Several possible physico-chemical properties of composite electrodes for oxygen evolution are presented to describe experimental data for which a mathematical model had been developed. On this basis, local electrical and electrochemical properties of a composite electrode were investigated with conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). It could be shown by CAFM measurement that the boundary between matrix and catalyst particles seemed to have special advantageous electrical properties. The SECM measurements showed the presence of mass transport phenomena with increased surface concentrations, whilst the thickness of the Nernst diffusion layer was very small. An intermediate was detected and assigned to be hydrogen peroxide. From all species involved in the oxygen evolution reaction (H2O2, H+ and O2), it was concluded that local active spots exist on the electrode on which hydrogen peroxide reacts to oxygen and protons. A two?step two-material process was suggested to explain the whole oxygen evolution mechanism.

The main purpose of this paper is to introduce the main strategic restructuring aspects of companies that are directly (coalmines) or indirectly (companies that depend on coalmines) linked to coalmining. An attempt is also made to determine the principal factors required for the successful execution of a restructuring process in companies focused on the basic activities of coalmining, such as companies that provide supporting activities. The restructuring process exerts an influence on the whole area that relies on coalmining. So coordination of activities among the government, the local community, and the coalmine is very important. This is the major premise of this paper. The first section of the paper focuses on identifying and analysing the key factors in restructuring and a selection of key methods, drawing on past and present practice. The key factors to be considered in a model of enterprise restructuring in the coalmining sector are considered. The second section is dedicated to the actual design of the model of enterprise restructuring in the coal industry. The proposed model is based on positive experiences in the restructuring of coalmining companies in Europe, with an emphasis on Slovenia, successful approaches to crisis management in corporations, and identifying key areas in bringing about a strategic turnarounds in company operation. To support the argument for the key business areas, a brief summary of empiric findings has been included to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model and the restructuring process. The summary is based on the survey done in both Slovenian coalmining companies (especially in Velenje Coal Mine) and their subsidiaries. The Northern Cape Province in South Africa has high levels of annual direct normal solar irradiance and reserves of zinc (Zn) ores. The question arises as to the benefits of integrating renewable solar energy into the beneficiation routes of these reserves. The paper evaluates a novel flowsheet for the production and beneficiation of Zn in this region, maximising localised solar energy as a source for both electricity and process heat. Solar variability is discussed and the cost and benefits of thermal storage in the flowsheets are evaluated by its influence on the levelised costs of electricity and process energy over the project life-time at a possible implementation site. The results of the developed scoping model showed that solar photovoltaic integration to provide electricity for electrowinning without battery storage can lead to more than 10% cost saving on electricity over the lifetime of the project. Additional savings potential was identified when battery storage was included to enable the solar PV system to supply electricity during peak tariff periods. The solar thermal case showed the most promise with savings of 70% on heating costs for casting, while solar PV electricity without storage resulted in a 16% cost saving on heating for casting over the lifetime of the project. Solar PV electricity generation resulted in the avoidance of more than 20% of CO2 emissions from grid electricity use. Solar thermal heating can avoid up to 80% of the CO2 emissions associated with grid electricity use for remelting of Zn cathodes for casting. A set of six design principles for rock engineering was developed by Bieniawski: design objectives; minimum uncertainty; simplicity of design components; state-of-the-art practice; optimization; and constructability. These principles translate into a ten-step design process. Although this methodology was developed for rock engineering, it is applicable to any design process, feasibility study, etc. Diligent use of such a process will ensure that a defensible design or evaluation has been carried out. Recently a ?strategic conversation? process has been identified by Ilbury and Sunter that includes the following ten steps: scope; players; rules of the game; key uncertainties; scenarios; SWOT analysis; options; decisions; measurable outcomes; and meaning of winning. A comparison of these steps with those of the design process shows a remarkable correlation. This is perhaps not surprising since engineering design is a strategic up-front issue, and front end loading in a project is critical to achieve the expected project performance. Based on the close correlation between the strategic conversation and engineering design processes, a circular design process, rather than a linear process, is proposed. The ?circle of design? better reflects the importance of review and monitoring in the two phases of successful design and implementation?defining the design, and executing the design.

