Introduction It is estimated that nearly 40% of all the gold ever mined in free world countries has been produced by South African operations. There is concern that this immense productive capacity will soon decline. Such a decline could reduce world gold supply and lessen the ability of market economy countries (MEC) to exert the major influence upon the world gold market. This paper addresses three general issues concerning South African gold production: • How much gold remains to be recovered from the demonstrated resources of the 44 evaluated South African mines; • How long can production at current levels continue; and • What will be its cost. Table 1 provides production data on the world's 10 largest producers for the years 1971, 1981, and 1983. As shown, South African gold production declined significantly from 1971 through 1981. As of 1981, annual South African gold production had dropped by more than 311 t (10 million oz) in 10 years. Despite this, its mines still produced 656 t (21 million oz) that year, about half the world total. From 1981 through 1983, this trend was reversed. Annual South African gold production increased by more than 21.8 t (700,000 oz). The trend reversal was also evident in the US, Canada, and Australia. This illustrates the general, inverse relationship between gold price and gold production. In South Africa especially, as gold prices increased substantially during the 1970s, the average grade of ore mined (pay limit) was lowered as new, lower grade areas and materials were exploited. Gold production declined in volume. But gold revenues increased, and the lives of the operations were extended. The 1981-83 period was one of declining (US dollar-based, average annual) gold prices that resulted in increasing South African production as average ore grades were raised. South Africa currently accounts for 50% of world production (Fig. 1). Figure 2 illustrates South Africa's contribution to total MEC production in 1971 and 1983. Although South Africa's relative share of production has declined, it still represents the single most important source of new gold supply. In 1983, it supplied more than 65% of total MEC production. South Africa currently produces more than twice as much gold as the Soviet Union (ranked second in world production), and 11 times more gold than the US (ranked fourth in world production). There are many advantages to upgrading coal with dry jigging technology. The most obvious is the lack of process water, which eliminates the need for fines dewatering and slurry confinement. Dry jigging eliminates the clean coal moisture penalty associated with wet processing. Particulate emissions are virtually nonexistent due to inclusions of fabric dust collectors on all modern dry jig plants. Because of the environmentally friendly nature of dry jig plants, installation permits are often measured in days, not months. There has also been a fundamental advance in dry jigging efficiency. All of these advantages have renewed the coal industry’s interest in dry jigging. But air jigging is not right for every application. There are limitations due to particle size, particle shape, moisture and near gravity content. This article explores the evolution of dry jigging. It reviews parameters important for determining the suitability of dry jigging. It also compares historical performance data as measured by imperfection, against results from modern dry jigging technology. The article also presents data from modern dry jig installations.

Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling of a potential nuclear waste repository drift may be an important tool to estimate moisture redistribution caused by natural convection within the drift. To refine and support CFD techniques, a small laboratory cold-trap experiment was developed. Results from numerical modeling of the laboratory experiment show the sensitivity of the bulk air flow rate and average air temperature within the drift to several key parameters, including various boundary condition assumptions and surrounding porous media properties.

Mine Terex articulated dump trucks are working on a large restoration project of an abandoned open cast coal site in Blacklaw, central Scotland. The project is part of the construction of a 42-turbine wind farm complex. During the scheduled 18-month duration of the project, three 28-t(31-st) Generation 7 TA30 dump trucks and the six 36.5-t (40-st) TA40articulated trucks are estimated to move about 1Mm3 (1.3 million cu yd)of material. The trucks are working12-hour shifts, 5.5days a week.

