"A morphological and chemical study of the Great Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. (GCOS) fly ash has been carried out. Extensive scanning electron microscopy, as well as light microscopy, showed that the GCOS fly ash consists of two fractions, one composed of unburnt or partially burnt irregular-shaped carbon particles and an ash fraction composed of transparent and opaque, often coloured, glassy spherical particles-some of them cenospheres (hollow spheres) and the others plerospheres (hollow spheres packed with smaller spheres). Microcrystals (0.1 to 0.3 um long) growing on the inner and outer surfaces of some of the spheres were also noted and found to contain more Fe, Ti, Ni and V than the spheres.The carbon-free GCOS fly ash particle size follows a lognormal distribution, with a geometric median particle size (by count) of3.8um and a geometric standard deviation of 1.84. IntroductionCanada's current energy situation strongly suggests that oil from the Alberta tar sands deposits will probably be recovered more extensively in the future. Today's commercially proven technology to recover oil from the Athabasca tar sands, as practised by Great Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. (GCOS), involves two major operations, namely: separation of the bitumen from the sand and upgrading of the bitumen to refinery oil; the production of significant amounts of petroleum coke and sulphur during the bitumen upgrading process. The bulk of the petroleum coke is burnt in boilers to fulfill the energy requirements of the entire operation. The boiler ash, which contains appreciable amounts of metals, such as vanadium, nickel, titanium, iron, aluminum and other elements, is collected in the boiler hoppers and cyclones of the petroleum coke-fired steam generation plants. Thus, as well as representing a petroleum resource, the tar sands represent a resource for vanadium and possibly other metals providing that metal recovery processes can be developed."

"Most of the recent large discoveries of zinc, lead and silver in Western Canada are Paleozoic-aged stratiform deposits that occur within the limits of the tectonic sub-province of the Canadian Cordillera known as Selwyn Basin. Bounded on either side by coeval carbonate platforms. Selwyn Basin trends northwest for 1300 km from northeast British Columbia to Alaska. Paleozoic rocks of Selwyn Basin consist primarily of chert, shale and coarser-grained clastic sedimentary rocks with minor volcanic rocks.The Selwyn Basin deposits have few counterparts elsewhere in Canada, but have a close similarity in geological setting, mineralogy and morphology to well-known deposits such as McArthur (HYC) in Australia, Meggen and Rammelsberg in West Germany, and Sullivan in British Columbia. Recent studies of these deposits have led to an emerging, but now generally accepted, model of ore deposition in which stratabound zinc-lead-silver shale-hosted or ""sedimentary-exhalative"" (sedex) deposits are precipitated in active tectonic environments from metalliferous geothermal brines that rise to the sea floor along deep-seated fault zones. Although their mineralogy and ore metal zoning can be similar to that of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, most sedex deposits have only a weak genetic link with volcanism.Sedex mineralization in Selwyn Basin has been identified within three separate ages of shale or its metamorphosed equivalent. The lower Cambrian-age Anvil Camp in central Yukon Territory contains the only producing mine (Faro). Important lower Silurian-age zinc-lead mineralization is at Howards Pass along the Yukon - Northwest Territories border. Barite and zinc-lead-barite mineralization of upper Devonian age occurs across Selwyn Basin. Potentially economic deposits have been found at Macmillan Pass, along the Yukon - Northwest Territories border and in the Gataga District of northeastern British Columbia."

