Low-grade ore bodies, increase in rock competency, finely disseminated valuable minerals in the ore bodies, ore variability and water scarcity are among the technical challenges faced by the mining industry. These challenges have increased the business risk, capital investment and operating cost of the mining projects. Since the last 20 years, many large-scale concentrators have been built to cope with the above-mentioned challenges. Comminution, especially the fine grinding is an energy-intensive process. For example, the ball mill has a limitation in the fine grinding regime where the energy consumption increases exponentially when the product size is below 45 µm. The industry has been seeking for solutions that have a minimum risk and total cost of ownership. The stirred milling technology such as the TowerMill is well accepted by the industry as it has demonstrated the attributes required for fine grinding. TowerMill is a matured technology that has been adopted since the 80s for regrinding duty. Recently, this technology was installed in secondary and tertiary grinding duty to prepare a finer feed to rougher flotation. Four units of TowerMills were installed in a magnetite concentrator in Western Australia in tertiary grinding duty. Recently, Nippon Eirich has conducted process performance evaluation on the TowerMill circuit. The outcome of the exercise had indicated that the circuit is consuming 3.4 kWh/t to reduce from 55 µm to 35 µm with a narrow product size distribution. The effect of operating variables such as the specific energy, grinding media size, mill content % solids and mill feed configuration on the grinding efficiency were evaluated at the plant scale. Furthermore, the scale-up methodology was validated. The scope of this paper includes the performances of TowerMill and the validation of scale-up methodology.

Water-sealed cyclone is a new efficient equipment to use for grading,concentrating of slurry, it was researched and developed by the Kunming Metallurgy Research Institute in the 1980s , and ac-cessed to the 1990 national invention award and the national patent products (ZL02245313.X ). The equipment and technology are innovative, firstly, we design a set of micro-pressure (0.005~0.008MPa) water-sealed device, which eliminates the gas phase of three-phase of sol-id-liquid-gas of the traditional general hydrocyclone grading process, it only has solid and liquid phases. Secondly, the axial velocity envelope surface which is a factor of controlling the accuracy of grading changes to a wedge rotation; and the interface of upward flow to down flow changes from surface to the solid, it can improve grading accuracy. Thirdly, water-sealed box and catheter devices make the stilling which pass through the cyclone cone centrifugal force fields re-enter the pressure grading zone of catheter. The three innovations make water-sealed cyclone can reduce the loss of overflow and has less mud in stilling product. Because the excellent performance, the water-sealed cyclone has application in non-ferrous metals, ferrous metals, non-metallic and aluminum hydroxide industries for grading, desliming and concentrating since it has successfully developed.

This is a tutorial paper on industrially successful approaches for nonlinear process monitoring. Online process monitoring is essential to continuous operation of plants at high efficiency. The problem of process monitoring is one where an impending but undesirable process condition has to be identified and used to alert process engineers. This problem has traditionally been solved by practicing engineers using statistical techniques that detect a change in the underlying correlation structure of process variables. For linear correlation structures, algorithms such as principal components analysis, independent component analysis and partial least squares have been proposed. However, many industrial processes exhibit nonlinear correlation structure between the process variables. In this tutorial we describe various nonlinear monitoring techniques and elaborate on two recently developed methods, namely Support Vector Machine and Local Linear Embedding. The two methods are evaluated by application on two experimental case studies, a SAG mill and a polymer extruder.

