The influence of local geology and rock mass characteristics on deformations during a rockburst caused by a controlled blast was studied. This was done by means of visual examination, mapping and photography both before and after the blast. We found that the ejected material was bounded mostly by fractures associated with the bow-wave fracturing and bedding surfaces and that existed prior to the blast. Most of the damage was caused by shake-out. This information is important input for the design of rockburst resistant support systems under conditions of moderate stress.

The purpose of the paper is to give an introduction to the concept of fatigue and its causes in the mining industry. By knowing the fundamental role it plays, together with its dynamics, can positively contribute to a mine?s safety management system. The difference between physical and psychological fatigue will be addressed with a possible range of causes that could trigger fatigue. There are two main sources of fatigue: firstly, work-related fatigue which is associated with activities at the workplace; and secondly non-work-related fatigue. The shared responsibility between the employer and employee is also discussed as it involves factors that occur both in and outside the workplace. Employers have the responsibility to manage fatigue through using a risk management approach. Employees have the responsibility to ensure they get enough sleep, take sufficient and regular nutrition, are healthy and physically fit and come to work fresh and alert. The impact of the implementation of a fatigue management plan and procedures has the potential to eliminate employee fatigue or its causes, reduce the likelihood of fatigue occurring in the workplace, and counteract the effects of fatigue when it occurs. Factors considered when implementing a fatigue management system include: extended hours of work, shift work, time of day and work design. Fatigue is one of the major role players (either causal or contributory) when it comes to causes of fatalities in the mining industry. Our main challenge in identifying whether fatigue played a role is the fact that it cannot be tested in post-mortems like drug or alcohol abuse. It is an aspect worth understanding and getting an organization sensitive to managing it properly to benefit both organizational as well as employee needs. Over the last few years Lonmin Platinum and Sandvik have embarked on a unique partnership of collaboration through a systematic approach to developing equipment to mechanize and automate narrow reef platinum mining. After the initial design and manufacture of the equipment the key aspect is the integrating equipment, people and method into a mining system. Another key a spec of mechanization is the optimization of equipment utilization and this philosophy has ensured continual evolvement of mining methods. This paper describes the trials and development that have resulted in the mining method described as Lonmin mechanized breast.

In the latter part of the 1980s Outokumpu Chrome in Tornio, Finland, was in a situation when its twenty-year-old ferrochrome plant was becoming too inefficient to sustain economically sound production. The company made extensive studies on the then available processing methods to find out the best possible processing route. As a result, the whole plant was practically rebuilt and expanded. When equipment was proven in practical operation, an application for FeMn production was developed. Now as the Tornio FeCr-plant is considering expansion, the same type of exercise is to be performed with today?s challenges, which will be discussed in the paper. These challenges include increasing costs or decreasing quality of raw materials, increasing energy costs, stricter environmental regulations and demand for better working conditions. The possibilities of resolving to these challenges will be discussed in the paper. The future and continuing development with FeCr includes the better utilization of process dusts and a lower consumption of energy. By adapting the latest automation tools to better control the process, even higher efficiencies can be achieved with present technology. New processes are considered for development in the future and some possible technologies will be described.

The hard rock gold and platinum mines in South Africa have seen little development in the technology of mining. Holes are still drilled in the rock?though the latest water hydraulic rockdrills will complete that task in two minutes compared with the eight hours for hand drilling. Charging up is with far safer explosives and with available initiation systems it is no longer necessary to run up the face lighting each fuse. Movement of rock in the stope is predominately by means of scraper buckets and scraper winches?these were first introduced in the 1920s. Support is still mainly rock, either in situ pillars or backfill, or alternatively wood. Just as the mining process has changed very little it is hardly surprising that the productivity of mining is also relatively unchanged. Major efforts have been made to mechanize the mining process. However, most of the narrow reef mines where ?trackless mechanized mining? was introduced in the early1980s have reverted to conventional mining. In the wider reefs mechanized mining is the option of choice, unfortunately most of the gold and platinum mines have very narrow reefs that are not suitable to ?off the shelf? equipment. The move to introduce room-and-pillar mining into the narrow UG2 reefs is at the expense of mining more waste with the reef, fortunately it appears that appropriate waste and reef separation processes are available. Room-and-pillar mining followed by long hole drilling and blasting of a narrow slot of reef out of the pillars currently appears to offer the best of both worlds?maximum reef recovery with minimum waste dilution.

