Gunpowder Copper Ltd is using in-situ leaching to extract copper from the Mammoth sulphide ore deposit in north-west Queensland. To increase metal recovery, ore is fragmented using conventional underground longhole drilling and blasting techniques. Although the upper levels of the orebody had previously been mined by open cut and underground methods, significant reserves of copper existed around old workings. To safely and economically recover this resource, a decision was made to fire the remaining pillars in the upper part of the mine by a single 1.37 million tonne mass blast in February 1992.This paper records the planning, design, and implementation of the Mammoth mass blast. Geological and geotechnical aspects are summarised, to explain the reasons for such a large blast. Drilling, charging and blast initiation are discussed in detail, to show how standard equipment and products were applied to a unique task.

Discovered in 1896, the Sons of Gwalia orebody is located in a ductile mylonite zone within a sequence of Archaean pillow metabasalts and minor metasediments of greenschist facies which are variably sheared.The ore zone has good continuity, being 110 m wide and 500 m long, dipping 45 degrees east and plunging 70 degrees to the south to a depth of 1500 m downplunge. A strongly-developed foliation is present together with a prominent lineation paralleling the plunge. The mylonite zone consists of unmineralised chlorite schist and a 'U' shaped mineralised zone of chlorite-sericite schist with varying amounts of quartz-carbonate as veins parallel to foliation, boudins, and locally as massive quartz-carbonate. Pyrite is the dominant sulphide present.Grade control utilises RC holes on a 10 m x 10 m pattern, with infill blast rig holes 5 m deep where necessary.Some visual control of ore boundaries is present and, combined with good ore continuity and a knowledge of the structure of the orebody, enables cost-effective grade control to be achieved. To-date, over three million ounces of gold have been produced from the orebody.

This paper presents an economic study comparing two gold recovery processes, zinc precipitation (Merrill-Crowe) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). Capital, operating, and gold losses costs from an actual CIP plant study are compared to costs developed from a hypothetical Merrill-Crowe process flowsheet. ' Results indicate an overall economic advantage to CIP over Merrill-Crowe for plants processing slurries within the range of the five gold solution grades selected for this study.

British Coal has made a practical progressive approach to improving the reliability of its mining equipment. Reliability must be addressed at the specification stage but does not end there and routine procedures are used to procure equipment of adequate reliability. The techniques used to monitor and improve reliability during the operational phase of the equipment, providing engineers and operators with detailed printouts, together with the types of maintenance employed, ensure high levels of availability. Finally, the methods of repair and overhaul of British Coal equipment and systems ensure that the initial reliability targets outlined on the specification, can still be achieved.

The Government Mining Engineer of South Africa has decided to legislate that Self Contained Self Rescuers (S.C.S.R.) become a mandatory piece of equipment for all those persons proceeding underground. It is envisaged that: * employees in underground coal mines will be fully equipped with S.C.S.R.s during 1988; * those persons employed in gold mines during 1988/89; and * personnel in all other mines by the end of 1990. It is the intention of this paper to discuss the introduction of these auxiliary life support systems, and to give an update on current market developments.

A narrow (200-300m) zone of amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks underlies the Papuan ophiolite near the Musa-Kumusi divide, SW of Popondetta, Oro Province. The amphibolite rocks are bounded up-section, to the NE, by peridotite and gabbro of the ophiolite; and down-section, to the SW, by mafic greenschist, which in turn overlies blueschist facies mafic schists of the Emo Metamorphics.Amphibole compositions within the narrow contact zone show a strong chemical zonation which reflects a steep thermal gradient, with maximum temperatures >800¦C at the peridotite contact. SIROSMELT is a successful new pyrometallurgi- cal furnace system using a top-entry lance which can be submerged in both slag and matte. The lance is of simple construction, and is cooled by process air. Pilot plant work commenced in the CSIRO Division of Chemical Engineering in 1972 using a 50 kg batch reactor. This paper traces the development of the technology through various slag cleaning and smelting processes up to a scale of 5 tonnes per hour continuous feed. Strong co- operation between CSIRO and the Australian smelting industry has contributed greatly to the success of SIROSMELT.