The sedimentary phosphate deposit of Bayovar is located in a very dry area of Peru (desert of Sechura) which is close to the Pacific coast. It consists of seven superposed layers (beds) which call for different strategy of concentration. The ore is composed predominantly by apatite (84% in weight basis) plus silicates (16%). In order to treat the ore from beds 1-5, a suitable standard mineral processing circuit (composed of scrubbing, screening, attrition and desliming) started its operation in 2010, yielding 3.9 Mt/y of concentrate assaying 30% of P2O5. To concentrate phosphate from beds 6-7, however, it is necessary to carry out further cationic reverse flotation of silicates, at neutral pH, to yield a concentrate, which meets market specification. The new process was developed in laboratory scale by a collaborative program conducted between Vale S.A. and the University of Sao Paulo-Brazil. A pilot plant has currently been running in order to confirm the very good results yielded in laboratory scale. The successful accomplishment of flotation in the current beneficiation flow sheet will enable a capacity expansion of 1.9 Mt/y of concentrate assaying 30% of P2O5. As water resources are very limited at Bayovar region, all the steps of concentration, including flotation, must be performed with seawater, which must be continuously recycled. This work addresses some relevant topics related to the use of seawater in the reverse cationic flotation of silicates: influence of temperature, water quality (ageing and chemical composition) and collector type (ether amine versus condensate). The results indicate that condensate amine works better than ether amine. If flotation is conducted with the former collector, the separation process is able to tolerate changes in temperature (25-40oC) and water quality caused by either evaporation or ageing. "With the trend of increasingly more mineral resources turning low-grade and refractory, more and more new ore bodies being developed worldwide are more finely grained, which drives the rapidly development and application of techniques related to tower mills (vertical spiral stirred mills). However, the lacking in fundamentals of fine grinding, as well as standard procedures for equipment selection and scale up, seriously restraint high efficient application of tower mills. Taking grinding media motion characteristic and grinding intensity as a breakthrough point, this paper studies mechanisms behind how critical parameters affect grinding efficiency of tower mill, including ratio of screw pitch and diameter, agitator rotation speed, grinding media size. Several sets of orthogonal test are conducted on the quartz ore using the grinding system of KLM-3 tower mill. All the tests are under the same character of feeding mineral and undergo the consistent sampling for at least 60min grinding time. The input power is measured by a torque measurement system and the grinding products are analyzed by the laser particle size analyzer. The test results show the influence of parameters on grinding efficiency. Among the three important parameters, the effect of grinding media diameter is the biggest, followed by the agitator tip speed, and finally the ratio of screw pitch and diameter. For the different particle size of grinding products, the best combination of grinding parameters is different, with the mineral size becoming finer, the ratio of screw pitch and diameter become smaller, the diameter of grinding media become smaller, while the agitator tip speed does not change too much. The conclusions of the study help us to improve the grinding efficiency of the tower mill, to assist in the selection and optimization of working parameters, establish new scale up method on the basis of grinding model and eventually provide theoretical basis of rational selections of structural and media physical parameters within tower mill."

The interaction and galena flotation with xanthenes and dexanthogen regularities have been de-fined. So, using thermodynamic method of analysis, the thermodynamic stability of [galena - xanthenes - water] system and the behavior of lead xanthenes surface state in solution were devised. Thus, results of cared out calculations and experimental investigation completely coincide with-out depending on witch product of sulfur oxidation is formed in the solution. In additional, was obtained quantitative physico-chemical models for the necessary xanthenes concentration of lead sul-fide complete flotation in the tuning fork of: at ?? values from 7.0 up to 9.0 (or at the formation of lead carbonate PbCO3 ) and at ?? values from 9.0 up to 12 (or at the formation of lead hydro carbonate Pb3(OH)2(CO3)2 Physico-chemical models derived can be used as the criteria for functional units of automation systems to control and regulate the flotation process in mineral processing plants.

Single particle impact breakage experiments provide essential data to aid in understanding of rock fracture in comminution. Such experiments, conducted using devices such as the drop weight tester, split Hopkinson bars and more recently the rotary breakage tester, have been successfully used to characterize ore breakage properties in relation to measured fracture energies. The work presented in this paper highlights the techniques behind the calculation of impact breakage properties from each of these three devices. The breakage parameters that can be calculated from experimental data from each of these are to be described. Drop weight tests are used to calculate A and b hardness parameters using the standard JK breakage model. Split Hopkinson pressure bars are used to establish the ultimate compressive stress of particles through single impact breakage tests and the fraction of impact energy utilized to cause particle fracture. Low energy breakage tests using the rotary breakage tester are shown to be used in calculating particle breakage probability. Methods to calculate parameters related to particle breakage probabilities such as E0 and Ecrit are also discussed.

