The performance of the world economy improved significantly in 1984. Real world output!/ grew 4.3% (compared with 2.6% in 19831, the highest since the 4.4% increase recorded in 1978 (table 1). The output of industrial nations rose 4.9%, while that of the developing nations rose 3.7%. The United States and Japan had the largest increases in output of the major industrial nations, with respective increases of 6.8% and 5.8% (table 2). The components of real output with the most significant growth in the industrial countries were gross fixed investment (9.2%), consumer expenditure (3.1%), and public consumption (2.5%) (table 1). Industrial output, as measured by industrial production indices, has returned to about the 1980 level for most of the major industrial nations (table 2). Exceptions to this were industrial production in Japan and the United States; Japan's industrial production rose steadily throughout the 5-yr period and is now more than 16% above the 1980 level, and the industrial production index for the United States reached 11 1.2 (1980=100.0). Real total domestic demand grew at 8.7% in the United States, more than double the rate of Japan, which, at 4.0%, had the second-largest growth. Average demand for all industrial countries was up 5.1%. During 1984 the U.S. dollar showed great strength on international markets, contributing to large current-dollar negative net exports of goods and services and even larger negative net exports of the merchandise sector. While growing U.S. imports helped spread the benefits of the recovery, they also led to a widening of current account imbalances and growing trade tensions throughout the world.3/, 4/

This paper describes the methods and costs of deepening the 3-compartment underground shaft in the Hooper Tunnel adit at the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining and Concentrating Company Crescent mine in the Coeur d'Alene mining region, 7 miles east of Kellogg, Shoshone County, Idaho. The work was done with the aid of a Defense Minerals Exploration Administration contract (No. Idm-E493, Docket No. DMEA-2764). Preparation for deepening the shaft was begun March 26, 1953, and sinking was completed May 27, 1954. The shaft, bottomed at 1,275.5 feet in 1939, was deepened to 3,276 feet, using mechanical mucking and intermediate pockets. A total of 50,349 man-hours was required to complete the work of sinking 2,000.5 feet, cutting 7 pump stations, and driving 2 pocket raises. The rate of advance was 7.1 feet of shaft per operating day, or 8.4 feet per day of actual sinking. The total direct cost for sinking was $205.20 per foot.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the applicability of the freeze-drying technique for preparing dispersion-strengthened tungsten powders suitable for conversion by powder metallurgy into materials which might have improved high-temperature strength. Extruded rods from compacts of tungsten-5 vol pct thoria had at 1,650° C a tensile strength of 30,300 psi and a 10-hour stress-rupture strength of 12,700 psi, These are slightly below those measured for swaged rods of commercial tungsten-3.7 vol pct thoria. Only those tungsten-thoria dispersions containing a stoichiometric deficiency of oxygen yielded a significant strengthening effect. A low-melting eutectic formed in extruded tungsten dispersions containing either zirconia or yttria, which caused a lowering of the tensile strengths. These tensile strengths were only slightly higher than strengths of elemental tungsten made from commercial powder having a particle size of 2.4 microns (Fisher subsieve). Sheet made from this commercial tungsten had a slightly higher tensile strength than tungsten made by freeze drying, but the freeze-dried tungsten sheet had a lower recrystallization temperature, a lower ductile-to-brittle transition temperature, and a higher purity.

[The formation of gas hydrates in natural-gas pipe lines depends on temperature and pressure conditions in the lines as well as on the presence of condensed water. The operating pressure in a pipe line may be determined easily and usually is available from the records of operation, but the temperature seldom is known. In cooperation with the American Gas Association, the Bureau of Mines, in its investigation of gas hydrates, conducted a pipe-line-temperature survey and studied underground temperatures at depths at which pipe lines ordinarily are buried and the relationship of these temperatures to prevailing atmospheric conditions. A similar but more limited study of this type was, conducted by engineers of the Bureau of Mines a number of years ago.4/A summary of the earlier findings was included in a general report by the Bureau on the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines.5/ In the present study, data on temperature variations were obtained at several places widely separated geographically. This information should assist pipe-line engineers in designing and operating natural-gas pipe lines. In the pipe-line-temperature survey here resorted, a study was made along a 22-inch natural-gas pipe line: originating near Amarillo, Tex., and extending northwestward through New Mexico into Colorado (fig. 1). A previous report of the Bureau of Mines dealt with the toxicity of dichlorodifluoromethane5, a new refrigerant that has a remarkably low toxicity. Continued research by the Prigidaire Corporation6 and toxicological experiments performed in the Laboratory of Applied Physiology of the University of Cincinnati7 revealed another organic fluoride, dichlorotetrafluoroethane, whose toxicity also appeared to be of a very low order and whose physical-and chemical properties make it suitable for refrigeration purposes. In addition to low toxicity, safety in its use is further enhanced by its physical properties, which permit the design of equipment that operates at comparatively low pressures and hence mitigates the dangers and problems of leakage. The investigation described in this report was performed by the Bureau of Mines at the request and with the cooperation of the Frigidaire Corporation.

