Shore Gold Inc. (Shore) is presently designing a diamond processing plant for the Star and the Orion South kimberlite deposits in the Fort à la Corne area kimberlite field in central Saskatchewan. The first step in the plant is diamond liberation and occurs in the comminution section. Diamond liberation is the process of breaking up the kimberlite rock, as ?gently? as possible since essential to the diamond liberation process is the minimization of diamond damage, particularly for the larger, high value diamonds. The Southern African diamond mines traditionally use Jaw and Gyratory crushers as their primary comminution method. However, these diamond mines generally process the harder, competent kimberlite that is located in the diatreme zone as well as the root zone of the volcanic pipe. Softer kimberlite is typically located in and around the crater area of a volcanic pipe and it is this source of kimberlite that makes up the majority of kimberlite for both the Star and Orion South deposits. These softer kimberlites can be readily broken up using abrasion and attrition imparted by AG mills, this being the preferred method of comminution for minimizing diamond damage.

"The major importance of liners in grinding is their role in providing an appropriate trajectory for the charge. Since it is not possible to study the charge movement by direct observation in operating industrial mills, this task is accomplished by physical (laboratory), and/or, mathematical (software) methods. Because of the high cost and a longer time required for a physical analysis, mathematical simulations have become more common. Simulation of the effect of liner shape on the charge movement has provided a means to select a proper design based on the operational objectives and conditions. Furthermore, the liner shape changes due to wear and impact during operation, which will influence the charge trajectory. This adds more of an incentive to use simulation. These changes in liner could be predicted through liner profile measurements during operation and/or simulation. In this research, an inhouse developed DEM software called KMPCDEM © was used to simulate the charge movement in industrial plant SAG mills. A geometrical method of implementing the shell liners on SAG mills at the Sarcheshmeh (9.75×4.87 m) and the Gole-E-Ghohar (9×2.05 m) operations facilitated the software simulation. Point by point implementation of the measurements of liner profiles of these mills enabled the study to trend the change in the charge movement as the liners wear. Comparison of the simulation to a laboratory mill (1 m diameter) showed that the difference between the measured and predicted charge impact point, shoulder angle and toe angle were 6, 4 and 3°, respectively.INTRODUCTIONComminution is the most energy intensive operation constituting the major portion of operating and capital costs of a mineral processing plant. In the last decade, a vast number of research was aimed at studying various aspects of grinding with the aim of performance improvements (Davis, 1919; Mishra & Rajamani, 1990; kalala, Breetzke, & Moys, 2008). Mill liners transfer the input power to the charge and play a significant role in affecting the motion of the charge (Mclvor, 1983; Mishra & Rajamani, 1990; Radziszewski, 1997; Van Nierop, Glover, Hinde, & Moys, 2001; kalala et al., 2008). Lifters are usually used with mill liners to extend their life and to enhance the grinding and impact breakage efficiency. Mill lifters are used to raise the grinding media and ore to transfer the energy from the mill to the load (Rezaeizadeh, Fooladi, Powell, & Weerasekara, 2010)."

Molecular models of complexes of poorly studied bismuth, gold, and arsenic mineral clusters and reagents were created for use in collector activity forecasting using Chem Bio 3D and ChemOffice2005, with optimization by MM2. The density functional theory approach was used to determine HOMO, LUMO, SOMO, and total energies, atomic charges, and s, p, d- populations for various compounds. The structure-based virtual screening (SBVS) and docking technique was proposed to reduce the vast number of compounds to a more manageable number for selection of potential flotation candidates. The prognosis of collector activity evaluation (PCAE) strategy was proposed as a consistent approach to estimate the interaction between a collector and a mineral cluster as the difference between the total energy and sum of cluster energy and collector energy to search the analogue of butyl xanthate. The negative relationship between PCAE and flotability was shown. The combinations of dialkylamino sulfhydryl collectors can be considered as prospective reagents for gold-bearing sulfide ore flotation. These results were confirmed by experimental data in ore flotation. The increase in recovery of gold and bismuth with the aid of a combination of reagents has been established and additional cyanidation of tailings has been avoided.

