TowerMill - Advantages in Wet Grinding Applications The TowerMill, which has now been in existence for no less than 50 years, is one alternative to the horizontal ball mill and offers several advantages. The TowerMill is widely used in (coal-fired) electric power plants for the grinding of raw material for the FGD (Flue Gas Desulphurisation) process involving very high throughputs, very fine product sizes and high availability. Some companies in the mining industry also looked at the use of such optimised grinding machines several years ago and found that many of the advantages offered in other industries are transferable to new applications. Much development work has been undertaken to improve the TowerMill for new applications and, as part of that work, tests have also been conducted to make direct comparisons of their performance with that of ball mills. Grinding tests were performed using the same raw materials and comparable machine sizes. Some of the results are discussed in this paper, along with a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages. The conclusion provides an outlook for some worthwhile future applications. The test results, which are described and analysed, show that the TowerMill offers significant advantages in relation to operating costs and operational safety. An example based on the wet grinding of limestone is presented.

Your Excellency, on behalf of the Council of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and, indeed, on behalf of everyone present, I extend to you a welcome, and our thanks for your gracious acceptance of the invitation to be here to-day and, later on, to present Honorary Membership Certificates. I also welcome the several official representatives of our Allies, of Great Britain and our sister Dominions.To Messrs. E. C. Driffield and E. J. Rigby, two of the original Foundation Members, who are with us to-day, I extend greetings.The present occasion is opportune to express, on behalf of a representative body of professional men, deep appreciation of the sacrifice which His Majesty the King has made, and will continue to make, by appointing His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester as Governor General of Australia and, therefore, His Majesty's senior personal representative in this country.I suppose, that as the primary reason for our assembly to-day is to celebrate the Fiftieth Year of the Institute's existence, I should properly on this occasion, give an account of its history and development. However, as this subject was ably covered by Mr. L. V. Waterhouse, in his Presidential Address in 1938, I trust I may be excused for selecting some other subject. I shall, therefore, exercise my privilege as President and give you a short history of the Mining and Metallurgical Industry of this country with special reference to its effect on the development of the Commonwealth and on the national economy. I apologize in advance for any statistics which I inflict upon you; some of these will be three or four years out of date, because of censorship restrictions. I shall as far as possible refer firstly to the industry prior to and including 1893, the Institute's foundation year, and then to subsequent development.Australia, is pre-eminently a pastoral and agricultural country and it leads the world in the production of wool. Nevertheless, it has an international reputation as a producer of gold and various metals and of minetal products.The development of gold mining in the decade 1840-50 was an epoch-making event in Australia's history, because, to quote one writer's apt phrase, "it precipitated Australia into nationhood." It was certainly responsible for a rapid increase in population. Thus, during the period 1841-1861 the population of Australia increased fourfold, from 221,000 to 1,170,000.The effect of the discovery of gold in Western Australia was even more striking. This paper presents the near-field rock damage owing to production blasting in limestone quarry in the western region of Japan. The study's purpose is to learn the mechanism of crack development due to blast vibration. In this study, blast vibration's magnitude was expressed with peak particle velocity (PPV) which was obtained based on seismographs recorded database. In attempt to pursue a research's purpose of this study, there were two considerable interests: near-field blast vibration propagation and prediction, and crack observed and prediction. Furthermore, with regards to considerable interest of the study, there were three essential aspects which were challenged, such as: monitoring and interpretation of seismic wave propagation in a rock mass near large explosive charge of production blast scale, measurement of blast rock damage in adjacent to blasthole, and determine critical value of PPV which may produce significant rock damage. In order to determine precision critical PPV, understanding correlation between rock damage with vibration level is firstly important to be done. This paper also discusses how to measure, detect and quantify near-field blast vibration and blast rock damage in adjacent to blasthole.