This investigation compares the results from an experimental and numerical study of air flow in a scaled-down underground coal mine model. This was done in order to determine if numerical analysis can be relied upon when searching for ventilation solutions to control high concentration of coal dust and methane gas in underground coal mines. Steady state analyses were used to identify flow patterns and recirculation regions within the mining section while transient state analyses were used to determine the time taken to extract the initial air from the model. The agreement between the experimental and numerical results indicates that numerical modelling is useful in this regard. The study went further to devise a method of determining the optimum position of the jet fan that is responsible for mine-gas dilution at different stages of mining.

Deep-hole blasting operations in opencast mines are always associated with some annoyance to the surrounding areas in terms of ground vibration, noise, flyrock, etc. These become more severe when underground mines run parallel to them. Blasting in opencast mines may pose danger to the underground mines in terms of roof/side failures, damage of water dams, isolation/ventilation stoppings and other underground installations. The paper discusses a case study in India on the impact of deep-hole blasting in Ramagundam Opencast Project ? III on the stability of various water dams of GDK-6B Incline coal mine operating in close proximity. The stability of underground water dams of GDK-6B Incline mine was endangered due to deep-hole blasting at OCP-III. There were 15 water dams in seam 3 and 16 dams in seam 4 of the underground mine. The physical strength tests using a Schmidt Hammer instrument were carried out in all the 15 water dams of No. 3 seam and 16 water dams of No. 4 seam. The test revealed that there is a decrease in compressive strength values of three dams of seam 3, namely 6A, 6B and 7. Theose three dams were also directly connected to the water source. Water seepage was also observed from the surfaces of the three dams. However, they were found to be stable in accordance with their design parameters and damage point of view while considering a threshold value of ground vibration as 25 mm/s. It was found that the value of tensile stress generated by a vibration of 25 mm/s was much lower (i.e. 0.171N/mm2) than the tensile strength of the two weakest concrete dams (1.85 N/mm2). Ten experimental blasts were conducted at different working benches of the opencast mine and the ground vibration data were recorded in roof and pillars near various underground water dams. The maximum value of vibration data recorded was 5.9 mm/s in roof near dam no. 1 in seam 3 with the dominant peak frequency of 22 Hz. No adverse effect on either of the dams was observed after that blast. During the period of study, no deterioration/adverse impact was found in any dam of the mine. Based on the results of the study and the analyses of the data, optimized blast design parameters and explosives weight per delay were suggested for the opencast mine to maintain the safety of the underground water dams. Data used for the analysis are actual plant data collected over the past two years of operation. Facts obtained from the study will be helpful for smelter management to control these components in the flash smelting furnace feed and slag, to levels which will enable better control of copper in slag, and smoother operation of the KCM slag-cleaning furnace.

What is not measured cannot be managed. This is true of most things, including a furnace lining. This paper describes a Lining Management System used for this purpose. It provides the operations staff with a management tool to predict long term lining life and acts as a process optimisation tool. It alarms and records upset furnace conditions. Outputs from the system are described as presented through a specially developed software package and interface. It includes vertical and horizontal furnace sections showing estimated isotherms through the lining as well as the furnace bath. It also shows calculated heat flux values, estimated lining wear and the freeze layer profile. A novel three-dimensional display is described which provides the operator with a big picture view of the furnace crucible profile under real time operating conditions. The powerful trending facility for analysing both measured and calculated values is discussed. The required instrumentation hardware as well as the installation thereof is described, with special reference to an electrically insulating thermocouple socket design. Finally feedback is provided on the first year?s performance of the system installed on an open ferrochrome furnace at Assmang Chrome, Machadodorp, South Africa.

Electrochemical measurements are presented on electro-deoxidation of silica in molten calcium chloride at 900°C, with porous silica pellets as starting material. Measurements during pre-electrolysis (to remove water from the melt) showed electrochemical noise, which is consistent with the evolution of hydrogen. Throughout, the dominant anodic reaction appears to be CO2formation, based on the observed potential at the anode, and measured anode wear. Because of the presence of dissolved CaO in the melt, some of the CO2 candissolve in the melt; the resulting calcium carbonate formation was confirmed by electrolyte analysis after reduction runs. Reduction of dissolved CO2 at the cathode is likely to contribute to the background current during the reduction process. For the electrode and cell configuration used here, most of the over potential arises from polarization of the anode, and ohmic potential drop in the electrolyte.

