IN the study of the structure or the properties of a series of alloys or nonmetallic compounds, it is often advantageous to express the com-position not as percentage by weight, according to which the material is always made up and analyzed, but as the atomic percentage of the two constituents. The conversion from the one to the other is repre-sented by the formulas: 100A 100x or 1 x/A+100-x/B B(100-x) _ 100yA 100y [2] X. yA + (100 - y)B or y (100 - y) where x and y are the weight and atomic percentages respectively of the element of atomic weight A, and (100 - x) and (100 - y) are the per-centages by weight and by atoms respectively of the element of atomic weight B. While calculations according to these formulas are simple, they are time consuming if several conversions have to be made. In 1931 Water-man1 constructed a nomograph for performing the conversion, but this did not permit an accuracy greater than about 1 per cent to be obtained in the neighborhood of 50 per cent. Ölander2 has proposed a graphic method simpler than Waterman's and one that gives a uniform precision throughout the entire scale. The possible accuracy is about 0.5 per cent of the whole, depending on the size and accuracy of the coordinate paper used. Recently, Hermann3 has described a slide rule for making the calculations. Electrochemical measurements have been carried out in an auto- clave to investigate the electrochemistry of hydrogen precipitation of nickel from acetate buffered solution. After having previously obtained the rate equation for this reaction we have now made a concentrated effort to explain the rate equation electrochemically. A saturated NaC1-type Ag/AgC1 reference electrode has been improved so that it can be used in an autoclave. Polarization curves for the reaction, [H2=2H+ + 2e,] on nickel electrode were measured in solutions free from nickel ions at 185°C, and the parallel curves were obtained by changing PH2 and pH for normal and reverse reactions, respectively. Polarization curves in nickel solutions were complex, probably because the potential of hydrogen electrode is close to that of nickel and of the nickel surface altered during polarization. Then the nickel electrode potential and the reaction rate were measured simultaneously during pressure reduction at various hydrogen pressures and at various nickel concentrations. The reaction rates in terms of current density were plotted to obtain the local polarization curves for reactions Ni2+ + 2e ? Ni and H2 ?2H+ + 2e. The anodic and cathodic local polarization curves exhibit potential dependency. Therefore it is likely that the pres- sure reduction can be regarded as a coupled electrodes reaction.

A knowledge of the principles of punctuation is essential to effective and intelligible writing, for the ease and pleasure of the reader, and even his understanding, may depend upon the choice and the placing of punctuation marks. To 'punctuate' is to mark with stops or points; the word comes from the medieval Latin punctuare (punctuatus), which in turn is derived from the Latin punctum, a point. The purpose of punctuation is to show the manner in which the writing is to be understood; to indicate the relations between parts of a sentence and between successive sentences. To some extent "it does for the eye what vocal stress does for the ear", but especially it marks logical relations. Some punctuation marks, such as those indicating admiration, exclamation, and interrogation, are rhetorical as well as grammatical, but most of the common ones are logical, or grammatical. My discussion will be confined to grammatical punctuation in ordinary writing. .'The problem of punctuation in text matter", as George Summey * says, "is to employ words, points, and paragraph breaks in such a way as to achieve at the same time clearness; proper distribution of emphasis, and the desired kind of movement." The criticism of the punctuation of a sentence or of a group of sentences is not final until the context, within the paragraph, is read. A paragraph is a sentence or a group of sentences forming an independent unit of the composition; it represents a unit of thought. A multiplicity of paragraphs produces a choppy effect; 'on the other hand, paragraphs of. excessive length are tiresome, because the belaboring of one unit of thought wearies the reader. Minor industrial minerals included in this chapter are: the alum minerals, bromine, calcium chloride, epsomite and other natural magnesium salts, iodine, meerschaum, quartz, industrial crystals other than quartz, and nonfuel gases (air, helium, carbon dioxide). Alum Minerals The natural alums comprise a group of hydrated double sulfates, the most important of which are potash alum, KAI(S04)2.12H20, the "alum" of popular usage; ammonium alum, (NH4)AI(SO4)2, known mineralogically as tschermigite; and soda alum, NaAI(SO4)2.12H20. Kalinite, KAI(SO4)2.11H20, and mendozite, NaAl(SO4)2, 11H20, are fibrous monoclinic alums, distinct from the isometric species potash alum and soda alum.4 Alunite, KAI3(S04)2(OH)6, also known as alumstone or