Despite its growth over the years, necessitating ever¬larger office accommodation, the Gold Fields group changed its head office address in Johannesburg only twice in 94 years. The first move was at the turn of the century, from the then select suburb of Doornfontein to the corner of Fox and Simmonds Streets. The second move was in the thirties, from that address-now the Reserve Bank building-to the well-known address of 75 Fox Street. With the advent of the first mines of the West Wits Line by the end of the thirties, 75 Fox Street proved too small, and the eastern section of the Commissioner Street side of the present head office was added on. In the fifties, when space once more became a serious problem, the old Exploration building was purchased and demolished, and the present west wing on Commissioner Street was built on the site. In the early seventies, cramped conditions again made life difficult and, despite a reorganization of the interior layouts, the need for expansion remained critical. Eventually, the adjacent Hollard Place and parking area became available, and plans for an extended new building complex could he considered. The building project was

The Colloquium was held at Mintek on 4th June, 1986, and attracted approximately 240 delegates.

The International Colloquium on Developments in Froth Flotation, which replaced the Annual University of Cape Town (UCT)/University of Stelenbosch (US) Minerals Processing Symposium, was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel in Gordon's Bay on 3rd and 4th August, 1989. The Colloquium attracted 150 delegates from the mining, metallurgical, and chemical industries, including 9 from overseas.

Sampling and metallurgical testwork during various phases of engineering studies is of paramount importance for a robust processing plant design. When developing a process flowsheet, risks in achieving desirable financial outcomes are minimised by ensuring that appropriate sampling and adequate metallurgical testwork support the engineering and cost estimation at each phase of project development. The quality and type of samples used for metallurgical testwork are just as important as the metallurgical testwork itself. The key characteristic required of any sample is that it represents some defined portion of a mineral deposit. Representivity should consider the spatial orientation, lithology, alteration, degree of oxidation, mineralogy, and competency of the ore such as hardness and abrasiveness. Statistically representative sampling procedures and an appropriate metallurgical testwork program should be designed to bring metallurgical understanding up to feasibility study standard and to give a basis for process plant design. The authors have observed that the quality of sampling and quantity of metallurgical testwork carried out during the various phases of engineering studies are often insufficient to truly support a robust plant design. Some designs are based on benchmarks of apparently similar ore bodies or rely on buoyant metal prices supporting cash flows until rectifications can be implemented. Compared with sinusoidal oscillation, non-sinusoidal oscillation enhances the ability to control waveform and meets different oscillation requirements by adding an independent parameter, which is the key technology for high-efficiency continuous casting. A new waveform of mould non-sinusoidal oscillation is proposed in this paper, that is, a velocity waveform that is composed only of straight lines and parabolas, which not only has good dynamic characteristics, but also further enhances the feature of non-sinusoidal oscillation. Compared with sinusoidal oscillation, the negative strip time is reduced by 15.9%, the maximum negative strip velocity difference is increased by 38.3%, and the maximum positive strip velocity difference is decreased by 27.8%. The formulas of oscillation process parameters can be clearly deduced, and the isoplethic curves of oscillation process parameters when multi-parameter simultaneously changes are drawn. The negative strip time decreases as the modification ratio, frequency, and casting speed increase, but increases as stroke increases. In order to maintain the stability of negative strip time, an oscillation synchronous control model for optimising oscillation basic parameters was developed. Through practical application, the mean oscillation mark depths decreased by 10.1 μm and the flux consumption is increased from 0.37 kg/t to 0.45 kg/t in the non-sinusoidal oscillation model, which meets the requirements of normal production.

