Groups of up to twelve new recruits to the industry were subjected to climatic room acclimatization for either five, seven, eight or nine days prior to being tested for the degree to which they had been acclimatized. These tests were done at 32,2 0C (wet bulb) at a wind velocity of about 0,4 m/sec and the men worked for four hours at a rate of 215,6 kg m/min on one day and at a rate of 431,2 kg m/min on the second day. The results indicated that there is no significant difference between the degrees of acclimatization obtained by the eight- and nineday procedures which confirms the conculsions drawn in a previous report1. The eight-day procedure can thus be claimed to be perfectly adequate and safe. Decreasing the period of exposure to five or seven days would however, not be justified because of the significant differences in physiological responses that were observed on both test days between men acclimatized for these periods and those acclimatized for nine days. It is concluded that it would be unsafe to employ these shorter periods of acclimatization when underground environmental temperatures at which the men are to work, exceed 31 0C (wet bulb).

This paper describes and sets in context the commercially proven uranium extraction processes. It also discusses some of the technologies that are currently being pursued with the aim of reducing costs and overcoming a number of technical issues that are faced by process designers and operators. In doing so, opportunities for the transfer of extraction technology from other industries/commodities are identified. The key processing areas that are examined include: ?The influence of mineralogy. The type of uranium mineralization and the nature of its association within a particular deposit will have a major impact on process route selection. Uranium minerals are classified according to their influence on extractive metallurgy. As the uranium price has risen in recent times, so opportunities are increasing for the recovery of uranium from less conventional resources such as phosphates and fossil fuels. ?The opportunities for employing techniques aimed at reducing the capital and operating costs of the overall process such as heap leach and beneficiation. Preconcentration by screening, gravity separation and radiometric sorting can potentially reduce the mass flow to the downstream leach and recovery plants. ?Purification or separation of uranium in carbonate systems. While it is possible to directly precipitate uranium from clarified leachate, the presence of impurities such as vanadium, molybdenum and others may dictate that ion exchange or selective precipitation is employed. Advances have been made in other industries in terms of improved ion exchange equipment aimed at reducing resin inventories and hence costs. ?Separation in acid leach systems. Earlier developments included the use of combined SX-IX systems (Eluex or Bufflex) and the introduction of continuous countercurrention exchange (CCIX). Column SX has found a ready application to uranium in view of the rapid extraction kinetics. With the renewed interest in uranium processing, efforts are being redirected towards further development of resin-in-pulp (RIP) as a means of driving down capital and operating costs. ?Extraction in a chloride environment. Australia and Namibia are desert countries where good quality water comes at a cost. However, both have access to saline water from either the ocean or subterranean aquifers. The issues associated with operating a uranium extraction operation in such environments is discussed. ?Extraction from less conventional sources. Recent price increases for U3O8 have resulted in a number of companies examining the recovery of uranium from sources such as fossil fuels and phosphate deposits. Both of these areas were examined in the 1970s and 1980s and a number of approaches were commercialized. The paper reviews the extraction options.

A major mud push occurred on the 870 m production level, scraper drift block cave at Dutoitspan diamond mine in November 2011, during which it is estimated that more than 4 400 m3 of mud engulfed the west cave. The production level was successfully evacuated during the mud push with no loss of life or injury to personnel, thanks largely to mine employees being well trained in and adhering to on-mine mud rush evacuation procedures. All access to the west cave was lost as a result of the mud push. Clean-up operations are currently under way to regain access to the production level, to establish the extent of damage to scraper drifts and equipment, and to evaluate what remedial works may be required to resume production. The magnitude of the Dutoitspan mud push necessitated a detailed investigation into the key contributing factors leading up to the incident, which are discussed in this paper. Mud rush mitigation measures in place on scraper drift block caving operations at Dutoitspan, Bultfontein, and Wesselton diamond mines in the Kimberley area are critically reviewed. Recommendations are furthermore made for enhanced mitigation based on mud rush risk profiles derived for different production areas in these old scraper drift block caves. Gas samples were taken from a wide range of target areas on dumps arising from coal mining activities. Some of the dumps had largely burned out, some were still burning, some were in the process of rehabilitation, and on others rehabilitation was essentially complete. It was found that rehabilitation was very effective in reducing emissions to tolerable levels. Even incomplete rehabilitation reduced the CO2 emissions to less than about 1 kg/m2/a, whereas some unrehabilitated areas showed emissions of over 100 kg/m2/a. Some areas where there was active combustion taking place were also sampled, and they showed as much as 7 000 kg/m2/a, but the areas concerned were very small and their total contribution accordingly low. Analyses were also made for SOx, NOx, NH3, and CH4, but these were generally (and unexpectedly) at very low levels. The mines sampled represented 53 per cent of all surface coal mining activity. Accordingly the estimated total emissions were scaled up, to arrive at estimates of 1950 000 ± 350 000 t/a C02, 2040 ± 580 t/a SOx, 306 ± 85t/a NOx, and 31 ± 9 t/a NH3 for all surface mines. Methane was detected only from burning coal, and due to the difficulty in sampling, no reliable estimate could be made of these methane emissions.