Geophysical techniques have played a pivotal role in northern kimberlite exploration since the initial discovery at Point Lake in 1991. In the Slave Craton and surrounding regions, there are definite contrasts in physical properties between kimberlite intrusions and surrounding bedrock. Kimberlite commonly displays higher magnetic susceptibility, distinctive remnant magnetism, low electrical resistivity and lower density than surrounding rocks. In addition, the distinctive geometry of kimberlite pipes is reflected in geophysical responses which further facilitates target discrimination. There has been an evolution in geophysical exploration strategies over the past 12 years. Helicopter total magnetic field and electromagnetic (HEM) surveys have proven to the most cost-effective means of conducting first pass investigations in prospective areas. During the early 1990's, total magnetic field and frequency domain electromagnetic surveys were virtually the sole techniques employed during follow-up surveys. Inevitably, the initially high rates of kimberlite discovery declined in the areas surrounding the original finds. Marginal magnetic and EM anomalies were all that remained to be tested and this spurred interest in the improvement of existing interpretation algorithms and in the application of additional complementary techniques to reduce the exploration risk. Gravity has become a popular third survey following the deployment of the Falcon (TM) airborne gravity gradiometer system by BHP Billiton in 1999 and improvements in ground techniques. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) has proven to be particularly useful in delineating kimberlite pipes following drill discovery and in exploring for kimberlite dykes in settings where indicator mineral trains indicate such targets are likely. Seismic methods have been tested for both reconnaissance and delineation but remain underemployed. Given the high cost of drilling in the North and the proven success of geophysical techniques in reducing exploration risk, it is likely that an increasingly diverse range of geophysical techniques and innovative interpretation techniques will continue to be applied in kimberlite exploration.

"Since all gold mills must sooner or later be cleaned up for permanent shutdown it was felt that a record of what was done at one mill might be of some help to those who will have to do the same job in the future,In cleaning up the mill of Delnite Mines Limited, I had an advantage that most mill superintendents will not have in that I started up the mill and was there until it was shut down, It was also known for two years approximately when the shutdown would be and for a year almost the exact time. This, of course, made careful planning possible and enabled me to get advance information that wouldn't have been available had the shutdown come unexpectedly,Early in 1964 calculation of ore reserves and the known number of working places available indicated that the mine would run out of ore sometime in August or September but not later than October, The time of course would vary with the number of competent miners that could be retained until the shutdown. Since the mining method used exclusively on the ore then remaining was cut and fill, it was known that once mining operations ceased it would require at most two days to crush and grind the last of the ore.In March 1 964 I took samples of the concrete floor under the precipitation presses, in the flux room and furnace room of the refinery and from the assays obtained proved that there would be no profit in breaking up the concrete to recover the gold from it, Samples taken from the top half inch of the concrete floors assayed less than 0, 10 oz per ton,"

"This is a prelirr1inary report on automatic control at East Malartic Gold Mines.After installation of the cyclones in the East Malartic grinding circuit, the interest was aroused in the automatic control system for the circuit. Investigations were made as to the possibilities of such an installation. This resulted in a preliminary survey of the circuit by Milltronics Ltd and an analysis of the circuit by Mines Branch personnel. A study of the investigation and analysis indicated that a cost reduction and improved efficiency could be expected by the installation of an automatic control system in the grinding circuit. It was also indicated tl1at such installation should pay for itself within a year. This was the point that sold management on such installation. The need of three operators was expected to be eliminated .The installation was to consist of a central control panel, microphoncs on each mill, regulation of feed rate, pneumatic valves for addition of solt1tions, density control of the cyclone overflow, which is a grinding circuit product, rod mill feed box plugging detector and a conveyer weightometer for tonnage indication and control.As well as the elimination of one man per sl1ift, other benefits which were to be received but unable to estimate were: 1) More tonnage per clay by operation of the mills at the proper capacities. 2) Lower grinding costs. Less under-loading should result in less steel wear and lower pumping cost. In the condition of overloading, a coarser grind is obtained resulting in greater impeller and liner wear. The overloading and underloading showed up on the n1icropl1oncs. 3) An improvement in the recovery as a result of less over-load. The tailings loss from a coarser grind are not as frequent."

