The effect of deposition defects in metal nitride coatings on erosion behavior is presented. AlCrN, AlTiSiN, TiSiN and TiSiN:MoS2 coatings were fabricated by reactive cathodic arc evaporation and unbalanced magnetron sputtering processes. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and nanoindentation, and the erosion property was assessed by solid particle impingement testing. The erosion characteristics on the coating surface and cross section were analyzed and correlated to the defects, which played an important role by promoting formation of erosion pits.

"Nanisivik Mines Ltd. operates a 10-M W diesel-electric generating plant at its zinc-lead operation on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. This paper provides a description of the plant and the integrated waste heat recovery system. Data is presented detailing the actual costs of operating a plant over a period of seven years. Problems in operation are described as well as the success of the plant in meeting its objectives over the years. IntroductionNanisivik is located on the shore of Strathcona Sound at the north end of Baffin Island (Fig. I). Nanisivik Mines Ltd. has operated a 2,100 tonne per day zinc-lead underground mine and a concentrator, together with supporting infrastructure, at this location since October 1976. Annual production of 100 000 tonnes of zinc and 10 000 tonnes of lead concentrate is transported by ship to Europe during the mid -July to mid October shipping season.All electrical needs of the project are provided by the company-owned and -operated power plant. Facilities served by this electrical system are the underground mining areas, the concentrator and industrial area, a townsite, airport, and shiploading dock complex."

"For the last three decades, the application of network planning has provided a basis for a formal and general approach to the discipline of project management. For fixed activity duration, a very simple algorithm commonly known as critical path method (CPM), gives the length of time required for the total project as well as indicates the activities which are vital to the completion of a project. Project Evaluation Review Techniques (PER T) on the other hand, generalize the above approach to recognize uncertainty in the activity durations by allowing them to be random variables. One of the misleading aspects of current "" PER T"" solution method is, however, the implication that there is a unique critical path. In general, any number of paths could be critical, depending on the particular realization of the random activity durations that actually occur. In this case, simulation can be utilized to estimate completion time of a project.In this paper, the concept of criticality indexing is discussed, and a simulation model application which defines the critical path based on the criticality indexing concept, to a longwall development - extraction network, is presented. The model also provides suitable scheduling of resources based on the resource constraints and smooth s out period-t o-period assignments. IntroductionThe successful management of large-scale projects require careful planning, scheduling , and coordinating numerous interrelated activities. To aid in these task s, formal procedures based on the networks and network techniques (variously called PERT or CPM) were developed. In its original form the completion time for individual activities of a project was assumed fixed and known in advance: this in turn led to the familiar algorithms for computing the critical path, earliest start time, slack, and so forth. The unreality of such an assumption is, of course , apparent in many contexts. Consequently, attempts were made to introduce probalistic activity completion times, allowing representation of the stochastic nature of most projects."

"Poor fragmentation, high toe areas, excessive shovel wear and tear and frequent re-drilling and blasting of certain tough waste rock zones in the Lomex pit in the early 1980snecessitateda better understanding of these zones.A combination of geotechnical mapping, penetration rate data, toe elevation contouring and observations on shovel and drill performance were used to determine the character and extent of these zones. This complementary information was brought together by the geotechnical mapper and the explosives supervisor.Distinct zones with particular geological characteristics were determined. A classification system with three types of blast and dig-ability was developed for the Lomex pit and later applied to the Valley pit, with considerable success. The three blast zone types are called ""poor"", ""f air"", and ""good"". This system will be described in detail.The explosives supervisor adjusted the blasting parameters to each zone, in particular, pattern spacing and burden. The resulting powder factors showed considerable variation between the poor, fair and good zones within each pit as well as between the two pits. Pattern geometry and length of collar were also adjusted to improve fragmentation. Cost savings resulted from less re-drilling and less wear and tear on drills and shovels in the poor zones and more efficient use of explosives in all the zones. An annual estimated cost savings of well in excess of $1,000,000 is realized at Highland Valley Copper. A by-product of the mapping was the determination of unstable structures and water flowing zones. Blasting was then adapted to this information for enhanced slope stability."