The analysis of in-mine grounding systems began with an extensive literature search which is still in progress. About a dozen articles have been found which deal directly with grounding problems on low voltage power systems or mine power systems. These systems have special grounding problems because normal load currents can be nearly as large as many types of fault currents. Information has been collected on the influence of cable spacing) conduit geometry, location of nearby conducting structures, etc., on the magnitude and path of fault current. Many other articles have been found which are less directly related to mine ground system analysis. The in-mine ground system analysis team has also inspected portions of two mine power systems to become familiar with the practices used in grounding. One electrical engineer and several other mine personnel have been interviewed concerning mine power system grounding practice. Already several aspects of the mine grounding system have been marked as requiring special attention.

Synopsis U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accidents statistics have identified ore-pass hazards as a significant safety problem in U.S. underground metal mines. The statistics show that nearly 75% of injuries are directly or indirectly related to pulling or freeing of ore-pass chutes, the use of hand tools in ore passes, fails of broken rock in ore passes and structural failures of chutes or gates and ore-pass walls. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating hazards in and around ore passes in hard rock mines. Risk assessment methods, such as fault-tree analysis, have been employed to identify the most probable causes of orepass failures, define research priorities and analyse the factors that result in malfunctioning and unsafe ore passes. Static and dynamic loads are being measured in a laboratory setting with the use of a reduced-scale orepass mock-up. Field tests are being initiated in mine ore passes to determine static and dynamic loads. Data from the test ore passes are being compared with data from the mine to characterize true system behaviour. Computer modelling with the use of closed-form solutions, finite-element analyses and a newly developed particle flow code predicts static and dynamic leads from the flow and the impact of ore and waste in the ore pass. Preliminary results indicate that dynamic impacts from ore and waste rock might be considerably greater than expected. The total static load is substantially less than is typically used fur the structural design of chute and gate support members. It is suggested that damping factors, normal and shear stiffness and mass frictional characteristics have a significant effect on particle flow and resulting impact loads. This is being verified with the use of results from laboratory tests, field tests and particle flow analyses. Ore passes are vertical or steeply inclined openings in a rock mass through which ore and waste are transported and where they mar also be stored. A typical underground mining system is shown in Fig. 1. The arrows indicate the locations of ore passes and loading pockets and their relative configurations. The control of material flow is potentially one of the most hazardous operations in underground mining. According to MSHA data. most of the ore pass-related accidents in the U.S.A. are associated with the loading-unloading cycle and removal of blockages from ore passes. In particular, attempts to free ore hang-ups have resulted in multiple fatalities. The hazards are obvious; there is uncertainty as to when the ore will break loose and miners are unable to escape falling rock to a safe location. Although ore passes and chutes and gate systems for underground metal and non-metal mines roust meet the requirements specified in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Parts 57 and 75, recent structural failures of ore-pass linings and gates have underlined the lack of adequate ore-pass design standards available to both MSHA enforcement staff and mine engineers. Because of the importance of an ore pass to the safe operation of a mine design criteria need to be assessed and new guidelines developed. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the Nationals Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating hazards in and around ore passes in hard rock mines and studying design criteria for ore passes. Rock mass classification is widely used throughout the underground mining industry—in both coal and hard-rock mines. It is used in all stages of the mining process, from site characterization to production operations. The goal of the International Workshop on Rock Mass Classification in Underground Mining was to provide a forum for leading practitioners of rock mass classification to come together and share their methods and experiences with the technique. The workshop was held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on May 31, 2007. It was co-chaired by Christopher Mark, Ph.D., P.E., National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh, PA, and Rimas Pakalnis, P.Eng., University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. The proceedings of the workshop contain 16 invited papers from 9 countries, reflecting the international depth and breadth of current practice. Applications in both hard-rock and coal mining are well represented. Some of the topics that were addressed at the workshop include: • Major rock mass classification systems used in mining and their variants • Collection of input data through observation, rock testing, and geophysics • Design of mine layouts and rock support systems using classification • Estimation of rock mass strength and other input parameters for numerical models from classification • Applications in weak rock, raise boring, cavability assessment, and other special topics • Risk assessment using rock mass classification