This paper describes research done to remove apatite (phosphorus) from hematite ultrafine (70% finer than 25 micron) concentrate, recovered by electromagnetic separators at the FST Tailing Recovery Plant located in Chadormalu Iron Ore Complex through reverse froth flotation. As a result, iron and phosphorus content in magnetic concentrate (flotation feed) were 53.52% and 0.58%, respectively. Therefore, to increase the Fe content and decrease the P content of the sample, reverse flotation tests were applied. Chemical reagents used in this research consisted of sodium silicate as a depressant, sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate as pH regulators, Alke & Dirol as fatty acid collectors and MIBC as frother. Process parameters including dosages of collectors, depressant and frother, preparation times of depressant and collectors, steps and time of frothing and pH range were selected. After doing flotation tests, in optimum condition, dosages of collectors were 1200 g/t, depressant 1200 g/t, pH in the range of 9.5 to 10, preparation time of collectors in the first step was eight minutes and at the other steps, four minutes; the number of frothing steps 4 and frothing time in each stage was three minutes. In this case, it was observed that the amount of phosphorus in the final concentrate was reduced to 0.05%, the Fe content increased from 53.52% to 61.66% and the Fe recovery achieved was 82.21%. In a pulp environment, the surface properties of magnesite and dolomite tend to be similar, due to the re-adsorption of dissolved calcium species, which makes the flotation separation difficult. In this paper, the chelating reagent EDTA is introduced to eliminate the adverse influence of the calcium species and to restore the selectivity of magnesite-dolomite separation using sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) as a depressant. Flotation experiments confirm that the recovery of magnesite improves significantly in the presence of EDTA. Zeta potential experiments confirm that the negatively charged EDTA4+ and HEDTA3+ species can form soluble and stable chelates with positively charged Ca2+ and Ca(OH)+ species preventing their adsorption on the magnesite surface. Adsorption measurements prove the addition of EDTA can decrease the adsorption of depressant SHMP on the magnesite surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements further confirm the transformation from the surface of magnesite to dolomite in the presence of calcium ions, and the possible adsorption mechanism of EDTA and SHMP on the magnesite and dolomite surface. "The hydrofluoric acid (HF) industry in South Africa uses normalized mild steel (SA 516 Gr 70) for the storage and distribution of its technical-grade product (70% HF). The technical-grade acid is split from the anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (AHF) product during distillation just after HF is produced, in a stainless-steel-lined kiln, from the reaction of calcium fluoride (CaF2) with sulphuric acid (H2SO4). Uniform corrosion of the storage tanks is mitigated during commissioning by contacting the steel with 70% HF. A corrosive reaction takes place (2H+ + 2F- + Fe - H2 + FeF2) to form scale inside the tank which diminishes the attack of the steel by fresh HF, thus prolonging the service life expectancy of the vessels. This iron fluoride scale in the vessel grows continually, resulting in corrosion of the vessels continuing at a predictable rate (approx.0.5 mm/a) since the first commissioning of the tanks at Necsa in 1993. In early 2012, an increase in the average corrosion rate of the tanks to 3 mm/a measured at and below the liquid band in the storage vessels was noted. Three months later the corrosion rate had increased to 30 mm/a, just before the first leak from the tank was detected. The tanks were decommissioned shortly afterwards and an investigation revealed that the rapid corrosion was due to the presence of increased levels (>50 ppm) of nitric acid (HNO3) in the tanks, which attacked the fluoride layer protecting the steel.The oxidation characteristics of high concentrations of HNO3 with low concentrations of HF on stainless steel surface treatment are well documented. The effects of low levels of nitric acid on the corrosion of steels in sulphuric acid are also known, but no suitable published data currently exists on corrosion by high HF concentrations with low HNO3 concentrations. Establishing the rate and mechanism of corrosion by HNO3 (0.1 to 1%) in 70% HF is currently a high priority for the HF industry in South Africa and will become increasingly important in the near future due to depleting fluorite reserves and cheaper, but less efficient, processes producing H2SO4 with higher impurity levels, which were not anticipated in the original plant design. The aim of this study is to simulate the corrosion conditions in the plant on a laboratory scale in order to establish the corrosion characteristics of the steels used in the HF plant, which are increasingly exposed to the HNO3 impurities that tend to concentrate in the final technical-grade HF acid product."