"This paper presents the results of an investigation into the level of radon, as against the natural background, at the Vicary Creek coal mine in Alberta. The concentrations of radon and daughter products detected in the mine were considered to be insignificantly higher than the concentrations of naturally occurring radon and thus do not constitute a health hazard to the miners.INTRODUCTIONTHE HIGH INCIDENCE OF LUNG CANCER among miners exposed to radon was established some thirty years ago. The presence of this gas in mines is primarily associated with pitchblende extraction operations, al-though coal contains detectab`e quantities of U30s. A previous study bas shown that coal from southwestern Alberta (Exshaw and Banff) contains lower than average concentrations of this element (1).As part of a general investigation into the occupational health environment of coal miners in Alberta, field measurements were made to establish the level of radon and to investigate the natural background radiation in the Vicary Creek coal mine, located some 16 miles north of Coleman, Alberta, on the easternmost slopes of the Rocky Mountains."

ABSTRACTThis paper describes the main testing procedures that should be carried out to evaluate the capacity and capability of the service brakes on the large-size diesel-electric trucks now in common use at open-pit mining operations. Brake testing programs in general are described, and then consideration is given to different techniques of service brake testing, brake performance evaluation, braking energy and typical performance characteristics.IntroductionThe first diesel-electric truck with a capacity of about 85 tons was introduced in 1963 by Unit Rig and Equipment Company of Tulsa in cooperation with General Electric Company, who successfully developed and supplied the most important component- motorized wheels. Since then, its popularity and numbers have continued to grow, and now more than 3700 such units are in operation in mines around the world. In Canada alone, their number is more than 700, including about 150 in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Similarly, their size has also grown from that initial capacity of 85 tons to 350 tons.Although the introduction of the electric trucks proved to be invariably economical, their indiscriminate use was not without severe consequences. Many runaways and even fatalities occurred when the dynamic retarder failed while the truck was travelling loaded down severe grades. The service brakes in such cases proved incapable of stopping runaway trucks, mainly due to their limited capability and the fading caused by excessive heat produced during the act of braking itself. This eventually led the various governments, the open-pit operators and the manufacturers to seriously question the braking capability as well as function of both service brakes and dynamic retarders. WE recently received from Professor A. C. Lane, Emeritus Professor of Geology and Mineralogy, Tufts College, Mass., and a Corresponding Member of this Institute, a very interesting account of some recent developments in radioactive methods of determining the age of minerals and, therefore, of the rocks in which they occur. It deals in particular with studies of the minerals of certain pegmatite dykes on the Huron claims and Bear claims in southeastern Manitoba, which, the results indicate, are among the oldest rocks of the earth's crust. The following article presents a non-mathematical summary of Professor Lane's paper . . It will be noted that he is anxious to obtain suitable samples of certain minerals and rocks for further age studies. We hope some o our members may be able to supply him with the material he needs. It may be well to explain briefly how the age determinations are made. Uranium is continually breaking down, or disintegrating in successive steps through radium, etc., to a final product which is lead (uranium-lead), and the rate at which this change takes place is known. Minerals containing uranium will therefore contain lead also, and the lead-uranium ratio mul-tiplied by a certain factor (approximately 7 ,600) will give the age of the mineral in millions of years. Thorium also disintegrates at a known rate to give lead (thorium-lead) as a final product, and the age of a mineral containing thorium can thus be calculated from the lead-thorium ratio. Thorium breaks down more slowly than uranium. In unit time, one gram of thorium produces about as much lead as 0.36 grams of uranium.-ED.

"The Regal Silver mine is 5 miles north-northwest of Albert canyon; a station on the main line of the Canadian Pacific railway; 21 miles east of Revelstoke; British Columbia.Development, commenced in 1918, comprises more than 8,000 feet of workings from six adits, one of which extends into the Regal Silver property from the adjacent Snowflake ground. Production has been limited to a little tungsten concentrate recovered recently from a few r..undred tons of ore treated in a small underground mill. The property has received some attention as a possible source of tin. The deposits are large quartz veins containing irregular sulphide bodies. Ore minerals normally make up less than 1 per cent of the veins and include pyrite, galena, sphalerite, scheelite, and stannite. The veins are approximately parallel with the bedding of the enclosing graphitic, siliceous to calcareous, slates and argillites. These strata are of Precambrian age, strike about northwest, and dip northeast. No other rocks are known in the vicinity of the workings . Granitic rocks, intrusive into t'he sediments, outcrop 4 miles to the southwest and 7 miles to the northeast and may underlie the property at no great depth."