The long-term open-pit mine production scheduling problem (OPMPSP) is typically solved in two broad stages. The first stage entails optimisation of the ultimate pit limit, which delimits the economical final pit and maximises the undiscounted value of the deposit. The second stage entails optimisation of the long-term open-pit mine production scheduling, which maximises the discounted value of the deposit. The long-term OPMPSP is a type of an NP-hard problem, such as the travelling salesman problem (TSP), because it is intrinsically complex to solve since it incorporates both hard and soft constraints. Therefore, metaheuristic approaches have been used to find global optimum solutions to the long-term OPMPSP. This paper presents a metaheuristic approach utilising a dual interchange algorithm (DIA) to solve the long-term OPMPSP. The DIA is a parent algorithm which supervises two subservient algorithms, namely, simulated annealing (SA) and Tabu search (TS). The DIA selects the better solution generated in each run from the two algorithms, and simultaneously penalises the algorithm that produced an inferior solution, while rewarding the one that produced a better solution. The DIA was tested on the three-dimensional Arizona Copper Deposit (KD) dataset, which is publicly available for research purposes from the online MineLib repository. It was set to generate net present values (NPVs) in five-minute intervals and the solution improved until it plateaued at about 30 minutes of runtime. The NPVs compared favourably to those obtained on the same KD dataset but obtained over 24-hour runtimes, when solved using simulated annealing and Tabu search algorithms, and the NPV generated from the work of Muñoz (2012) using the modified TopoSort as found on the MineLib repository at the time of this study. Therefore, this paper demonstrates that DIAs can be developed and used to solve the three-dimensional long-term OPMPSP.

This paper captures the essential steps employed in developing Outotec?s new FloatForceTM mechanism. The development of a flotation mechanism essentially revolves around the efficient transfer of installed power, or capital cost, to optimum flotation performance. Optimum flotation performance will be achieved if a balance between metallurgical results, operating and capital costs is maintained. The development of the FloatForceTM mechanism was done by careful evaluation of each of these three areas. This paper focuses on how experience, CFD and laboratory equipment, pilot and plant tests are used to test and evaluate a new flotation mechanism. Validated variables include mixing profile, power draw and local air hold-up. Metallurgical and mechanical design considerations are not covered in this paper. Besides using the FloatForceTM mechanism in new flotation equipment, the FloatForceTM mechanism can be used in existing flotation cell installations, thus enabling improvements in the mixing profiles, solids suspension and metallurgical performance of operating flotation circuits. Results of several tests carried out in existing plant operations are presented.

The SORD Miner is a patented mining principle being developed to exploit mineral and energy resources that current technology can not access. SORD Miner is designed to operate in underground wet, granular, continuously collapsing geological environments such as alluvial and marine deposits. It is somewhat like a cutter suction dredge and should be capable of mining its way through any fine granular material like sand or gravel, pumping the slurry back to the surface. In areas where the target layer is covered, the SORD Miner is inserted below the water table and will tunnel its way to the mineral deposits at depth. This paper describes the development, concept testing and prototype construction of the SORD Miner.

"The static recrystallization behaviour of Ti-Nb microalloyed high-strength steel during hot deformation was studied by conducting double-hit hot compression experiments using a Gleeble-3500 thermomechanical simulator. The effects of deformation temperature, strain rate, strain, and initial austenite grain size on the static recrystallization fraction are discussed. The static recrystallization kinetics were modelled, and the results show that the static recrystallization fraction increased with deformation temperature, strain rate, and strain and interpass time. The static recrystallization activation energy Qs was 326.05 kJ mol-1. Comparison of the experimental results and predicted results indicates that the effects of deformation parameters on the static recrystallization in multistage hot deformation are significant. The predicted results are in good agreement with the experimental results. IntroductionIn hot-forming processes, complex microstructures are often induced by multiple hot deformation mechanisms (Zhang et al., 2014; Liang et al., 2015). The softening behaviour during hot processing has generated considerable interest because component properties are influenced significantly by the corresponding microstructural evolution (Wu et al., 2010). It is well known that dynamic recrystallization (DRX); metadynamic recrystallization (MDRX), which occurs by the growth of DRX nuclei during intervals of deformation; and static recrystallization (SRX), which occurs by nucleation and growth during the intervals of deformation, can significantly alter the austenite grain size (Chen et al., 2015. Chen, Sui, and Cui, 2014; Mao et al., 2014). The long interpass times allow complete SRX to take place if the steel is being rolled above the interpass recrystallization stop temperature (Tnr), i.e. in the absence of carbonitride precipitation (Siciliano, 2000). In recent research, microalloying technology coupled with new-generation thermomechanical control processing (NG-TMCP) has proved efficient in achieving the proper balance between strength, toughness, ductility, and formability by means of a suitable combination of chemical composition and thermomechanical treatment parameters (Shukla et al., 2012; Bandyopadhyay et al., 2011). The alloying elements Nb, V, Ti are widely used in high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel to achieve the desired strength and toughness properties with solid-solution strengthening, precipitation hardening, grain refinement, and dislocation strengthening (Opiela, 2014; Chen and Yu, 2012). The wide applicability of alloying elements in HSLA steel is due to the fact that heat treatments are not required after forming of the parts, which results in time and cost savings."