This work examined the feasibility of in-mine coal preparation in two phases. Phase I included a survey of previous investigations and a preliminary analysis of the economic and technical feasibility on a selection of representative sites and degrees of cleaning. The contract was terminated at the end of Phase I. The preliminary analysis determined that in-mine preparation systems can be applied using currently available technology. The most likely mines for application will have shaft or slope access and be deeper than 500 feet. The refuse disposal systems technically feasible are (1) pneumatic placement of coarse refuse in room and pillar panels or longwall faces, (2) mechanical placement of coarse and fine fractions in room and pillar panels, and (3) hydraulic placement of fine fractions in room and pillar panels. The economic feasibility is much more dependent on the refuse disposal-system than on the preparation system. It is estimated that the capital cost of an in-mine preparation and disposal system would be $6.00 per clean ton and the operating cost would be $1.24 per clean ton for a 1 million clean ton per year mine.

Under the terms of the act establishing the Bureau of Mines, this bureau was authorized to carryon the work of testing and analyzing fuels which had been conducted by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey. That work included in its scope an investigation of the availability and uses ofliquid as well as solid fuels, for the original outline of the fuel-testing investigations contemplated, as soon as the funds would be available, a study of the liquid-fuel resources of the country and the making of related researches to determine how these resources could be utilized with greatest efficiency. Owing to the fact that many difficulties were being encountered in the adaptation of the heavier fuel oils for convenient use in internalcombustion engines, it was deemed best to begin the investigation of liquid fuels with tests of gasoline, a fuel in more or less general use. When this investigation began, the extensive introduction, especially by foreign powers, of liquid fuels for small naval craft had awakened much interest. However, the quality of gasoline was reported to vary materially in different countries and the quantity available was said to be rapidly decreasing, with the probability of a prohibitive increase in price. At the same time the claim was made that denatured alcohol, of fairly uniform quality, could be procured in all parts of the world, that unlimited quantities could be readily produced at a low cost, and that this fuel could be used much more efficiently than gasoline in internal-combustion engines. Such statements naturally led to a widespread belief that the time was near at hand when denatured alcohol would entirely displace gasoline as engine fuel. Therefore, the first investigations of the liquid mineral fuels logically embraced a careful series of comparative tests of gasoline and denatured alcohol in engines. A series of over 2,000 such tests was conducted at the Government fuel-testing plants at St. Louis, Mo., and Norfolk, Va., details of which are given in the following pages. The report is published by the Bureau of Mines because of the transfer of the fuel-testing investigations to this bureau.

Inadequate engineering design criteria for coal refuse embankments has allowed hazardous impoundment structures in coal mining areas to be created. A necessary first step to develop adequate design criteria is the determina¬tion of basic, respresentative physical property data on the materials that constitute typical refuse embankments. An extensive field and laboratory program was undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Much physical property data was generated. Additonal petrographic analysis and large scale triaxial compression testing was performed by others. The data presented here should aid in establishing design parameters for coal refuse embankments

This report presents engineering drawings for six material handling devices for underground coal mines. The devices were designed under a U.S. Bureau of Mines program to reduce injuries from material handling during mine and equipment maintenance. The six devices are (1) scoop-mounted 1411: boom, (2) swing-arm boom, (3) heavy-component lift-transport, (4) mine mud cart, (5) container-workstation vehicle, and (6) timber car. Each device is described briefly, and recommendations are made concerning the design of new devices.