Ontario leads Canada in production of structural materials and ranks third in production of non-metallic minerals. The total value of industrial mineral production in 1997 was $1.6 billion. The province is the leading producer of nepheline syenite, salt, talc, clay products, cement, lime, sand and gravel, stone and a major producer of gypsum and silica. Barite, sulphur in smelter gas, elemental sulphur, tremolite, serpentine, gemstones and peat are also produced. Table 1 shows recent actual industrial mineral production levels in Ontario. Other industrial minerals, including phosphate, petalite, diamonds, wollastonite, vermiculite, kyanite, garnet, graphite, silica, kaolin, dimension stone and anorthosite, have been the target of exploration and development projects. Investment opportunities exist at all levels from grass-root prospect through to production level.

Copper mineralization occurs at several places along the shore of Notre Dame bay, Newfoundland, and at one time formed the basis of a considerable mining industry. The sources of the mineralizing solutions and the structural settings of some of the deposits have not been clearly understood. This paper reports new investigations into the origin and structure of the deposits between Bett's cove and Stocking harbour, in a strip about ten miles long and two miles wide along the western shore of Notre Dame bay. The most complete previous descriptions of the area are those of Snelgrove (1929, 1931, 1938), Douglas, Williams and Rove (1940), and the writer (1947). The discovery of the Bett's Cove deposits took place about 1860, soon after the discovery of the well-known Tilt Cove deposits to the north. Several other small prospects were found between Bett's cove and Stocking harbour between 1880 and 1910. At Bett's cove, active mining began in 1875 and a small smelting plant was built near the mine in 1877. .Mining operations came to an abrupt halt in 1883 after a major cave-in. In 1900, and again in 1906, attempts were made to drain the old workings and reopen the mine but were abandoned long before completion. Total production amounted to about 130,000 tons of hand-picked copper ore which averaged about ten per cent copper, and 2,450 tons of pyrite (Snelgrove, 1938, pp. 52-55).

"Mining is a major energy intensive industry that contributes in consuming about 7% of the total world’s energy in which almost half in comminution. The underlying trait that drives energy consumption upwards appears to be somewhat persistent due to increasing in population, demands and growth rate. High grade resources have been/being depleted; consequently, low grade, high competent and complex ores with complicated geological structure are brought into perspective. For efficient extraction of values from such resources comprehensive multistage mining and processing strategies must be taken into account. Different treatment technologies, including ore sorting, must be considered to improve resource efficiency and productivity while taking into account the reduction in energy and water consumptions and related sustainability issues.The implementation of sorting technology in mining industry has a long past and its impacts on improving the overall efficiency of both mining and milling have been proven. However, the lack of complete understanding of its potential combined with ore complexity and low capacity of sorting machines have prevented the large scale application in mining industry. The application of X-Ray transmission sorting at Mittersill Tungsten Mine in Austria is presented and discussed herein. A technoeconomic analysis of the technology has revealed a significant potential of adding value to the concentration process. The rough feasibility study has given a strong feed-back on profitability and short time payback of about 2 years for the investment. Except the economic benefits the technology has positive environmental impacts. The potential for saving energy and water is large. The rough calculations have revealed that the energy saving can be up of 840MWh/annum. Furthermore, the ongoing cooperation between Mittersill mine and the sorting manufacturer is a good example on how the development of more competitive products, and product offerings, can be made."

Abstract - The Lupin mine, located in the central Slave province just east of the western boundary of Nunavut Territory, is a world-class example of a Neoarchean-aged banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted lode-gold deposit. At the minesite the gold-mineralized Lupin BIF, separating stratigraphically underlying psammitic wacke and overlying argillaceous turbidite sequences, delineates the Lupin dome, a hammerhead-shaped F2/F3 interference fold structure occurring at the greenschist to amphibolite facies metamorphic transition within the thermal aureole of the Contwoyto batholith. Detailed paragenetic relationships indicate that peak thermal metamorphism coincided with the switch from regional D2 compression to rapid D3 unroofing of the Neoarchean orogenic infrastructure. Gold initially precipitated with pyrrhotite, replacing amphibolitic BIF at the apex of the Lupin deformation zone, separating the east and west lobes of the Contwoyto batholith. Over the course of associated prograde/retrograde metasomatic overprints, gold was further remobilized during garnet and loellingite/arsenopyrite growth in chlorite-altered selvages of late-forming ladder quartz veins. A metamorphic model of ore genesis, with gold being scavenged and transported by metamorphic fluid that was shed and structurally trapped at the amphibolite recrystallization front, is favored over the previously proposed syngenetic and exogenic models of gold concentration that have tended to polarize genetic interpretations to date.

