Metal removal kinetics and metal ion selectivity in ion flotation were studied from a thermodynamic perspective. Surface tension data could be used with the Gibbs adsorption equation to quantitatively predict the metal ion removal kinetics in alkylsulfate-Cu systems. However, surface tensions predicted cation selectivity coefficients in the sodium dodecyl-sulfate (SDS)-Cu-Ca and SDS-Cu-Pb systems rather poorly, although the predicted order of the selectivity (Cu2+<Ca2+<Pb2+) was correct. Another thermodynamic selectivity model, which used the Grahame adsorption equation and a geometrical analysis, predicted cation selectivity coefficients that agreed very well with experimentally measured values.

Many technical professionals (tp)* desire to occupy upper level management positions. But career paths for most scientists and engineers do not extend beyond their specific disciplines. This is unfortunate. Our technical frontiers are expanding so rapdily that it is difficult, if not impossible, to make sound top management decisions without understanding the technical complexities involved. Technical professionals often are not considered for upper level management positions because they lack the managerial and interpersonal skills necessary to become successful administrators. You&apos;ve heard this before, but a key component of these skills is the ability to communicate. Technical professionals are often unable to communicate as well as they should with nontechnical professionals and nonprofessionals within the organizations that employ them. Communication is important for managerial success Communication is the network of interactions whereby knowledge and understanding are conveyed from one social set to another (Flippo and Munsinger, 1982). In order to be successful, managers must not only be "good" communicators, they must be "effective" communicators as well. Good communication occurs when managers are able to formulate and transmit their messages in such a way that they are received and understood. Effective communication goes one step further: It occurs when recipients accept messages as legitimate and respond to these messages in the manner desired. Before promotion into upper level positions, managers must have developed organizational skills (planning, decision making, organizing, and controlling) and interpersonal skills (directing, influencing, and motivating). Applying these skills effectively is difficult without a highly refined ability to communicate. Effective communication, then, is basic to managerial success. Nowhere, perhaps, has the importance of being able to communicate effectively been emphasized more than in Mintzberg&apos;s landmark study of managerial roles (Mintzberg, 1973). Mintzberg&apos;s results indicate that executives typically averaged 36 written and 16 verbal contacts a day. These contacts were both important and trivial. They generally occurred in a random manner. Time spent on each varied. Scheduled meetings averaged over an hour. Desk work, telephone calls, and unscheduled meetings required an average of 15 minutes or less. Why technical professionals have difficulty communicating Three reasons why technical professionals do not communicate well are: • The work motivational patterns and personal attitudes of technical professionals are not conducive to effective communication. • Students in technical professions are not encouraged by educational institutions to develop their communication skills. • Organizations do not insist that all technical professionals be able to communicate in the language of business. The work motivational patterns of most technical professionals are indicative of internals and high achievers (Hunt, Salisbury, and Whittington, 1968). As internals, they believe they control their own destinies. As high achievers, they believe that task accomplishment is a primary indicator of success. To ensure a task is completed in the manner desired, tp&apos;s attempt to structure and define work situations so they alone are responsible for results. TPs consider the task accomplished when they, and perhaps other tp&apos;s, are satisfied with the results. From the tp&apos;s perspective, the task may have been completed. From a communication standpoint, two other factors may apply. First, solving the problem required very little interaction (and thus, communication) with others. Second, the tp&apos;s, considering the task accomplished, have little concern for how their "technical" answers will be translated to nontechnical persons needing

China’s burgeoning economy is responsible for a major share of recent world mineral consumption increases. In addition to factors traditionally recognized in market economies1 and factors unique to specific commodities, Chinese consumption now plays a major and increasingly important role in energy and mineral markets for many commodities, such as aluminum, copper, iron and steel, and oil. China has the world’s second largest economy after the United States. And its long-term importance to the minerals markets is even greater than indicated by its gross domestic product (GDP), which is currently less than two-thirds of that of the United States (Table 1). This is because China’s rising standard of living is accompanied by rapid industrialization and urbanization. Its consumption of mineral materials for infrastructure development for its very large population is significantly greater per capita than that of such developed economies as the United States, the European Union and Japan. In other words, China’s per capita production is rising at a rapid rate and will probably continue to do so for many years.