It is important to know the breakage mechanism in materials since this knowledge influences the results of subsequent grinding operations. There are two distinct failure mechanisms in breakage: one is tensile micro crack generation at low stresses, which leads to macroscopic failure by disintegration, and the other is formation of shear zones under heavier dynamic impact forces, which generates more fines as seen in crush zones in blasting. Tensile fracturing simply breaks the material into fragments. It is seen as the disintegration of the specimen into two or more separate fragments. This happens under the absence of lateral stresses and the material is free to expand. On the other hand, compressive-shear breakage produces finer fragments due to shear stresses. The first mechanism is observed in laboratory tensile and bending strength tests and the second mechanism is observed both in laboratory brittleness tests and in situ blasting operations under dynamic impact forces. The friability of rocks and ores can be determined by a brittleness test. A test apparatus to determine the friability value has been designed to suit limestone strength characteristics used in cement production. The friability and stored strain energy values of barite, marble, limestone and bauxite have been determined and compared with the corresponding Bond work index (Wi) and grindability index (G) of these materials. The physico-mechanical properties of the tested materials have also been determined to investigate their effect on friability and grinding. The relationships obtained between the indices were in surprisingly good agreement, with high correlations (0.99 and 0.97). The Bond work index and grindability index can therefore be estimated from the friability value, which can be determined more rapidly than the Bond test. But for certain rock types such as andesites the relationships does not hold. Key words: comminution, tensile stress, shear forces, brittleness test, strain energy.

However, the underlying principles are the same for either case. The rationalization of these variables is a major concern for furnace operators and designers. This paper presents the results of a two year study of high speed real time data from a number of electric furnaces around the world, covering a very wide range of design philosophy and product manufacture, to provide a better mathematical insight into rationalizing the furnace operation.

Tests were conducted on samples of rutile, titaniferous slag and ilmenite; each sample was mixed with coke and chlorinated in a bubbling fluidized bed at 1000°C. Profiles of the rates of chlorination of species were constructed from chemical compositions of the bed residues at different durations. From the start FeO and MnO are chlorinated quickly and all but entirely in a fraction of the time it takes to chlorinate all the TiO2. When the level of FeO is significant, as in slag and ilmenite, FeO is chlorinated faster than TiO2is. In these oxides, there is an inverse relationship between the rates of chlorination of FeO and TiO2during this first stage; the relationship, moreover, correlates linearly with the initial percentage of FeO in the oxide. We identify three stages in the chlorination process; a first, in slag and ilmenite, when FeO is being chlorinated; a second, when TiO2is most readily chlorinated; and a third, towards the end, when the levels of TiO2are reduced to those of other species. Ball mills are usually the largest consumers of energy within a mineral concentrator. Comminution is responsible for 50% of the total mineral processing cost. In today?s global markets, expanding mining groups are trying to optimize mill performances. Since comminution is concerned with liberating valuable minerals for recovery in the separation process, it is crucial to run the mills at the best operating conditions which lead to good liberation at competitive throughputs with minimum costs (energy and wear). The high availability of the equipment is also essential to maximize production and profit. To reach this key objective, continuous and reliable information about the mill operation is vital. An innovative tool which can deliver information about in-mill dynamics has been developed by Magotteaux. It can provide online and accurate measurements of the degree of grinding ball fill and pulp position for timely decision making and actions. This tool could be used on its own or linked to an automatic grinding ball loading system named Magoload. Therefore, ball load could be kept constant by using direct measurement. This article describes the Sensomag and presents some of the major improvements that can be achieved with it. Some other promising avenues are still to be explored. The objective of this work is to quantify the effect of the rock mass surrounding a stope or a tunnel on the seismic signal so that the rockburst damage on the excavation can be derived. It has been shown that the transfer function of rock mass surrounding an excavation can be modelled using a damped oscillator. The method of estimating the transfer function is extended in this paper. The parameters of a damped oscillator are estimated using inversion techniques and the transfer function is modelled as a time-varying system. The technique is tested on data acquired at three different sites in two deep gold mines. Employment of a modal model of the transfer function was suitable in two cases. Application of this technique is essential to track the time variation of the natural frequency during ground motion caused by a seismic event.