Limonite is a general term for a group of amorphous iron oxide and iron hydroxide materials. It is considered as one of the very refractory iron ore types due to its wide variation in chemical composition, iron content, moisture content and easily sliming in the course of comminution. Iron grade of test sample is 25.48%, the iron minerals are mainly limonite; and the gangue minerals consist of quartz and feldspar in majority, secondarily silicate minerals. In this test work, high intensity magnetic separation (HIMS)-cationic reverse flotation and magnetic roasting-low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) tests were conducted on limonite ore. The test results show that the concentrate with iron grade of 50.97% and recovery of 68.50% can be obtained by HIMS-cationic reverse flotation technique; while using magnetic roasting-LIMS technique, the better concentrate indexes of iron grade of 60.36% and recovery of 89.71% are achieved, and the iron grade of tailing is only 4.42%. Therefore, the magnetic roasting-LIMS technique is a better suitable method for beneficiation of low-grade limonite ore. L. Alan Weakly, member SME, is a senior staff engineer, Exxon Co. Weakly chaired a Mining Engineering committee formed to solicit materials for six planned "personal skills" articles, to be used in ME this year. What follows are Weakly's introductory comments to the series. Upon graduation from college several years ago, I thought that I was sufficiently prepared to embark in my chosen profession. A short time later I realized that several years of on-the-job training was going to be required before I could use my technical training effectively. It never occurred to me that, professionally, I was seriously lacking in any other skills. My spelling could use a little upgrading, but this was not a serious deficiency. I have been very fortunate to have had two employers that recognized that their engineering professionals did lack other skills and made every effort to give them training to correct these deficiencies. The skills I am referring to are those in administration and interpersonal relationships. Most mining engineers and geologists receive very little, if any, college training in these areas. In addition, many companies do not provide this training and many mining engineers and geologists are unaware of their deficiencies. It is for this reason the subject of personal skills development is being introduced in Mining Engineering. The mining engineer or geologist can pursue one of two basic career directions, managerial or technical. In today's technically sophisticated society and highly competitive business climate, both orientations require administrative and interpersonal skills. Most of us are technically qualified and we continue to upgrade our technical skills. But many studies indicate that we, as a group, are significantly weaker in administrative and interpersonal skills than other professional groups. In addition, these studies indicate that engineers, in general, take longer to reach managerial levels and fewer do so. This series in Mining Engineering, then, should help readers strengthen and broaden their professional capabilities. In all industries, including mining and petroleum, economic analysis of potential investment projects is done to select the projects that will give maximum future value from the investment of available capital. Rather than looking directly at the future values to be generated by investing capital in alternate ways for economic decisions, evaluators usually use either rate of return, present value, annual value, a profit to investment ratio, or various break even analysis results to reach economic analysis decisions in evaluating alternative investments. Alternative economic evaluation techniques are used in industry to properly analyze the economic potential of various investment projects. "Discounted Cash Flow" analysis is the phrase commonly used to describe these techniques. Whether you want to analyze projects in mineral, petroleum, real estate, refining, pipe-line transportation, or any other industry, proper application of discounted cash flow analysis techniques enables you to fairly compare the economic potential of alternative projects as well or better than you can using any other project evaluation approaches. It should be pointed out that investment analysis generally involves more than economic analysis. Financial and intangible considerations sometimes are as important or more important to investment decision-making than economic considerations. Economic analysis refers to evaluation of the profit generating potential of projects, that is selecting which alternative projects will generate maximum future value possible from available investment capital. Financial analysis, on the other hand, relates to analysis of where money is going to come from to finance various projects. Regardless of the economic potential of a project, if financial analysis indicates that we cannot finance the project, it likely will be shelved for financial reasons even though it may be economically satisfactory. Many evaluators use the terms "economic analysis" and "financial analysis" interchangeably, but this author considers that to be undesirable. Commodity price down cycles are a fact of life in the mining industry. And companies pre-pare for them as best they can. Evenso, operations are still curtailed or closed during those cycles, profits shrink, layoffs are inevitable and many companies do not survive. However, one of the few good things that occurs during down cycles is the new, innovative exploration, mining and processing technologies that come about during hard times. To survive the lean times, the mining industry turns to improved technology to decrease costs and hold the bottom line. And, because mining is a cyclical business, each down cycle brings about technology improvements that carry over into the good times.

The Republic of Singapore’s Public Utilities Board is implementing the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System Project. The project’s deep tunnel component, 48 km of deep, large diameter sewer tunnels has been successfully completed (the works are in the defects liability period). Six International Design/Build tunnel contracts utilized eight Earth Pressure Balance TBMs ranging up to 7.23 m in diameter to deal with varied ground types ranging from deep soft clays to fresh granite. Numerous access/workshafts were constructed and using various support systems. This paper provides an assessment/overview of the tunnel contracts, tunnel excavation methods and equipment, and the shaft systems. Suggested enhancements to similar future projects are provided.

Durban Harbour in South Africa is one of the continent’s busiest ports however the harbor entrance is currently too small for the new generation of container ships. There-fore it is to be deepened and widened by the National Ports Authority in the near future. An existing immersed tube tunnel carrying major sewer, water and other utilities under the harbor first needs to be removed and replaced by a deeper 4.4 m ID ser-vices tunnel. Construction of the deeper tunnel saw the first use of a slurry machine in South Africa and was required to negotiate grades up to 20%.

Managers always look for systems with minimum hazards. The hazards create problems for performance of projects. The largest and most important hazards of working underground mine can be related to health, safety and environmental, because if one of these sectors be in hazard, maybe lead to close mine. Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) is a widely used quality improvement tool to identify the potential failure modes for measuring reliability of a product or a process. FMEA is performed by developing a risk priority number (RPN), which is the product of severity, occurrence, and detection ratings. On the other hand, with regard to uncertainty in the decision-making, fuzzy theory will be able to model this uncertainty. Fuzzy FMEA provides a tool that can work in a better way with vague concepts and without sufficient information than conventional FMEA. This article by using Fuzzy FMEA and based on HSE criteria evaluate hazards of Parvade No. 1 Mine in Tabas Coal Mine. The results demonstrate the most hazardous parameter is rock burst in this mine.