It should be possible to use an oxygen probe to follow iron removal during converting, if local equilibrium is established between iron in the matte and the iron oxides in the fayalitic slag. The oxygen activity is expected to increase strongly as the iron content of the matte decreases (and the iron activity in the matte drops) while the iron oxide activity in the slag remains constant. To test this idea, oxygen activities were measured in synthetic mattes (made up of mixture of Cu2S, FeS and Ni3S2) when in contact with silica saturated SiO2-FeO slags, and silica and (initially) magnetite saturated SiO2-FeO-Fe3O4slags. The measurements were performed on laboratory scale at 1250°C, using an oxygen probe consisting of a stabilized zirconia electrolyte and Fe/FeO reference, and containing the sample in a silica crucible. Electrical contact to the matte was by means of a platinum wire. The measured oxygen activity was sensitive to the iron content of the matte, and insensitive to the composition of the gas atmosphere over the melt. The measured oxygen activity was generally close to that predicted by Fact Sage calculations. This indicates that such oxygen activity measurements could be useful to monitor iron removal during converting of nickel-copper-iron mattes.

Tata Steel Limited which is Asia?s first and India?s largest integrated private sector steel company, as part of its vision to grow in related industries is also undertaking the Titania project. The project will involve mining, separation of ilmenite and other valuable minerals from the inland heavy mineral sands deposit in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The raw material will be beneficiated to synthetic rutile, titanium dioxide pigment and ultimately to titanium metal. The recently concluded feasibility study revealed that the deposit under consideration has 10.4%of total heavy mineral content and 15.2% slimes of the size below 63 µm, over an average sand thickness of 6.9 metres. The presence of about 15% slimes in ROM sand coupled with scarcity of water at the project site complicates the slimes handling/disposal system, requiring the development of an innovative, efficient and effective system for disposal of slimes. Mineral characteristics of slimes revealed the presence of kaolinite clay, which poses its own challenges in thickening/dewatering of slimes. This paper outlines the detailed studies conducted, including slime characterization, settling and thickening characteristics, and ge-technical studies to arrive at an efficient and effective slime handling/disposal system, with a view to plant saplings on the mined-out reclaimed land with species typically suitable to that environment.

"I have been involved in the refractory industry for many years and at some time or another I have designed materials, tested materials, manufactured materials, installed materials, in fact I have done everything except actually chemically analyzed a refractory material.So I would not even begin to tell you how to analyse a refractory material. I'm sure everyone here knows more about chemical analysis than I do.However you could regard me as a customer with and perhaps the insights I have developed may help in putting the role of chemical analysis in the Refractories into perspective.For a start, let's take a step back and ask why we test refractories. The refractories handbook of the American Foundry Association gives four reasons:1. To determine appropriate specification.2. For quality control, to ensure conformance to specifications.3. To provide special property information not available elsewhere.4. For postmortem analysis to determine property changes in service and provideinformation that can point the way to better service.I want to discuss these points with regard to the role of chemical analysis and in particular the abuse of in house chemical analysis facilities. Mining fatality rates in many countries have not changed substantially over the past ten years. This demonstrates not only that there is an inherent risk in mining, but also that current approaches to improving safety need to be rethought. An analysis of productivity and fatality data in the United States, United Kingdom, and South 4frican coalmining industries shows that the impact of legislation on safety is overlain by other significant factors. Although improvements in safety and productivity usually occur together, the data warn that safety legislation can sometimes cause a significant reduction in productivity. Based on the data and experience considered, it is concluded that legislation should be aimed at creating a framework within which a positive attitude towards the implementation of more productive and safer mining methods, work practices, and technology can flourish, rather than attempting to enforce excessively prescriptive provisions. This later approach is even more problematic when safety standards and legislation are transferee from well developed to less developed countries. A legislative framework in which the mine manager is required to take al reasonably practicable measures to procure safe working conditions in accordance with mine-specific codes of practice is outlined. Within that framework, the value of adopting widely accepted standards is recognized. A performance-based external audit arrangement is outlined as a basis for ensuring that detailed attention is focused on those areas most needing improvement.

