A low grade, refractory ore gold mine with high striping ratio such as at Macraes is always challenged in ways to improve margins. Common practice approaches used at OceanaGold Ltd Macraes are to maximise grade delivery, optimise recovery and reduce unit costs, as well as take any opportunities to incorporate new technologies and implement enhanced commercial strategies.   The Business Improvement (BI) programme was implemented across the Macraes operations in late 2003 and is being rolled-out to all other parts of the business. The core focus of BI at OGL is to: +        increase revenue, +        reduce cost, and +        improve processes.   A dedicated BI team comprising of a manager, team leaders and business analysts were engaged to identify and manage a series of opportunities to reduce operating expenses, optimise capital outlays and generate extra revenue. The Business Improvement Programme, though in its formative phase, has begun a cultural change within the organisation. Many people are starting to challenge the way they do things and are looking for ways to continually improve business performance.   The BI team encompasses individuals from different departments who can offer the diverse skill set necessary to produce intended results. The current team is made up of a BI manager, BI Team Leaders in Mining and Processing and analysts from Mining, Processing, Commercial and Plant Maintenance workgroups. A team member has recently been formally trained as a Six Sigma Black Belt. ] The BIÆs team role is to assist in the establishment of project management processes for each improvement idea. In addition the team will assist in tracking implementation, identifying and unblocking restrictions and limitations as well as setting up metrics to quantify the level of benefit returned and sustained.   From a more strategic point of view, the BI team is advancing the Business Improvement capability of the company by developing long term Communication and Training strategies. These strategies will set the direction of BI initiatives in the years to come to: +        educate the OGL workforce in basic BI techniques, +        assist the OGL workforce in applying basic BI techniques, +        communication the direction of BI in OGL, and +        close the information feedback loop to facilitate transparent communication between the OGL workforce and the BI team.

Western Deep Levels, a seismically active deep level told mine. stalled placing backfill in their narrow tabular workings as part of the regional support strategy in 1986. Over the years the percentage of working places being backfilled has been gradually increasing. At the end of 1995 the support efficiency and the labour productiveness relating to support installation were scrutinised to determine if resources were being optimised. Owing to financial, safety and productivity constraints it was decided to redesign stope support to be less labour intensive, safer and provide an integrated stope support system. This new integrated system will thus combine the previously used temporary, permanent and back area support consisting of mechanical props, hydraulic props and backfill respectively. Backfill previously formed an integral part of the regional support in conjunction with strike stabilising pillars. To design the integrated support system the backfill placement quality has to be exceptionally good and placement must be done as close as possible to the working face. The backfill to face distance was reduced by 30 per cent and in some areas by more than 50 per cent with an increase of square metres filled to increase the effect of the backfill even more. TSG Consulting works with many of the major global mining companies using simulation modelling as an integral component in their development teamÆs processes to determine which combination of infrastructure options, operating performance and operating rules best achieve project goals. All systems can be divided into a series of subprocesses. Conventional management and design practices focus on the optimisation of these system components. However, the interaction between subprocesses means that improvements made to the individual components do not necessarily translate into total system performance improvement.TSG Consulting advocates a ætotal integrated system approachÆ to understanding the behaviour and performance of complex interacting systems. In a constraint-based integrated set of processes, the instantaneous system capacity is limited by the subsystem component capacity that is the bottleneck at that point in time. Additionally, real world stochastic and dynamic influences tend to have knock-on effects across subsystem boundaries. This necessitates the requirement for simulation modelling to develop and validate solutions that are sufficiently robust to deliver sustainable outcomes. The key to maximising production is to understand the causes and effects the inherent variability has on component performance, subprocess performance and most importantly, the total integrated system performance. The correct use of simulation modelling techniques allows study teams to evaluate the relative merits of different capacity enhancement proposals. Put simply, when done well, simulation modelling provides a quantitative and rational process to enhance the knowledge and insight needed to make informed decisions.