alum rock, has been used as a raw material in the manufacture of alum since early times. All the natural alums are highly soluble and occur as surface evaporation products in arid regions or in sheltered places. Potash alum, together with the other natural alums, commonly occurs as an efflorescence or crevice filling in argillaceous rocks and brown coals that contain disseminated pyrite or marcasite. The mineral is derived by the action of sulfuric acid, formed during the weathering of the sulfide, upon alkali-rich aluminum silicates. Ammonia alum is found chiefly in lignite or broad-coal beds and bituminous shales. Alunite is most commonly associated with acid volcanic rocks, where the rock has been largely altered and alunite formed owing to the presence of sulfuric acid solutions or vapors. Aluminum sulfate, which for most uses is the essential ingredient of alum, may be found in saline residues resulting from the evaporation of natural water and may be formed by the action of acid waters upon aluminous rocks. A deposit of natural potash alum occurs in an irregular network of veins associated with sulfur in rhyolite in Esmeralda County, Nevada, about 35 miles west of Tonopah and 10 miles north of Silver Peak. Alum was recovered at a plant operated on the property between 1920 and 1923 by crushing the ore to ¾ in., grinding to minus 80-mesh, and counter-current leaching; the resulting alum solution was then filtered and crystallized. Alunite was of much interest during World War I as a source of potash and during World War II as a source of alumina. The wellknown deposits at Tolfa, Italy, are veins in trachyte and have been the basis of alum manufacture there since the middle of the fifteenth century. Pure alunite is insoluble in water and in common acids, but if it is heated to 500°C it loses its water of hydration, and the residue consists largely of anhydrous potash alum, part of which is readily soluble in water or acids. If the heat is increased beyond 500°C, most of the sulfur combined with the alumina is released as oxides and the residue consists of potassium sulfate and alumina. The Pacific rim countries, comprising more than half the globe, represent a complex mix of developed and developing nations. The area comprises a large segment of the industrialized world. Within its boundaries are also found many of the world's greatest mineral resources largely concentrated in the less developed countries. The conflicting objectives of these developed and developing nations are giving rise to changes in the traditional patterns of world resource development. Powerful political and socio-economic factors affecting the world today are having a great bearing on natural resource developments in the Pacific basin. New forms of partnerships have been emerging in developing nations which have had a great impact on the mining com- munity, lending institutions, as well as political relations. The United States and Japan have been substantially responsible in the past for the development of natural resources in this area of the world. Their role, however, is undergoing significant metamorphosis. The rapidly changing economic and social environment in the developing countries is producing new tensions which affect future collaboration between producers and users of natural resources. To understand current problems, I believe, it is worthwhile to examine historical trends in this area which may help defining alternatives facing us in the future. In modern times the United States was the first country in the Pacific basin to start development of resources on a massive scale. DURING the closing days of the last Congress a resolution was passed, creating the Senate Com-mission of Gold and Silver Inquiry. The resolu-tion charges the Commission with the responsibility to investigate and report to the Congress on Jan. 1, 1924, upon the following subjects: 1. The causes of the continuing decrease in the production of gold and silver. 2. The causes of the depressed condition of the gold and silver industry in the United States. 3. The production, reduction, refining, transportation, mar-keting, sale, and uses of gold and silver in the United States and elsewhere. 4. The effect of the decreased production of gold and silver upon commerce, industry, exchange, and prices. The personnel of the Commission is as follows: Senators Pittman, Sterling, Goodling, Walsh and Oddie. At a meeting on May 8, H. N. Lawrie, a mining engi-neer and economist, was appointed as Assistant to the Commission. The present situation with respect to the gold and silver mining industries is well illustrated by the follow-ing data: The total world production of gold (in dollars) for 1915 was $468,724,918, and for 1921, $329,915,101; as shown by the reports of the U. S. Mint; and for the year 1922, $306,793,000, which is based oh a prelimi-nary estimate; this indicates a decrease of 34.5 per cent. between 1915 and 1922. The total world production of silver (in fine ounces) for 1915 was 178,850,000 oz.; for 1921, 175,268,234 oz., a decrease of 2 per cent.

