Analyses have been performed on geotechnical properties of copper, uranium and phosphate (gypsum) tailings materials, with the intent of identifying typical measures of variability within and among sites, and of characterizing such variability for use in reliability modeling of tailings embankments. In all, data from approximately 41 sites were analysed. Fairly consistent results were obtained for within site variabilities. However no one probabilistic model was found to be applicable to all sites. The distributional forms for most of the data sets are regular, and tend toward Normality when spatial trends are removed. At many of the sites sufficient in situ data were available to allow estimates of vertical autocorrelation distances and measurement noise. Available data indicate that variability in pore pressures may have a more important effect than strength property variation. A major problem in interpreting available strength property data results from the unknown drainage conditions during testing.

Owing to the broad scope of the content and the diversity of interests represented, the Annual Report for 1953 has been divided into two separate publications. Each has been published by the Bureau of Mines as a Report of Investigations, and the respective titles follow: R. I. 5043, Part I - Oil From Coal. R. I. 5044, Part II - Oil From Oil Shale. Identical in each report, the introduction summarizes research progress made in 1953 under the entire Synthetic Liquid Fuels program. This report summarizes the results of nearly 8 years research on and production of synthetic mica at the Electrotechnical Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines, Norris, Tenn. This program was undertaken at the request of the United States Department of the Navy and was financed mostly by the Army Signal Corps and the Navy Bureau of Ships through a contract with the Office of Naval Research, The original objectives included fundamental studies of fluor-phlogupite and other fluorine-micas and production of synthetic mica sheets on a pilot-plant scale. The first 3 years of this project were devoted mainly to a search for practical solutions of the many problems involved in designing and constructing a pilot plant for crystallizing fluor-phlogopite mica. The first and most urgent need was a suitable container for the corrosive mica melt. After extensive study, it was concluded that platinum, graphite, high-silica fire clay, and silicon carbide were the most promising refractories for crucibles; but none was perfect. Silicon car¬bide seemed to have the better combination of qualities, combining good corrosion resistance with oxidation resistance.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes the use of Bureau-developed flat and cylindrical hydraulic borehole pressure cells. A brief description of the fabrication, installation, and pressurizing equipment is given and pressurizing procedures are discussed. Theories available on evaluation of data from the flat and cylindrical pressure cells and examples of data analysis and stress evaluation are also presented.

This manual provides instructions for installing, operating, and maintaining a protective canopy on the Galis Mfg. Co. roof drill. The instructions are based upon two actual installations: one made in a mine on roof drill, model 300, and one in the factory. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopy are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other roof drills with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions herein would be applicable to the other roof drills and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.

In cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, Mass., and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co., a survey has been conducted continuously since 1929 by the Bureau of Mines to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. The New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. also has cooperated in the investigation, and tests have been made in its manholes since May 1, 1933. Yearly reports6/ on the results obtained since the beginning of the survey have been published. The method and procedure of conducting the survey in 1936 were the same as heretofore.

This paper is the third1 of a series of five papers that is to appear on smelting in the lead blast furnace. The objects of this investigation are to determine the conditions obtaining within the blast furnace be direct experimentation, and to correlate the behavior of the furnace at various times with the main factors governing the operation of the blast furnace, and metallurgical losses. The Bureau of Mines devised a test nipple for the field study of corrosion in the condensate-return lines of Federal heating plants. Corrosion surveys, made with this device, showed that the deterioration of the piping was caused principally by carbonic acid in the steam condensate. Corrosion problems were brought under control when the carbonic acid concentration in the condensate was decreased. In many instances, this was effected by decreasing the total carbon dioxide content of the feedwater; in others, the condensate acidity was neutralized with volatile, alkaline chemicals. Filming treatment with octadecylamine, reported successful in controlling return-line corrosion in industry, was much less effective in Federal area-heating plants. Laboratory study by the Bureau disclosed that octadecylamine is unstable in heating systems. Analytical methods were developed for this chemical and its degradation products in heating-plant condensate. Field surveys, in using these methods, confirmed the instability of the filming material. Laboratory tests showed that the degradation products are not useful film formers. Since filming treatment has little effect on condensate corrosivity, the piping was corroded where it was not coated by the treatment chemical.

