"The froth ability, froth stability and the froth structure are strong influences in flotation process i.e. on water recovery, bubble size, entrainment of gangue particle, flotation rate constants, grade and recovery. The labscale flotation of rich apatite ore with a high mass pull leads to significant changes in pulp and froth properties over time. The froth stability decreases with increasing the flotation time. These changes can be related to different solid contents, reagent concentration, froth heights and bubble size distributions. This study presents the results from froth studies and discussions on the particle size of fully liberated silicates and degree of entrainment based on automated mineralogy size-by-size analysis. The change of entrainment in a rich apatite ore batch flotation with time will describe more precisely by measuring froth properties using a Dynamic Foam Analyzer. It is concluded that the degree of entrainment is not only dependent on particle size but also the pulp density due to its effect on particle settling and also froth properties in varying resistance to particle drainage. Furthermore, entrainment models are applied to predict the effect of size, flotation time on entrainmentINTRODUCTIONFroth flotation belongs to the group of heterocoagulation separation techniques. Froth flotation is classically divided into two active zones, the pulp zone (where particle collection occurs) and the froth zone. A schematics drawing of the interaction between both zones is plotted in Figure 18 (Yianatos and Contreras, 2010). In froth flotation, the collision probability in the collection zone is governed by the physics of the process or hydrodynamics (Wills and Finch, 2016). The true flotation event in the pulp occurs when the hydrophobic valuable mineral particles collide with bubbles and formation of a stable particle-bubble aggregates moving upwards against gravity to the froth phase (Yianatos et al., 2009)."

Soil reconstruction and improvement trials and vegetation experiment is carried out at Shuilong-shan acid rock waste dumps at Dexing Copper Mine in China. pH value, Cu2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, etc. concentration in acid rock drainage (ARD) is also monitored every month since 2005. The results of experiment show that: Lime and topsoil stripped from open-pit is appropriated soil improvement material. Full cover soil improvement method is suitable for flat area, contour soil improvement method and hole soil improvement method is appropriate for slope area. The optimal plant species is ligustrum lucidum Ait,Lespedeza bicolor, Paspalum notatum, Veti-veria zizanioides, Eragrostis pilos and Neyraudia reynaudian. It is the best for Arbor, shrub and grass to be arranged in pairs or groups in order to remold optimal landscape. Pilot sites, covering 3ha, is established. Vegetation coverage reaches 90% in platform area, 40% in slope area. pH value in ARD increased slightly, Cu2+, Pb2+ concentration in ARD decreased, Zn2+ concentration in ARD decreased and varied slightly.

Mechanically-induced chemical reactions between natural beach ilmenite (FeTiO3) and silicon (Si) have been examined by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) analyses. The effect of various milling time on the phase transformation, crystallite size, and lattice strain of a beach sand ilmenite with silicon, and on their leaching behavior in hydrochloric acid (HCl) has been investigated. For mechanically activated FeTiO3, the crystallite size decreased and lattice strain increased monotonically with time of milling. However, the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenite with silicon showed a relatively smaller crystallite size and greater lattice strain compared with the mechanically activated ilmenite under the same milling condition. In accordance with the elapse of milling time, the intensity of both pure FeTiO3 and mechanically activated FeTiO3 gradually decreased. However, in case of the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenitereduction of FeTiO3 by silicon resulted in formation of rutile TiO2 at the milling time of 20 h and afterwards. Additional leaching experiments were carried out at an HCl/ilmenite (wt%) ratio of 20:1. The concentration of HCl was 3 M and the reaction temperature ranged from 70 to 90 oC. Mechanical activation was observed to significantly enhance the dissolution rates of both iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti) in HCl. Particularly, effects of both milling time and silicon addition on the dissolution rates of titanium and iron were significant, while those of temperature were relatively minor under the conditions investigated in this study. This paper reports the results of the study of the influences of concentration and modulus of sodium potassium silicate solution (Na-K activator) and curing mode on the phase composition, mi-crostructure and strength development in the geopolymers prepared using Class F fly ash. X-ray dif-fraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and MAS NMR are utilized in this study. It shows that the compressive strength increases while sodium potassium silicate solution modulus increases, but when modulus exceeds 1.7, the compressive strength decreases, and it decreases markedly while modulus is greater than 2.0. The compressive strength improves with increase of sodium potassium silicate solution concentration. When the concentration is 36%, the compressive strength reaches the maximum. Elevated temperature can increase the strength of samples synthesized using sodium potassium silicate solution with 32% concentration and modulus 1.2. Compared to the strength of the sample cured at 50?, the strength of the samples cured at 65? and 80? are higher at 1 day and 3 days, but when cured at 80?, strength is smaller than that cured at 50? for 7 days. When temperature is too high, too long curing time will decrease the strength. Long precuring at room temperature before application of heat is beneficial for strength development, and there is about 10%~50% increase in strength of the samples cured at 1 day precuring and 2 days elevated temperature as compared to the strengths of the samples cured for 3 days at elevated temperature or cured for 28 days at room temperature. The main product of reaction in the geopolymeric material is amorphous alkali aluminosilicate gel.

