The production of phosphate concentrates (phosphate rock) from slimes represents a challenge to the phosphate industry worldwide. In Brazil, this challenge is particularly relevant due to the consistently low P2O5 grades and the igneous origin. The Brazilian phosphate deposits are made up mainly of apatite from alkaline chimneys, representing 80% of the Brazilian reserves; phosphorite deposits contribute 18% and the other sources (guano, phosphorous bauxite, and apatite from veins) reach 2%. The Brazilian industry beneficiates phosphate ores that are mineralogically more complex than those treated elsewhere. The low apatite grade, inherent to the igneous Brazilian ores, added to the mineralogical complexity due to the weathering of the rocks, has represented a permanent challenge to the Brazilian process engineers. The total measured, indicated and inferred reserves reach 3.2 million tonnes of ore with average grade 11% P2O5. The development of local technology for phosphate beneficiation started in the 1960’s. The first industrial experiences of producing phosphate rock from slimes (-44µm or -325#) fraction started at Arafertil, currently Bunge Fertilizantes SA, in Araxá, in the 1980’s. This production corresponds, nowadays, to 35% of the total production of concentrates in the company (830,000t/year) in a circuit consisting of desliming in 40mm microcyclones and concentration in flotation columns, corn starch and fatty acids being utilised as reagents. The performance of slimes flotation and the process control, at Bunge´s concentrator, were improved after the introduction of column flotation technology, in the first half of the nineties. The column flotation technology for slimes recovery was expanded to other Brazilian concentrators still in the nineties: Ultrafértil (Catalão – GO), Bunge (Cajati – SP), Fosfértil (Tapira – MG) and Copebrás (Catalão – GO). At present the Brazilian production of phosphate rock is approximately 4.5Mt/year, with a strong trend for a market increase. Genuinely Brazilian technology is utilised for the processing of slimes, the concentrates representing 11 to 13% of the overall production. The production of apatite concentrates from slimes was relevant to increase phosphate recovery and reduce costs, contributing to the growth of the fertilisers industry.

"When improving a plant a mineral processing engineer would like to know the mineral composition distribution. In order to assess this distribution in particles, as compared to the corresponding distribution in particle sections, a procedure needs to be applied to the observed particle sections. Such a procedure is called a stereological correction. There exists many stereological correction procedures, but one group of such procedures is based on using those stereological equations that do not require making assumptions regarding particle shape or texture. These equations are called geometric probability equations.Davy derived a geometric probability equation to estimate the covariance of mineral composition distributions for particles from both particle sections and linear intercepts. This covariance can be used to measure the variance of the particle composition distribution of each mineral. The equation as presented by Davy requires textural information; however the equation was modified by Gay to be more directly applied to particle sections and linear intercepts. The variance obtained from applying this equation is fundamental to the binary stereological correction procedures developed by Gay and his colleagues; the covariance is fundamental to the multiphase stereological correction.Thus far, validation of both the binary and multiphase stereological correction has been achieved using numerical simulation. This paper shall present results comparing the covariance (and variance) estimates from Gay’s equation with actual three-dimensional information obtained from serially sectioning particles. This involved mounting a set of particles and continuously sectioning all particles uniformly so that the three dimensional structure of the particles could be obtained.The mineralogical data to which the equations described above were applied were derived from two individual size fractions from a hard-rock titanium deposit. "In many volcanogenic base metal deposits of Russia the gold is closely associated with copper sulphides and pyrite. The recovery of gold associated with pyrite is especially difficult problem.Investigations of gold chemical state and mineral forms in copper-zinc sulphide ores of Gay and Barsuchiy Log deposits in the Urals have been made using EPMA, optic image-analysis, XRA, SEM, thermo-electrical force measurements and selective gold leaching experiments.Two gold varieties are determined: 1) free native gold particles (from 5 µm up to 0,25-1,0 mm), which can be liberated after grinding of ore up to 0,074 µm and named “free gold”; 2)”invisible” gold, including finely disseminated native gold and chemically bound gold. The second variety can’t be disclosed during grinding. Free gold can be recovered by gravitation and flotation while the processing behaviour of “invisible” gold is determined by properties of gold-bearing sulphides: pyrite and chalcopyrite. According to results of diagnostic leaching experiments in ores of deposits mentioned above the part by weight of free gold reaches 70%, the part by weight of the ”invisible” gold is up to 20%. About 10% of gold is enclosed in quartz and acid-soluble minerals.Theoretically (taking into account gold distribution data) it’s may anticipate gold recovery by gravitation up to 60%. However after grinding up to 50-60% of class –0,074 mm only about 40% of gold passes into oversize product including 30% of free gold and 8% of ”invisible” one. It can be recovered by gravitation. Remaining free gold and ”invisible” gold can be extracted by flotation – 25% in total. Inevitable gold losses in tailings may reach 8-10%."

