New Zealand Steel Limited is nearing completion of the environmental reporting and planning procedures for its proposed fivefold expansion to steelmaking at Glenbrook, and supporting mining operations at Waikato North Head. A report on the proposal to transport concentrate from the mining operations to Glenbrook has also been prepared and is awaiting release. This paper draws from these events, and by discussing some of the problems encountered, gives some guidelines for the preparation of an Environmental Impact Report.

This paper will discuss specifically the performances of vibrating screens having circular motion with inclined decks and linear motion with horizontal or near horizontal decks and both related mainly to coal, metalliferous, and other granulated solids applications where screening and efficient classification is required. Some misconceptions have been applied in the past with regard to making a screen type selection using either circular throw or linear throw and therefore this paper will endeavour to clarify these misconceptions.

Block caving is the most economic underground methods for excavating massive orebodies, due to the high productivity and low production costs. The success of block caving operations depends on the fragmentation and draw control as large blocks decrease the equipment efficiency, inhibit the material flow and may lead to expensive secondary blasting. Even though ore handling system design, as well as overall economic results, both critically rely on secondary fragmentation, this parameter continues to be one of the least understood issues in the caving operations.This research focuses on the experimental study of secondary fragmentation, considering the impact of vertical pressures and material flow. Experiments using a load-haul-dump extraction system were conducted under laboratory conditions to quantify the influence of pressure and particle size on secondary fragmentation. Results demonstrate that increasing the vertical pressure (simulating deeper conditions) leads to higher fragmentation (smaller particle size) and greater fines generation during draw. The experimental results were applied to calibrate the developed mathematical model based on kinetic matrix. The acceptable accordance between the comminution model results and the reality showed that this method is convenient in predicting the secondary fragmentation in block caving.CITATION:Castro, R, Gómez, R, Casali, A and Hekmat, A, 2016. The installation of truck turntables at above-ground crushers has the potential to yield gains in efficiency and productivity by eliminating the need for the trucks to turn around and reverse up to the crusher to dump their loads. The benefits include savings in time, fuel consumption and tyre wear. In addition, having a smaller area near the crushers dedicated to manoeuvring the trucks can be a significant benefit at some sites. Safety is also enhanced using turntables.This paper describes a project with the Australian Turntable Company to develop software that generates near-optimal layouts for the paths taken by the trucks in the vicinity of the crushers when turntables are present or absent. The geometry of the paths is constrained by the turning radius of the trucks and by the boundary of the manoeuvring area. The software quantifies the benefit of installing turntables by generating a design for paths with turntables and comparing it with the layout in current or planned use by the mining company. Adaptive mineral processing has to rely on spatially predicted information on primary geometallurgical parameters, like phase composition, size and shape distributions of grains from various phases, portions of value elements in different grain types. Naively, one would predict these parameters geostatistically and select an optimal processing for the predicted structure. This is suboptimal, due to various kinds of non-linearities in the problem. First, some primary geometallurgical quantities themselves are measured in non-real scales, like compositional or stereologically distorted geometric information. Standard geostatistics has to be replaced by compositional and geometric geostatistics, involving complex transforms and restrictions. Further, only partial and uncertain information is available, introducing a stochastic character to the optimisation problem. Moreover, many response variables leading to costs, outcomes and eventual effects of later processing depend non-linearly on the primary geometallurgical parameters, which implies that the final monetary value is not estimated unbiasedly by kriging. Finally unbiased linear prediction (such as kriging) is not the best method of prediction for decision making. The conditional expectation of the monetary values is needed instead. The impact of these problems is explained in this paper, with simplified examples, and a first approach to a general solution is proposed. Fletcher Challenge Limited through its subsidiary Grampian Mining Co Ltd has carried out an ore evaluation of one of New Zealand's largest known deposits of ilmenite located at Barrytown on the west coast of the -South Island, New Zealand.The ilmenite is located in a beach sand environment which has previously been mined for gold. Two analytical techniques were developed to quantify the resource. Considerable difficulty was experienced in this phase of the evaluation due to the presence of major inclusions within the ilmenite grains. Wet and dry concentration circuits, utilizing spiral, wet magnet, high tension and plate electrostatic separators have been G47designed to produce ilmenite from the ore. Studies to utilize the titanium content of the Barrytown ilmenite have been made. Recent work has been directed towards a titanium dioxide pigment process.