Electronic detonators bring a fundamental and radical change to the potential of rockbreaking operations. The immense technical challenge of safely merging electronic systems with explosives has been largely overcome, but a surprisingly difficult obstacle has been to convert users to the much more capable electronic systems, in routine as opposed to exotic applications. Unit cost is probably the main point of resistance. For years papers have confirmed significant improvements in blasting results, feeding through to enhanced bottom line value for the whole operation: much reduced environmental impact, and improved control over fragmentation, muckpile shape and overbreak. In Africa, a number of operations have been employing the technology for sufficient time to see enduring improvements in throughput, control and cost structure, and these improvements have fed through to the planning process: both the cost and the benefits are part of the plan. This has essentially rendered very unattractive the option of reverting to pyrotechnic systems and incurring the penalties previously unseen but now understood to be avoidable. Examples given are of improved throughput at opencast and underground mines, and greatly extended life at an urban quarry. The general experience of management in implementing the technology is that it over-delivers: adopted to solve one particular problem, significant other issues are also addressed. These extra benefits were quite logical, but not at all obvious prior to implementation. Exploring this reality is essential for harvesting the benefits of the technology sooner rather than later.

Alliancing is a contractual relationship in which organisations with an interest in a project are brought together in an atmosphere of co-operation to produce superior results to benefit all of the participants. Fundamental to the concept is the management of the risks associated with the project. The traditional risk management strategy adopted by clients has been to transfer this risk to others in the belief that this will result in the lowest overall project cost. It is assumed that competition in the market place will allow these risks to be transferred without paying a premium. However, this approach often results in the development of an adversarial climate, a high level of litigation, time and cost overruns and an overall poor project outcome. Under an alliancing arrangement the parties (client, designer and contractor) are aligned through shared interests in the projectÆs success by linking profitability to performance. Under such an arrangement, an atmosphere is created whereby the participants are motivated to focus on cost-savings, pursue best value and to innovate. Successful alliancing can result in highly motivated project teams and realisation of extraordinary productivity and cost-savings flowing from increased efficiencies. The situations in which alliancing can be successful are discussed with particular reference to the Wandoo Alliance which successfully completed the $375 million Wandoo B offshore oil platform in record time and with considerable savings to the project budget.

Mine ventilation models are now an accepted component of most mine management systems. However, modern ventilation models also represent a highly structured spatial data source, defining underground pathways and connections across a mine. This creates opportunities to extend the use of network models beyond ventilation design, by using critical path algorithms to find pathways such as minimum distance or minimum time.This paper explores the use of ventilation network models to automatically analyse and calculate potential emergency escape routes. A variation of Dijkstra’s algorithm is used to predict complex pathways between any two points across a model, representing an escape route from an emergency area (such as a fire) to a safe location (such as the surface or a refuge station). Weighting can be assigned to paths to represent potential travel speed, obstructions or preferred routes. Finally, emergency considerations such as smoke or gas in some parts of the mine can then be incorporated into the pathways to force the algorithm to avoid dangerous routes and specify safer pathways. Gold mining cyanide-bearing solutions can pose a risk, cause significant wildlife deaths and adverse public relations and result in non-compliance with regulatory conditions. The International Cyanide Management Code for the Manufacture, Transport and Use of Cyanide in the Production of Gold (the Code) was developed as a voluntary code to encourage industry-wide improvements in managing cyanide responsibly. The Code requires design and implementation of robust monitoring programs for compliance under the following standards of practice: 4.1, 4.4 and 4.9. A robust monitoring regime can be complicated as each processing and tailing system is different. The following systems are commonly used in Australia: carbon-in-leach (CIL); carbon-in-pulp (CIP); heap leach process ponds; tailing waste disposal systems; peripheral discharge, central discharge and in-pit disposal. Some terrestrial wildlife can be denied access by fencing tailing storage facilities (TSFs) or other physical barriers, therefore limiting wildlife interaction with cyanide-bearing tailing and solutions to mainly birds and bats. While wildlife monitoring programs for processing and TSFs contain similar core attributes, it is necessary to adapt monitoring to take into account the site-specific features of each system. These core attributes are discussed in this paper, with reference made to cyanide concentration and associated methodologies. The issue is considerably complicated if tailing solutions are deemed or discovered to be toxic to wildlife. Essentially cyanides are required to be measured to gain an understanding of the concentrations to which wildlife may be exposed. This usually equates to measuring the cyanide concentration of solutions entering and leaving a tailing system. To assess the risk to wildlife presented by tailing and heap leach systems it is necessary to monitor both the hazard (cyanide concentrations) and the exposure (live wildlife species, presence and interaction). These tasks need not be arduous and a system of simple frequent monitoring has been developed and implemented for Code compliance. The wildlife monitoring developed by Donato Environmental Services (DES) and used at mining operations departs from the industry norm. It documents observer effort, live wildlife presence, habitat and behaviour in a tailing system, as well as deaths and carcasses. A greater understanding of wildlife cyanide toxicosis associated with this monitoring approach will enable mining companies to adopt a proactive approach to significantly reduce, or preferably eliminate, the impact on wildlife and assist in gaining Code compliance.