Economic investigations indicate that bituminous coal can be mined underground in the Uinta region and marketed at a cost competitive with that of other energy sources in the West. A selling price of $3.90 per ton of coal was calculated from a cost analysis of a projected coal mine in the Emery coal- field of Utah. Although mines in some of the coalfields have extremely difficult mining conditions and cannot compete in the energy market at this price level, at least two other coalfields in the Uinta region contain coal reserves that could be mined and sold at a price of approximately $3.90 per ton. Projections by power companies and other coal-consuming industries indicate a strong future market for the large coal reserves in the Uinta region.

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal in the United States suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known measured and indicated recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making. This is the eighth of a series of reports giving the results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. (See appendix.) This report covers Jefferson County, Pa., which comprises parts of Marienville, Hallton, Ridgway, Brookville, DuBois, Penfield, Smicksburg, and Punxsutawney quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A short resume of the chemical and carbonizing properties of the coals is included. Data on the coal beds in the county were obtained from mining companies, land companies, individual landowners, and other sources of authentic information. A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick, These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps. Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

In the usual volumetric determination of uranium, the solution containing uranium is reduced in a Jones reductor, yielding a mixture of trivalent and tetravalent uranium; the trivalent uranium is oxidized to the tetravalent state by bubbling a stream of air through the solution. The resulting solution of. Tetravalent uranium is titrated with a standard oxidant, generally sulfatoceric acid, dichromate, or permanganate; It seemed likely that the, same general procedure could be used in determining semimicro quantities of uranium if the conditions affecting the variables involved were understood more clearly than at present. In the method described below, the use of ferric sulfate to oxidize tetravalent uranium allows the titration to be made at room temperature in an essentially colorless solution with sulfatoceric acid. The latter oxidant its turn permits the use of the very stable indicator, ferroin, with its sharp color.., change and exactly reproducible blanks. Solutions of uranyl sulfate were prepared by diluting a stock solution that had been standardized gravimetrically according to the method of Lundell and Knowles (8).3/ Solutions of sulfatoceric acid were prepared according to the directions of G. F. Smith (12) and were standardized against arsenic trioxide in the presence of osmic acid according to the directions of Gleu. The cerium solutions were stored in 18-liter carboys fitted with siphon arrangements so that the bottles did not need to be opened and protected from light in a dark cupboard. Under these conditions, even the 0.01 N solution changed by less than 1 part per thousand over a period of about 6 months.

The Kasna Creek copper deposit near Lake Kontrashibuna in the Lake Clark region, Alaska, was the object of an investigative project by the Bureau of Mines during the fall of 1948. Recessed because of inclement weather, it was completed in 1949. This project was a part of the Bureau of Mines program in Alaska for the development of critical and strategic minerals. The ore bodies are contact-replacement deposits in limestone. Mineralization is mainly specular and micaceous hematite associated with chalcopyrite, calcite, chlorite, quartz, and amphibole. The deposit, on the right limit of Kasna Creek approximately 2 miles from the shore of Lake Kontrashibuna, is composed of two mineralized zones that range in altitude from 2,350 to 2,650 feet. This report contains a brief history of the prospect, description of the physical setting of the property, its geology, and the factual results of the Work performed by the Bureau of Mines.

This Bureau of Mines publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 495 natural gas samples from 21 States and three foreign countries. Of this total, 376 samples were collected during calendar year 1968. The remaining 119 analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the results Here not received until 1968. All samples were collected as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917 and in late 1965 was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Ten previous publications have presented results of 8,165 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Hines Helium Activity prior to 1968. The objective of the project descibed in this report was to design and field test a model health and safety program at a coal mining company and a gold mining company. The model program was implemented primarily by providing training on loss control, accident investigation, and the operation of mobile equipment; and by providing technical assistance to help solve health and safety problems. Data were obtained from company records on occupational injuries, illnesses, accidents, and "near misses"; and through direct observation of employees performing a large number of randomly selected jobs. At the coal mine, employees were observed five times over a 15-month period. At the gold mine, employees were observed six times over a 16-month period. During the study, the percentage of sampled jobs containing one or more safety deficiencies decreased from 74.3 pct to 36.6 pct at the coal mine and from 86.4 pct to 19.1 pct at the gold mine. Work on this project was performed by Woodward Associates, Inc., under a Bureau of Mines contract.