This paper was prepared as a brief for Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) to guide input at a series of round tables carried out by the Federal Government in response to the 38th Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade (SCFAIT) report, on ?Mining in Developing Countries and Corporate Social Responsibility?. This document mandate is to provide background information, analysis and recommendations on the practice of Canadian exploration and mining companies abroad. This research was based on 11 case studies of Canadian companies which have experienced conflicts or controversies overseas. All case studies were assembled through an extensive literature review of publicly available documentation and communications with representatives of the mining companies to assist in deepening the insights into the drivers of the conflicts and the needs of Canadian companies in similar situations. The case studies include both exploration and mining operations. Our analysis begins with the identification of general and case specific drivers of conflict/controversy in each case study. Company names are kept confidential and only anonymous results are presented. We make ample use of simple flow charts and schematic diagrams to explain how contextual drivers and aggravators and company drivers and mitigators play varied and interrelated roles in conflicts. The diagrams also illustrate the cumulative analysis of drivers including the linkages among drivers/aggravators/mitigators across different domains (social, governance, NGO/media and company). Finally, we discuss needs of companies and propose recommendations for addressing social responsibility and human rights concerns.

The characteristics of coal bumps are analyzed based on the microseismic data from No.8935 workface in Xinzhouyao coal mine, Datong Mining Group. The geology of this workface is characterized by the thick sandstone roof and coal seam, both with relative higher stiffness and strength. In order to investigate the mechanism and precursors of coal bumps occurred in No.8935 workface, the locations of microseismic, the relationship of microseismic energy and frequency and the spectrum of microseismic signals are analyzed. The result shows that the coal bumps in No.8935 workface were mainly induced by the seismic caused by roof failure. The coal pillar near the goaf is more easily to bump. The statistics results indicate that the coal bumps were mainly occurred in the gate road near the pillar, less than 50m ahead of mining face and located in the hard roof adjacent with coal seam. Moreover, the frequency, energy, b-value and frequency spectrogram of microseismic events were found to decrease before coal bumps. It was found that the frequencies of the microseismic events before coal bumps mainly concentrate upon 5~60Hz. The sudden decreasing of frequency and increasing of amplitude of microseismic events can be regarded as a precursor of coal bumps.

This paper summarizes semi-analytical and closed-form solutions that can be used to assess the poroelastic stress changes induced within a porous formation (reservoir) during a pore pressure change. Further, solutions are presented for the stress discontinuities at the interfaces between reservoirs and the rocks that surround them. When used in combination with rock failure criteria, these solutions enable relatively simple analyses of the potential for induced fracturing or fault reactivation within a reservoir or the rock immediately adjacent to it. The latter, in particular, is useful for assessing if the hydraulic integrity of the surrounding rock (i.e., the bounding seal) will be affected by a pore pressure change. The use of the approach presented in this paper is illustrated with an analysis of a pinnacle reef with dimensions and properties representative of reefs in the Zama oil field, northwestern Alberta, Canada. Scenarios of pore pressure decrease (during historical production operations) and pore pressure increase (during several years of acid gas injection operations) are analyzed, for three different idealizations of reservoir properties and geometry (two plane strain and one axisymmetric). These results suggest that that the potential for induced fracturing is not significant at any point within the reservoir or the surrounding rock for both the production and injection scenarios that were simulated. Similarly, fault reactivation was not predicted for the reservoir or any of the points that were analyzed in the surrounding rock. However, fault orientations having the greatest potential for reactivating during historical production operations were identified; thus, illustrating a means of using geomechanical models to focus geological characterization efforts on the features that are most critical to acid gas containment.

Abstract -Estimating ore reserves for vein type deposits is a two-stage procedure: first, calculate the geometry of the vein system, and second, estimate the grades within this system. The grade estimation can only be consistently performed if the vein geometry - its size, shape and orientation - has been correctly characterized. Getting the size and shape of the different veins right means that the ore tonnages will not be artificially inflated, e.g., by falsely classifying host rock as veins. Similarly, correctly estimating their orientation and location helps mine management decide on the appropriate mining technique, selective or not. When applying geostatistics to estimate the vein geometry all available information needs to be used and not just the standard lithologic indicator of being or not being in a vein.