The Annual General Meeting of the Institute was held in Kelvin House, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, 30th August, 1972. Professor D. D. Howat (President) was in the chair. There were also present sixty-two Fellows, twenty-four Members, two Associates, three Students and eighteen Visitors, making a total of one hundred and nine. The President declared the meeting open at 4.05 p.m. OBITUARIES The President: It is my sad duty to announce the death of six members of this Institute. The first of these is Dr A. J. Orenstein, Honorary Life Fellow, who joined the Institute in 1916 and died on Seventh July. Dr Orenstein became almost a legendary figure in Medicine as a result of his work in the control and elimination of malaria during the digging of the Panama Canal and I believe he was actually engaged working until four days before his death. The other members who have died are: F. Meyer, died on 8th June; S. D. Loxton, Fellow, died on 13th May; J. Innes, Fellow, died on l0th January, 1970; O. B. Prentis, a Member, died on 4th June, and J. Brits, Associate, died on 27th June. As a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased and in sympathy with the bereaved may I ask you to rise and observe a few moments silence. WELCOME TO VISITORS 'On behalf of the Council, may I say how delighted we are to have such a splendid gathering with us on this our Annual General Meeting. In addition to our own newly appointed Minister of Mines, we are also honoured by the presence of the Minister of Mines of Rhodesia, Mr I. B. Dillon. I think not even our oldest members can recall an occasion on which two Ministers of Mines were present at a meeting of the Institute. It is a particular pleasure to welcome them this afternoon. I am happy to say that Minister Koornhof is an Honorary-Vice President of the Institute, and Minister Dillon is an Honorary Member. The presence of your goodselves, gentlemen, with us this afternoon, I am sure underlines the great significance which we believe both countries attach to the economic exploitation of the vast mineral resources of Southern Africa. For over 70 years, this Institute and its members have been making their contribution to this great task of mineral exploitation, and we feel that your presence with us today, is a token of the confidence of your governments in what this Institute and its members have been endeavouring to do. Also present with us today, is Mr R. C. J. Goode, President of the Chamber of Mines, and Honorary President of this Institute. I was going to say I welcome Mr Goode, but it is rather difficult to welcome a man to his own home, and this is the case with Mr Goode. He is a very distinguished and a very recent past president of this Institute and he remains now, as he has been for as long as I can remember, one of our most active and valuable members. This I think, ladies and gentlemen, is the second rather unique feature of this occasion this afternoon, because no one else can recollect an occasion on which the President of the Chamber of Mines was also a past president and an active member of our Institute. A special word of welcome, Mr Goode. Mr Tommy Gibbs, our Government Mining Engineer, is in a somewhat similar position as he is also a member and an old and valued friend of our Institute, - welcome to you, Mr Gibbs. Mention I think, must be made of the fact that we are very glad to have with us Dr A. J. A. Roux, President of the Atomic Energy Board, and Mr Stanley Craib, President of the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies. Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of seventeen and the standing committees held 45 meetings. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of expenditure over income of R4,608 compared with R2,124 last year. This deterioration can be attributed largely to two important factors, namely an increase in secretarial fees of RI, 789 and an increase in the loss on the Journal from R2,343 to R3,508. In addition, our contribution to the expenses of the Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers increased by R607 from R549 to R1,156. The increase in secretarial fees is partly due to our increased demand for services and partly to increased salaries. In order to maintain its essential services it has been necessary for the A.S. & T.S. to increase salaries in order to keep pace with commerce and industry. With regard to the Journal, we did not expect immediate dramatic results from the changes that were effected as from the beginning of last year in the arrangements for publication. However, the improvement has been even slower in materialising than we expected. This situation is being watched carefully and we will not hesitate to make further changes if necessary. It became clear early in the year that the financial position was deteriorating and your Council decided that it was essential to meet the situation by raising subscriptions and entrance fees. At the same time it was decided that there are no grounds for a distinction between Town and Country members and that in future the scale for the compounding of subscriptions should be based on anticipated future membership, rather than past membership. These changes have had only a minor effect on the accounts under consideration. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R132 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4,338. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures decreased during the year from R13,059 to R6,567, while accumulated funds now amount to R17,959 compared with R22,567 last year. It will also be noted that we are holding R25,844 on behalf of the Symposium on Opencast Mining. MEMBERSHIP Twenty-eight Fellows, twenty-four Members, seventeen Graduates, twenty-five Associates and twenty-seven Students were elected during the year. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE A committee was established to organise a drive for membership as it was felt that there are numbers of persons in our mining and metallurgical industries who are not yet members but who qualify for membership. Members of the committee were allocated responsibility for campaigning in sections of industry and for publicising the aims, objectives and advantages of belonging to the Institute.