The cathode production of Toyo Smelter and Refinery, owned by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. reached 450,000 tons per year in 2016 with three tank houses. Niihama tank house commenced operations in 1919 with conventional sheet cathode technology. Approximately 100 years of operation experience and the technical development enabled that the current density of Niihama tank house and the Toyo tank house #1 increased to 320 A/m2. These operation techniques were utilized at the Toyo tank house #2 which started in 2005, and its current density reached up to 350 A/m2 with permanent cathode technology. In order to achieve high current efficiency under condition of 350 A/m2 operation at Toyo tank house #2, continued efforts had been made to verticality of anodes and permanent cathodes. To improve verticality of anodes and cathodes, reduction of short circuit ratio by changing the shape of the anode, optimizing the anode pressing machine and off-line process for rectifying the distortion of permanent cathodes was carried out. In addition, concentration control of electrolyte and expansion of Ni removing ability from the electrolyte prevented passivation. Finally, more than 96% of the current efficiency was stably confirmed. INTRODUCTION Today, Toyo Smelter and Refinery of Sumitomo Metal Mining operates three tank houses in Japan, namely, Toyo tank house #1, Toyo tank house #2, and Niihama tank house with a total capacity of 450,000 metric tons of copper cathodes. Figure 1 shows the trend of cathode copper production and the current density at three tank houses over the last 10 years. Cathode production by Toyo Smelter and Refinery reached 450,000 tons per year in 2016 with three tank houses.

Abstract- Approaches to mineral potential mapping based on weights of evidence generally use binary maps, whereas, real-world geospatial data are mostly multi-class in nature. The consequent reclassification of multi-class maps into binary maps is a simplification that might result in a loss of information. This paper describes results of using multi-class evidential maps in an extended weights-of-evidence model vis-à-vis results of using binary evidential maps in a simple-weights-ofevidence model. The study area in the south-central part of Aravalli province (western India) hosts a number of SEDEX-type base metal deposits in Proterozoic supracrustal rocks. Recognition criteria for base metal deposits were represented as both multi-class and binary evidential maps. The known mineral deposits were divided into two subsets, viz., the training and the validation subsets. The training subset was used to calculate, for the evidential maps, the weights, contrasts, and posterior probabilities and their variances. The distributions of expected frequencies of base metal deposits estimated from the posterior probabilities and the observed frequencies were compared using standard goodness-of-fit tests to verify conditional independence of the input evidential maps. The posterior probabilities from both the models were mapped and interpreted to classify the study area into zones favorable, permissive, and non-permissive for base metal deposit occurrence. As compared to the simple weights-of-evidence model, the extended weights-of-evidence model results in more robust and finely differentiated posterior probabilities in favorable and permissive zones and has a better prediction rate. The results also reveal that the statistical properties of the weights of evidence, the contrasts, and the posterior probabilities are not significantly degenerated by using multi-class evidential maps in weights-of-evidence modelling.

"Solids concentration (% solids) profiles and the clear liquid/slurry interface level (mudline) were determined from conductivity measurements in thickeners at Falconbridge' s Strathcona mill (Ni concentrate and non-mag thickeners) and Kidd Creek Division (Cu, Zn concentrates and final tails in the concentrator and thickeners in the Zn plant).The conductivity measurement system consisted of a probe 1.5 m in length with 24 electrode cells, a 24-channel relay, a conductivity meter and a computer. A conductivity profile is collected which locates the mud-line by the sharp change in conductivity. The conductivity measurements are readily converted to solids concentration profiles without need for calibration.The results from the conductivity measurements were compared with those from pressure profiles and direct measurements on local samples obtained using a modified Noranda sampler.It is concluded that the conductivity technique is applicable to locate the mud-line and to estimate the solids concentration profiles in thickeners. This on-line information could improve the operational efficiency of industrial thickeners.INTRODUCTIONAn automated, on-line technique for detecting the clear liquid/slurry interface (or mudline) and the variation in solids concentration with depth would enhance thickener operation and control. In some processes such enhanced control offers significant benefits. For example, in hydrometallurgical operations solid/liquid separation is often the process limiting step. Water treatment plants are increasingly expected to operate remotely and reliable sensing is vital.Current attempts to detect the mud-line include reflection of some signal (e.g. sonar), floats (Dahlstrom, 1985) and measurement of pressure (Rosenblum, 1991), and in one case, natural radioactivity of the solids (Johnston and Simic, 1991). A recent commercial development uses reflection from a vertical array of optical transmitters/sensors, which also gives local solids concentration (BTG Inc., 1991)."

