Procedures employing thiocyanate and dithiol complexes of molybdenum have been developed for the determination of the metal in the presence of large quantities of ferric iron. The procedures are developed for field application and it is possible to complete 200 analyses per day with laboratory accuracy. Use is made of sulphuric acid extraction and ascorbic acid reduction in the case of the thiocyanate procedure whilst the reducing system in the dithiol procedure is potassium iodide-sodium sulphite. Using a simple photometer the range of determination possible is 0-10~g for the thiocyanate procedure and 0-5 g for dithioI.INTRODUCTIONOf the many colorimetric procedures that have been developed for the determination of molybdenum only those using the thiocyanate or toluene-3, 4-dithiol complexes of the metal are sufficiently free from interference to be of use in geochemical prospecting. Rapid methods based on both these complexes 'have been developed at the. Broken Hill Division of The University of New South Wales as part of a general programme designed to improve geochemical procedures. Whilst speed rather than high accuracy is the important factor in prospecting, the aim of the programme is to develop procedures which will allow determination of 200· samples per man-day without loss of normal laboratory accuracy for the methods concerned.In most geochemical procedures visual estimation of a coloured complex is used in the determination of the quantity of metal present. Development on the North Kalgurli mine has established a major penetration of ore into calc schist. This is controlled by a system of east-dipping strike faults. Previously, most calc schist ore bodies were regarded as being confined to the quartz dolerite greenstonecak schist contact environment.INTRODUCTIONOne of the most interesting and economically important developments which has taken place in the Kalgoorlie Field over the past 20 years is the proved penetration of ore into calc schist on the North Kalgurli Mine. This is quite extensive, both laterally and in depth, and has occasioned some modification of geological thought in the search for additional ore sources.Ore has been mined in calc schist almost since the first major gold discoveries were made and the principal features of the various types of deposit are well covered in the literature of the field. However, occurrences in calc schist have not been characterised by the same degree of continuity or frequency as the innumerable lode formations in the more favourable quartz dolerite, and there has been a tendency to regard them as isolated and discontinuous ore bearing structures, occurring only under very special conditions.It is not intended to describe the whole range of calc schist ore occurrences but only major controlling structures, whose penetration therein has been definitely established and in which an appreciable amount of ore has been and is still being found. It is considered that similar structures may present a major objective for future exploratory work in other parts of the field.

The purpose of this paper is to cover in a general way the extent, geology, quality of product, working methods and trials of the coal mining industry. of New South Wales from 1946 to the present day, with particular reference to the Western field.It must be clearly understood that any opinions expressed are those of the author and not necessarily those of the Joint Coal Board.The extent of the Western coal field at the present stage of investigation may be said to be from a few miles east of Katoomha to a few miles north-west of the township of Ulan, the total distance being 150 miles.To the west of a line from the Western Highway from Lithgow through Wallerawang, PortIand, Tyldesley, Ben Bullen, Kandos and Rylstone, there are no signs of coal except for one or two outiiers in the neighbourhood of Portland. To the east of this line the coal-bearing areas extend to the seaboard approximately 80 miles to the east.GEOLOGY AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COAL SEAMSThe Western coal measures belong to the Upper or Newcastle series, which have been correlated with the Sciritheru or lllawarra, and the North-western or Gunnedah measures. Being close to the margin of the coal basin the Western measures have an average thickness of only 200 ft. to 500 ft., or approximately one-half of the maximum development of the Newcastle measures. They are underlain by Upper Marine beds which in turn rest directly on Devonian rocks.

KIeeman (1968) described practice in the Mount Hebbard dump concentrator, Broken Hill, N.S.W. The purpose of this note is to give data on flotation pulp chemistry in the plant for comparison with results of Woodcock and Jones (1970a, 1970b).Ten chemical parameters were measured at ten points in the circuit using the techniques of Woodcock and Jones (1970a, 1970b). Fig. 1 shows a condensed time plot of some continuous measurements in conditioner overflow and rougher feed. Fig. 2 shows average values of selected parameters at the start and end of each of the three rougher flotation stages.DISCUSSIONpH and redox potentiaIsFig. 1 shows that pH and Eh were relatively constant at the start of sulphide lead flotation. There was a fairly steady increase in pH throughout the circuit (Fig. 2), but flotation was always conducted in a slightly acid pulp in spite of the large amount of alkaline reagents added. Eh values became more positive as the pulp progressed through the circuit (Fig. 2) in accord with results elsewhere.