This report includes a short history of uranium and its uses, mineralogy of common uranium minerals, and information on the use of electronic prospecting equipment and tests for detecting the presence of uranium. Details are given on geologically favorable areas and formations and practical methods of prospecting. Some information is given on the staking of claims, what lands are open to prospecting, and methods of securing mining rights. A forecast of the economic outlook for uranium is included. Appendixes give sources of additional information and a list of libraries where unclassified Atomic Energy Commission reports may be consulted. Because the increasing use of uranium by industry has revived interest in prospecting and exploration for this element, the Bureau of Mines has issued this report, which brings up to date and expands the subject matter of a hand- book on uranium exploration and production published in 1956.l

The Bureau of Mines investigated the mechanics of fuming of iron-carbon melts during top-blowing with oxygen. Melts weighing 45 lb were prepared in an induction furnace and blown with oxygen by means of water-cooled lances. The rate of fuming was measured and correlated with the operating variables. The data showed that the primary cause of fuming was a boil at the bath surface in the impingement zone of the oxygen jet. Nucleation of the carbon monoxide bubbles producing the boil was apparently brought about by the precipitation of an oxide phase. The actual fuming mechanism involved partial oxidation and vaporization of bubble films and fine metal spray generated by the bursting of the bubbles. Bubbles that formed outside the impingement zone produced little fume. The distribution of trace elements between the metal and fume strongly indicated that the fume contained fine spray particles as well as particles that had condensed from vapor. The rate of fuming was found to be proportional to the carbon content of the metal) the concentration of oxygen in the jet) and the bath temperature) provided that a continuous boil occurred. In the absence of a boil) very little fume was produced.

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the recent developments in the heap leaching of gold ores with dilute cyanide solutions and the recovery of gold and associated silver from the pregnant effluents by a carbon adsorption-desorption method. Mineralogical considerations, experimental work, field studies, and commercial operations are described. Also presented are recent process advances developed by the Bureau, including the application of (1) alcohol additives to the conventional hot alkaline cyanide strip solution to enhance gold desorption from precious metal-laden activated carbon, and (2) Na2S precipitation of the silver from geld-silver cyanide solutions as a means of reducing the inventory of carbon required for precious-metal adsorption from heap leach effluents and for the production of low-silver bullion from activated carbon stripping solutions.

The Huntsville study area in northeastern Alabama consists of Jackson, Limestone, Madison, and Marshall Counties. Major emphasis was placed on the Huntsville urban area in Madison County to analyze the relationship of urban growth and the minerals industry. Huntsville was delineated into its component urban, suburban, and rural parts for 1964, and the primary area of growth was predicted for 1990. Population estimates were made for the four-county area as a unit and Madison County separately, and projected to 1990. Demand estimates for crushed stone and sand and gravel were made for the same area units and projected to 1990. Analysis of quarry sites in the Huntsville area was made for the present and for the future. The mineral operations of the study area are all located in rural areas; in the case of Huntsville, the mineral sites are located in areas defined as "rural" in the component urban-suburban-rural system. The operations outside Madison County can expect to have minor problems with urban encroachment, while those operations in Madison County can expect major problems associated with urban growth and development. Some of the problems associated with limes tone production can be reduced if producers invest in capital equipment that will reduce the nuisances inherent in this activity. Although urban expansion endangers some quarry operations in Huntsville, topographic and political restrictions which prevent urban expansion can effectively shield quarry operations for some time.

A procedure, which can be performed in the field by nonanalytical personnel, is given for sensitive spot tests for detecting tellurium or selenium. The expressed need of a field test for detecting small amounts of tellurium, which may be accompanied by relatively large amounts of selenium, has led to the development of this method. Tellurium search has been impeded by the lack of a satisfactory test from the standpoint of sensitivity and specificity. A quantitative laboratory method exists, but it is expensive and relatively laborious. Several other qualitative tests are known, but they require unstable solutions, which must be freshly prepared for use, and a greater variety of laboratory equipment. The particular advantages of the test described are its simplicity and the stability of the reagents required, there-fore is is well adapted for field use. Also, this test was found to be of practical use in the analytical laboratory when screening samples, thereby reducing analytical costs. The roughly quantitative interpretation of the results can save time by indicating the approximate size of the sample taken for a quantitative determination.

Greensand, which is widely distributed in the Eastern United States, was produced in 1975 only by Inversand Co., a subsidiary of Hungerford & Terry, Inc., near Clayton, N.J. Production and sales information are not available for publication. Raw greensand produced by the company was sold for agricultural use as a soil conditioner. Processed greensand was used by manufacturers as filter media in equipment for the removal of manganese, iron and other elements from water. The University of Delaware received a grant of $17,051 from the Bureau of Mines early in 1976 to continue its studies of the effectiveness of greensand in removing metallic contaminants from waste waters.

This conference was attended by representatives of Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, and the United States ands by invitation, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Spain, and Russia. The first international conference of representatives of mine-safety, research stations was held the United States Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Experiment station in 1912 .4/