Due to grade estimation uncertainty, two statistical errors can occur. The Type I error is where material is classified as ore and mined, despite the true value being below the break-even grade. This material is dilution. The Type II error is where the material is estimated to be below the cut-off grade and is classified as waste, although the true grade is actually above the break-even grade. This material is not mined and is lost. The uncertainty was assumed to follow a normal distribution in a previous study. For this study, estimated block values are compared to those determined after mining (the best estimate of the true grade). This actual data from four mines shows that the uncertainty follows a Laplace. There is no single solution regarding adjusting the cut-off grade away from the break-even grade, considering estimation uncertainty, that could be applied to all gold mines. However, adjusting the cut-off grade downwards (up to 22% for one mine) is noted when optimizing the profit considering grade uncertainties. This type of adjustment could open up significant mining areas and extend the life of the mine.

A novel mathematical model is presented which describes the behaviour of beds of particles, of uniform size and shape but different densities, during autogenous separations. The approach used in the formulation of the dispersion model is a phenomenological one based on a statistical view, which leads to a diffusion-like representation of the autogenous-separation process. Although the model currently considers only density-related phenomena, it accounts quantitatively not only for the density-segregation aspects of the process but for the interactions between the particles. Quantitative predictions of the dispersion model are compared with the results obtained in tests using a specially constructed experimental batch jig, and it is shown that the model provides an adequate quantitative description of the process for particles of uniform size and shape. It is pointed out that, for the description of more complicated autogenous separations, a more rigorous formulation of the particle drag and density-segregation terms will have to be incorporated into the dispersion model. Nonetheless it is concluded that the model as presented in this paper provides not only a novel insight into the mechanisms of autogenous separations but a means by which to analyse similar systems.

The Unki Platinum Mines concentrator, employing an MF2 circuit configuration which includes fully-autogenous primary milling of run-of-mine (ROM) ore, was commissioned in November 2010. The project was Anglo American Platinum?s first PGM concentrator in Zimbabwe and would form a significant contribution to the group?s platinum production. The project financials demonstrated that the project was operating-cost sensitive. After reviewing the metallurgical testwork, mineralogical examinations, and the history of similar operations, it became apparent that the Unki ore characteristics rendered it amenable to autogenous milling. The primary ball mill, structurally designed for 30 per cent steel load, could be operated at the required initial phase throughput with fully-autogenous primary milling, realizing savings in both power requirements and grinding media consumption. The original mill sizing had been done with fully-autogenous milling in mind, but allowing for flexibility and mitigation in case of varied mining fragmentation. Since attaining steady state, target grinds have been achieved. This paper looks at the Unki ore characterization programme, design considerations, and the operational and control philosophy for a successful comminution circuit, and discusses the design to produce a flexible, low opex, mitigated comminution and overall MF2 flowsheet that is easily expanded in line with the potential for optimum exploitation of the orebody.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publication Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systemé International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. Crushing plant managers need to assess, manage, and communicate the environmental impact induced by their crushing plant operations as a step towards the sustainable development of the company. However, performing reliable environmental impact calculations of crushing plants can be challenging when the availability of operational and emission data is low, and when the company’s environmental expertise is not adapted and connected to plant operations (or does not currently exist). To address these challenges, this paper proposes a practical approach where the lifecycle assessment methodology (LCA) is combined with process simulations in a web-based tool. To describe what functionality such a tool should have to be incorporated into a company’s workflow, the system that surrounds a crushing plant is analysed. Further, a case study with a three-stage crushing plant is introduced to showcase how the simulated power draw results produced with the beta version of the tool can be compared to measured sensor data from the crushing plant for one operational day. The results indicate that the simulation tool can provide an adequate estimation of the specific energy for the different material fractions and give an overview of the environmental impact of the process caused by electricity and explosives consumption. Plant managers and operators can use this tool to calculate the environmental impacts of their plant and simulate how different operational strategies influence them. The implementation of new technology in mining can be likened to a paradoxical situation or dilemma, where, on one hand, major mining projects are not able to solicit investor funding unless it is proven that the business cases were developed using tried and tested mining methods. On the other hand, new and innovative mining technology and mining methods need first to demonstrate and prove themselves under real production conditions over a reasonable period before they can be considered bankable feasibility studies in the mining industry. This dilemma locks new mining technology investments in a continuous cycle of underinvestment. Technological innovations are particularly relevant to the mining industry, which deals with the challenges of depleting access to resources, requiring new solutions to remain sustainable and competitive. In the last decade, the mining industry has come to realise that technological innovations can directly contribute to its sustained competitive advantage (Sanchez, Hartlieb, 2020), helping to reduce costs, lessen environmental impact, increase production, and improve mineral recovery. While understanding barriers and drivers for technology adoption is important for the success of technology implementation efforts and the sustainability of the mining sector (Muduli et al., 2013), this paper suggests strategies to exit the dilemma, proposing a preliminary framework.