An evaluation of a nuisance-emissions-discriminating smart mine fire sensor system was made in an operating coal mine. These field evaluations were conducted to determine the sensor system?s ability to discern nuisance emissions, such as diesel exhaust, emissions from flame cutting and welding operations or hydrogen gas from a charging station, from real fires and to compare the number of falsely reported fire alarms generated between the sensor system and a standard carbon monoxide (CO) monitor. The sensor system?s ability to operate successfully in the working environment of an operating coal mine was also evaluated. The smart mine fire sensor system consisted of four sensors whose data outputs were fused with the use of a neural-network-type computer program. Long-term trials were conducted in a haulage way, a belt entry, and a track entry. The system functioned successfully in the belt entry, in accordance with its developmental goals, where the sensor system even discriminated events not anticipated during development. It was not totally effective in the haulage way and track entry, though, due to a combination of significant diurnal air temperature variations, dust, and mechanically induced vibrations. Also, deteriorating rib conditions contributed to operational problems in the haulage way evaluation. In general, the smart mine fire sensor provided nuisance emissions discrimination and was shown to be a viable new approach for mine atmospheric monitoring, enhancing miner safety. This paper describes the in-mine evaluation of the smart mine fire sensor system and discusses recommendations for improving the system. Cross passageways between adjacent tunnels in passenger rail or transit systems may be used during train fire emergencies to evacuate passengers to points of safety in the non-incident tunnel. Rescue trains can be brought into the non-incident tunnel to remove passengers to expedite evacuation times as compared to walking along bench walls to the nearest egress stairs. In cases of multiple train emergencies, the required ventilation capacities can result in high pressure differences between the incident and non-incident tunnels. These pressure differences can make it difficult or impossible for a normal person to open doors of a cross passageway between adjacent tunnels. If opened, the velocity of the airflow through an open cross passageway can reach levels high enough to impede passenger evacuation. This paper describes the analysis of this problem for a sample rail tunnel. A ventilation concept that mitigates the problems of high cross passageway door opening forces and high velocities through open cross passageways is presented.

This paper discusses the process utilized by the Kiewit?Bilfiger Berger Joint Venture (Contractor) to select, design, and procure the largest mixshield tunnel boring machine (TBM) ever implemented in North America. The mixshield will excavate the 8,534 linear m × 6.7 m ID (28,000 linear ft × 22 ft ID) tunnel for the City of Portland Oregon?s, Bureau of Environmental Services (Owner) East Side CSO Tunnel Project. TBM selection was conducted under a preconstruction contract in which the Contractor, Owner, Construction Management Consultant and Designer collaborated on TBM selection prior to commencement of construction. When mining accidents occur, workers often become trapped and/or incapacitated. Current rescue operations can be dangerous and too slow to produce favorable outcomes. Currently, no method exists for rescue crews to scout ahead at critical times to assess the situation. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), through a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) sponsored program has developed the Gemini-Scout mine rescue platform. The Gemini-Scout was created to assist in underground mine rescue missions. It has been designed to go into potentially hazardous environments to assess the conditions (structural, air quality, temperature). In addition, it will enable two-way communications with potential survivors prior to human rescue teams being able to enter the area. The Gemini platform is a dual tracked-chassis design, which gives the robot excellent mobility in unstructured environments. The design includes a passive 2-degree of freedom joint between two identical bodies allowing for ±30deg of pitch and roll. In addition to the base mobility platform, the Gemini-Scout incorporates many other features to help it succeed in its underground mission. The electronics are mounted in explosion proof housings to ensure safe operations in hazardous gas environments. The platform is also able to operate in up to 18in of standing water with its elevated pan/tilt cameras for navigation. A four-channel video link and Two-way audio on the vehicle help to ensure located survivors can communicate with the robot operators. The platform also incorporates a Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved multi-gas sensor to monitor air quality. SNL believes that this technology is broad enough to be appealing to other first responders, such as police, firefighters and medical personnel. Gemini could easily be fitted to handle earthquake and fire scenarios, and it could provide relief in currently inaccessible situations.

