Model pillars of limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite having length to diameter ratios of 3:1, 2:1, 1:1, and 0.5:1 were broken in axial compression to determine whether lateral end constraint affected the breaking strength. Steel rings bonded to the ends of the model pillars with epoxy provided, during the loading cycle, a lateral end constraint of about 17 to 30 percent of the average axial stress. The effect of this constraint was to increase the breaking strength of the rock as compared to cylindrical pillars without constraint. The percentage increase in breaking strength varied with rock type and increased as the length to diameter ratio decreased. The maximum increase in breaking strength was 35 percent for marble pillars having a length to diameter ratio of 0.5:1. A theory was developed which relates the expected constraint to the physical properties of the ring and rock.

The Bureau of Mines investigated means of electrodepositing iridium to form thick coatings suitable for the protection of such metals as tungsten and molybdenum, which oxidize rapidly at high temperatures. Using a fused sodium cyanide bath, thick, adherent, and coherent deposits of iridium up to 15 mils thick were plated on tungsten and molybdenum substrates at 600° C and current densities of 10 to 100 ma/cm2. Limited oxidation testing of molybdenum encapsulated with pure iridium indicates that the coating may offer protection to approximately l,000° C in flowing air, but that at higher temperatures, the volatility of its oxide limits use of pure iridium. Alloy coatings of iridium with platinum, palladium, and rhodium up to 4 mils thick were formed from a fused sodium cyanide electrolyte; because their oxides are less volatile, these alloys may protect substrates at higher temperatures. Deposits made from aqueous electrolytes either had very low rates of deposition or were highly stressed and cracked when heavy deposits were made.

I have been asked to speak briefly about recent progress in the mining industry of the United States, and to touch on the general advancement of en- gineering science as applied to mining. By recent, I shall mean within the past 20 or 30 years. Such a period includes a great many of the changes which are of particular interest to the present generation of engineers, and the undergraduates of today will hardly turn back farther than the beginning of the present century in their study of develop- ment of methods and processes. Also, my own professional life spans this period, and I have seen or have been aware of most of these developments as they were taking place. In my review of developments, for the sake of simplicity and clarity, I shall deal separately with improvements in metal mining, coal mining, mechanical and electrical machinery for mines, metallurgy, petroleum engineering, and safety practices. Under each of these headings I have set down what appear to me to be the outstanding changes brought about during the past 2 or 3 decades. Other points will occur to other engineers; I do not represent that the following re- view is complete; it is only intended to be suggestive. In general, improvements in mining and metallurgical practices have come gradually, the charges being effected little by little, simultaneously in widely scattered places, and through the experience and inventive genius of many men. These changes have has small beginnings, and are generally the cumulative result of many steady and unsensational progressions, which still continue. What we today might be inclined to consider the culmination of a series of betterments in mining is, of course, but an instantaneous phase of developments which will continue in the future at even a more rapid pace than they have in the past. We are looking at but a flesh of a moving picture, with an endless reel to come after we finally leave the theatre. "Results of a research effort directed towards identifying and measuring the genotoxic properties of respirable particulate matter involved in mining exposures, especially those which may synergistically affect genotoxic hazard, are presented. Particulate matter emissions from a direct injection diesel engine have been sampled and assayed to determine the genotoxic potential as a function of engine operating conditions. Diesel exhaust from a caterpillar 3304 diesel engine, representative of the ones found in underground mines, rated 100 hp at 2200 rpm is diluted in a multi-tube mini-dilution tunnel and the particulate matter is collected on 70 mm fluorocarbon coated glass fiber filters as well as on S"" x 10"" hi-volume filters. A six mode steady state duty cycle was used to relate engine operating conditions to the genotoxic potential. Results to-date on diesel exhaust have indicated that use of a primary component of pulmonary surfactant as a medium for collecting and applying respirable particulate material to cells for mutagenicity testing offers a true representation of in-vivo delivery of such respired aerosols to pulmonary cells and the genetic material within. Protocols have been developed to sample and assay the diesel soot and diesel soot/mineral dust complexes which would not compromise the surf ace and physical properties of the particulate material. Evidence has been gathered to show that diesel soot expresses mutagenic potential as dispersions in DPL in the Ames tests as well as sister chromatid exchange activity in the animal lung fibroblast ·derived V79 cell line. The results are comparable to the standard solvent extraction procedure. INTRODUCTIONDiesel engines are primarily associated with transportation; however, they are also very common in the work place. Of particular concern is the use of diesel engines in mining operations. Currently there are 1,950 diesel machines working in underground coal mines throughout the country. These units are used in 151 mines encompassing nine different states (MSHA, 1991). It is believed the use of diesel powered equipment has contributed to higher productivity in these mines. However, the exhaust from diesel engines operated in underground mines has been a subject of concern during the past decade because of its suspected relationship with health aspects. The particulate matter generated by the diesel engine is of particular concern."