A unique, regional grid of deep (12 - 14 second record length), seismic reflection and refraction data has been recorded by the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) across the offshore Gippsland Basin and parts of the adjacent Bass Basin, in southeastern Australia. These data have been combined with onshore mapping to produce a new model for the development of the Gippsland and adjacent Bass Strait basins. Overall, the Gippsland Basin contains up to 12 - 14 km of sediment in an ESE-trending depocentre bounded on its north and northwestern margins by a detachment ramp, and on its southern side by a relatively linear, listric fault system. The basin, together with the adjacent Bass and Otway Basins, appears to have formed as part of a linked, largely- strike-slip to 'transtensional' system, which started to extend through Bass Strait, probably during the latest Jurassic. Each of the basins developed by movement on a common detachment or detachment complex, which produced headwall extension at their western ends, in the areas now occupied by the Strzelecki Ranges, Otway Ranges - Torquay Sub-basin, and Robe Trough. Adjustments and reactivation from the mid Cretaceous of several postulated microplates in the region, largely in response to Tasman Basin rifting, gave rise to the wrench-related and compressional structures which form the major petroleum targets in the Gippsland Basin. However, the same process formed largely extensional stuctures in the Bass Basin. Our interpretation of the tectonic history of the Gippsland Basin leads us to the conclusion that there may have been several phases of petroleum generation and migration, and that potential petroleum traps appear to exist in the deeper section, in structures sometimes not reflected at the top or near-top Latrobe Group levels.

Small scale gold mining operations in Papua New Guinea (PNG) have been observed to use very low flow rates of water in sluice boxes. In a series of laboratory experiments carried out to determine whether this approach was unsatisfactory or not for their situation, indications were obtained that it had some advantages in the recovery of fine gold but at the cost of considerable throughput. The separation mechanisms operating in such a system are analysed.

The Olympic Dam iron-oxide copper-gold (IOCG) uranium-silver deposit is second in size only to Norilsk, the gigantic metalliferous deposit. Olympic Dam is the largest publicly declared uranium, fifth largest copper and third largest gold resource. The deposit is typified by texturally destructive brecciation and intense iron metasomatism of the Roxby Downs Granite, bedded clastic facies rocks and mafic-ultramafic dykes. The deposit contains over 100 minerals. Copper mineralisation consists of chalcopyrite, bornite and chalcocite. Uraninite, coffinite and brannerite are the dominant uranium-bearing minerals. Gold mineralisation consists of electrum, tellurides and Au-Cu alloys. Hessite is the major silver-bearing mineral. The economic minerals are disseminated throughout the breccia matrix where the average grain sizes of the Cu-sulfide, uranium, gold and silver minerals are ~50, 20, <5, <5 microns, respectively.A significant number of sampling theory-based test programs have been completed since the mid-1990s to establish sampling nomographs, select appropriate sampling (ie split versus chip and interval lengths) and sample preparation protocols, quantify the errors associated with each subsampling stage, determine the practical uncertainty limits of Olympic Dam matrix-matched standards, and identify improvement opportunities related to the ongoing assaying quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) program. Invaluable knowledge and unexpected insights gained from sampling studies at Olympic Dam have helped to improve our understanding of the distribution of economic and deleterious elements within the Olympic Dam deposit.CITATION:Ehrig, K J and Pitard, F F, 2017. Bacterial leaching of low grade quartz felspar porphyry copper ore was studied in large-scale laboratory percolation leaching columns.Limitations in the release of soluble copper showed up before fifty per cent recovery, due to occluding precipitates of iron oxides and hydroxides. Precipitates were removed by increasing the acidity of irrigation feed four-fold with respect to sulphuric acid. However, irrigation at low pH (pH 1.5) inhibited copper leaching. Resumption of bacterial leaching at pH2 was achieved by introducing a period of non-irrigation. The results suggest a 'direct' attack by bacteria on the chalcopyrite substrate rather than an 'indirect' ferric-leach mechanism.