Editor&apos;s note: information for this feature was taken from the published APCOM proceedings. Computer trends, with special focus on the reasons for computer use, grabbed the lion&apos;s share of attention at the 23rd worldwide meeting on the Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry (APCOM 23). However, technical topics did not provide the meeting&apos;s sole focus. The last-minute inability of certain former communist countries to fund the travels of a few scheduled speakers was a reminder that science does not operate in a void. As with all technical progress, the APCOM presentations raised interesting questions regarding interrelated organizational dynamics and political and socioeconomic issues. Consider US Bureau of Mines (USBM) research to design an expert control systems to "duplicate" an experienced, "good" operator during automated underground roof bolting. In his presentation of the project, Takach, Jr. stressed the importance of preserving the ability to switch from automatic to manual drilling control. From a technical standpoint, this allows the expert system to "learn" from a good operator. As important, he said, is that this flexibility decreases the human operator&apos;s sense of being replaced by the machine. The question arises: Which will loom larger in union minds, increased operator safety through remote opera¬tion or the potential for total operator replacement? Like any new product, computer technology relies on marketing to aid its acceptance and use. Consider, too, a decision support system, by Schena and Gochin, for mineral resource management in a developing country. The 2005 Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) convention continued the upbeat mood found in 2004. The global mining industry is booming due to higher commodity prices in nearly every sector. Other factors include low commodity inventories, China’s strong resource demands, the weak U.S. dollar, the very strong Euro, global uncertainties, an almost overripe investment climate for natural resources and the highest mining exploration budgets in seven years. Even unglamorous commodities, like iron, uranium and zinc, received copious attention in talks, the investors’ exchange, the core shack and in certain hospitality suites. The following impressions were gathered at the convention and enhanced by conference handouts and some abstracts that are available on the PDAC’s Web site, www.pdac.ca. At least 119 papers were presented, almost twice last year’s number.

The upper Arkansas basin has some of the greatest potential for geothermal development in Colorado. Over several summers, students conducted an investigation using seismic, gravity, and magnetics in order to help identify the large structures and basin fill associated with the Rio Grande Rift. Adjacent to Mount Princeton Hot Springs, near surface geophysics was conducted to help understand the faulting and fractures that act as a conduit for hydrothermal flow. The methods used included high frequency 3D seismic, magnetics, gravity, D.C. resistivity, and self potential. Throughout the Mount Princeton area, passive seismic, vertical seismic profiling, and well logging were also used to better understand the geology and activity of the region. The results indicate for the area northwest of the hot springs, a 40 to 50 m thick unconsolidated layer overlying the fractured granitic basement. The DC profile shows a deep geothermal anomaly of low resistivity which correlates with a positive SP anomaly in the same region. In the Chalk Creek valley, a shear zone extends from the north east to the south west, just south of the Chalk Cliffs. There appears to be an upward migration of the water through this shear zone which then flows along the porous sediments towards the south in this area. The deep seismic data collected in the center of the basin suggests that the depth to the basement is approximately 2000m. Also identified on the deep seismic are two major faults on the west end and two minors at the east end of the cross-section. An alteration zone is identified between the faults and a possible Precambrian northeast trending shear zone. The potential for developing an Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) near the center of the valley is high. Our geophysical results indicate a deep basin fill near the center of the basin providing high temperatures. The range front (Sawatch) fault is observed to penetrate under the center of the basin and is an attractive target for natural fractures.

