Most mining operations have been happy to live in blissful ignorance of what their equipment is really capable of. Shareholders have been shown increasing tonnes output per employee (due to rationalising employee numbers). It is now known that the best practice for large mining trucks is 52 per cent higher than average or best practice for excavators is 41 per cent higher than average, or 38 per cent in shovels or 35 per cent with draglines, etc. The data is available. The bell curve of performance is flat. Substantial underperformance is rife. If you are working in or supplying equipment or services to one of the majority of operating mines that donÆt achieve best practice surely you want to know why. Or maybe you donÆt? For many mining people this sort of knowledge could be dangerous to their career so keeping the MD or CEO in the dark is a good option. Many suppliers donÆt want the performance of their equipment benchmarked? Mining consultants donÆt have the data so they are happy to keep guessing. Unfortunately, many Business Improvement or Business Excellence projects are about ticking the participantÆs æcareer boxesÆ. The first step to capacity utilisation is knowing what the capacity is. Even then people and culture will get in the way. People are the biggest hurdle to capacity utilisation. This paper will discuss what the mine of the future (and today) will need to do to utilise the productive capacity of its assets. It is not just benchmarking. It is not just automation. It is not just technology. It is about engaging those people who impact on equipment performance; right from the operator up to the Mine Manager. Doing it better involves a process to facilitate change and a culture which says it is OK to try even if you are wrong.

This paper examines the problem of optimising the life-of-mine costs of an underground mine, focussing particularly on the costs associated with the underground development needed to provide access to and haulage from the ore zones. This mine optimisation problem is modelled as a network and a solution technique is outlined. The effectiveness of this solution technique is then demonstrated by applying it to a prototype test example and some actual case studies. Finally, extensions of this technique to other underground mining problems are discussed.

Advances in technology have led to larger and deeper open pit mines and, consequently, also increased the potential economic impact associated with slope failures. If the ultimate aim of mining operations is to maximise project profit, it is surprising to see related research activities have mostly been focusing on technical areas such as slope stability modelling, but with limited studies conducted to date to assess the relationship between geotechnical uncertainties and economic risk. Given most major decisions in the mining industry nowadays are made by management staff with financial background, any design approach that would help to link slope stability analysis results with monetary values would no doubt enhance communication between geotechnical practitioners and decision makers. This paper presents a study which assesses economic impact of slope failures to assist in mine planning. The study also estimates the impact of slope failures on project value, which would enable economic risks associated with pit slope designs to be closely examined. The proposed risk assessment techniques, used by financial institutions for many years to assess portfolio risks, can assist geotechnical practitioners in quantifying risks of slope failures. Risk-adjusted concepts are also suggested to assist management in selecting a slope design with optimal risk and return ratio.

The Government of Canada recently passed a new regulation to control the liquid discharges from metal mines in Canada. The Metal Mining Effluent Regulation of the Federal Fisheries Act will come into force within the next six months. As a result the Ontario Regional Office of Environment Canada has developed a compliance promotion program to accompany the new regulation. How the mines implement the regulation will be key to its success. This paper will briefly outline the components of this regulation, including the reporting structure, the discharge parameters and limits, as well as the requirement for the mines to conduct long-term environmental effects monitoring on their effluent discharge. The presentation will give a brief account of the compliance promotion program, and then focus on the spill trends from Ontario mining operations. The province of Ontario has the largest concentration of metal mining operations in the country with approximately 40 active mines.

During 2015 and 2016, the authors conducted a number of surveys, workshops and reviews of ventilation and gas management practices in Australian underground coalmines. The study was funded by ACARP with a brief to identify gaps in ventilation and gas management practices for current and future needs, and to prepare a road map for change that would assist in delivering improvements.The study found that despite many examples of leading practice, gas and ventilation management is not afforded the attention and priority that is warranted and that this must be remedied if future operational performance targets are to be achieved and the safety of the industry protected. A Loss of Strength of Gold Sulfide Concentrate Before Grinding and Cyanidation Using Magnetic Impulse Treatment Gold recovery from sulfide concentrates is going with cyanidation usually. The fine grinding to 95 per cent -0.020 mm is required for refractory concentrates, in which gold encapsulated by sulfides. According energy consumption is 10 and more kW h/ton. At this paper we suggested to use magnetic-impulse treatment with small energy consumption 0.1-0.2 kW h/ton for loss of sulfide strength before grinding and cyanidation. The object of studies was the gold-pyrite flotation concentrate which was produced from ores at the Kumtor Mine, Kyrgyzstan. The concentrate composition, physic-mechanical properties and loss of strength mechanism were studied there. The tested concentrate assayed, per cent: 62.5 pyrite, 10 feldspar, 10 mica, 5 quarts, 5 carbonates, 4 haematite and another. Haematite has intimate intergrowth with pyrite ? partially with quarts. The magnetic susceptibility of haematite and less pyrite causes in these grains and mineral complex the effect of magneticstriction. As a result numbers of deformations are increased and minerals and gold are also exposed. Lateral and longitudinal strains in the minerals by magneticstriction were calculated in this work. By quantitative analysis of pyrite mono fractions were showed next micro impurities: alumina, arsenic, nickel and others elements. These micro impurities are generated a charged dislocation, cracks and micro cracks. The inter-granular links at a boundary of haematite-pyrite, pyrite-quarts, haematite-quarts have disintegrated. The dislocation is depended from mineral modulus elasticity. It was determined an indicator of mineral electro-mechanic sensitivity which characterises a conversion of electro-magnetic energy to mechanic energy. Pyrite has most dielectric constant and electro-mechanic sensitivity as haematite and quarts. The dislocations in pyrite are account for clacks and a loss of mineral strength. Size analysis of the flotation concentrate after magnetic-impulse treatment is shown the increasing the content of thin fractions by comparison no treated concentrate. Magnetic-impulse treatment has increased the effect of the next fine grinding too. The electronic microscopy has confirmed a loss of strength of gold sulfide concentrate. The gold recovery by cyanidation increased too after preliminary magnetic-impulse treatment of concentrate by laboratory tests. The magnetic-impulse concentrate studies at the Kumtor plant have showed that a recovery gold increase in the processing of cyanidation. The consumption of energy also reduced.