Iron ore mining is a major source of export income for Australia. However with the decreasing reserves of high-grade, low-phosphorus hematite ore, there is mounting pressure to provide consistent mineralogical ore grade. Enhanced 3D characterisation and modelling are crucial to respond to these exigent requirements. To tackle this problem a revolutionary mine-based, imaging system (based on Visible Near Infrared û Short Wave Infrared reflectance spectroscopy û VNIR-SWIR) has been developed. This innovative, CSIRO-built prototype produces mineralogical maps that will have a major impact on ore grade characterisation. Australian iron ore companies will benefit immensely by pioneering this emerging and unique mining technology. The significance of VNIR-SWIR reflectance spectroscopy is well demonstrated with field portable spectrometers and airborne hyperspectral systems. At the mine-scale level, this newly developed imaging system will allow accurate and objective mineralogical mapping of mine faces and benches with very closely spaced sampling. These spectral mineral maps will improve deposit delineation and bring accurate and objective ore grade characterisation that will minimise drilling and enhance ore recovery. This will in turn lead to cost saving and better long-term block model planning. This system will also improve safety for mine geologists in providing mineralogical information at a distance, avoiding the need for any close contact with the mine face. The mine imaging concept is a logical response to the industry need for automatic and objective tools for sustainable and future mining practices.

The West Australian Government hold an annual ‘Mines Safety Roadshow’ around the State’s regions and the capital city, Perth. Each year presenters provide an update on legislation and safetyrelated themes. A recurring theme is the mining industry fatality rate. Professor Michael Quinlan’s ‘Ten Pathways to Death and Disaster’ (Quinlan, 2014) has been referenced regularly to assist in structuring workshops and conversations concerning fatality prevention in the mining industry. The ‘Ten Pathways’ are the outcome of an analysis of fatal injuries in the mining industry, which identified a series of common themes to the fatalities: Pathway 1: Design, engineering, technical and maintenance flaws. Pathway 2: Prior warnings or causes for alarm ignored. Pathway 3: Failures in risk assessment. Pathway 4: Failures in management systems and hazard management plans. Pathway 5: Failures in auditing. Pathway 6: Economic pressures compromising safety. Pathway 7: Failures in regulatory oversight and inspection. Pathway 8: Worker and others expressing concern prior to the incident. Pathway 9: Poor management – worker communication and trust. Pathway 10: Emergency and rescue resources and procedures. To determine a fatality risk profile we asked participants at the Mines Safety Roadshows to indicate their perception of their employer’s performance in each of the Ten Pathways. We administered the questionnaire at the Mines Safety Roadshows in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2023. In this paper, we report on the results of the questionnaires, and suggest how organisations can improve their fatality risk score.

Ausmelt has developed and commercialised high temperature reactor technology that has been applied to waste processing in the form of a catalytic waste converter (CWC). Ausmelt Technology uses a top submerged lance system within a versatile converter containing an oxidised molten siliceous slag. Metals and other valuable products can be extracted from wastes for recycle into the community. Non-valuable components such as toxic organochlorinated compounds are destroyed and prevented from reforming. The slag produced is inert and can be safely used in building and concreting. The CWC can be applied to practically all types of wastes and examples from Ni-Cd batteries to toxic wastes are discussed. Additional benefits can be derived from large-scale operations if the surplus heat generated is exploited to produce steam and electricity.

Sphalerite flotation without Cu activation in the presence of iron ions has been reported and studied as a function of pH, dissolved oxygen content and pulp potential with both single mineral and ore samples (Leroux, Rao and Finch, 1987; Xu et al, 1992; Zhang, Rao and Finch, 1992). The flotation was attributed to ferric hydroxy xanthate. As a prelude to surface analysis to try to identify the species responsible, bulk precipitates formed from iron salt and xanthate solutions under different conditions were obtained and analysed. Analysis techniques included ultraviolet spectroscopy,infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy. It is tentatively concluded that the bulk precipitates contain three ferric components, two hydroxy xanthates (Fe(OH)2X and Fe(OH)X2) and iron oxide (FeO.).

A brief test program was undertaken to assess the viability of air-sparged hydrocyclone beneficiation at the Cadjebut concentrator. Three different process streams were processed (lead rougher feed, lead scavenger tail and `mine water' solids) in a small scale ASH unit (one litre volume, feed rate 1000 to 1800 kg solids/hour). Analysis of the concentrates indicated that ASH based flotation was successful, selective and capable of achieving improvements to the overall metallurgical performance of the concentrator. The flow regime inside the device accentuates the selective flotation of the finest particle size ranges generally not recovered to any significant extent in conventional mechanical flotation devices. The testwork proved that the ASH is a viable alternative option for increasing the flotation capacity of the lead beneficiation stage of the Concentrator.