Thesewere not however the only problems to be looked at. Asmentioned more fully later, other ore reserve situationswere known, or were met during the study, in copper,gold and nickel as well, where poor realization: expectationratios had ranged from embarrassing to disastrous.These made it clear that ore reserve estimation had to belooked at afresh.The fresh look has resulted in a broadening of theconcept of ore reserve estimation from its traditionalpurely computational basis to an approach embracingall the many things that can affect expectation andrealization as essential factors. Hence this guiderepresents a gathering together of what has been learnedand what should be known to all those concerned withore reserves in any of its diverse aspects.The study has been marked"by a number of changesof thinking. At first the aspects that appeared to requireattention were two; recognition that an ore reserve statementwas an estimate, not a precise calculation; and asearch for im improved estimation procedure adapted tolow grade ores with narrow economic margins. Threeyears later the view was that the need was to incorporateinto ore reserve estimation all relevant aspects of theproposed mining operation from choice of a samplingmethod to sales contract specifications.This study is thought to be unique in being frankabout weaknesses in ore reserve estimation and intreating failures not as natural disasters (like drought orflood, which have to be endured) but as potentiallyavoidable. It has led to three principal conclusions.

When the Mining Bill came before the Victorian Legislature not so many months ago, the question arose whether mining managers required education, and to what extent. Some members of the House expressed themselves in a way which appeared to leave the impression that mining managers would be all the better if they were not brought up in a scientific school.To try and prove what we owe to science I will give a short history of colonial mining from the earlier period to the present time and compare results.I believe I am right in saying that South Australia is the pioneer colony in mining and to her belongs the credit of not dnly being the first mining colony, but also that her beginning turned out so successful, as the history of the Burra Burra copper mine will testify. At about the same time a little galena mining was carried on nearer to Adelaide, but as this did not prove a success and was only worked by tributing parties, little notice was taken of it.

The recent renewal of interest in hydrometallurgical routes for copper production has been brought about by the possible future reliance on mixed ores and lower grade deposits, environmental aspects, and energy considerations.A number of hydrometallurgical processes for the recovery of copper have recently been proposed. Flowsheets are developed for two processes which incorporate several treatment methods being experimentally studied in Australia.In the first process a cupric chloride leach is followed by electrowinning whilst the second is based on the formation of cuprous ions, stabuized by acetonitrile and subsequent disproportionation to cupric ions and metallic copper. For the purpose of comparison, flowsheets were also developed for the Arbiter and Cymet processes.Process economics are estimated for the four processes and the results are discussed in relation to competitive pyrometallurgy. None of the four hydrometallurgical processes, with possible exception of the Cymet process, appears to be competitive with established large scale and newly developed pyrometallurgical processes for chalcopyrite.However, because the economics of the individual hydrometallurgical processes depend strongly on specific conditions, a "tailored" process may be competitive with pyrometallurgy in particular circumstances.

The 1981 Review: In the late 1970s there was an upsurge of interest in the prospecting and mining of this countryÆs mineral resources. That upsurge of interest was accompanied by a mounting public concern over the damage mining operations might do to the environment. Concern was also expressed about what some people perceived as inadequacies in the legislation which regulates mining and the grant of mining privileges, and inconsistencies in the relationship of that legislation to other legislation regulating land use and the use of resources.

The Corridor ore body is so named because it occurs in an east-west zone or corridor of schist bounded on the north by the siliceous conglomerates of Mount Lyell, and on the south by similar conglomerates of the Tharsis ridge (Fig. 1). It was discovered after the geophysical prospecting methods described below had defined a target zone for diamond drilling.Since the proving of copper mineralisation by drilling, the corridor orebody has served the vital function of a convenient known target body for the orientation of more recently developed geophysical methods. Traversing of the orebody by these new methods has provided experience for the evaluation of anomalies elsewhere.Some of the methods applied had not been used in Australia before, and were introduced to the west coast of Tasmania through the undertaking there of modern regional exploration programmes. The authors feel that the information gained could be of assistance to others engaged in geophysical prospecting.HISTORY OF DISCOVERYProspecting in the Mount Lyell district has been more or less continuous since 1881. The first geological report was published by Thureau (1886).In 1934, Blazey and Douglas (1934-38) commenced geophysical surveys at Mt. Failure of rock materials is a process of crack propagation. Crack initiation takes place when the crack tip stress intensity K reaches a critical value called fracture toughness, K1C. The rock fracture toughness is known to be affected by the surrounding environment such as temperature, confining pressure and humidity. In order to examine the effect of humidity, a series of semi-circular bend tests were performed under various water vapour pressures in a rock material that is known to be anisotropic. Water vapour promotes stress corrosion of rock and therefore the fracture toughness was found to have a decreasing trend with increasing water vapour pressure. The rate of decreasing the fracture toughness depends on the microcrack density that promotes the migration of water vapour into the rock. Also in an anisotropic rock, the fracture toughness depends on the direction of crack in relation to the anisotropy of the rock material.