Loussavaara-KiirunavaaraAB?s (LKAB) iron ore mine, Kiirunavaara, is of magnetite type and associated with apatite, a calcium phosphate mineral. Rare earth elements (REE) have been found in connection with the apatite but also in other minerals. An apatite concentrate was produced by flotation, in order to investigate the possibilities to extract REE from the apatite by hydrometallurgical means. The content of rare earth elements calculated as oxides (REO) was 0.44% in the concentrate. Initially, leaching was done with large excess of sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid to study the REE solubility with different acids. In sulfuric acid, the leaching recoveries of the different REE varied between 35% and 69%. The reasons for the relative low recoveries, were that the rare earth elements precipitated together with huge amounts of gypsum, that was formed during leaching. However, both hydrochloric- and nitric acid gave almost complete extraction of the REE into solution. Analysis of the small leaching residue obtained, revealed, that mainly the light REE remained in the residue indicating that a small part of the light REE were present in the concentrate, in some acid, insoluble mineral other than apatite. With the aim to separate the REE from the phosphoric acid, the solutions from hydrochloric- and nitric acid leaching were neutralized to a pH of approximately 2 with ammonia. During neutralization, REE were precipitated as phosphates with good recoveries and a concentrate of 10.5% REO suitable for further upgrading was obtained, while the remaining solution can be used for fertilizer production. In further solvent extraction studies, it was shown, that after re-dissolution the REE could be effectively extracted by Cyanex 923, thus allowing for purification from calcium and phosphate ions. Sillimanite, chemically named Aluminum silicate, 3Al2O3SiO2 is one of the three forms of alumino silicate polymorphs and commonly encountered in aluminous metamorphic, plutonic, and volcanic rocks and their weathering products. Most of the sillimanite deposits are granular and are of high grade available in coastal areas as associated mineral along with Titanium bearing minerals namely ilmenite, rutile etc. Sillimanite is one of the widely accepted raw materials for the manufacture of high alumina refractories (55-60 % alumina) or bricks. Sillimanite based refractory bricks are used for the lining of Blast furnaces, Arc furnaces, Soaking pits, Reheating furnaces of iron and steel, rotary kilns for cement manufacturing and general kilns for lime production. Considering the vast potential of unexploited sillimanite reserves in India, M/s Trimex Sands Pvt. Ltd., (TSPL)has set up a Mineral Sand Processing plant in 2010 at Andhra Pradesh with a capacity to produce about 50,000 tons of sillimanite per annum besides the production of various heavy minerals such as ilmenite, rutile, zircon and garnet. Traditionally in India, sillimanite is upgraded by froth flotation technique using Oleic acid as a collector cum frother, sodium silicate as depressant and soda ash as pH regulator. At TSPL, Conventional mechanical float cells are installed to float sillimanite. In addition to the usual problems associated with conventional cells, poor flow ability of the sillimanite concentrate is experienced in dry circuit due to the presence of sodium oleate. Fine garnet in the sillimanite concentrate contributes to high iron content in the final product, making sillimanite separation a nightmare for operators (lower recoveries coupled with inferior grades). Various efforts were made to improve the performance of the circuit such as introduction of additional frother like MIBC, optimizing the operating parameters such as pulp density, collector dosage, depressant dosage, air flow rate, pH etc., use of collector aids, stage wise addition of reagents etc. The challenges faced to produce a sillimanite product with stringent quality norms and the efforts made to improve the grade and recovery are described in this paper. The specific surface area (Blain value) of iron ore concentrate entering the pelletizing plant is one of the characteristics most effective on the overall performance of the plant such as producing harder pellets, decreasing additives consumption, and decreasing energy consumption. Therefore, preparing the feed entering pelletizing plant is required. The iron concentrate entering Ardakan pelletizing plant located in Yazd province, Iran bears relatively low Blain value (approx. 1600 cm2/g) which necessitates one stage of regrinding so as to increase the Blain value to more than 1800 cm2/g. Studies were conducted and results showed that HPGR is the best regrinding equipment for increasing specific surface area. Conducting pilot plant tests on the concentrate sample revealed that specific throughput is 181 to 263 ts/hm3 and specific energy consumption is 1.6kWh to 2.2 kWh. Pilot tests also showed that one stage of grinding results in 407 cm2/g to 553 cm2/g increase in specific surface area. Based on these results, diameter of rolls, length of rolls, power consumption and grinding force were calculated to be 1.3 m, 0.9 m, 1276 kW and 13800 kN, respectively. Therefore, an HPGR with a roll diameter of 1.52 m, roll width of 1.1 m, power of 1660 kWh and a capacity of 500 t/h has been selected and implemented in Ardakan pelletizing plant. Industrial performance of HPGR and its effects on the plant study results show that limestone and bentonite consumption has reduced about 60% and 30%, respectively. Total Fe of the final pellet has increased from 65.5-65.7% to 66.2%. Cold compressive strength (CCS) and porosity of final pellets are approximately 292 kg/pl and 20.4, which are in the acceptable range.