Beirut is the center of government for the whole area , about 60,000 square miles . Syria is essentially an agricultural country . There is little manufacturing ; and with the exception of the production of asphalt and salt , the mineral industries have not yet risen to commercial importance . Whether this condition is due to a dearth of workable deposits or merely to insufficient exploration is not apparent . The mineral resources , as reported by various authorities , include asbestos , asphalt rock , bitumen , chromite , coal , copper , gold , gypsum , iron , lead , magnesite , manganese , marble and other building stones , nickel , ocher , pandermite ( a hydrous borate of calcium) , petroleum , phosphate rock , pyrite , salt , silver , sulphur , tin , and titanium ( ilmenitic beach sands ) .

The Bureau of Mines studied solid-state electromigration to determine the value of the technique as a method of purifying cerium metal. Cerium metal in bars 6 inches long and 1/2 inch in diameter was refined at 600° C by solid-state electrolysis to remove iron, copper, and manganese. Iron and manganese were electrotransported to the anode and copper was electrotransported to the cathode. The concentration of iron at the anode of a cerium bar was 800 times greater than the concentration at the cathode. The concentration of manganese at the anode was twice the value at the cathode. The concentration of copper was 170 times greater at the cathode than at the anode. A radiotracer technique was used to follow the iron migration in the cerium metal. Molybdenum, silicon, and aluminum impurities were not electrotransported.

"Nearly every piece of electrical equipment used in mines ""breathes."" In other words, motors, controllers, rheostats, switches, and other similar equipment, even though encased in seemingly tight compartments, breathe in the atmosphere that surrounds them.As the apparatus is used, the temperature of metallic parts is changed generally in positive direction through the heat by friction and the heat due to the electric current. When the apparatus is idle it gradually cools down to the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere.This increase of temperature during operation and return to normal temperature when operation stops alternately raises and lowers the temperature of the atmosphere within the compartments which, in strict accordance with Charles' law -T = VT1 V'will expand or contract in proportion to any given temperature change.As compartments are not gas-tight, such expansion and contraction will force the atmosphere out of the compartment =on expansion and suck the surround¬ing atmosphere into the compartment during contraction, hence the term ""breathing.""Investigators of explosion-proof equipment have recognized that such an interchange would take place and have designed their equipment to safeguard possible explosions within the compartments."

"The phenomenon of re-entrainment is seen in environments such as sand dune formation, soil erosion, fugitive dust emission and the spread of radionuclides from accidents involving nuclear weapons. A thorough review of existing literature reveals that work on re-entrainment of dust in mine atmospheres is scant. The present study was undertaken as a part of ongoing research at the Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust at the Pennsylvania State University on the development of methods to predict ambient dust concentrations in mine atmospheres (Ramani, 1983). The contribution of re-entrainment to the spatial and temporal concentration of dust in mine airways is being studied. The research has included wind tunnel and in-mine studies.A set of seven experiments was performed under controlled conditions in the US Bureau of Mines' Lake Lynn Laboratory mine. Two types of source coal dust, anthracite and bituminous, were subjected to various airflow rates and were subjected to walking by two different individuals. Six sets of instruments were used along the test section for sampling airborne particles. The average air velocity just above the coal dust bed varied between 2.1 to 3.2 m/sec.Due to re-entrainment as a result of the airflow conditions, the average respirable dust concentration in the center of the mine airway increased to 0.09 mg!m3 (standard deviation= 0.03 mg/m3)from an initial value of 0.02 mg/m3. The concentration of all (total) airborne dust increased to 0.17 mg/m3 (standard deviation = 0.10 mg/m3) from an initial value of 0. 02 mg/m3. The action of people walking, however, caused higher amounts of re-entrainment. The average concentration of respirable and total dust at the center of the mine airway increased to values of 0. 28 mg/m3 (standard deviation of 0.12 mg/m3) and 1.53 mg/m3 (standard deviation of 1.0 mg/m3), from initial values of 0.03 and 0.05 mg/m3, respectively. Jr was observed that the dust concentrations were much higher near the floor, immediately at the end of the coal-dust bed.Depending on the level of activity and the amount of dust deposited in the mine airways, re-entrainment may become an important source of airborne dust in areas away from the point of actual mining."