In New York City, on the walls of the library of the United Engineering Societies are these words:"Engineering-the art of organising and directing men and of controlling the forces and materials of nature for the benefit of the human race," but who, reading the schedules of even our best engineering schools, would infer that engineering is an art or that it should always havejn mind the benefit of the human race? While it must be remembered that our engineering schools exemplify the British cult of the amateur, that cult which lets men who have never attended a lecture on "Education" or perhaps nevereven read a book on it, become enginering teachers by profession (and so educators by inference), the root of the matter is to be found in the fact that our educational aims, and consequently our educational practice, seem suited much better to the position engineering held in the community in 1900 than to the position it holds to-day. This civilization of ours has developed, !;loth for good and for ill, into one based largely on engineering achievement; technical progress is so continuous and so rapid that thevalue of descriptive knowledge of current practice is ever lessening; enough must be imparted to make the young graduate immediately employable, and this amount is sufficient for illustrating the principles on which practice is based and on which its advance depends, but the young graduate's technical progress depends much less on his having acquired additional knowledge than on his ability to acquire knowledge, so, paradoxically, the more useful knowledge there is availabJe the less of it the student should be taught.Less conspicuous but fully as important is the enlargement of the field of work of engineering graduates, especially its extension to the initiating of policies and to the broader problems of administration. At present the road to such positions lies normally through a considerable period of professional work, but it is by no means unlikely that the field will soon include much that requires little professional expel'ience. The latest outcome of science is that aII bodies are composed of vibrating atoms or molecules. In almost all mineral bodies when changing from the gaseous or liquid condition to the solid, if the vibrating molecules are allowed free play, they arrange themselves in a symmetrical manner, and at a definite angle to each other: This angle varies with each system of crystallization. In a great many bodies this process may be brought about artificially, and the growth of the crystal watched. The most common method is to dissolve some substance in water or some other liquid, on slowly evaporating the liquid, the substance dissolved will solidify and the molecules will arrange themselves in their particular crystalline form.The element carbon crystallizes in two forms; as graphite in the form of a short six-sided prism', and in the diamond generally as the octohedron in the cubical system of crystallization. Orystalline bodies, as a rule, have plain faces but what is remarkable in the diamond is that in a great many cases the faces are rounded. Its great beauty as a gem when cut, and the high artificial value placed upon it by fashion, as well as its value as a cutting and boring instrument-it being the hardest body in nature-has caused many attempts to be made to form it artificially. These attempts have met with fair success as a scientific experiment, but as a commercial speculation they have been a complete failure. The most noted of these experIments was carried out by Mr. Hannay, of Glasgow.Paraffin spirit with lithium was submitted td prolonged heating in strong wrought-iron tubes securely welded. In most of the experiments the tubes exploded; but in a few cases the experiments were successful, and on cutting open the tubes small crystals of diamonds were found embedded in a black mass.Despretz produced minute diamonds under the influence of a powerful electric current from coal.