Industry has a very special request to make. Environmental issues must not be allowed to become a factor of competition so that nations or individual industries can gain economic advantages for themselves by encroaching unduly upon the environment. An international harmonisation of the demands imposed on specific industries and industrial plants where discharges are concerned is therefore essential. The same applies to any to any action contemplated against noxious products. An important step towards that goal is no doubt represented by the United Nations Conference on the Environment scheduled for 1972. Conclusions: Australia must recognise its responsibilities in an inter- national movement to control pollution. It must react on a national scale to a problem which is threatening our whole national environment. To gather, collate and coordinate the information needed to ensure policies which strike a balance between conservation and development, we must look towards the Commonwealth to coordinate the activities of its own instrumentalities and those State and independent bodies working in the area. Financial aid must be provided to stimulate research and later to ensure that environmental protection policies are observed. These policies will be founded on social economic theories which will be both practical and sound, The United Nations conference on the Environment is scheduled for 1972 and in this is the opportunity for international cooperation. Cooperation in the field of controlling legislation and the collection of much needed data. There is an imperative need to assemble facts for world use - an international know-how bank which acquires the most sophisticated technology of process design and waste purification. Arising out of this Conference, is it too much to expect that there could be established an international authority for environmental control, whose activities are governed on a multi-national basis? Such an organisation would have as its primary concern the collection and classification of official regulations, as well as the sheer collation of data to permit economic evaluation of the costs of conservation of the environment. There is an international scope with different factors involved, including industrial technology: in other words, the concrete measures taken against industrial pollutants ought to be more or less identical for similar industries irrespectives of the countries in which they operate. The assembling of an international common foundation of knowledge is imperative so as to acquire the most sophisticated technology of process design and waste purification available for all who are interested.

During recent years many investigators have suggested large spacing to burden ratios to improve the fragmentation obtained in blasting. In spite of these suggestions, most operators still use a conventional ratio of 1 to 2. From single hole longitudinal charge tests in laboratory, it is shown that burden controls the fragmentation. The burden for obtaining uniform fragmentation is smaller than the burden to obtain maximum breakage. Tests on two or three holes show that a larger spacing to burden ratio can be used for smaller burdens, but it is not possible for the larger burdens chosen to obtain maximum breakage. By using finite element analysis evidence is presented to show the effect of spacing and burden relationship on blasting results.

Results are presented which demonstrate the feasibility of employing electrolytic membrane technology to process leach liquors derived from alkaline pressure leaching of scheelite concentrates and to recover and recyle sodium carbonate. Thus the problem of disposal of sodium sulphate is avoided. In a further application of the technique sodium tungstate is converted to tungstic acid which can be further processed by three possible routes to crystalline or amorphous tungstic acid or tungsten powder. In each route sodium hydroxide is produced which on carbonation can be recycled as soda ash to the pressure leach stage. Further testwork is required to determine long term operational conditions in the membrane cell and to confirm the effect and deportment of impurities on products. The process has been patented.