Cretaceous to Cenozoic sedimentary basins in Western Southland include a wide range of non-marine and marine sediments, in a structurally complex setting dominated by major fault systems. A reassessment of their mineral potential confirms large quantities of nonmetallic minerals (limestone, aggregate, marl), and smaller reserves of bituminous coal, lignite, clays, and oil shale. Hydrocarbon potential is largely untested. Metallic minerals are present in trace amounts, apart from platinum group minerals and some detrital gold. In the offshore area, seismic data suggest the hydrocarbon potential is significant. The Orepuki area has the most interest onshore.

The provision of professional engineering services in Queensland is regulated through the Professional Engineers Act 2002. The Act requires that anyone providing professional engineering services must be registered and is subject to continuing professional development requirements. The engineering profession is actively requesting the Queensland Government to expand registration to include associate and technologist engineering practitioners. In view of the strong moves at the Federal level towards national registration of professional groups the lessons of the Queensland experience are very relevant across Australia. This paper describes the rationale behind the Act and outlines its operation. It discusses some misconceptions regarding the applicability of the Act to various engineering activities. There is much that the Act has to offer individual engineers and industry generally in establishing, articulating and maintaining standards for professional engineering work. The paper considers legal actions taken to date under the provisions of the Act and discusses the way in which this parallels industry moves towards quality assurance of work force capability.

Several years of operating experience of over 100 gold recovery operations on the West Coast has provided a database from which the basic operating costs of these types of operations can be characterised. Using figures generated from the averaging of plant operating costs throughout the region and financial modelling using Lotus spreadsheets has been developed to analyse both existing and proposed developments. This type of modelling has several uses: 1. Identification of the impact on profitability of changes in management practices, finance costs, operating costs and revenue streams. 2. Project evaluation and planning. 3. Profitability projections for development financing. 4. Troubleshooting with existing operations. 5. Valuation of existing operations and properties.

Changes in feed size distribution can have significant effects in rod mill grinding. The product sizing resulting from wet batch milling of a tin ore showed little influence on fines production after truncating the feed at either the coarse or fine end. The addition of fine material caused a less amount of fines to be produced and a possible increase in grinding at coarse sizes, although this is complicated by the changing feed size distribution. The changes in feed size distribution caused no tendency for preferential grinding of the cassiterite.

The demand for gallium has increased significantly over the last few decades due to the expanding use of Ga compounds in the electronics industry. Because it is widely dispersed and rarely found naturally in concentrations greater than 0.1%, Ga is expensive (approximately US$500/kg) and difficult to produce in large quantities.   A previous study of metals in geothermal systems reported significant quantities of Ga present in the muds on the northeast margin of Lake Rotokawa, an acidic lake associated with a high-temperature geothermal field situated in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. Similar muds are present in many other geothermal fields in the zone, suggesting that geothermal muds could be a commercial source ofGa.