In September 2005, after 30 years experiencing in operating an ESF using a falling water film shell cooling system, Antam entered the new era in operating an ESF, after completely modernized its ESF No. 2 from a falling water film shell cooling system to a copper cooling system. Further, in the beginning of 2007, Ferronickel plant No. 3, where its ESF also uses copper coolers, was successfully commissioned. By operating an ESF using a copper cooling technology, Antam has to face some challenges to establish the operation stability. Besides that, the chances to maximize the furnace efficiency are greatly opened. The shielded-arc mode of electrode tip is selected to operate an ESF under relatively high furnace power to produce metal having tap temperature below 1500? and slag having tap temperature below 1600?. It leads to electric current unbalance. Further, operating an ESF using a copper cooler system under high voltage as consequence of the furnace power raise increases metal and slag tap temperature. This condition damages furnace integrity fast. Besides that, relatively high metal temperature increases its pressure during metal tapping. It leads to failure in closing the metal tap hole. The main different ways in operating an ESF using a falling water film shell cooling system and a copper cooling system lie in the electrode tip mode, the water specification used for cooler, metal tap block maintenance and allowed metal & slag level in furnace. Since a copper cooler system allows an ESF to be operated by consuming nickel ore having ratio Fe / Ni up to eight and producing slag having relatively high Fe content in slag, an undesirable silicon reversion phenomenon becomes an obstacle in reaching the operation stability. A copper cooler technology lets Antam to take a chance to increase its capacity. Modernizing the ESF No.2 had increased its furnace power from 17 MWh to 25 MWh. Meanwhile the ESF No. 3 can be operated up to 42 MWh. This technology allows an ESF to be operated under relatively high furnace power above 25 MWh safely as well as prolong the campaign life of ESF brick. Further, lowering ESF power consumption, extending the limitation of ratio S/M in nickel ore consumed and adjusting Ni grade in ferronickel product can be gained by applying this technology.

In this paper the possibility to complete the copper recovery and to enrich in PVC a mixture of plastic granules obtained by grinding electrical cables are investigated. The recovery of a large part of the copper still present among the plastic granules was possible by means of a mechanical screening, the finer polymeric fraction was collected, at the same time. In order to complete the copper polymer separation the following techniques were employed. Counter current separation in water, static dense medium separation with zinc chloride solution and copper extraction with nitric acid and subsequent electrolytic deposition. A Tri-Flo® dynamic dense medium separator was employed in order to separate the lighter polymeric fraction, from the heavier polymeric fraction, mainly PVC. Water or a salt-water solution was employed to feed the separator device.

Over the years, Coal Beneficiation at Tata Steel - West Bokaro has seen varied changes. With increasing R.O.M throughputs & lowering of the concentrate ash, Fine Coal Beneficiation process has thrown up myriad challenges. Development of Synthetic Collector was initiated couple of years back with Technical assistance from NLC Nalco India Ltd. Coal from West Bokaro unit was sent to Nalco?s Naperville (US) research lab for developing Tailor made synthetic collector . After comprehensive lab flotation studies, synthetic collector was developed & recommended for plant evaluation. The lab scale results were very promising in terms of improved separation efficiency & yield at similar ash level. The collector sample received from Nalco research laboratory were revalidated at Nalco Kolkata lab and finally at Tata Steel West Bokaro lab, confirming the promising results. (S.E 25-30 % better than HS Diesel) The key factors playing out for this improvement initiative are a) Scope for improvement in Clean Coal Yield at same or lower ash level coupled with improved Selectivity and Separation Efficiency b) Introduction of a Synthetic Collector with a Green Chemistry and subsequent replacement of H S Diesel, which is highly inflammable with a less inflammable & safer product Trial was conducted at plant scale in two phases and comparative performance of the Collector vis-à-vis Diesel was evaluated across the following Coal Seams of Q- SE (Seam VII, VIII, VI, IX and X). The results generated are very promising and the improvements observed are summarized below. ? Separation efficiency improvement by more than 20% observed. ? Flotation Fines yield increase varied from 0.6- 1.5 % on raw coal basis across different seams. ? Consumption pattern is 20-25 % lower than Diesel. The processing of sulphide ores with variable and complex mineral composition and physical properties, such as those processed by two-stage selective flotation scheme in “Erma reka” concentrator, Minstroy Holding JSC, requires excellent selectivity in order to achieve acceptable concentrate grades. The lead-zinc ores from the hydrothermal lead-zinc deposits mainly contain galena (PbS), sphalerite (ZnS), pyrite (FeS) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), as well as non-metal minerals such as quartz, carbonates and clinopyroxenes skarns. One of the main impurities present in sphalerite is iron, which is known to be detrimental to the rate of sphalerite flotation and its recovery. The results from the conducted laboratory and industrial tests, presented in the previous study, showed that it is possible to depress the iron rich sphalerite by adding MINFIT® (modified sulfur-oxy depressant) at the pH of approximately 9.5 in rougher lead flotation circuit, leading to reduction of zinc sulphate consumption and complete elimination of cyanides from the flotation process. Furthermore, the consumption of copper sulphate, which reactivates the surface of the zinc minerals, was significantly reduced. Consequently, the optimisation of the reagent regime in the Erma reka concentrator, led to notably improved qualitative (grade, recovery) properties of the final lead and zinc concentrates. Moreover, when comparing the reagents consumption for 2014 and 2016 – when the processing plant have been applying the new optimized reagents regime, comprises the use of MINFIT as the primary depressant, the following results have been achieved: ZnSO4 decreased by 30%; CuSO4 consumption decreased four times and full rejection of cyanides from the process. Finally, this paper provides a state-of-the-art review of the obtained results during the period of application of the new flotation reagents regime in the Erma reka concentrator, Minstroy Holding JSC.