THE copper-zinc phase equilibrium diagram has been the sub-ject of many investigations. Until recently, however, the boundary of the terminal solid solution of copper in zinc (eta) has not been thoroughly investigated. This paper reports determinations of the solid solubility of copper in zinc at temperatures from 100° to 400° C., the course of the liquidus and solidus for the eta solid solution and determinations of the peritectic temperature and peritectic point for the reaction between epsilon and the melt to form eta. The liquidus of the eta phase was determined by thermal analysis and the solidus by the microscopical examination of specimens quenched from temperatures above and below the solidus. The temperature of the peritectic horizontal was obtained by thermal analysis and the com-position at the peritectic point was determined by extrapolation of the solid solubility boundary of the eta phase to the peritectic horizontal. The solid solubility boundary of the eta solid solution was investigated very carefully. Particular care was used to achieve equilibrium in the alloys at each temperature selected. The X-ray, electrical con-ductivity and microscopical methods were used in determining the solid solubility limits. The X-ray method measures the changes in the solvent lattice with increasing solute content and in this manner locates the composition of the alloy at which no further change in the solvent lattice takes place, the limit of solid solubility. The method of electrical conductivity measures the conductivity of the alloys of a graded series of compositions, whereby the solubility limit is indicated by a discontinuity in the conductivity-

Experiments resulted in a satisfactory laboratory method for restoring permeability to clay-containing cores damaged by fresh water. Clay contents of a number of field cores were measured, and permeabilities of plugs from these same cores were then deliberately reduced with fresh water. This damage is attributed to swollen and dispersed clays occupying the pore space. After damaging, a number of experiments were performed to meaJure the amount of damage and to establish some means by which permeability could be restored. The experiments included flooding the damaged cores with water-miscible fluids such as salt water, acetone, isopropyl alcohol and ethanol. Permeability was not successfully restored in these experiments. However, part of the damage was repaired by flooding with oil; when water was removed by distillation in the presence of immiscible fluids such as air or toluene, permeability was completely restored. This evidence suggested that swollen and dispersed clays could be collapsed to their original volume by strong interfacial and capillary forces. It was further postulated that the required forces could be generated by flooding the damaged cores with a solvent partially miscible with water. The flooding experiments were repeated using n-hex-an01 as the partially miscible solvent. Permeability was restored to five of six damaged cores and substantially increased in the sixth. A large fraction of the restored permeability was retained even after water saturation was raised to its original value with 12 per cent salt water. INTRODUCTION Sharp reductions in permeability often occur when relatively fresh water contacts clay-containing formations during drilling and workover operations. These permeability losses are caused by removing inorganic ions from the environment surrounding the clay, and consequent swelling and/or dispersion of clay minerals into the available pore space.' This phenomenon is generally termed clay damage, fresh-water damage, or simply formation damage; it causes large losses in current revenue by preventing oil wells from making their allowable production. Attempts to repair the damage and restore permeability by flowing salt water solutions or brines through clay-damaged cores containing montmorillonite have been unsuccessful.' This irreversibility is thought to result from formation of brush-heap, or edge-to-face, structures when the dispersed clay is flocculated. The brush-heap structures occupy much more space than the close packed domains present before damage.' One solution of the problem is to destroy the clay-water brush-heap and thus restore permeability. Because no satisfactory method existed for restoring permeability to clay-containing formations damaged by fresh water, the work described in this paper was under taken. The laboratory experiments generally consisted of deliberately damaging fresh cores containing