The present paper highlights on the comminution and liberation properties of two greisen-type lithium bearing-mica ore blends (L1, L2) subjected to different breakage devices; cone crusher (CC), roller crusher (RC), rotor beater mill (RBM) and a screen mill (SM). The particle size distribution (PSD) of the products from each device were evaluated to search for an appropriate PSD model using Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann (GGS) and Rosin-Rammler (RR) functions. In order to determine an appropriate function that could better describe the PSDs from the devices used, the coefficient of determination (R2) was used as a criterion. In terms of mineral liberation studies, due to costs, only products from rotor beater mill (RBM) were examined through an automated scanning electron microscope (SEM) technique. It was found that RBM, RC and SM products were better described by the RR model than the GGS model with higher R2 values (0.97-1.0). However, cone crusher products for L1 were better described by GSS model, while that for L2 were better described by RR model. In terms of the spread of size distribution as indicated by RR model parameters, RC products were more uniformly distributed compared to products from other devices, for both ore blends. Also the RBM products were more scattered than products from other devices. The results indicate that the composition of individual ore blends affected the comminution products PSDs since different PSD model parameters were obtained for samples comminuted by same devices. The modal mineralogy of the two ore blends indicate both to be rich in quartz, topaz, zinnwaldite and muscovite. Further, the result indicate that, for both ore blends, zinnwaldite phase is more enriched in the fraction < 250 µm. Moreover, better liberation of zinnwaldite is observed for L1 compared to L2. This could be explained by differences of the two ore blends in three aspects; the nature of mineral association, reduction ratio of the fractions analysed and the nature of spread of the size distribution.

Cyanidation leaching has always been the most widely used method of extraction of gold in the world. Its low cost and high selectivity has made it the prevalent choice for mining companies, and even for the small scale miners. The use of cyanidation in small scale mining has been an issue for the longest time, mainly due to the operation’s lack of safety measures, health care or environmental protection regulations. In pursuit of more environmentally friendly methods of extraction of gold, several alternative extraction processes have been explored, one of which is chlorination. The chlorination process is advantageous when recovering refractory gold locked in sulfides, as it simultaneously oxidizes the surrounding sulfides as well as dissolve any gold exposed to the lixiviant. This research was conducted to study and develop a safer alternative way of extraction of gold from small scale mining operations, without compromising the recovery of gold. In this study, a variation of the chlorination process has been employed for a refractory flotation concentrate wherein the majority of the gold is locked in sulfides. Hypochlorite-bearing reagents were used as the leaching reagents, and the method developed was a 2-stage leaching process in differing pH conditions. The solution pH and Eh was monitored all throughout the runs, and aliquot samples were taken at time intervals for analysis. SEM-EDS imaging was used to determine the mode of oxidation of the chlorination process, and the image obtained showed that the oxidized layer followed the shape of the particle, suggesting a diffusion controlled process. XRD analysis of the sample before and halfway through leaching further confirmed the oxidation of the sulfides. The amount of gold dissolved in the aqueous solution and in the solid residue were used as the basis for the determination of the recovery of gold. An average gold recovery of up to 84.38% was obtained using the developed method in just 7 hours of leaching. This method was then employed for a pilot-plant scale test and a gold recovery of 79.2% was obtained.