A low grade Pt-Pd ores, with 1g/t Pt and 0.13g/t Pd, and 8.70% Fe and 2.50% P2O5 is experimented to recover of Pt and Pd. The flowsheet is proposed which consists of Pt-Pd selective flotation, apatite flotation from tailings of Pt-Pd flotation, magnetic separation of magnetite from apatite flotation tailing. With butyl xanthate, N-ally group-O-isobuturyl-thioanimoformate and Sodium y-89 xanthate as collectors, sodium silicate as depressant, and sodium carbonate as pH regulator, a concentrate, assaying 324.52 g/t Pt and 45.62 g/t Pd, is obtained with recoveries of 87.23% Pt and 76.89% Pd from surface ore. A concentrate, assaying 1693.53 g/t Pt and 64.12 g/t Pd, is obtained with recoveries of 88.54% Pt and 83.78% Pd from primary ore. At same time, A iron concentrate assaying 64.12% Fe with a recovery of 24.94%, and a apatite concentrate assying 30.32% P2O5 with a recovery of 80.12% are obtained.

Effect of applied DC potentials on the bioleaching of a chalcopyrite concentrate in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is discussed. Copper dissolution was the highest at an applied potential of +600mV (SCE), while all the dissolved copper got cathodically deposited at a negative potential of -600mV (SCE). Electrobioleaching at an applied potential of +600mV (SCE) was established at different pulp densities as a function of time. Effect of the magnitude of electrolytic currents on the activity and growth of bacterial cells was studied. Preadaptation of bacterial cells to the concentrate slurry and electrolytic growth conditions significantly enhanced copper dissolution. Electrochemical and biochemical mechanisms involved in electrobioleaching are illustrated with respect to oxidative dissolution and bio catalysis of anodic oxidation.

