A method is proposed for the determination of antimony in ores. Antimony is volatilized as antimony iodide by heating with ammonium iodide at a controlled temperature.The fusion mixture is extracted with hydrochloric acid and the antimony content is measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry using an air/ acetylene flame. The time taken for analysis when comparedwith existing fusion and separation procedures is considerably reduced. Cations and anions likely to be present in antimony ores were also studied for possible interference effects but were not found to interfere.

The Osborne copper-gold deposit was discovered in North-West Queensland in 1989. Underground production activities commenced at Osborne deposit in April 1996. This paper will examine technical and operational aspects of the underground mine during its development to a 1.2 Mtpa operation . Technical aspects discussed include geology, mine design and mining methods, equipment fleet selection and capital infrastructure. Operational aspects discussed include the evolution and performance of the integrated work teams that are utilised at Osborne to perform all mining and maintenance activities.

Resource rent taxes are taxes which only become effective at such a time as a pre-determined rate of return has been achieved by an operation. Resource Rent Taxes have from time to time been considered for implementation in both Australia and New Zealand. The offshore petroleum industry in Australia is already subject to RRT as is the Roxby Downs (Olympic Dam) Mine in South Australia. Both the mining and petroleum taxation regimes in Papua New Guinea include a resource rent tax component called Additional Profits Tax.

The equipment and procedures used for green pellet production on a laboratory scale are given, together with a description of the straight grate pellet strand analogue which has been developed to examine the response of various ore types to heat hardening. The capabilities of the analogue are illustrated with data obtained from the balling and drying studies using a manganese ore. Differences in inter-batch pellet quality are discussed, and method of minimising the experimental error that can arise from these differences is Presented.

The CSA Mine is located at Cobar, New South Wales, where it was in continuous operation from 1966 to the time it went into receivership on 29 January 1998. When it closed it was under the ownership of Golden Shamrock. Glencore International, in conjunction with Mt Lyell Mining, undertook a due diligence study to determine the feasibility to re-open the mine. This envisaged operating CSA Mine as a low-cost, copper concentrate producer under the direction of Cobar Management Pty Ltd (CMPL). The new workforce would consist of contractor trades people in operating functions under the co-ordination of CMPL staff, both on the surface and underground. This was the key to establishing the new culture in the workforce. The orebodies at CSA Mine are steeply dipping with copper-lead-zinc mineralisation in zones of strong alterations in a fine-grained siltstone host sequence. The predominant economic minerals are chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. The major gauge minerals are pyrrhotite, pyrite, chlorite, sericite and quartz. Ore for the project is being developed and mined from two high grade copper lenses within the QTS North system. Chalcopyrite occurs in two forms. The first consists of coarse chalcopyrite grains in association with pyrrhotite or pyrite. The second form consists of chalcopyrite grains intergrown with pyrrhotite grains. This form of chalcopyrite is quite rare. It allows electrochemical interactions between grains, resulting in rapid oxidation of the chalcopyrite surface. Physically this ore looks like, and has been mistaken for æpeacock oreÆ, ie bornite, but is infact oxidised chalcopyrite.

One of the key objectives in production from any mine is the minimisation of ore loss and dilution. This can only be achieved when the distribution of ore within the mine is known. The distribution of ore is usually evaluated from a combination of drill hole information and underground mapping data. Three-dimensional models of the ore distribution are then constructed by interpolating grades, contact locations and confirming these estimates through mapping. While the interpolation procedure can incorporate an understanding of the local geological conditions, it is an approximation and thus susceptible to some degree of ore loss or dilution. Naturally, such problems increase in areas of sparse geologic information or greater geologic complexity. Borehole radar offers an approach to decrease the interpolative aspects of modelling by providing a continuous image of some ore contacts. Borehole radar works by building a two-dimensional image of an ore contact from radio waves bounced off the contact from closely spaced positions along a borehole. This image can be imported into Datamine (or a similar design package) and incorporated into geological models of a given ore block. The results of a trial survey from the Mariners nickel mine at Kambalda are presented to illustrate the improved level of detail and accuracy that can be achieved through the incorporation of borehole radar into orebody delineation practice. Once implemented on a large-scale this technique has the potential to greatly increase the cost-effectiveness of long hole stoping at Kambalda, through increased ore recovery and reduced dilution.

Two industrial case studies in which detailed investigation of the flow behaviour of mineral slurries is used to assess the feasibility of pipeline solid transport are described. The first example deals with the pumping of highly concentrated bauxite tailings to disposal, while the second exam- ple examines the possibility of transporting high-density Victorian brown coal slurries which previously has been thought as uneconomical. It is demonstrated that these typical solid handling problems can be solved by a good understanding of the rheology of suspensions.