"Magotteaux and Anglo Platinum started a co-operation program with the main aim of establishing the optimum milling configuration measured in terms of throughput, fineness and energy consumption.For this purpose, a fully instrumented pilot milling plant, supplied by Magotteaux (Pty) Ltd, and equipped with a 0.9 x 1.0 m ball mill, was erected at Frank concentrator (Merensky Pt ore). The primary ball mills at Frank concentrator were surveyed in order to set the conditions for the base case. This data was then replicated in the pilot mill under the same configuration. Thereafter, a series of different parameters were varied in order to attempt to optimize the milling system.Only grate versus overflow discharge and open versus closed circuit will be discussed in this paper.It should be noted that this paper does not attempt to give a universal solution as to what milling configuration is optimum in all cases. The conclusions apply for this particular case and probably most others, but it would be advisable to consider each case on its own.CONCLUSION• Overflow versus grate dischargeAn overflow mill has a “pool” of slurry around the toe of the ball charge, which creates a counter lever to the ball charge. This will reduce the absorbed power in the range of 10-15% (depending on the case) and will consequently result in a coarser grind. The tests found a 4% gain in grinding efficiency (Wio) with an overflow mill but this is probably not significant.This lower absorbed power and coarser grind can be counteracted by increasing the ball charge (if below maximum) and/or by increasing the mill volume when removing the grate discharge (a typical grate takes up about 300mm of the mill length).• Open versus closed circuit"

"Huge electrochemical investigations have been performed on Technical faculty in Bor (Serbia) which main goal was the clarification of the copper sulfide minerals behaviour in hydrometallurgic and flotation processes. Modeling of these processes was a part of the effort for better understanding of the reaction mechanisms.The consideration of electrical analog circuit and mathematical model of processes at interfaces copper sulfide/electrolyte (CuS/(CuSO4+H2SO4), Cu2S/H2SO4 and CuFeS2/H2SO4), based on studies of the overvoltage – time transients, will be presented. The transients were obtained using single pulse galvanostatic method and electrochemical cell with standard three electrode assembly. In that goal it was developed an original system for computer measurements that enables the application of several methods for electrochemical investigations (galvanostatic, potentiostatic, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectrometry etc). The system was tested and adjusted using commercial electrochemical equipment made by AMEL, Milano.In the first stage of consideration the different equivalent electrical circuits have been tested by computer programme OrCAD 9.2 in order to identify the circuit with responses equivalent in shape to experimentally obtained ones. In that way it was established a configuration of an analog electrical circuit for investigated electrochemical system. That phase enabled only very rough determination of values of circuit components and their relative ratio.In the second stage the method for determination of all elements of electrical analog circuit is described. It is based on mathematical consideration of a given circuit on one hand, and valves of the overvoltages at selected times, obtained from charging and discharging parts of galvanostatic transients, on the other."