In this study, a newly developed plaster stemming method is studied and compared with the usual dry drill cuttings stemming method for surface blasting in mines and quarries. Drill cuttings are generally used in open pits and quarries as the most common stemming material since these are most readily available at blast sites. However, dry drill cuttings eject very easily from blastholes without offering much resistance to blast energy. The plaster stemming method has been found to be better than the drill cuttings stemming method due to increased confinement inside the hole and better utilization of blast explosive energy in the rock. The main advantage of the new stemming method is the reduction in the cost of blasting. In one series of blast tests, blasting costs per unit volume of rock were reduced to 16 per cent by increasing burden and spacing distances. Also, better fragmentation was obtained by using the plaster stemming method. Blast trials showed that plaster stemming produced finer material. In the same blast tests, +30 cm size fragments reduced to 5.4 per cent of the total, compared to 37.7 per cent in the conventional method of drill cuttings stemming. With this method of stemming, vibration and air shock values increased slightly due to more blast energy being available for rock breakage, but these increased values were small and under the permitted limit for blast damage criteria.

The past decade has seen a tremendous revival of the base metal industry in Africa, coupled with an unprecedented increase in the prices of base metal commodities in the last couple of years. The theme of the 4th Southern African Base Metal Conference, is therefore, ?Africa?s base metals resurgence?. This conference will explore the contributions made by the mining and metallurgical disciplines to the base metals industry in Africa. It will also investigate how the base metals industry in Africa can capture the maximum potential from the increase in base metal prices through research, innovative thinking, new ways of operating and project implementation. The conference will also consider the influence of Europe?s REACH programme on the base metal industry in Southern Africa. The conference will include a technical visit to Rössing Mine (Uranium) and will be followed by technical visits to Ongopolo (copper), Skorpion Mine (zinc) and Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation(zinc and lead). The conference, to be held in Swakopmund, Namibia, also confirms the commitment of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), to hosting a regular forum on base metals in the Southern African region. Swakopmund is an ideal conference venue for local and international mining and metallurgical professionals to be exposed to the latest advances in exploration, resource evaluation, projects and technological advances in Southern Africa?s base metal industry. Centrifugal pumps are the workhorse of hydraulic conveying systems but their performance is derated when viscous non-Newtonian fluids, such as pastes and/or coarse solids are present. The reduced performance for purely viscous Newtonian fluids may be calculated using techniques such as the Hydraulic Institute method, but similar deration for non-Newtonian fluids is not so easy to apply. As part of the AMIRA P599 project investigating high concentration suspension pumping, centrifugal pump tests were systematically conducted on a wide range of non-Newtonian coarse particle suspensions. Suspension sup to 38% v/v of coarse particles with mean diameters in the range of 1.1 < d50< 3.4 mm suspended in carrier fluids with dynamic yield stresses of 0 < t?< 17.2 Pa and shear thinning indices in the range 0.35 < n< 0.79 were examined. Techniques such as the Hydraulic Institute de-ration method require a characteristic shear rate to be assigned before application with a non-Newtonian fluid, and a method based on pump geometry, fluid rheology and flow rate is proposed. This method predicts the dramatic characteristic reduction in head at low flow rates that is often observed and explains why larger pumps are relatively insensitive to this form of head deration. Head deration due to the presence of coarse particles in non-Newtonian carrier fluids is seen to follow similar trends to that of Newtonian suspensions and often dominates the total deration procedure.

