Equipment proposals were submitted in March, 2005 based on the dual parallel fan system. Discussions conducted during the equipment selection process revealed that several alternative system design concepts were available. The alternative concepts included innovation features that not only saved space and cost but also reduced operating expense as well. Many of the features were incorporated into the final design of the system. A comparison of the original system concept and final installation design are presented in the paper in addition to details of the features and the derived benefits.

bauma 2004 will feature a couple of firsts for one of the world’s largest construction and building materials machinery exhibitions. The event is scheduled for March 29 through April 4 of next year at the New Munich Trade Fair Center in Munich, Germany. For the first time, bauma will feature an exhibition area dedicated to mining equipment and technology. Also for the first time, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) will be a partner region of bauma.

Disc cutters have determined excavation rates of rock tunneling projects for more than 50 years. First developed in 1956 by James S. Robbins, disc cutters (then 279 mm or 11 in. in diameter) were used to bore limestone of 190 MPa (27,500 psi) unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and were loaded with 7.12 t (15,700 lbs) each. Modern cutters have reached up to 508 mm (20 in.) in diameter and are typically loaded with up to 31.7 t (70,000 lb) to economically bore through the hardest of rock up to plus 400 MPa (60,000 psi) UCS. New developments, such as larger cutter diameters, are geared to increasing the bearing capacity and wear life of the cutting structure. This, in turn, increases cutter life, cutter load and cutter penetration. Disc cutters have also been re-designed on a small scale for use in hard-rock utility installations. Additional variables also affect the three factors, including cutter spacing on the cutterhead, cutterhead diameter and cutter materials.

Successful mineral exploration is the lifeblood of the mining industry. Contrary to what the environmental lobby would have the world believe, the industry is replacing the metals it is extracting. The reserve base has not changed significantly in 20 years (Fig. 1.) Mineral exploration is a research activity. First there is the idea, the vision or the intuitive thought. The experiments follow. These involve repeated phases of data gathering, data interpretation and concept testing through drilling. For many companies, exploration is the main investment in scientific research. Each mineral exploration experiment may involve years of costly work. Despite the improving tools of science and technology, the investment remains high-risk. Only the promise of high rewards, or desire to survive as a mining company, will stimulate the necessary commitment and level of investment. Confidence that an economic return can be achieved, confidence in the science and technology being applied and confidence in the people involved are the foundations upon which successful mineral exploration is built (Woodall, 1984). The challenges facing the explorationist in the 1990s fall into two categories: - the challenge to make the activity economic; and - the challenge to make the activity socially and, therefore, politically acceptable.