The Martha epithermal Au-Ag deposit contains multiple generations of quartz veins with a range of textures. We examined: +        vein textures, +        crosscutting vein relationships, and +        the paragenetic sequence within the pit walls as well as a wide range of hand specimens. Samples include host rock, breccia, and veins, but these groups are not distinct; instead, they form a continuum.   Veins at Martha mine show a wide range of textures on a local scale; these textures also change significantly over both the lateral and vertical extent of the pit. Common textures include crustiform bands, comb quartz, colloform bands, platy quartz, massive quartz, drusy quartz, sedimentary textures and brecciation.   Vein grades relate to textures. Many textures, including crustiform, platy, cherty, and sedimentary textures display predominantly low grades, but some textures are linked with high grades, such as ginguro, massive and comb quartz where they are associated with visible base metal sulphides and/or electrum. Host rocks and most breccias are low grade, as most samples contain <2 ppm Au.

The history of mill liners has evolved over time and this paper tracks the changes and development of liner technology. It provides an overview of the primary types of liners, the design and the materials of construction. The design of a mill liner is driven by application, materials of construction, casting technology and handling issues. The choice of solid steel, grid liners, rubber or composites and magnetic liners is based on many factors.The methods used for monitoring wear and predicting eventual change out time are many and varied. The contribution of discrete element modeling (DEM) analysis in predicting wear profile is discussed.Mill trajectory and DEM software programs are used with great effect to predict the effect of lifter height, face angle, high low lifters or mill speed. In the field, trial and operational experience is used or improvements/design concepts at one operation are applied to another. Broken mill lifters, accentuated wear and other problems can be better understood using hardness testing, chemical analysis and photo micrograph analysis of pearlitic or martensitic structure along with fracture face observations. This forms a part of the typical root cause analysis. However given correct and sound liner and lifter, feed and discharge design media selection, and materials of construction, the majority of premature liner or bolting failure is normally attributed to incorrect operational methods such as excessive high ball to feed ratio, incorrect mill speed relating to lifter ball throw, incorrect media selection, "tramp" material entering the mill charge from upstream or recirculating process and understanding the specific mill operation in question.It is hoped that this paper will benefit mill operators who are faced with challenges of improving wear life and at the same time optimizing mill throughput and performance.CITATION:Connelly, D and Thompson, C, 2013. BUCKETT (Lake View and Star Limited) : At the outset I should like to add my congratulations to those already extended to Mr..Norwood on his excellent paper, which has given us all an inspiration to strive further to improve our plant recoveries. In some respects this paper has left us so little to discuss without considerable time spent on. further research work. At all points one is met by a baffling array of facts which leave one feeling hesitant to speak.The careful and methodical way in which Mr. Norwood went along step by step until all channels of research presenting themselves were tested to his own satisfaction leaves me with but a few comments to make. Particularly striking to me is the explanation of the residual gold values in calcines by recrystallization of haematite and here is a line to be attacked by future studies. This will be mentioned again later.Particularizing on the paper, the first point that struck me was the method of change of pyrite through to the final haematite. I have never been able to satisfy myself that a sample taken from various positions along a roaster when cooled, as described on p. 397, represented a fair sample of the conditions at that point, but I must confess that I have not found a substitute that did satisfy me.However, the following figures are illuminating... But to fill dry a receptacle of known volume with calcines, as described by Mr. Norwood, gives the following apparentspecific gravities:

Sufficient time has elapsed since the enactment of the amendments to the mining legislation in 1981 to enable an examination to be made of the way in which the licensing system operates in practice. One of the most important decisions in resource management in New Zealand is whether or not rights of access to the resource should be conferred by the Crown upon an appropriate private sector participant. The licensing system is the means for allocating these rights of access. The manner in which the licensing system is administered, therefore, is crucial to natural resource management in New Zealand. What is the mining licensing system in New Zealand designed to achieve? This simple question admits of no easy answer. Is it the identification and development of the mineral resources of New Zealand? Are these objectives tempered by issues of resource conservation and environmental protection? Is a balance to be achieved among these competing factors? Does the legislation contain any priorities? Does the system respond in an ad hoc manner to particular facts and circumstances or does it operate within a more predictable framework? To what extent are decisions made on access to minerals with reference to the development or conservation of other resources? These questions may be summarised in the title to this paper which poses the question whether mining licences are instruments for resource management.

A mineral grain finder is described which is easily constructed to fit onto the stage of a standard reflected light ore microscope.The device is most useful in relocating particular grains or mineral associations on 30 mm diameter polished sections. The use of the grain finder in the teaching of ore microscopy is outlined.

It is proposed that a waste rock dump be constructed on slopes consisting of soft colluvium and weathered Chim Formation mudstone at the Porgera Gold Mine, in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG). Geolog- ical, geomorphological and geophysical investigations were conducted in support of geotechnical studies to assess the physical character of the 6km2 site. Geomorphological studies focused on the extent and nature of colluvium cover and landslide activity. Detailed ground traverse mapping resulted in classification and delineation of eight terrains and seven material types. Seismic refraction and resistivity profiling, combined with drilling, provided subsurface data. Results were presented as standard profiles, coloured contoured sections and plans. Subsurface features, including deep colluvial channels, buried cliffs, slump blocks and buried alluvial channels, were identified. Results of the combined investigations allowed designers to model the colluvium/ bedrock surface and identify critical areas of deep, mobile colluvium and weak bedrock. A design approach was developed which accounted for the morphology of landslide systems and distribution of colluvium types.

The National Economic Viewpoint? Any substantial project undertaken by private enterprise would normally be subjected to a Discounted Cash Flow analysis of its commercial viability, and would proceed only if the rate of return was judged satisfactory. A 'national viewpoint' analysis attempts to do the same but from the viewpoint of the community as a whole. The objective is to ensure that those projects are undertaken which yield the best return, economic and social, to the nation as a whole.

Total mechanisation in the Western district of New South Wales is quite a recent addition to productive methods in that State, for it was only in 1940 that the first colliery was equipped for this method of winning coal. Now almost all mines either are totally mechanised or are planning to get their coal by these means.This marked change in recent years is explained by the salient features of the industry's history. Collieries in New South Wales had generally been subjected to low selling prices forced on them by over-production and severe competition. Little money was available out of profits to purchase machinery, and returns on capital were so poor that inducement to invest money in the industry was nonexistent.The second world war brought price fixing at the already low prices. It was not until the post-war period that there has been any inducement to mechanise.Much credit for mechanisation can be given to the Joint Coal Board, a government body formed in 1948. Pursuing a broad plan for the rejuvenation of the industry, this Board, purchased large quantities of machinery for use in, mines under hire-purchase agreement. These agreements encouraged machine mining, and this fact, together with the ensuing production economies, has improved the financial position of the industry.The Board has also been instrumental in the granting of increases in the fixed price of coal, so that the industry has been given an even greater boost in the direction of mechanisation.