Parallel lenticular orebodies occurring at the C.S.A. mine of Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd. are mined by mechanized cut and fill stoping over the full strike length. Access is provided for each stope lift from an inclined drive adjacent to the orebody. Mobile drill jumbos mounting hydraulically-operated booms are used for drilling upholes which are subsequently charged with ANFO explosive.Close control of drilling has been found essential for good back conditions and to ensure optimum fragmentation.Broken ore is transported from the face to the main ore pass by rubber-tyred, diesel-powered, load-haul-dump units. Initially, the units trammed ore to the main pass via the incline drive. As the stopes advanced and the lead distances increased, stope passes were developed in the wall rock and raised concurrently with each stoping lift. The passes terminate in drawpoints and production loaders are used to transport ore from the drawpoints to the main ore pass system.Two parallel ore pass systems have been developed to cater for both copper and copper-zinc ores. These systems terminate above a 48 in. by 60 in. jaw crusher. The crushed ore is conveyed to a traversing rock box and thence to one of two crushed ore bins adjacent to the main hoisting shaft. A loading station conveyor is interlocked with the winder to provide automatic ore hoisting.All phases of ore handling have been mechanized as completely as possible. Results to date indicate this policy has been vindicated but highlight the need for tight operating control and close liaison between operating and maintenance personnel.

Mine to mill optimisation is not a recently developed concept. It is one which is finally gaining greater acceptance in the Australian mining industry, possibly as a consequence of the downturn in markets and certainly made possible by the development of tools and techniques to measure and predict performance of mining equipment and milling plants. Fragment size after blasting has a major bearing on the performance of all aspects of mining and a major influence on the economics of the mine and mill. The process to optimise fragmentation consists of identifying the key factors, measuring their sensitivity through a modelling and trialing program and conducting economic evaluations on the changes on both the mine and mill. Management of the Ernest Henry copper-gold mine in Northern Queensland, Australia, has espoused the mine-to-mill concept and is actively pursuing excellence in blasting to drive down the total cost of mining. Ernest Henry has extremely hard, wet and heavily jointed geological conditions, and had high powder factors and a large percentage of oversize material reporting to the crusher or ROM stockpile. A blasting improvement program was undertaken between Ernest Henry Mining, Thiess Contractors and Orica Explosives to optimise the ore size distribution, particularly the oversize component, as a step to reducing production costs. Measures of success included bringing the rock breaker back from double shifts to part-time operation and increasing direct dumping into the crusher from 70 per cent to 92 per cent. Tools and technologies to predict and measure the performance of individual blasts are needed before it is possible to optimise fragmentation or the downstream processes. These include such specialised Orica Explosives tools as SABREX, POWERSIEVE, and POWERLINE and commercially available drill monitors. As important are the more common still and video camera, borehole loggers, measuring tapes, surveying equipment such as face profilers, and a high speed camera if possible. There are many tools which can be applied however it is rarely necessary or possible to use all of them due to time constraints and a point of diminishing returns. The critical point is knowing what the true parameters of the blast were compared to design -only then can the predictive tools be effectively utilised. Stage one of the program has seen gradual improvement as the understanding grew and practices have been implemented resulting in reduced bridging in the crusher, geological mapping with respective blast designs and the oversize component under control. This paper is about a process approach which links tools and technology to understand the fragmentation drivers and then to optimising the size distribution. Effective minesite water management requires that this issue be treated as a risk management exercise. The management process is generally far from simple and by necessity must involve a range of personnel covering a siteÆs commercial, operational and environmental interests and responsibilities. The challenge to be collectively faced by these stakeholders is to strike the correct balance between risk and cost. On the other hand, the challenge to be faced by technical services support personnel is to provide stakeholders with information in a format that they can use with confidence. This paper presents the application of continuous operational simulation (OPSIM) modelling techniques to establish appropriate risk profiles for minesite operations. It is necessary that the format of these risk profiles be generic and equally applicable for defining the risk of occurrence for a relatively comprehensive range of activities û eg from of a non-compliant discharge, to the risk of failure to meet production targets. What is more, the profiles need to be quantitatively based and capable of reflecting change in system response to varied operational or management strategies. The techniques presented in this paper are based around a key assumption that long-term records of the climate contain within them sets of sequences that are representative of what can be expected in the future û that is, the droughts, floods, cyclones, good years and bad, long or short, and everything in between. Therefore, if these historical records are run through an OPSIM model for a particular site, then the simulated operational characteristics can be taken as being representative of what can be expected in the future, in the long-term. This lends itself to statistical analysis and translation into the required risk based format. Water Solutions Pty Ltd have been working with Capricorn Coal Management to develop a relatively comprehensive OPSIM model of their operations at German Creek Mine, Central Queensland. Outcomes from the modelling have been used in recent times to provide mine management with risk-based guidelines for both securing and containing mine water inventories. One of the more interesting tasks has been to establish risk based inventory levels that, if reached, would trigger the immediate implementation of a contract for the desalination and re-use of mine water, at predefined rates. Also, lead-time warning of the occurrence of a possible trigger is of importance to operational and commercial planning. To service this requirement the OPSIM model is regularly used to produce lead-time estimates to defined levels of confidence. Case studies of these, and other, applications of the OPSIM model at German Creek Mine are presented in this paper and serve to demonstrate an effective methodology for practical risked based water management.