"Crushing and grinding are the two most common industrial processes. These processes consume nearly 20 per cent of the entire electric power produced worldwide. This enormous amount of electric power consumed results from the fact that modern crushing and grinding machines employ the processes first introduced by the prehistoric man, namely those of compression, impact, attrition, and cutting. The material thus handled decomposes indiscriminately, and almost completely ignoring the microscopic cracks and other defects of its structure. Apart from the irrational use of the power, the crushing and grinding processes currently in use result in irretrievable loss of useful components or else in a substantial deterioration of the final products obtained, all as a result of incomplete grinding or, reversely, of overgrinding, palletizing, or fracture of particles.The principal type of equipment that has almost universally been used all over the world for more than 150 years for crushing both natural and synthetic minerals comprises unbalanced jaw and cone crushers. The driving element of crushing bodies in these machines is an unbalanced weight, which transfers the crushing body, allowing it to squeeze the material within the eccentricity value only. The maximum reduction ratio achieved by such a drive is 5, which is due to the rigid kinematic arrangement of the crusher, its dynamic unbalance, and the impossibility of increasing the number of impacts on the material being crushed. Moreover, conventional machines cannot cope with super hard materials, and their mechanism is vulnerable to damage by uncrushable objects.On the basis of fundamental research into the theories of solid body and vibration, OAO Mekhanobr- Tekhnika have developed a range of vibrating jaw and cone inertia crushers that make a reduction ratio of 30 feasible in an open-circuit operation with the reduction ratio monitored within a wide range. In these crushers, the eccentric drive is replaced with a vibrating one. In this way the rigid kinematic drive became dynamic, thus allowing pieces of material to be crushed in a thick layer due to the effect of their bumping into each other, and with the amplitude changing automatically. "At flotation of sulfide-barite ores of one of deposits sulfide and barite concentrates are obtained. In sulfide cycle potassium xantogenate as a collector in consumption of 200 g/ton, methylisobutylcarbinol (MIBC) as a foaming agent in consumption of 30 g/ton and also liquid glass are used. In barite cycle tall oil as fatty acid collector in consumption up to 400 g/ton is used.Sulfide concentrate represents mainly gold- and silver-containing pyrite. The contents of gold makes not less than 10 g per ton, silver - not less than 278 g/t. Barite concentrate contains up to 86% of barite.Factory is working in water recirculation conditions. Owing to that in barite cycle fatty acid collector is used, technological water from tailing repository contains fatty acids soap up to 25 mg/l. Before submission into sulfide cycle this water is conditioned with active carbon to delete the main part of fatty acid collector. The active carbon consumption makes 0,4-0,5 kg per 1m3 of water or 1,5-2 kg per ton of ore. The above mentioned consumption of active carbon improves reducing of contents of fatty acid collector from the initial concentration of 25-30 mg/l to 4 mg/l. At concentration 4 mg/l fatty acid collector does not render negative influence on flotation index in sulfide cycle. At the absence of active carbon pollution of sulfide concentrate and its irrevocable lost are observed."

"This paper reports the hydrometallurgical treatment of gravity concentrates of gold samples and outcrops associated with graphite ores obtained from:• flotation tailings of crystalline graphite minerals• outcrop samples of graphitic rock associated with auriferous minerals and free gold located in the Villa Union district and surrounding areas - La Rioja Province - Argentina.Previous studies of the flotation potential of crystalline graphite minerals failed to consider the presence of noble metals.The samples represent a mineralized zone of crystalline graphite which is distributed in different formations with a NE - SW trend in Maz, Punta Colorada and Las Ramaditas hills, covering an area of about 300 square kilometers."

"During the conventional chromite dissolution process; chromite ore concentrates were ground to at least <90 µm using the ball mill and after adding Na2CO3 and leaning material (instead of CaCO3 also residues from the leaching process) at a ratio of e.g. 1:0.75:1.2, depending on the specific formulation, follows the digestion e.g. in a rotary kiln, heated in countercurrent. The reaction time is 3 to 8 h. The calcine is comminuted and leached with water or a thin chromate solution. Depending on the type of ore used, the yield is 75-85 %. The disadvantage of the above-described process is that it is impossible, using current technology, to achieve a complete digestion of the chromite ores and that the chromium-containing residues have to be disposed of as special waste, involving a large financial effort.The subject of this study was the investigation of the effect of vibratory milling on chromite dissolution. The impact stress in the vibratory mill causes the mechanical activation of chromite, which is characterised by lattice defects. The degree of mechanical activation can be quantified by measuring the relative X-ray diffraction intensities at the parent lattice planes of chromite. Each relative X-ray diffraction ratio correlates with a certain degree of digestion. As opposed to vibratory milling, a complete digestion of chromite using a ball mill is impossible, even at extremely long grinding times.In this investigation a chromite concentrate from Pulpinar/Kayseri with content of 44 % Cr2O3 and the Eccentric Vibratory Mill was used. In order to verify the effect of the vibrating grinding on chromite dissolution, reaction kinetic investigations on digestion and leaching were carried out."