Heavy mineral deposits often contain relatively high levels of radioactive elements (thorium and uranium in particular).It is difficult to obtain clean separation of ilmenite and monazite (the main impurity mineral containing radioactive elements), and physical intergrowths of the two minerals are, in fact, not uncommon. As a result, ilmenite concentrates obtained from such deposits often contain high levels of thorium and uranium. Because of the large negative free energies of formation of ThO2and U3O8boththorium and uranium report to the slag during smelting and if an ilmenite concentrate contaminated with monazite is used to make high titania slag, the concentrations of these elements in the slag end up about 40% higher than in the ilmenite feed. Previous work, patented by RGC Mineral Sands Limited, and subsequently confirmed by Mintek, showed that radioactivity may be reduced by roasting an ilmenite concentrate with borax at 1000°C to 1100°C and leaching it with hydrochloric acid1. It is evident that the cost of an ilmenite roast/leach process will be high and there may be economic benefits in removing the radioactive elements from the slag instead (the volume of slag to be treated is smaller than the volume of ilmenite feed). To remove radioactive elements from the slag it is necessary to know how these elements occur in the slag. Inother words, the distribution of uranium and thorium between the various oxide, silicate and metallic phases in high titania slag must be determined. Once the deportment of thorium and uranium between the various phases ha sbeen determined, an appropriate process for slag purification can be developed. Test samples High-titania slag was prepared in a pilot-scale DC furnace from ilmenite concentrates with different levels of uranium and thorium. Subsequently, ten slag samples representing a range of compositions were selected for bulk chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy and micro-analysis. The samples were crushed to a maximum particle size of 1 mm and from each sample a 20-kg batch was riffled out for analysis. Bulk chemical composition Chemical compositions of the samples selected for test work are given in Table I. TiO2, Al2O3, SiO2, MgO, MnO, FeO and V2O5were analysed by ICP-OES, Na2O, CaO andCr2O3by atomic absorption spectroscopy and U and Th by XRF (the XRF detection limit for U and Th was around 4 ppm). The ?B? series has a higher silica content than the others as a result of small silica additions that were made during smelting. All samples have elevated alumina levels as a result of furnace refractory contamination during smelting. As expected, there is an inverse relationship between the concentrations of TiO2and FeO in the samples (Figure 1).The TiO2and FeO levels are similar to the levels found in industrial slags2. Extreme conditions of reduction under which reduction of more ?refractory? oxides (e.g., chromia, magnesia, silica, alumina and even urania and thoria) might take place were not explored in the study. Note that BB1and BBB1 contain more than 7% combined silica and alumina (SiO2as a flux addition during smelting, and Al2O3from refractory contamination) and they do not fall on the general trend defined by the other samples. The U and Th concentrations of sample E2 is noteworthy. In the preparation of slag E2, monazite concentrate was added to the ilmenite to increase the concentrations of radioactive elements in the slag. This was done primarily to facilitate the detection of Th and U during the phase chemical characterization of the slag. The magnetic field characteristics due to electromagnetic stirring in the secondary cooling zone of an extra-thick slab during continuous casting are numerically determined using Maxwell's equations, with particular emphasis on the distribution of magnetic induction intensity and electromagnetic force, as well as the influence of process parameters on the magnetic field. The orientation of the electromagnetic force is the same when the electromagnetic stirrers at the 30° and 60° posistions of the arc-shaped slab are powered in the same direction; otherwise, the orientation is opposite. The magnetic induction at the centre of the section of the stirrer's central axis at the 30° positio, as well as the current, frequency, and fitting formulae, are as follows: B = {0.075I.(1/A)-0.3} mT and B = {-1.75f.(1/Hz)+22} mT. The electromagnetic force and current fitting formula at the central point of the B-B section is F = {0.03168I2.(1/A2)-03.762I.(1/A)+326.7} N/m3, and the fitting formula of electromagnetic force and frequency at the centre point is divided into two segments. The first takes the form of a parabola: = {-21((f-4.3).(1/Hz)2)+970} N/m3, and the second segment is negative linear: F = {-1.65f.(1/Hz)+51.5} N/m3.

The near-surface wave attenuation factor k (kappa), which describes the attenuation of seismic waves with distance in the upper 1–3 km of the Earth, was determined for the Far West Rand gold mining area using seismic data recorded by station Parys (PRYS) of the South African National Seismograph Network. Twenty micro-events in the magnitude range 0.7 ? ML ? 1.8 for the period 1 July to 15 November 2015 were analysed. For the analysis a 10-second window for the S phase portion of the vertical component seismogram was selected. The result was an average k = 0.048 ± 0.014 s, which is much higher than for a stable continental region where k = 0.006 s. This is because the assumed Brune source model is inappropriate for describing mining-related events that often have moment tensors with a volumetric (implosive) component. The average k was calculated to be 0.098 ± 0.038 s for explosions of a similar magnitude. This higher value derived for mining-related k may be employed as a means of correcting the Brune source spectrum to calculate seismic moment as well as corner frequency for events in the mining areas of South Africa.