The Port Authority of Allegheny County North Shore Connector (NSC) Project involves TBM excavation of twin 690 m (2,240 lf) precast segment lined light rail tunnels through soil and rock under the Allegheny River and a narrow, downtown city street. The $435 M project is funded 80% ($348 M) by the Federal Government, 17% ($72.5 M) by the State of Pennsylvania and 3% ($14.5 M) by Allegheny County. Along the tunnel alignment are a historic building on shallow foundations, modern buildings on deep foundations, and one building constructed directly over the alignment. The project includes construction of twin 369 m (1200 lf) cut and cover concrete box tunnels and an underground station shell. This paper provides an overview of general site conditions, current project status and construction challenges for the Twin Tunnels and North Shore Light Rail Station.

The presence of enargite (Cu3AsS4) is problematic in gold processing because it is environmentally hazardous due to its arsenic content but also because it is double refractory causing both cyanide and oxygen consumption to increase. Selective leaching and treatment of the arsenic would prove advantageous prior to applying conventional gold leaching methods. The reactivity of enargite samples from Butte, Montana and Quiruvilca, Peru were spectroelectrochemically studied under alkaline conditions, pH range of 8-13, using Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Raman spectra of the surface were collected during and after voltammograms were potentially cycled in order to determine and compare surface species against theoretical EH-pH diagrams determined from mass-balanced thermodynamic calculations using StabCal software. Under slightly oxidizing conditions, covellite (CuS) peaks were found in a short matter of time, above ~100mV vs SHE for pH 9-13, suggesting arsenic leaching specifically occurred. At longer conditioning times, elemental sulfur was observed and tended to passivate the surface. The presence of sulfur suggests that copper was eventually leached. By operating above pH 12, under slightly reducing conditions near -300mV vs SHE, arsenic can be selectively leached as thioarsenate (AsS43-) or thiosulfate (AsO43-) without sulfur formation.

Decisions made during a response to a mine fire or an explosion greatly affect the final outcome. The safety of miners should be the primary concern with accounting for all of the miners the first issue for resolution. If miners have not safely evacuated from the mine, the last known location of the miners at the time of the event and anticipated travel routes are primary exploration areas. After the mine is evacuated, there are many very important decisions that must be made quickly and often under great stress. It is critical that the mine operator establish an orderly method to direct the mine emergency response. Designation of a Command Center, staffed with personnel charged with developing plans, is a common method of establishing control. Scheduling of key mine managers will be critical, since decisions must be made 24 hours a day and people working for extended periods with little or no sleep do not always make clear or cognizant decisions. Internal communications, passing information on to subsequent shifts, and external communications with families and media must be accurate and timely. Assembling resources for responding to the mine emergency is critical for an effective response, and pre-planning can pave the way to a successful recovery. Sampling mine gasses and accurately determining the composition of gas mixtures is a common tool used to develop response plans in all fires and explosions. It is essential that preparations for emergency situations are made well in advance of a disaster. Effective communications are essential for mine management to successfully respond to a mine emergency. This paper discusses some considerations which need to be addressed in directing a response to a mine fire or explosion.

A new class of polymeric dispersants for industrial minerals has been synthesized and evaluated. Currently available dispersants give initial low viscosities at high mineral loadings, however slurry viscosities can rapidly double or triple on standing over the first several days. The new dispersants give low initial viscosities that are more stable and maintain a lower viscosity for at least one month. The new dispersants are made possible by controlling the polymer molecular weight distributions during their manufacture such that essentially all of the dispersant is adsorbed onto the mineral surface, preventing depletion flocculation.

Energy efficiency has become significant due to cost and environmental considerations. Comminution and material handling have been identified as the two most energy intensive processes in mining. The objective of this work was to evaluate truck-shovel energy efficiency strategies using discrete event modeling. Energy audits and time and motion studies were conducted at a surface coal mine to acquire data. A discrete event simulation model of truck-shovel operations was built in Arena® and validated with the field data. The model was used to evaluate the effect of using a larger shovel, and optimizing truck-shovel matching on fuel efficiency. The results indicate that using a larger excavator increases the fuel efficiency of the operation while optimizing truck-shovel matching does not. However, using a larger shovel will lead to under-utilization of the shovel. This work shows the potential benefits of using discrete event simulation to model energy efficiency of mining operations.