"Operations started at BCL in December 1973J and the smelter is currently in the seventh year of its fifth campaign. The next major shutdown is scheduled for 1995. During the current campaign, a number of major on-line refurbishments have been carried out without any significant disruption to production. These include the complete rebuild of both drying plant electrostatic precipitators, the installation of a new electrostatic precipitator at the flash furnace, the conversion to a distributed control system throughout the smelter, and the installation of a converter air blowing control system.IntroductionBCL Limited operates a nickel-copper mine in northeastern Botswana approximately 100 km southwest of Francistown. Surface operations for the production of high-grade nickel-copper matte at a design capacity of 42 000 metric tonnes per annum, were commissioned in December 1973. Detailed descriptions of the mine and surface facilities have been presented previously(1-3).Over the years, a number of major engineering modifications and metallurgical projects have been carried out to overcome operating difficulties. improve metal recoveries, increase production rates and provide a better working environment.One of the major results of these projects was an increase in the 19805 in flash furnace feed capacity from 70 t/h to 120 t/h of new concentrate with a nominal feed rate of 105 t/h being achieved.(4)Because of the ore characteristics, i.e. a high mass fraction of ore reporting to concentrate, BCL operates one of the highest capacity spray drying plants and flash smelting furnaces in the world(5).A schematic of the BCL smelter is shown in Figure 1. "The Kipawa yttrium-zirconium prospect is located about 150 km south of Noranda, Quebec. Yttrium-zirconium mineralization occurs in an elongate, regionally metamorphosed and deformed peralkaline complex in the Grenville terrain. The mineralized zone, as defined by =.0.10% Y2O3, is 1300 m long and 10 m to 30 m wide. Zirconium content typically ranges from 0.50 to 1.20% ZrO2, The mineralized zone strikes northwest and dips 20 degrees to 35 degrees to the southwest. It occurs at the structural base of the peralkaline complex in syenite gneiss and calc-silicate rocks and is conformable with both the footwall contact of the complex, and the layering and gneissosity in the enclosing rocks. Minerals of economic interest are eudialyte (sodium-zirconium silicate), mosandrite (sodium-titanium silicate), britholite (calcium-silica phosphate), and a few other uncommon zirconium and titanium silicate minerals.The highest and most continuous yttrium grades occur in the upper part of the syenite gneiss unit in areas containing eudialyte, mosandrite and minor britholite. Yttrium also occurs in britholite in calc-silicate rocks and in mosandrite in syenitic rocks in the lower part of the syenite gneiss unit. Both the yttrium-bearing minerals and yttrium grades are erratic in the lower part of the unit. Zirconium is generally more uniformly distributed than yttrium. A peralkaline granite gneiss phase of the complex intrudes the syenite gneiss and possibly truncates it, and the mineralization, near the southern boundary of the mineralized zone.The mineralized zone is coincident with a radiometric anomaly and discontinuous yttrium and zirconium soil anomalies.More drilling and metallurgical studies will be required to determine the economic viability of the yttrium and zirconium mineralization at Kipawa."

"IntroductionThe Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) is constantly searching for new technologies that will enhance the marketability of its coal. One technology which shows promise in utilizing Cape Breton coal while at the same time addressing the traditional problem of high sulphur inherent in the Sydney coalfield, is coal-water fuel (CWF).The CWF process incorporates a physical change of coal by grinding it to a flour-like consistency and then mixing additives with it to make a fine coal slurry. The result is a liquid dispersion of fine coal particles that looks like oil, stores and flows like oil but burns like coal. The equipment used in the CWF process is standard mineral processing equipment but application of the equipment to manufacture a specific coal particle size and the specified additives used in the mixing make it a unique technology.The product, which CBDC calls Carbofuel, consists of 70% coal, 29.5% water and 0.5% chemical additives. The key properties of the product are: (I) high solids loading, (2) medium viscosity levels, (3) stability against sedimentation, and (4) good atomization behaviour. Carbofuel specifications are presented in Table I. Carbofuel ProductionThe production of Carbofuel is based on the controlled processing of coal. This involves wet grinding of the coal to a specified fine size (-250 um), cleaning this fine product to remove mineral impurities and formulating (with chemical additives) a finalproduct from the cleaned coal. The flow diagram in Figure 1 indicates the processing circuit for Carbofuel production.CBDC operates a 7-tonne-per-hour continuous production plant complete with state-of-the-art control, full laboratory services, product storage and loadout facilities. The plant has operated since 1983 and has produced over 12000 tonnes for several major demonstrations. The plant is shown in Figure 2."

"Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd, Laronde Division, is a gold operation processing ore containing copper and zinc. Copper is recovered as a concentrate prior to gold cyanidation.Copper concentrate grade was improved with the implementation of an on-stream analyzer. Further improvements to the copper concentrate grade could be achieved throughefficient zinc depression.High cyanide cost linked to the copper content in the flotation circuit tails, prompted some modifications to the flotation circuit. Economics and environmental issues were considered. A Maxwell cell was retrofitted with an Outokumpu HG cell mechanism stabilizing it's operation. Secondly a flotation column was added to increase circuit capacity.This paper will address flotation circuit operation difficulties, successes and results achieved before and after modifications.RESUMELes Mines Agnico-Eagle division Laronde sont considéré comme étant un producteur d'or. Pour cette raison, certaines modifications à la flottation sont devenues nécessaires. Des facteurs d'ordre économique et environnemental ont été considérées. "IntroductionThis paper describes how the introduction of two blasting techniques and the resuItant development of new dragline digging methods have increased the productivity of single- and double-seam dragline operations at the Rietspruit opencast mine.LocationRietspruit , one of South Africa's largest opencast strip mines, is situated some 11 5 kilometres east of Johannesburg in the Witbank coal field.BusinessRietspruit is a joint venture between Transvaal Consolidate d Land and Exploration Company (T.C.L.) and Shell, South Africa. Rietspruit is administered and managed by Rand Mines, the Mining division of Barlow Rand, transportation and marketing being the responsibility of Shell. The total saleable coal product, approximately 5,5 million tons per annum, is exported via Richards Bay.Presplitting and Throw BlastingPresplitting was initially introduced in September 1980, as a means of dewatering t he overburden and mid burden to facilitate the use of dry-mix explosives a s opposed to slurry explosives.The utilization of the throw blasting technique arose as a direct result of observed ground movement after the successful introduction of presplitting. The first trials commenced in March 1981 on the double-seam operation. The methods, economics and resulting advantages are fully described elsewhere. A brief description follows.Method of PresplittingAfter determining the desired presplit line, 250-mm holes are drilled to top of coal at 4-m to 6-m intervals, dependent on the competency of the rock overlying the coal. A single 60-kg charge of slurry explosives is located at the bottom of each hole, no tamping is used and all the holes are detonated simultaneously. The results are a competent, straight, vertical highwall. This enables accurate control of the first row of blast holes closest to the highwall, which is a prime requisite for successful throw blasting."

The leach solutions of waste of printed circuit boards (WPCB) may contain a wide range of base and precious metals with different concentrations due to heterogeneity of these wastes in composition. Therefore, selection of a suitable metal recovery method is of practical importance for downstream processing of pregnant leach solutions of WPCB. Sulphuric acid leaching of WPCB in the presence of a suitable oxidant is capable of dissolving base metals as well as precious metals such as silver. In this study, cementation of silver from sulphuric acid leach solutions of WPCB using metallic copper, aluminum and zinc was studied. The WPCB sample was assayed to have a silver content of 694 g/t. A synthetic leach solution containing 20 mg/L Ag in sulphuric acid solution (0.51 M H2SO4) was prepared based on the silver concentration in pregnant leach solutions of oxidative sulphuric acid leaching tests. Total sulphate concentration ([SO4 2-]T) was kept constant using sodium sulphate at 1 M. Metallic powders of copper (-850 +600 µm), aluminum (-425 +45 µm) and zinc (-45 µm) were used in the cementation tests. The effects of metal type (Cu, Al or Zn), dosage of metal powders (above the stoichiometric ratio by up to 2000-fold) and temperature (20-80°C) on the rate and extent of silver extraction from the solution was investigated. The effect of presence of copper on the cementation performance was also tested. Under suitable conditions high silver recoveries (>90%) was achieved using metallic copper and zinc while aluminum yielded the lowest silver recovery (i.e. 40% Ag). The kinetics of cementation by zinc was comparatively higher than that of other metals. Increasing the temperature was observed to significantly enhance both the rate and extent of silver cementation. SEM-EDS studies were performed to characterise the metallic powders after cementation.