The mine manager is one of the oldest jobs in the world. Over many centuries the fundamentals of how this job was approached did not change much. However since the later part of the 1980s there has been a dramatic shift in the expectations and role of the mine manager as the pressures of globalisation and consolidation have increased the size of companies and the production levels of mining operations. The changes have been dramatic, with demanding requirements on mine managers to continually improve the skill levels of people, to apply and develop rapidly changing technologies and to consider far broader business issues that need to be managed in a truly globally connected world. This paper will attempt to outline some of the issues, the complexity surrounding them and some of the approaches that have been made to manage them. There is not a single correct answer or approach, but there are many key success factors that have led to some amazing levels of performance being achieved as we go deeper, broader and literally move mountains to meet the customerÆs needs for today and tomorrow. This contrasts with many mining operations in developing countries that still have a traditional approach to how they mine. Society is the river of life that continually flows and changes the environment that surrounds it. The pressures from the customers and world growth, shape and force alterations to be made in an industry that has to live with the far greater primal and uncompromising forces of the earth we mine. This has led to some paradigm shifts in how we accept what we manage. TodayÆs mine manager must manage a far broader range of issues, than just how do we get tonnage out of the mine and product out of the ore. These include but are not limited to technical, commercial, product quality and end use understanding, employee and community issues, environmental and the ever increasing complexities of sustainable development. Organisations will have to look at how they structure their management of the business to manage functions to meet the complexity of different stakeholders needs û the business, the employees, the customer and the broader community within an environment that is becoming more attuned to the harm impacts to the world in which we operate. The attraction and retention of skilled people that contribute to the value and worth of the corporation, will become critical to sustain a companyÆs growth. One of the fundamental elements of successfully doing this will always be the skills of the mine manager and his/her extended team with the continued development and support that they will need to meet these demands.

With some notable exceptions, marine placers located just below, or just above, present sea level, are responsible for much of today's production of detrital ilmenite, rutile, zircon, and other minerals of value. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the paleogeographic and paleo-oceanographic factors which may have determined the location of presently submerged marine placers. These factors-include changes in sea level, burial by recent marine sediments, stream capture and other i changes in drainage patterns, and recent changes in climate. Selected geologic situations in the Yellow Sea off the coast of Korea, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal, in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska, and in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India, will be used to illustrate the author's point of view.

Laboratory leach tests of Nabarlek uranium ore carried out by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission to compare the effectiveness of Caro's Acid1 (permonosulphuric acid) as an alternative oxident to pyrolusite indicated reduced acid consumption in leaching and lime savings in neutralisation of tailings liquors when using Caro's Acid. Interox Chemicals Pty. Ltd. arranged a plant trial for Caro's Acid at Queensland Mines Nabarlek Plant. The trial confirmed that significant savings in acid and lime can be achieved under plant conditions. Plant operations also demonstrated improved redox potential control was possible using Caro's Acid.