Bauxite is the main raw material in alumina and refractory industries. China has plentiful bauxite resources, most of which belong to the diaspore type bauxite with characteristics of high aluminum content, high silicon content and low ratio of alumina and silica (A/S). The resources with A/S 4-7 account for more than 60% of the total resource reserves of bauxite. Therefore improving the A/S through bauxite desilication is the key task of bauxite concentration in China. Normally the grinding fineness of 80-90% - 0.074mm is required in the bauxite flotation process. Thus fine grinding of bauxite ores is necessary, which leads to the high energy consumption. In the meanwhile, bauxite ores are easy to produce slime during grinding processes. The large amount of slime produced in fine grinding greatly worsens the process environment of bauxite flotation, affects the separation performance and results in the loss of metal. Also, fine grinding makes the flotation concentrate difficult to dewater, while the water content in the flotation concentrate must be removed by distillation in the subsequent alumina dissolution process, causing the increase of energy consumption and cost in the production of alumina. In this study, the selective grinding behaviors were examined with Henan Bauxite as feed. Separation of alumina and silica at a coarser grinding fineness was achieved and new route was explored to enhance the desilication in bauxite concentration to improve the A/S of bauxite concentrate.

Generally, if the bond valence (BV) between metal ion and oxygen of the mineral is greater than 0.8, only surface species –Me-O-H or –Me-O exposures on the mineral interface, if the BV is between 0.2-0.8, the metal ion exposures on the interface, and if the BV is less than 0.2 the metal ion dissolves into water. The PZCs of oxide minerals and island silicate minerals are determined by the bond valence of the bond in the mineral crystals, the higher the bond valence the lower the PZC of the mineral. So the PZC sequence of Al2SiO5 minerals is kyanite> andalusite> sillimanite. The general rule for framework silicate minerals is as: The higher the Al content, the lower the PZC of the mineral, when the ratio of Al to Si in the tetrahedron skeleton is below 1:3. The higher the Al content, the higher the PZC of the mineral, when the ratio of Al to Si in the skeleton is between 1:3 and 1:1. The general rule for layer silicate minerals is summarized as: the three-layer silicate minerals have much lower PZCs than that of the two-layer silicate minerals. The threelayer silicate mineral with the octahedron layer occupied by lower charged cations has lower PZC than that of the three-layer silicate mineral with the octahedron layer occupied by higher charged cations. The twolayer silicate mineral with the octahedron layer occupied by lower charged cations has higher PZC than that of the two-layer silicate mineral with the octahedron layer occupied by higher charged cations. The layer silicate mineral with Al substitution in the tetrahedron layer has lower PZC than that of the layer silicate mineral without Al substitution in the tetrahedron layer. Such pyroxene minerals whose M1 is occupied by a trivalence cation and the M2 is occupied by a monovalence cation has lower PZCs than those both M1 and M2 are all occupied by bivalence cations. Such hornblende minerals whose M2 is occupied by a trivalence cation and the M4 is occupied by a monovalence cation has lower PZCs than those both M2 and M4 are all occupied by bivalence cations. There is no Si4+ or 4 coordinated Al3+ exposures on the surface of framework silicate minerals, the metal ions of three layer or chain silicate minerals are compact between tetrahedron layersor chains, they hinder the metal ions to interact with oleate acid radical, the metal ion octahedron layer exposures on the surface of a two layer silicate mineral, but the the oleate acid radical can not attach to a metal ion by replacing a –OH- that connects three metal cations in the same time, So the floatability of such silicate mineral is bad. The metal octahedron chain style of an island silicate mineral affects it floatability, the mineral exposures octahedron chain metals with two dangling bonds in two directions floats better than the mineral exposures octahedron chain metals with two dangling bonds in one direction.

"To enable the prediction of reagents suitable for fine coal flotation, it is necessary to develop a methodology applicable to different South African coal types. Statistical confirmation of the applicability of this methodology is important to avoid recommendation of reagents on a trial and error basis.The study included 5 coal samples from different collieries and included Highveld seam 3 and 4 coal (as one sample), Waterberg coal (zone 10 -11), Highveld seam 5 upper coal and Witbank seam 2 and seam 4 coal. Seam 3 and 4 (mixture) coal, Waterberg and the seam 5 upper coal were all found to be vitrinite rich coals. The coal characterisation study included petrographic analysis, proximate analysis, float-sink analysis, oxygen-containing functional groups, surface extraction, flotation release analysis and contact angle measurements. Flotation tests were used to validate expectations from the characterisation of the coal samples.RESULTSThe flotation data indicated that all of the coal samples were amendable to froth flotation. The best results were obtained with the Witbank seam 2 coal and the poorest flotation with Syferfontein seam 5 coal. The flotation tests showed that the best reagents to float all of the coal samples studied were iso-decanol and dodecene. These reagents produced flotation products that were near to the release curve, which are the optimum flotation results (obtained when using iso-paraffin as collector). Dodecene resulted in low ash products and iso-decanol in high yield products."

"Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is gaining increasing acceptance as a decision-support tool by which to evaluate the environmental performance of a product, process or service. This is evidenced by its inclusion in international policy documents (for example in the European Union’s Integrated Product Policy) and in environmental management standards (the ISO 14 040 series of environmental management codes relate to LCA). In response to this, the minerals industry has conducted a number of commodity-specific LCAs. These include studies for global production of a number of commodities including copper, nickel, aluminium and steel. In addition, a number of minerals companies profess to use LCA as part of their suite of project and technology assessment tools. Often, this collected use represents more a situation of “we do this because we’re told it’s good for business” rather than from any demonstrable evidence of this fact. This has led to a situation of much confusion and disillusionment within the industry, exacerbated by the obvious current limitations of LCA to accurately reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals.Our point of departure here is that LCA, conforming as it does to the tenets of environmental systems analysis, is a valuable starting point, and that there is merit in exploring to what extent the methodology can be enhanced to better reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals. Specifically, we explore here the further development of LCA to address the following:• Land Use issues• Consumption of Abiotic Resources including metallic and non-metallic minerals, water and soil)• Human and Eco-toxicity issues relating to mobility and bio-availability of metals• Salinityand address these through selected experimental and simulation case studies relating to energy- and base minerals production. Advances resulting from the United Nations Environment Programme/Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Life Cycle Initiative are presented in that they directly affect the application of LCA to mining, minerals and metals. Comments are offered on how best the mining and minerals industry might interface with future developments resulting from this Initiative in order that the Initiative can deliver outcomes which render LCA a useful tool for decision making in mining and minerals processing."

"Industrial minerals may contain the same elements in approximately the same amount. In these cases backscatter electron imaging or chemical analysis are not sufficient to identify the minerals. Another problem arises when micro textures are not detectable in traditional imaging or the grain size is smaller than the X-ray spatial resolution.As a supplementary technique in these cases, application of crystallographic information by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) may be a suitable method. The technique has been demonstrated on three Norwegian mineral raw materials and one Italian marble and shows that it has some advantages compared to traditional techniques.• quantitative measurements by ebsdCommon automatic techniques describing the mineral contents and the occurrence of minerals in free and locked particles, are based on optical-, backscattered electron (BSE)- or X-ray-signals. There are various commercial software systems on feature analysis by backscattered and X-ray signals in combination with image analysis (e.g. Oxford Inca Feature, CSIRO QemScan).Especially in silicates, the occurrence of similar elements in the different minerals is common. Sometimes the various minerals not only contain the same elements, but also approximately the same amount of each element. In these cases BSE imaging and chemical analysis are not always sufficient for identification."

"One of the oldest mining areas in the World exist in Africa and the Middle East. This area is being exploited by foreign and local mining entities. Several large plants, both foreign and local as well as small operators, conduct their mining business on a scale which would be could be prohibited in any other part of the world. Relatively recent European disaster with tailing disposal and breakout has highlighted the problem.More important to the author is that the presence of foreign entities in zones which have not remedied the situation but has heightened the concern due to those entities using similar outrageous methods in treatment of waste. The abject misuse of technology cannot be permitted to continue and the lack of any metallurgical knowledge in the treatment of gold ores is considered deplorable for the majority of third world countries.The destruction of cyanide is simple and straightforward and requires no special skills. In South America, we developed a system that is modular, compact and can be operated in batch mode to cater for several clients, as required. Larger installations would require a separate module, as treatmentwould be on a continuous basis."

"A specially designed mill which allowed the control of pH throughout grinding was used to study the effect of rgrinding conditions on galena flotation and galena separation from pyrite. The various reactions occurring on the mineral surface were investigated by a range of techniques, including OH- addition to maintain the grinding pH, EDTA extraction, XPS and ToF-SIMS measurements.Galena flotation and galena separation from pyrite were strongly dependent on the metal oxidation species produced on galena and pyrite surfaces under different grinding conditions. Iron oxidation species depressed both galena and pyrite flotation, whilst lead oxidation species activated pyrite but had little effect on galena. Optimum galena flotation and galena selectivity against pyrite were achieved by selecting grinding conditions that enabled lead and iron oxidation production to be controlled."