Information is a key ingredient for successful mineral exploration and development. Whether identifying potential exploration localities from a map, interpreting technical reports or searching a register for operators past and present, the common aim is a parcel of information from which the enquirer can make a decision. Traditional information gathering often requires days or weeks of manual research, studying maps, files, reports etc, before consolidating the results into an investment proposal. In recent times, such methods have largely been replaced by Information Technology, making the process much faster, easier and more centralised. However, notwithstanding some very successful technology implementations, the general rush to computerise everything in sight has left many organisations struggling to cope with the management of large volumes of diverse information. Information management is now recognised as the most important factor in determining the success of information technology implementation. The Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy (DME) has established a detailed information management strategy to underpin the rapid advance of computer technology within the organisation. A broad base of timely and reliable information is gradually becoming more accessible. It is envisaged that the availability of combined spatial, textual and scientific information will provide a sound basis for decision-making within the Department and the mining industry at large. Although information held by DME will be available at all times (24 hours on-line), its security and confidentiality will be guaranteed. The production of the DME system is aimed at satisfying the corporate objective to facilitate and promote mineral exploration and development. This paper outlines some current developments in the system.

The underlying principles of dewatering theory have recently achieved considerable practical application in the washing and dewatering of alumina trihydrate in Bayer plants. In particular, the influence on residual cake moisture contents of trace amounts of surfactant added to the wash water reveals that significant energy savings can be achieved. The influence of organic compounds produced by the caustic extraction of bauxite in the Bayer process is shown to be significant. These humic species reduce the cake permeability and the effectiveness of certain surfactants in dewatering operations.

Properties of the soil profile fundamentally control water-limited ecosystems. Soil water availability affects vegetation dynamics of plant communities, but is also affected by these communities in return. Understanding this eco-hydrological interplay and the role of physical soil restoration is crucial for successful rehabilitation and management of post-mining landscapes in semi-arid areas. However, uncertainties exist in both the mathematical description of plant communities within ecological submodels and the predictability of future rainfall events. This study uses information gap decision theory combined with an ecohydrological system model to investigate how both uncertainties impact decision-making in the context of ecosystem rehabilitation. A range of management strategies are investigated to identify the optimal soil thickness for successful rehabilitation of native plant communities in Central Queensland. The results emphasise that thicker soils can counterbalance uncertainty in mathematical description of plant communities by increasing the simulated survival probability of plant communities. However, the influence of thicker soils on the robustness of plant communities against a change in future rainfall amount is rather marginal. By allocating an economic value for restoring a particular thickness of soil layer, these results can be used to evaluate the costs of ecosystem re-establishment with regard to two target measures - the survival probability of the plant community and their robustness against climate change.CITATION:Arnold, S, 2012. Ti-added ultra-low carbon (ULC) steel is produced by adding Al and Ti during the secondary refining process to deoxidise molten steel and to bind C and N which are detrimental to the deep drawing quality of the steel product. However, the production of Ti-added ULC steel faces challenges, including submerged entry nozzle clogging and surface defects on cold rolled coils. The troubles were often attributed to ‘Al-Ti complex inclusions’ in the molten steel. However, the evolution of oxide inclusions including their stability has been still unclear. In the present study, the evolution of these inclusions in Ti-added ULC steel was investigated by phase diagram measurement, CALPHAD thermodynamic modelling, high-temperature stability test for the oxides, and observation of transient behaviour of oxide inclusions in the steel. The phase diagram of the Al-Ti-O system was elucidated with an emphasis on oxygen potential, which significantly controls the stability of the oxides. CALPHAD thermodynamic models and a self-consistent database were developed. The transient behaviour of Al-Ti complex inclusions in Ti-added ULC steel was observed in situ using a confocal scanning laser microscope. This was additionally validated by the new thermodynamic model. The equilibrium phases of the oxide inclusions were investigated using a high-temperature resistance furnace, and were analysed using a secondary electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer, and electron back-scattered diffraction. By considering the morphology and crystal structure of these inclusions, the evolution of Al-Ti oxide inclusions was elucidated. Various behaviour of Al-Ti inclusions and their influence on steel cleanliness are discussed.

Some attempt to minimise the importance of the greenhouse phenomenon. They do so by observing that global temperatures are still within the range of recent variations and that it is still not possible to predict with any certainty what the precise consequences of greenhouse will be. Both observations are true though the conclusion is dangerous. Ice core samples from the Antarctic and Greenland have established the composition of the atmosphere and global temperature over almost the last 200,000 years. The profile of these twin variables shows that they have moved together; when the concentration of CO2 has been up, the temperature has been up and when the former has been down the temperature has also been down. Over almost 200,000 years the CO2 content has ranged between lows of 190 ppm and highs of 270ppm. In just 200 years of industrialisation the CO2 content of the atmosphere has increased to 350 ppm, 50% higher that the mean of the last 200,000 years and 30% higher than at the start of the industrial age. Carbon dioxide is now increasing at 0.5% p.a. Methane, about twenty times more effective than CO2 as a greenhouse gas has doubled in concentration in the last two centuries and is now increasing at about 1.1% p.a. Methane, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons together with a number of lesser gases will double the greenhouse effect due to in creased CO2 over the next 40-50 years.