According to XRD, DTA and SEM detections, the hydration products of blast furnace slag (BFS) based cementing material SL, SLG. were studied in different age periods. The XRD analysis of cementing material SL hydration products showed that the composition of hydration products were mainly amorphous substances, few crystalline substances. Characteristic peak of ettringite hadn?t been found in the spectral line of DTA, and it hadn?t been found in the figures of SEM, either, which was accordant with the conclusion that the cementing performance of SL mainly coming from gel of hydrated calcium silicate (CSH) and hydrated calcium aluminate. However, the main hydration products of SLG are Aft, CSH, and AFm, which are similar to Portland cement. All results suggest that BFS is a suitable base material for cementation. For its surface features, micro-sized hematite is usually difficult to recover by magnetic separation; especially, the existing high gradient magnetic separator in industry can not utilize collecting matrix with thin silky rods for its property of being easily blocked; the lower size limit for recovery of micro-sized weak magnetic minerals is about 0.019mm, some even is 0.037mm. This paper introduces the application of the combined new technique of water-air joint discharging of concentrate and collecting matrix with different diameter silky rods in the field of recovery of micro-sized hematite by high gradient magnetic separator. The commercial test result for recovery of a certain hematite with size about ?0.037mm shows that the recovery can be promoted by 16.81% with basically same concentrate grade.

PET/kaolin nanocomposites were prepared with melt blending and the structure of the composites was characterized through IR techniques. The results showed that there is stable chemical bonding between PET and kaolin. In addition, the dispersion condition of nanokaolin was observed by means of SEM and TEM. As a result, the thickness of the dispersed nanokaolin particles in PET matrix is mainly from 20mm to 200nm, and the nanosized particles congregate to some extent in the samples. In addition, it was found the kaolin particles almost homogeneously dispersed in the PET matrix, without preferential orientation because of the shear effect due to melt blending. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of PET/kaolin nanocomposites are dependent on the modification efficiency of nanokaolin. With the poor efficiency, the nanokaolin particles tend to aggregate at a high content and have a bad interfacial compability between nanokaolin and PET matrix, which lead to stress concentration, so the mechanical property descends. Experiments of different contents of modified nanokalin indicated that the intensity of PET/kaolin nanocomposites decreased firstly, then increased, and then decreased, with the nanokaolin content of 4 to 5 percent, the rupture stress of the composites showed a maximum value, which was higher than that of pure PET. On one hand, nanokaolin decreases the function among PET macromolecules, which will decline the mechanical properties, on the other hand, the piece structure of kaolinite improves the intensity of the nanocomposite. When the nanokaolin content is low, the former has the dominant effect on mechanical property, while the latter will play a leading role with the content increasing. But if the nanokaolin content still increases, the agglomeration and stress concentration will be obvious.

A preliminary attempt has been made to study the particle size distribution (PSD) of minerals in one of the industrially important pulverized Indian coal sample using computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM). The results show that clay minerals, quartz, pyrite, and pyrrhotite form the bulk of the mineral matter. Minor minerals, such as calcite, dolomite, ankerite, barite, oxidized pyrrhotite, and gypsum are also observed in the coal sample. The PSD of the included minerals is generally observed to be finer than that of the excluded ones in the coal. Thus, the coal rich in included minerals has more small mineral particles, which may affect its reactivity. The proportion of included to excluded is found to be higher in major cases. Si is found to be mostly occurred as quartz and clay minerals, while Al mostly occurs as silicate minerals. Fe is primarily present as iron sulfides, iron oxide, and Fe-Al-silicate. S is partitioned into iron sulfides and gypsum. Most Ca occurs as carbonates and gypsum, with a minor fraction associated with clay minerals. Mg is found to be mainly present as dolomite and clay minerals, with a very minor fraction present as ankerite. The majority of alkali elements are associated with aluminosilicates. P is mostly associated with kaolinite and/or present as more complex compounds containing Al, Si, and other elements as apatite are found to be absent in the coal studied. The cohesive zone, where the ore fed into the blast furnace softens and melts, is critical to the blast furnace performance and stability due to its influence on the gas and solid flow. This paper de-scribes a project for the development of a process model to predict the cohesive zone properties and the results of its first step; the solid flow model. The process model is expected to describe a realistic solid burden flow and the formation of the cohesive zone, its shape, location, structure, permeability, and in particular the mineralogical changes within the cohesive zone. This will be achieved using various simulation and computing tools: a combination of the Discrete Element Method (DEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the DEM?CFD hybrid approach, together with models for the thermodynamics and reaction kinetics. The key benefits of the hybrid approach lie in the coupling of the continuous phase and the discrete particles, and the possibility of introducing thermodynamics and reaction kinetics into the system in a more realistic manner. Two DEM simulations are presented for a small scale blast furnace to investigate the influence of non-spherical particles on the solid flow. This influence can be observed from a more even solid flow pattern and a reduced deadman size. The results indicate the requirement to include non- spherical particles in a blast furnace simulation to achieve a realistic solid flow.