Utilisation of Low-Grade Iron Ore Fines after concentration not only helps in conservation of the mineral wealth, but also substantialsly improves the economics of iron ore mining. There has been need to develop suitable beneficiation process for upgradation of low-grade iron ores towards their rational utilisation. Presently the circuit adopted for processing iron ores has limitations in reduction of alumina. The depletion of high-grade reserves, utilisation of low-grade reserves coupled with in-creasing market pressure for improved product quality necessitates re-examination of the process flow sheets and evaluate alternative or supplemental processing routes. The main objective of the Process amenability studies for utilisation of Low-Grade Iron Ore Fines (-10mm) is to get Pellet grade concentrate with +65% Fe (min), SiO2 1.8% (max), Al2O3 1.8% (max) and other proportionate constituents by adopting suitable beneficiation techniques and to collect the relevant data (Quality and Quantity of the Products) for the process development. In an effort to formulate a conceptual process flow sheet, the Process amenability studies for utilisation of Low-Grade Iron Ore Fines (-10mm), which is lying at a mine site in India, samples were collected and taken up for the study. The efforts of R & D of NMDC are discussed in this paper. Low-Grade Iron Ore Fines (-10mm) sample assayed 60.10% Fe with 3.48% SiO2 Aland 4.48% 2O3from 40 microns to 300 microns. The sample consists of hematite as the chief ore mineral followed by minor amounts of maghemite. The gangue minerals include quartz and ferruginous clay in which quartz occurs as medium grained where as ferruginous clay occurs as fine to sub microscopic size mineral. The economical processing route evolved out of the studies finally could yield a final concentrate constituting 58.63% by weight along with Iron unit?s recovery of 63.51% assaying 65.10% Fe with 1.48% SiO2 and 1.85% Al2O3route that adopted comprises the following operations. Making slurry in a sump pump followed by grinding in close circuit with 48mesh size Screen. The -48 mesh size product was subjected o the Cycloning to remove slimes. The Cyclone Underflow product was subjected to Floatex Density Separation (FDS) to separate fine heavy minerals from the gangue minerals. The FDS Underflow was collected as concentrate. The FDS Overflow product was further subjected with Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) to recover more Iron units as magnetics. A conceptual process flow sheet was evolved, which may become the prelude to the subsequent finalisation of the process flow sheet for commercialisation.

This paper presents BF flotation machines in brief which are manufactured by Beijing General Research Institute of Mining & Metallurgy (BGRIMM). Dimensional analysis and similarity criteria have been used to scale up BF flotation machines. These scale-up criteria can be used to determine mechanical structure and hydrodynamic parameters including mixing, solids suspension, air transfer and power and so on. Similarity criteria are used to design 40m3 flotation machine being based on data from 1.2 m3 to 20 m3 flotation machines. Hydrodynamic tests of 40 m3 flotation machine in water are discussed.

The process of bioleaching marmatite using moderately thermophilic bacteria has been studied in this research by comparing marmatite leaching performance of mesophilic bacteria and moderately thermophilic bacteria and valuating the effect of venting capacity on marmatite leaching performance of moderately thermophilic bacteria and the effect of pulp densities on marmatite leaching performance of moderately thermophilic bacteria. The results show that moderately thermophilic bacteria have more advantages over mesophilic bacteria in bioleaching marmatite. Aeration agitation can improve the transfer of O2 and CO2 in solution and promote the growth of bacteria and therefore, enhance the leaching efficiency. With the increase of pulp density, the total leaching amount of valuable metals increased, however, the extraction efficiency decreased due to many rea-sons, like increasing shear force that results in poorly growth condition for bacteria, etc.

The paper presents the results of the research on the development of gravity concentrates processing technology (gold grade is from 50 g/t to 1 kg/t and over) using intensive cyanidation with gold recovery to pregnant solutions followed by precipitation of metals from them using various methods. Test work and pilot plant results confirm that a new developed hydrodynamic regime provides an efficient treatment of gravity concentrates of polydisperse composition without their grinding and preliminary desliming. The resulting pregnant and washing solutions are amenable to metals recovery using electrowinning, cementation onto zinc dust and CIS. Cone plants with a lower ball valve for cyanidation of unground gravity concentrates developed by IRGIREDMET JSC have been successfully tested at a number of Russian operations. Currently, a modular plant equipped with gold electric precipitation from pregnant solution unit is successfully operated at a Russian gold processing plant. Cyanidation of the resulting high-grade gravity concentrate is carried out at the concentration of 8-10 g/L NaCN and 10 g/L NaOH. Gold recovery to the solution is 97-98%. Electrowinning is carried out in flow cell GNC-40M. In this case, the residual gold concentration yield is 0.3-0.5 mg/L. Also, a modular plant for relatively low-grade middlings (50-100 g/t Au) of gravity concentration has been introduced. The concentration of NaCN and NaOH is 2-3 g/L and 1.5-2 g/L, respectively, during leaching. This plant is equipped with a unit for gold cementation from pregnant solution with zinc dust. This cementation unit is of original design. It is made in the form of a filtering device and is composed of several layers of carbon fiber which contacts with zinc powder. The residual gold concentration yield from a cementation unit is less than 0.1 mg/L. Gold recovery is 93-97%. In 2017-2018, the introduction of intensive cyanidation modular plants to gravity concentrates will be planned at new projects of Russia and the CIS.