Nickel laterite approximately 40% of the remainder caning deposits. ores are the source of the world's nickel with from sulphide ore Although laterite ores are near the surface and cheap to mine they require significantly more energy to treat than sulphide ores. The escalation of oil prices comiencing in 1973 meant that nickel laterite refineries using oil as an energy source were placed at distinct disadvantage relative to sulphide refineries or those with coal derived energy. The Queensland Nickel refinery commenced a construction programme; in 1980 to allow ore drying and power generation to be converted from oil to coal. Since late 1981 ore drying has been undertaken using heated air from two moving grate spreader grate stokers. The changeover from oil to coal drying proceeded without process disruptions. This paper discusses the plant changes required to allow the receipt of coal and the operating performance obtained from the coal fired air heaters.

Drainage aids are designed to assist in filter cake dewatering by reduction of surface tension. By the early 1980's severalspecialist chemical manufacturers had developed drainage aids specific to the alumina industry. Thus, after some initial laboratory work, drainage aid addition to the product hydrate filter cake was first tried at Gove in early 1981. Encouraging results led to further plant trials and a laboratory trial comparing eight different products. Fromthis last trial a product was chosen and a plant trial run in March 1982. The results achieved encouraged a further plant trial to be run during April and May, 1982 and a decision was then made to adopt the full-time use of drainage aid on the plant.Optimisation work with the drum filters and drainage aid continued until late 1983. This work not only led to optimisation of dose rates, concentrations etc., but also to significant improvements in the mode of operation of the product filtration area.

Mineralogical information obtained from plant surveys is subject to errors, both due to sampling and experiment. To reduce these errors, and to ensure that information is consistent, a data reconciliation model has been developed for mineralogical data. Its capability includes mass balancing size data, total assays, assays within size-classes and liberation data. Unlike any other mass balance package, this package also allows reconciliation of the complex mineralogical information. For example, particles cannot simply be treated as binary, but consist of combinations of many minerals. Hence the distribution of mineralogical information is multidimensional and the mineralogical distributions are referred to as multiphase. In this paper, the different levels of mass balancing are explained, including how to mass balance liberation data. Furthermore a new technique based on probability theory can be used to infer distributions even when there is insufficient information to perform a mass balance, and this technique is also explained. Results for various stages are given.

According to our laws, ownership of land confers a number of definite rights: principally the right to use the land, the right to exclude others from its use, the right to transfer it and the right to receivF income from the property independent of use.