INTRODUCTION This symposium at Cu 2019 has been organised to honour and celebrate the career and achievements of Dr Phillip John Mackey, an internationally recognised expert in the production of non-ferrous metals, especially copper and nickel smelting and refining. Phillip was born in Epping, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 19 April 1941 and is one of 4 children of Gilbert and Philomena (nee Bartlett) Mackey. After completing Primary School in Epping, he attended Marist Brothers High School in Eastwood, Sydney and graduated in 1957 as the Dux of the School. Phillip’s father, being on the staff of the Sydney Technical College, in Ultimo, Sydney had the opportunity in the early 1950s to meet the late Professor Sir Rupert Myers, Foundation Professor of the School of Metallurgy at the New South Wales University of Technology (later called the University of New South Wales or UNSW). Gilbert Mackey was impressed by the new young Professor of Metallurgy and encouraged his son to study metallurgy - at the time an expanding industry in post-war Australia. EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES Phillip commenced at UNSW in 1958, graduating with honours in 1963. His undergraduate education and training included a few years of part-time study while working at British Motor Corporation on sheet metal forming of car bodies. At University Phillip developed his talent for teamwork. He was a contributing writer to the University newspaper, Secretary of the UNSW Students’ Union and was active in the UNSW Metallurgical Society and co-editor in 1963 of “Metallurgical Review,” the annual journal of the UNSW Metallurgical Society. His diverse interests and curiosity about the world around him were likely nourished while at University. Upon completing his Bachelor’s degree, Phillip was awarded a Commonwealth of Australia Postgraduate Research Scholarship. He began his PhD in 1964 on the thesis topic “Studies in Heat Transfer between Dispersed Liquid Metals and Gaseous Atmospheres” working under the supervision of then Associate Professor Noel Warner, an outstanding Professor at the University. Professor Warner is now an Emeritus Professor at the University of Birmingham and is internationally respected for his pioneering theoretical and practical work on established and innovative smelting processes.

"Abstract -Vanadium mineralization occurs in oxide-rich horizons within the layered gabbro zones of the upper parts of the Bell River Complex, Matagami, Québec and the Lac Doré Complex, Chibougamau, Québec. The vanadium-rich horizons are well defined on the ground and in aeromagnetic surveys by their high magnetic susceptibility; consequently, magnetic susceptibility can be an indicator of vanadium mineralization. The main oxide minerals are ilmenite and titanian magnetite, containing 20% to 70% of volume and the ratio of titanian magnetite to ilmenite is relatively constant, ranging from about 1:1 to 2:1. Their sizes are less than 5 µm to greater than 1 mm to 2 mm, occurring as coarse- to medium-grained subhedral crystals intergrown with cumulate silicate minerals (plagioclase, pyroxene, etc.). Electron microprobe analyses indicate that the ilmenite grains are mineralogically and compositionally homogeneous and have low V contents (average 0.18% equivalent V2O5). In contrast, the titanian magnetite grains are inhomogeneous, consisting of trellisworks of ilmenite lamellae in Ti-poor, V-rich magnetite [less than 2 wt% TiO2, and 1.41% equiv. V2O5 (1.16% V2O3) for 20 analyses]. Thus, the magnetite is the principal ore mineral of vanadium; it hosts vanadium in the form of V3+, not V5+, as is commonly and erroneously reported. We have also devised a flowchart for the beneficiation of vanadium-titanium ores. Sommaire - La minéralisation de vanadium se trouve dans des horizons riches en minéraux oxydés de la partie supérieure des zones de gabbros lités des Complexes de la Rivière Bell, Matagami, Québec et du Lac Doré, Chibougamau, Québec. Des horizons riches en vanadium ont été bien définis sur le terrain et dans les levés aéromagnétiques par leur susceptibilité magnétique élevée; conséquemment, la susceptibilité magnétique est l’indicateur directe du contenu en vanadium. Les principaux minéraux oxydés sont l’ilménite et la magnétite titanifère, contenant 20% à 70% du volume et le rapport de magnétite titanifère à ilménite est relativement constant, allant d’environ 1:1 à 2:1. Leur dimension varie de 5 µm à plus grande que 1 mm à 2 mm, apparaissant sous forme de cristaux subidiomorphes, de grains grossiers à médiums, intercroissant avec la gangue silicatée (plagioclase, pyroxène, etc.) de la texture de cumulat. Les analyses à la microsonde électronique montrent que les grains d’ilménite sont minéralogiquement et chimiquement homogènes avec un faible contenu en V (moyenne 0.18% équiv. V2O5 ). Contrairement, les grains de magnétite titanifère sont hétérogènes, contenant des lamelles d’ilménite en "trellisworks"; ces grains sont pauvres en Ti et riches en V pour la portion magnétite de la magnétite titanifère [surtout contenant moins de 2 wt. % TiO2, et en moyenne 1.41% équiv. (1.16% V2O3) pour 20 analyses]. Ainsi, la magnétite est le principal minerai de vanadium; elle renferme du vanadium sous forme de V3+ et non de V5+, tel qu’il a été communément et à tort rapporté. "Ore reserves at Brunswick Mining and Smelting totalled 101(106) tonnes grading 97 grams tonne-1 silver at the end of 1981. Silver is recovered as a byproduct in the copper, lead and bulk concentrates and is lost to the zinc concentrate and plant tailings. Recovery of silver for the year 1981 was 58,5%. The loss of potential revenue is in excess of Cdn $50(106) year-1 at current silver prices and milling rates.Silver is known to occur in solid solution in galena and as tetrshedrite. Evidence indicating the identity and significance of a third silverbearing mineral assemblage is reviewed and the distribution of silver losses is detailed. Characteristics of each the carrier which may be responsible for observed distribution, including size, surface quality, liberation and composition are considered, and the third carrier is shown to have possible implications for improved silver recovery by other Canadian producers as well as by Brunswick Mining.Silver tetrahedrite tailings distributed tailings and losses occur as coarse, free and as very fine unliberated galena in losses of the third carrier are between the zinc concentrate and are concentrated in the finest size fractions. Process alternatives for enhanced silver recovery by physical and chemical means are reviewed."