The HydroFloat TM is an innovative fluidized-bed separator that can substantially increase the upper particle size that can be successfully treated by flotation. Recent studies conducted using laboratory, bench-scale and pilot-scale equipment indicate that this technology can be used to float coarse sulfide middlings that cannot be recovered by conventional flotation machines. Recent data collected from pilotscale tests conducted at a base metal concentrator indicate that this technology can float middlings particles as large as 850 microns in diameter containing as little as 1% exposed hydrophobic mineral. As such, the crossover of this technology into the base metals industry has the potential to substantially reduce grinding costs and increase concentrator recovery/capacity through the use of split-feed circuitry. The split-feed concept, which is often used for upgrading industrial minerals, involves segregation of the feed into more than one size class followed by subsequent upgrading using mills/separators/reagents specifically optimized for each size class. In this article, a split-feed circuit is described that utilizes two stages of classifying cyclones in conjunction with the HydroFloat_ separator. The circuit is designed to recover, recycle and regrind coarse middlings containing small amounts of valuable mineral while simultaneously rejecting coarse well-liberated siliceous gangue so that mill throughput can be increased. Simulation data conducted using well-known process models suggest that this approach can increase existing primary mill capacity by up to 25% with only modest investments in new classifying and flotation equipment.

Professor H.E.T. Haultain: Table 4, on page 131 of this paper, gives the assays of sized mill products. I am sure that there are many others besides myself who would be very interested to learn how the sizes 0-3 and 3-13 microns were obtained. * * * Mr. Del Davis, Mill Superintendent, Flin Flon Concentrator, on behalf of the authors of the paper, has kindly sent us the following information in reply to Professor Haultain's enquiry. Sub-Sieve Sizing by Sedimentation Procedure (As used by R. J. Digney & J. E. Ryan, 1940) Fractionation of Sub-Sieve Sizes General Method: A 1,050-gram sample of the material was pulped to 3 liters; 10 c.c. of sodium silicate and 0.2 grams of Na2C03 was added and thorough agitation given for two hours previous to settling. The material was assumed to consist wholly of particles of the same density as the most abundant particles. The time required for a particle of the upper limit of the lowest size-range to be separated, to fall a specified distance was calculated according to Stokes Law. The pulp was poured into the settling apparatus and, when the calculated time had elapsed, the suspended material was drained. The settled sediments and the process repeated until no more suspended material was obtained. The next larger size fraction was obtained in a similar manner, using the settled sediments which had been stripped of all smaller sizes as above. The fractions were arbitrarily set at 0-3, 3-13, 13-23, 23-33, and 33-43 microns (43 microns = 325 mesh).

"In July 2004 workers at the ABI Smelter in Bécancour (Quebec, Canada) went on strike. Contingency plan were ready to face the situation and plan was done to operate one potline out of three. Two lines were stopped; keeping in mind the restart on cold metal after the strike was over. The subject to be presented and shared includes a summary of work organization including training, schedule of restart, pot cleaning, pot preparation, crash start method, follow up after crash start, safety and environment. This major project has been a very big challenge. It shows that people involvement is a must and the key success. It is then true to say : ""People who believe in success will work and act in order to get there"" and ""People who don't believe in success will act in such a way to fail"" Then both will prove they were right to think their own way ! Sharing such experience can be interesting because it's a true story and people like true stories."

The spatial coincidence of the seven anomalies is obvious, even though the self-potential is offset northward. Because the ratio, as an indicator of conductivity, is a relative estimate at best, concise interpretation is limited in almost every instance to the location of a conductor or conductor axis. When related to the initial phase of an exploration program, magnitudes and ratios similar to those obtained from any one of the methods described, would be sufficiently attractive to warrant further investigation. The compilation shown is an empirical comparison of actual field results and no emphasis has intentionally been placed on the relative merits of one method in respect to another. Too many additional factors, i.e., size, depth and conductivity of overburden, etc., that cannot unequivocally be answered, enter into such a comparison before a relative evaluation can be made.

Specification and Tests of Rope Wire Chemical Analysis: The range in composition of steel used in the manufacture of wire rope is as follows: Carbon 0 4 to 0.9 per cent Manganese 0 4 to 0.8 Sulphur Not above 0.04 Phosphorus Not above 0.04 The carbon and manganese content are varied according to the gauge of wire to be drawn and the tensile strength required. Generally speaking, best results are obtained from heats where the melt is not of too large a tonnage. The amount of reduction and patenting of the wire is left to the wire maker, who thus has a free hand in meeting the balance of the specification.