"SynopsisSilicon carbide nanopowders were produced using a microwave-induced plasma process operating at 15 kPa absolute and at atmospheric pressure. Methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) served as precursor, due to its advantageous stoichiometric silicon-to-carbon ratio of unity, allowing it to act as both carbon and silicon source. Argon served as carrier gas, and an additional hydrogen feed helped ensure a fully reducing reaction environment. The parameters under investigation were the H2:MTS molar ratio and the total enthalpy. The particle size distribution ranged from 20 nm upwards, as determined by SEM and TEM micrographs. It was found that an increase in enthalpy and a higher H2:MTS ratio resulted in smaller SiC particle sizes. The adhesion of particles was a common occurrence during the process, resulting in larger agglomerate sizes. SiC layers were deposited at 15 kPa with thicknesses ranging from 5.8 to 15 µm.IntroductionIt is well known that methyltrichlorosilane (CH3SiCl3 or MTS) decomposes to form silicon carbide (SiC) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) as shown in Equation [1]. With the advent in recent years qf mechanization in deep-level gold and platinum mines, large quantities of rubber was are being used on both production and support vehicles. Conditions in these types of mines are extremely harsh and, as a result, we performance is significantly lower than in other types of mining such as open-cast base metal mining, where more favourable conditions prevail. Various options are available to the user to reduce tyre costs, including the use of retreads, the filing of tyres, and the repair of damaged tyres. While these methods may be generally successful in open-cast conditions, their use in deep-level mining needs to be carefully evaluated for each particular set of conditions. A basic requirement for any evaluation of we costs is the availability of reliable data on tyre performance and, for this reason, it is essential that proper tyre records are maintained This paper reviews the performance of tyres in deep-level gold and platinum mines in Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company, Limited (JCI) over a period of about 8 years, and shows how the costs of retreading and tyre filing can be evaluated in practice. It also discusses the cost implications of repairing damaged tyres.

The use of face conveyors in gold mines by N. C. JOUGHIN. B.Sc. (Eng.). Ph.D. (Wits) (Member) and A. C. BUCKMASTER; M.A. (Cantab.) A mechanized stope-cleaning system has been developed around an armoured face conveyor, which was tested on the surface and in two underground trials. In the second underground trial, an average face advance of 8,5 m per month was obtained with a labour productivity of 27 ca/worker/month on a two-shift blast cycle. Two new face cleaning systems have been built, each incorporating an armoured face conveyor, a loading plough, a collapsible self-advancing barricade, and an integral roof-support system. These are about to be tested. A new type of reciprocating flight conveyor is being developed for stope use. This is cheaper, lighter, and more compact, and exhibits better wear characteristics, than an armoured face conveyor. In the early stages of the trials, this conveyor frequently achieved a singleshift blast cycle. It should be possible to achieve face advances of up to 40 ca/worker/month with a consistent one-shift blast cycle. The use of drill rigs and a self-advancing roof-support system would improve the productivity to over 50 ca/worker/month.

Trackless mining at LKAB, Sweden by L HERMANSSON (Visitor) Because the usual means of transporting men and material to the working sites was time-wasting and uneconomical, inclined subways were installed in the Kiirunavaara Mine that permitted the access of rubber-wheeled vehicles to all underground working sites. Men and material could now be transported direct to the working site with no reloading. An increase of 8 to 12 per cent in underground productivity has been obtained by the use of this new transportation system. Rubber-wheeled vehicles are also used in development, production drilling, and loading. In December 1958, the management of the Luossavaara Mine decided to cut the costs of waste-rock haulage. The system of waste transport was the conventional one of shuttle car, rail haulage, and skip hoisting. After consideration of other methods, it was decided to re-equip the mine completely for a system of trackless transport. Results show that mining costs per ton of ore were reduced by 27 per cent, and mining costs per ton of waste were reduced by a spectacular 80 per cent. The new system has proved to be more flexible, and ore grading has been simplified since there is no longer any mixing in ore passes and chutes.