"Effects of Fe, Cu and Mg minor alloying elements on creep properties of 8xxx aluminum conductor alloys were investigated by conducting compressive creep tests at 100 ºC under a constant load of 69 MPa. The microstructural evolution was studied using an optical microscope and electron backscatter diffraction technique. The creep properties were characterized by the primary creep strain in the first stage and the minimum creep rate in the second stage of creep deformation. Results showed that additions of all three minor alloying elements (Fe, Cu and Mg) demonstrated a beneficial effect on the creep resistance but individual alloying elements exhibited different impacts on creep properties. The additions of Fe and Mg showed a strong impact on both the primary creep strain and minimum creep rate, while the Cu addition displayed a favorable effect on the primary creep strain but no impact on the minimum creep rate. Microstructure observation revealed that with increasing Fe contents, the volume fraction of fine intermetallic dispersoids gradually increased while the subgrain size and misorientation angle became smaller, providing strong barriers to the dislocation and grain boundary movements. The addition of Cu moderately reduced the subgrain size and misorientation angle and in combination of solid solution strengthening it promoted the retardation of the creep deformation during the primary stage.INTRODUCTIONThe 8xxx aluminum conductor alloys offer significant advantages such as low density, high conductivity to weight ratio and low price over copper conductors and become an attractive candidate in electrical engineering and building wiring (McQueen, Chia, & Starke, 1986; Birol, 2009; Engler, Laptyeva, & Wang, 2013). The mass resistivity of aluminum conductors is one-half of copper conductors. Thus, only one-half the weight of aluminum is required for equivalent capacities. Therefore, this unique property coupled with a relatively low price of aluminum offers significant economic advantage to develop aluminum conductor alloys for electrical applications in the electrical wire industry."

The electrocatalytic behaviour of gold in aqueous media is surprisingly complex and a novel view of gold electrode surfaces is proposed to explain the observed electrochemical responses. The metal surface is considered as a chemically (or redox) modified electrode, with equilibrated, low energy, surface gold atoms functioning as a relatively inert support and low coverage, high energy, protruding gold atoms (or minute clusters of same) functioning as electrocatalytic redox mediators. The protruding atoms are viewed as surface active sites and the complex electrocatalytic behaviour is attributed to the basic instability of the mediators, the diversity (and poor control) of same, and the acid/base (or hydrolysis) behaviour of the oxidized states of the mediators. It is assumed that major advances in the application of gold in the heterogeneous catalysis of gas phase reactions will be accompanied by similar advances in the use of gold in the electrocatalysis area; however, this will require considerable work of both a practical and theoretical nature.

The D bolt is not only able to accommodate large rock deformations, but can also provide a load-bearing capacity as high as that of rebar bolts. "The factors constraining productivity in the mining of narrow vein ore deposits are numerous and often interdependent. This paper concerns mining techniques capable of reducing some of these constraints in the case of vein deposits whose dip is less than 45 degrees. Modifications of conventional mining methods as well as suggested new developments are presented, as are matters pertaining to the mechanization of operations as a mean of increasing both productivity and work safety. IntroductionThe mining of vein deposits, whose width (thickness) is generally less than 2 metres and whose dip is often variable, calls for the use of varying stoping procedures as well as appropriate infrastructure and equipment. In the case of intermediate dips (15 degrees to 45 degrees), it is generally conceded that the degree of mechanization is limited and that ore removal via gravity is impossible. This paper proposes certain innovations in matters of equipment use and stoping methods, together with certain technical data pertaining to the application of these new procedures Stoping MethodsTo mine vein deposits, one must choose a method that can adapt to irregular ore limits and allow, as well, for good ore recovery with as little dilution as possible. In addition, it is important to minimize development work in waste rock. In principle, one selects a method that is both safe and profitable; this method will be defined mainly by the nature of the vein deposit and its dip, by the competency of the rock formations and by certain technical considerations. Moreover, the stoping procedure in a given deposit may well change with time as a function of new layouts or new equipment."