Titanium is not yet being produced on a commercial scale despite the facts that it has some impressive properties, and that it occurs very abundantly in easily-mined, highgrade oxide ores. One important reason for this is that the excellent mechanical properties of the metal were not widely recognised and appreciated until about twenty years ago.Another factor which has tended to retard progress in titanium metallurgy has been the realization that the oxide minerals of titanium are very stable; in other words, considerable energy has to be expended to reduce the oxide to metal. Table 1 presents the minimum energies which would have to be expended to produce one ton of each of the metals, aluminium, magnesium, titanium and iron from their respective oxides under theoretically ideal conditions at normal temperature and pressure. At higher temperatures, the minimum energy requirements are different, but the values for the various metals still fall in the same order as indicated in Table 1.In actual fact, the energy consumption in the case of any particular metal is higher than the ideal value by an amount which can be determined only by' the results of plant practice. The need to hoist increasing loads from great depths is leading to the more general adoption of winders of the Koepe and Blair types. The trend has introduced a number of new problems in winding ropes, more particularly in the Koepe system where regular destructive tests during the life of a rope are not possible. Consequently, the importance of introducing non-destructive tests is much greater, especially so in the case of Koepe ropes used for deep winding where there are three major destructive fatiguing influences. These are rotational effects when a vertical rope is changed end-for- end each trip, the much greater range of stress to which the rope is subjected each trip as compared with drum winding, and the destructive effect of a high coefficient of friction between wheel and rope. A plea for a lower coefficient in the interest of better rope and tread life, substantiated by analysis, is made for Koepe winders operating at depth.Co-ordination of rope testing with general hoisting problems is stressed and the active participation of the Wire Rope Committee of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Ltd. in the promotion ofthe project is noted.The general introduction of a rope testing programme in Australia, personnel requirements and some local basic research in the subject to cope with future demands are considered.

The Burra Burra Mine is situated in complexly folded Torrensian dolomites and limestones forming the faulted axial region of a major anticline. The orebody mined was largely of secondary origin and confined between two faults, Kingston's on the west and Tinline's on the east. The orebody occurred at the junction between cherty dolomites and a clastic limestone with a large mass of marble breccia along its western margin. Secondary ore consisted of carbonates and oxides in the breccia and the ore bed and detrital copper minerals deposited as part of a clastic breccia in sinkholes and solution cavities in the dolomites and ore beds.Primary sulphides occur disseminated in the marble breccia and in stratiform habit in the ore bed. Kingston's so-called "lode" may be mineralized marble breccia.The marble breccia appears to be of diapiric or sedimentary origin and there is evidence to support a sedimentary origin for some of the copper sulphides. No igneous rocks have been discovered within 20 miles of the mine and any hydrothermal activities were probably at comparatively low temperature. The possibility of extensive stratiform and disseminated copper sulphide mineralization in the marble breccia and ore bed requires testing by further drilling and geophysical surveys.INTRODUCTIONThe re-interpretation of Burra Burra geology and ore formation discussed in this paper resulted from a comprehensive investigation of the mine and its surrounding district begun in December 1961 and in progress at the time of writing. (February 1963). The decision to investigate Burra Burra was taken after a thorough examination of records and reports of all non-ferrous metal deposits throughout South Australia and was given impetus by a report by Thomson (1963) suggesting a sedimentary origin for the copper mineralization. Although the author does not concur fully with Thomson's interpretation there is no doubt that sedimentary processes have played an important part in the formation of the Burra Burra copper deposit, nor is there any doubt that igneous activity played no part.