clay and then attempting to repair this damage by various means. Results indicate that generating strong interfacial forces within the pore space of damaged cores collapses the clay brush-heap and restores permeability. These forces are most conveniently generated by flowing partially water-miscible solvents, such as n-hexanol, through a core. THEORY OF THE DAMAGE PROCESS The most common clay mineral groups known to cause permeability damage to formations are the mont-morillonites, kaolins, chlorites and illites. These clays are constructed of particles which can adsorb water on their surfaces and edges and, in the case of montmorillonite, between layers of the basic particle itself. This adsorption increases as water salinity decreases. At low salinities the particles disperse into the aqueous phase. When the clays present in the formation are kaolin, chlorite and illite, dispersion accounts completely for permeability damage to porous media. However, unlike the other clays, montmorillonite particles can imbibe water and adsorb ions between layers of sub-particles, or platelets. These platelets have net negative charges on their faces and are held together by exchangeable (or removable) cations such as Na and Ca decrease in ion concentration (salinity) in the fluid surrounding a particle causes migration of water into the clay layers and disperses the basic particle, while diffusion removes the original exchangeable ions from between the platelets. Once these ions are removed, the facing negative platelets repel each other, causing the montmorillonite to swell until, for all practical purposes, the individual platelets are dispersed. For this reason, fresh-water* damage is much more severe in sands containing montmorillonite than it is in sands containing other clays. Many investigators have shown that even trace amounts of montmorillonite can be responsible for marked reduction in the permeability of reservoir sands in the presence of fresh water." ." I HAVE previously demonstrated to you as well as I knew how in what way ores are treated and then how the separated metals are brought to their pure and ultimate limit of perfection by means of smelting and other artificial fires; all except gold, which remained incorporated in the silver. Because the method used for the others does not serve for this, and if indeed it did serve it would be a great labor and could not be done without a great loss of the thing, it is therefore necessary to proceed with the practice of another art if you wish finally to extract gold from the bonds of the intrinsic substance of silver, for it exists bound and scattered in this like the soul in the body of living creatures. In this, unlike the other works where you make direct use of the vigor of the fire, you use a substance that is like water, drawn by the force of fire from a very powerful composition of two materials. This is a very marvelous thing to consider as a liquor because of its powerful effects. It is made by artificial distillations and it has an acid property and the power of corroding and reducing into itself silver and any other metal placed in it, with the exception of gold. Nothing is apparent in it except a pure water. It is indeed a very ingenious thing for which we must be greatly indebted to that philosopher, alchemist, or whoever else was its discoverer. The silver that contains gold is put in this water, and from its former quiet state you will see it change as if forced to combat and breathlessly devour and consume that silver in itself and change it into water. This happens in a very short time and with very little help from the heat of the fire. All the gold that was united in the silver you will see like sand at the bottom, and when the water is taken off by decantation it will freely give you all the gold without any loss. Nor is it so ill-mannered as to fail to restore the silver to its place if you wish; and though it seems to have consumed and spoiled it as it was before, it returns it to you without loss. The fluorescence of scheelite has been an important aid in recent years in the discovery and development of scheelite deposits. The use of fluorescence of synthetic compounds in industry, particularly in advertising, also has expanded greatly during the past decade. As a result, a number of new and convenient units for producing ultraviolet energy have become available, which have led to a greater application of fluorescence in the study of minerals. Studies have shown that the fluorescent color of a mineral may vary: (I) with the kind