A study was undertaken to determine whether interrelations between mineral grains affect ore breakage during grinding, and to establish a correlation between ore breakage and mineral liberation. A base metal ore from the Brunswick No. 12 deposit in New Brunswick was ground for different periods of time in a laboratory ball mill, and both the unbroken ore and the ground products were analysed by image analysis. The results show that the mode of breakage is strongly influenced by the behaviour of pyrite. Similar size distributions were obtained for material from the 15 minute grind in a laboratory ball mill, for the grinding circuit discharge from a commercial mill, and for pyrite grains in the unbroken ore. This similarity indicates that a 15 minute grind breaks poorly bonded pyrite grains along grain boundaries, and represents the limit of easy breakage for the ore. Such a grind liberates both large separate grains of ore minerals and poorly bonded mineral grains that occur in interstices among pyrite. On the other hand the 15 minute grind does not separate moderately bonded mineral grains nor release moderately bonded interstitial minerals from pyrite; a 45 minute grind in a laboratory ball mill is required. It is assumed that, for Brunswick No. 12 ore, a 45 minute grind in a laboratory ball mill is equivalent to regrinding in a commercial mill. Grinding beyond 45 minutes in a laboratory ball mill breaks the ore by fracturing pyrite across grain boundaries and by chipping grain edges. Such intense grinding does not markedly increase sphalerite liberation from Brunswick No. 12 ore, because most of the sphalerite that can be released was liberated at the 45 minute grind. In contrast the intense grinding increases galena liberation because a significant proportion of the galena occurs as minute inclusions in pyrite. These findings show that ore breakage and coincident liberation depend upon size distributions, intergrowths, and mode of occurrence of the minerals in an ore.

This study presents a method for upgrading the information extracted from the measurements given by the sensors of a pilot grinding circuit. For that purpose raw signals are combined to process models for extracting, through filters, the best information on the process state. Two different filters are used; one is based on steady-state mass balance constraints and the other one uses dynamic mass balance equations allowing for material accumulation in the equipment. The filters are designed and tuned with the help of a grinding circuit dynamic simulator and are then implemented in the pilot plant. Their performances and usefulness are discussed.

"Due to the European Directive 2000/53/EC on end-of-life-vehicles, from 2015 on more than 95% of car materials have to be recycled. In order to recycle the materials back into the economic cycle, it is necessary to produce products with high quality and purity.Plastic components in cars, which are coated with metals by vapour deposition or electroplating, have a wide circulation (e.g., as cladding panel or trim strip for interiors and exteriors). In the end-of-lifevehicle recycling process, these plastic-metal composites are not considered in usual technologies (car shredder) and are not separated from Automotive Shredder Residue. These parts can be separated by optical or HF-detection sorting and then introduced to a specific treatment.Experiments with a specially developed bioleaching configuration showed that the thin coatings, which consist mainly of copper, nickel and chromium, can be removed efficiently from the polymer base materials by a bioleaching solution with Acidothiobacillus ferrooxidans as a leaching agent. The solution used was produced in special fermenters with a 9K-nutrient salt media. During the bioleaching process at 35°C maximum temperature, most of the copper is dissolved and the other metals accumulate as metal sludge. The bacterial cultures based on A. ferrooxidans are robust and resilient.After a 48-hour bioleaching period while the composites were stirred regularly with ventilation, the plastic particles were completely free from metallic coatings. The metal components are separated for further use: undissolved components (mainly Ni and Cr) are separated by decantation of the solution; dissolved copper recovey is carried out by cementation of copper. The cementated solid contains ~98% Cu, along with small amounts of other metals.With the bioleaching process, good separation and re-utilization of the metallic coatings is possible. The cleaned plastic parts were prepared by compounding for new applications with injectionmoulding."

Consulting engineers are well aware of large variations in plant operating cultures between countries, companies, and even within sites and operating crews. These operating cultures must be considered when designing Advanced Process Control (APC) applications in order to maximize utilization rates and return on investment. Designs must be driven by an understanding of the totality of unit operations. Economic factors, equipment constraints, management philosophy, maintenance department responsiveness, instrumentation reliability, operating crew skills and teamwork, and individual operator concerns are all important and must be considered during application design. A general approach to incorporating operating culture considerations into APC application design is described. A case study for an iron ore concentrator plant is presented.