Polyacrylamide flocculating agent has been used in the Leaching Division 'of the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited since October, 1960. The number of thickeners in the continuous thickening stage was thereby reduced from eight to three. There has been an increase of 25 per cent in throughput and a reduction of solids in thickener over-flow from 3-4 g/l. solids to 0·5 g Ir. solids. Reagent addition has been at the rate of 0·25 lb Separan NP10 per ton solids.Additionally there has been a gain of 3 per cent in current efficiency as the direct result of the addition of Separan NP10 to purified cadmium sulphate solution priOl; to electrolysis for cadmium metal. A smoother deposit has resulted and it has been possible to increase deposition time between strippings from 47 to 71 hr. However, there has been a slight increase in the lead content of the cadmium metal produced.The use of Separan NP10 to settle copper bearing residue in a batch process stage has resulted in a five-fold increase in settlement rate and a reduction in purification cycle time.INTRODUCTIONThe Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, Risdon, Tasmania, produces zinc by electrolysis of purified zinc sulphate solution, the raw material being zinc sulphide concentrate. In the Risdon process (Van Arsdale, 1953; J ohnstone, 1953; Ross, 1949) the compound zinc ferrite (ZnO.Fe203) is formed during the concentrate roasting stage. When the roasted material is leached in dilute sulphuric acid the zinc ferrite is not attacked, and it remains as part of the insoluble leach residue, of which it may form as much as two-thirds of the whole. About twelve months ago, owing to the increasing quantity of stone and dirt being drawn frQm the Victorian State Coal Mine due to the large amount of dead work below ground, cutting, faults, etc, and to the increasing quan#ty of banded coal beingworked, the writer was forced to consider the question of economy in handling the spoil at the surface. The method in operation at the time was to run out level dumps fro,m the, tipping floor of the heapstead, or brace, and to tip most of the skips of stone in tipplers at the ends of the dumps, the remainder of the skips being side-tipped to widen the dumps.The method, whilst quite satisfactory for dealing with a few skips of stone, was found to be costly as the dumps extended, and the number of skips to be dealt with increased from 300. to 400 per day of two shifts;. therefore, in order to expedite thework and cheapen its cost, the writer devised an improved method which may be qescribed as follows :-(1) The stone is tipped into a hopper car which holds about 10 skips(2) The hopper car is hauled up an inclined dump by means of an electric winch.(3) The spoil is dumped from the car forwards or to either side, as required.(4) The car is returned to the starting point for a further load.Plate I Fig. 1 gives an idea of the construction of the hopper car. Project cost control procedures and computer systems have enjoyed a successful and simple relationship over the past decade, thanks primarily to the proliferation of portable computers or PC's. Prior to the introduction of this technology, project control was largely a manual and somewhat onerous task of historical data compilations, with little time available for dynamic forecasting, staged planning, or pre-emptive cost control. Automated systems developed during this era were resident on "Heavy Iron" or mainframe computers and were expensive to maintain and operate. Use of these early systems was limited to large engineering, construction, and industrial concerns with the economies of scale and funding required for their successful application. Systems were either designed for critical path analysis or task scheduling, but rarely integrated with the other, much less cost control.

For the purposes of this discussion it is assumed that contributors should express the thoughts that arise from their personal experience. So wide is the range of mineral deposits, and so varied the methods employed in their discovery and development, that no two geologists are likely to have been impressed with the same applications of their science. The author's own personal experience has been, during recent years at least, very largely concerned with the broader aspects of the employment of scientific method and geological knowledge to the problems of exploration and exploitation, for the guidance of the general public and governmental authority rather than of mine executives and directors. The view-point thus reached is likely to differ in many respects from that of men who are much more intimately concerned with the mining problems of a single metal or a single mining field, and for this reason a statement may perhaps supplement those from others whose experience has been markedly different.It may well happen that, at some not distant date in the future, when systematic and comprehensive instruction in economic geology is embodied in the courses- prescribed for mining engineers during their years of training, the author's comments will be quitesuperfluous; but at the present time they appear to him to call for expression.The Need for Training of Mining Men in Economic Geology.Contact over a period of many years with mining men who have had different kinds of training and experience has been convincing that there is a general reluctance to acquire a full rational understanding of the geological factors involved in exploratory and developmental problems. The correction of this attitude is regarded as vital to the industry and it is necessary to insist that the outstanding requirement of the present day is the utilization of all branches of geological, investigation in the field and the laboratoryby men who have had systematic and specialized training in these matters. The science of geology is many-sided, but is, nevertheless, whole and essentially indivisible. No one can afford to disregard any fraction of its content 'or any of its methods of investigation.The greatest advances have been made in the understarnding of the occurrence of mineral deposits by those whose knowledge Qfbasal principles, has been soundest, whose endeavour has been to ascertain all their relationships in space and time, whose attention to detail of all kinds has been keenest, and at the same time, whose capability to distinguish between major and minor features has been most marked.With the passage of the years and the accumulation of data from many lands, it has been possible to build up a great body of information regarding the primary deposition and secondary alteration of mineral occurrences, which is of the utmost value in guiding thesearch for new deposits to take the place of those that become exhausted.