The rate of oxidation of coals with nitric acid has been used by earlier investigators4 5 6/ for determining fusain and for studying petrographic composition. These workers accumulated considerable evidence indicating that, for coals ranging from lignite to low-volatile in rank, the method gives values for fusain that agree satisfactorily with those obtained by optical methods. One group5/even concluded that, when discrepancies are noted between results obtained by chemical and microscopic methods, the results based on the oxidation reaction are probably the more reliable. Unfortunately, after concluding that the method was valid, most of these workers apparently lost interest. As a result, no attempt to exploit or apply the method to problems of utilization has been reported. Recent studies of the influence of inert petrographic constituents on the properties of cokes made from various coals7/ have indicated a need for additional means of characterizing coals and blends used for carbonization.

The investigation of the zirconium-gadolinium equilibrium diagram was part of a program to investigate rare:earth alloys for use as nuclear reactor control materials. Investigation of the zirconium-gadolinium equilibrium diagram revealed a eutectic system with limited terminal solubilities and one peritectoid reaction. The eutectic composition occurs at about 82 percent gadolinium, and the eutectic isotherm, which occurs at 1,220 ±5° C., extends from about 12 to 99+ percent gadolinium. A peritectoid isotherm occurs at 890 ±5° C. and extends from about 2 to 99+ percent gadolinium. The solubility of gadolinium in beta zirconium decreases from about 12 percent at 1,220 ±5° C. to about 2 percent at 890 ±5° C. The solubility of gadolinium in alpha zirconium decreases from approximately 5 percent at 890 ±5° C. to between 2 and 3 percent at 600° C. Vary little solubility of zirconium in gadolinium was indicated. An allotropic transformation of gadolinium was observed at 1,260 ±5° C. A change of the gadolinium transformation temperature on alloying with zirconium was not observed.

This report describes an instrument designed by the Bureau of Mines for quantitatively identifying texture of rock surfaces produced by grinding or extremely rough surfaces beyond the range of commercial surface measuring instruments. The transducer for the instrument is a linear variable differential transformer that converts mechanical motion caused by surface roughness, waviness, and lay to an electrical output. The electrical output is recorded graphically as an X-Y plot of the line traversed on the rock surface. Details of the synthesized device and its calibration are given. The sensitivity of the unit is 2 percent of the scale setting of the amplifier. The horizontal scale is adaptable from ¼ inch to 15 inches of specimen length with a sensitivity of 0.01 inch if a 10 to 1 magnification is used and 0.1 inch if a 1 to 1 magnification is used.

The response of minerals in magnetic separators is in accordance to dynamic rather than static magnetic susceptibility values . The dynamic value varies with respect to both passage speed through the separating field and time of exposure in a preliminary treatment field . Tests on 16 minerals and solids have demonstrated that both of these factors affect different minerals in different ways .

As part of the Bureau of Mines subactivity in secondary resource recovery and to expand the Nation's mineral base, the Tuscaloosa Research Center made characterization and preliminary beneficiation studies of the waste residues from various coal-conversion processes: from pilot plant tests of the Synthane process for coal gasification, the Synthoil process for coal liquefaction, and the solvent-refined coal (SRC) process for sulfur removal from coal. Those coal conversion processes selected for this study were based on the availability of pilot plant samples. Physical, chemical, and mineralogical examinations of the wastes made to determine the mineral content prior to physical beneficiation tests indicated that in addition to significant quantities of carbon, some trace elements offer potential for concentration.