"At Teck-Corona Operating Corporation's David Bell Mine, a successful water quality management strategy has been established. This resulted from the development and application of process technology, allowing year round discharge of an effluent exceeding the chemical and biological standards set by the Ministry of Environment. This strategy aims at minimizing contaminant levels of effluents through optimization of reagent selection and reduction of effluent volumes through maximizing reclaim water usage. Concentrator and effluent treatment plant operating practices, process chemistry and the results of the water quality management strategy are reviewed.IntroductionThe David Bell Mine is located in the Hemlo gold camp 42 km east of Marathon, Ontario. The concentrator has a design throughput of 1000 tonnes per day. The processing of the run of mine ore ( - 15cm) involves the following unit operations: grinding in a semi-autogenous mill followed by a ball mill, thickening, pre-oxidation , cyanidation, and carbon-in-pulp gold recovery followed by electrowinning and refining.The David Bell Mine water quality management strategy is composed of the following items (Goodfellow and Meyer, 1991):• natural destruction of cyanide contained in the tailing water in a large shallow tailing pond ;• preliminary treatment of reclaim water in the grinding circuit for cyanide and heavy metal removal;• pre-oxidation of sulphide minerals in pipe reactors to reduce cyanide consumption using pure oxygen;• pH control in the grinding, pre-aeration and leach circuits to minimize the dissolution of stibnite while maximizing gold recovery; • close control of cyanide addition rates to the leach circuit to maintain the lowest possible levels;• a carbon column for gold recovery;• an effluent treatment plant for antimony and heavy metal removal; and• the use of final treated effluent for industrial water underground to minimize fresh water consumption."

"In addition to the actual energy consumed, billing is dependent on the peak load and the power factor. The lower the power factor goes, the higher will be the penalty the consumer pays. The principles of a power factor regulator, the two ways of improving the power factor and methods for calculating the capacitor values required will be described.The rate structure of the utility company is founded on three cornerstones: the energy consumed during a given period of time and two penalties imposed when the power factor is low or the power demand is high. Even though the normal consumption of a customer might be 10 kW, with a peak demand of 20 kW only once a month, the wiring and associated equipment at the input to the customer's plant will have to accommodate this peak demand. The power company has no means of forecasting these demands and cannot therefore provide the additional equipment necessary. So it exacts a penalty, and the customer must take all possible steps to avoid these peak power demands. This can be accomplished by using an automatic peak load regulator which will selectively disconnect the loads which are not essential in the operation of a plant .The principles of such a controller will be described.Principles of power factor regulatorsThe operating principles of a power factor regulator will now be described. "The Lac Knife graphite deposit was estimated, as part of a feasibility study, using a geostatistical ore reserve estimation method: ordinary kriging. Based on the geology and its interpretation, the results of a variogram study, and the statistical parameters of the grade distribution of the core samples and the composites through the mineralization, the deposit was divided into three separate zones (west, centre and east), and each of these zones was then analyzed and kriged independently.The geological ore reserve estimation results of ordinary kriging are compared to the results of a conventional method (sections) used previously. The two methods gave almost similar reserve figures. The conventional method provided a +2% estimation for tonnage and + 10% for grade because it ignored the spatial relation between sections and samples, and ordinary kriging gave a more accurate longitudinal definition of the deposit.Finally, the paper concludes with the advantages of proceeding with ordinary kriging, namely: higher flexibility (change of cut-off grade), better deposit resolution and enhanced selectivity for the design of the open pit.IntroductionWithin the context of a complete feasibility study for the Société d' Exploration Minière Mazarin Inc., specialists of the Mines and Geology Division of Roche Ltd., Consulting Group, defined a modelling method appropriate to the graphite deposit of the Lac Knife property near Fennont. Many patterns were considered. Based on the geology of this deposit, the planned mining method, the statistical parameters of grade distribution and the variogram study, the process of reserve estimation retained was to use the ordinary kriging in a selective way. It was required because the geometry of the deposit is such that it was unthinkable to apply ordinary kriging without restrictions.This paper gives a detailed explanation of the observations and interrogations which led to the choice of this ore reserve estimation method, and the calculation procedure itself."