In the future, Illawarra Coal, the primary metallurgical coal producer in the southern coal fields of New South Wales, will face many unique challenges not found in other coal or minerals production areas. To manage these challenges and determine the best strategy for the business, Illawarra Coal has adopted a systematic strategic planning process, which starts from the broadest possible options analysis and culminates in a ægo-forwardÆ operating case that individual mine sites use as the basis for short-term planning. This paper will discuss two major topics. Firstly an overview of the Illawarra Coal and BHP Billiton strategic planning processes. This will demonstrate the range of variables and inputs that are required for the planning process, and the system which is followed to evaluate different alternatives for the extraction of the resource. Secondly, having discussed the primary external and internal factors that must be accounted for in the planning process, and the main issues affecting the viability and likelihood of each alternative, the paper will discuss the particular challenges that Illawarra Coal will face in the coming decades. These challenges include: market and price uncertainty; managing impact on surface features, infrastructure and environment; community interaction; transport and logistics constraints; unknown mining environments; lack of geological knowledge; limited surface access for new mining domains; changing attitudes to longwall mining in the Illawarra; ageing workforce; and cost and overhead management. The paper intends to discuss how these issues impact the business currently and how they are incorporated into Life of Asset plans and overall corporate strategy for Illawarra Coal.

Accidents in open pit mining have a high cost in lost time of person- nel, damage to equipment and installations, and lost production. The realities of export competition require that Mine Management sig- nificantly reduce the costs associated with accidents and workplace ill-health. Newer management approaches are proving effective in reducing the Total Cost of Risk through a strucured Occupational Health and Safety Programme exhibiting the following features: ò Formal Company Policy ò Accountability for OH&S performance clearly designated to each level of management and supervision ò Effective utilisation of a Mine Occupational Health and Safety Co- Ordinator and a Mine Occupational Health and Safety Adviser ò Development of realistic OH&S Objectives ò Training of Management, Supervision and Workforce in Occupa- tional Health and Safety ò Development and adoption of Safe Work Practices and Procedures ò Effective employee selection procedures, control of Contractors ò Monitoring of the health of the workforce ò Collection, recording and distributing information on all Mine inci- dents, accidents, injuries and damage ò Ensuring that the Mine environment is healthy and safe ò Effective Emergency Procedures to deal with injury, fire, rescue and other situations of risk ò Controlling those Mine hazards which cannot be removed ò Adopting a high standard of Occupational Rehabilitation ò On-going visible Management participation in the programme to ensure that momentum is developed and maintained. This approach requires that Occupational Health and Safety be given equal status with product quality, maintenance of plant and output per- formance; its implementation is rewarded with improved morale and major cost reductions.

Comprehensive occupational health and safety legislation in Australia is comparatively recent. It follows the examples set in U.S.A. and U.K. a decade or more ago. In Western Australia the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act was proclaimed in April 1985. It still has a long way to go before it achieves all its objectives. The mining industry has developed a substantial body of health and safety regulations under the Mines Regulation Act. Considerable practical expertise in such matters already exists, much of it developed from hard won experience. As a result it would prefer not to become engulfed in the new legislation. It would prefer to build upon the cooperatively developed policies and workable practices in the field of occupational health and safety with which it is familiar. Associated Minerals Consolidated Ltd. is a leading mineral sands producer in Western Australia and has continuously developed its occupational health and safety policy and practices. Under the banner of "Resource Control", AMC seeks to provide a safe and healthy working environment at all times. This is being achieved through a strategy of a policy, a defined organisational structure and a detailed programme, which together comprise the "Resource Control System". Some of the activities and achievements of AMC in the field of occupational health and safety are compared with the objectives of contemporary legislation, and details of some of the specialised areas of the Resource Control Programme are discussed. The paper will also highlight and discuss impractical areas of potential legislation.