The development of an accounting code for the metallurgical industry has been debated for many years. Following the series of tumultuous economic events in the nineties and earlier this century that have affected business, there was much need for legislation to be passed to minimize potential risk. One of the consequences to affect the mining industry was the enhancement of existing geological codes for reporting. In parallel the sponsors of AMIRA have taken the brave step to develop a generic code for metal accounting that embraces the full gamut of industry. In this paper the code will be reviewed in the context of metallurgical accounting as it applies to coal preparation. This paper provides the background for this development and an insight into the mechanism for the debate for the generation of this code. The key elements of the code as it applies to the coal industry are explained but most importantly the key opportunities are highlighted.

The effect of a sulfite reagent on the floatability of chalcopyrite and enargite was investigated in this paper. The flotation tests using single and mixed minerals were performed under various concentrations of sulfite. The flotation tests using a single mineral showed that the sulfite reagent depressed the natural floatability of both minerals at pH 9. Surprisingly, enargite was floated after the addition of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) following the sulfite treatment, and the floatability of chalcopyrite depressed under a similar condition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis results showed that the sulfate species increased after the sulfite treatment on both minerals. However, the addition of PAX removed this sulfate species and rendered the enargite surface hydrophobic. This phenomenon was not observed on the chalcopyrite surface. FTIR analysis and PAX adsorption studies were performed to support this finding. The flotation of a mixed mineral was in agreement with the flotation of a single mineral, indicating a possibility for selective flotation of chalcopyrite and enargite using the proposed method. One of the most critical and complicated steps in mine design is a suitable mining method selection based upon geological, geotechnical, geographical and economical parameters. Since there are many factors involved in mining method selection, the decision-making process is very difficult. In this paper, the Analytical Hierarchy Process, with 13 criteria, is used to develop a suitable mining method for the Golbini No. 8 deposit in Jajarm (Iran). Six alternatives (conventional cut and fill, mechanized cut and fill, shrinkage stoping, sublevel stoping, bench mining, and stull stoping) are evaluated. The studies show that the suitable mining method for this deposit in the present situation is the conventional cut and fill method.

Norman Hanson Visiting Fellowship The Norman Hanson Visiting Fellowship, supported jointly by the National Development Fund for the Building Industry (inaugurated by the Building Industries Federation (8.A.)), the Institute of S.A. Architects, the Association of S.A. Quantity Surveyors, and the National Building Research Institute of the CSIR exists to finance fully or wholly visits by eminent authorities from overseas to South Africa for the purposes of seminars, informed discussions, consultation, and possible active participation in scientific, technological, and development projects of importance to the building industry.

In the processing of sulfidic ores, pyrite is usually depressed and ends up in the tailings. However, pyrite is the most common species responsible for acid mine drainage (AMD) due to its spontaneous oxidation. This AMD affects the tailing chemical stability by dissolving some toxic or heavy metals species such as As, Cd, Co, Pb, and Zn, which can migrate into the surrounding ecosystems. Therefore, the strategies to reduce pyrite’s environmental impacts are a crucial point to produce more chemically stable tailings. Consequently, numerous studies have been made to find procedures that could inhibit or restrain AMD. This work aims to develop a procedure for designing conceptual flotation circuits that can produce tailings with low content of pyrite and to assess this type of circuit with traditional flotation circuits. The method consists of applying optimal flotation design where three products are considered: metal concentrate, pyrite concentrate, and tailing with low content of pyrite. Two approaches are considered; in the first, a flotation circuit is designed to generate a concentrate rich in all sulfide minerals and to obtain a tail with low pyrite content. Then, a second flotation circuit is designed for the selective separation of the bulk into metal concentrate and pyrite concentrate. This is called fractional separation design. In the second approach, a flotation circuit design is realised that generate the three products simultaneously. This is called integrated separation design. Both fractional separation design and integrated separation design are assessed in this paper. This methodology is focused on cleaner production (waste prevention and resource minimisation) rather than end-of-pipe technology (treat existing waste). The methodology was applied to a copper sulfide ore from a local company in the Antofagasta region (Chile). This ore contains chalcocite, covellite, iron oxides, and pyrite.