and quantity of trace elements, and (2) with the particular wave length of ultraviolet energy used. The wave length is dependent first on the type of generating equipment used, and finally on the filter employed to remove the visible light that may be present. A number of so-called ultraviolet lamps are listed and described, together with suitable filters known to be available. Scheelite fluoresces brilliantly with wave lengths of 2200 to about 3000Å., but not with longer wave lengths. The most convenient and efficient sources of ultraviolet for scheelite fluorescence are portable and laboratory units designed particularly for use with scheelite. So-called ultraviolet light globes of the photo-flood type emit wave lengths too long to cause scheelite to fluoresce. Attention is called to the minerals that fluoresce in a manner similar to scheelite, which necessitates a check test by means of characteristic physical properties. Chemical tests are the final authority both for identity and content of tungsten in scheelite ore. Introduction Recent development and extensive use of fluorescent lighting make it unnecessary to explain what fluorescence looks like. The fluorescent light tube is in reality a mercury vapor arc, which generates ultraviolet energy. Coating the inside walls of the tube is a substance, called a phosphor, that converts the ultraviolet rays to visible rays of light. In a like manner, certain minerals will transform ultraviolet energy to visible rays of various colors. The phenomenon of brilliant fluorescent colors cannot be satisfactorily described or reproduced photographically; a display must be seen to be appreciated. Only a few years ago fluorescence was regarded primarily as a source of entertainment, chiefly in spectacular displays of specimens in museums. The brilliant fluorescence of willemite, a zinc ore mineral, at Franklin, New Jersey, was utilized quite early in checking the efficiency of certain milling operations. Fluorescence has been used extensively in exploring for scheelite, as well as in mining this ore, during the past 10 years. The use of fluorescence in detecting scheelite, an important tungsten ore mineral, is well established, and much success has attended this new method; scheelite is a very inconspicuous white to gray mineral in ordinary light, but it

COMSTOCK (author's reply to discussion *).-The discussion of this paper has been of such volume and interest as to constitute in itself a sufficient excuse for the paper, even though the paper itself may have been as much in error as some of its critics have maintained. Mr. Howard does not appear to realize some very practical facts that the opponents of his theory have advanced. Among these are: the coarsely crystalline fracture of the nucleus of a transverse fissure, so different from the smooth fatigue break around it; the occurrence of fissures in large numbers in certain heats or rollings of rails, while other heats or rollings do not develop them; and the much smaller proportion of transverse fissures found in rails rolled .from reheated blooms as compared with direct-rolled rails. A CERTAIN amount of interest has been indicated recently in the resistance to oxidation at high temperatures of iron-aluminum alloys (rich in iron). Hautman1 published a paper in which some interesting results are given. According to his paper, only alloys containing at least 8 per cent aluminum indicate a marked improvement in their resistance to oxidation. At about this aluminum content, however, alloys become brittle, which considerably reduces their commercial value. About two years ago the author performed a series of experiments, the results of which are presented here. A series of iron-aluminum-carbon alloys was prepared by melting electrolytic iron, aluminum and high-carbon iron alloy in an induction vacuum furnace.2 The list of these alloys is given in Table 1. Growing interest in pit crushing and conveying is evident from the recent many articles, technical papers, and new equipment development. Application of a pit crushing and conveying system is complex. Many factors, such as mine design, production scheduling, as well as initial and ongoing capital and operating costs must be thoroughly and realistically examined. This paper will address the fundamentals to be considered and review several approaches to developing a total system for a new and existing mine situation. The planning function will be outlined and operating and design criteria defined to interface the mining operation and the pit crushing conveying system.