"The Monkman Coal Property is located in the Northeast Coal Block of British Columbia. It is divided into the Duke Mountain Block on the north east and the Dip Slope on the west. Together, these areas cover 39,503 ha of coal licences.The property is underlain by Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous marine and continental sedimentary rocks. Economic coal measures are contained within the Gates Formation. Exploration of the property began in the early I970s, with drilling commencing in 1975. To date, 255 holes have been drilled and nine adits have been driven to recover unoxidized coal samples.The property has a geological resource potential of 2.8 billion tonnes of medium and high-volatile bituminous coal. Medium-volatile bituminous reserves, totalling 68.9 million ROM tonnes at an over-all strip ratio of 6.3:1, have been identified in three pit areas in the Duke Mountain Block.Construction start-up will commence when sales contracts are arranged. The clean coal will be exported via the Ridley Island Terminal at Prince Rupert.IntroductionThe Monkman Coal Property is located in the Northeast Coal Block of British Columbia in the southern port ion of the Peace River Coalfield. The coal field encompasses a strike length of 250 km of Lower Cretaceous coal-bearing strata in which 13 companies have identified several billion tonnes of resources and several hundred million tonnes of reserves. Currently, two companies with contracts are in the construction phase, and are scheduled to produce coal by early 1984. Quintette Coal Ltd. has a contract with Japanese steel mills to supply annually 5.0 million tonnes of metallurgical and 1.5 million tonnes of thermal coal. Teck Corporation (Bullmoose property) has a contract to supply 1.7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually."

"Unanticipated low recovery or extraction of gold from heap leachable are can often be attributed 10 phenomena such as non-uniform percolation (channelling) of solution through heaps, excessively slow percolation rates due to densification of ore during stacking on the pads and parasitic or competing reactions of the cyanide solution with undesirable elements or geochemical ""impurities"" in the ore. The nature and causes of these phenomena are discussed in this paper, and it is suggested that geotechnical and geochemical expertise can contribute significantly to a better understanding of the relationship between laboratory results and actual field performance of the leaching process. Recommendations are made for bench-scale metallurgical testing to be complemented by geochemical and geotechnical laboratory evaluations, to ensure more successful heap leach projects. IntroductionHeap leaching is a simple, low-cost method of recovering metals from low grade ores which has now come into widespread application particularly for gold and silver metals in the United States.The heap leach process involves percolating a lixiviant (leaching agent) solution through broken or crushed ore (Chamberlain and Pojar, 1984). In the case of gold a dilute sodium cyanide solution is used and crushed ore is ""heaped"" on specially prepared impervious pads.The potential for use of heaping leaching methods for northwestern Ontario gold deposits was discussed by Beard (1983), who suggested that the use of this extraction technique in Canada should grow significantly for low grade ores as well as for small high grade deposits which cannot justify the installation of a new mill or the use of remote custom milling facilities. Two other potential situations for lise of a heap leaching extraction method are : as a low capital cost cash generator in the opening phase of a larger new project, and as a low cost output augmenter to complement a milling operation."