An International Ferro-alloys Congress, arranged by the Ferro Alloy Producers&apos; Association of South Africa, the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the National Institute for Metallurgy, will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in April 1974. The technical programme, occupying five days, will cover the following topics in relation to all ferro-alloys: 1. Burden preparation, blending, pelletization, handling, reducing agents. 2. Electric smelting furnaces-design, operation, management,- smelting optimization, shop practice, refractories. 3. Mineralogy, reduction behaviour, smelting reactions, slags. 4. Automation, Pollution control. 5. Applications, trends in comsumption, trends in composition specifications. There will be no parallel sessions. Papers in the above topics are invited; review papers will also be welcome. Proposed titles and abstracts in not more than 200 words should be submitted before the 30th of November, 1972, to The Chairman, Programme Committee, INFACON 74, Private Bag 7, AUCKLAND PARK, South Africa. The abstracts will be considered during January 1973, and papers accepted for the Congress must be submitted in final form before the 31st of July, 1973. The proceedings of the Congress will be published as a special volume. There will be a series of post-Congress tours to ferroalloy plants and other places of both technical and scenic interest. SYNOPSIS The feasibility of rejection of nitrogen from stack gas by recycling of top-gas with cold-blast 95 to 98 per cent oxygen is assessed. It is concluded that nitrogen could be removed to a level below 3 per cent of the stack-gas using recycled cleaned cold top-gas and 95 to 98 per cent oxygen produced by a single-column air separation plant with liquid-air reflux instead of liquid nigroten reflux. The partial pressure of carbon monoxide in the stack-gas could be doubled without top pressure and the deposition of carbon and reduction of iron oxides by the stack gas could be markedly increased. It is concluded that rate of stock descent could be doubled compared with present-day practice and an iron make of 4400 kg/m 2 of hearth area/hour may be attainable with a working volume of 129 m2/m hearth diameter by this method. Oxygen consumption is estimated at possibly 280 m2 (0.4 t)/t iron made and carbon consumption at possibly 280 kg/t iron. Power consumption for oxygen including auxiliaries is estimated at 304 kWH/t 100 per cent oxygen as 95 to 98 per cent gas. The air separation cycle due to Schuftan is discussed in some detail, and the components of a 1 600 metric ton/day separation plant are briefly discussed. The paper is a theoretical essay.

Bracken Gold Mine ceased mining operations during February 1993. The clean-up of the gold plant, which had already commenced in September 1992, was completed in January 1994. The mine had been in production since early in 1962 but, because of a decreasing ore reserve, increasing working costs, and a relatively low gold price, closure had become inevitable. The closure had been under consideration since August 1983, when the first estimate was made regarding the amount of gold that could be recovered from the clean-up operations. Until that stage, it had been accepted that Bracken would conform to the commonly accepted idea that 0.25% of the total gold produced by the plant would be recovered during the clean-up operation. This idea was dispelled when the initial estimates indicated that the gold recovery would vary between 0.049 and 0.095%. The actual figure realized was 0.036%, showing that there is no generalforl1ula for the calculation of the amount of gold to be recovered from such clean-up operations. During the clean-up operation, Bracken became an unexpected contributor to the State&apos;s Reconstruction and Development Programme by having al the mine and plant buildings purchased and converted into a community development centre. This shortene4 the time available for the clean-up, and several of the buildings remained intact. However, the foundations and sub-soils had been sampled extensively, and it is considered that no recoverable gold was left behind.

"To eliminate nozzle clogging during continuous casting of ship plate steel and reduce the calcium addition required, the composition of CaO-MgOAl2O3 inclusions in the liquid phase region must be controlled. Thermodynamic calculations using FactSage show that when the balanced Al content is 0.03 mass %, aCa in the liquid steel is 1–10 ppm, and aMg is 0.01–0.3 ppm; and when the balanced Al content is 0.06 mass %, aCa in the liquid steel is 1–30 ppm, and aMg is 0.05–0.9 ppm. The CaO-Al2O3-CaS inclusions can be controlled in the liquid region below 1600°C at aCa values of 5 ppm, 15 ppm, and 30 ppm, and the balanced Al content should be controlled in the range of 0.001–0.050, 0.005–0.250, and 0.010–0.50 mass %, respectively. Based on theoretical analysis, the refining slag composition should be controlled to 45–53 mass % CaO, 30–37 mass % Al2O3, 6–12 mass % SiO2, and 6–8 mass % MgO. Optimization of the slag system and steel composition can reduce, or even eliminate, the requirement for calcium treatment. The total oxygen content in the slab can be controlled to 15–21 ppm, with typical micro-inclusions ??10 ??m in size, with compositions in the CaO-Al2O3-MgO and CaO-Al2O3-CaS systems. Introduction With the rapid growth in steel output in China and the changes in the macroeconomic environment, competition in the steel industry has become more intense. The technology for economical cleaning of high-grade steel is important for improving product quality and reducing production costs. However, the functions of refining equipment have not been fully taken into consideration, and the combination of refining methods has not been optimized completely. These problems have become a bottleneck, restricting modern steel enterprises from developing an economic clean steel production process. Ship plate steel produced by the converter long process has been selected as the example in this study. The composition of the steel is shown in Table I. This steel is a high-strength low-alloy steel for rolling media and heavy plates, mainly used for ocean-going vessels and other steel structures. The carbon content in the steel is far from the peritectic point, and the crack sensitivity of the slab surface is weak, so impurities and gas content are strictly limited. Therefore, the process route BOF (basic oxygen furnace) – LF (ladle furnace) – CC (continuous casting) needs to be studied."