The effect of grinding media performance on milling and operational behaviour was demonstrated under different selected conditions of calcium carbonate slurry milling. A variety of grinding media materials and bead sizes, along with two different stirrer tip speeds, were used in the grinding process to generate a particle size reduction of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3). To determine the optimum milling parameters the collected test data were used to calculate and evaluate specific energy as well as stress intensity under different milling conditions. Noise in general and drilling noise in particular have received increasing attention within the South African mining industry during the last 10?15 years. The Mine Health and Safety Committee1, during their 2003 annual summit, established two significant milestones to be met by December 2008 and December 2013. The 2008 milestone target is that of no more than ten per cent deterioration in hearing among occupationally exposed individuals, whereas the 2013 milestone target is that of less than 110 dB sound pressure levels at any place in the workplace. While these targets relate to general noise within the mining industry, it is widely believed that the most significant source of noise contributing to noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) among the underground workforce, is that of pneumatic rock drills. Data pertaining to the noise emission level of any machine is generally reported as either a sound pressure level or a sound power level of a single machine measured under free field conditions as defined in Appendix 3 of SABS-ISO 37442. However, rock drills are seldom used in isolation and underground conditions cannot be considered as free field. A methodology for the selection of rock drills on the basis of total operating cost has been developed. However, this paper focuses on the noise elements of the generic methodology and provides a model for the prediction of the composite sound pressure level and the equivalent noise exposure levels of groups of individuals from machines, used singly and in combination in an underground environment based on the sound pressure level determined according to SABS-ISO 3744 under free field conditions. The methodology includes provision for the consideration of the effect of hearing protection devices and the use of multiple machines in combination and provides an indication of the potential costs of hearing compensation.

Analyses of accident records show that a better understanding of very basic strata control principles and practices, by production personnel, will improve worker safety. Workers, lack of knowledge, with respect to aspects of strata control, increases their exposure to such strata control risks. The primary objective of the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) project 02 02 07 was to develop tools for the transfer of strata control knowledge. Four such tools were developed, three of which focused on illiterate underground mine team members who are not yet able to take advantage of the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) learning process (see project outcomes 2, 3 and 4 below). The tools were designed to equip these workers with sufficient knowledge and ability to work safely underground until such time as they can take advantage of the MQA system. Project outcomes: 1 A four-minute video using animation to illustrate the causes and prevention of falls of roof in South African collieries. 2 Software to demonstrate the capability of reconstructing, interactively, accident scenes and actions that have taken place underground in stopes. 3 A strata control bridging course for illiterate mine team workers. 4 Small-scale wooden models that will be used to design life-size mock-up facilities to assist with the above mentioned bridging course. 5 Workshops and presentations to demonstrate the outcomes 1to 4 above.

"The oxidative leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions has been evaluated using electro-analytical techniques. The anodic dissolution process has been established to be a seven-electron transfer process under nitrogen in ammonia–ammonium sulphate solutions and ammonia–ammonium carbonate solutions. The number of electrons transferred in the carbonate and sulphate salts suggests that the sulphur is oxidised to a thiosulphate intermediate and the copper and iron released as Cu+ and Fe2+. The Cu+ and Fe2+ is subsequently oxidised in solution in non-Faradaic reactions. The deportment of Fe2+ and S2O32- is affected by choice of the ammonium salt used in the leaching process. In the perchlorate salt, only five electrons are transferred, however observations made on the mineral surface after leaching do not support the formation of elemental sulphur. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis of the mineral surface suggest presence of an iron–sulphur surface layer completely free of copper under the ammonia–ammonium sulphate conditions, an iron-rich surface layer under ammonia–ammonium perchlorate solutions and absence of surface layer build up under ammonia–ammonium carbonate solutions. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processes for copper extraction provide a viable route to recover the metal from mixed and low-grade ores, as well as overcome the environmental challenges faced by the traditional pyrometallurgical processes. Chalcopyrite is not only the most abundant of the copper sulphides, but also the most stable, making it recalcitrant to hydrometallurgical processes. Hence, hydrometallurgical processing of chalcopyrite continues to be an attractive area of research due to the vaguely understood surface chemistry of the mineral in different aqueous media. Different approaches to hydrometallurgical treatment of chalcopyrite can be carried out. These include thermal treatment prior to leaching, direct leaching and direct electrochemical leaching (Venkatachalam, 1991). Direct leaching of chalcopyrite can be carried out in various solution systems, as reviewed by Roman and Benner (1973) and Venkatachalam (1991). Ammoniacal solutions are attractive and effective lixiviants that form stable amine complexes with some base-metal cations while rejecting iron. Leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions in the presence of an oxidant is possible due to the stabilisation of copper(I) and copper (II) by ammonia at elevated pH levels. In oxygenated ammonia solutions, it has been suggested that chalcopyrite dissolves according to Equation 1 (Beckstead & Miller, 1977a):"