The purpose of this paper is to outline the equipment used for diamond drilling at Mount Isa, together with alterations and recent improvements therein. As the majority of the drilling is carried out with machines running at relatively high speeds using XRN blast hole bits, the paper is mainly devoted to this branch of drilling.Because diamond bit costs constitute the major expense, a considerable amount of research into bit design has been carried out, and in several instances, costs per foot have shown an appreciable decrease in spite of rising manufacturing costs and higher diamond prices. Equipment performance has at times been erratic due to delays in delivery and occasionally because of faulty parts, but in general the position has improved by keeping in close contact with the manufacturers.BLASTHOLE DRILLING MACHINESThe standard blasthole diamond drill is the 'E-500' two cylinder air powered model manufactured by Mineral Drillers Limited. Several of the older pattern JV41 are still in use, but are being retired as they wear out.. Machines are repaired in the underground diamond drill shop.The normal feed gears used when drilling in lead shales are 350 top gear and 450 low gear-actually 357 and 438 revolutions per inch of advance respectively. The 300 gear was commonly used several years ago, but it was found that bit footages could be increased without any appreciable drop in penetration rate by reducing to the 350 gear. The removal of sulfur from SO2 containing flue gas is improved by adsorbing SO2 into solution with manganese ions as catalyser, however, burnt lime slurry has to be added to modify solution pH and the CaSO3 by-product is of low economic value. In this paper a novel one step process for simultaneous manganese leaching-desulfurisation of flue gas is presented. An investigation of the effect of process parameters included flow rate and SO2 concentration in flue gas, adsorbing time, solution to solid mass ratio, leaching time, and their impact on the oxidation and removal of SO2 from flue gas. The catalysing mechanism of manganese ions on the oxidation and SO2 removal was demonstrated by calculation of the species originating from manganese ions and SO2 in the solution according to solution chemistry. SO2 removal in the adsorbing solution took place at pH 5 - 6, where manganese ions dominantly occurred as Mn2+, and the chain reactions for oxidation of SO2 starting from HSO3- were improved by the presence of Mn2+. SO2 bearing flue gas was effectively desulfurised by leaching rhodochrosite (MnCO3), with desulfurisation of the flue gas and modifying the solution pH being achieved simultaneously, and MnSO4 of high economic value recovered from the leachate. 85 per cent manganese leaching and over 70 per cent desulfurisation of the SO2-bearing flue gas were achieved with only one adsorption stage under optimum conditions.

Drilling has disclosed a sequence of Cainozoic sediments immediately to the west of the Ediacara mineral field containing little or no dolomitic debris in the lower and middle sections, but with gravel beds of dolomite derived from local rocks in the upper part. It is suggested that the lower and middle sequence of Cainozoic strata was deposited over the area of the Ediacara Range, and that this range was uplifted, probably as a horst block, during Quaternary times and was first exposed to subaerial erosion during the upper Pleistocene epoch.Lower Cambrian dolomites with associated stratiform lead mineralization, which formed the target of drilling on the western downthrown block of the Ediacara Fault, were eroded before deposition of Cainozoic sediments.Intense leaching of basal Cambrian dolomites around the periphery of the Ediacara Basin took place during Mesozoic and Tertiary times. This leaching process has resulted in enrichment of copper and lead mineralization in a thick marginal zone of residual clayey material overlain by dolomitic collapse breccia. These zones of leaching and enrichment were preserved under Cainozoic sediments which have subsequently been eroded. The Ediacara Fault appears to have been a major conduit for mineralizing fluids and is the main lineament of the Torrens Hinge Zone. Contemporaneous movements on this fault have controlled rates of depositionand thickness of sediments across the fault during Adelaidean and Cainozoic times. Though latest movements of this fault have been west block down, the predominant movement has been east block down with associated thickening of sediments to the east in the Adelaide Geosync1ine.

This paper provides a brief fundamental insight regarding the fabric media concept for liquor filtration. The subject matter will be of interest to metallurgists and engineers with professional responsibility for world class design of solid liquid separation processes and efficient lowest cost operation of existing mineral process plant. Avocet Mining commissioned the worldÆs first mineral liquor clarification process incorporating a fabric media liquor filter at their Lanut gold mine in Sulawesi, in 2004 with design consulting provided by the Australian company SLS Technology Pty Ltd. Development of the technology continues with applied research focused on selecting textile parameters to apply filtration to a wider range of particle and contaminant types, higher solids concentrations, and different process liquors. Liquor filtration with the Fabric Media technology offers an array of attractive benefits. For Avocet Mining, filtration of pregnant liquor directly from the heap leach pad has enabled removal of the sediment pond and sand filters from the traditional process flow sheet, thus providing significant cost and installation time savings. Avocet Mining has recently expressed confidence in the technology indicating selection preference of the technology for the expansion at Lanut and for a new project. The application design window for the Fabric Media concept is extremely flexible with the technology now successfully applied to many different liquor chemistries and application objectives around the world. Potential cost savings for solid liquid separation process plant, such as counter current decantation circuits, clarifier vessels and thickener tanks can be calculated from laboratory measurements or pilot plant demonstrations.