Ore deposit models form the basis for numerous other economic decisions in the mining process. The success of these economic decisions therefore depend directly on the accuracy of the ore evaluation process. The Geology Department at the Sishen Iron Ore Mine is responsible for the generation of a reliable geological computer model of the rock material with predicted grades. This information is then utilised for further ore reserve calculations, mine planning, production scheduling and grade control. Owing to a very complex geological orebody, grades and beneficiation characteristics differ significantly from sample to sample. This means that ore evaluation is a difficult process and great reliance is placed on computer techniques. The brown coal resources of the Latrobe Valley, which include over thirty thousand million tons of coal suitable for open cutting, provide the main source of fuel for the power generation for the State of Victoria. They also provide the basis for the development of a supply of cheap hard fuel for industrial and domestic use, and for the development of the Lurgi process for manufacture of town gas for most of the State. The production of hard char for metallurgical processes and liquid hydro carbons will each, no doubt, play its part in the industrial growth that will be based on these resources.The State Electricity Commission of Victoria, which has been allocated the task of developing these deposits since the early 1920's, is faced with problems of economic selection of deposits for development, and excavation and transport of huge tonnages of coal and overburden-in this year, 19'59, about 12,000',000 tons of brown coal will be won, and over 7,000,000' cu. yd. of overburden will be removed in the four open cuts operated by the Commission; by 1967, eight years from now, the demand will have doubled.This paper deals with the nature and importance of various factors effecting the planning of the development of these resources. It is in essence an introduction to the papers by C. S. Gloe, H. C. G. Rodgers and J. M. Alexander, also being -presented at the Institute conference in Victoria in August, 1959.INTRODUCTIONIt is the intention in this paper to define the factors that come under consideration in the planning and development of the brown coal fields in the Latrobe Valley, whose exploitation by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria was initiated almost 40 years ago. It is proposed to enumerate, and in sorile cases evaluate, the physical and economic criteria that play their part in determining planning for the future.

In the first five years of longwall mining at Pacific Colliery, special techniques of goaf sealing, gas drainage, goaf edge ventilation and goaf sampling were developed and used to o crcome the concurrent problems of spontaneous combustion and high methane emissions. The English-inspired back-return face ventilation system was modified to suit Australian mining methods and was first used as part of a 'Y' ventilation system and more recently was used with a 'U' system of ventilation. In conjunction with this ventilation system, the maintenance of a sealed goaf area was an essential element in the control of the spontaneous combustion in the goaf.

The Jurassic Walloon Coal Measures crop out over much of the Moreton Basin and contain numerous thin, banded coal seams which have been mined at various locations since the 1870s. Historically most mining has been by underground methods. Increased exploration during the 1970s and 1980s has led to the delineation of significant open cut coal resources and to the development of the Oakleigh, Jeebropillly and Ebenezer open cut coal mines in the Rosewood-Walloon area. Over 2 170 million tonnes in-situ of shallow, high volatile bituminous coal with a mean maximum vitrinite reflectance of between 0.5 and 0.6 have been proven in the Basin.

In recently completed road tunnel projects in Queensland, such as the Airport Link and the Clem7 tunnels, there is a smoke duct running along the roof of the carriageways to extract smoke in case of fire. In New South Wales, no road tunnels have a smoke duct. In the Melbourne City Link tunnels, there is a small smoke duct running along the roof. All of the tunnels are safe as claimed by the designers and authorities. However, there is significant cost associated with providing a full size smoke duct compared with no smoke duct. This paper is going to present a comparison of the road tunnel safety with a smoke duct and those without one from a risk perspective. It further discusses the cost-effectiveness of such provisions and whether similar levels of safety could be achieved without a smoke duct.CITATION:Lau, R, 2014. Recent operating experience from West Australian open pit gold mines has shown that geotechnical input into initial design is rare. As a result, ground stability is poor - almost half the pits designed in this way suffer major failure.West Australian experience shows that geotechnical studies for individual mines are site specific, and therefore empirical experience cannot be transported from site to site. Geotechnical studies performed prior to design have resulted in significantly improved pit stability.

The Far Fanning gold deposit is situated 60 kilometres south-west of Townsville (Fig. 1). Previous recorded production is 3756 tonnes returning about 1600 ounces of gold. This has been taken from surface and shallow underground workings- scattered over the strike length of the deposit of 1700 metres. The main production period was from 1895 to 1908.Previous exploration involving extensive trenching and sampling has been: carried out intermittently. since the 1930's, by Gold Mines of Australia (1932), Placer (1974), Anaconda (1975), Marathon (1980-8-1), Aberfoyle (1981-82), and The Northern Queensland Company (NQC) (1983-present).In 1980 Marathon undertook an extensive drilling programme to test the oxidised mineralisation. Over 200 percussion holes and- 7 diamond holes were drilled along traverse lines spaced 29 to 103 metres apart covering a strike length of around 1800 metres.