The laws of their evolution are stated and the place and role of column flotation are demonstrated.The major parameters of column cell diameter and height are discussed. Options are proposed for optimization of the hydrodynamic characteristics of large-capacity column cells. The high efficiency of columns with cell height of 4-6 m is demonstrated. The optimum parameters of multisectional column machines are determined. Their advantages compared to monocells are shown. A scaling-up procedure for column machines was developed based on flotation macro- and microhydrodynamics simulation."

"The three kinds of phosphate ores (igneous, metasedimentary and sedimentary) found in China have great differences in flotation flowsheets and reagents suite because of their crystal structure and mineral composition. The igneous and metasedimentary apatites have good floatability with fatty acid as collector and waterglass, sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate as conditioners. The sedimentary phosphate is very difficult to beneficiate by direct flotation because of their poor floatabilities and relatively high content of MgO and SiO2, even though the dolomite depressants are used sometimes.The differences in floatability of apatites in China are closely related to their differences in specific surface area. The amount of collector to float apatite increases with the specific surface area. Apatite with lower specific surface area showed good floatability at lower collector concentration. Apatite with a higher specific surface area needed a higher concentration of collector. The content of CO3 2- will affect the specific surface area of apatite by distortion of its crystal structure and consequently affect its floatability.Dolomite can be easily rejected from apatite in a weak acidic medium (pH=5), especially in phosphoric acid medium by reverse flotation. Quartz and siliceous gangue in sedimentary apatite can be removed by direct flotation using fatty acid or by reverse flotation using amine. Amine is not practically applied because sedimentary apatite in China is usually very fine and needs fine grinding, which always results in excessive, very fine, stable and non-flowable foam.Based on the floatability of phosphate ore in China, a two-stage flotation process, direct and reverse flotation (D+R), was developed to beneficiate sedimentary ore. For the Haikou phosphate ore containing 25.11% P2O5, 3.46% MgO and 16.5% SiO2, a concentrate containing 31.84% P2O5, 0.48% MgO and 14.8% SiO2 can be obtained through a continuous D+R test at a recovery of 89%."

"The froth flotation process is not well understood. Both flotation models, and the parameters used to describe the stream flows are not well defined. They in fact vary considerably in different applications. This creates difficulties is designing a simulation program suitable for use by plant personnel, consultants, and researchers. In addition to simulation, an effective simulation program can be expected to provide a range of other services.This paper shows how a process circuit simulator can be designed with sufficient flexibility to satisfy these needs, and discusses some of the additional services.OVERVIEWThe development of a simulation program for froth flotation circuits faces several challenges as flotation models and the associated stream descriptions are not well defined. There is little agreement on the best form for a flotation model, or on how the plant streams should be defined.In addition to simulation, a flotation simulator is generally expected to provide other services such as data input, data reconciliation, model fitting, and accuracy estimation. Additional services may also be needed beyond what might initially be envisaged. A summary of some of these possibilities is included.To apply simulation to a flotation circuit it is necessary to develop a flotation cell model, for instance based on the general outline given in the appendices. Experimental data, usually from the plant, is needed to determine cell model parameters. This is generally done by first undertaking data reconciliation to determine if mass flow constraints are sufficiently closely satisfied. At the same time the data is inspected for outliers that might bias subsequent calculations. Next the data is fitted to a model to back calculate ore characteristics. If there is sufficient agreement between the fitted model and the data, the model can then used to make predictions of the effect of changes to the plant. The changes, that the simulation shows are beneficial, can be applied to improve plant performance"

"Comparison of the two most commonly used classes of depressant in the South African platinum industry is complicated by the fact that these polymers induce different effects on the surfaces onto which they adsorb. The use of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), which is ionically charged in solution, can lead to increased particle dispersion in addition to the effect of reduced surface hydrophobicity (depression). Guar is typically only slightly charged in solution. Comparison of these two depressants is complicated since it is uncertain whether differences in their action is a result of either depression of dispersion effects.This work investigates the role of dispersion independently to that of depression in the batch flotation of a platinum bearing ore. An inorganic dispersant, sodium hexametaphosphate (NaHMP) was added in parallel to the uncharged guar depressant to simulate the action of depressants with varying degrees of dispersion. By distinguishing between the material recovered by entrainment and the floatable gangue and by including the effects of froth stability it was possible to decouple the effects of dispersion and depression.The results show that both dispersion and depression led to increased grade of the sulphide minerals. Depression leads to a decreased recovery of floatable gangue minerals. Dispersion leads to an increased recovery rate of these minerals and an accompanying decrease in froth stability."