At Ohio Creek, 3 km northwest of the Thames bonanza goldfield, porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation is hosted in a dacite porphyry associated with porphyry intrusion breccias and overlying andesites and dacites. The geological setting is a Jurassic greywacke basement overlain by Late Miocene andesite-dacite volcanics which are extensively altered to propylitic and argillic assemblages. Diamond drilling at Ohio Creek in 1978-1981 by Amoco Minerals intersected low grade Cu-Au (0.12-0.20% C~ 0.23-0.4 glt Au) mineralisation An advanced argillic 'alteration cap containing quartz-alunite¦dickite or pyrophyllite-dickite¦diaspore is centred on the adjacent Lookout Rocks and has potential for high sulfidation Au-Cu mineralisation. There is a zonation from potassic K-feldspar-magnetitealteration at depth in the dacite porphyry, through an overlying phyllic quartzsericite- pyrite zone which is overprinted by pyrophyllite in the overlying advanced argillic cap. Early quartz stockwork veinlets associated with the potassic alteration contain fluid inclusions that trapped a highly saline (50-80 wt% NaCI equiv) fluid at high temperatures (450 to >600¦C) indicative of a magmatic fluid. Some chalcopyrite is associated with slightly later quartz-magnetite veinlets, but the bulk of the copper occurs as disseminated chalcopyrite associated with the phyllic alteration. The potassic alteration is surrounded and overprinted by propylitic chlorite¦epidote alteration. Late polymetallic sulfide-quartz-anhydrite veins occur within and around the margins of the porphyry system as in the Kaiser Reef. Fluid inclusions associated with these late veins were formed at temperatures of about 250-320¦C from low salinity (1-3 wfl~ NaCI equiv) fluids. The spatial association between porphyry eu-Au mineralisation, advanced argillic alteration and polymetallic sulfide veins suggests that they are genetically part of the same hydrothennal system. This is consistent with reconnaissanceK-Ar dates of 11.6-10.7 Ma for the intrusive porphyry at Ohio Creek, alunite in the advanced argillic alteration zone at Lookout Rocks and sericite selvedges from the Waiotahi gold-quartz veins at Thames.

This paper provides a history of the challenges that were experienced while treating both the clayey oxide gold ores and the supergene copper-gold ores at the Boddington Gold Mine during the period 1989 to 2001. However the bigger challenge was to find a process flow sheet that would allow the economic treatment of the large low-grade competent gold-copper resource that underlies the oxide and supergene gold resource. Metallurgical test work and engineering studies on this resource started in the mid 1990s and culminated in the approval in 2006 of the 35 Mtpa Boddington Expansion Project to treat this material. The process flow sheet provides the basis of an energy efficient comminution circuit that includes high pressure grinding rolls and a treatment circuit with gravity separation, flash and conventional flotation to produce a precious metal low-grade copper concentrate followed by cyanide leaching of the rougher-scavenger and cleaner tailings streams. The treatment circuit allows maximum removal of copper minerals prior to cyanide leaching and so provides an environmentally responsible tailings disposal circuit.

The silver deposits of Rockvale near Armidale, N.S.W., occur in fissure veins in epi-Permian granite. The ore is fine grained, mineralogically complex, and contains twenty-seven different minerals including eleven silver minerals. The ore is characterized by a unique multiple unmixing from a sphalerite solvent. The following minerals have exsolved from solid solution in sphalerite: pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite I, cubanite II (chalcopyrrhotite), valleriite, "brown" stannite, "olive" stannite, argentian tetrahedrite, pyrargyrite, and an unknown grey-white mineral. Several of these minerals derive from a second-stage unmixing, the immediate solvents of which are the products of earlier exsolutions.INTRODUCTIONSmall silver-rich base metal deposits occur at several localities near Armidale in the New England district of New South Wales. Chief among these are the Tulloch Mine and the Rockvale Mine at Rockvale, 27 miles SE. of Armidale, and the Tait's Gulley deposits some 15 miles NE. of Armidale.At Rockvale (Kenny, 1928), irregular lenses of lode material, principally quartz and calcite, occur along a zone of shearing in biotite granite and altered sediments. The orebodies had a maximum width of 6 ft but averaged 2 ft 6 in. The largest lens was 150 ft long and 50 ft high. The Rockvale deposits were worked for both arsenic and silver; 2,897 tons of arsenic were produced but no figures are available forsilver.Little is known of the Tait's Gulley deposits which occur in folded arenites containing small but rich veins of pyrargyrite with base metal sulphides.The sediments in these localities are possibly Silurian.