"INTRODUCTION This report is the first of several dealing with the application of flotation methods for beneficiating the calcareous and siliceous red iron ores and ferruginous sandstones of the Birmingham district. The flotation study was part of a general investigation of the concentratability of various iron ores of Alabama and other Southeastern States undertaken by the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Ala.Batch testing and pilot-plant flotation testing of the calcareous red ores of the Birmingham district have been in progress for several years, and although some phases of the study are not yet completed, enough data are available to indicate that many of the ores will yield marketable-grade concentrates with good recovery.The first flotation tests on the calcareous red ores employing conventional methods either the iron oxides or the siliceous gangue materials failed to give the desired results. The inferior separations obtained or prohibitive reagent requirements made the methods unattractive. Other more effective flotation methods were sought. A laboratory study of various reagents was undertaken. It resulted in the development of two attractive methods embracing anionic flotation of the activated siliceous gangue from the retarded iron oxides. The methods were similar in that fatty acid or soap-collecting agents were employed in strongly alkaline pulps to float the naturally activated quartz from the iron-ore pulps. The methods differed, however, in the addition agent employed to retard the hematite or hematite and calcite. By proper choice and quantity of the addition agent, the calcite could be floated with the quartz or retarded with the hematite as desired. Ability to recover or reject the calcite gives added flexibility to the separation. Although the methods have their limitations and cannot be considered ""cure-alls,"" they have given encouraging results on a number of calcareous red ores that heretofore proved difficult to concentrate by conventional flotation procedures."

Through the hearty cooperation of the State coal-mine inspectors, the bureau is able to present in this paper a a complete statement of the coal-mine fatalities occurring throughout the United States during the calendar year 1919. The reports received from the inspectors for the year just closed show a reduction of 10.58 per cent in coal-mine fatalities as compared. with 1918, while in 1918 the reduction was 4.3 per cent from 1917 figures. The total number killed was 2,307 in 1919 and 2,580 in 1918, a reduction of 273. There was a decrease of 128, or 25 per cent, in fa tali ties resulting from mine cars and locomotives, and a decrease of 198, or 15 per cent, in the fa tali ties due to fall of coal or rock. Surface accidents show a decline of about 25 per cent as compared with the previous year. There were, however, increases in accidents due to gas and dust explosions and also explosives. There occurred during the year nine disasters in which five or more men were killed, representing a total of 201 fatalities. The worst disaster of the year was the one occurring at the Baltimore Tunnel No. 2, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., resulting from the explosion or burning of a number of kegs of powder, by which 92 lives were lost. This disaster emphasizes the need for stricter regulations relating to hauling men and explosives into the mine at the same time. The question of whether electricity was responsible or not does not affect the consideration of the various dangers which arise in underground transportation and handling of explosiveB. At best the handling and hauling of explo.sives is hazardous and such being the case, no one, other than the necessary attendants, should be permitted to ride in cars or cages transporting explosives. As a result of this disaster, the report b of the coroner's jury to the governor of Pennsylvania brings out some important dangers to be avoided in the use and transportation of explosives.

Since the return of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division of the Bureau of Mines to normal peacetime functions following World War II, a coordinated program of oil and gas development and production research has been in prog- ress, and the importance of the problems has been evaluated so that the Bureau can render greater service to the oil and gas industry. Among the problems associated with development and production research, those concerned with efficient utilization of the Nation's reserves of hydro- carbons contained in gas-condensate type reservoirs continue to receive major emphasis. For a number of years an important part of the Bureau's work has been the study of two pressing problems associated with production from such reservoirs; first; an investigation of fluid properties, and the second, finding a means of controlling corrosion. Studies of the characteristics of gas-condensate fluids have resulted in the publication of a number of reports, which cover a broad field. In general they deal with subjects such as the properties of a fluid from a well; development of research equipment, means of combatting corrosion, and the many aspects of gas-condensate engineering. To provide experimental data on relative liquid and gas volumes and critical pressures and temperatures, a windowed cell was constructed that permits ob- servation of the fluid phase while making the tests. Experimentation in the field on the use of inhibitors to control corro- sion of equipment in gas-condensate wells has disclosed that solutions of chromate are effective retardants of corrosion. Engineering field studies of the Carthage and New Hope gas-condensate fields are in progress, and reports on the Sheridan and Lake Creek fields have been completed. The Kirkland Lake Geld Mining Co.'s mill is located on Government Road at the west end of the productive part of the Kirkland Lake mining area, 1 mile west of the village of Kirkland Lake. The crushing plant is connected to the shaft house of No. 2 shaft, which is now the only operating shaft.