An investigation of the relationship between properties of the elements and type of binary diagram formed was conducted. It was found that, for each type of equilibrium diagram, the factors for the size, valence, electronegativity, period, melting point, entropies of fusion, and sublimation calculated for each pair of elements cover a range of values. However, these factors show sufficient relationship to the equilibrium diagram so that the correlation of several of them can be used to predict the type of diagram formed, or at least limit the choice to only a few types. ThE goal of the metallurgist concerned with alloy development has always been to find a method that predicts the properties that can be obtained when a certain metal is added to another one. In most cases a qualitative predictiton of properties can be made if the equilibrium diagram is known. However, this means that for new metals the alloy development has to start with the experimental determination of the equilibrium diagrams. Because this determination is at least as complicated and time-consuming as the determination of the properties themselves, most alloy development has taken place by trial and error, and the study of the equilibrium diagrams has followed rather than preceded the creation of new alloys. Alloy structures and properties depend on the interaction between electrons and a complete knowledge of these interactions would permit prediction of structure and properties of alloys. Unfortunately direct measurement of these interactions is extremely difficult and somewhat doubtful and only properties that depend on them can be measured easily and with certainty. Study of the relationship between properties of the elements and equilibrium diagrams is not new. Besides the well known Hume-Rothery rule of the necessity of an atomic diameter fit within 15 pct for extensive miscibility in the solid, and the wide knowledge of the effect of such factors as size, electronegativity, electron-atom ratio on solid state features,"' work relating to liquid state and liquid-solid reactions can be found in the literature. This paper is the second of a series treating the relations of ores of the metals to igneous rocks. In the first paper1 the general problem was outlined and the normal downward changes in metalliferous lodes were briefly stated, with references to earlier papers treating the relations of ores to depths of their formation. The present paper by a number of examples illustrates the relations treated in the first paper. These examples are chosen chiefly from the larger mining districts because their underground developments are more extensive, but the same relations are shown in maps of scores of undeveloped areas in which the main geological conditions are nearly similar. Ecology of Metalliferous Deposits Ore deposits are divided into three groups: 1, Those formed by sedimentary processes; 2, those deposited by meteoric waters; and, 3, those formed in connection with igneous processes. The last group is the most important. It includes the magmatic segregations, which are igneous rocks in the strict sense, and the veins and related deposits, which were formed by precipitation in channels from solutions originating in cooling intrusives. These deposits may be divided into two groups: 1. Those related to intrusives as basic as diorite; and, 2, those related to intrusives more acid than diorite. The second group probably includes more than 95 per cent. of all lode ores. Nearly all of the ores of this group are associated with granitic batholiths or are in positions where it is reasonable to suppose that such a batholith, not yet exposed by erosion, underlies the area containing the deposits. Recent economic and environmental setbacks have not slowed Occidental Oil Shale, Inc.'s program aimed at the commercialization of oil shale. In fact, the firm expects to have a 795 MI (500C) bbl) per day production unit working by the end of 1976. The key to Occidental's ambitious program is an in situ method that extracts the valuable oil by retorting the shale in place. The process will require practically no water and will leave the spent shale in place underground. Additionally, all plant operations are to be located within the mine. These factors thus serve to make the operation attractive from an environmental viewpoint, in contrast to proposed conventional schemes which call for extensive underground mining, crushing and grinding at the surface, and construction of a massive surface retorting facility.

THE QUESTION of whether the production of oil should be limited to market demand has been constantly discussed during the last two years. Oil men, legislatures and courts have reached highly conflicting conclusions. Opponents of limitation to market demand assert that it is a scheme of the big purchasing companies to fix prices and to create a monopoly. Proponents, on the other hand, declare that such a limitation is necessary to prevent physical waste and that the effect on prices is merely incidental. A brief review of market demand legislation will disclose the confusion existing. The laws of Oklahoma,' prohibiting waste of oil and gas, specifically' authorize limitation to market demand as a method of preventink such waste. These laws and the proration orders based thereon have been upheld by the Supreme Court of Oklahoma, by several three-judge Federal District Courts, and by the Supreme Court of the United States.' Kansas has a similar law3 but no case has been found which discusses its validity. About a year ago the California Legislature passed a comprehensive conservation act, generally known as the Sharkey Bill giving authority to restrict production to an amount representing current requirements for use, taking into consideration oil and products in storage. This may be considered as equivalent to limitation to market demand. The Act was defeated upon referendum vote after a hard fought campaign in which it was charged that the Act would result in destruction of the independent operators.

Extensive gravity-meter surveys were carried out in the Sinai Peninsula and the Eastern and Western Deserts. Seismic and magnetometer work vas conducted on a restricted scale. The data collected justified wildcat drilling on structures located geophysically and/or geologically.