The physical properties of an orebody require determination for virtually all mining projects, new and existing. The extent and regularity of such determinations being subject to the size and homogeneity of the orebody. Such properties have an impact at the design stage of new plants, with respect to equipment specification, and thus effects capital costs; and also impacts on the operating costs of new and existing plants, with respect to power consumption, production levels and part replacements. All of these can severely alter the bottom line and can be the determining factor in the economic viability of many projects.This paper examines some of the most common properties that are measured, the procedures utilised in determining these properties, and their variability under conditions of reproducibility, and to a lesser extent repeatability.

Hydrodynamic conditions such as gas dispersion, mixing intensity and solids suspension are known to govern the metallurgical performance of the flotation process. Understanding flotation cell hydrodynamics is therefore important for the optimisation of existing cells and for the design of the larger and more efficient cells which are needed to handle the finer, lower grade ores currently being mined. This paper presents the results of numerous studies that have been carried out to characterise the hydrodynamic conditions in a number of different types of flotation machines both in Australia and South Africa. Measurement techniques that have been developed to determine gas dispersion and other hydrodynamic properties in industrial flotation cells are described along with applications for their use. The results show distinct differences between the way flotation cells are operated in the two countries.

It is possible to use compacted anodes formed at low pressure for the direct electrowinning of lead from sulphide concentrates. An anode containing 5.5 per cent graphite, formed into a compact at 34 MN m-2, enables lead to be won at a current efficiency of about 80 per cent; the power consumption .at 150 A m-2 current density being 0.4 kWh per kg lead. It would be necessary to use diaphragm cells to obtain a sufficiently pure product. A conceptual design for a full-scale plant is presented, together with a cost estimate for the production of lead by a process based on direct electrolysis of compacted concentrates. It is unlikely that the proposed process will be economically competitive with the conventional lead smelting.

Investigation of a water inflow into Wongawilli Mine in the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales included algal analysis. The determination of algae in the water suggested an external water source. An alternative hypothesis proposed that algae are inherent in a coal mine environment. Investigations to determine the validity of these hypotheses and provide information on the viability and longevity of algae under adverse conditions were conducted in the mine and the laboratory. Results indicated that a mine environment is not natural to algae and is not conducive to their growth. These findings support the hypothesis of introduction of surface water to the mine workings. They indicate that, in the absence of other available techniques, algae can be an effective tracer for use in the determination of a water source.

Portland cement is a finely ground mineral powder obtained by intergrinding a mixture of 95 parts of clinker and five parts of gypsum. It is the generic name for hydraulic cement a man made product which hardens in the presence of water. Today's cement started formally with a patent granted in 1824 to Joseph Aspdin, a Leeds bricklayer. He called his patented cement 'Portland' because it resembled a gray brown stone quarried on the Isle of Portland off the coast of England. The first cement to be made in the southern hemisphere is accredited to Nathaniel Wilson, a pioneer farmer who with his brother John began experimenting in 1874 with the limestone on their property near Warkworth. In 1884 they produced the first Portland Cement to be made in this part of the world.

Industrial relations on Australian and New Zealand resource projects can be volatile. Therefore investors have become increasingly aware over the years that sound industrial relations during construction is vital to the overall success of their project. There has been a wide range of actual industrial relations performance, project by project, and the degree. of success often directly correlates with the degree and thoroughness of pre-project planning. However, although many projects have been crippled by delays and cost overruns because of labour disputes, good results are achievable. Total commitment to the project by all parties involved is essential and it is up to the employers to seek out this commitment and not just trust mother luck. Industrial relations must be taken very seriously as the price of failure can render a resource project unviable.

Fifteen samples 'of clays and shales from the Adelaide area were selected from a total of 84 as representing material of possible value for the manufacture of light-weight aggregate. A detailed examination of the bloating. characteristics of these revealed four likely to be suitable. for expansion.' in a rotary kiln. One of these, a Tapley. Hill shale., was-fired in an 8 in. diameter rotary kiln, but con-tinuous bloating without ring formation in the kiln was not achieved. Steam,,-oxygen,, sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide have been, suggested. as the agents of bloating. An examina-tion of .. the evidence : `leads to the conclusion that carbon dioxide derived from. carbonate minerals is likely to be the principal bloating agent. Attempts to bloat clays by the addition of mica were.not successful.