Many concepts for the commercial production of deep-seabed manganese nodules have been studied since the 1970s. However, the bearing capacity of the deep seabed is not strong because it is composed of fine particles with high moisture content. So it is impossible to carry manganese nodules in the collection system. Therefore, the validity of continuous mining by riser pipe from the seabed to the vessel is highly appreciated. A continuous mining system is composed of mining vessel, lifting pipe, buffer system, transport tube (flexible pipe), and self-propelled mining robot. A conceptual diagram of this system is shown in Fig. 1(a). Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) developed a deep-seabed self-propelled mining robot called "MineRo" to collect manganese nodules in 2012 (as shown in Fig. 1(b)). In 2013, real sea experiments at around 1380 m depth were carried out to evaluate the collecting and driving performance of MineRo. However, we found that the roller in MineRo did not work well at times. To elucidate the problem, we analyzed the rheological characteristics between the bushing and drive shaft under deep-water conditions.

The 20th Century saw the modern mining industry enriched by one outstanding method of extracting of mineral resources called Borehole Mining (BHM). Mean while, despite its successful track record in wide ranging locales, few specialists are yet aware of this technology. The intent of this article is to introduce borehole mining to a wider spectrum of drilling and mining professionals. The BHM method is based on in-situ water jet cutting of rock mass. On Fig. 1 the schematic of the method is presented. The borehole mining tool 1 is lowered into the borehole 2 and high pressure water 3 is pumped down. At the bottom part of the tool, one portion of that water comes out through the hydromonitor nozzle 4 in a shape of water jet 5 and cuts the material 6 creating slurry 7. The other portion of high pressure water then comes to the hydroelevator 8 (jet pump, eductor) which produces a vacuum. When the slurry reaches this vacuum zone, the eductor sucks the slurry and pumps it up to the surface, where rock parts are separated from water in a tank 9 or a pond and clarified water is pumped down again closing the re-circulating BHM water supply system. The borehole mining tool is suspended on a drill rig tower 10 which allows the tool to rotate and move vertically along the borehole axis. While extracting rock mass, underground caverns (stopes) 11 are created. If necessary, compressed air 12 can be injected to the raising slurry flow to create an airlift effect. Also, a secondary agent 13 (such as oil, foam, etc.) can be added to the stope through the gap between the tool and the casing. As seen from the illustration, BHM is the remote mining method of extracting of mineral resources through boreholes by high pressure water jets.

Flotation’s earliest patent was issued in 1860. However, the process was first applied commercially in Australia until 1904, and in Montana in 1911. Major advances followed both in reagent treatment and in cell design, with resulting process improvements. Mechanical cells have seen the widest use and with the major increases in plant capacities (Fig. 1) their volumes have also increased (Fig. 2). In 1991, the principal use for the process was to produce copper concentrates for smelting. It was applied to 243 Mt (268 million st) of copper ore. The total of all ores floated that year was 426 Mt (470million st). In 1997, US mines produced 257 Mt (284 million st) of copper ores for flotation, yielding1.75 Mt (1.94 million st) of copper.

Several recent developments in fine screening technology have been implemented at the DuPont Starke, Florida plant allowing enhanced zircon recoveries while minimizing operator requirements and total operational costs. The total design concept came about through the efforts of engineers at Derrick Corporation (Buffalo, New York), DuPont Titanium Technologies (Starke, Florida) and Roche Mining (Carrara, Australia). The use of the Kelsey Jigs for zircon recoveries from the tailings stream requires two wet sizing functions in order to operate properly. The first wet sizing is required on the initial mineral slurry feed to the Kelsey Jig. This sizing is intended to protect the Kelsey Jigs internal screen basket from plugging with nearsize particles, thereby keeping production rates maximized. The second sizing function is intended to recover properly sized garnet ragging material, which inadvertently ends up in the tailings stream leaving the Kelsey Jig. The unique machine design developed by the three partners in this project incorporated both wet sizing functions (protection and garnet recovery) into a single patented high capacity wet screening machine fitted with patented screen surface technology. This screen surface technology allowed for high capacity slurry handling capabilities at separations as fine as 230 microns while experiencing no nearsize blinding and extremely long screen panel life. The high open area urethane screen surfaces utilized in the application typically last 20 to 30 times longer than stainless steel wire surfaces. The stacked machine design minimized total equipment requirements and screen footprint requirements, and reduced power consumption and overall installation costs.

Introduction Labor is the major cost element for most mining operations. Labor costs are continually increasing, both in nominal and constant terms. This is true in developed as well as less developed countries. There are two ways to control unit labor costs - labor costs per ton of ore mined. Replace labor with capital (increased mechanization) or improve productivity (reduce the labor force). Every miner is aware of specific inefficiencies at his or her particular operation. But the miner has no comparative measurement standards. So it is difficult to know whether these inefficiencies are major or minor. The miner may also be unaware of large-scale inefficiencies because ongoing labor practices may have caused management complacency. Met Research studied mining labor productivity. The firm collected pilot data by sending direct-mail questionnaires to 320 nonferrous mining operations around the world. The response rate was 27%, of which 78 operations provided full data on production and employment.