The calculation of the dose to the bronchial epithelium, lungs and other body tissues from exposures to airborne radon and thoron daughters requires a knowledge of the pattern of deposition in the respiratory system and clearance from it. Exposure to radon or thoron daughters is measured in units of Working Level Months (WLM), which is independent of the aerosol particle size, the fraction of daughters that are attached to the aerosol and the degree of disequilibria between the daughters, and age and breathing rate of the subject. These factors will influence the deposition and clearance, and hence dose. It is therefore of interest to find the relationship between WLM and calculated dose as a function of aerosol size, unattached fraction, and disequilibria, and of age and breathing rate, and to define ranges for these parameters for which WLM is an acceptable measure of the risk. This presentation briefly reviews the two dosimetry models being considered by a current Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD) Working Group, and using these models, defines limits on parameters for which the WLM is applicable.

The City of Portland’s Westside CSO Project is constructing a deep tunnel system to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSO) from entering the Willamette River. Several kilometers of microtunneled pipelines connect the existing system to the new tunnel. The alignments encountered a variety of ground conditions, including fill, manmade obstructions (wood, steel piles, debris), fine-grained to dense coarse-grained materials, cobbles and boulders, all below groundwater. The phenomena of dripping into cavities (e.g. tunnels and drifts) within an unsaturated fractured porous medium under ventilated conditions is studied to improve estimates of dripping rates, drop sizes, and chemical composition of droplets that could affect the integrity of high-level nuclear waste packages placed in drifts. The sensitivity of dripping rates and water chemistry to ventilation is analyzed at various flow rates using analytical expressions linking flow on fracture surfaces to drop formation and evaporation. The model was tested using laboratory experiments involving machined aluminum slabs designed to represent a simplified morphology of a fracture face intersecting a cavity and using natural fracture surfaces from a welded tuff. Comparison with ten years of data on dripping in natural caves showed good agreement with model predictions. In particular, for low dripping rates, evaporation due to ventilation leads to larger drop sizes and alters drop chemistry by increasing the concentration of solutes in the drop relative to that in the water flowing on the fracture face.

The Liaoning Dahuofang Reservoir Water Transfer Project is an important development for the Department of Water Resources of Liaoning Province in northeastern China. The 85.3 km water conduit will transport water from the Hun River downstream of the Huanren Reservoir to the outlet on the Suzi River leading to the Dahuofang Reservoir. The additional water is required to sustain the growing cities of Fushun, Shen-yang, Liaoyang, Anshan, Panjin and Yingkou. The project is divided into seven contracts. Three TBM contracts comprise almost 75% of the work and the others are drill and shoot. The focus of this paper is about the creditable TBM performances achieved and some of the problems encountered by Chinese contractors; notably two having had no previous TBM experience.

In Australia during the 1990s, Zeni Drilling took on several demanding shaft boring contracts. This paper describes the safety, operational, technical and environmental advantages derived through the implementation of mechanized boring methods for two of these projects. The paper first describes a 3-meter (10 ft) diameter access shaft blind bored from an underground location to 440 meters (1,444 ft) deep for a gold mine in Tasmania. The construction of a 5.8-meter (19 ft) diameter, 515-meter (1,690 ft)deep ventilation shaft for a longwall coal mine in New South Wales is also described.

An on-line rheometer, suitable for use with slurries, has been developed at Michigan Technological University. This rheometer can be used with both Newtonian and non-Newtonian slurries, and produces complete shear-rate/shear stress curves which characterize the time-independent rheology of the slurry. The sensor utilizes the Hagen-Poiseuille equation and Boyle&apos;s Law to calculate the shear rate, slurry flowrate, and shear stress from a series of pressure measurements. The design of the unit allows the measurement sample to be continuously collected from operating process streams in the often-hostile on-line environment. The shear rate/shear stress curves can be used to conveniently calculate the apparent viscosity at any given shear rate, and also to measure any yield stress or other deviations from Newtonian behavior.