A key issue facing mine managers in remote locations in Australia and overseas is that of managing a fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) workforce. Current Australian research (Sibbel, in prep) indicates that FIFO employees and their families do not differ from the general population in terms of their overall mental health and the well-being of their family relationships. However, they do face unique issues/pressures associated with the lifestyle, the impacts of which are dependent on the policies and practices of the company as well as individual coping and support mechanisms. Successful management of a FIFO site and its employees therefore requires specialist knowledge and skills beyond those of a solely residential operation. The well-being of the FIFO workforce depends on both site and individual employee characteristics, and has implications for productivity and turnover, as well as safety and health. In addition, although FIFO separates individuals and their families in time and space, the interaction between work and home must be acknowledged and taken into account. Drawing on findings from recent Australian and international FIFO research (eg Annear, Poot and Kingston, 2006; Beach, Brereton and Cliff, 2003; Brereton et al, 2006; Gallegos, 2006; Keown, 2005; Parkes, Carnell and Farmer, 2005; Sibbel, 2001, 2004, in prep; Shrimpton and Storey, 1996; Storey, 2001; Watts, 2004) this paper discusses key understandings of both the positive and negative impacts of FIFO employment on employees and their families, and provides practical management strategies as an aid to the development of best practice. Individual impacts including fatigue and loneliness, as well as family issues such as communication, continually changing roles and responsibilities and the impacts of regular parent absence are key areas which can be ameliorated by appropriate management understanding and action. A flexible framework approach is presented that is suitable for a diversity of operations, including principal and contractor workforces of different sized operations.

The efficiency of any iron ore value-adding operation is closely associated with detailed knowledge of the mineralogy, especially in the processing of lower grade and complex ores. There are a number of physico-chemical properties of iron oxide mineral phases (eg goethite, hematite and magnetite) that can be prudently exploited to enhance their processing efficiency. Recent iron ore studies on the upgrading of high-goethite iron ores have highlighted that the knowledge of the various phases of both iron oxide and gangue minerals is critical to the economic processing of these ores. Appropriate knowledge of this kind can lead to better-designed flow sheets for economically viable production of saleable products. With the increasing use of goethitic materials as blend components of iron ore concentrates for steelmaking, this review paper focuses on relevant beneficiation processes and the pivotal role of mineralogy and petrology in producing saleable iron oxide concentrates from ore blends. For goethites, mineral impurities including silica, phosphorus and alumina are very important. Physical separations, as well as those incorporating higher temperatures, have also been included in this review as potential processes to upgrade high-goethite ores.CITATION:Quast, K, Addai-Mensah, J and W, Skinner, 2017. The relationship between comminution testwork results and the milling circuit that is subsequently selected is not a direct one and frequently involves recourse to databases of past test results. This in itself reflects the lack of a systematic engineering approach in the design process. This paper reviews comminution tests for SAG mill design in an attempt to identify where the essential information comes from that will be used in mill selection. The conclusion is that results from traditional test methods, including obscure and little used procedures like the Mokken test, are more valuable from an engineering perspective than parameters for breakage rate based modelling. Suggestions are made on ways in which existing test procedures can be enhanced in order to generate parameters that can be directly related to characteristics of the milling circuit being designed.

The role of government and the community has changed significantly over the last two decades in relation to environment protection, particularly in the mining sector. Increased community expectations have moved well ahead of regulatory requirements, and there is now a much greater appreciation generally of the concepts of ecologically sustainable development and intergenerational equity, and the gap between current practice and practices which would be in harmony with these concepts. Besides providing a `safety net' through regulations to ensure that basic environmental performance standards are met, government is now working proactively with the mining industry to encourage higher levels of environmental performance. This paper describes some initiatives between the Commonwealth government and the industry designed to achieve these higher levels of environmental performance, through programs aimed at the paradigms of best practice environmental management and continual improvement.

In this study, 23 samples of leached ash (LA) were collected from an ash pond at Loy Yang Power Station and geotechnically characterised. The samples were collected at various depths and locations within the ash pond on two separate occasions in order to account for the full variability. The LA within the ash pond at Loy Yang Power Station (LYPS) was found to vary in texture from silt to sand, depending on the location from where the sample was collected. Samples collected near the ash pond inlet discharge point, for instance, contained more than 50 per cent sand sized particles and were subsequently classified under the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) as silty sand (SM). Further downstream of the inlet discharge, the LA became progressively finer and was classified accordingly as elastic silt (MH) when the sand content became less than 50 per cent. Basic geotechnical testing revealed that the LA from Loy Yang Power Station was generally acceptable as a landfill cover material. The permeability of LA, however, was generally too high for prescriptive covers, (ie resistive covers that generally rely on the impervious nature of the material to control percolation). Alternative covers, generally rely on the store/release function of a capillary or monolithic barrier to prevent percolation into the landfill. Subsequently, a material that can maintain a high water storage capacity while at the same time, readily allow infiltration and evapotranspiration is required for an alternative cover. Sandy silt and silty sand are optimal soils for alternative covers, as they do not yield water to gravity forces, but do give up most of the water in their pores when subjected to high-matric suction (Kavazanjian, 2001). The effectiveness of alternative covers is ultimately assessed using computer models, such as UNSAT-H and HYDRUS-2D, to rigorously perform water balance calculations. Prior to using a computer model to determine the highest possible percolation in the worst climatic conditions, it is necessary to select the most appropriate materials. This paper suggests a method to screen available materials for use as an alternative cover material on the basis of the soil water characteristic curve (SWCC).