Improving reaction effectiveness of asbestos tailings and acid is main means to increase the productivity of magnesium hydroxide and amorphous silica and to reduce production costs. In this paper, the process optimization of acid-leaching reaction process of asbestos tailings is reported. Through the orthogonal experiments of four influence factors, such as acid consumption, reaction temperature, reaction time and initial acid concentration in the leaching reaction. The experiment results indicated that the optimal process parameters were as follows: reaction temperature was 95?, reaction time was 1.5h, acid consumption was 218.9g hydrochloric acid(37%) per 100g asbestos tailings and initial acid concentration was about 25%. The influence significance sequence of the four factors was as follows: reaction temperature > reaction time > mass concentration of hydrochloric acid > hydrochloric acid consumption. Under the optimum process conditions, the leaching rate of MgO was 97.3%, total iron 98.15% and Al2O3 57.9%.

Most of the coal reserves in India are of drift origin and have very poor washability characteristics and a high level of near gravity materials. At least 30 new coal wash plants are expected to be set up in the next 5years.In such a scenario, adequate sampling followed by sink float test work for washability analysis becomes very critical for designing these new plants. For coal sampling purpose, stipulations of different standards are sometimes formidable and on the border of ?impracticality?; sometimes are self contradictory in terms of gross sample weight vis-a-vis minimum number of particles required in each size fraction and in each relative density fraction and also the minimum mass in the latter. Validation of the generated data is another important aspect of washability analysis. These issues can easily be addressed by using straight forward mathematical relationships, well known RR plots and by using simple MS Excel tool, etc.

In this paper, the effect of different operating parameters of high speed stirred mill on the particle breakage mode is addressed. Morphological features of broken particles is investigated and related to the types of forces generated in the mill using Discrete Element Method (DEM). The stress intensities generated in the mill are varied by changing the agitator speed. The investigated agitator speeds were 1000, 1500, and 2000 revolution per minute (rpm). The minerals considered in this study are hard minerals (quartz) and soft, sulphide minerals (galena). The morphological features examined are roughness, roundness and elongation, which shed light on the mode of breakage during the grinding process. Particles that are rough, less round and elongated would imply that they broke via fracture, along their grain boundaries. On the other hand, the smooth, less elongated particles would mean breakage occurred across the grain, which is abrasion mod. DEM study complemented the understanding of particle breakage mechanism via tracking the types of forces applied on the particles. Normal forces imply compressive loading, which is presumed to impose fracture breakage along the grain boundaries, whereas tangential forces imply abrasion loading. Stirred mill grinding has been regarded as an attrition/abrasion process, whereas, this study showed that about 60% of total particles that are morphologically analyzed for both minerals were rough particles. Such an observation indicates that the fine product, which contain a significant amount of progeny from the coarse fractions are consistently broken via fracture. The morphology results agreed with the DEM findings, which indicated that the agitator speed, mineral type, and residence time would dictate the type and mode of particle breakage. "Sand and gravel are the second and third largest minerals in production in Brazil, and this is increasing noticeably. The extraction of natural sand from river beds is increasingly restricted and most of the sand used in large cities comes in from more than 150 km away, resulting in high transportation costs. As a result, it has become more common to use crushed rock as artificial sand. The main difficulties in this process are controlling the shape of the particles and the content of deleterious materials, such as mica. Within this situation, this paper presents an alternative to using artificial sand for concrete use. Our procedure involves the following steps: a) sampling sand from different production days, b) characterizing the bulk sample by particle size and shape distribution, chemical composition by X ray fluorescence and mineralogical composition by X ray diffraction, c) removing fine grains by air classifier, d) performing intensive attrition with high pressure washing and e) characterizing products. The results demonstrated that this sample contains a huge proportion of fine grains and a notable content of mica, which is distributed along all sieve fractions. The presence of mica makes the use of sand in concrete unfeasible, moreover scanning electron microscopy analysis demonstrated that this phylossilicate is finely grained and associated with coarse fractions. Thus, the removal of fine fractions made possible a partial reduction in mica content.