The Federal Bureau of Mines Boulder City Metallurgy Research Laboratory conducted experiments in order to develop a spectrochemical method for determining the concentrations of impurities In high-purity tungsten. This report presents a procedure, developed by these experiments, for determining 19 impurities in high-purity tungsten. Metal samples were thermally converted to the oxide, mixed with graphite, which was prepared and mixed with an internal-standard element, and excited in a d.c. arc. Sixteen of the impurity elements were determined with one set of conditions, using germanium as an internal standard. Lanthanum was used as an internal standard in the tests for boron and chromium. Molybdenum required the substitution of sodium chloride for the graphite and the use of copper electrodes. Data on the precision of the method are included in this report. The coefficients of variation vary considerably but average about 15 percent. Higher concentrations of impurities than those investigated may be determined with some modifications of the testing procedure, provided attention is given to the possibility of interelement interferences.

A new, cheaper precipitation scheme has been developed to produce purified zirconium oxide, Technical-grade sulfuric acid is used to precipitate a basic zirconium sulfate from a hot dilute hydrochloric acid solution. With close control of temperature, pH, and zirconium - sulfate ratio, excellent purification and complete zirconium recovery can be attained. The process has been successfully applied for 3 months and has proved to be a more satisfactory procedure than the ammonium phthalate process used previously. Burundi, a small central African republic located between Tanzania and Zaire, remained essentially a nation of small family farms in 1978-79 with approximately 95% of the population engaged in subsistance agriculture. Coffee and tea continued as the nation's major export commodities. Mineral exports, small tonnages of cassiterite, wolframite and bastnasite, accounted for an estimated 3% of total exports in 1978 and 2% in 1979, or $2 million2 in both years. Burundi's major mineral imports in 1978-79 were cement, iron and steel, and refined petroleum products. Abnormal weather conditions, a drop in world coffee prices in 1978, and the conflict in neighboring Tanzania and Uganda in late 1978 and early 1979 combined to re-strict economic growth in Burundi during 1978-79. The gross domestic product (GDP) posted a gain of 6.7% in real terms for 1978 and an estimated 2.5% for 1979 which was significantly less than the 13.7% recorded in 1977, a time of high world coffee prices. The manufacturing and construction sectors were hard hit in 1979 by the conflict between Burundi's eastern neighbors because of transport disruptions which made building materials and manufacturing inputs almost unobtainable.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting a series of rock mechanics investigations at the Lucky Friday Mine in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho. The present study uses rock deformation measurements to validate and calibrate a geomechanical model of the experimental Lucky Friday underhand longwall (LFUL) stope on the 5,100-ft level of the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. The calibrated three-dimensional, finite-element model and measurements of rock mass displacement show a correlation of 0.795. The calibration reduces rock mass modulus to 14 to 17 pet of laboratory values and rock mass strength (with an energy rule) to 37 to 41 pet of laboratory values. This model suggested that stress-related ground control problems would be encountered west of the stope where the vein makes a right-angle turn and then splits. Rock burst activity was concentrated in this area during mining of the LFUL stope.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has tested a personal dosimeter for measuring radon decay products that is manufactured by Tom Scurry Associates. The tests were made to determine the accuracy of the dosimeter system for record keeping of radiation exposures to radon decay products encountered in mining. The radioactivity-detecting head is based on a design developed by the USBM, and the associated air pump was developed by the manufacturer. The dosimeter system was tested in the USBM radon chamber. The detecting head uses CaF:Dy thermoluminescent phosphors and is mounted on a self-regulating air pump. Batteries supply power sufficient for an 8-h shift. The dosimeter system is worn on the miner's belt. Dosimeter calibration tests were performed by the USBM. In addition, the pumps were tested and evaluated under continuous flow conditions. The results of these tests indicate that the Tom Scurry Associates Model DOSI600 dosimeter is suitable for general use in mines where record keeping for natural radiation exposure is required.

The atmosphere in part of an air-sealed coal mine was monitored continuously through a drill hole for oxygen content to determine the effectiveness of sealing a mine against the entrance of air and the major force that caused the phenomenon of mine breathing through the overburden. The differential pressure across the seal and the barometric pressure on the outside also were recorded. A general correlation, obtained between the oxygen level, differential pressure, and barometric pressure, indicates that changes in air pressure are the cause for periodic replenishment of the oxygen in the mine. Mine effluent quality was determined by conditions in many sections of the mine and could not be related to the oxygen level at the drill hole.