"Cyanide tailings of gold and silver concentrates contain considerable quantities of copper-lead-zinc sulfide minerals that can be recovered. However, the strong inhibition effect of cyanide often makes it difficult to recover these sulfide minerals effectively. In this research, a sample of cyanide tailings was investigated based on the principles of process mineralogy; activating flotation tests were carried out for the target minerals in the tailings, and the activation mechanism of the activator and its influence on the target minerals were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Mixed flotation of copper and zinc was carried out using QJ-01, a combined agent containing sulfite, as the activator of copper and zinc minerals, and ammonium dibutyl dithiophosphate (ADD) and butyl xanthate (BX) as the combined collector. Copper concentrate was obtained from the mixed concentrate by using a combined inhibitor of sodium sulfide and zinc sulfate to inhibit the zinc mineral. Zinc concentrate was extracted from the copper tailings by using copper sulfate as the activator and BX as the collector. The flotation test yielded copper concentrate with a grade of 22.56% and recovery of 76.96%, and zinc concentrate with a grade of 42.56% and recovery of 82.29%, which shows that comprehensive recovery of the sulfide minerals – copper and zinc –from the cyanide tailings was realized. The FTIR analysis showed that CN- was chemisorbed on the surface of chalcopyrite and sphalerite following cyanide treatment, while the combined activator QJ-01 containing sulfite reduced CN- into SCN- and weakened the complexing ability of CN- with metal ions on the mineral surface, thus achieving a good activation effect on chalcopyrite and sphalerite. The results of this study can provide practical guidance in increasing the resource utilization ratio of cyanide tailings in gold mines, and thus contribute to alleviating environmental problems caused by stockpiling cyanide tailings. INTRODUCTION Cyanidation, the most widely used technology for extraction of gold, has several advantages such as high recovery, process maturity, low cost, etc. According to available data, the annual discharge of cyanide tailings from China's gold mines exceeds 20 million tons (Li et al., 2011). Lower grades of exploitable gold ore entail increased discharge of cyanide tailings. Huge quantities of cyanide tailings are regarded as waste and stored, resulting in significant wastage of land resources. Moreover, residual beneficiation reagents, cyanide ions, and heavy metal ions in cyanide tailings cause severe pollution of water and land (Laitos et al., 2013; Donato et al., 2007; Mudder and Botz, 2004). In addition, cyanide tailings often contain valuable elements such as gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, sulfur, and iron, which, if not recycled, would result in considerable wastage of resources. Hence, it is imperative to study the reduction and safety of cyanide tailings, and the mineral resources present in them."

Conventionally, beneficiation in Indian coal washeries is done using dense medium cyclones upto the size of 0.5 mm. Coal fines below 0.5 mm size are extensively cleaned by froth flotation. There are many problems associated with flotation of Indian coals, e.g. poor response of coal particles to flotation, misplacement of fine high-ash material to froth, loss of good quality coarser coals (within ?0.5 mm size range) to tailing streams, high cost of reagents, water contamination, etc. In addition, sophisticated control systems for efficient management of the fines washing circuits are needed. Thus, there is an escalation in the capital and processing costs. In view of these facts, studies were carried out to establish the cleaning potential of dense medium cyclones for beneficiation of fine coal down to a size of 0.1 mm, essentially aimed at reducing the load on fine coal circuits mainly comprising of flotation. ROM Coal (in the size range of -2 + 0.1 mm) obtained from JogtaOCM,Jharia coalfield possessing relatively low ash (about 21%) was used in this study. Purpose for using low ash coal was to further lower, its ash content down to 8% which is comparable, to the ash content of imported coal. After characterization studies, nine tests were carried out on the prepared feed sample for its beneficiation using a dense medium cyclone of non-conventional design (very low cone angle and longer barrel), by varying its apex and vortex finder diameters. The efficiency of separation has been evaluated using Tromp curves. It could be established that it is possible to produce a clean coal of 8% ash, with Ep value of 0.044, using Jogta OCM coal by treating it in a modified dense medium cyclone.