The focus of this research was to evaluate the synergistic effect of bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (CYANEX 272) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), diluted in kerosene, on the extraction and separation of Co(II) and Li(I) from synthetic sulfate solution. The results indicated that using a mixture of CYANEX 272 and D2EHPA was efficient in extracting and separating Co(II) from Li(I). The optimum ratio of CYANEX 272/D2EHPA was found to be 5:1, in which the highest separation factor was obtained (5973.23), and ΔpH0.5 was 4.10. Adding tributyl phosphate (TBP) as a modifier and increasing the temperature improved the metals’ separation rate and extraction efficiency. Thermodynamic studies were also carried out, and ΔH, ΔS, and ΔG values were computed, revealing the endothermic nature of Co(II) and Li(I) extraction by CYANEX 272/D2EHPA mixture. The conducted experiments for the McCabe–Thiele diagram showed the possibility of using two stages to extract over 99% of Co(II) and Li(I). Slope analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were employed to comprehend the Co(II) and Li(I) extraction mechanism using a mixture of CYANEX 272 and D2EHPA.

Two 610 m (2000 ft) long tunnels were driven through water bearing silts, sands and clays beneath the Sacramento River using a 4.59 m (15.1 ft) diameter Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPBM). Four sheet pile shored shafts were sunk with and without dewatering. The pre-cast concrete segmentally lined and grouted tunnels were driven down at 6% grades beneath the river flood protection levees, buildings, roads, a railroad and adjacent to a Freeway Viaduct. Details of the schedule, cost, shaft construction, TBM, tunnel construction, and installation methodology for the twin1.676 m (66 in) steel force main pipes and environmental constraints are provided.

Functional mineral pigments are used in large quantities in paint, paper, plastics, rubber, textiles, agriculture, and several other industries. U.S. consumption in 1969 is estimated at over 5 million tons a year, valued at nearly $150 million, as shown in Table 1. Originally extender pigments were employed only to lower cost. They were thought of merely as adulterants to replace more expensive prime pigments and binders. However, over the years their role has become better understood, and today their main functions are: - Increasing strength, stability, and service life. - Improving surface properties. - Enhancing application and processing properties. - Extending prime pigments. - Controlling viscosity and package stability - Lowering overall costs of the finished product. The principal minerals used as functional pigments are kaolin, ground calcium carbonate, talc, and asbestos. Other minerals include barytes, attapulgite, diatomite, mica, ground silica, wollastonite, and nepheline syenite. Several synthetic products, including precipitated calcium carbonate; precipitated, gel, and fumed silica; alumina trihydrate; and barium sulfate, compete with mineral products. They are more expensive, but often have more closely controlled particle size or other properties because they can be tailor-made according to the requirements. This paper covers only natural products selling for $10 or more a ton, approximately the lower limit for pigment grades. Data refer only to consumption in pigment applications. For example, such applications as filter aids for diatomite are not included. Key properties of the major mineral pigments are given in Table 2. It is important to note that these properties are primarily physical rather than chemical. In general, these products are sold to performance specifications for what they can do rather than on chemical composition specifications on what they contain.

It is known from soluble salt flotation practice that the K, Mg double salts of kainite (KClMgSO43H2O), and carnallite (KClMgCl26H2O) are difficult to float and must be converted to other salts such as schoenite (K2SO4MgSO46H2O) and sylvite (KCl) in order to recover potash values. The flotation characteristics of these double salts have now been confirmed in some detail by carefully controlled laboratory experiments with both cationic and anionic collectors. The experimental results are discussed in view of recent experimental findings regarding the flotation characteristics of simple salts, in which the flotation response was shown to be determined by the interfacial water structure and whether the salt could be considered to be a water structure maker or a water structure breaker. The same approach can be use to explain the flotation response of the potassium double salts ; schoenite, kainite, and carnallite. In addition, the sign of the surface charge of schoenite (K2SO4MgSO46H2O), was determined as a function of pH from nonequilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements. Schoenite appears to exhibit three charge reversals (CR) which can be explained based on surface hydrolysis reactions. The flotation behavior of schoenite is further considered based on solution chemistry calculations, electrophoretic mobility measurements, and microflotation results.
